Church of the Nativity in Zaozerye

temple Christmas Zaozerye lake

Nikolay Kruzhkov

Have you ever found yourself in some beautiful place and felt extraordinary peace in your soul? Sometimes in the beauty of the earth you can find “a better world, a spiritual world.” That is why places marked with special grace were chosen for the construction of churches and monasteries in Rus'.

Not far from Pavlovsky Posad, in one of the most beautiful places in the Moscow region, on the shore of a large lake stands the Church of the Nativity of Christ. In summer, behind peasant huts, surrounded by tall trees, this church is almost invisible from the road. But if not she herself, then the unusually quiet and clean lake will attract attention. Moreover, the original Russian name of the village is Zaozerye, mysterious and promising. Remember: “Beyond the mountains, beyond the valleys, beyond the dense forests...”. Behind the lake. And if you believe this beauty and promise of joy, the path above the shore will lead you to a through lattice gate. Here, behind the bright lake, behind the white fence, among the tall old linden and elm trees, the temple is the focus and image of all our earthly aspirations.

In the 13th century. After the death of Prince Alexander Nevsky, his youngest son Daniil inherited an appanage principality with the then insignificant city of Moscow. It included the village of Vokhna (now the city of Pavlovsky Posad) with surrounding lands. Tradition connects the name of Prince Daniil Alexandrovich with the founding of a temple on the lake. On the high bank of the Klyazma River, on the very border of the Vladimir and Moscow principalities, a large courtyard was set up, where there was a small detachment of princely warriors. Once Daniil Alexandrovich happened to get lost in the local dense forests. Having lost hope of finding the way, the prince turned to the Lord in prayer, asking for help. He also prayed to the saint of that day - Tikhon of Amafunt, on whose memorial day this misfortune happened to him. The prince promised to build a temple in the place where he was lucky enough to emerge from the forest. The prince found himself not on the shore of a bright lake.

The church built here according to his vow was dedicated to St. Tikhon. The lake on which it stands is called Danilishchevo, and now in the church during the service they always sing the troparion to the blessed Prince Daniel of Moscow. The truth of the legend is supported by the fact that it refers not to a hero glorified in history, but to a quiet and meek, God-fearing prince. His name, standing between the names of his father, the hero of the Battle of the Ice, and his son, the collector of the Russian Land, Ivan Kalita, remained in the shadows.

Soon after the restoration of the St. Daniel Monastery in Moscow, the monks of this monastery visited the local temple. And now, on the day of St. Tikhon (the patronal feasts of the Nativity of Christ and Tikhon’s Day), the “Danilovskys” come from Moscow. Local parishioners are not surprised - “Of course, they are our own.”

Ivan the Terrible once recorded these lands behind the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. And for two centuries the local peasants were considered patrimonial owners of the monastery. Orthodox monasteries provided the best examples of theological culture and applied art, and disseminated advanced ideas in architecture and urban planning, painting and music, breeding and arable farming. the labor of the monastic peasants was orderly and productive. Communication with the monks of the famous monastery affected their moral character.

The memory of those years lives in places of veneration of Sergius of Radonezh. Many of the churches in the local area have a chapel consecrated in the name of St. Sergius. His Image is on the northern wall in the Nikolsky chapel. Sergius is the family name of many local families, although most residents find it difficult to answer the question of why there are so many Sergeevs and Sergeeviches among their relatives.

In the description of the Pavlovo-Posad lands published at the beginning of the century, Tikhon's Day is described as the main holiday of the village of Zaozerye. Old-timers remember how, on the eve of the celebration, pilgrims flocked to Zaozerye. They walked and rode horses. After the all-night vigil, they settled down to spend the night behind the church fence or by the lake. Tikhonov Day (June 16/29) falls on the hottest time of summer. Attracted by the large crowd, traders organized entire fairs in the village. In the morning the church could not accommodate all the worshipers.

