DIY garage swing gates. DIY garage doors: drawings, videos and photos DIY metal garage doors drawings

The safety of the car and the comfort of staying in the room depend on the quality of the garage door, therefore, their manufacture should be approached with all responsibility. There are several options for gates: they differ primarily in the opening mechanism. Modern models are quite complex, they require special skills and tools for installation, but installing classic swing garage doors with your own hands will work without experience of such work.

Choosing the type of garage door

Self-assembly of the gate - this is a great way to save money on building a garage... However, before proceeding with the task, it is worth considering the existing types of structures and determining the most suitable one. The choice depends on many factors, and if models with a complex mechanism turn out to be optimal, it makes sense to turn to specialists - their incorrect installation with their own hands can lead to various problems with the functioning of the structure.

Sliding gates

Sliding gates are one wide sash that slides sideways when opened.

Guides are attached to the frame of the structure, along which the sash travels, and catchers that hold it in the open position. Depending on the design of the guides, the gates can be suspended, cantilever and rail; options differ in size, ease of use, number of parts and complexity of installation.

Like other types of garage doors, sliding structures can be manual and automatic.... In the second case, an electric drive is connected to the frame, the control of which can be stationary or remote.

Although it is not difficult to make such a gate to the garage with your own hands, they are rarely chosen, since they have more disadvantages than advantages. Their main advantage is the saving of space outside, however, a lot of space is required inside the room - it must be very wide. Because of this, recoil models are often used outside, embedding in the site fence. These structures are used in industrial facilities and hangars.

The disadvantages also include the need to install a reinforced frame capable of holding a suspended sliding sash, which has a larger size and weight than in the case of swing options.

It is important to constantly monitor the rollers so that the structure does not jam.

Lift-and-turn structures

The swing-type gate leaf rotates around its horizontal axis, rises to the ceiling and is suspended flat above the opening. The mechanism is very convenient and reliable, space is saved both outside and inside the garage. However, such gates have some peculiarities, because of which their use may not be the best solution.

The main design is solid sash... To lift it to the ceiling was easier, you have to reduce its weight as much as possible. This affects the range of possible materials of manufacture: most often the frame is made of steel tubes of small cross-section, but an aluminum profile can also be used. For cladding, thin galvanized metal is used. Because of this, the thermal insulation characteristics are reduced, which leads to increased energy consumption for heating the garage.

If the structure is made of aluminum, its protective ability significantly deteriorates - the rigidity of the frame is not enough to withstand significant physical exertion. Therefore, lift-and-turn structures are used mainly in fenced areas equipped with additional levels of safety. They are also used inside warehouses.

It is very difficult to install a model of this type with your own hands - assembling the lifting mechanism requires special knowledge and skills.

Lifting-sectional and roll mechanisms

Overhead sectional doors are similar to up-and-over in principle of operation, but differ in design: instead of a solid leaf, they use a movable leaf, consisting of interconnected lamellas. Because of this, such gates are considered a type of blinds.

The frame consists of two parts: one is installed along the perimeter of the opening, the second - under the ceiling of the garage. It is assembled from a guide profile. Each sash lamella has rollers on the lateral edges, with the help of which the leaf moves along the guides. An electric drive is connected to the upper part of the frame, which is connected to the sash with a cable. When the gate is activated, the motor pulls the canvas, lifting it to the ceiling.

A canvas is made of sandwich panels, which ensures sufficient structural rigidity and high-quality thermal insulation of the garage. The gates can be of different configurations and sizes. The canvas does not have to rise to the ceiling - in some models, the sash moves to the side. Thanks to the flexibility of the lamella joints, this allows for sliding garage doors with a small footprint.

Rolling shutters are an analogue of overhead sectional structures, characterized in that the door leaf does not move away, but is wound on a shaft. This saves space, but in this case the sash is made of thin, narrow slats and has lower thermal insulation and protective characteristics.

Structures of this type can be assembled independently, but all components, including lamellas and sashes, will have to be purchased ready-made. Companies supplying such products usually provide a gate installation service, so there is no point in doing the work yourself. In addition, without knowing the nuances, it is easy to make mistakes when installing gate parts, which will lead to their incorrect functioning.

