The symbol of faith is not, in the proper sense, a prayer - an appeal to God, the Mother of God, angels or saints. This is a short and accurate presentation of the foundations of the Christian doctrine, compiled and approved at the 1st and 2nd Ecumenical Councils. The entire Creed consists of twelve members, and each of them contains a special truth, or, as it is also called, the dogma of our Orthodox faith: the 1st term speaks of God the Father, the 2nd to 7th members speak of God the Son 8th - about God the Holy Spirit, 9th - about the Church, 10th - about baptism, 11th and 12th - about the resurrection of the dead and eternal life. The symbol of faith is read among morning and evening prayers, and is also sung by the faithful during the Liturgy of the Faithful - the most important and important part of the Divine Liturgy. Therefore, he is always included in prayer books as a prayer.

Prayer symbol of faith "I believe in the One God the Father Almighty"

The Symbol of Faith is the greatest Christian prayer, which sets out the foundations of the Orthodox faith. This is one of the main prayers that is read at any service.

"Symbol of Faith" is one of the main Orthodox prayers

This prayer was composed at the First and Second Ecumenical Councils. The prayer appeal consists of parts: the first seven parts were written by the holy fathers at the First Ecumenical Council in the city of Nicaea in 325, and the remaining five parts were an addition to the Second Ecumenical Council, held in Constantinople in 381.

The uniqueness of this prayer lies in the fact that it reminds all Christians of the meaning of their faith. This prayer service in the church is the main one for all branches of Christianity: Orthodox, Catholics and Protestants.

The meaning of prayer in the life of every believer

This prayer is a statement that it is itself a great great mystery. No one can say with certainty whether a person acquires faith during his lifetime or whether it is given to him by the Almighty. In Christianity, there is a constant debate about what awaits after the death of people born in another culture and believing in something else. We can unequivocally say that if a person adheres to universal human rules during his lifetime and lives with love and sincerity in his heart, then the doors to the Lord's paradise are open to him. Every person deserves this, regardless of their beliefs. The main thing is that goodness reigns in the soul. And this choice is made by each person independently.

Prayers The Symbol of Faith is a means of uniting all believers, and this is its great secret. She seems to create one big family of all people, and directs everyone to people together to the Light of God. It briefly conveys everything that a believer should remember.

According to its text, to believe means not to accept anything that the enemies of Christianity assert. Although none of people saw God during their lifetime, one must believe that this will definitely happen in the future. Each of us should also believe that after death we will have a bright heavenly kingdom, and not a cold silent emptiness. And this gives strength to live and enjoy every minute. This is what the word “I believe” focuses on in prayer.

Obligatory prayer for the baptism of a child

This prayer must be read at baptism. In this rite, she plays the role of an oath. If an adult is baptized, then he reads it himself. With the words of prayer, a person at baptism swears allegiance to the Lord in accepting faith and God himself in his heart.

When the baptism of a foolish baby is carried out, the prayer is said by one of the godparents. Moreover, it is accepted that when a boy is baptized, the prayer is read by the godmother, and when the girl is baptized, the godfather must pronounce the prayer test. It is advisable that the godparents confess and receive Holy Communion before the baptism ceremony.

The importance of godparents in a child's life can hardly be overestimated. These people are witnesses to the acceptance by the born of the Holy Faith of Christ. From now on, they must support him throughout his life. And if, according to the will of the Lord, something happens to the parents, then the godparent must compensate the child for this loss and take care of him all his life.

You should know that it is not necessary to have two godparents. This is rather a popular interpretation, not a church rule. But on the other hand, it is very important that the godfather must be a Christian. Otherwise, the baptismal ceremony will be invalid.

As a result of all that has been said, parents should approach the choice of a godfather or godmother for their child thoroughly. It can be a relative or a stranger, but at the same time it is very important that he is close to you in spirit and you can entrust your child to him.

When to read the Creed prayer

This prayer must be read at every service. Therefore, the person who attended it at least once heard her. All believers usually sing it together. The prayer is so strong that it is allowed to read it not only in the original, but also in Russian as close as possible to the original text. It is not at all necessary to memorize the text, the main thing is to put all the sincerity of your soul into every spoken phrase.

