Installation instructions for the inner framing of velux windows. Installation of roof windows Velux

Dormer window systems have many features due to their purpose and location. Their installation requires precision and accuracy, but it is not as difficult as it might seem, especially if you purchase products from well-known brands.

For example, Velux roof windows. They are characterized by excellent quality and reliability. The manufacturer accompanies each kit with detailed instructions that allow you to assemble them yourself and get a good result.

Dimensions (edit)

Velux roof windows are offered in a wide range of designs and sizes. In the company's catalog you can find systems with opening along the central axis, with combined opening, window-hatches, balconies and much more. The choice depends on both the type of roofing and roofing material and the intended use.

The dimensions of the Velux roof windows range from 55 × 78 cm to 114 × 140 cm, in total there are 9 options. The size is determined by several parameters:

  • The width should be 4–6 cm less than the distance between the rafters. It can be seen in the project at home and, if desired, further adjusted. If you want the opening to be smaller, additional wooden elements can be supplied: they will narrow the distance between the rafters or, conversely, use the space between the three rafter legs.
  • The length depends on the amount of light you want to receive and the slope of the roof. The standard rule is: the smaller the slope, the longer the opening. The windows are placed at a height of 90 cm from the floor, while the upper edge should be at a height of 200 cm from the floor. It is not difficult to calculate how the length will change with a change in slope.

A sturdy, sturdy and durable construction with special fittings is sure to make the space bright and comfortable. Let us consider in detail the installation of Velux roof windows in general terms: for each specific model there are nuances, which are described in detail in the instructions attached to the kits.

General characteristics and features

The company's structures can be located in unheated and heated rooms, the slope of the roof slope is from 15 to 90 degrees. They allow access to the roof, for this the lower part of the frame can become a convenient step with a grooved surface to prevent slipping. The frame is covered with polyurethane, tempered glass of special strength.

Windows are made of wood, so they are not only reliable, but also as environmentally friendly as possible. On the side there is a handle for opening. The sash rotates 90 degrees and locks in one of three positions.

Installation of Velux roof windows will not require much time, you can handle it yourself, without the involvement of specialists. To protect the attic from leaks, it is recommended to install a Velux BDX waterproofing kit, it must be tightly connected to the window. If it is located in a living space, then you should purchase a triplex - glass equipped with a protective laminated film. It will allow you to avoid falling fragments down, even if the glass breaks for some reason.

Installation instructions

The system is supplied to the buyer in a complete set: it includes a flashing, slopes, heat and waterproofing, as well as detailed instructions for installing a Velux roof window. It will allow you to visualize the step-by-step process of attaching the box to the roof. The work involves the following stages:

The presence of waterproofing, if the work is carried out correctly, allows you to make the attic space completely isolated from street moisture: the inclined frame will be completely sealed.

After the above works, the roof covering is restored around the window block, and it acquires an aesthetic appearance. The salary hides the fasteners, they will be invisible from the outside. The finished structure looks beautiful and neat, and the installation itself according to the instructions takes a little time.

Advantages

The manufacturing company has existed since 1941, and during this long period it has become one of the world leaders in the production of window structures of various types. The products were tested in Russian conditions: products of this brand were tested at temperatures below -50 degrees, after which they were officially recognized as frost-resistant.

One of the advantages of this company is a wide range of products. She offers the following classes of attic windows:

  • GZL "Economy" - basic version with an opening system along the central axis. Made of dense laminated wood, varnished. It has a special washing filter and provides comfortable ventilation.
  • GGL "Classic" is the most common variant, which can be additionally equipped with an electric drive. This window also opens on a central axis and is equipped with a cleaning filter. The frame is protected by a three-layer varnish coating, so it can serve for a very long time.
  • GGL Integra is a smart window. It is equipped with an electric drive, you can additionally mount a rain sensor and blinds on it.
  • GGU "Moisture-resistant window" is a block of increased protection against moisture penetration, the frame is treated with white polyurethane. For ventilation, a valve-window system was used, an additional washing filter was installed.