Swing gates

Classic swing gates usually consist of two hinged leaves. An ordinary front door is built into one of the canvases. The sash consists of a frame, which is sheathed with sheet metal, sandwich panels, wood and other materials. Thermal insulation material can be placed between the outer and inner surfaces.

This is the most economical material, and thanks to the simple design, installing such a gate with your own hands will not be a problem. They also provide the most reliable protection for your garage.

Thus, in the absence of skills in assembling complex lifting and sliding mechanisms and working with electronics, a simple swing gate will be the best option.

If ease of use and space saving are important, you should pay attention to the more advanced options.

Project development

The quality of the gate depends on how correctly the dimensions of their elements are selected and how accurately the parts are fitted to each other, therefore, before making a garage door with your own hands, you need to draw up a project. Despite the simplicity of the swing structure, it consists of many parts, and without drawings or sketches, it will be easy to make mistakes in the work.

First of all, you need to decide on the size of the gate. To make them convenient to use, the total width of the flaps should be 0.6 m greater than the width of the car. Most often, the size of the gate is chosen within 2−4 m; if the width exceeds 5 m, the operation of the structure will be difficult. The height of the flaps is also calculated based on the dimensions of the vehicle.

The swing gate design includes a frame, which is fixed along the perimeter of the garage opening, and two leaves, one of which has a built-in wicket, - they are fixed to the frame with hinges. The frame is made of a 65 mm wide steel corner. For the sash frame, it is better to choose a profile pipe with a rectangular section; its size can be any.

The outer surface of the sash is sheathed with 3 mm thick sheet steel. From the inside, the frame can be sheathed with boards, plywood. This is done if the gate is insulated. The amount of materials is calculated based on the sash area.

Tools and materials

To assemble a high-quality swing structure yourself, you will need skills in handling basic construction tools, as well as the ability to use a welding machine. It is impossible to connect parts with fasteners: in this case, the reliability of the structure will be insufficient. Self-tapping screws are useful only when installing the inner paneling of the sashes.

To work, you need the following set of tools:

  • manual welding machine - it is better for a beginner to choose an inverter for arc welding, it is easier to use it;
  • an electric generator of sufficient power for welding, if there is no possibility of connecting to the mains;
  • grinder with a set of wheels for cutting and grinding;
  • Sander;
  • drill with drills for metal;
  • screwdriver;
  • brush or roller;
  • measuring instruments - tape measure, set of metal squares, level.

The set of materials required depends on the specifics of the project. In general, you need to prepare:

  • steel rectangular profile or corners for the manufacture of the gate frame, frame and stiffeners of the sash;
  • 6 reinforced welded hinges;
  • sheet metal;
  • steel rods;
  • a set of self-tapping screws;
  • wooden blocks;
  • liquid Nails;
  • insulation - mineral wool or foam, a small amount of foamed polyethylene foam;
  • sheet material for interior cladding;
  • primer and paint;
  • polyurethane foam.

Additionally, you should purchase a lock, locks, door handles and other accessories.

Manufacturing instruction

The gates are made in the following order: first, the frame and the frame are cooked, then the sashes are sheathed, after which the structure is installed on the garage opening. For greater convenience, welding should be carried out on a flat horizontal surface. When the gate is fixed, the interior cladding, fittings installation and decorative finishing are carried out.

Assembling the frame

The frame is assembled in the same way, regardless of the number, size of leaves and the presence of a wicket. It will consist of two identical rectangles - external and internal, which are connected by reinforcement or strips of sheet steel.

The order of work is as follows:

  1. A corner or steel profile is cut with a grinder. The ends of the segments are cut at an angle of 45 °.
  2. The segments are laid out on a flat surface. If there is no suitable space, bricks or other supports can be used. It is important that the parts lie in the same plane - this should be checked using a level at each stage of work. After welding, mistakes made will be very difficult to correct.
  3. The frame elements are welded at the corners. If this part of the gate is made from a corner, the parts can be overlapped by overlapping shelves.
  4. The corners are additionally reinforced with scraps of reinforcement to increase the rigidity of the structure.
  5. Sheet metal mounting pads are welded to the inside of the frame.
  6. Weld seams are sanded - the frame must be perfectly smooth on the outside so that the sash fits snugly.