After the early liturgy, a prayer service is usually served in the church courtyard and the water is blessed. A special place has been set up for this - Jordan. Huge vats of water are placed here. And from morning until late evening people go and go for the blessed healing water. Parishioners talk about many healings from various ailments after swimming in the lake on Tikhonov Day. Healing water strengthens your strength and gives you health for the whole year. The lake is crowded from early morning. The saint gathered everyone. Such popular love is not accidental. Almost every family can tell you about some “home miracle” associated with St. Tikhon. And when his name is mentioned in prayer or in a story, it is pronounced as if the saint of God is nearby.

Pilgrims from other Russian cities have been coming here for many years. They fill a bottle with water from the lake, reverently drink a few sips, and take the rest with them. As a shrine, as a healing remedy, it is given to the mourning and sick.

Tikhon of Amafunt lived in the 5th century. in Cyprus, but we know almost nothing about it. And suddenly - a miracle of presence. The saint of God is nearby. He prays for us, takes care of us, helps. Twelve settlements: Kuznetsy, Zaozerye, Andronovo, Vostrikovo, Bolshoi Dvor, Gavrino, Gribanovo, Borisovo, Mikhalevo, Bunkovo, Tarasovo, Nosyrevo make up the parish of the Church of the Nativity. The life of the temple and the lives of the people who come to it are inextricably linked.

The local lake has one amazing property, known to all local residents. It always has the same water level. Not lower, not higher. Even the spring flood after a snowy winter does not cover the low bridges on the water. And when water was continuously pumped from the lake in the hot summer of 1972 to extinguish forest fires, its level remained the same. Although there was an unprecedented drought.

In the 1930s The Church of the Nativity of Christ in Zaozerye was closed. Local parishioners heard that a priest was shot in the churchyard of the neighboring Bogorodsky Church. Eyewitnesses said that when the bell was thrown from the bell tower of the St. Nicholas Church in the village of Vasyutino, a woman screamed desperately in the crowd. And she, a mother of five children, was arrested and taken away that same day. Forever. In Zaozerye, religious services also stopped. For several months, volunteers guarded church property. They hid sacred vessels and utensils in a cache. Atheists were not allowed near the temple. Powerless and defenseless, they survived and won. Then they said: “St. Tikhon helped.”

An Orthodox person cannot be indifferent to the fate of the Fatherland. A wonderful icon of the holy righteous prince Alexander Nevsky in a black and gilded icon case, commissioned and financed by local residents, became a monument to the patriotism of the parishioners of the Church of the Nativity of Christ. Not far from Zaozerye, in the village of Bunkovo, in a small wooden hut lived the Izvekov family, parishioners of the Church of the Nativity. Seryozha Izvekov, the future Patriarch of All Rus' Pimen, went to church for service with his mother and sisters. The house in which he lived could recently be seen while driving along Gorkovskoe Highway. He remembered the church in which he prayed as a child throughout his life and into the 1970s. appointed his closest friend Archpriest Viktor Shipovalnikov as rector of the temple in Zaozerye to serve in his homeland.

The Church of the Nativity of Christ is proud not only of its heavenly patrons, glorious history and famous parishioners. Its clergy deserve special attention. Behind the Tikhonovsky altar, near the wall, priest Viktor Galakhov, who was the rector here for many years, is buried. Old-timers remember this wonderful man. During the Great Patriotic War he was seriously wounded. Legends can be made about the courage of Father Victor. Indeed, during the years of his ministry, the priest was required to have such qualities as courage, perseverance, and fearlessness.

During his ministry, the number of parishioners increased, and for many of them he became a spiritual father. Many local residents remember his wonderful sermons. His authority in the area is enormous. Many government officials, who due to their position did not have the right to openly communicate with clergy, sought meetings with him. They asked him to secretly, without witnesses, baptize, unction, marry, give communion, and perform a funeral service. Believers from neighboring towns and villages came to the church.

People's love singled out Protodeacon Nikolai Zaitsev from the clergy of the Nativity Church, who also served here after the war. Father Nikolai also went through the fiery miles of the Great Patriotic War and was seriously wounded, which subsequently caused his untimely death. Parishioners talk about his extraordinary tact, high culture, and wonderful voice. After all, the splendor of the Orthodox service depends on the diaconal service, which affects the prayerful mood of the parishioners. People came from afar to attend the service with the participation of Father Nikolai.

