How to use a gas burner for a roof. Do-it-yourself gas burner for the roof. How to make a gas burner with your own hands

In a home workshop or garage, there is often a need to use a gas burner. The application for it is the widest - from soldering to roof repair. Not to mention the need to warm up the metal part for processing.

When metalworking with a gas burner, you can heat the workpiece with the aim of subsequent hardening. If you are engaged in electric welding, when working with some metals, it is necessary to warm up the place of the future seam.

Tool shops sell a variety of fire safety accessories. The propane burner can be of any size and configuration. The size of a ballpoint pen for jewelry soldering.

Or m roof nozzle ramp for heating bitumen on the roof:

The industrial versions have the advantage of the safety certificate. However, there is nothing in the design that cannot be repeated at home. Since any product in the store costs a lot of money, we will tell you how to make a gas burner with your own hands.

Important! Homemade devices for working with fire are potentially dangerous. Therefore, a propane burner manufactured without technical expertise is operated at your own risk.

Drawings and step-by-step instructions for the manufacture of a burner

Consider in detail the nuances that you should pay attention to when making a burner.

  • First of all, it is necessary to use refractory metals. A correctly adjusted burner can produce up to 1000 ° C, so the nozzle must correspond to the flame temperature;
  • It is important to find a reliable crane. If something goes wrong - first of all, the gas supply is cut off, and the danger is eliminated. If the tap passes, you will not be able to quickly extinguish the flame;
  • The connection to the gas source (a can with a valve or a 5 liter propane bottle with a reducer) must be reliable. It is during the operation of low-quality shut-off valves that most accidents occur.

For soft roofs, the optimal waterproofing and thermal insulation materials are those that are fused with a roofing torch. This is a time-consuming and complex work, which, moreover, is performed at a height. The result of high-quality installation will be a long service life of the roof. Therefore, only high-quality equipment is selected for work. In this article, we will consider the existing types and advantages of various roofing burners.

What is a roof burner

This is a special equipment for heating the welded roof. In addition, with the help of a burner, the surface is dried, the workpieces for construction work are heated, the building paint is fired and used in all work where elements or surfaces are required to be heated.

The gas burner for the roof consists of:

  • a metal glass made of heat-resistant material;
  • gas hose;
  • burner ignition nozzles with wind protection.

The roof burner is a mobile design with comfortable carrying handles. It has a low weight, up to 1.5 kg and is equipped with an easy-to-use wooden or plastic handle up to 1 m long.

Most often propane is used as a gas. It enters the housing through the gas hose. Its supply and flame length are regulated using a special valve on the burner. To save consumed gas, roof burners are equipped with a reducer that controls fuel consumption.

All designs of gas burners are provided with an atmospheric air suction system. This is a required function, but there are also additional ones that make the work more comfortable. First of all, the ability to regulate operating modes. For example, when there is a break in operation, the standby mode is activated and fuel is saved. Any gas burner is lit with regular matches or a lighter.

Less popular, but also used for roofing work, are diesel burners.

Application of gas burners

They are used in most of the construction and industrial sectors.

The design of gas burners depends on the fuel they run on and on the application. But in general they are identical. The burner, consisting of a body, a flame adjustment lever of the fuel supply valve, is connected to a gas cylinder through a reducer. Some manufacturers complement the designs of gas burners with additional wind protection of the flame and piezo ignition.

Types of gas burners

Hand torches are used to lay roofs made of bituminous materials. Most often these are propane burners for the roof of the lever structure. They are comfortable to work with - the flame length can be easily adjusted by simply pressing the lever mechanism, switching to an economical mode of gas consumption.

During operation, the gas burner consumes a mixture of propane with air or with the addition of technical oxygen. The safest for work are gas-air burners. They provide sufficient temperature for roofing work, heating metal parts, annealing paint and soldering cables.

Valve-type gas burners are easy to use, lightweight and easy to repair. By creating a high flame with high power, they make it possible to carry out work even in windy weather.

There are also acetylene burners that use a mixture of acetylene and oxygen. Most often they are used for welding. They are arranged in such a way that oxygen, in acetylene injection burners, is needed not only to maintain combustion, but also to supply acetylene.

