How to attach decorative mdf sheets to the wall. How to glue MDF - features of installation work. What are mdf panels

When traditional natural materials begin to dry up, as happened with wood, there is natural desire to minimize losses and even use production waste.

So there were analogues of wooden boards based on sawdust and shavings - chipboard and fiberboard. From the "Mason's cannon" was produced fiberboard, which later received the name - MDF.

Types of material

By the density of the face layer fibreboards are differentiated by marking:

  • LDF from 200 to 600kg / m³;
  • HDF - over 800 kg / m³.

According to the regulations of the standard:

  • general purpose (MDF);
  • moisture resistant (MDF.H);
  • structural (MDF.LA).

By the type of front surface, plates are distinguished:

  • embossed (milled);
  • flat.

By covering possibilities:

  • rack (type-setting) - from 150 mm wide, up to 3700 mm long;
  • tiled (type-setting) - within: 30x30 and 98x98 cm;
  • sheet - 122x244 cm.

By finishing method:

  • laminated - pasted over with a polyvinyl chloride film (plain, with a pattern, glossy, matte, imitating natural materials);
  • veneered - with a top layer of valuable wood veneer;
  • painted - covered with paints and enamels (by pouring), creating an elastic layer, using the printing method.

In addition to synthetic film, paper-based films and paper laminates are used for finishing the boards.

Film coating not afraid of cleaning agents, resistant to mechanical stress, shows resistance to direct sunlight, but raises the cost of the material.

Advantages and disadvantages

The raw materials used for the production of MDF panels give them properties of natural wood, and even superior in mechanical properties.

MDF panels, like any material, have their pros and cons.

The obvious advantages of MDF:

  1. Strength.
  2. Moisture resistance.
  3. Frost resistance.
  4. Uniformity of the structure.
  5. Large selection of decorative finishes.
  6. Imitation of expensive natural materials.
  7. Long-term preservation of product geometry.
  8. Ease of installation.
  9. Fragmented repairs available.
  10. Profitability.
  11. Convenience of transportation.
  12. Relatively long service life.
  13. Sound insulation properties.
  14. Environmental Safety.

Disadvantages:

  1. The value of its own weight.
  2. Unsuitable for fastening with nails.
  3. Waste from processing in the form of dust.
  4. Vulnerable to open fire.
  5. Swelling in high humidity.
  6. Susceptibility to deformation under mechanical stress (impact, fall).

How to choose?

Accounting for technical characteristics material and the right choice of tools - the key to success in working with this type of facing board.

Selection of panels for interior wall decoration depends on many conditions:

  1. What material resources do you have.
  2. What tasks are solved by the covering possibilities of the material.
  3. What decorative load will the cladding bear within the framework of the design project?
  4. How important are the additional properties of the slab for a given room: moisture resistance, fire resistance.
  5. Does the protective (decorative) coating of the slab matter for compliance with hygiene standards?

The optimal choice is wall panel (780 kg / m³), in appearance and assortment, meeting the tastes and capabilities of the owner.

Scope of application

In rooms with constant humidity - bathrooms, indoor pools - the material exhibits increased fragility.

MDF panels found their application in various fields, in construction, for the manufacture of cabinet furniture, in the design of premises, the manufacture of arches, partitions and much more.

Application of mdf panels:

Do-it-yourself methods for attaching wall MDF panels

The most common technique alignment and simultaneous wall decoration- sheathe them with MDF plates.

Wall slabs can fix on the wall in two ways:

  • by frame technology (to a metal profile or to a wooden lathing);
  • mounting on glue (liquid nails).

On a wooden crate

On a wooden lathing made of slats with a section of 20x40 mm, the panels are fastened on horizontal joists using tongue-and-groove locks... Why are small nails hammered into the corner of the lock groove. For the accuracy of the work, a metal firing pin is used, which allows you to hammer a carnation to the very head.

On a metal profile

In order to install the panel on a metal profile, you will need the following consumable:

  • SD profile (3m) for racks;
  • UD profile (3mm), guide;
  • straight suspension;
  • additional strips and corners for joints;
  • corrugation (self-extinguishing) for electrical wiring.

Walls under MDF do not require special preparation, unless, if necessary, they are additionally insulated.

The position of sheets (type-setting plates, slats) on the wall is determined.

Implemented marking the wall with a level, self-tapping screws and nylon thread for UD guiding profiles. Areas of open wiring are removed into the corrugation.

A frame is being built from a metal profile under MDF:

  • UD profile is fixed with dowels to the ceiling and floor (wide side to the surface);
  • Suspension under the SD profiles are fixed on the walls with a “quick installation” fastener;
  • SD profiles are attached to the ends of the UD profile of the floor and ceiling; fixed in suspensions with a step of 60 cm; the vertical of the position is verified with a plumb line;
  • additional horizontal profiles are installed using crab joints on vertical posts in places of possible impacts: 60-70 cm from the floor, and between them.

Installation of MDF panels on the frame using clamps and small screws, in the sequence: panel, groove at the end, fastening with screws to the profile. Places of corner joints closed with additional details made of PVC.

First panel additionally fastened with self-tapping screws in places that will be hidden at the end of the work: to the floor (under the baseboard), and to the ceiling (under the decorative cover).

This video is a good example of how you can decorate a wall with MDF panels with your own hands.

Without frame

It is even easier to mount panels without a frame on "liquid nails". The consistency of the glue should provide elasticity of adhesion and filling the unevenness of the wall. For successful adherence to the technology, the instructions on the tube are enough.

Primer - process prerequisite... The glue is applied to the panel pointwise and in a checkerboard pattern.

It is necessary to glue in two stages, after the initial pressing to the wall, the panel is torn off (to weather the glue), and again (after five minutes) it is necessary to glue the panel completely... The whole process is controlled by the building level.

The panels must be cut evenly and accurately to ensure an aesthetic joint at the joints.

To prevent damage the front surface when cutting the slab, it should be placed on the work table with the glossy side up.

For joining in wall corners use an additional element commercially available - special corner for outside or inside corners.

Decorating the walls with MDF panels is not difficult for someone who had experience working with a tool and is not afraid to acquire new skills. The result will delight you and your household.

MDF panels are an excellent decorative finishing material, which is characterized by a high speed of installation and the absence of the need for "wet" work at all stages of finishing.

Panels have their own drawbacks (for example, MDF, like any wood, is afraid of water and high humidity, is less resistant to mechanical damage in comparison with synthetic materials, repairing damage on it is fraught with a number of difficulties, etc.).

The fixing of MDF panels depends on the type of substrate and the desired result. The most common type of fastening is mechanical (on the base, a frame is often equipped with wooden or metal guides, to which MDF panels are attached with nails, screws or clamps) and chemical - using adhesives.

The latter method assumes an even monolithic base, since in this case there is no frame made of profiles or guides.

Adhesive for MDF - an overview of the best options

The most commonly used adhesives for MDF panels are:

  • Liquid Nails . A universal adhesive characterized by high adhesion, corrosion and moisture resistance. Liquid nails do not react with substrates, unlike deep penetrating glue.
  • Mounting (or construction) foam... It is characterized by various properties such as thermal insulation, sound insulation and high adhesion.
  • Universal construction adhesive... A wide group of products, divided into many segments and areas of application. For MDF panels, it is necessary to use only those adhesives that ensure adhesion of the base materials (brick, concrete, drywall, tiles, etc.) and wood (MDF consists of small sawdust).

The most popular glue for MDF panels is liquid nails (TYTAN or TITEBOND Multi).

In addition to the economic effect when choosing an adhesive, it is necessary to take into account the specifics of working with it (time for initial fixation, time of final drying, method of application, service life, required tools and materials, etc.).

Installation of MDF panels on glue - instructions

Consider the technology of MDF installation using the above adhesives.

