I wanted this post to maybe help someone save a little time if they ever need to replace a fence that has wooden posts that are set in concrete and don't want to have to dig them out by hand.
Here's the story.
My most aging street neighbor asked me if I would like to replace about ten foot sections from her old cedar fence and update it in the same style her neighbor just installed. Of course I said yes.
Now, in truth, I am a bummer and work for him. I wanted to find a way to raise the old pillars that are dug into the ground, into concrete, without resorting to digging them out of the ground with a shovel, and thus breaking too much sweat in the process. I wanted to be able to reuse the holes for new posts, too, so the pulls of their activity was out of the question, as this could lengthen the holes.
After washing the Internet and finding ways to pull posts to leave a huge hole, to go back and dug again, or "hold my beer" hoks like an idea with tools, I didn't have such as a tractor or a truck, a wheel rim, or a chain, or explosives, I decided that there was nothing "out there" in Beatland just enough to satisfy my needs. So, I came up with the following idea. I like it because you can pull out the post from one side, so you don't need anyone to hold you beer for you, and then after you've finished pulling the posts, you can dismantle the device and use the parts as new posts when rebuilding a new fence , and using the same holes. Step 1: collect some simple materials
For my / your post, pullers, you will need
- Treated 2 4 ″ x 4 ″ x 10 ′ lumber posts
- 2 4 ″ x 4 ″ x 1 ′ sawn timber pieces
- Twenty feet or so reserve parachute cord, twine, rope, wire, whatever
- 1 two feet iron spike or reinforcement (found in home improvement centers. I used 3/4 ″ spike diameter)
- Drill

Step 2: create your one-handed post puller
What you want to do is lash two long 4x4s together, sandwiching the two small pieces together as shown. tie as tight as possible, not a big problem. During use, no ropes (paracord) are applied. The cord is just there to hold the smaller pieces of timber between the long ones, so that they act like laying wedges.
Then you want to drill a hole large enough for your spike (in my case, 3/4 ″) through the end of one of the long 4x4s. Then do the same on the other side. Measure, if you need to, I am not as I am quite experienced by eye / hand. You want the holes to line up so you can press the tenon as shown with little or no resistance.

Step 3: install the puller to the old post
Now you need to drill a hole into the existing post that you want to pull. How high the material depends on your support. In my case, it was about 15 inches off the ground.
Insert the minus spike puller up to the old post, aligning the holes, and push the spike through the three 4 x 4s as shown.
Now you will need your fulcrum.
Step 4: add your supports
Place your fulcrum, in my case an old cinder block and step, as close to the post as possible, without covering any of the concrete that the post is on. Just take the supports up to the edge of the concrete as shown in the picture.
Step 5: Pull out the EP Post!
Walk at the far end of your post puller, and with one hand hold your drink of choice, use your other hand to push down on the handle lever. See how easy it is?

Recently, when the snow melted and the ground began to dry up, I ran into one small problem. It consisted in the fact that at the very exit from the garden, next to the gate, a small bump emerged from the ground. Moreover, the further, the higher it became and gradually began to interfere with the passage, and even later, the lower edge of the gate began to cling to it when opening.
When I dug this bump with a shovel, it turned out that it was a wooden stump, or rather, the base of an old wooden pillar, apparently preserved from the time of the old wooden fence. Moreover, over the past few years, this stump did not show any signs of life, but this spring, for some reason, it began to actively crawl out of the ground.

Naturally, there was nothing left to do but uproot this stump.
And I decided to do this, which is called "little blood" and did not dig a large hole around the stump, but simply knocked on it with a sledgehammer, loosening it from side to side.
And then, I tried to pull out this stump with a crowbar.
However, that was not the case. It turned out that the tree stump sits fairly firmly in the ground. But most importantly, it seemed to me that when pulling out with a crowbar, when the crowbar picks up the stump from only one side, it warps, which, in fact, makes it very difficult to pull it out. Moreover, this stump is quite long and sits deep enough, at least 60-70 cm.
As a result, it became obvious that in order to uproot this hemp with a crowbar, you need to dig a deeper hole around it (about 30-40 centimeters deep). However, I really did not want to do this, since the ground around the stump is very strongly rammed, and besides, there is a lot of stones and fragments of bricks that were poured and rammed when installing a wooden post.
And then another idea came to me. It seemed to me that if you make some kind of powerful metal hook and hammer it into this stump, then applying a vertical force with a crowbar exactly in the center of the hemp, it can be easily pulled out.
As a result, I rummaged through the old pieces of iron and found just such an ancient doorknob. Moreover, this handle is very old, possibly as far back as the 19th century, since it is forged and quite strong.
Materials and tools for making a simple fixture
This is what I decided to use to pull out the hemp, especially since this handle just fits the diameter of the stump.
In addition to the pen, I needed the following tools and materials:
- Two long wood screws.
- Cordless screwdriver.
- Screwdriver bit PH2, for driving screws into a stump.
The process of pulling out the stump
So, I put the doorknob on top of the end of the stump and screwed it in with two screws.
I must say that the wood of the stump is rotten on the outside and to a depth of several centimeters, but inside, it is still quite strong. Therefore, be sure to use long screws. In addition, in order for the screws to withstand a large force, their diameter must be at least 4.5-5 mm.
After that, I tugged at the handle, finding out that it was holding on quite firmly.
Well, now, it remains only to gently pry the stump by the handle with a crowbar and pull it out.
Indeed, I began to slowly pull the stump with a crowbar, applying an effort exactly in the center of the stump.
As the stump was pulled out, I placed bricks under the other end of the crowbar. Well, in the last stages, I finally pulled the stump out of the hole with my hand.
That's all! This is what a pulled stump looks like.
And it took me to pull out the stump in this way, literally half a minute.
Moreover, I did not immediately remove the handle from the stump, but just holding it by the handle, took it to the fire, which turned out to be very convenient.
And already at the fireplace, he unscrewed the handle.
In such a simple way, with the help of a simple tool, whipped up, I managed to quickly and easily uproot a wooden stump from the post and at the same time significantly save time and effort.