In 1976, Archpriest Viktor Shipovalnikov, whom we have already mentioned, a man of interesting destiny, became the rector of the church in the village of Zaozerye. It is his name that Alexander Solzhenitsyn mentions in his autobiographical story “A Calf Butted an Oak Tree.”

The entire history of the Russian Orthodox Church during the Soviet period passed before his eyes. Fr. was born. Victor in 1915 in Arkhangelsk. From the age of seven he became a sexton and served at the altar of the parish church. It was then that the idea of becoming a priest came to him. In 1943, Viktor Shipovalnikov was ordained to the priesthood and was soon arrested and convicted as a “socially harmful element,” as they said then. However, during the war, the policy towards the Church changed, and the clergy began to be released from prison and returned from exile. They were released from the Pechersk camps and Fr. Victor. More than half a century of priestly service! And all these years Fr. Victor worked to restore the temples.

Wherever Viktor Shipovalnikov served, he did everything possible to show people the culture, power, beauty and living joy of the liturgies. He himself always wore clerical dress, organized processions of the cross, resumed the ringing of bells, and attracted parishioners by reading akathists. In each church he created a magnificent choir with a wonderful repertoire. In this he was always helped by his mother regent, who had a keen sense and understanding of church singing. The Shipovalnikov family collected a large library of spiritual chants. Father Victor tried to give people the opportunity to feel and understand the special beauty of the Divine Liturgy. “I have always thought that the service should be organized in such a way that people who, perhaps, do not go to church so often, leave it with a special feeling of spiritual cleansing and joy,” he admitted, believing that the best sermon Orthodoxy - church service. In Zaozerye, like a precious heritage, they carefully preserve the traditions that were here during his time.

The modern building of the Church of the Nativity of Christ was built in 1809 on the initiative of the local landowner Gavriil Vasilyevich Ryumin. A record dating back to 1809 has been preserved: “In place of the wooden one, a stone church is being built with two chapels - St. Tikhon of Amathunta and St. Nicholas of Myra. In 1854, the son of Gavriil Vasilyevich, Nikolai Gavrilovich Ryumin, together with the estate manager, merchant Platon Mikhailov, and parishioners, expanded the refectory and added these chapels.”

The church was built in the spirit of classicism, characteristic of the early 19th century. The central iconostasis is made in the same style. The iconostases of the chapels, built in the 1890s, are decorated in the spirit of eclecticism. The painting of the walls and ceilings was done at the end of the 19th century. artist Afanasyev. This is a typical example of church painting in the late academic spirit. The interior icons are not particularly ancient; they, like the wall paintings, were made at the end of the 19th century. By the way, some of them were written at the expense of parishioners.

Now the rector of the temple is Archpriest Fr. Sergius Nikolaev, who is known in the Moscow region as a church writer, the author of the books “For Advice to the Father” and “For Consolation to the Father,” does a lot for the spiritual enlightenment of the people of Pavlovo Posad. He often gives talks and lectures on religious topics in the city Exhibition Hall of Pavlovsky Posad. The famous film actress Natalya Varley, who writes poetry on spiritual topics, became a welcome guest in the temple. Father Sergius and the religious community of the Church of the Nativity in Zaozerye worthily continue the work of Fr. Viktor Shipovalnikov.

For seven centuries, the Divine Liturgy has been celebrated in a church by a quiet lake. For seven centuries on a festive morning the church bell has been calling its parishioners to the temple. Many families associate christenings, weddings, and funeral services with him. And especially memorable in every family is the Nativity of Christ and Tikhon's Day. After all, through the Church we can become close and dear to each other.

In the work on the essay, materials from Fr. Sergius (Nikolaev) - a famous church writer, rector of the Church of the Nativity of Christ in Zaozerye.