DIY installation of Velux roof windows

The shingles were completed three weeks ago. Unfortunately, I'm a little bit]]> they got me through with windows. It so happened that the windows I ordered are no longer produced. Velux has started production of a new series of windows. The supplier informed me that the new windows will be lighter by reducing the size of the frame and increasing the size of the glass. For this pleasure I had to pay 90 euros for all three windows. The roof windows were delivered last week, but my roofer has been stitched up recently due to a large number of orders, so the windows had to stand for a week. The roof windows will be located in non-residential rooms, so I decided to order the cheapest roof windows. I ordered three roof windows with top opening along the central axis (two windows 134 x 140 cm, one window 94 x 140 cm). The choice fell on plastic roof windows.

]]>

I did not order Velux branded material for heat and vapor control under the slopes of roof windows. The roofer brought his own vapor barrier film for the roof windows. In addition, it was already included in the installation price of roof windows.
]]> ]]>

The installation of the roof windows took almost a whole day. In the afternoon, the rays of the setting sun penetrated into the bathroom of our eldest daughter. Now we are thinking about which curtains to choose for roof windows. Velux offers blackout and roller blinds. In the boiler room, anyway, you will need to buy a blackout curtain so that the heating boiler does not heat up. But on the staircase and in the bathroom, you can install roller blinds to gently diffuse daylight.
]]> ]]>

I chose the frames for the skylights from aluminum. We covered the roof with Nelskamp S-Pfanne Longlife cement-sand tiles in anthracite color, so the skylights for the skylights were also ordered in a dark color.

Installation instructions for Velux roof windows

]]> ]]>

The lower edge of the window must be positioned in relation to the transverse beams (if any) and the batten rail in such a way as to produce the inner lining under the window vertically, and the outer one horizontally.
]]> ]]>

The window opening in the roof should be 50mm larger than the window frame in height and 30-40mm in width (approximately). The recommended distance between the roofing]]> material and the window frame must be strictly observed. The distance between the rafters and the window frame should not exceed 30mm on each side. To make the installation more convenient, you can install a temporary support beam under the window. Using a level, set the lower part of the window horizontally, then fix both lower corners with screws. Then each top corner is secured with a screw in the middle of the oblong hole. You should not tighten the screw all the way, you need to leave the possibility of adjustment.
]]>

To prevent drafts and moisture from entering the room, you must strictly follow the instructions. It is necessary to adjust the gap between the box and the frame. It should be the same along the entire length of the sides. These actions must be performed immediately, since it will not be possible to carry out the adjustment later.

]]> ]]>

Performing the second adjustment.

It is necessary that the frame closes evenly across the entire width. For this, the gap between the window frame and the lower parts of the frame must be the same. To level the gap, place the supplied plastic wedge on the side where the gap was selected earlier, under the top corner.
]]> ]]>

Insulating roofing material (glassine) must completely bend around the window frame around the perimeter, reaching its upper edge. The insulating roofing material should be slightly raised at the notch points when fixed at the corners of the window frame. The sheets of insulating material adjacent to the window should overlap each other by 200 mm or more to ensure sufficient wind insulation and water protection. If waterproofing is not provided for in the roof structure, then its installation around the window is required.

]]> ]]>

]]> ]]>

]]> ]]>

In the cardboard packaging of the flashing you will find a description of its installation and all the necessary details. You should not use the description in the package, it is much better to install the flashing by following these instructions.

Above are instructions for installing a roof window. Observe the distance between the roofing material and the window frame. If a lathing is provided in the roof structure, it is necessary to install a drainage gutter.

7. Install the lower flashing (1), then the lower window trim (2). Secure them with the supplied screws by screwing them into the prepared holes. Attach the lower side flashing sections to the frame with nails (3).

