OSB act as one of the relatively new materials used in construction and finishing works, moreover, OSB has recently become increasingly popular among builders and private developers. OSB is laid on a wooden floor, as well as on concrete bases. The material is characterized by lightness and increased strength, in comparison with analogues, their structure is able to perfectly withstand the effects of moisture. It is easy to install OSB, and the cost of these products is very low.

OSB is a moisture resistant material, which indicates its increased strength.

Installation features

When arranging floors, it is preferable to use OSB-3 slabs, since they are characterized by high density and moisture resistance.

If the floor is leveled with OSB on the surface of the concrete screed, then a material whose thickness does not exceed 10 mm should be used, but if the slabs are mounted on the base of wooden logs, then more massive products should be used, the thickness of which will determine the step between the reinforced logs. The material for laying on logs should have a thickness of 15-18 mm, if the distance between them does not exceed 0.5 meters. But if the step between the lags is higher than 60 cm, then the plates should have a thickness within 22-25 mm. In fig. 1 you can see how the floor should be arranged using OSB boards.

The standard dimensions of products called OSB are 2440x1220 mm. Plates are easy to cut, for this you should use a circular saw, but it is better to refuse to use a jigsaw in the process of work, since it does not allow you to get a straight cut line, which is especially important for the further laying of linoleum.

Leveling a concrete floor with OSB

Leveling the OSB floor allows you to get an excellent base for laying various finishing coatings, among them: linoleum, ceramics, laminate, parquet. In addition to leveling, these products are able to provide sound insulation, which becomes possible due to the multi-layer dense structure of the material. OSB boards insulate and waterproof the floor well. If there is a concrete screed as a subfloor, wooden blocks are laid on the last, acting as floor logs, in addition, wooden logs help smooth out the errors of the concrete base.

In order to obtain the proper rigidity of the floor and its resistance to deformation, it is preferable to cover the OSB surface with slabs laid in 2 layers.

Moreover, each plate should have a small thickness - within 8-10 mm. In the second row, the slab should be laid on the OSB floor with some displacement so that the seams between the rows do not coincide. The layers of material should be fastened using a special glue, which can be replaced with fasteners in the form of spiral or ring nails.

It is possible to cover the concrete surface of the OSB with a slab without preliminary preparation in the form of laying wooden logs. In order for such a technology to have the right to life, the concrete screed must first be checked for horizontalness, using a long rule. If it has no errors, then you can proceed to the OSB plate immediately. In this case, you can level the floor using one layer of material, strengthening the products with dowels and self-tapping screws.

Leveling the surface with OSB boards should be carried out taking into account the arrangement of expansion joints, this is necessary because the products are capable of deforming during operation, absorbing moisture into the thickness of the wood elements, and then releasing it. Such gaps should be made between the plates, and their width should be approximately equal to 3 mm.

If the floor is leveled using floating technology, then during installation it will be necessary to ensure the distance from the walls to the flooring, which is 10-15 mm. When installing the material, floating floors do not imply the implementation of a rigid screed of slabs and walls, as well as the base.

Leveling a wooden floor with OSB

In the premises of houses that were built on a flooded or columnar base, the floors, as a rule, are laid on wooden logs made of multilayer boards or beams. To level the floor, and in this case, you can use OSB slabs, which are used not only as a rough, but also a finishing floor.

A timber floor based on a log should be tested for strength before fixing products to it. A sub-floor made of OSB on logs is arranged on the underside of the log, while the surface that turns out to be facing the soil must be treated with a protective coating, which can be, for example, bituminous mastic. In the space that was formed by the lags and the rough base, a heat insulator is mounted, the latter is protected from above with a protective material, for example, glassine. Then you can begin to install the base for the finished floor.

OSB panels, which make up the base for the finished floor, are mounted in one or two layers, the latter option involves laying the material perpendicular to each other. The first layer should be mounted with a joint on the joists on the smaller side. The layers can be reinforced with each other with spiral nails, and to ensure greater strength of the OSB floor surface, the slabs are additionally attached with glue. You can connect the plates and logs with self-tapping screws, strengthening them at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other. In fig. 2 you can see how the floor is leveled with OSB slabs, these recommendations will help with independent work.

