Do-it-yourself wooden gate and gate: photo and assembly. Do-it-yourself sliding gates (57 photos) - types, features, installation instructions Swing gate options for a private house

Any owner of a private house, whether it is a country house or a building for permanent residence, upon completion of construction, is faced with the task of installing a gate. In fact, the gates offered on the modern construction market, the photos of which can be seen in the article, are able to satisfy any practical and aesthetic needs.

The choice of design is a responsible task, since its purpose is not only to protect the site from intruders. Properly selected gates for a private house, a photo version of which can be seen below, are an adornment of the entire architectural ensemble and its face. After all, they create the first impression of the owner. Therefore, when resolving the issue, one should proceed, on the one hand, from the point of view of the practicality of the material used, and on the other hand, from design considerations. It is important that the design does not violate the overall harmony. Even beautiful gates and wickets themselves can look ridiculous if they are stylistically inadequate for the house, other buildings and the fence.

When deciding on the installation of the gate, first of all, it is necessary to decide on the material.

materials

Wood

Wooden gates for a private house, the photos of which you will see below, are a very popular solution. The reason for this is a number of advantages that a tree has. These include:

  1. Environmental safety of the material.
  2. The ease of installation of the structure and the ability to perform such work on your own, without the help of professionals.
  3. Relative ease of construction.
  4. The ability to do without expensive and complex equipment during installation.

The main disadvantage of natural wood structures is their flammability. Therefore, they are unsafe in terms of fire. In addition, such structures require regular procedures to ensure their safety, including:

  1. Painting and repair.
  2. Treatment with antiseptic compounds to prevent rotting and fungal infection.

The disadvantage is the difference in weight that occurs when changing from dry to rainy weather due to the ability of wood to absorb moisture. The result may be their deformation.

Decking

Gate options for a private house include structures made of corrugated board. This material is profiled galvanized steel sheets. Fences and gates for a private house, made of corrugated board, are a widespread design. The reason for this is the numerous advantages that this material has. These include:

  • the ability to choose any color to your taste;
  • relatively low cost;
  • ease of installation;
  • small mass;
  • durability;
  • no need for constant care;
  • numerous design options.

The main disadvantage of structures made of this material is their lack of sophistication in terms of aesthetic natures. However, having shown imagination, you can choose an interesting color, as well as decorate the gate in an original way around the perimeter. As a result, the gate for the house, the photo of which you will see below, will look very attractive.

Euro picket fence

It is a variation of the previous material and is a metal profiled strip with a polymer coating. Metal fence structures have an aesthetic and modern look.

forged metal

Forging allows you to create exceptionally beautiful gates, photo options for such gates are presented below - and each of them can be safely called a work of art. The disadvantage of this solution is its high cost. Only fairly wealthy owners of private houses can afford the installation of a forged structure. At the same time, forged gates and gates, photos of which you will see below, have the following number of advantages:

  • durability;
  • high level of strength and wear resistance;
  • aesthetic appeal;
  • the possibility of manufacturing gates on an individual order;
  • compatibility with any other materials;
  • providing an overview.

However, some people perceive the latter advantage as a disadvantage. In this case, to hide the situation in the yard from the eyes of passers-by, you can attach polycarbonate sheets to the gate.

The downside is the large mass, which requires pouring a solid foundation and installing heavy poles during installation.

In addition to wood and metal, polymeric materials can also be used: vinyl and slate.

Varieties

After the choice of material has been made, the next step is to select the type of construction. What are the types of gates for a private house?

The entrance gate to a private house, the photos of which are below, can be:

  • sliding;
  • swing;
  • retractable;
  • lifting;
  • mechanical.

Today, two varieties are most common - swing and sliding.

Swing structures

These gates, pictures of which can be found on the Internet, are perhaps the most ancient solution. Their design is extremely simple. They are two wings, which are attached to the supporting pillars with the help of strong hinges. Their advantages are as follows:

  • ease of installation;
  • ease of maintenance.

The main disadvantage is the availability of space for their opening. In addition, stoppers must be provided, since during strong winds the sashes can damage the body of an incoming vehicle.

Sliding

The main advantage of this design is that no space is required for opening. However, there are also disadvantages, namely:

  1. Difficulty of installation.
  2. The need for more care due to the heavy load on small parts.
  3. Prone to failure due to factors such as rust and dust.