]]> ]]>

8. Insert the side flashing sections (2) all the way into the lower section of the flashing. Fold the incised part (1) for greater stability. Attach the side sections to the window frame with nails, to the lathing (3) - using clamps. To ensure the correct positioning of the roofing material, it is sometimes necessary to slightly crush the edge of the side flashing sections (4).

]]> ]]>

9. In the prepared holes, fix the side (1) and top (2) trims with the supplied screws. The roofing material must be brought close to the fold on the flashing (3). For fixing the roofing material when laying it on the flashing, it is allowed to use only materials made on a bitumen basis. Silicone based materials are not permitted.
]]> ]]>

10. Install the upper section of the flashing, fix it with clamps on the lathing and screws on the window frame.

Roofing material above the window, if necessary, can be cut at a distance of 60-100mm from the upper edge of the window frame.

If you removed the frame, reinstall it. There is a locking button on the pivot hinge of the frame, which automatically locks into place when the window is closed.

Attention!

Each purchased window or flashing is supplied with detailed instructions for its installation. Here is a general (schematic) instruction.

In a private house, the attic is another room. To turn the attic space into a full-fledged residential one, it is necessary to install windows. It is better to do this immediately at the stage of roof construction.

Installing a skylight into a finished soft roof is more difficult: for installation, you will have to cut out a large section of the covering, plywood lining, roofing pie and even rafters if they are installed in small steps.

The technology of installing a dormer window into a soft roof depends primarily on the design of the windows themselves. Installation requirements vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, Velux models can only be attached to rafter legs, while FAKRO and ROTO are often attached to battens.

Consider the general installation rules.

Scheme and selection of a model for installing a dormer window into a soft roof

When choosing a model and determining the required number of windows, they proceed from the calculation of 1 square meter of translucent structure for ten squares of the attic area. It is recommended to draw up a window layout in advance.

  • for steep roofs, the window is installed so that its lower cut is located at a height of one meter to 1.4;

  • if the slope is within twenty degrees, you can place the window higher - the illumination will be better;

  • the minimum installation height is 80 centimeters, the maximum is ninety meters.

The height is also influenced by the design of the block itself. More precisely, the location of the handle:

  • if the handle is on top, the window is placed no more than 1.1 m from the floor;
  • if in the middle - 1.2-1.4 meters;
  • when the handle is down, if there are children in the house, do not put the window low. Not less than 1.3 meters.

The window is installed between the rafter legs. The width of the model is selected so that about two centimeters remain between the frame and the rafters on both sides. Insulation will be located along the perimeter of the frame, the width of the gaps between the box and the rafters depends on its thickness.

Installation procedure

1. If the roof is already ready, you need to cut an opening for the window frame in it. The opening is made along the cut of the rafters: the same gap is left between the edge and the box as between the box and the rafter. This is how all materials are cut off, with the exception of the waterproofing layer: you need to leave an extra 20-25 centimeters of film for overlap.

2. If the inside of the ceiling is sheathed with plasterboard or clapboard, it will be difficult to determine the location of the opening. It is recommended to have a rafter layout on hand, otherwise you will have to dismantle some of the panels. Before cutting the entire opening in drywall along the contour, several through holes should be made to relieve stress.

3. Above and below the opening, transverse bars are nailed to the rafter legs. Their installation is mandatory if it was necessary to remove a section of the rafter to install the window. If not, it is still recommended to nail the bars: this way the window will hold on tightly.

4. On top of the finished opening, under a slight slope, place a drainage pipe / trough to drain the condensate, attach it to the crate. The length of the gutter is equal to the width of the opening. The slope is necessary so that the water does not stagnate, but spontaneously flows into the roof ventilation gap.

5. Remove the sash from the window. If the window is deaf, take out the glass unit.

6. Fasten the box to the rafters and transverse bars with angle brackets. One shelf is screwed to the wooden element with self-tapping screws, the other to the window frame. The lower edge is fastened tightly, the screws on the upper are not fully tightened.

7. Adjust the structure by level. Serious distortions are straightened with plastic corners. It is recommended to put the sash back in place to make sure it fits properly. After adjustment, the sash is removed again and the fasteners are tightened.

