This article is a practical guide for calculating the details of a standard-sized wardrobe. An accessible form of presentation and advice from a designer-constructor will help to avoid common mistakes.

A sliding wardrobe of a standard size is, in principle, any wardrobe, the details of which, when cutting, are placed in a chipboard sheet. If at least one detail exceeds the overall dimensions of the slab, the furniture automatically becomes non-standard.

The wardrobe, which we began to design together with you in the first two parts of the article "Self-design of a sliding wardrobe", turned out to be quite a standard size of 1700 x 2350 x 700 mm.

Important! Three main sizes of chipboard sheet:

  • 2750 x 1830 mm;
  • 2800 x 2070 mm;
  • 2440 x 1830 mm.

Now I will outline the main stages, including those passed, in order to check if I missed anything.

Self-calculation of parts for a wardrobe:

  1. Measurements of the premises;
  2. Calculation of the overall size of the cabinet based on measurements;
  3. Planning the interior of the cabinet;
  4. Initial design creation;
  5. Improvement of the project taking into account the applied chipboard;
  6. Calculation of parts;
  7. Cut out the details on the chipboard sheet.

After analyzing the above, it is easy to understand that it is time for us to start technical improvement of the existing project. I warn you, this is the most mathematical part of the article, so I recommend equipping yourself with a calculator.

So, where to start calculating parts? Do you think I'll write about a piece of paper again now? You guessed! You already have a sliding wardrobe project, it is drawn and thought out to the smallest detail. Based on the existing sketch, we will calculate the overall dimensions of the parts. The only thing missing in the project now is the thickness of the chipboard.

Important! The standard thickness of laminated chipboard, from which the body of any furniture is made, is 16 mm or 18 mm.

At the very beginning of my career, I drew all the details not with one line, but with two, thus avoiding mistakes associated with the "loss" of material thickness. Therefore, I advise you to draw parallel second lines to all the details. So you will not forget about the volume of chipboard.

When drawing additional lines, you may not care about the aesthetics, they may visually differ in thickness and even be crooked. The main thing here is not your ability to use a ruler, but an understanding of why you are doing it.

For an example of the correct algorithm for calculating all cabinet parts, we take the most used chipboard with a thickness 16 mm... If you plan to make a cabinet from chipboard 18 mm, in all calculations, instead of the number 16, you must substitute 18.

I simplified the sketch a little, leaving only the most important details.

Let's start calculating

1 First step. We write down

Write out absolutely all the details that are present on the sketch of the wardrobe. It is better to write it out on a separate sheet of paper in a column. Like that:

  • Bottom- 1 PC. - ...
  • Plinth- 2 pcs. - ...
  • Roof- 1 PC. - ...
  • Shelf- 5 pieces. - ...

2 Second step. Mathematical calculation of each element.

    Roof- 1 PC. - 1700 x 700 mm

The size of the roof completely coincides with the dimensions of the wardrobe. That is, its depth is equal to the depth of the cabinet, and the length corresponds to the width of the cabinet.

  • Bottom- 1 PC. - 1668 x 700 mm

Again, the bottom depth is equal to the total cabinet depth - 700mm. But the width is 1700 - 32 (16 + 16) = 1668 mm. In the variant where the sides are on the floor and no adjustable feet are used, the bottom of the cabinet is located between the two sides. This means that it is necessary to subtract 16 mm (chipboard thickness) twice (two sides) from the overall size of the wardrobe.

  • Plinth- 2 pcs. - 1668 x 100 mm

The length of the bottom bar is equal to the length of the bottom, since it is also clamped by the outer sides, and the height can vary from 50 to 200 mm. Two plinths are needed, because it is they who support the bottom and will not allow it to bend during operation.

  • Outside sides- 2 pcs. - 2334 x 700 mm

It is technologically correct if the cabinet roof is mounted on the sides and not between them. In order to find out the height of the outer side, it is enough to subtract 16 mm from the total height of the sliding wardrobe: 2350 - 16 = 2334 mm.

  • Inner side- 1 PC. - 2186 x 600 mm

Important! The main mistake of beginners is neglecting the overall dimensions of the sliding system. The lintel and all shelves inside the wardrobe must be recessed to a size equal to the depth of the selected sliding system.