Liquid Nails(similarly universal building adhesives). The thickness of the adhesive layer is only 3-5 mm, so the base on which the panels will be glued must be perfectly flat. Otherwise, the panels will repeat all the unevenness of the walls or peel off in places where they do not fit snugly.

Therefore, before gluing MDF panels to the wall, it must be leveled.

  1. Degrease the surface, remove all impurities, putty on crumbling areas.
  2. Before starting work, you need to make sure that there are no irregularities using a building rule, a long level or other tool.
  3. The adhesive is applied in a wave-like motion or in some other way (for example, in dotted coarse drops) so that it is evenly distributed over the width and length of the panel. The pitch between the adhesive strips determines the strength with which the panel will hold onto the substrate. That is, for example, when installing in places of greatest stress, the frequency of application can be increased. Usually it is 10-15 cm. If the manufacturer determines the waiting time before gluing, it is necessary to maintain the required pause.
  4. With the help of a construction bubble or laser level, the start panel is installed at the desired angle (depending on the intended drawing and installation direction). The most commonly used vertical installation of panels. You should start from the corner.
  5. The glue on the first panel must have time to grasp the base before installing the subsequent ones (the same principle applies to other difficult junction points, for example, internal or external corners). The setting time depends on the type of adhesive (see instructions).
  6. Thanks to the tongue-and-groove connection, subsequent panels can be mounted without waiting (except for the waiting time before gluing).

The corners (internal or external), as well as horizontal and vertical abutments without a "groove-comb" connection, are closed with decorative moldings (universal corners of MDF). Glue should be applied to the middle of each side of the decorative corner (so that when pressing down, excess glue does not come out).

The main thing is not to damage the decorative layer of the panels.

Option 2. Polyurethane foam.

The technology for installing MDF panels using construction foam is in many ways similar to the technology for installing using liquid nails or universal glue, with the only difference that the error of wall irregularities using foam can be higher due to a significant increase in foam in volume.

The waiting time before gluing the MDF panel to the substrate depends on the requirements of the foam manufacturer.

VIDEO INSTRUCTION

Basic installation errors

For liquid nails:

  • Do not overexpose the glue before mounting the panel on the base. Otherwise, adhesion will be significantly lower.
  • Improper application of glue - MDF panels will lose their attractive appearance if glue gets on the decorative front surface.
  • Wiping off excess adhesive with a heavily damp cloth can cause the decorative coating to peel off.

For polyurethane foam:

  • For gluing, foam with a low shrinkage coefficient and a professional tool should be used (high-quality guns for construction foam can smoothly and strictly dosed regulate its supply).
  • If you do not wait for the setting time of the first panel, then during the movement of the subsequent ones, the foam may collapse and not fix on the base.

The question is why it is impossible to glue MDF on liquid nails

Glue "liquid nails" is distinguished by its versatility. It is suitable for mounting a wide variety of building materials. And if the list of materials to be glued includes "wood", then liquid nails are not only possible, but also must be used for gluing MDF panels.

Often, ordinary people can confuse glue "liquid nails" with sealants or silicones (they are applied using the same tool, the tube is very similar to the tube of liquid nails and in the store they can stand on the same shelf).

However, sealants for gluing MDF panels are not recommended, since their main purpose is to fix sanitary ware and seal joints.

Striker and Claymers

MDF panels are connected by a symmetrical tongue-and-groove lock in the form of a ridge and a corresponding groove. MDF panels can be attached to the wooden crate with small nails, hammering them obliquely into the corner of the groove. They finish off the carnations with a metal striker and a hammer. It looks like a center punch for metal, only at its narrow end, instead of a point, there is a shallow depression along the head of the nail. A nail head can be made from a center punch by removing the point on an emery wheel and carefully drilling a recess on a drilling machine.

For fastening to a metal crate (and to a wooden one when working according to a standard scheme), clamps are used. Claymer - a small metal bracket to the hole for the fastener and the teeth that press the flange of the tongue groove. The glue is inserted into the groove of the MDF panel until it stops, and fixed with a self-tapping screw. Fastening with staples is more expensive and requires a lot of labor, but it is more reliable, and the cladding, if necessary, can be disassembled without damaging the MDF.

Installation of panels

Installation of MDF panels on a crate is much easier than preparatory work:

  • We start from the corner. We cut to size the required number of MDF panels for sheathing the mounting plane to the nearest rack. We go through the corners of the cuts once ("shirk") with sandpaper.
  • On the first panel, we cut off the tongue groove, and fix it in the corner with nails (on a wooden crate) or small self-tapping screws (on a metal one). From the side of the lock groove, we fix it with studs or stamps.
  • Put on the next panel, slide the comb into the groove, fix it along the groove, etc., until the last two panels remain.
  • The last panel is cut to length in size, with a grip of 2-5 mm, depending on which corner or plinth the final finishing will go.
  • Cut the ridge of the last panel in half and round it off.
  • We insert the last two panels into place with a “house”, press until they “snap into place”.
  • Push the last panel all the way onto the penultimate one; fix with self-tapping screws at the free edge.

Note 5:"The last two" is a responsible operation and requires some skills. It is advisable to pre-train on MDF images. If the training "house" gets stuck, you can pry it by the joint with a screwdriver.

Execution of works

Due to their performance characteristics and aesthetic appearance, MDF panels are widely used in finishing works. Wall panels can not only decorate the ceilings of the corridor, the passer-by, but also the original sheathing of the doorway or window slopes. Furniture fittings and wall corners are also easily made from the material at home. Since the product is easy to install, it is quite possible to do all the work with your own hands. Before fixing MDF, you should prepare the surface for finishing, cleaning it from the old coating and eliminating all defects.

Regardless of whether it is planned to clad on concrete, wood or brick, the base must be primed, this will protect the finish in the future from the appearance of mold and mildew.

For additional thermal insulation of window slopes, walls and a doorway, it is recommended to lay insulating material, it will not only serve as a good insulation, but also cope with the task of steam and waterproofing.

To install panels on slopes, they can be fixed along or across, it all depends on the size of the slope. This finish looks original, made from a combination of light and dark pieces of slabs. Installation of panels on walls and ceilings is carried out both on glue and on a pre-assembled frame. To do this, first, the starting profile is attached, and then the guides, along the length of which you need to correctly join the decorative parts. To make a beautiful corner, before installation, you should trim the material, rounding its edges.

It is recommended to saw or cut panels using special tools for working with wood. A jigsaw is considered the best option for this, but if it is not at hand, then a saw with fine teeth will do. Having decided on the direction of the MDF sheathing, the panels are measured and cut to the required length. In this case, at the first plate it is necessary to cut a spike along the entire length, if this is not done, then difficulties will arise when installing the corners.

Lathing

Choosing the method of attaching MDF to the crate, you will first have to make a strong frame from a metal profile or wooden beams

At the same time, it is worth paying attention to the fact that the wooden structure requires preliminary impregnation with antiseptic solutions, which will protect it from rotting and mold. If you plan to lay thermal insulation, then the thickness of the beams is chosen according to the thickness of the insulating material

It is not recommended to use a wooden frame for cladding brick walls and rooms with high humidity.

So that wooden beams do not deform during installation, it is worth choosing a well-dried wood. The structure is fixed perpendicular to the direction of installation of the panels, leaving a small margin of 5 cm from the floor and 3 cm from the ceiling. First of all, they fix the vertical elements that are located at the edges of the recesses, in the corners and next to the openings. The planks should be 700 mm apart from each other. For fastening the structure, self-tapping screws or nails with a diameter of 4 to 6 mm are usually used.

UD racks and horizontal CD profiles are used to assemble the metal structure. The lathing step is similarly 600-700 mm.