8. Lay waterproofing and insulation around the window. The edges of the waterproofing apron are wound on one side under the waterproofing layer of the roof itself, on the other - under the condensate gutter. The edges of the roof waterproofing are fixed to the frame. Fastening - galvanized nails.

9. Cover the assembly seams with flashing strips from the window kit. First, put the bottom part, then the rest. All planks must be brought under the elastic seal.

10. From the inside, the slots along the perimeter of the frame are sealed with heat-insulating or sealing material, a vapor barrier is laid and the slopes are treated. The lower slope should be horizontal and the upper slope vertical.

11. Return the sash to its place.

You can slightly change the installation sequence: first sheathe the opening with heat-insulating material, and then install the frame. Insulation strips are attached to the rafters and bars with a stapler.

Installation of roof windows on a soft roof is energy-intensive and requires high precision.

Poor installation of a sloped window on the roof will lead to the fact that the attic will be constantly flooded with rain, condensation, rain and snow moisture will begin to accumulate under the roofing. All this will accelerate the deterioration of the roof and the entire house.

Contact us at STM-Stroy: our experience in roofing is more than fifteen years, we will install roof windows for you quickly, inexpensively and in full compliance with the technology.

An exploitable attic is a great way to expand the living space of a house without taking away precious extra meters from the site. It is easier and cheaper to equip an attic than to build a second floor. It is only necessary to immediately design a sufficient ceiling height and provide for windows. Windows are the most technically challenging part of the attic: they must provide sufficient illumination, while staying firmly in place and not leaking. Consider the installation of roof windows using the example of products from the popular manufacturer Velux.

Features of Velux windows

The windows of this company are made of glued pine beams. The density of this wood is quite high, which guarantees the strength of the structure.

Installation diagram of the roof window

Windows in mansards are dormer (installed vertically) and actually attic windows - cut into the slope with the same slope as the slope itself. The difficulty is the installation of inclined windows. Vertical ones are installed in almost the same way as windows in the residential part of the house.

The first stage (preferably at the design stage, but you can also cut the window into the finished roof) is the choice of location and calculation of the glazing area.

According to existing standards, the total area of glass should be one tenth of the area of the attic itself. The best option is to install a window in the span between the rafter legs.

If you cut out the rafters, then additional reinforcement measures will be required.

Based on the size of the step of the rafters, the width of the window is determined and, therefore, the number of windows. The side strips of the frames should be located 2-3 centimeters from the rafter legs (the gap is needed for laying the insulation).

If the window does not fit into the span between the rafters, fragments of the rafter legs are cut out and the structure is reinforced with auxiliary beams. Horizontal beams are installed 30 cm from the upper and lower edges of the window, vertical beams - 5 cm from the window frame. The thickness of the beams is the same as that of the rafter.

The height of the placement depends on the slope of the roof. If the angle is large, the windows are mounted lower, on a sloping roof - closer to the ridge. The height also depends on the position of the handle on the selected model. If it is at the bottom of the frame, the window is installed 1.2-1.3 m from the floor, if at the top - 1-1.1 meters. The minimum height of the bottom plank is 80 centimeters.

Some restrictions are imposed by the coating material: in metal sheets, an opening can be cut out anywhere, and it is not recommended to cut ceramic tiles, you need to adjust the window niche for solid rows.

The size of the flashing depends on the height of the profile: the higher the ridge, the higher the flashing. For flat surfaces, Velux produces DL / EDN flashes, for profile ones - W.

The way of opening the doors (along the upper axis, along the central one) depends on the design project and the personal taste preferences of the owners.

  • on a roof with a low slope, it is better to install models with combined opening, with a turn around the upper and central axis;
  • if you plan to install furniture under the window, it is preferable to turn around the central axis;
  • if the windows are high, the way the sash is pivoted is unimportant. For such cases, the manufacturer recommends models with a remote control.