Slabs should also be mounted on a wooden floor, providing the so-called expansion gaps, which is also done in the case of concrete bases.

As soon as the leveling of the floor with OSB boards is completed, you should decide whether to use such a base as a surface for laying the topcoat or leave OSB as the front finish of the floor, which is also often practiced. The strength and evenness of such a base allows you to immediately start further finishing work on the floor, however, such a floor can be left unchanged. The board will only need to be protected from mechanical wear, for which it is recommended to use varnish, which should be applied in several layers to the surface. Before starting painting, such a wooden floor must be cleaned of debris and dust by wet cleaning, and then dried.

If linoleum or carpet is supposed to be laid on the floor after leveling with slabs, then it will be necessary to ensure as smooth a transition as possible in the place where joints will form, this applies to all rolled materials. For this, it is preferable to use slabs that have the minimum permissible thickness. After it was possible to level the OSB floor, the gaps formed will need to be processed using an elastic sealant.

If, after leveling the floor with OSB plates, it is planned to lay ceramic tiles, then it will be necessary to ensure complete immobility and perfect reliability of the base. To do this, it is permissible to use a more frequent location of the lags, on which the slabs must be reinforced as carefully as possible and with the greatest amount of fasteners. The best solution would be to use the slabs for installation, which are equipped with a "tongue-and-groove" fastening. When laying tiles, use a special adhesive that is designed to work with wood and ceramic products.

Before leveling the floor with OSB boards, you need to familiarize yourself with the technology, otherwise the work will have to be redone, for example, due to the previously unnoticed unevenness of the base. So, the surface of the logs can be leveled by the planing method, and the concrete floor can be leveled by laying wooden chocks. This is true for minor irregularities, as correcting with concrete may not give the expected results.

The use of OSB boards guarantees a quick and high-quality leveling of surfaces in any room. To carry out the work, no special skills and tools are required. If the slabs are laid on logs, then the step between the latter should be 56 cm, this is great for installing all modern types of heat insulators. If you want to save money, then the use of OSB boards for leveling will be an excellent solution, because they not only themselves have a democratic cost, but can also be used without additional finishing.

  • the highest quality is considered to be the products of Canadian and European manufacturers, it is produced using modern technologies and meets the E1 standard (environmental safety);
  • it is best if OSB-3 is laid (fastened) on the floor;
  • for concrete pavement, it is necessary to use slabs up to 10 mm thick; for wood pavement, their thickness depends on the distance between the joists.

The size of a standard OSB board is 2440x1220 mm, so the required amount is calculated based on the location so that a minimum of waste is obtained. Using a circular saw, it is easy to cut the required size; it is not recommended to use a jigsaw for this, since it is not always possible to get an even cut with it.

Laying OSB on a concrete floor

If your room has a concrete floor, then fixing OSB as a flooring material is an excellent solution.

After OSB is laid on the concrete floor, finishing materials can be installed: tiles, linoleum, laminate, parquet.

The main functions of OSB on a concrete floor:

When calculating the number of slabs, it is necessary to take into account that the losses when cutting the slab are 7-10%.

  • leveling the imperfect floor surface, which usually has irregularities, height differences and other defects;
  • reliable sound insulation, which is ensured by the multilayer structure of the material, which allows you to well absorb various noises;
  • waterproofing and floor insulation. The specified material has a natural base, high heat-saving characteristics and moisture resistance.

If there are significant irregularities in the concrete coating, then the OSB-slab is not fastened immediately to the floor, but to wooden bars, which play the role of a lag.

To ensure maximum rigidity and resistance to deformation, it is better to use OSB plates with a thickness of 8-10 mm, laid in two layers. It is necessary to lay the layers with an offset, they are attached to each other with spiral nails or glue.

If the concrete floor is flat, then you can lay the OSB directly on it, in which case one layer will be enough, it is fastened with self-tapping screws or dowels. Although the material is moisture resistant, it partially absorbs moisture and expands slightly. To compensate for possible expansion or contraction, expansion gaps between the slabs of up to 3 mm must be provided.

Processing material

OSB boards can be used as an independent floor covering, or it can be used as a base for laminate, linoleum or parquet.

This coating can be used independently, for this it is cleaned, and then several layers of varnish are applied to it.