The CD profile is inserted into the rack and everything is fixed to the wall with self-tapping screws. Metal profiles can be cut with a special circular saw. If the ceiling is finished with panels, then the frame must be assembled only from horizontal elements, using additional fasteners.

Paneling

After the frame structure is ready, the paneling is started. MDF boards are fixed to each other using a tongue-and-groove lock, consisting of a recess and a ridge. The parts are fastened to the wooden crate with small nails, they are hammered obliquely with a hammer. To install the material on the metal profile, clamps are used, they are placed in the groove of the plate and fixed with self-tapping screws.

When installed vertically, MDF begins to be fixed from the corner, smoothly redirecting to the left side. The first plate is fixed to the timber with nails, and from the side of the groove, fixation is carried out with clamps. Then the ridge of the next plate is placed in the groove of the first one. The last panel should be cut to length, leaving a small margin of 5 mm, and its ridge should be cut in half. It must be inserted into the groove of the previous panel and the free edge must be fixed.

Pieces of wall slabs are used for sheathing the slopes. To beautifully close the skin, special corners are used. They are planted on liquid nails or glue, decorating the edges near doors and windows. In addition, MDF is excellent for finishing the ceiling surface, in this case, the panels are installed in a direction perpendicular to the base of the walls.

how install the panel on the door .

A clear advantage of MDF panels is their ease of installation. It is not necessary to level the door surface before installing the material. But in order for the result of the work to please the eye, and the decorative panels last as long as possible, it is worth entrusting the performance of services for the insulation of the front door by a specialist with considerable experience. This is because independent attempts to install MDF panels can lead to material damage and the appearance of defects on the door surface. Not to mention, the end result of hours of effort can be not only frustrating but also deplorable.

Door cladding with MDF facades is a choice for people who value multifunctional things. Panels made of finely dispersed wood fraction can be painted with acrylic or polyurethane compounds, covered with anti-vandal or PVC foil. All these operations can be carried out both before the installation of panels and after the installation of facades - for example, during the repair of entrance doors. That is, you can make changes to the door design almost at any time.

Bonding panels

Now let's look at how to properly attach mdf panels to the wall using an adhesive for this.

This option is possible if the surface of the walls is perfectly flat and their finishing is reliable enough.

Otherwise, the panels will lag behind the wall along with the plaster or whatever coating is present there. There is nothing difficult in this work, so you will probably cope on your own if you follow the following recommendations and procedure.

First, we study the state of the wall. If any areas have cracks then you need them close up with plaster.

Sealing cracks

In general, the preparation of the wall takes almost more time and effort than the actual installation of panels on the surface. After leveling the wall, go to the primer.

Primer

We use a composition with deep penetration, which will improve the adhesion of the adhesive to the wall surface. For work, we use a regular roller, after which we cover all the walls with a primer. You also need to measure all the walls. This is necessary in order to be able to cut 3D MDF panels of the required parameters.

The cutting process itself can be carried out manually using a hacksaw for metal, but it is best to use a jigsaw.

Jigsaw

On the reverse side, we apply an adhesive composition. Remember that the panel must firmly adhere to the surface, therefore, for the best effect, we apply glue points to the wall itself along the perimeter.

The gluing of the panels is quite simple. We bring the element to the wall, after which we press it for 10-15 seconds. Thus, work is carried out along the entire perimeter of the wall.

The finishing step will be gluing the outer and inner corners. We glue them on the same adhesive that we used when working with MDF panels.

There is an option in which both methods of fixing the panels are combined. For example, many craftsmen glue on a wooden crate using liquid nails or other adhesives. This option has the right to life, especially in the case when further dismantling of the panels may be required.

I would also like to dwell on how fix the plinth to the wall. Many people do not really think about this, attaching them to ordinary liquid nails. But this is not the best option, in our opinion. Better stick them to the wall on special staples resembling hooks.

Fastening the skirting board to special brackets

Their width is 10 cm, and you need to attach them to the wall at a distance of 50 cm from each other. The method of fastening also depends on the material of the wall, therefore, either self-tapping screws or dowels are used.

We take the skirting boards, and then tightly attach them to these corners. The joints are masked with corners, and the cuts are closed with plugs. The skirting boards can be painted in the future, or they can be varnished.

Advantages and disadvantages of MDF panels

The undoubted advantages of MDF panels include not only ease of installation (they can be fixed both vertically and horizontally), but also a beautiful appearance, which, due to a wide variety of colors, allows you to choose panels for almost any interior. In addition, MDF panels are easy to care for, since they do not require special cleaning (you just need to wipe it with a slightly damp cloth). And, of course, MDF panels are relatively cheap finishing materials.

But MDF panels also have disadvantages:

  • Firstly, the walls of such panels, due to the fact that they are attached to the crate, remain hollow.

If you decide to hang something on such a wall, you will have to use special long dowel nails. In addition, MDF panels do not resist the impact of sharp objects (although the damaged finish can be disassembled and the panel can be replaced).

  • Secondly, the wooden lathing under the MDF panels belongs to combustible materials (like the panels themselves), so they cannot be used to decorate escape routes - corridors, staircases, etc. (this rule does not apply to individual houses and apartments).
  • Thirdly, MDF panels do not form a continuous, smooth, even surface (that is, you will always see the grooves at their joints), which imposes certain restrictions on the projected design of the room with their use.
  • Fourthly, if you make a step of the lathing more than the recommended one (45-50 cm), then the panels can begin to "play" under external influence from the room (for example, if you lean on them).

However, even in spite of the shortcomings of MDF panels, they still create competition for drywall, the installation of sheets of which requires much more skills and people (at least two), while you can work with MDF panels alone.

MDF panel ways of fixing to the wall

There are 2 methods to attach the cladding to the rough surface. Each of them has its own characteristics.

Fixation to the frame base. The cladding is attached to a metal or wooden lathing. To do this, you do not need to carry out a thorough leveling of the walls, but you need to make a markup and prepare the material.

Fastening panels with glue. For this, the adhesive solution must meet a number of requirements corresponding to this work. Otherwise, the panels will fall off.

The cladding is attached to:

  • glue solution;
  • liquid Nails;
  • polyurethane foam.

Positive aspects of this method:

  1. Installation time. Put the cladding on a flat surface faster than creating a frame base and then fixing the material.
  2. Self-tapping screws are not needed for fastening.

Disadvantages:

  1. The panels are not attached to the curved surface. It is necessary to make the wall even.
  2. If 1 element is damaged, then the entire surface must be changed.
  3. It is impossible to insulate the wall and hide communications there.

Knowing the features of installation, there is accuracy in choosing the fastening of the cladding.

Wall mounting on wooden lathing

The timber frame is erected in a dry room. For this, processed wood is used.

Advantages:

  • installation is easier than a metal frame;
  • for the frame base, slats of the same section are needed;
  • wood is an environmentally friendly material.

Disadvantages:

  • not mounted in damp rooms;
  • do not use untreated bars;
  • the tree is susceptible to small rodents and bugs.

Despite these disadvantages, well-processed and dried wood serves for a long time without deforming.

Sheathing with a metal profile

The metal crate is made using profiles. They are used to create a frame base in wet rooms, because the profile is covered with an anti-corrosion material.

Advantages of metal construction:

  • you do not need to level the surface to create the frame;
  • all communications are hidden under the metal structure;
  • produce wall insulation;
  • if the panel is damaged, it is possible to replace it without dismantling the entire surface.

Disadvantages of galvanized profile construction:

  1. The area of the room is reduced.
  2. If you need to hang an object on the surface, use anchors that can withstand the load.

To create a profile lathing, additional costs must be incurred.

Wall mounting without lathing and frame with glue

The panels are attached to the glue base only if the surface does not deviate from the level and there are no significant defects.