Installation instructions for Velux roof windows

If the tie-in is made into the finished roof, the first step is to prepare the opening:

1. Remove trim (if any).

1. Attach to the rafters four slats from a bar - the base to which the box will be attached. The thickness of the timber is 5 centimeters, the indent from the crate is 8-10 centimeters. Check the horizontal and vertical with a level.

2. Saw out the crate with an indent of 2 cm from the rafter legs.

3. Cut out the waterproofing section. Leave a supply of film on all four sides. Later, the excess waterproofing will need to be turned out and fixed to the crate or to the frame.

4. Cut a piece of the cover to the size of the opening.

Before cutting the waterproofing, markings are drawn on it:

  • from below for profile coatings leave 9 cm;
  • bottom for flat coverings (shingles, etc.) - 4-6;
  • from above - 9-15;
  • from the sides by 3 cm.

The rectangle is cut out at a distance of 20 cm from the marked lines.

2. From above and below, nail the waterproofing film with a stapler to the corresponding slats. Pull the vertical edges of the film outwards.

3. Remove the sash from the window, remove the flashing.

4. Fasten the brackets and mounting plates to the box. With a high window height (1.4 meters and above), additional brackets are attached in the middle of the side frame slats.

5. Install the box.

6. Fasten the bottom brackets to the battens. Install the upper ones, but do not fully tighten.

7. Install the sash. Check the fit, adjust the upper fasteners - on all sides, the gaps should be uniform. Remove the sash.

8. Place insulation in the upper gap, fix it with a stapler.

9. Place the thermal insulation on the other three strips, press down with the frame.

10. Align the box with a level, tighten the fasteners.

11. Install a waterproofing apron around the perimeter of the frame. One side of the apron is wound under the crate, the other is attached to the box with clamps from the kit. At the top, the waterproofing film is put on the drainage gutter, the apron - under the gutter. Fixation with clamps.

12. The drainage gutter itself is installed above the frame at an angle. Its purpose is to drain water from the opening to the roof.

13. Install the flashing: the lower apron, then the sides, the upper part, the last - the lining. Parts of the flashing are fixed to the crate and the box, the lower apron at the top - directly to the roof. When installing the side panels, do not confuse the right and left parts.

14. The side edges of the bottom flashing must be folded up (especially on a flat roof). This is done to prevent leaks. It is recommended to tap the lower edge with a rubber mallet to make it fit more closely to the roofing. The flashing is fixed to the roof with a sealant or wire; screws cannot be used.

15. Replace the sash.

Do not use foam to seal the joints of roof windows. The material kit contains a sealant designed for this purpose.

The final stage is the installation of slopes. The upper slope should be oriented horizontally, the lower one - vertically: with this arrangement, the flow of warm air from the heating devices will not be blocked, condensation will not appear on the windows.

If you are installing a remote controlled window, you will need to run the cable before installing the slopes. There is a special hole for it in the upper part of the box, closed with a plug. A wire with a cross section of 2 by 1.5 millimeters is passed through it (with a wiring length of no more than 40 meters).

Features of installation of the Velux roof window

Recommendations for the installation of roof windows from different manufacturers are essentially the same, but may differ in detail. The above procedure is universal. What you need to pay attention to when installing Velux roof windows:

  • the window is attached to the crate (for example, the Roto company allows windows to be fastened to the rafters);
  • it is imperative to remove the double-glazed window when installing from the attic. If from the roof, then you can not take it out.

Insulation for Velux windows is usually included in their package. This is a contour of strips of expanded polyethylene foam on a steel frame. If this element is present, the procedure is as follows:

  • first, the frame is assembled from guides with insulation;
  • install it in the prepared opening on the mounting bar;
  • install a window frame;
  • fix the heat-insulating contour together with the box to the crate with mounting plates.

If the gap between the rafters is not wide enough, the contour is adjusted to size by tearing along the groove on the sides.

note

There are some nuances in the installation of salaries on different types of roofs. On a profile roof (for example, this is a metal tile), before installing the lower strip of the W-flashing, the sharp corners of the sheets are cut off. The bar is fitted, the flexible part is bent according to the shape of the profile. The bottom is also folded over to ensure a snug fit.