Style and design

What can be the design of the gates and gates of a private house, the photo below will show you clearly. Currently, there are a variety of design solutions that allow you to choose beautiful gates for a private house, the photos of which are presented in the article. However, for those who decide which gate to choose for the house, the photo gallery at the end of the article will help determine the direction of the search for a solution.

Gate

Speaking of gates, one cannot ignore the issue of the gate. Of course, the gate is a necessary structural element, since it is very inconvenient to open the gate at the entrance to the site every time.

What considerations should be taken into account when installing a gate? Here it is also worth first deciding on the material. It would be quite natural and logical to use the same material for the gate as for the gate. Otherwise, the stylistic harmony of the design will be violated. In addition, the purchase of different materials can create additional costs.

Where is the best place to make a wicket? The best place for a gate is next to the gate. A good solution is to use the same support posts to install the gate. This eliminates the need for an additional support column, which speeds up the installation process.

The most popular type of gates are classic swing gates. Some homeowners install sliding gates. However, due to the complexity of manufacturing, such a design is extremely rare.

Automatic system

For those owners of private houses who are fans of convenience and comfort, such a modern solution as an entrance gate in a private house is suitable, photo examples of which you will see below. Their feature is that they are equipped with an electric drive and operate in automatic mode. All they need is an electric motor of relatively low power and simple electronics.

Electric gates allow the owner to open and close them while in the house or in the car. Currently, there are designs equipped with sensors tuned to the signal of the owner's machine, and they themselves open or close when it is given.

As a rule, the electric drive is installed on sliding gates. Automation of the opening and closing of swing structures is expensive, and therefore rarely used.

If you are going to buy a cottage, a house or a garage soon, then you will certainly face the question of the safety of real estate and property. The main way to solve this issue is the gate, because it is they who separate the entrance or entrance to the territory of the garage or plot and close the view from passers-by. Before you add a gate to one or another object, you need to familiarize yourself with the main varieties of the first - this will allow you to make the right choice.

Gate types

Considering the types of gates, you can choose the best option for yourself. Depending on the design, they can be:

  • swing;
  • retractable;
  • sectional.

The most common type are swing gates that can fit into any garage or fence. However, they provide for the need for a large space. This point should be taken into account in advance. The supporting structures and the frame are made of rolled metal, while the sashes can be sheathed with colored profiled sheets, wooden crates, forged elements or sandwich panels.

Considering the types of gates, you can choose their retractable variety, which is the most convenient, therefore it is popular. Such designs have two drawbacks. The first of these is expressed in high cost, while the second is in the need for additional space. Sectional doors are used for garages. Most often they can be found in underground parking lots, warehouses and parking lots.

Varieties of swing gates

Swing gates are popular because they almost do not provide for the need for additional maintenance during operation. If we are talking about a classic design, then it has two wings fixed to. Considering the types of swing gates, it is necessary to distinguish bisexual and combined.

The second type of swing gate has a built-in gate, so it is often used for garages, warehouses and small summer cottages. Such a design can also be classified according to the material of manufacture. Swing gate types can be:

  • wooden;
  • metal;
  • made of polycarbonate;
  • forged.

Swing gates usually require the installation of load-bearing pillars. They are buried a meter or more, and then concreted. As pillars, you can use a metal profile tube with a square section with a side of 100 mm. As one of the most popular options, one should also highlight a wooden beam, as well as concrete supports.

Types of sectional doors

Such gates are sections connected by hinges. They move on tires attached to the opening. Such structures can be subdivided according to the type of canvas, it can be assembled from sandwich panels or can be represented by a panoramic canvas. In the first variant, we are talking about steel sheets that are interconnected and filled with heat-insulating material.

Panoramic canvas is made of extruded aluminum profiles, in which inserts of translucent material are installed.

If you are interested in the types of sectional doors, then you should consider another classification of them, which provides for the division of structures according to the area of \u200b\u200buse. Thus, sectional doors can be:

  • garage;
  • industrial;
  • panoramic.

The latter variety is one of the types of industrial gates. In this case, the canvas is assembled from separate panels. A feature is the possibility of viewing indoors and providing natural light. This solution is relevant for service stations, car dealerships and industrial facilities like fire departments.

rail gate

In private houses today you can see different types of gates. Among them, it is especially necessary to highlight the rail. This design has the form of sliding panels. If you decide to replace the old gate with the new one described in this section, then you will need a 0.5 m indent from the fence. Among other things, there must be a free flat space along it, which is equal to the length of the rolling panel.