Advantages of gluing the veneer:

  1. Installation time. The minimum time spent on installing the cladding.
  2. There are no additional costs for fasteners.
  3. The space of the room, corridor is not reduced.

Negative sides:

  • there is no way to hide communications. For wiring, you need to groove the wall;
  • there is no possibility of laying waterproofing insulation;
  • do not use this method in bathrooms due to dampness;
  • in case of damage to one panel, the entire surface must be dismantled.

To choose the method of fixing the panels, you need to calculate everything and take into account external factors, such as humidity, temperature drops.

Preparation for work

Installation diagram of MDF panels.

Installation of panels is carried out mainly using ordinary household tools that are in every home. Of the specific devices, you will need a plumb line that you can make yourself. To do this, simply tie a fishing line or strong thread tightly on the nut. In addition, stock up on a building level, a tape measure and a drill attachment that allows you to screw in self-tapping screws. You will need the latter if you do not have a special screwdriver. You may need a metal square with sides of different thicknesses, it is also called a metal square. You will need it to simplify the cutting of panels for decorating slopes. It is used as follows: the cut is carried out, leaning on a leg of a smaller thickness, and a thicker leg is used as a stop.

You can cut the panels with an electric jigsaw or a hand-held circular saw. If you have to buy these tools, then keep in mind that the cost of a saw with a cutting depth of 12 mm is much higher than the cost of a jigsaw. However, the versatility of the saw should also be considered. When changing blades, it can be used to cut a wide variety of materials. In addition, the saw is compact and easy to use.

Installation of MDF panels

When planning to make an independent wall cladding with MDF panels, you should indicate in advance all the wiring remaining behind the wood material, and also fix the plan for placing the battens of the crate, so that, while decorating the finished wall over time, you do not guess where you need to use a nail or screw.

Important! Before use, MDF panels must be removed from the packaging and left indoors for a day in order to subsequently avoid deformation from temperature drops. ... In order to decorate a room with high quality, you need to know how to properly attach MDF panels to the wall:

In order to decorate a room with high quality, you need to know how to properly attach MDF panels to the wall:

  1. Measure the panel to the desired length and cut with an electric jigsaw.
  2. Attach the first product to the wall, starting from any corner, and, holding, screw it to the crate. Self-tapping screws are screwed into each batten at a distance of 1 centimeter from the edge of the panel.
  3. Install the clip on the MDF sheet from the side of the groove. The protruding part of the kleimer should fit into the groove of the next panel in each row. Such a plate for fastening is fixed with nails on each batten of the batten.
  4. Cut off each MDF plank in stages and connect it with a kleimer on a frame base until the entire wall is filled up to the next corner.
  5. Measure the width on the wall for the last panel. If the size does not coincide with the product, then the MDF canvas is cut according to the proper measurements and only the half of the bar on which there is a spike is installed.
  6. Insert the last plank adjoining the corner, nailing the side that connects to the lathing of the adjoining wall.

By this principle, you can perform independent installation of MDF sheets over the entire area of the room. After finishing the finishing work, you should install the upper and lower skirting boards.

Features and Benefits

MDF for walls is harvested using the same technology, but their surface finish is always different, in this regard, several types of these panels for walls can be distinguished:

  1. Veneered veneers are created using natural veneer as a decorative finish. Products are distinguished not only by excellent durability and reliability, but also by their high price.
  2. Laminated MDF panels are the most popular and demanded of all types of material. To create these panels, melamine film is used. This allows you to imitate the structure of natural wood, which is so popular when decorating the walls of a room. To improve the appearance, the slabs are pasted over with a high-gloss film.
  3. Technical, service rooms, workshops and garages are finished using painted MDF panels. In this case, the decorative coating is a layer of paint. There is no imitation of the tree structure on such models.

MDF panels are distinguished by improved technical characteristics. When creating them, the manufacturer does not use harmful resins rich in phenol content.

After crushing and processing wood chips, the resulting dust is processed under the influence of high temperature in special ovens. The process lasts until the release of lignin, which ensures the adhesion of raw materials.

To give greater strength, the MDF board is pressed, and as an additional treatment, a melamine film is glued to its surface, imitating the structure of natural wood.

The main advantages of the MDF panel are:

  • attractive price;
  • the ability to use both for leveling the surface of the walls, and for decoration;
  • ease of installation without the help of a qualified specialist;
  • strength;
  • reliability;
  • resistance to mechanical damage;
  • ease of care.

There are several ways to fix MDF wall panels in the course of work related to decorating the surface of the walls inside the room. One of them requires the assembly of the frame and lathing, while the other requires special glue for wall panels.

Advantages and disadvantages of MDF panels for wall decoration

MDF is obtained from wood fibers processed at high pressure and temperature, pressed into a board.

Binders and useful additives give MDF special properties and advantages that are indispensable for wall cladding:

  • environmental safety of the material allows you to use it when decorating children's rooms, bedrooms, schools and clinics;
  • ease of installation provides quick repair and the ability to attach panels to the wall with your own hands, some models have a thorn-groove lock connection;
  • slabs are easy to cut, you can cut out any complex shape from them, create combinations of textures and shades, images and patterns on the walls;
  • a huge range of colors and textures, imitation of natural materials: wood, stone, leather, brick;
  • excellent performance of thermal insulation and noise absorption will help make the house more comfortable and reduce heating costs;
  • strength and resistance to mechanical damage and stress;
  • affordable cost. MDF panels are used for interior wall decoration

Disadvantages of the material:

  • low elasticity;
  • in conditions of high humidity, dampness penetrates through the untreated ends of the slab, which deforms and destroys the structure of MDF;
  • fire hazard.

Method one. Installation using lathing

  • recommended in cases where the base surface has strong irregularities that cannot be corrected manually;
  • for rooms with high humidity, it is best to use metal profiles rather than wooden slats as a base for the frame;
  • the method using the lathing is indispensable in cases where additional wall insulation is planned.

The main disadvantage of this option is the need to install the frame, which slightly lengthens the duration of the work. In addition, the frame takes up a certain number of centimeters of free space. Are you ready to put up with such "arbitrariness"? Very often you simply do not have options, because it is far from being possible to achieve the perfect surface every time you need it.

Sheathing device

A very important point is to know how to attach mdf panels to the wall: vertical or horizontal... The nature of the structure of the auxiliary frame directly depends on this.

  • horizontal arrangement of MDF panels - vertical sheathing scheme;
  • vertical arrangement of MDF panels - horizontal lathing scheme.

As you can see, everything is quite simple - you will hardly be able to mix it up! Some points to pay attention to:

  • before installation, you should treat the slats with an antiseptic - this way you will protect the wood from the appearance of microorganisms;
  • the length of the rail should be at least a few millimeters less than the actual distance from the top to the bottom of the structure.

Sequence

  1. no matter what type of frame you are going to design - metal or wooden, in any case, first of all, you need to fix the corner posts, and then the transverse ones and those that will be located in the openings;
  2. a step of 50 centimeters is optimal for all types of lathing;
  3. for fixing narrow and wide metal profiles, it is best to use self-tapping screws, since the so-called dowel-nails are less reliable for this kind of fastening.

The whole process of installing the frame is in the next video.

Fixing panels

  1. cut off the ridge at the first panel and clamp it with the same side to the crate of the adjoining wall;
  2. we fix it to the horizontal slats with self-tapping screws, do not forget to retreat 1 centimeter from the very bottom;
  3. each subsequent panel is inserted in the same way into the groove of the previous one and fixed with nails or clamps;
  4. the most difficult element is the last one: it is cut to the desired size, inserted and fixed on the vertical frame of the frame with self-tapping screws.

A video detailing the key points of the operation is below.