It is important to consider in advance how to fix the frame on the garage wall. There are two options: make steel mortgages next to the opening and weld fastening pads to them, or drill into the last holes for fastening with anchors.

Sash welding and sheathing

The sash frame is assembled in the same way as the frame - by welding the sections of the profile together. To work conveniently, you should put the finished frame on a flat surface and insert the frame parts into it. The dimensions of the sections for the leaves should be 15-20 mm less to provide a gap - this will simplify the operation of the gate.

Unlike the frame, the sash frame must have additional stiffeners. To save money, they can be made from pipes with a smaller cross-sectional area. Ribs can be diagonal or vertical, in the second case, they run in the middle of each valve.

After welding and polishing of the frame, the sashes are sheathed. This is done as follows:

  1. The sheet metal is cut to fit the flaps. After welding, it should extend beyond the edges of the frame by 15-20 mm (by the size of the gap).
  2. One of the leaves is cut so that it is 10-20 mm narrower than the second - so the gate elements will fit snugly against each other.
  3. The sheets are welded to the frame. First, you should fasten the parts in the corners and in the center, then connect the metal along the perimeter of the flaps.

After welding is complete, hinges are attached to the gate. The lower part of the part is welded to the frame, the upper part is welded to the sash. For better fixation, the hinges can be reinforced with reinforcement inserts, which are welded to the inside of each product.

Installation of the structure

A fully welded structure is installed in the door opening; due to its large mass, an assistant will be needed at this stage. It is recommended to carry out the installation in parallel with the construction of the garage walls.

Before placing the gate in the opening, connect the outer and inner parts of the frame. For this, strips of sheet steel 40 mm wide are used; their length should be equal to the thickness of the garage wall. Parts are installed with a step of 60 cm around the entire perimeter of the frame.

If the gate is being installed in a ready-made garage, anchoring is the best option. If the wall is still under construction, pieces of reinforcement should be bricked into it, to which the inner part of the frame is then welded.

After the installation is completed, only install fittings... Hinges and a padlock are sufficient for minimum security. More complex products are installed according to the instructions from the manufacturer. Completely finished doors are primed and painted. From the inside, the sash can be insulated with mineral wool, fixing it with liquid nails, and if foam is used, it should be laid on a crate of wooden bars.

Knowing how to make a garage door with your own hands, you can assemble a structure of any configuration. Instead of metal for the manufacture of the frame, the use of wood is allowed. You can also sheathe the gate with any similar sheet material.

Swinging doors will be the best choice for the garage owner who values high reliability at a low price. It is this design that will allow the car enthusiast to be calm about the iron horse left in the garage and save as much as possible at the same time. And what is also important - such gates are the easiest to mount and install yourself.

What do swing gates look like?

The simplest swing gate design for a garage consists of:

  • frames to fit the doorway;
  • two leaves;
  • loops;
  • fittings - locks, handles, alarm systems and various limiters that hold the gate in the desired position.

Very often they are located in one of the valves. Also, for ease of use, the gates are equipped with remote-controlled automatics that allow you to open the doors without leaving the car. Most often, swing garage doors are made of metal - the frame of the frame is welded from the profile, hinges and the door leaf are welded onto it from steel sheet 3-5 mm thick. If safety is not so important for the car owner, steel sheets are replaced with profiled sheets, panels or wood.

Over time, the doors on swing gates can begin to sag. Most often this happens due to weak loops. Therefore, before purchasing accessories for garage doors, it is necessary to calculate the mass of the assembled sashes and choose hinges with a margin of safety.

How to make a swing gate with your own hands

To make a garage door with your own hands, you will need drawings containing all the necessary information about the location, dimensions of the doors, the attachment points for hinges and locks. Experience with a welding machine and locksmith skills will come in handy.