Rail gates can also be cantilevered. According to the type of panel fastening, such structures are rail and hinged, as well as on rollers. The canvas in all three varieties has the same principle of movement, the difference will be only in the technical device. Rail gates are popular for several reasons, among them are:

  • the ability to endure the weight of any skin;
  • the impressive length of the panel covering the passage;
  • high level of resistance and resistance to wind loads.

However, before installing such a design, it is necessary to take into account the disadvantages. They lie in the fact that the opening must be well fortified. During operation, the chute in which the rail is installed must be periodically cleaned. The profile, which is located in the ground, under the influence of precipitation and the external environment, will eventually deform and change its original linear dimensions.

If you have considered all types of garage doors and have chosen a rail suspended version of them, then installation work should begin with the installation of a canopy that will act as a support for the structure. The metal profile will be used for the manufacture of beams. Small balls are installed inside the profile, with the help of which smooth movement along the rail will be ensured.

Retractable panels can be hung from above. In this case, the device with wheels and rollers is first installed on the panel. After that, the panel can be fixed to the hanger. To do this, it is necessary to use a transverse beam, the sectional shape of which should be concave inward. The suspension beam must be selected according to the weight of the panel. When purchasing a profile, you should pay attention to the weight for which the product is designed. It is not recommended to exceed the load, this will lead to deflection of the device and its failure.

Varieties of gates

In modern construction, a variety of types of gates and wickets are used. They can be classified according to their location. Thus, the gates can be independent, be part of the gate or be installed in a set with the gates that are located nearby. The latter variety is represented by three options.

First: there are two openings in the fence, a gate is installed in one, and a gate in the other. Second: there is a common opening in the fence, two objects are installed in it, but they are separated by a pole or rack. This element stands out against the background of the gate and the gate and separates the lanes of passage and passage. It is made from the following materials:

  • concrete;
  • stone;
  • bricks;
  • buta;
  • metal pipe.

The third option is similar to the previous one, but in this case the column is not allocated, as a result, one space can be formed.

Classification of gates and gates by material

The most common types of garage doors are those made of metal. The second place can be given to wood. However, if you decide to add a garage door with a gate, then you should choose corrugated board. Among its advantages, it is necessary to highlight high strength, low cost and the absence of a pattern on the material that would need to be selected during the installation process. The corrugated board has excellent protection against corrosion, it is durable, and you can choose the shade that you like. However, metal types of gates for a private house may corrode due to accidental damage to the protective layer, which sometimes occurs during installation or operation.

Wood also has a low cost, and for the manufacture of gates from it, a minimum set of tools is required. In addition, the design will have a pleasing appearance. But it should be borne in mind that it will turn out to be rather short-lived, fire hazardous and will have low mechanical strength.

Conclusion

Whatever types of gates are considered by modern property owners, the swing type is most often chosen. It is cheaper than the others, and also provides for the possibility of supplementing the design with automation. However, the latter does not always work properly in the harsh climate of Russia. If you want to save money, then such a design can be done independently by choosing budget materials for the work by the type of profiled sheet.

When erecting fences around your land or when building a garage, the question will definitely arise how to make a gate with your own hands. Before purchasing materials and getting down to work, it is necessary to decide which of the existing types of gates is best suited for installation in a particular case. Don't miscalculate in in all the nuances in advance, and choosing not the best design, you can doom yourself to a completely unnecessary laborious process of clearing the territory for their installation.

That is why you need to start by studying the information and features of their design.

Today, there are three main types of gates - these are retractable, swing and up-and-over. All of them seriously differ from each other constructively, so it is worth considering each type separately.

swing gate

The simplest scheme in execution - swing gates

Swing gates with a gate built into them or installed next to them are a traditional scheme that is most often used in private homes. It is based on pillars, two of which are set to the width of the gate, and the third, if necessary, determines the width of the gate if it is arranged next to the gate.

Gate leaves and wickets in this design are mounted on hinges welded to the support posts. They can be fixed to the outside of the supports or the inside. It will depend on this and on the hinge system in which direction the gate leaves will open - inward or outward.

Swing gate leaves are most often metal frames welded from a corner or a profile pipe, which can then be sheathed with different materials - thin metal sheets, corrugated board or wood.

The hinged version of the gate can also be made entirely of wood. In this case, boards are fixed to a reinforced frame made of timber, located on the inside of the wings.