Glue mounting

Before fixing MDF panels to the wall, you must:

  1. Clean the surface of any dirt, dust, remnants of old coating in the form of paint, wallpaper or cracked plaster.
  2. All areas to be restored must be plastered again.
  3. After the mortar has completely dried, prime the wall for maximum adhesion.

Knowing how to fix MDF panels to the wall, you can complete all the work in the shortest possible time. It is necessary that the surface is not only carefully prepared, but also absolutely flat. It is necessary to glue MDF panels on the wall in such a way as to ensure full adhesion and avoid air getting under the constituent structures.

It is necessary to apply glue for MDF wall panels (liquid nails) along the perimeter of the panel, marking both diagonals with longitudinal wide stripes or large drops and placing them in a checkerboard pattern.

If the tile or ceramic tile is glued to the walls in one motion and cannot be dismantled and re-glued, then the peculiarity of the process of gluing MDF panels is that the future cladding cannot be glued immediately. It must be pressed against the wall, held for a few seconds and torn off. Then let the glue dry slightly and re-attach the panel to the wall surface. It is possible to glue MDF only by applying considerable force when pressing the panel.

In case of improper or poor-quality preparation of the wall surface for gluing MDF panels, the fixation will not be strong and durable.

Panels with adhesive on their surface must be laid on a clean, dry, absolutely flat and smooth wall. The quality of the cladding also depends on how correctly the first panel was glued. It must be fixed in strict accordance with the vertical mark made using a plumb bob or laser level.

The final stage is the installation of plugs and other decorative elements. The inner corners are fixed with glue. Its color is matched exactly to the tone of the finishing material and applied with a thin snake, trying to avoid the appearance of excess on the panels after pressing the corner.

You can study in detail all stages of the work by watching the video.

Interior decoration using MDF wall panels is very popular due to the many positive qualities that this finishing material possesses. This is not only an opportunity to perform all the manipulations without the involvement of qualified specialists, but also to increase the strength and reliability of the structure. MDF wall panels allow you to change the interior space of the room, making it attractive and enhancing its aesthetics.

How to install panels

Before installing MDF wall panels, the wall panels must be calculated and purchased in the required quantity. Determining how much material is required is quite simple. To do this, it is enough to calculate the surface area that will be veneered, and add 15% in reserve.

Installation diagram of a suspended ceiling made of PVC panels.

Inspect the area before starting work. If it has ever damp, the wall covering is swollen or cracked, the plaster has noticeable irregularities or is less than 1.2 cm thick, then careful surface preparation must be done. To do this, you need to completely clean the main wall from plaster and remove the baseboards.

There are 2 ways to mount MDF. The first one implies the device of the lathing on which the panels will be attached, and for the second one will require special galvanized profiles.

It is easier to install wooden lathing than to install profiles.

Scheme of additional profiles.

It will require less hardware for fasteners, but its cost is higher than the cost of profiles. When making a wooden lathing, slats or slabs must be soaked in a special antifungal composition, and also treated with materials that will protect them from rot and mold.

It is not recommended to use the crate in brick houses and in damp rooms, since ideal conditions are created for pests in the space between the wall and the cladding. you will not notice that the finish is damaged until the mold or mildew has come out, and when it does, it has already spread widely. Harmful particles can enter the battens through the pores of the brick.

To make a metal frame, you need U-shaped profiles: guides and ordinary (UD and CD, respectively). The main difference between the two is their cross-sectional configuration.

Features of the

MDF is a unique building material produced in the form of panels from medium-density fiberboard. Since the boards are produced by dry pressing of wood shavings under high temperature and pressure with the addition of urea resin, they are extremely strong and durable in operation.

Decorative finishing with such panels has many advantages.

  • Simple installation. The material can be fastened in any direction: diagonally, across or along the wall surface. In addition, to install the panels, you do not need to carefully prepare the working base. The condition of the walls does not in any way affect the quality of the cladding.
  • Aesthetic look. A huge assortment of color palettes and textures allows you to use MDF for any style. In addition, during installation, a small space is left between the slabs and the base of the walls, which can be used to hide the insulation and wiring.
  • Good thermal insulation. The material is characterized by excellent heat retention, therefore, after fixing MDF, the room acquires additional insulation.
  • Easy care. To clean the panels from dust and dirt, just wipe them with a soft sponge dipped in warm water. If damage appears during operation, then there is no need to completely change the skin. For this, a panel with defects is removed and a new one is attached in its place.
  • Durability. Such cladding will reliably serve for more than a dozen years.

Despite the presence of positive characteristics, MDF also has some disadvantages.

  • Low moisture resistance. The material is subject to deformation under the influence of moisture. Therefore, for finishing rooms with high humidity, it is recommended to use special boards with a protective layer.
  • Immunity to mechanical damage and stress. Decorative panels need careful installation and maintenance.
  • High risk of fire. Electrical wiring that is laid under the trim must fit into the fire resistance of the box.
  • The formation of hollow walls. Since MDF is fixed to the frame, a "void" is obtained between the cladding, therefore, when you need to fix furniture on the walls, you have to use long nails or dowels.

Before purchasing facing plates, it is important to consider that they are produced in different sizes, depending on the model range of each brand. ...

As a rule, products with a thickness of 7 mm to 14 mm and dimensions of 2600 × 200 mm, 2600 × 153 mm, 2600 × 325 mm are most often found on the market. Wall blocks are usually attached to glue or lathing made of wooden beams and metal profiles. At the same time, the installation of plates on a wooden frame is made much easier, but before starting the installation, the wood should be covered with antiseptic solutions, which protect it from the formation of mold and mildew.

Today MDF boards are widely used in various fields. They are used for sheathing walls, door leaves, window sills, ceilings, and also for making screens for heating and ventilation systems and arches from the material. Such a finish looks gorgeous in a modern interior, as the panels imitate not only expensive wood species, but also natural stone.

Installation of MDF panels on the frame

When the frame is ready, and the communications are divorced and hidden properly, we begin the most important process - the installation of panels.

This work begins with the preparation of the panels themselves. With the help of measuring tools, markings are made, along which a cut is made using a jigsaw or an ordinary hacksaw.

It is important to remember that:

  1. The first MDF panel must be mounted on a level for perfect horizontal or vertical, otherwise the cladding and installation of other, subsequent elements will be crooked and uneven.
  2. The starter panels are installed with spikes in the corners and fastened with self-tapping screws. When using a metal frame, the clamps are fixed with small self-tapping screws with a small head.
  3. The tenon of each new panel is closely fitted to the groove of the already mounted one. Next, it is important to adjust the position of the panel using a level.
  4. Thus, the paneling is carried out to the end of the surface. It is recommended to fix the final panel with self-tapping screws. We will hide them in the future with decorative corners.

Detailed instructions for installing decorative MDF panels with your own hands

To install decorative MDF panels on metal doors, you will need to stock up on all the necessary tools and materials. Everyone is able to independently cope with such work, since it is quite simple and interesting. It consists of several sequential stages:

  1. Preparation of tools and materials.
  2. Taking measurements from the door, constructing a sketch of the work and purchasing a suitable MDF lining.
  3. Installation of the panel on a metal door.

Installing the pad with your own hands is quite simple.

Mounting options for MDF panels

Basically, do-it-yourself wall cladding with MDF panels has several mounting methods:

  • on a frame base made of wood or metal;
  • using an adhesive mass.

Wooden base for fixing the panels

It is not difficult to build a structure made of wood, on which MDF slabs will be fixed. Such a frame device is installed in rooms with low humidity. The crate is fastened, as a rule, with self-tapping screws or dowels.