Make sure there is enough space in front of the garage for a car with the doors fully open. When everything is accounted for on paper, prepare the following materials:

  • profile pipe with a cross section of 60x40 mm for the frame of the doorway;
  • corner for making the frame of the shutters;
  • steel sheets up to 5 mm thick;
  • loops;
  • all the necessary accessories.

You will also need tools:

  • building level;
  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • roulette.

If the gate will be equipped with automatic equipment, select a set of equipment in advance and think over the electrical wiring to the installation site.

Separately take care of the purchase of protective equipment - a mask and a welder's suit, goggles and a respirator, gloves.

When working with a grinder and a welding machine, there is a great risk of damaging your eyes, so in no case should you neglect all the necessary protective equipment.

We make the metal frame of the doorway

Since we already have all the necessary drawings, the dimensions for all elements of the garage doors must be taken from them and carefully measured with a tape measure before cutting. Having cut off four frame parts with a grinder, they are laid out on a flat surface, avoiding distortions. The frame is welded at the corners, constantly controlling the horizontal level of the entire structure and its shape. It should be strictly rectangular. The finished frame is attached to the walls of the garage with anchor bolts.

We weld the frame of the sashes

Frames for both doors are made in the same way as the frame of the opening itself, observing the size and shape of the frame. In the course of work, the compliance of the dimensions of both frames should be checked - the inner one should fit into the outer one exactly, without forming gaps and inconsistencies. For the doors to move freely, the optimal clearance between the frames should be 5–7 mm. When welding and fitting, wooden inserts of the appropriate thickness are inserted between the frames.

To give the entire structure the necessary rigidity, the frame is reinforced with diagonal elements. As a rule, the diagonal parts come from the attachment points of the upper hinges and come together at the bottom center of the goal.

The door leaf is welded onto the finished frame - steel sheets. It should be noted that the gaps between the sash frames and the frame must be covered with steel sheets.

If desired, a wicket is arranged in one of the doors.

At the end of welding work on the frame, all seams should be sanded and painted over. In this case, burrs on the seams will not interfere with the free movement of the doors, and the welds will not rust.

Welding on hinges and hanging the gate leaves

Standard hinges for hinged gates consist of an upper and a lower part. The lower part, on which the pin is located, is welded onto the gate frame, and the upper part is welded onto the sash. Since swing garage doors are heavy, you need to hang them with assistants. At this stage of work, high accuracy is also required. The smooth running of the shutters and the serviceability of the entire structure depend on correctly installed hinges.

If the sash assembly is very heavy, it is better to hang them horizontally. In this case, the frame of the opening after manufacturing is attached to the walls of the garage last.

Automatic swing gates

The use of automation for swing garage doors has long been a surprise. There is a large selection of automatic systems and drives on sale that can make entering and leaving the garage as comfortable as possible. In addition to comfort, the automatic gate drive provides:

  • increased service life of the loops;
  • stable load on the supporting frame;
  • smooth operation in all weather conditions.

The higher the gate and the greater the weight of the wings, the greater the need to equip the gate with automatics, especially if the gate is regularly used by women.

Automatic gates are convenient in that there is no need to manually lock them. Automation blocks any attempts to open doors with hands until a signal is received by the control sensor. The downside in this system is the dependence of work on the presence of electric current. Without light, mechanics simply won't work. To solve the problem, an unlocking system is installed. Most often it comes as an additional option to the drive kit. An alternative is to connect the automation to a backup power source - a battery or a generator.

Currently, there are two types of drives for automatic swing gates - lever and linear. The latter is preferable, since it is designed for a large sash weight and strong gusts of wind.

Painting and insulation of gates

Before painting, clean the metal surface with a grinder. Then the gate is covered with a primer in two or three layers and paint for metal, suitable for external work.

For most car enthusiasts, the presence of insulation in the garage is a necessity so that all car maintenance work is carried out under normal temperature conditions. In addition, a workshop is often arranged in the garage. As a heater for swing garage doors, polystyrene, mineral wool, felt, cork slabs, penoizol, extruded polystyrene are usually used.

After installing fittings, insulation and painting, swing garage doors can be considered completely ready.