On a bituminous tile roof, the lower part should overlap the roofing material with the same overlap as the tiles themselves.

Hide

Velux roof windows are supplied to the consumer together with flashing, heat and waterproofing, slopes. Along with these assembly units, an instruction is provided that explains in detail how to install a Velux roof window. It is imperative to follow the instructions in order to ensure durable and trouble-free operation of the window. The purpose of this article is to clarify the main provisions of this manual.

Installation of roof windows Velux

For correct installation of the roof window, the opening in the roof must be larger than the window dimensions by 45-50 mm in height and 30-40 mm in width.

Installation work

If you are installing a window from the inside of the attic, then it is necessary to remove the sash with a glass unit from the window frame. If installing from a rooftop, this is not necessary.

The window is supplied with special mounting plates, often also referred to as “cleats”. They are edged around the corners of the window frame and screwed in with screws. With their horizontal shelves, the plates lie on the rafters and are screwed in with screws.

Mounting plates are clearly visible

With large window dimensions (1400 mm and more), it is also equipped with central brackets for fixing to transverse beams installed at the lower and upper edges of the window frame.

The gaps between the window and the roof parts should be filled with putty only on a bitumen base: on a silicone one - not.

Velux roof window flashing - serves to connect the window to the roof. It consists of an aluminum frame, the outer profile of which consists of a system of grooves for water drainage.

There are two types:

  • EDW 1000 - for profiled roofs,
    EDS 0000 - for smooth roofs.

Thermal and waterproofing of a roof window "Velux"

Installation of waterproofing roof window Velux

The BDX 2000 accessories package is used for thermal and waterproofing of the Velux roof window. It includes:

heat-insulating sealant made of foamed polyethylene. Covers the window around the perimeter and eliminates "cold bridges".

waterproofing apron. Frames the window and connects to the roof waterproofing. It is made of folded material and therefore fits tightly to any kind of lathing.

The kit also includes a drainage gutter, which is designed to collect and drain condensate that appears in the under-roof space above the window. After its installation, the waterproofing apron is placed so that water from the drainage gutter collects in the apron and flows out of the under-roof space outward, down the roof.

The installation of the flashing begins from the bottom bar and then proceeds from the bottom up. It serves to protect and fix the waterproofing apron and the sealant. After installing the flashing, you can put the window sash in place (if it was removed).

Installation of slopes to the Velux roof window

Preparation for the installation of slopes

The third set of assembly units are slopes.

These are strips designed to frame windows from the inside - to form an expanding bell from the window to the inside of the room.

LSC slopes with a depth of 40 cm and LSD with a depth of 50 cm are used. In addition, there are slopes of the LLC, LVI series for some special types of windows - cornice, etc.

The LSC and LSD slopes are supplied with a template and a miter box.

This is how the slopes are installed

The template allows, without resorting to measurements, to determine the angle of inclination of the roof and select the correct location of the upper and lower slopes. It is believed that for better circulation of warm air, the upper slope should run parallel to the floor, the lower one - perpendicular.

The miter box helps to cut the slopes at the desired angle without measurements and marking.

In addition, the kit includes a BBX 0000 vapor barrier film, scotch tape and butyl sealant.

After the nest is insulated under the slopes, the film is applied to the insulation and glued with a sealant to the window.

Installation of slopes in the assembly

Scotch tape is used to connect the film with the vapor barrier of the roof.

All four slopes are assembled as a separate assembly unit, “snapped” onto the locks and inserted into the slot until they close with the window frame. The gap between the slopes and the wall is closed with platbands.

Above, the simplest version of the Velux roof windows installation is schematically described. There are also more complex options. For example, the combined installation of several roof windows at once: in a row or one above the other. Also - installation of "Velux" roof windows on curved roofs and similar cases.