In addition, burners differ in functionality and have different abbreviations:

GV 500

They are used for roofing works. It is capable of creating a heating temperature of up to three hundred degrees, which is quite enough for fusing all bituminous materials;

GV 850

More advanced model. Has a valve for fine adjustment of the supply of technical gas from the cylinder. And thanks to the lever, the flame length can be easily adjusted during work. Its capacity is sufficient for melting metal-plastic pipes and refractory cables.

GV 3

Powered by propane. Used for heating and welding metal and manual soldering. The size of the diameter of the glass is 5 cm.

GGS1-1.7

The most versatile and most popular burner. Heats the surface up to four hundred degrees. It is used when laying soft roofing materials, road and waterproofing works. The power is 115 kW with a fuel consumption of 9 kg / h.

GGS1-1.0

Indispensable for work in confined spaces and on roofs with a large angle of inclination. It is a good replacement for a conventional blowtorch. With its small size (length 50cm) it has great power, is safe, economical and convenient to use. Its power is 40 kW, and the gas consumption is 3 kg / h.

GGS1-0.5

Used for small roof repairs, soldering, welding cables. Due to its economical fuel consumption, it can work with a five-liter gas cylinder. The power is 10 kW, the consumption is 0.7 kg / h.

GGS2-1.5

Equipped with two parallel sockets, which gives it a high performance. The power is 179 kW with a fuel consumption of 14 kg / h.

GGS4-1.0

Or a unroller. It has 4 sockets, which provides simultaneous heating with a width of 1 meter and allows you to work without interruption. On the cuts there are special hooks for the roofing material, with their help, all the work on its installation can be performed by one person. Power 120 kW, consumption - 12 kg / h.

Gas burners are used in all types of construction and repair work and can heat surfaces up to four hundred degrees. In particular: Gas-air injection burner GG-2, gas burner GVK 1, oil burner GRZh-1, propane burner GSP-3, propane burner GVK-1-R, propane burner GSP-4 and others.

The price of gas burners for roofing varies greatly and depends on many factors: on performance, additional functions, on the ability to work with one or another fuel, as well as on the manufacturer. It is worth noting that they are inexpensive and available to most consumers.

What you need to know when working with a soft roof gas burner?

Let's consider this using the example of roofing work when laying roofing material:

  • first, the entire surface is cleaned - not only large debris is removed, but also fine dust;
  • for marking, sheets of roofing material are laid out on the roof with an overlap of up to 10 cm, after which it is twisted, and the edges of all sheets are fixed with a gas burner at the base of the roof;

  • during operation, a roll of roofing material is rolled out gradually, melting and pressing tightly to the roof surface. All creases and bubbles under the material should be immediately removed. When working on flat roofs, this is done with a hand roller;
  • the final stage of work with a gas burner will be the heating of all seams of roofing material. When heated, it melts, sticking tightly to the bottom sheet. Additionally, the seams are reinforced with a hand roller.

When a high-quality gas burner with adjustable fuel supply is used for work, up to 600 m of roofing material can be laid non-stop.

Important! It is allowed to use a gas burner for a soft roof at a temperature of at least 15 degrees. If work is required at a lower temperature, a liquid fuel burner is required.

Safety precautions when working with a roofing gas burner

  • It is required to carry out roofing work in special clothing and shoes with non-slip soles;
  • use a fall arrest system;
  • before starting to use, the gas burner is carefully inspected. It is necessary to make sure that all structural elements are in good condition;
  • during burner operation, there must be no second gas cylinder on the roof. Also, periodically it is necessary to check the tightness of the connection of the hose with the reducer and the cylinder;
  • when igniting the burner, in no case should you be in front of the nozzle;
  • it is necessary to adjust the height of the flame so that it does not touch the cylinder, hose or people;
  • when heating the roofing material to be welded, it must not be allowed to ignite;
  • only the lower part of the sheet should melt, without softening the entire thickness of the material;
  • When igniting a propane burner, first open the valve half a turn and leave to purge for a few seconds. And only then the mixture can be ignited and the height of the flame can be adjusted;
  • with a working gas burner, it is prohibited to leave the work area or climb the scaffolding;
  • to extinguish the burner, the gas supply is first shut off, and then the lock lever is lowered;
  • if the burner overheats or a kickback occurs, work immediately stops, the gas is shut off, and the burner is put to cool in a container with cold water.

Buy a ready-made burner or make it yourself?