The construction of the first church on this site is associated with the name of the holy noble prince Daniel of Moscow, who supposedly visited his border outpost. One day, while hunting, he got lost and began to pray to the saint of the day, promising to build a temple in the place where he would come out to people. This happened on the day of St. Tikhon of Amafunt. The prince came out of the forest to the shore of a familiar lake and later built a temple here in the name of the saint, according to a vow. The lake on which the temple stands is called Danilova.
A stone church in honor of the Nativity of Christ in the village of Zaozerye was built in 1809 instead of a wooden one, thanks to the diligence of the local landowner Gavriil Vasilyevich Ryumin. In the church, chapels were built in the warm refectory: in the name of St. Tikhon of Amafunt and St. Nicholas of Myra.
The tall, elegant structure of the temple in the classicist style, after the Moscow fire of 1812, could not accommodate the increased population of the Moscow region and nearby provinces. In January 1854, priest Andrei Rumyantsev, the clergy and parishioners, sent a most humble request “to distribute the meal.”
The main funds for the reconstruction of the church were donated by the actual state councilor, chamberlain Nikolai Gavrilovich Ryumin. The manager of his estate, the merchant of the third guild Platon Mikhailov, donated forty thousand bricks and timber for this building.
The central iconostasis was made in 1809 in the same style as the church. The iconostases of the chapels were made in the 1890s. in the spirit of eclecticism. At the same time, the artist Afanasyev painted the walls and ceilings in a late academic manner. The installation of gilded iconostasis of the chapels, as well as the painting of walls and ceiling lamps, was carried out mainly at the expense of the church warden S.I. Baranov and his son-in-law, the Moscow merchant F.E. Baranov.
In Soviet times, they tried to transfer the temple for economic needs to the local council, but the parishioners did not allow this.
Among the especially revered icons, one can note the full-length image of St. Sergius of Radonezh on gilded carved gesso, located in the St. Nicholas chapel. Particularly beloved is the image of St. Seraphim of Sarov with part of the stone on which the monk prayed and part of his mantle.
The icon of the holy noble prince Alexander Nevsky is venerated in a beautiful black and gold icon case, commissioned and financed by parishioners in memory of the murdered Emperor Alexander II. A beautiful three-light hanging lamp made of gilded carved copper, decorated with the royal coat of arms, has the inscription on the lace wings: “In memory of the birth of the Heir Tsarevich Alexei. July 30, 1904" is also a gift from the parishioners.
In April 1913, a society of banner bearers was opened at the church.
Today, the maintenance of the temple is carried out with the help of donors, as in the past. Several years ago, nine bells were donated to the temple. In 2001, benefactors purchased a 1000 kg bell, thanks to which the belfry acquired a remarkably beautiful sound.
The most crowded holiday of the parish is “Tikhon’s Day,” the day of remembrance of St. Tikhon of Amafunt. This is not only a temple holiday, but a holiday for the entire region. Previously, due to the crowds, fairs were held in Zaozerye on holidays.
There is a Sunday school at the temple.

The rector of the temple is Archpriest Sergei Nikolaev.

The true beacon of Orthodoxy for the Russian North was St. Alexander Svirsky. Like rivers originating from lakes, his disciples are St. Adrian Ondrusovsky, Gennady and Nikifor Vazheozersky, Jonah Yashezersky, having absorbed the wisdom of their mentor, carried the word of God to the harsh Karelian lands. Elder Cassian, who founded a hermitage on the shores of the Gulf of Salma, also became such a fertile source. And for more than four hundred years the name of Christ has been glorified here.

Fulfillment of the father's covenant

In the 18th century the desert was abolished. In its place a parish arose with two churches - Peter and Paul (1775) and Sretenskaya (1780), built at the expense of the Olonets merchant Ilya Kononov. The construction of the Sretensky Church became for him the fulfillment of the will of his father, Yakov Kononov. After the revolution, Solomensky churches were repeatedly closed, the domes were removed. A dormitory was set up in the Sretenskaya Church, then a school. Petropavlovskaya still houses a kindergarten.

Only in 1996, the Sretensky Church, which by that time had been converted into a nondescript two-story building, was returned to the Orthodox Church. The restoration of the temple was led by Archpriest Pavel Lekhmus, now a cleric of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

A new stage in the history of Orthodoxy in Solomenny began on June 27, 2003, on the day of the consecration of the restored church. The church has returned to its former grandeur; it is famous for its amazing carved three-tiered iconostasis created by Palekh craftsmen.