Self-production of garage swing gates - video

For a home craftsman who has decided to build a reliable garage door with his own hands, the diagram (drawing), according to which they will be assembled, should become the main document. On its basis, it is possible to calculate the amount of materials needed for work and to adjust the sashes to the opening with maximum accuracy in order to exclude moisture and cold air from entering the room in winter. Therefore, you need to take this stage of work on the device of the gate in the garage with the utmost seriousness.

When designing swing garage doors, care must be taken to ensure that the doors can be opened at any time of the year.

The assembly and installation of the finished structure will be another important task. The safety of the car and the service life of the gates themselves will depend on the thoroughness of each operation of this process, the replacement of which will require an investment of money and additional efforts of the owner.

What should be done before starting work?

When installing swing garage doors, first of all, you should evaluate the features of the relief of the place where the garage is located. Considering that the sashes can reach a width of 2.5-3 m, care must be taken to ensure that they can open outward without hindrance at any time of the year.

Their opening angle must be at least 90 ° to ensure the free movement of the car through the opening, without the risk of damaging the side surfaces of the body. If it is impossible to install a gate with leaves, you will have to choose more expensive models with a lifting mechanism, roller shutters or sliding gates. In any case, before preparing the necessary tools and materials, the master will need a diagram, which can also be drawn with your own hands.

During the manufacture of the drawing, you will need to apply the following dimensions to the paper:

  • the width of the opening, which is determined taking into account the width of the vehicle body, plus 30-50 cm on each side from it to the door frame;
  • gate height equal to 2-2.2 m for a passenger car of any model and not less than 2.5-3 m for a jeep or minibus;
  • the size of the leaves, each of which is equal to half the width of the gate;
  • the dimensions of the wicket and the distance to its frame from the edges of the sash;
  • the height of the hinges of the leaves and wickets, the location of the eyelets for locks and internal locks of the gate.

In addition to the main dimensions of the gate, it will be necessary to apply the location of the stiffeners on the doors and the wicket to the diagram. In its finished form, a drawing of a swing garage door may look like in fig. 1.

In addition to materials, you need to ensure that the following tools are at hand:

  • Bulgarian;
  • construction and hydraulic level;
  • tape measure, square;
  • welding machine.

Using a grinder, cut a corner for the manufacture of the door frame, frame and stiffeners for the leaves and wickets according to individual sizes and needs.

How to mount the gate frame?

This part consists of 2 rectangular structures, which will subsequently be connected to each other. On the outer part of the frame, hinges for the sash canopy are fixed, the inner one is used to hold the gate in the wall opening. They should be made from a corner of at least 6.5 cm wide in order to securely hold the garage doors made by the owner of the building with their own hands when the doors are open.

Figure 2. Scheme of the stiffening ribs of the door frame.

Ideally, the frame should be installed during the construction of the garage.

  1. For the manufacture of frame parts, you will need to cut 8 pieces of a corner with a length equal to the width and height of the gate (4 pieces for each measurement). Expand the material on a flat surface, forming rectangles from the obtained segments. By measuring diagonals and angles, achieve a perfect match of the details to the opening of the garage wall.
  2. Welding machine to connect parts of structures.
  3. Install the resulting rectangular parts in the opening, adjusting in place, and connect the external and internal parts with crossbars from a bar or metal strips, as in Fig. 2. dividing the height and width of the gate into equal segments. When using a bar, you can make through holes in the garage wall and, driving pieces of reinforcement of the required length into them, weld them to the frame parts. Most often, the connecting elements are welded over the edges of the opening.

Manufacturing and installation of gate leaves

According to the drawings, measure and cut parts of the corner 4x4 cm wide and unfold them, forming the frame of future doors and wickets. Align, measuring the corners and diagonals of each of the rectangular structures, and weld the frames.

Cut the steel sheet or profiled sheet according to the dimensions of the sashes, taking into account that their edges should form an overlap with a width of 2-3 cm around the perimeter of the gate frame. With the same overlap, the door leaf should also be made. Such a measure is needed in order to close the gaps between the frame and the sash frame. This will prevent excess moisture from entering through the cracks, eliminate the occurrence of drafts in the insulated garage and additionally protect the garage owner from strangers entering the room.

