Prayer rules were not invented overnight. Sometimes they were created by holy elders at the request of the laity, while others appeared in connection with various church rituals. Be that as it may, but every Orthodox believer must adhere to a certain regulation that allows him to cleanse himself as much as possible from everything worldly and vain in order to open his heart to his Creator.

There are cases when they were even called sorcerers, but all their actions were only with the blessing of God.

  • Service. The whole life of the Optina elders was aimed at serving the Creator and the people. For them there was no concept of fatigue; everyone in need of help received it from the monks.
  • Repentance for the sins of others. The fact is that the Optina elders bore a vow of repentance for all Orthodox Christians in this world. Three folded fingers mean our faith in God, worshiped in the Trinity, and two fingers - faith in Jesus Christ as true God and true Man. Then we bow down. Bows are belt and earth. The bow is the bowing of the upper body forward after the sign of the cross. With an earthly bow, the believer kneels, bending over, touches the floor with his forehead and then stands up.

Learning that in Palestine, there is a great "prophet and miracle worker" Jesus, who teaches about the Kingdom of God and heals any disease in people, Abgar believed in Him, and sent his court painter Ananias to give Jesus a letter from Abgar, asking for healing and your repentance. In addition, he ordered the painter to paint a portrait of Jesus. But the artist failed to make a portrait, "because of the radiant shine of His face." The Lord himself came to help him. He took a piece of cloth and applied it to His Divine face, which is why His divine image was imprinted on the cloth by the power of grace. Having received this Holy Image - the first icon created by the Lord Himself, Abgar venerated him with faith and received healing for his faith.

What icons should be in the home of an Orthodox Christian

The Church does not forbid praying in your own words. The Lord Himself has given us an example of how to pray. The prayer that He left to His disciples is called the Lord's. It exists in all prayer books and is part of church services. This is a prayer - * Our Father *.

It seems to me that for a person living in the world, not only fifteen, but even five minutes of morning and evening prayer, if, of course, it is pronounced with attention and feeling, is enough to be a real Christian. It is only important that the thought always corresponds to the words, the heart answers the words of the prayer, and the whole life corresponds to the prayer.

Try, following the advice of St. Theophan the Recluse, to set aside some time for prayer during the day and for the daily fulfillment of the prayer rule. And you will see that it will bear fruit very soon.

The basis of the life of an Orthodox Christian is fasting and prayer. Prayer, "there is a conversation between the soul and God."