It should be said right away that it will be much easier and safer to buy a ready-made burner than to make it yourself. But if you have confidence in your abilities and love to do everything with your own hands, then you can try.

A gas burner is a complex device and in order to make it, certain skills are required, and thorough adherence to many rules. But all the same, it is better to leave part of the work for professionals. This primarily concerns the gas supply system and storage tanks.

A metal rod and a diffuser are used to make a torch. Attach them to a heat-resistant wood handle.

The gas hose is taken from a gas welding system or machined from brass yourself.

Despite the fact that outwardly a self-assembled roofing burner will differ significantly from store-bought counterparts, it will cope with its main functions.

But when working with it, you will have to pay particular attention to the slightest gas leaks or other malfunctions. And even with a minor problem, work should be stopped immediately.

Diesel burner for roofing

These roof burners run on liquid fuel. They are especially relevant for work with a large temperature minus, in this case they are equipped with a built-in fuel heating. They are fully automated and are capable of handling fuels of various qualities. Diesel roof burners are equipped with a high-pressure blowing system that ensures stable and safe ignition and reduces soot formation.

Liquid fuel burners are structurally different from their gas counterparts. The diesel fuel enters the chamber under high pressure, which causes the liquid to atomize. And already atomized tiny particles are ignited at the exit from the nozzle, creating a flame. In this connection, the burner is connected to the compressor and the fuel tank using oil-resistant hoses.

An oil fired roof burner is designed to operate under the following conditions:

  • at ambient temperatures from - 25 to + 40 degrees;
  • at atmospheric pressure - 101 kPa;
  • if necessary, the flame temperature is up to 600-800 degrees.

In this case, the approximate consumption of diesel fuel is 10 l / 100 m2 of area.

How to work with a diesel roof burner:

  • check the serviceability of all structural elements;
  • turn on the compressor to supply air to the nozzle. Then, by opening the fuel supply valve, bring a special ignition harness to the nozzle. After igniting with the diesel fuel supply valve, adjust the flame level.

Today, there are two technologies for laying roll-up waterproofing materials, both have their own strengths and weaknesses.

For the hot method, you need to use gas burners, you can buy them ready-made or make yourself.

Regardless of the specific type, all burners operate according to the same principle. Gas is supplied from a cylinder through an oil-resistant reinforced rubber hose. Constant pressure values are provided by the reducer, if desired, the parameters can be adjusted with a special bolt on the top cover of the device. The fuel volume is regulated by a valve. The rubber hose is put on the metal tube of the torch and screwed on tightly with a hose clamp. The burner has special holes along the entire perimeter, through which air enters for mixing with gas.

The flame is ignited and a metal nozzle is directed to the desired area. Old models of heating pads are manually ignited with matches or lighters, modern models have piezoelectric elements for remote and safe ignition.

The design of the burner provides a stable flow of flame, it is not blown out even by very strong gusts of wind. Such burners are used not only during roofing work. Sealing of metal pipelines, some road works, etc., cannot do without them.

What are the advantages of a modern industrial burner?

  1. Light weight. The weight of the device does not exceed 1.5 kg, which greatly facilitates the work. The roofer's hand does not get tired, he has the ability to heat up the bitumen at the same speed. The optimum temperature of the entire area is achieved, the quality of the roofing increases, and productivity increases.
  2. The gas supply valve and the reducer allow smooth regulation of the flame intensity. The torch changes without stopping the operation of the device, the master makes a decision during the installation process, taking into account the actual state of the old flat roof surface.
  3. On the most modern models, there are special devices that exclude direct contact of the heated burner with roll materials or the base. If a very hot burner touches the membranes, they can completely break their tightness, which is considered a defect. Such areas need to be repaired, which takes time and money.

Types of industrial gas burners

The technical parameters of the devices depend on their purpose, it is necessary to choose the one that is best suited for a particular job.