In the manufacture of sashes, it is important to remember that they should not be too heavy, so as not to put a large load on the supporting posts and hinges. The nodes and details of the suspension themselves in size and strength must correspond to the weight of the valves.

A closing device is installed on the gate leaf - it can be a deadbolt or hinges for a lock, and sometimes a powerful latch. When closing the gate, the leaves in the lower part, in the middle of the entrance width, rest against the installed limiter, and when they are wide open, they can be fixed with spring clips.

The disadvantages of this design include the possible tilt of the supporting pillars and sagging of the wings, but this can only happen if the installation technology is violated or the weight from the leaves is incorrectly calculated. Therefore, it is necessary to properly deepen the foundation of the supports, not to use too heavy material for the canvases and to install the hinges corresponding to them in size.

The advantage of swing gates can be called the relative compactness of their placement. The design does not require clearing additional space along the fence, as it will be necessary to do for other types.

Swing gate installation

If swing gates are of moderate weight, for example, if they are made of corrugated board, then metal poles made of pipes with a diameter of 80 ÷ 100 mm or a profiled pipe with the same side size of its square section are well suited for them. Such supports will quite cope with their task. However, more massive pillars will do if they are easier to find.

Pillars-supports for gates are installed in two ways - by hammering and concreting.

  • Pillars are usually hammered to a depth of 1.2–1.3 m. This method has many advantages, the main of which are sufficient reliability and speed of work.

Installation is as follows:

- a hole of the required diameter is drilled, approximately half the planned depth of the pillars.

- now the pillars must be fixed to or to stationary buildings located in the yard;

- after that, loops are welded to the posts, to the places previously marked by level;

- the assembled sashes are hung on the welded hinges, the correctness of their convergence in the center is checked.

  • Concreting of pillars for installing gates gives increased rigidity and stability of the structure. Such supports will be required for wide or heavy sashes.

This method of installation is carried out without reinforcement or with the use of a reinforcing cup. Work is carried out in stages:

- first, a hole is drilled with a diameter of not less than 200-250 mm and a depth of 1.5-1.9 m. The exact size of the hole will depend on the section of the post.

- layers of sand and gravel are poured into the bottom of the pit and carefully compacted. Each of the layers should be about 100 mm;

- then a pole is installed in the pit, on a sand and gravel cushion;

- concrete is poured around it, and until the mortar has hardened, the column is set strictly vertically, fixed in this position with the help of props.

  • If a reinforcing structure is used to fix the post, then the installation is carried out in the same way as without reinforcement, until the cushion is rammed for the installation of the post.

On the pillow, in the drilled hole, the so-called reinforcing glass is first laid, and a pole is inserted into it. Then concrete is poured into the hole. In this case, supports for the pole may not even be needed, since the reinforcing structure will hold it.

After the concrete has completely hardened and gained due strength, massive loops are marked and welded on the pillars. We must not forget about leaving gaps that will allow the doors to open and close freely, even with a possible slight tilt of the pillars due to ground movement during snowmelt or long rains.

To avoid such deformations of the structure, it is possible to additionally fasten the pillars together with a beam welded to the lower parts of the pillars (it can be sunk into the ground). The frame will be even more rigid if equip it with an upper jumper, but in this case it will restrict the passage for trucks or a minibus.

sliding gate

Sliding gates are subdivided into several subspecies, and from them you can choose the one suitable for certain conditions. But almost each of them will require free space along. Therefore, you may have to work harder to make room for the free movement of the movable sash when it is opened.

Sliding gates are cantilevered, suspended and retractable, which run along a rail or other metal profile (channel, I-beam, etc.).

Video: types of sliding gates

1. The hanging option is not very popular for installation in the private sector, since the entry height is limited by the profile installed on top, on which the door leaf is suspended and moves along it.

2. Sliding gates that run along a rail installed in the opening and along the wall are also not a very popular option, especially in snowy and cold regions. The gate will move freely along the rail if it is cleared of ice and various debris, but in winter, with snow drifts or icing, the leaf will not be able to open and close without prior clearing. This version of the gate is rather good for the southern regions, where snow does not lie for a long time and there are no severe frosts.

This is the only, but very important design flaw. Otherwise, it is very convenient in that it does not require a vast territory for opening and closing.

On the rack from the side into which the sash will open, rollers and brackets holding the canvas are installed in the upper part.

Rollers are also installed at the bottom of the mobile gate leaf, along which it moves along a rail or profile mounted on the surface of the earth.