Attention! Before work, a wooden product must be treated with an antiseptic intended for such a material. ... In order to build a base for wood panels, you must:

In order to build a base for wood panels, you must:

  1. Measure the location to secure the starter plank. To do this, find the most convex point on the wall and align all other slats from it. A wooden support is placed relative to the length of the MDF boards, always perpendicular.
  2. Using a drill, mark holes for self-tapping screws on a wood strip. The distance between the holes should be 50 centimeters.
  3. Make marks for the dowels according to the holes on the rail. For this, the strip is horizontally attached to the finishing surface and leveled with a building level.
  4. Punch holes in the places indicated on the wall with a puncher and set the plastic fixing dowels.
  5. Attach the main rail with self-tapping screws, screwing them into the plastic sockets. In the process of joining, level the bar along the entire length with a level. If necessary, in places with deviations, wooden pegs are placed under the bar. A correctly aligned rail is screwed to the wall until it stops.
  6. Fix the subsequent planks in the same way over the entire surface, based on the first fixed support. The distance between the bars should not exceed 50 centimeters. Reiki that clings to an adjacent wall must be a continuation of the horizontal line of each already fixed wooden strip.
  7. Install vertical supports in the corners using plumb lines. With such strips, it is necessary to circle all the boundaries of window and door openings.

Metal profile lathing

The metal frame is mounted in the same way as the wooden one. To install it, you will need a special profile - narrow (guide) and wide - as well as fasteners for connection. The metal crate is fastened with self-tapping screws.

Bonding profiles

First, a wide profile is placed in the openings and in the corners. Narrow racks connect it to the floor and ceiling. A distance of 60 centimeters is set between the horizontal strips.

All elements of such a crate are fastened together with short self-tapping screws.

Advice! Before facing the surface, the space in the crate can be filled with insulation.

The metal frame is built in voluminous rooms, because such a base for cladding significantly reduces the area of the room.

Lathing from metal profiles

Fastening panels with adhesive solution

This installation option is very simple and fast. First of all, you should choose the glue wisely. The structure of the adhesive mass must be thick and elastic.

Mounting MDF panels on the wall can be done by hand by performing the following steps:

  • clean the surface;
  • soak with a primer, leaving to dry completely;
  • apply glue to the MDF board with copious drops;
  • attach the sheathing product to the wall and press well for a firm grip for 5 minutes;

Do-it-yourself installation of panels on glue installation features

Installation of MDF panels on walls using glue is much easier - the entire installation process is greatly facilitated by the absence of a metal or wooden frame, the construction of which takes a lot of time.

Installation of wall panels mdf photo

Before proceeding with the direct fastening of the panels, first we will deal with the glue that is used for these purposes. Or what kind of glue is not suitable here - you need a composition that has certain qualities.

  • Firstly, the glue must be plastic even after hardening - the fact is that MDF panels made of pressed cardboard are highly susceptible to deformation depending on the temperature and humidity in the room. Therefore, an adhesive is needed that can extinguish these very thermal expansions.
  • Secondly, the glue used for MDF panels should facilitate their fastening even in places where the walls are slightly curved. That is, the texture of the glue should make it possible to spread it both with a thin layer and with a thick one - in a word, it should be thick enough. The so-called "liquid nails", which are successfully used to resolve the issue of how to mount MDF panels, by almost all craftsmen, fall under these requirements as well as possible.

Liquid nails for mounting MDF panels photo

The very installation of panels with the help of glue looks quite simple - its technology is almost completely described on a tube with Liquid Nails glue. It is not recommended to violate it. To begin with, the walls covered with panels must be cleaned of dust and dirt - in principle, if you are going to seriously engage in self-repair, then the priming process, which is performed to clean the walls from dust and dirt, and at the same time to improve the adhesion of materials, should enter your a habit. Primer always, everything and everywhere.

Priming the walls before installing the MDF panels photo

After the primer has dried, proceed to the direct gluing of the panels. In the meantime, it dries, you can do other preparations - for example, cut several dozen panels to size.

The glue is applied directly to the panel itself in a dotted manner and in a checkerboard pattern - the glue drops should be large. After the glue has been applied, the panel is pressed against the wall, taps firmly and comes off. This is required by the technology of gluing - you need to tear off the panel so that the glue is weathered and the panel does not peel off the wall under its own weight. To speed up the process and make the installation of MDF panels with your own hands faster, you can immediately, one after another, smear up to a dozen panels, attach them to the wall and tear them off. While the glue is weathered, it is allowed to smoke - after five minutes, the panels can be reattached to the wall and thoroughly slammed.

How to glue mdf panels on a photo wall

It is easy to glue the panels - it is much more difficult to cut them evenly and with high quality

In this regard, special attention should be paid to slopes and similar obstacles that come across in the path of installing MDF panels. It should be understood that the appearance of the room depends entirely on the even trimming of the panels.

Installation of mdf panels on walls

Well, in conclusion, let's dwell on the main nuances of installation, which are characteristic of both methods of fixing MDF panels.

  • First, there are the corners. It should be understood that it will not work to bend the MDF panels, so they are simply trimmed as close as possible to the corner, after which the cut edges are safely overlapped with a special corner, which can be used for both outer and inner corners.
  • Secondly, this is a frame - the lowest horizontal profile should lie on the floor. In this way, you will ensure that the skirting boards are securely fastened.
  • Thirdly, so that there is no distortion in the future, the first panel must be installed in accordance with the vertical level and firmly fixed with self-tapping screws in places where they subsequently overlap (at the bottom with a plinth, at the top of the ceiling, in the corner with a decorative overlay). It is advisable to check the position of the panels with the level in the future - you should not control everything in a row, but you need to apply it to every fifth panel.

That's basically it. This is how MDF panels are installed. This process is not difficult and not simple, as, in general, any finishing work, in which your attitude to the little things plays an important role, which together affect the overall picture of the repair. Simply put, there are no trifles in this matter.

Cooking the surface

You can start preparing the surface only when it is pre-dried (of course, if such a measure is required, and the wall in the room is wet)

We have highlighted earlier why this is important. The main thing is not to carry out facing work on top of a damp wall under any circumstances.

The process of preparing the walls itself consists of the following simple steps:

  • Cleaning the wall. When the surface is covered with wallpaper, it is important to remove them, because in a confined space, old wallpaper will become a very attractive environment for the appearance and reproduction of fungi and mold, and sometimes insect pests. If the wallpaper is glued well enough, you will first have to wet it or steam it with the same clothes iron, then removing it will not be difficult if you use an ordinary spatula. In rare cases, it may be necessary to use a special composition that will help get rid of the wallpaper layer. In the case when the wall is plastered or well painted with water-based paints, cleaning work can be skipped.

  • Surface treatment. In cases where your wall has already been attacked by mold or other types of fungi, or maybe insects, it is recommended to thoroughly process it. It is desirable to use compositions such as "anti-mildew" or "whiteness". Before the treatment process, you can scrape the surface with a spatula. After applying antiseptics and medicinal compounds on the wall, it is recommended to walk again with a spatula, then repeat the processing process. The ideal option would be when the affected surface is cleaned to the ground: all traces of fungi or insect activity are completely removed.

It is important to understand that such work is best done when using personal protective equipment such as respirators or masks. Indeed, in the case of unintentional inhalation of plaster particles or suspensions affected by the fungus, unpleasant health consequences can be obtained.

  • Crack treatment. If, after removing the wallpaper layer or poorly applied plaster, cracks are found on the surfaces, it is recommended to carry out work to eliminate them. This procedure is especially important if it is planned to place heat-insulating or sound-insulating materials under the MDF panels. It is important to understand that unsealed cracks can become "bridges" for cold access to the room, where factors favorable for mold formation are created, such as dampness, darkness. In order for the layer of plaster or putty to hold well, it is recommended to slightly widen the crack and deepen it if possible. Next, you should get rid of traces of old plaster and use a deep penetration primer to treat the crack. After the primer is dry, the cracks are repaired with putty or plaster. It is important to fill the crack to its full depth.