If the roll materials are to be laid, then it is necessary to ensure a smooth transition at the joints, the plates are taken of the minimum thickness. They try to make gaps from the side of the wall, they are treated with an elastic sealant.

To cover the floor with tiles, the base must be completely motionless, therefore the OSB must be installed especially carefully. The tiles are placed on a special glue, which ensures a reliable connection between ceramics and wood.

Laying slabs under the laminate does not imply special requirements, only at the joints the surface should be perfectly flat.

Many floor coverings require a level base. One of the possible options is OSB floor. It can be done on logs, on a sub-floor, or laid on concrete. You just need to choose the right class, material thickness and follow the installation rules.

OSB is a sheet finishing and building material. The given name consists of the first letters of the full name: oriented strand board... This is how it stands for. But the name OSB and the Latin OSB are also found (sometimes they say USB, but this is from a completely different opera - this is a type of port in computer technology). The Latin name is the first letters from the English name Oriented Strand Board. The translation is the same as the Russian name. And the OSB version is just transliteration (replacing Latin letters with Russian) from the English abbreviation. Both options are eligible, but it is more correct, after all, the OSB.

Composition and properties

OSB is made from long chips (6-9 cm) of coniferous trees, which are mixed with resins and synthetic wax. The percentage of binders is low - 5-10% of the total mass. Small chips and wood dust from raw materials for OSB must be removed. This increases the strength and flexibility of the material, but increases its cost. Therefore, more expensive material of the same brand may be more practical.


What is OSB (OSB) - a material made of wood chips with resins

It is the binders - wax and resin - that impart increased moisture resistance to the material. In the basic version, this sheet material already comes with increased moisture resistance (it tolerates moisture better than, say, moisture resistant plywood). Waterproof OSB has practically zero water absorption. On the one hand, this is good. Such material serves as protection against moisture penetration. On the other hand, not very much. It is not possible to remove moisture from the room if the humidity has become high.


To increase strength and elasticity, the material is made multi-layer. This can be seen on the slab cut and ends. In the outer layers, the chips are placed along the long side of the slab, in the inner layers - across. This makes it much stronger. In addition to increased strength and water resistance, the properties of OSB are as follows:

  • Does not rot.
  • Almost does not swell in water, after drying it retains its shape.
  • They are not affected by fungi and mold.
  • Burns poorly.
  • High degree of elasticity.
  • Good sound insulation performance.
  • Easy to cut.
  • You can paint with any paint, use varnish.
  • Sheets can be glued.

All these properties, coupled with a low cost, make this material popular. What can limit demand is formaldehyde emissions. This substance is found both in the wood itself (natural content) and in the binder. For indoor use only materials with formaldehyde emission class no higher than E1. This is an absolutely safe material that can be used even for children's and medical institutions.

Classes, sizes, markings

OSB was invented in Canada and gradually appeared on the market of other countries. With its low weight, the material has high strength, which makes it popular in frame construction. There are two classifications of OSB boards. According to the European EN 300, there are four classes, which differ in the degree of water resistance:


The third class is most often used in our country. It has a sufficient level of strength and moisture resistance, both for indoor and outdoor use. If you want to make a floor from OSB, look at the slabs of this class. If you prefer to have a safety factor, put the fourth grade. But finding him is not easy. Due to the high cost, it is produced infrequently.


Plywood OSB - classes and their main characteristics

Sometimes in our market you can find American oriented strand board. Their classification is different. It can be roughly correlated with the European one like this:

  • Interior roughly matches OSB2. Can be used for interior work in dry rooms.
  • Exposure 1 - similar in characteristics to OSB3. Withstands wet conditions for a short time, so they can be used in damp rooms or for outdoor decoration, subject to the subsequent installation of a moisture-resistant finish.
  • Exterior - an analogue of OSB4 for covering the frame from the outside.

With the American and Canadian OSB (OSB), everything is also clear. If you want to make a floor from OSB, take Exposure 1. By the way, it is usually of better quality than domestic one.

Which is better - OSB or plywood, OSB or fiberboard

About which of the sheet materials is better, we will talk about the use of OSB (OSB) for the floor. If we compare fiberboard and oriented strand board, then it is better to take the last material on the floor. It is less heavy, more flexible. Compared to plywood, it is cheaper. In general, it is difficult to compare with plywood, since this material, depending on the technology (glued or bakelite) and the original wood (coniferous or birch), has very different characteristics.