3. Console - the most convenient option of all types of sliding gates, especially since they have several different designs, from which you can choose the best one.

Such gates are rigidly fixed on the beam, which, moving in the cantilever assembly, moves the leaf leaf along with it.

Cantilever gates are more complex in design, but they work best in snowy winters, since their leaf never touches the ground. Another positive quality of this species can be considered that it does not have a height limiter, i.e. The area can be accessed by both cars and trucks. In the design of cantilever gates, powerful pillars-supports are installed not on two sides, but only on one side - it is in this direction that the sash will move when the passage is opened.

The cantilever beam can be located in three different positions - top, middle and bottom.

  • by the most widespread an option is the location of the movable beam in the middle of the door leaf. Due to its location, it enhances the rigidity of the structure. The console mechanism with guide rollers is located at a sufficient height so that it is not covered with snow, which means that the gate will be in working condition at any time of the year.

  • Cantilever gates with a movable beam installed at the bottom of the leaf are more vulnerable in winter and will require constant maintenance in the form of clearing from snow drifts and icing. Otherwise, this is also a convenient option, since the canvas does not come into contact with the ground, and it does not need to install a guide rail for it.
  • In the third case, the beam passes along the upper part of the canvas and will always be safe from snow blockages, water, and debris. But this version of the cantilever gate requires a particularly rigid reinforcement of the frame and leaf, otherwise it may deform in the lower part.

Cantilever gates are quite affordable for manufacturing on their own, but only if the owner has certain skills in such work. understands assembly drawings, has basic knowledge in physics and mechanics. With maximum effort, you can make such a gate that will be impossible to distinguish from factory products.

Any cantilever gate can be opened if equipped with an electric drive and an electronic remote control system. This will allow the owner, without leaving the car, using the key fob to open the passage.

Installation of sliding cantilever gates

Installing sliding or sliding gates is a much more complex undertaking than installing a swing version.

On the sides of the passage, when arranging this type of gate, as a rule, brick pillars are installed on which rollers, supporting brackets and catchers will be mounted.

The main load always falls on the channel, which is installed on on the a securely arranged foundation on the side of the gate where the leaf will be attached (if the console is located at the bottom) or on metal supports if the console is located in the center of the dense gate or at the top.

  • The foundation for the installation of the channel can be solid or consist of 2-3 pillars. The second option is more economical. A pit is dug for the foundation - it can consist of one pit or two or three for a columnar type. The depth should be from 1.2 to 1.5 m, width - 40 ÷ 50 cm, and length - at least 1.5 m.
  • Further, two pillows of sand and gravel are arranged in the pit, each 10 cm thick.
  • Then, a formwork is installed in the pit and a waterproofing material is laid in it - roofing material or a dense plastic film.
  • A reinforcing structure is fixed in the formwork, and then a ready-made concrete solution is poured with a strength grade of at least M-300
  • A channel with fittings welded to its shelves is installed over the filled surface. The channel is pressed into the concrete with the shelves down until they are completely immersed. After the final hardening of the concrete, a reliable metal platform should be obtained. The gate can be installed no earlier than a month after pouring the foundation.
  • The supporting frame is being made. For it, you need a metal corner or a square pipe with a cross section of 60 × 40 mm.
  • Additional cross members are welded to the frame of the carcass, giving the required rigidity to the structure. At the location of the console (in this case, from below), a guide cantilever beam must be welded to the frame, with the help of which the gate will move along the rollers.
  • Welded seams of the structure must be carefully cleaned of slag. The entire supporting frame must be primed and covered with paint for metal, which will keep it from corrosion.
  • It is fixed, sheet metal or boards, depending on the chosen design of the door leaf.
  • When the structure is ready, and the foundation with the installed cantilever channel has fully gained strength, you can proceed to the installation of the components and parts necessary to move the gate.

  • Cantilever blocks equipped with rollers are installed on the finished foundation with a channel.
  • Then the gates are rolled up on them, aligned strictly according to the level, and after that the blocks are welded to the channel.
  • Then, the top and end rollers are installed and fixed.
  • The lower and upper catchers are fixed to the opposite support post. They must be accurately calculated according to the location of the rolling rollers installed on the door leaf.
  • Further, if planned, an electric drive is installed, but the gate may well open manually.

Video instruction for installation of cantilever sliding gates

As mentioned above, the cantilever beam can be installed not only from below, but also in the middle or at the top of the door leaf.