To attach the sashes to the frame, you will need to weld the hinges:

After installing the leaves in place, hang the wicket on one of them using the same sequence of actions that was used for the gate. Install the latches, hooks and handles after the sashes are completely assembled. Weld the lugs for the padlock in the desired place, install the mortise lock according to the instructions, using welding or a threaded connection.

In a heated room, garage doors are installed with their own hands, additionally insulating them with any known heat-insulating material. To hold it in place on the inside of the flaps, you need to fix a sheet of thin steel or corrugated sheet. This can be done by welding or using metal screws.

How to mount other types of gates?

Overhead and roller shutter gates imply the use of ready-made mechanisms for opening and closing, so they are more often bought ready for installation or ordered after having previously designed a drawing of a garage door. In such cases, you can only make and install the door frame and hang the door leaf according to the attached instructions.

The installation of sliding gates does not require a frame, as for other designs. Making such a gate with your own hands consists in welding a single large sash. To do this, you can use the sequence of actions, as in the manufacture of a sash with a wicket. To hang such gates, guides are installed at the top and bottom of the opening along which the leaf of the sash will move. All fittings are purchased ready-made, and installation is reduced to placing parts in regular places in accordance with the instructions.

The simplest and most inexpensive garage doors that can be made by a person with metal working skills are swing doors. It is they who are most often installed by the owners of garages in garage complexes and in private backyards.

Today, overhead garage doors are very popular, and they are also a convenient, reliable and practical protection for a garage, but at the same time, factory options are quite expensive. Opening with the help of a special mechanism, they take a horizontal position under the ceiling and move forward for a short length, thereby forming a small shelter in the form of a visor. As already mentioned, factory samples are quite expensive, but no one bothers to study the Internet resources for the independent manufacture of such gates, and armed with the necessary tools and drawings to make them with your own hands.

Advantages and disadvantages of the lifting structure

The lifting structure perfectly fulfills the function assigned to it and has a number of indisputable advantages over other types of garage doors, but at the same time it is not without its disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • No additional opening space required. Unused space under the ceiling is used.
  • The one-piece construction of the blade provides reliable protection against penetration.
  • Any external decoration and decoration can be used.
  • The door leaf can be additionally insulated with expanded polystyrene.
  • It is possible to supply equipment for automatic opening.
  • Can be used in both single and double garages.

The disadvantages are primarily due to the design features of the lifting mechanism and the inability to do it otherwise.

Disadvantages:

  • Installation is only possible in rectangular openings.
  • In case of damage, a one-piece canvas must be replaced, since it does not imply partial repair.
  • When the door is open, the opening height decreases.
  • The gate mechanism is designed for a certain load and this should be taken into account when insulating.
  • Some complexity of installation.

The device and scheme of work of folding garage doors

The lifting (panel) gate system is a fairly simple mechanical device. The main and load-bearing elements are the frame, guides and a lever-spring mechanism that moves the sash. The mechanism can be controlled either manually or using an electric drive controlled by a remote control (remote control). When opening the gate, levers attached to the bottom of the sash are used, and two guides for the movement of the rollers, fixed at the top at the ends of the sash. Opening is carried out by lifting the lower part of the sash by the handle and is done quite easily, since the stretched springs of the lever mechanism help in opening the gate.

There are two types of overhead gate mechanisms:

  1. Lever-spring is a fairly simple and reliable mechanism that is popular among garage owners. Mounting features: precise adjustment of the tension springs and high quality and precision mounting of the roller guides.
  2. With counterweights - it is mainly used on doors with a large sash weight. The cable is attached to the bottom corners of the sash and passes through the block to a counterweight attached to the other end of the winch.

Lifting garage door drawing

When preparing a drawing for your opening dimensions, you should use ready-made solutions, slightly adjusting them to your dimensions. Here is an example of blueprints for making a gate:

Frame drawing, dimensions must be set according to your gate dimensions.