Side depth: 700 - 100 (system size) = 600 mm
Side height: 2350 - 32 (bottom + roof) - 100 (base) = 2186 mm

  • Shelf- 5 pieces. - 766 x 600 mm

Shelf - 2 pcs. - 886 x 600 mm
Shelf - 1 pc. - 670 x 600 mm

Let me remind you that we moved the inner lintel of the cabinet to the side by 60 mm so that the drawers would not rest against the sliding facade when opening. Therefore, it is now necessary to calculate the internal size of each cabinet section.

Shelf length:

  1. 1700 - 48 (two outer sides + inner lintel) = 1652 mm
  2. 1652: 2 = 826 mm - this would be the size of the shelves without the installation of drawers.
  3. 826 + 60 = 886 mm - the length of the inner shelves of the section where there are no drawers.
  4. 826 - 60 = 766 mm - the length of the shelves in the part where the sliding elements are planned to be installed.
  5. Check: The sum of all elements (the size of the shelves and the thickness of the chipboard) should be equal to the overall size of the cabinet.

886 + 766 + 48 = 1700 mm (hurray, the calculation was done correctly!)

Shelf depth:

The depth of the shelves is equal to the depth of the inner side, i.e. 600 mm.

Important! Conduct a reconciliation at each stage of the calculations. The sum of all sizes of parts should not exceed the overall size of the wardrobe.

We calculate the length of the shelf:

886 - 200 - 16 (jumper) = 670 mm.

  • Additional inner side(section for ironing board) - 1 pc. - 600 x 1600 mm

The depth of the lintel corresponds to the depth of all internal parts of the wardrobe - 600 mm, and the height depends on the size of the board. I measured my ironing board, its standing height is 1550 mm. I added 50 mm to this size (technological gap for convenience) and went out to 1600 mm.

  • Drawer

Facade - 3 pcs. - 150 x 760 mm
Internal parts - 6 pcs. - 550 x 120 mm; 6 pcs. - 708 x 120 mm.

The height of the front of the inner drawer is arbitrary, let it be 150 mm today. The width of the front of the drawer should be 4 mm less (including the gluing of PVC or the edge) than the inner opening in which the drawer is installed.

766 - 4 (technological gap) - 2 (this dimension varies depending on the selected edge) = 760 mm.

Drawer top view

Take a close look at the appearance of the drawer. I hope you noticed that it has five parts.

One detail is the facade, we have already calculated its size. The length of the parts "a" depends on the length of the rail. That is, if you bought 550 mm runners, then the size of the drawer side is 550 mm, no more and no less.

Detail "c" is calculated as follows: 766 - X (sled dimension) - 32 (two inner sides of the box). I take "X" for 26 mm - this is the standard size of roller guides, and I get: 766 - 32 - 26 = 708 mm.

The height of the inner parts of the box: 150 - 30 (clearance required for the installation of the slide) = 120 mm.

  • Fiberboard calculation

The back wall of the cabinet and the bottom of the drawers are made of fiberboard.

Rear wall size: 1700 x 2250 (2350 - base / plinth height 100 mm) - 1 pc.
The size of the bottom of the boxes: 550 x 740 (708 +32) - 3 pcs.

Basically, that's all. Here's a list of parts you should get:

Laminated chipboard 16 mm

1700 x 700 1
1668 x 700 1
1668 x 100 2
2334 x 700 2
2186 x 600 1
766 x 600 5
886 x 600 2
670 x 600 1
600 x 1600 1
150 x 760 3
550 x 120 6
708 x 120 6

Fiberboard

1700 x 2250 1
550 x 740 3

With this list, you can go to any furniture workshop that specializes in the sale and cutting of laminated chipboard. The manager will make a cut, calculate the cost and, at the appointed time, you will pick up a set of parts, from which you will independently assemble the wardrobe of your dreams.

But ... we're not looking for easy ways, are we? The fact is, furniture companies selling laminated chipboard sell it in sheets. That is, if only one part is located on one of the plates, they will sell you a whole sheet. And, an inexperienced buyer silently takes the sheet, as he believes that he has nowhere to go.