Gas burner typePurpose and short description
GG-2Belongs to the class of small, has a small length and nozzle diameter. It is used to facilitate the deposition of flexible roofs in hard-to-reach places. Consumes a small amount of gas.
GG-2SA modernized device with improved combustion parameters. To expand the scope of use, it is completed with spare burners of various diameters and lengths. The master has the ability to change them as necessary to achieve the required heating temperatures of bitumen.
GGK1Robust case, used by professionals. It can withstand a long cycle, is not afraid of overheating. The reinforced burner has an increased mass - this refers to the disadvantages of the device.
GGS1-1.7The nozzle is located at a great distance from the control handle - it makes work easier, you can take the most comfortable body position. The gas supply control valve is made of wear-resistant materials, the glands completely exclude gas leaks, which significantly increases the safety of roofing work.
GWModels GV-900 and GV-550 are produced. They differ in length, the first model has dimensions of 90 cm, the second 55 cm. During the fusion of the roof, you can change the units taking into account the distance to the base.

If the gas burner is manufactured by a licensed company, then it meets half of the existing safety regulations. It is strongly discouraged to purchase cheap fakes, the ignition of the units during the production of work causes very severe burns.

How to make a gas burner yourself

Not everyone can do it, you need to have the skills of soldering and welding, be able to work on metal-working machines, and have locksmith tools. For manufacturing, you need a piece of pipe for a nozzle with a length of 110 mm and a diameter of 50 mm.

Sizes may vary slightly, but not widely. As practice shows, such a nozzle gives sufficient flame to heat the roof and consumes a moderate amount of gas. The nozzle is fixed to the handle with metal strips, they can be boiled or fastened with rivets. The second option takes more time, but is characterized by increased reliability. The riveted joint does not respond to repeated heating for high temperatures, welds under such operating conditions will crack over time.

Gas is supplied to the burner with a copper or metal tube. It is advisable to choose a copper one, you can solder a nozzle to it, you do not have to cut a thread under it inside a metal tube. This makes things much easier.

One of the main elements of a gas burner is a nozzle, its diameter should be 0.75 mm. This parameter is written on the front surface. The nozzle can be bought at the store, the second option is to unscrew it from the old gas stove.

Hoses are put on tubes, diameters are selected individually.

Brazing copper requires a drill, copper-phosphorus rod, and a small gas burner to heat the metal.

Step 1. Take a die and cut a thread on the nozzle. If you already have it - great, there is less work. Work very carefully with the die, the nozzle is thin and the copper is not very strong. Be sure to coat the surfaces with machine oil or soapy water. The movements of the plate should be reciprocating.

Step 2. Solder a small nipple with a smaller diameter into the tube. This should be done in the following sequence.

  1. Prepare your workplace. It is better to use fireclay bricks for this, they do not allow heat to pass through, the metal is not so cooled. In addition, fireclay bricks are not afraid of prolonged exposure to an open flame.
  2. Heat the tubes with a burner until they are dark red. More is needed, overheated copper loses its original properties, and this has a negative effect on its physical parameters. Buck evenly along the entire circumference of the joint with a margin along the length.
  3. Grab some borax with solder and start soldering, constantly keep the temperature of the tubes within the desired range.
  4. Rotate the tube gradually as you solder. Watch carefully so that there are no gaps, it is necessary to achieve complete tightness. The seam should be even, do not allow the formation of drips.
  5. Check the quality of welding around the entire perimeter, turn the tube. If you have problems with the tightness, then apply a second layer. There is no need to save on solder - then big problems can arise.

In the same way, weld on the other side of the tube the fitting for connecting the rubber hose.

Important. After the tube has cooled down, thoroughly blow it free of scale and slag. Tap the surface from different sides, use a compressor, etc.

If this is not done, then already during operation, small particles will clog the injector nozzle. We'll have to stop the fusion of the roof, which will affect the tightness of the roof. The nozzle can only be cleaned after the burner has completely cooled down. And this takes time.

Step 3. To improve the appearance, you can remove large beads of solder on an emery machine. But this is not necessary, the correct soldering process gives a very even seam.

Step 4. Screw the nozzle back into place, check the tightness of the connection. Close the nozzle with your finger and blow hard into the open end. If there is a leak, a drop in air pressure is felt. Then it is necessary to tighten the thread, if this does not help, then moisten all the connections with soapy water and blow again. Soap bubbles will appear in places of leaks, they must be soldered again.

Step 5. Insert the prepared tube with the nozzle into the nozzle, put on the hose from the opposite side. To increase the strength of the structure, first put on the clamps on the metal strips. With their help, they will be firmly tightened, the burner will be very stable.