In the manufacture and assembly of this type of gate, accurate calculation of all parameters and careful observance of dimensions are especially important, since any error can cause deformation of the structure.

Sliding gates

Overhead gate

This type of gate is well suited for equipping a garage with them. They are not suitable for driving into the yard, as they will limit the height. Such gates should be easy to close and open by lifting and sliding the leaf to a horizontal position up, under the garage ceiling.

Up-and-over doors are the perfect solution for your garage.

During opening or closing, the lower part of the sash protrudes slightly forward, outside the garage, that's why By installing a similar type of gate, you need to calculate how close you can fit the car so that it does not interfere with the opening process.

The canvas is made of a metal frame, which is sheathed, most often, with metal sheets, wood or composite impact-resistant materials. The positive qualities of this type of gate are reliability and compactness in the open position, in contrast to options with two swing leaves.

To make this design yourself, you must have drawings with all the necessary parameters.

  • To install the gate, you will need to make not only a frame for closing the passage, but also another one on which the gate will be mounted. Sometimes it is framed by the entrance to the garage, but more often additional guides are added, along which, when the gate is opened, rollers mounted on the canvas will roll. They also perform the function of a device that supports the canvas from above in an open position.

  • In this case, inside the garage, the frame will be L-shaped on both sides of the entrance. Its dimensions must provide the necessary space for the passage of the door leaf between the ceiling and additional guides.
  • On the canvas on both sides, top and bottom, rollers are installed that will walk along the guides when moving the gate.
  • On both sides to the frame installed in the opening, two levers are mounted that will lift the canvas when opened. Shock absorbers are required - they will soften the blow when closing. The levers are connected to springs that are adjusted to the desired force - they should not be overtightened or loose, but at the same time, the sash should tightly close the entrance opening.

  • The supporting stationary frame must be securely fastened to the opening with anchors, as it will be subjected to significant stress all the time.
  • Further, when the entire structure is mounted, it is possible to equip the gate with fittings and fix additional elements.

If you plan to install an electric drive, then this process is carried out last, and it is better to entrust this work to specialists. An electric opening system is a rather expensive pleasure, so it’s better not to risk it if you don’t have the skill in installing and debugging such equipment.

Having carefully studied the instructions and drawings, having prepared all the necessary materials, and also having sufficiently high work skills, you can assemble any design from the presented ones yourself. But it is better if the work is done together with a knowledgeable master - then it will go much faster and better.

A good fence around the dacha requires strong gates that will not violate the overall design style of your favorite hacienda. Gates for summer cottages or houses will hospitably let in their own, and all unwanted personalities will be left “overboard”. A car with manure will pass through them, a tractor for plowing a garden, but when a girl with a backpack comes out, she won’t have to plow or close a two-meter panel for a long time. And a reliable lock, a strong deadbolt, and, if desired, nice decorative elements rely on the gate. But their choice still begins with the design. We bring to your attention a brief overview of the gate, which can be installed for a summer residence, a cottage or a private house.

What are the gates

Gate models are divided into three main types according to the opening method: sliding, swinging and retractable. There are more exotic designs, such as rolling shutters, but it is better to choose from the top three. If you want to surprise all the neighbors, make the design original, but don't be smart with the gate device. Rare or intricate models are, unfortunately, too short-lived.

Swing gates - more familiar to giving

One or two wings of swing gates open almost like the door of an apartment or a refrigerator. Have you tried climbing into the refrigerator when a table is pressed against its door? Here's the thing, it's impossible.

Swing gates need space to open them safely. The wider the gate, the more space is required. If they swing open to the outside, you will not be able to drive close to them by car. If inside, you will have to make sure that part of the yard remains free.

But this design is easier than any other to do it yourself. It will harmoniously fit into the design of the antique-style area, which modern gates cannot do. But it will not spoil the hacienda in the "futuristic" spirit: the main thing here is to choose the right materials!

In addition, such gates may be the best solution for summer cottages where your elderly parents live for a long time. It is often difficult for older people to get used to even small innovations; it is easier to put up familiar gates for them than to accustom them to modern ones.

One of the problems with swing gates is the sagging of the leaves, especially if they are kept open for a long time, as in the photo below.

A solution option is leafs with wheels, which serve as an additional support and prevent wear of the door hinges.

Sliding gates for a cottage or a country house - the most convenient

These gates do not require additional space, like swing gates - they "ride" along the fence. But a place for a lateral shift must be provided. If at the slightest step to the right or left you run into a corner post, then into a country house, sliding gates are not for you. They will have nowhere to roll back!