What can be said unequivocally:

  • Fasteners in OSB hold up better. By 25% when compared to softwood plywood, and by the same when compared to fibreboards.
  • When moisture gets in, OSB hardly swells. After keeping in water for 24 hours, its dimensions increase by no more than 10%. In this it is definitely better than plywood and chipboard.
  • After drying, plywood and fiberboard exfoliate and begin to crumble. This is not the case with OSB. It dries up and looks exactly the same as before.

Based on these properties, the OSB floor will be more reliable. Water on the floor is not uncommon. So this is important. Formaldehyde is present both in plywood and chipboard. It can also be neutralized using VASILOL primer. It absorbs formaldehyde and partially binds styrene. For complete safety, you can add STYRODET, which absorbs styrene. An additional advantage is the complete incombustibility of the material - this is very important for wooden and frame houses.

OSB floor on logs: sheet thickness and installation step of the log

When installing the floor along the logs, it is not necessary to lay boards on them. You can use sheet material. As an option - the floor is made of OSB along the logs. The thickness of the sheet is selected depending on the step of installing the support: the more often the timber stands, the smaller the thickness of the slab is required:

  • The lag step is 40-42 cm, the slab must be at least 15 mm thick. If a high load is planned, 18 mm is better.
  • The lags are installed after 50 cm, the thickness of the slab should be 20-22 mm.
  • The beam is fixed with a step of 60 cm, OSB is placed with a thickness of 23-25 ​​mm.
  • If there is a rough floor on the logs, you can put sheets 10-12 mm thick on top.

We select a specific value from the range depending on the planned load. For example, for a summer cottage where massive furniture is not expected, you can take a thinner one (from the fork that is given for each step of laying the lag). For a permanent home, it is better to take a thicker one than then think about how to eliminate sagging.

As you understand, any of the options can be implemented - with any distance between the lags. How do you choose? For reasons of economy. Estimate for the price. In terms of strength and reliability, they will be equivalent, but in price they may differ. In each region, the situation with the prices of materials is different. Somewhere nearby they produce slabs, somewhere you can buy timber inexpensively. So consider each of the options and, based on the calculations, make a choice.

What else can you be guided by when choosing a lag step? The dimensions of the OSB sheet - the joint of the plates should fall on the timber. Therefore, the distance between them is selected so that both plates rest on the beam.


What height should be the logs under the OSB? Depends on what properties the floor should have. If you need additional insulation and sound insulation, then appropriate materials can be laid in the gaps. In this case, the height of the lag is selected depending on the thickness of the materials. If you make a floor from OSB along logs in an apartment, for sound insulation, you should put a piece of vibration-damping foam rubber under each log. Stick the same gaskets on the ends that go to the walls. Rubber can be bought at auto dealerships and is sold in strips glued to a sheet. Several such strips with glue on the bottom of each support bar. This will help make you almost inaudible to the neighbors below, and will also significantly reduce the noise that is transmitted through concrete structures.

OSB laying: installation rules

Although the OSB changes its dimensions slightly, there is still a thermal and humidity expansion. Therefore, when laying sheets indoors, we observe the following rules:


For soft surfaces (linoleum, carpet, vinyl tiles), the seams must be filled. To preserve the elasticity of the joint, an elastic sealant is used, which, after drying, "will not thicken".

How and what to fix OSB to logs and boards

When attaching OSB plywood to the joists, you can use self-tapping screws or brushed nails. For greater reliability, fasteners are sometimes lubricated with glue (universal). Which is preferable, nails or screws?


So it is more reliable and convenient to mount OSB on high-quality self-tapping screws. But this is if there are no time and price restrictions.

Fasteners are installed along the perimeter of the sheet and in intermediate beams (if any). The step is not normalized. They are guided by sensations. But the obligatory fixation of the corners, and then, on the long side, they put fasteners in increments of 40-60 cm. At this point, who defines "reliability".