  • Primer application. When the first three steps are completed, you should start priming the entire surface. It is important to select soil formulations so that they contain antiseptics. Such a choice will help prevent the formation of mold, fungi and protect insects from settling under the panels. In the case of cladding wooden walls, it is necessary to select a soil, which also includes special fire retardants. They are designed to increase resistance to fire effects. It is important to remember that the application of the primer is carried out in two or three layers, each previous one must dry thoroughly before applying the next.
  • Installation of insulation. We go through this stage if the MDF installation is carried out on the crate. Penofol is ideal for this purpose; it is usually glued to a primed surface.

Fastening MDF panels to the wall

The process of installing cellulose fiber panels is relatively simple and straightforward even for a beginner. If the horizontal laying method is used, then the bottom panel or lamella is installed first, directly resting on the starting plate of the frame. It must be laid on glue, aligned to the building level and fixed with a stapler or self-tapping screw.

Before laying the next panel on the wall, it is necessary to install the corner or edge cladding elements, fix them on the wall, and only then proceed with the installation of the following MDF parts.

How to attach mdf panels to a bar or profile is selected in each case individually, based on the conditions of the fastener and the size of the material. Relatively thin, 6-9 mm lamellas are snapped in with groove-thorn locks, after which the free end is sewn to the timber with self-tapping brackets. If it is assumed that it will be possible to periodically remove the MDF cladding from the wall for revising communications or wiring laid behind the decorative trim, then the panels are placed on clamps.

Thick slabs are mounted directly on the walls using glue and dowels, sealed with acrylic filler and further gluing wallpaper or PVC foil.

A difficult option, how to mount MDF on walls with insulation

MDF boards are much easier and more convenient to handle than heavy drywall, plywood or plastic, while the strength of the panels is enough to build two or even three-layer cladding options from fiber composite with insulation as an intermediate layer.

For example, cold external walls made of profile, siding or concrete blocks are hemmed from the inside with HDF class MDF plates, with a density of 800-1800 kg / m3. The thickness of the slabs is 25-40 mm. The laid panels are sewn at the joints with oblique self-tapping screws and stapling staples, the seam itself is rubbed over with polymer mastic.

The material is treated with impregnation, which provides good vapor transmission with high resistance to surface condensation. Plates are fixed to external walls "cold" - with the help of steel dowels and carpentry screws. On the inside of the slab sheathing, wooden or slats cut from the slabs are sewn.

A vapor membrane is pulled over the laid thermal insulation and clogged with horizontal slats with a section of 20x20 mm. The last step is to sew lightweight decorative MDF panels of the LDF class with the texture of wood, natural stone or veneered on the battens.

Due to the low density LDF, 200-600 kg / m3, MDF panels perfectly allow steam to pass, which is removed through the ventilation gap and the ceiling ventilation joint. In this way, walls are sheathed in summer kitchens, balconies, verandas, any rooms with frame-type walls.

Features of finishing MDF - panels

Most professional finishers prefer to work with MDF, since there is no dust and dirt, as in the case of drywall, installation is faster and there are much fewer problems.

Assembling and installing MDF on walls is in many ways similar to laying laminate floors, with the only difference that there are more opportunities for choosing schemes for decorating a room and a much more complex arrangement of corner and slope wall sectors.

Slopes

The scheme for arranging door or window slopes is no different from plasterboard options. If the lamellas were laid vertically on the walls, then to design a window or door opening, it is enough to cut a panel of the required height and width and stick it on the slope plane with mounting foam or sealant.

If the walls in the protection room are horizontal panels, then the slopes will have to be recruited from sections on self-tapping screws and plastic plugs.

Corners and slots

There are always gaps and gaps between the installed additional elements and the main part of the cladding. They have to be removed with special decorative corner strips and decorative skirting boards.

All auxiliary decor is glued on "Titanium" or "Mounting moment for MDF", a small amount of glue is applied to the edge along the gap, after which a corner strip is installed on the joint. To prevent the decor from moving away, the corner is temporarily fixed with tape.

Sockets and switches

Every room has at least a couple of outlets and one switch. In order not to dismantle them during the installation of MDF, proceed as follows: measure the coordinates of the location of the outlet on the wall, after which a hole of the appropriate shape and size is cut out with a circular drill or jigsaw. When installing the MDF panel, the size and position of the hole is specified and cut with a sharp knife.

It remains to install the panel, fix it on the wall, and close the remaining gap with a decorative frame.

The cost of installing MDF panels on walls will depend on the choice of materials.

MDF is a common, cost effective and versatile material. It is often used as a decoration inside a building. Having picked up a product, it is not necessary to seek help from specialists. It is not difficult to carry out installation work with your own hands. You just need to figure out how to independently fix MDF panels to the wall?

Organization of finishing works

Wall cladding requires proper preparation, which includes:

  1. Calculation of the amount of required material. An easy way to find out the volume for the purchase of MDF panels is to use the online calculator. To the obtained data, it is necessary to add about ten percent in reserve. With simple architectural structures of the walls, the calculation can be made independently.
  2. Selection of the tool. For wall cladding with MDF panels, you first need to stock up on: a level for construction work, a tape measure, a pencil and a hammer. In the process, you will need: an electric jigsaw, a puncher, a fine-toothed hacksaw and a special stapler.
  3. Surface preparation. Previously, the entire area is thoroughly impregnated with a primer, which protects against fungal deposits and mold. If MDF sheets are attached with glue, then, first of all, the wall is cleaned of unnecessary paint and remnants of old finishes.

Important! Cover the surface with primer generously. Sometimes a two-layer impregnation is used. After processing, it is necessary to let the walls dry completely.

Mounting options for MDF panels

Basically, do-it-yourself wall cladding with MDF panels has several mounting methods:

  • on a frame base made of wood or metal;

A wooden slatted frame for self-cladding of walls with MDF panels is considered the easiest way to fix it on an uneven surface.

  • clean the surface;
  • soak with a primer, leaving to dry completely;
  • apply glue to the MDF board with copious drops;
  • attach the sheathing product to the wall and press well for a firm grip for 5 minutes;

All work with the adhesive must be done carefully and accurately.

To hide all the joints at the corners and between the canvas, special decorative strips and corners are used. Such parts are attached with liquid nails.

By this principle, you can perform independent installation of MDF sheets over the entire area of the room. After finishing the finishing work, you should install the upper and lower skirting boards.

Conclusion

Products from MDF for wall decoration do not contain harmful substances. With this finish, you can keep the warmth in the house. The products are characterized by good sound insulation and high durability. Only wet cleaning is required for the upholstery maintenance.

Today canvases are produced in various colors with a variety of textures. Having chosen the material, it is not necessary to seek professional help for installation. Guided by step-by-step descriptions of the work, you can qualitatively perform the installation of MDF panels on the wall with your own hands.

Fastening MDF panels to the wall is a process that is not difficult if you know all the features of the technology. I will tell you how to cope with the work with a minimum investment of time and money, both options have been repeatedly tested by me in practice, which makes it possible to assert with confidence that any developer can handle MDF. It is important to follow all the recommendations below and have a set of necessary tools and accessories on hand.

Panel mounting methods

Let us analyze what methods of attaching MDF panels to the wall are, there are only two of them:

  • Sheathing device, which can be both wooden and metal, below we will analyze both options;
  • Bonding panels- it is important to choose a high-quality composition and properly prepare the base.