What is required for manufacturing

For the manufacture of the sash frame, rectangular shaped pipes with dimensions 40 * 20 and a wall thickness of 2 mm are most suitable. For transverse and longitudinal spars, we also use profile pipes, but smaller sizes - namely 20 * 20 * 2 mm, to reduce the weight of the structure. For sewing up the front and inner sides of the sash, a profile sheet is best suited, since it is already coated with an anti-corrosion compound from the factory. You can also use galvanized sheet metal.

For guides, it is ideal to use a channel with a width of up to 20 cm. The size of the channel shelf depends on the width of the rollers used in your particular case. The box, to which the lever-spring mechanism is attached in the garage doorway, can be made of a wooden beam 100 * 50 mm. For these purposes, you can also use a metal corner with a shelf of 50 mm.

Sliding rollers and lever-spring rollers are purchased separately from a retractable gate store.

For thermal insulation of the gate, for reasons of price and quality, it is advisable to use expanded polystyrene with a thickness of 40 mm and a density of 15 to 25 kg / m 3.

Instruments

To work, the following tools should be at hand:

  • Bulgarian;
  • welding machine;
  • tape measure, pencil;
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver, screwdriver;
  • drill, drill;
  • set of wrenches;
  • level.

Step-by-step manufacturing instructions

  1. The frame installed in the opening is the main power element of the gate. It accounts for the main load of the entire garage door system. The box is made of a 100 * 50 mm wooden bar or a thick metal corner. The width of the corner shelf should be 1.5 times wider than the sash thickness, that is, if the sash thickness is 40 mm, then we take the corner with shelves at least 60 mm. The details of the box are installed with the letter P, two on the sides of the opening, one on top. If we use wood, then we fix it with 100 mm self-tapping screws into pre-prepared wooden mortgages. In the case of using a corner, we make fasteners for anchor bolts, however, they are perfect for the first case as well.
  2. Let's start assembling the frame for the gate leaf. We cut the profile pipe according to your drawing. We lay out the frame elements on a flat horizontal surface and, having checked the right angles with a square, grab the joints. Before fully welding the joints, check the length of the frame diagonals with a piece of cord or tape measure. If necessary, you can correct the product and proceed with the full welding of the joints. We weld gussets to the corners of the frame, as shown in the drawing, to strengthen the rigidity of the structure.
  3. We clean the welded seams from burrs and the entire frame from rust with a grinder.

  4. We cover the frame with an anticorrosive primer and paint it with alkyd enamel in 2 layers with intermediate drying.
  5. We weld to the upper corners in the end, brackets with rollers.
  6. We put it on the frame and fasten the profile sheet with self-tapping screws with a drill and a rubber washer in increments of 15–20 cm. We attach the sash opening handle to the M8-M10 bolts. This operation can be done at the end of installation work, which significantly reduces the physical stress on workers when checking the operation of mechanisms.
  7. We attach roller guides to the ceiling. We check their parallelism and perpendicularity to the opening.
  8. We temporarily install the sash in the opening to mark the attachment point of the lever-spring mechanism. We remove the sash and fasten the levers along the marks to its ends with self-tapping screws.
  9. We install the sash and check the operation of the gate. If everything is in order - the gate opens and closes easily, then we remove the sash and attach the levers to the bolted connections.
  10. Installing and adjusting the springs in their places and checking the functionality.
  11. Bonding a rubber seal around the perimeter of the frame to seal the gaps.
  12. Installing a door lock.

How and what to insulate

Classic heaters used for these purposes are mineral wool and expanded polystyrene boards. Polyfoam compares favorably with a mineral slab in that it does not shrink over time. We will insulate the sash with foam plastic 40 mm thick and 20 density. First, insert the foam plastic without fastening into the sash in order to cut off all the necessary cuts to size. Styrofoam sheets are glued to the profile sheet from the inside between the side members on "liquid nails". Next, we fasten the inner plane of the sash with a sheet of galvanized sheet metal with self-tapping screws and a drill.

Exploitation

For the convenience of using the garage door, an electric drive with a control unit can be installed to the existing opening system, which is operated by commands from the remote control. When purchasing a drive, make sure that it matches your type of gate.