Step 6. Tighten the clamps. It is not yet necessary very much, the distance of the nozzle to the burner will have to be adjusted during the test.

  1. Main copper tube. The outer diameter is 12 mm, the inner diameter is 8 mm. The length depends on the purpose of the burner.
  2. Nozzle. Wall thickness 3mm, length 110mm, diameter 50mm.
  3. Metallic stripes. Width 10 mm, thickness 2.5 mm.
  4. Outside diameter of the tube for the nozzle 8mm, interior 6mm. It just fits her thread. If the factory thread on the nozzle is inch, then it is better to drive it to metric.
  5. Soldered on the other side of the tube nozzle of the gas cylinder... With its help, the gearbox is fixed, it fits the diameter of a standard rubber hose.
  6. High pressure hose with an inner diameter of 9 mm. It is sold in specialized stores; you can purchase any number of meters.

Practical advice. Each technological stage is very important and has an impact on the safety of its use. Always keep this in mind.

Requirements for using the burner

Work with an open flame is considered hazardous to health and only adults are allowed to do it.

During the work with the burner, the following unfavorable factors may affect the worker: the outbreak of fire or ignition of the roofing material, explosion of the cylinder, thermal injuries, poisoning with bitumen vapors, excessive fatigue due to an uncomfortable posture. To protect against the listed risks, special measures must be taken, each employee must undergo training and instruction at the workplace. It is strictly forbidden to work with a gas burner while intoxicated, every violation of safety rules must be suppressed as soon as possible by the management team.

Before starting fusing, you need to free the workplace, provide for a specific location for the cylinder and combustible roofing materials. Nothing should interfere with the free movement, an accidental fall should be excluded as much as possible. If there are doubts about compliance with safety requirements, then work should not begin until the problems are completely eliminated.

In the event of an emergency, you need to call a doctor as soon as possible and provide first aid. In case of burns, the damaged areas should be watered with clean water. It is strictly forbidden to lubricate them with fat, oil, petroleum jelly and other folk remedies. Do not touch such places with your hands, do not open bubbles with liquid. After the occurrence of an emergency, all work on the roof is completely stopped until the arrival of the relevant services.

After the roof has been sealed, everything must be put in order: remove construction debris, roof sections, etc. The burner must be checked and cleaned, if there is damage, then repair or replacement is immediately carried out. If it is not possible to repair the device, then you must definitely remember this. Equipment and equipment must be stored in special places, access to them by third parties is limited.

Gas burners are used for fusing waterproofing materials onto flat roofs of various buildings and structures. What roll material is suitable for such work, its brief technical characteristics and practical advice -.

For repair and other roofing work, which involves melting mastics and laying roofing materials, you will need a special gas burner. The device is mainly used for the following tasks:

- heating and drying of roofing materials;

- metal cutting and soldering;

- firing a layer of old paint.

The approximate structure of a gas burner

The gas burner has a fairly simple design. It is a glass made of metal and equipped with a nozzle and a handle, which is fixed to the body. . For the manufacture of the handle, heat-resistant plastic or wood can be used. Gas enters the housing by passing through the gas pipeline. In most cases, pressurized propane is used to operate the burner.

The burner bowl must be shaped to protect the flame from wind blowing.

There is a valve on the body of the burner that allows you to adjust the length of the flame and the intensity of the supplied gas. It is good if the burner has a reducer that allows you to economically use gas.

Roof burner components

In the process of assembling the device, mechanical processing is practically not used. The burner is assembled from ready-made spare parts. To make it we need:

  1. A steel valve that can be taken from a cylinder designed for storing liquefied gas.
  2. A plug that is used to transport gas cylinders.
  3. Blowtorch jet with 0.8 mm nozzle diameter.
  4. A piece of pipe one meter long with an inner diameter of 10 mm. and a steel thickness of 2 mm.
  5. Wooden handle.

As a handle, you can use a handle from a burnt-out soldering iron.

Step-by-step burner manufacturing process

The process of making a gas burner begins with the fact that the supply pipe, which we will use as a steel pipe, is inserted into the handle and fixed with glue. The splitter and body must be machined from a brass bar, the diameter of which must be 20 mm. In the finished body, two radial holes are drilled (each diameter is 5 mm) and four holes in the divider rod (each diameter is 1 mm).