If you do not know which option to choose, then you need to familiarize yourself with the advantages of each of the solutions:

  • When constructing the lathing, the condition of the walls and their plane do not matter, because you will be constructing, which will set the position of the future surface;
  • For wet rooms, a frame made of a metal profile is more suitable, since it does not change its parameters with changes in humidity and is much more slowly damaged by water;
  • If it is necessary to lay insulation under the finish, then the crate will be an ideal design option, it is very convenient to put any heat-insulating material under it;

  • Bonding is ideal for places where you want to save as much space as possible. The elements are glued directly to the wall, and this finish does not reduce the usable area. In this case, the condition of the surface is of great importance - it is impossible to glue the panels anywhere.

Method number 1 - the construction of the lathing

Let's figure out how to fix MDF panels to the wall using a special frame, which is made either from wood or from a profile. Let's start by looking at a more budgetary and affordable option using a block of wood.

The workflow looks like this:

  • First of all, you need to buy a bar from which the crate will be built, most often a pine version with a section of at least 30x30 mm is used, since the structure must be strong. When choosing a specific option, pay attention to such indicators as humidity (it should not be higher than 15%) and geometric parameters - the elements should be even, deformations should not exceed a few millimeters per linear meter;
  • Then you need to process the wood with a fire retardant composition. This is necessary in order to prevent damage to the material by mold and wood borers, as well as to increase the resistance of the bar to fire. The work is done with a simple brush, all the features of the process will be prompted by the instructions, which are mandatory on the packaging;

  • Next, you need to take measurements using a tape measure, the length of the bars should be a few millimeters less than the distance between the walls or from floor to ceiling, otherwise you will have to squeeze in the elements. It is important not to confuse anything so as not to spoil the material, and this often happens if measurements are inattentive;

Important!
If the MDF panels will be located horizontally, then the crate should be vertical.
And vice versa - for the vertical arrangement of the panels, you need to make a horizontal frame.
You must know in advance how the finishing will be done.

  • The dimensions are carefully marked on the block, after which the elements are cut into pieces of the required length. When cutting, pay special attention to the correct location of the hacksaw, it should be located perpendicular to the bar, often inexperienced craftsmen cut the material at random and all ends are curves;

  • The fixing of the bars is done either using quick-assembly dowels (when you have a concrete or brick base), or using self-tapping screws (if you have wood walls). When working, constantly monitor the position of the elements so that the plane is flat. It is best to check both each individual bar and several already fixed racks, and do this in different positions of the level in order to definitely prevent flaws;

  • If you decide to additionally insulate the surface, then this should be done after the construction of the frame. For work, it is best to use rolled mineral wool, which is easy to cut and with which it is very convenient to work, just fill the space with it so that it stands tightly, after which you can proceed to the next stage of work;

  • The panels can be fastened in three ways, and the first of them is the use of clamps, this is the name of a special fastener, which is a bracket. The second option is thin self-tapping screws 3x20 mm, which are twisted into a groove or a thorn, and the third is thin finishing nails with a reduced head. Choose the solution that is more convenient for you personally, it is easiest for me to use carnations, work with them goes much faster;

  • The inner and outer corners and connecting strips, if any, are attached last. The easiest way is to glue these elements, even small finishing studs will be visible, and with the help of glue, you can achieve the perfect appearance.

As for the option with a metal frame, it is suitable for rooms with fluctuations in humidity, since the galvanized profile perfectly tolerates adverse effects and does not deform over time.

Let's figure out how to fix MDF wall panels to a structure made of metal profiles:

  • To get started, you need to purchase the required amount of the main and wall profile. Wall elements are placed around the perimeter and define the plane of the future surface, and the main ones bear the load and hold the entire structure;
  • Work begins with fixing the wall profile, for this a line is drawn around the perimeter and the elements are fastened to the walls, floor and ceiling. For work, either dowels or self-tapping screws are used, it all depends on the bases on which the installation is carried out;

  • Then the lines are marked along which the main profile will be located, it should stand at a distance of 40-50 cm. Direct suspensions are attached along the lines, which will help level the surface, as well as strengthen it and make it resistant to loads. With the help of these elements, the alignment process will take place very quickly and very efficiently;

  • Further, the main profiles are inserted into the resulting structure, the direction of the lathing depends on how the final coating will be located, we discussed this aspect above. The profiles are fastened to each other using small self-tapping screws, which are called bugs or seeds among builders;
  • The hangers are bent to the profile, after which, using the level, the correct position is determined in which the elements are fastened. The excess ends are simply bent outward so as not to interfere with further work, it makes no sense to cut off all the ends, and this process takes too much time;

  • Let's figure out how to fix MDF wall panels to a metal frame. For work, kleimers are used, which are screwed to the profile using all the same seeds - small screws. The work is best done using a screwdriver with a magnetic attachment, so you will lose much less fasteners;

  • The last step is the same as in the case of a wooden frame: you need to glue all the decorative elements and put the baseboards.

Method number 2 - gluing panels

Fastening MDF panels to a wall without lathing will be an excellent option where the walls are even, and the finish on them is reliable, because you have to glue the elements, and if the base is weak, then they can simply fall off after a certain period of time.

Let's figure out how the work is done with our own hands, there is nothing complicated in the process, the main thing is to follow a few simple recommendations and use only high-quality materials.

The sequence of operations is as follows:

  • First you need to check the base for damage and unreliable areas, if any, then they need to be repaired. All problems must be eliminated in advance, the better the plane is prepared and the fewer flaws on it, the more attractive the final result will be. Sometimes you have to spend more time leveling the base than on the main work;
  • Then the surface is treated with a deep penetration primer. This is necessary in order to strengthen the base and improve the adhesion of the adhesive to the surface. The composition is applied with a roller or a brush, it is important to cover the entire wall evenly, but you should not allow smudges either;

  • Next, the material is prepared - MDF panels, if necessary, the elements are cut into pieces of the desired size, cutting is done using a hacksaw for metal or an electric jigsaw, it is important to accurately measure and carefully cut the plates;
  • On the reverse side, an adhesive composition is applied, you can make points on the surface, you can apply a rim around the perimeter and points in the middle, the main thing is that there are many places for gluing;

  • The element is gently pressed against the wall and fixed in this position for a few seconds. Work continues until the entire surface is covered;
  • The corners and connecting strips are glued last, for this, the same composition is used as for the main coating. Most often, liquid nails are used - their price is affordable, and the quality meets the highest standards.

Important!
Sometimes a combined method is used, when MDF panels are glued to a wooden crate.
This option is good when you need to insulate the surface or in cases where you may later need to dismantle the coating.

What you need to work

Naturally, you will need a certain set of tools, I will list what should be at hand without fail:

Hacksaws If you glue the panels, then you only need a hacksaw with a fine tooth, and the metal option is also suitable. But if you will make a frame made of wood, then you need another hacksaw with a larger size of teeth.
Measuring tool First of all, you need to have on hand a tape measure, a building level and a pencil for marking. In order for the ends to be perfectly flat, you need to additionally purchase a square, which will simplify the work and allow you to draw corners
Screwdriver and hammer drill If you use self-tapping screws, then you cannot do without this power tool. And to fix the dowels, a more powerful option is needed - a hammer drill with a drill of the required diameter
Glue gun It is needed if you will glue elements. The device costs a little, but it is much more convenient to work with it.

If you do not have the same punch or screwdriver, then there is no point in purchasing them for a couple of hours of work. Borrow a tool from a friend or rent it, it will be much cheaper.

It is best to cut corners from MDF not with a hacksaw, but with a sharp construction knife, so the result will be much better, and the ends are much neater and smoother, the main thing is that the blade is sharp and hard and does not bend when pressed.

Output

In my subjective opinion, the work on fixing MDF is one of the simplest and easiest, you just need to do it once, in order to subsequently quickly and efficiently produce the facing of both walls and ceilings. The video in this article will give you additional information on the topic, as well as clearly show some important points of the workflow.