In winter, rubber seals must be periodically lubricated with silicone grease to avoid freezing of the sash and damage to the seal when opening the gate. Also, periodically pay attention to the lubrication of the linkage system and the support rollers.

The lifting garage door system is simple to implement on its own, so almost any car owner with the skills of welding and working with metal is able to do this, the main thing is to be more careful with the installation of such critical elements as guides. From the beginning of work to the complete installation of the gate, you can manage it in 2 days if you call your friends or acquaintances as an assistant.

Of course, it is better to entrust the construction of a garage to professionals, but if the car owner “grows hands from where it is necessary”, then he can perform some types of work himself. The cost of the constructed object will be much lower.

One of the most expensive stages in the construction of a garage is the manufacture of garage doors. Let's consider this process in more detail.

There are several types of garage doors on the modern market. Let's consider the features of each of them.

  1. SWING GATES - a budget option, they require space in front of the garage and cleaning the entrance area.
  2. SLIDING GATES - average price, simple mechanism, wide garage walls are needed.
  3. LIFT AND ROTARY GATES - high price, easy to operate, but require space in front of the garage.
  4. LIFTING SECTIONAL DOORS - high price, convenience, reliable design, require little space for the mechanism in the garage.

Swing gates from the listed options are simpler in design, and it is their car owner who decides to make them on his own.

Gate size

The dimensions of a garage door depend not only on the size of the garage, but also on the size of the owner's vehicle. On either side, the distance between the car and the gate frame must be at least 30 cm.

Materials and tools

To work you will need:

  1. Channel (20 cm) or metal corner (10x10 cm) - for making a frame (box).
  2. Metal profile (6x4 cm) or metal corner (5x5 cm) - for the construction of a frame (gate leaves).
  3. Sheet metal (0.1-0.3 cm) - for applying it to the supporting frame.
  4. Sheds (hinges), pieces of reinforcement, constipation.
  5. Welding machine.
  6. Bulgarian (angle grinder).
  7. Measuring instruments (level, ruler, tape measure).
  8. Standard locksmith tools.

Making a box

In the manufacture of a box for swing gates for a garage, two options for its construction are used. You can build a box as a single box structure with a supporting frame, and then install this structure in the opening. In this case, the channel or corner is taken with increased strength.

In the second case, the corners for the door frame are mounted at the end of the opening from the outside and inside at the stage of garage construction. In this case, less powerful corners can be used.

Let's consider the first option:

  1. With the help of a grinder, we cut off the parts of the required length based on the measurements taken.
  2. On the horizontal plane, the workpieces are stacked in a rectangle. For precise fixation of right angles, a level, rectangle is used. The identity of the diagonals is also compared.
  3. With a welding machine, weld the joints between the workpieces, and for greater reliability, you can temporarily fix the inner corners with jumpers, which are subsequently removed.

Manufacturing of the supporting frame

Similarly to the manufacturing technology of the box, a crate is constructed - a frame, to which sheet metal will then be welded. Two identical leaves are made from a metal profile (6x4 cm) or a corner (5x5 cm), which fit inside the manufactured gate frame. The gap between the left frame and the right frame is maintained at least 2 cm, and between the box and the frame at least 1 cm.

Covering the frame with sheet metal

  1. Cut the sheet metal according to the dimensions of the frame, while taking into account that the right canvas should overlap with the left one by 1-2 cm.
  2. Place the sheets on the frame and tack with spot welding. After fitting, making sure that the gate leaves are made correctly, make the final welding.
  3. For greater strength, additional reinforcement from a profile or corner is welded in the center of the gate leaves.

Installation of sashes using awnings

At the final stage of manufacturing, awnings are installed on the garage doors in the following sequence:

  1. At a distance of 20-25 cm from the upper and lower end of the box, awnings are laid.
  2. The upper parts of the canopies are welded to the shutters with a welding machine, and the lower parts are welded to the box.
  3. To increase the strength of the connection of the awnings with the structure, additional strips of metal 0.5-0.7 cm thick are welded to the upper and lower parts of the awnings.

So, the garage door is finished. We check the operation of the doors - they should open and close freely. After that, install the gate in the garage opening.