For such gates, the problem of sagging is hardly relevant. But sometimes you have to take care of them. The good old swing gates would rather fall off than stop opening, for example, due to rust. But the sliding gates can jam. So you have to make sure that dirt does not get into the mechanism. Snow or ice can also interfere with the normal movement of the valves.

Although swing gates can also be equipped with an automatic opening device, this is easier to do with sliding models. Then the canvas will smoothly move to the side after pressing the button. Some summer residents even put a remote control on such gates so that they do not get out of the car at the entrance.

If you decide to make a sliding gate with an electric drive, consider the possibility of a power outage. In addition, in cold weather, this luxury may refuse to work. So the design must be designed taking into account the need to sometimes open the gate manually, and not to the strongest person in the family.

If you live in a cottage and want to protect yourself from thieves, put swing gates that open inwards. Equipping them with a powerful deadbolt, you will get, in addition to the fence, castle, another "guard". Even if the thieves outsmart the lock, they won't be able to enter until they figured out how to cut the bolt or get over the top.

However, if it really makes sense for you to be afraid of theft, you should install a video surveillance system, an alarm system, and conclude an agreement with a security agency. But most summer residents do not need such difficulties, although a deadbolt can help them, calming their nerves by the very fact of existence.

Sliding gates are similar to sliding gates, with the only difference being that the leaves "go" in two directions. This can be inconvenient when opening manually. However, in the case of very wide entrances, it is better to install them. After all, it will be difficult to roll back a too long and massive single sash manually.

Which lock is best for the gate

Choosing a lock is such a delicate issue that a separate article is needed to list all the tricks. I will only tell you the main principle: the castle should match the gate and the fence in terms of price! Even better, it was a little more expensive than it should be. An elite model on a plywood door is, of course, absurd. But it is always useful to provide yourself with a margin of safety.

Fence gate with gate

Next to the gates intended for the passage of cars, it would be nice to put a separate gate for the passage of people. This is necessary so as not to mess around with opening massive gates every time, especially if they are hinged.

Often the gate is cut through in one of the leaves, but often it is made independent. In any case, such an entrance needs a lock as strong as your main gate.

Important little things when building a fence with gates

  • The fence and the gate must be of the same price category. This is more important than making them from similar materials. Imagine, for example, a modest wooden fence, and with it an unassuming metal gate. This pair looks good. Now imagine an old rusty mesh fence topped with an absurdly expensive entrance group "with swans or dragons." Or, on the contrary: a new, durable fence made of freshly planed boards, mutilated by a crooked old gate, which is ready to collapse under its own weight. Such combinations are appropriate only for a while - when you have already changed the fence, and the gate is about to be brought up. Still, it is desirable to change both at the same time.
  • Some of the materials used to make the gate have a sail effect. So, if the corrugated board was installed on a metal frame and fixed only around the perimeter, the gate may begin to make unpleasant sounds. They appear under the influence of strong winds or sudden changes in air temperature. This is not a sign of a broken gate! Nevertheless, such “music” annoys many summer residents. To prevent it from sounding, install a few additional stiffeners to fasten the material.
  • You arrive at the dacha in the middle of winter, you try to drive to the site, but you cannot open the gates because snow drifts interfere. Cursing, you take out a shovel and for a long time depict a small tractor. Like the picture? I do not think. Some owners, in order to avoid such a problem, hang the bottom of each sash on hinges. Then, when opening over the snow, it bends. However, the design will have to be thought out so that thieves do not use the hole.
  • The width of the gate is calculated not according to your favorite small car, but according to the largest transport that you intend to take. You are planning a construction site, will cars with sand drive up? It would be nice to take into account their dimensions. And it will turn out a little strange: sand was ordered, but you can’t accept it. The same if you are going to buy manure or sapropel as a fertilizer by machines. Make sure there is enough free space outside the gate.
  • What is more important, reliability or design? You, I think, will say that strength is more important. But still, sometimes aesthetic considerations win over cold reason. For example, wooden gates are very unreliable, they are easy to knock down, even rammed by a passenger car. But on the other hand, they fit so wonderfully into the rustic atmosphere of your favorite dacha! You can supply a wooden door with a powerful metal frame. Or make something like metal apartment doors, decorated on the one hand - with a tree. And you can choose one of the modern materials, having thought through the appearance of your gate so that it does not resemble a factory checkpoint.