The temple continues to be decorated with icons. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, during his Christmas visit to Petrozavodsk in 2009, presented the Sretensky Church with an ancient Kazan icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Soon after Easter, the temple will acquire another shrine - the image of St. bglv. knn. Peter and Fevronia Muromsky, the only one in Petrozavodsk. It is being painted in the icon-painting workshop of Natalia Smirnova. In April, after Bright Week, a road trip of the Cross will be organized, which will deliver the image to the city of Murom for its consecration and the discovery of pieces of the relics of the holy noble princes. Returning, the course will make stops in Orthodox parishes in Karelia.

New traditions

On Saturdays, classes are held at the parish Sunday School. It is located in a small room allocated by the Board of Trustees of the microdistrict, of which the new rector of the temple is a member, Head of the Diocesan Department for Interaction with the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies Archpriest Leonid Leontyuk. Classes are taught by parishioners who have a pedagogical education and have attended the course “Fundamentals of Orthodoxy” at the Spiritual and Educational Orthodox Center in the name of St. Alexander Svirsky.

“In our parish, the parishioners themselves bear a lot of obedience,” notes Fr. Leonid. – It’s usually like this: people expect the priest to solve all their problems. We are trying to move away from this tradition. Each is given obedience according to his strengths and skills. Some work in a correspondence group with convicts, some write memos for new believers, some hold competitions in applied arts and drawings for the patronal feast day. I come to holiday meals as an honored guest. This does not mean that I have moved away from management, I am just waiting for the support of good initiative assistants.

The main support about. Leonida is the second serving priest of the temple, Archpriest Valery Dmitriev, reserve colonel. The parishioners love Father very much, because he can give advice, relying both on patristic instructions and on his extensive life experience. And with the students of special school No. 8 in Sulazhgora, whom he spiritually nourishes, Fr. Valery communicates in a fatherly way.

Helping your neighbor

The parish pays great attention to social service. “It’s no secret that the standard of living in Solomennoye is very low,” says Fr. Leonid. – The plant where local residents worked has been reorganized. People have lost their jobs, many have started drinking, children are suffering... In order to somehow broaden their horizons, we organize educational trips around Karelia. In the nearby village. In Zaozerie the situation is even more depressing. People are morally decaying. This year we congratulated disadvantaged families. Very painful experience. The parents were drunk, one child ran out wearing only a shirt and eagerly looked at the gift..."

There is a tuberculosis hospital in Solomennoye; the parish regularly donates urgently needed diapers and warm clothes to its patients. For two years now, poor pensioners have been receiving food and warm clothing. There is a correspondence group with convicts, and the responsibilities of its participants are strictly distributed. Thanks to the help of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Kazakhstan on church holidays, residents of the village of Sretensky Church. Zaozerye is delivered free of charge on specially designated buses.

Bridge Defender

As already mentioned, the temple was built on the shore of the Petrozavodsk Bay of Lake Onega, through which ships pass. There is a pontoon bridge in front of the church, which causes residents a lot of problems - only one-way traffic is allowed on it, and in the summer the ferry runs several times a day.

“One married couple decided to get married in the year of their thirtieth anniversary,” says Fr. Leonid. “They approached the matter responsibly and arrived long before the appointed time. And in front of me the bridge, without any warning... was opened. And people waited for the priest for two hours! Another incident happened: this time I was in the temple, and before the wedding party the bridge was unexpectedly opened. Then the young people persuaded local fishermen to cross by boat. Of course, there are many inconveniences. But everything that is created has meaning. Maybe the ferry is our protection. After all, not a single enterprise has been built on our shore, and therefore the air here is clean.

Parishioners of Russian churches located near lakes or rivers are gradually reviving the tradition of Epiphany bathing. Sretenskaya Church was no exception. For the third year now, on the feast of the Epiphany, after the Divine Liturgy, parishioners and guests from Petrozavodsk plunge into the Jordan, carved into the ice of the bay next to the temple. The day before, warm tents for changing clothes are set up, the bottom is checked for safety reasons, and on January 19, Emergencies Ministry employees are on duty at the ice hole.