When assembling, it is necessary to press the divider into the body with a slight interference. At the same time, the flange is always installed inside the body with a gap, that is, the inner diameter of the manufactured body must be greater by 0.6 mm. diameter is machined. The resulting slit is responsible for slowing down the gas flow, which is supplied to the drilled holes in the igniter.

Such nozzles are in commercial models.

To make a thin hole in our nozzle, you need to take a drill with a diameter of 2 mm. and use it to make a blind hole, which is 1.5 mm. does not reach the exit. Drill with a diameter of 0.4 mm. used for jumper. The resulting hole must be completely stamped with gentle hammer blows. Then you need to sharpen the butt. To do this, we take sanding paper and grind it down until the desired section of the outlet is found, that is, until the moment when the nozzle can be put on the threaded burner tube tip.

At the end of the gas supply pipe, you must put on a supply hose made of fabric-rubber material. We fasten the hose to the tube with a clamp. We set the working pressure, after which we supply gas. Wait until all the air is forced out of the hose, and only then bring the nozzle into the gas burner flame.

The best option for thermal and waterproofing of a soft roof is the materials being welded with a gas burner for the roof. This is a rather complicated, time-consuming procedure that is carried out at a height. Therefore, only high-quality equipment is selected, since the operating period of the roof covering will depend on the final result.

Roof burner design features

The burner, designed to work on a roof structure, is a mobile device equipped with special handles for moving it. The mass of the unit is about 1.5 kg. The burner has a wooden or plastic handle for operation, its length can be up to one meter. Such equipment is specially designed for heating the overlaid roofing.

Basic operations that can be performed with a roof burner:

  • firing old paintwork;
  • cutting, soldering of metal products;
  • drying surfaces;
  • other work that requires heating surfaces to high temperatures in the process.

Equipment design elements:

  • a glass of heat-resistant metal;
  • ignition nozzles are equipped with special protection against strong winds;
  • gas supply hose.

Most often, propane gas is used for such equipment, which is supplied to the body through a special hose. Adjustment of gas supply, flame length is carried out using a valve equipped on the tool, and a reducer is additionally used to adjust the flow rate of the gas mixture.

All designs of this equipment have an air suction system. This function is required for the tool. To increase the comfort of working with the tool, a special operating mode regulator is additionally provided, which makes it possible to save fuel when the standby mode is turned on. To ignite the flame of the tool, you must have a lighter and matches on hand.

It's important to know! There is also a diesel burner for roof work, but it is not very popular.

How to properly operate a roof gas burner

The procedure for working with a propane gas roof burner is divided into separate steps. The main roofing covering, for the installation of which such equipment is used, is roofing felt.

Work order

  • Before starting work, the base is prepared for roofing material: cleaning from construction debris, other contaminants, leveling the surface (if necessary, a screed from a concrete mixture is carried out).
  • Roofing material is rolled out on the prepared base, while individual sheets of material are overlapped on top of each other.
  • Then the rolls of roofing material are rolled back, fixed at the base of the roofing slope with a gas burner for the roof. After that, while heating the roofing material and the base of the roof at the same time, slowly roll out the roll covering, carefully press it to the base. Adjacent rolls are soldered together.
  • The laid layer of material must be periodically rolled with a roller so that no air bubbles remain under the coating. Seams after soldering are also rolled.

Operating rules

  • It is forbidden to carry out installation work by means of a gas burner if T os is less than minus 15 °.
  • When using this equipment, a roof with an area of about 500 m2 can be covered.
  • The device must be equipped with reliable protection from strong winds, have a stable combustion flame.

Safety engineering

  • Before carrying out roofing work, gas hoses, a gas cylinder are checked for serviceability.
  • Work is carried out only in overalls, soft shoes and with safety equipment (at least cables, seat belts).
  • The gas cylinder is installed near the workplace, all equipment connections must be tight.
  • The flame at the moment of setting fire to the burner, during operation, it is forbidden to direct towards people, gas cylinder, hoses.
  • Do not overheat the soft roofing to prevent it from igniting.
  • It is forbidden to leave the workplace with a working device.
  • When lighting a propane burner, first turn the valve half-turn and blow out the device. After this procedure, you can ignite and adjust the power, flame length.
  • It is necessary to extinguish the gas burner in several stages: first, shut off the gas supply, second, lower the lock lever.