My next article will help you avoid buying excess chipboard. I will teach you how to make economical cutting at home and tell you about the pitfalls that you can really encounter when ordering chipboard in a furniture shop.

A sliding wardrobe is an extremely convenient and practical piece of furniture. Taking up almost no useful space in the room, it has a considerable capacity, and its external design is quite capable of decorating any interior of the room. The demand for such products is consistently high, and many owners are making attempts to build a wardrobe on their own.

I must say that there is every reason for this - special sets of profiles are on sale, which allow, with certain skills and special accuracy in work, to make such a cabinet with your own hands. The work will be successful if all measurements and necessary calculations are carefully taken. One of the key parameters is the width of the sliding doors of the wardrobe. It depends on several initial values - all this is taken into account by the proposed calculator for calculating the width of the sash of the wardrobe door.

Relevant explanations for the calculation - in the text section below the calculator.

If you make a sliding wardrobe according to your own drawings, when calculating the width, as a rule, the smallest indicator is taken, since if you take a larger width, the walls of the cabinet simply will not fit between the walls because of this narrowest segment. In practice, most often it turns out that the measurements made are not enough to reveal the smallest indicator, even if the difference will be in a few millimeters, so it is advisable to take as many measurements as possible.

An average of 60 millimeters is subtracted from the found value, that is, 30 millimeters on each side, which probably guarantees that the cabinet design will perfectly fit into the prepared opening. For example: our opening is 2060mm, then we make the cabinet itself 2000mm wide.

In general, these calculations largely depend on three aspects:

  • From the slope of the walls. It is recommended that you make as many measurements as possible if your walls are especially uneven or if you level them beforehand.
  • From the number of measuring points. The more measurements are made at different heights, the more accurately the length is calculated, the fewer millimeters will have to be subtracted to take into account the possible error.
  • From the structure of the cabinet. It is simpler with a built-in wardrobe, while a stand-alone design will require a greater distance to be taken to account for errors.

How to calculate cabinet height

To calculate the height of the wardrobe, it is not enough just to measure the distance from the ceiling to the floor at different levels, and, having found the smallest indicator, subtract millimeters of the hypothetical error from it. Usually, 10 centimeters are subtracted from the value of the distance from the ceiling to the floor, however, with this approach, you need to make sure that this segment does not exceed 2500 mm, and the depth indicator is not more than 700 mm. If your design does not meet these parameters, you will have to apply the Pythagorean theorem. The whole difficulty of calculating the height lies in the fact that these millimeters will then affect the installation of the entire structure.

Pythagoras' theorem: In a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs.

To assemble the wardrobe in a horizontal way, you it is necessary that the diagonal of the side wall fits between the floor and the ceiling... For example: we have a ceiling of 2500mm, then the length of the side wall of our cabinet should be 2400mm

Due to the dimensions of a standard wardrobe, during the assembly of the frame, the structure is placed horizontally to make it more convenient. At the end of the assembly, the frame rises vertically and the assembly resumes. This method is much more convenient, moreover, in order to assemble the frame in an upright position, several pairs of hands are needed, and sometimes this is not possible. It is because of the horizontal way of assembling the frame that it is necessary to apply the Pythagorean theorem. Otherwise, with the wrong approach, that is, with an error in the calculations, the frame may simply not stand upright, clinging to the ceiling... If a mistake was made, the only way out is to assemble the structure immediately in an upright position, which is much more difficult and almost impossible to carry out independently.

Each wardrobe has a volume of usable space, that is, a certain amount of space where you can store things. The remaining space, that is, useless, is usually occupied by a sliding system, which requires a carefully calculated distance to function reliably. Typically on the sliding system is always left about 100 mm, since most of the systems offered on the market are the same and will fit this parameter.

When calculating the depth of the wardrobe, the following points are taken into account:

  • Maximum possibilities for calculating depth, based on the various characteristics and characteristics of the room. It happens that only 600 mm can be diverted to the full depth, which, minus 100 mm for the sliding system, becomes very small.
  • The choice of the appropriate functionality, which more or less matches the size of the space capabilities. With a small amount of usable space, for example, it will not be possible to place barbell under clothes in the standard form, as it requires not less than 500 mm.