Then they said: “ Saint Tikhon helped».

Seryozha Izvekov, the future His Holiness Patriarch of All Rus' Pimen, went to church for service with his mother and sisters.

" I have always thought that it is necessary to organize the service in such a way that people who, perhaps, do not go to church so often, leave it with a special feeling of spiritual cleansing and joy“, he admitted, believing that the best sermon of Orthodoxy is a church service. In Zaozerye, like a precious heritage, they carefully preserve the traditions that were here during his time.

The modern building of the Church of the Nativity of Christ was built in 1809 on the initiative of the local landowner Gavriil Vasilyevich Ryumin. A record dating back to 1809 has been preserved: “ In place of the wooden one, a stone church is being built with two chapels - St. Tikhon of Amafunt and St. Nicholas of Myra. In 1854, the son of Gabriel Vasilyevich, Nikolai Gavrilovich Ryumin, together with the estate manager, merchant Platon Mikhailov, and parishioners, expanded the refectory and added these chapels».

In the work on the essay, materials from Father Sergius (Nikolaev), the rector of the Church of the Nativity of Christ in Zaozerye, were used.

Church of the Nativity, village. Zaozerye, Russian Orthodox Church, Moscow diocese (regional), Pavlovo-Posad deanery.
Patronal feast: Nativity of Christ (January 7)
Rector: Archpriest Sergiy Valentinovich Nikolaev, 1952
Address: Moscow region, Pavlovo-Posadsky district, village. Zaozerye.
The construction of the first church on this site is associated with the name of Blgv. book Daniil of Moscow, who, while hunting in these forests, got lost. This happened on the day of remembrance of St. Tikhon of Amafuntsky. The prince began to pray to this saint, vowing to build a temple in honor of his name. Soon he came out of the forest to the shore of a lake that was already familiar to him, and later fulfilled his promise: he built a temple on the shore of the lake in the name of St. Tikhon of Amafuntsky. The lake has since been called Danilov.
In 1809, instead of a wooden church, through the diligence of the local landowner Gavriil Vasilyevich Ryumin, a stone church with two chapels in a warm refectory was built in Zaozerye: in the name of St. Tikhon of Amathunta and St. Nicholas. In 1854, at the request of priest Andrei Rumyantsev, the temple was rebuilt in order to expand the refectory part. The main funds for the reconstruction of the church were donated by the actual state councilor, chamberlain Nikolai Gavrilovich Ryumin.
The tall, elegant structure of the temple in the classicist style had three iconostases inside: the central one - in honor of the Nativity of Christ, made in the classicist style in 1809; in the aisles - erected in the 1890s, in the spirit of eclecticism. At the same time, the artist Afanasyev painted the walls and vaults of the temple in a late academic manner. The artistic decoration of the temple and the production of gilded iconostases were carried out at the expense of the church warden S.I. Baranov and his son-in-law, the Moscow merchant F.E. Baranov. In 1913, a society of banner bearers was opened at the temple.
During Soviet times, the temple was not closed. In recent years, with the financial support of benefactors, ten bells have been purchased for the church belfry, including the largest one weighing 1000 kg. Until now, the most beloved and crowded holidays of parishioners in the surrounding districts are not only the temple day - the Nativity of Christ, but also the day of remembrance of St. Tikhon of Amafuntsky. There is a Sunday school at the church.
Shrines. Among the especially revered icons is the image of St. Sergius of Radonezh, in full height, on gilded carved gesso, located in the Nikolsky chapel. The following images are also especially loved: St. Seraphim of Sarov with part of the stone on which the saint prayed and a piece of his mantle; icon of St. blgv. book Alexander Nevsky in a black and gold icon case, written in memory of the murdered Emperor Alexander II. Also sacred is a three-light hanging lamp made of gilded carved copper, decorated with the royal coat of arms, with the inscription: “In memory of the birth of the Heir Tsarevich Alexei. July 30, 1904" - a gift from parishioners.