Features of laying OSB on a wooden floor

If you have a plank floor that you want to cover with another floor covering, you need to level it. For this, sheet construction or finishing materials are laid on the wooden floor. One of the options is OSB. You can put a not too thick sheet on the boards - 10-12 mm is already enough.


First, the boards are leveled, eliminating irregularities. Then the OSB boards are laid. They are positioned so that the long side runs across the boards. The laying rules are the same as described above. The joints of the sheets should fall on the board, preferably in the middle of it.


If some other material already lies along the logs - boards, plywood, fiberboard - you can put OSB on top. In this case, the sheets must be positioned so that the seams of the lower layer do not coincide with the joints of the upper one.

OSB on concrete floor

Concrete is a solid base, but very cold. And a regular screed is rarely perfectly flat, so it needs to be leveled. Sometimes, over time, cracks appear in the screed. They also need to be repaired, since it is not worth putting a topcoat on such a base. There are two ways. The first is to lay logs on concrete, fill the gap with insulation, and lay OSB or other sheet material on top. This option is correct, and it is described above. But sometimes it is impossible to steal even those 5-8 centimeters from the height, since the ceilings in the rooms are low. Then you can do it wrong - lay the OSB directly on the concrete.


Laying OSB slabs on a concrete floor is not an entirely correct definition. Rather, not lay, but glue. Acrylic glue is used (not for tiles, but just universal mounting glue). When choosing a composition, pay attention that it is compatible with concrete and wood, and the brands may be different.


How to glue OSB on concrete

Glue is applied to the base, passed with a notched trowel with a tooth of 4-6 mm (more is possible, but the consumption of glue will be large). The height of the tooth depends on the size of the irregularities that are present. The height of the tooth should be 2 times greater than the amplitude of the irregularities. But such an alignment will work only if the difference is not more than 4 mm. In case of more significant irregularities, it is necessary either to fill in the leveling screed, or to grind the existing one, removing the most significant protrusions.

Before laying OSB, concrete is primed. You can use the same glue, diluted with water, or with another acrylic primer. If necessary, a water-repellent primer can be found.


Plates are not placed close to the walls, but leaving a gap of 5-8 mm to compensate for thermal expansion. The same gap is left between the plates. So that there is no empty space around the perimeter, foam plastic of suitable thickness is rolled out or cut into strips under the wall.

To make it easier to maintain the gaps between the plates, spacers of suitable thickness can be used. As an option - crosses for laying tiles. After laying each sheet, be sure to check its horizontality, control the level with adjacent sheets. They should all be at the same height.


If in the future there is a soft floor covering (linoleum, carpet, vinyl tiles), the seams must be repaired. They are filled with an elastic sealant.

Note! It is important that the sealant remains elastic after drying. Then he will act as a compensator. Otherwise, it will simply crumble.

OSB as a finishing coat for the floor

Sometimes there is not enough money for a finishing floor covering. In this case, the OSB floor can be left without finishing for some time. But if the stove is not covered with anything, in places of intensive use, the chips can bulge. To prevent this from happening, it should be varnished in several layers. You choose the varnish at your discretion, but keep in mind that there should be at least two layers. The view is quite normal, although not "luxury".

The consumption of varnish on the OSB floor is very high. The slab does not absorb moisture, but the varnish leaves like a sponge. To reduce consumption, it is better to prime the chipboard first. Choose a primer for the chosen varnish. And it is better to cover with soil twice. The consumption of varnish will still be high, but much lower than without impregnation.


One more point. If you use unpolished OSB, the surface may be uneven. This is typical for not very high quality slabs. If varnished without preparation, a lot of varnish will go away. If you have a sander, with medium to fine grit sandpaper, you can remove the protruding parts, walk with a vacuum cleaner, then a primer and then varnish. If there is no grinder, when buying plates, pay attention to the surface quality. If possible, take, after all, a polished OSB.

  • Warming and waterproofing... The natural base of the slab provides good heat-saving functions, and the resistance to water, inherent in OSB-3 class products, protects against moisture contained in the concrete base.

Most often, the slabs are laid on wooden blocks, which play the role of floor lags and allow you to smooth out errors.

To ensure the required rigidity and resistance to deformation, it is better to use two layers of slabs of small thickness (8-10 mm), laid with a slight offset. The layers are fastened to each other using special glue and spiral or ring nails.