The prayer "Symbol of Faith" should be read for the coming sleep and in the morning hour. It allows you to maintain true faith in the soul of a person and will not allow you to deviate from the true path, succumbing to devilish temptations. In addition, to strengthen the faith, the prayer text is recommended to be pronounced in any difficult life situation.

If you read this prayer before bedtime, you can forget about all the failures that happened on the past day and rethink the current situation. That is, it will be possible to find new, more correct solutions the next day. In the morning hour, this prayer helps to properly tune in to the new day. It is also recommended to read this prayer in case of a serious illness, but this should be done only after the main prayer.

The prayer "Symbol of Faith" can not only be read, but also listened to. This does not diminish its effect. The main thing is to ponder over her phrases and be aware of them. In no case should such a prayer audio text be a background to any activity.

Interpretation of the prayer "Symbol of Faith"

The Articles of Faith parts of the prayer make the following important statements:

  • Part 1 - about God the Father. It says that a person believes in God the Father and considers the whole world around him a gift from him.
  • Part 2-7 - about God the Son. Here it is stated that he was born of God and is his continuation. The Son of God came down from heaven for the sake of people. He had to endure terrible torments at the crucifixion, to be buried and rise again, and then ascend to heaven again. Since then, the Son of God has taken a place in heaven next to the Father. The Lord's reign is infinite and he will always judge both the living and the dead, since he is the Creator of everything.
  • Part 8 is about God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit breathes life into all of the Lord's creations and speaks to people through the prophets.
  • Part 9 is about the Church. It states that everyone should believe in one church.
  • Part 10 is about Baptism. This section glorifies the sacrament of Baptism.
  • Part 11-12 is about the resurrection of the dead and about eternal life.

"I believe in one God the Father ..." - this phrase is the basis of Christianity, the beginning of all beginnings. It is the Father who gives life to man and loves his creation throughout life. In addition, he takes care of him and takes part in all matters. The father forgives mistakes and wants the child to achieve prosperity in life. God the Father shows love for all living, for he is their Creator. On the other hand, obedience and son's trust in the Father in everything is natural. God is the Creator of the whole world, of everything that surrounds man, visible and invisible. The world was created by Divine wisdom, therefore, the Almighty is responsible for the fact that everything in it should work out well.

The Son of God is the second Person of the Holy Trinity. He is the true God, and he is named by the Archangel Gabriel himself Jesus, that is, the Savior. Christ means the Anointed One, in ancient times kings and rulers were often called so. Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God, he is born, not created. This confirms the Creator's boundless love for his creatures.

The Son of God, came to earth from heaven to save the entire human race. The Son of God is omnipresent, he is in heaven and on earth. He was before, but invisible, but to strengthen the Christian faith he appeared in the flesh before the human race. He became a man without ceasing to be God. The birth of Christ was accomplished under the assistance of the Holy Spirit, the Mother of God's Son, both in conception, after conception, and in the very birth remained a chaste Virgin, who dedicated her life to God. Jesus Christ was crucified for all human sins and by this he delivered us from them, giving hope to each of us for the salvation of the soul and eternal life.

In the text of the prayer, Jesus Christ is called the savior of the human race. And the Virgin Mary is the Most Holy Theotokos, the Queen of Heaven. She is revered by the Orthodox Church above all saints and angels, since she is the Mother of the Lord God.

Every Orthodox Christian must believe that by his crucifixion on the cross, Jesus Christ paid for the sins of men and did this for the salvation of all people on earth. Such a conviction will allow you to understand and accept the sinlessness of Jesus Christ and his sincere God's love for people.

The resurrection of Christ gives people faith in life after death. Therefore, one of the main Christian holidays is Easter. On this day, joy and hope appear in the souls of people that a righteous life will lead them to God's kingdom.

The Holy Spirit is also true God. He is Life-giving, because the Holy Trinity gives life to all creatures, and at the same time fills people additionally with spirituality. The Holy Spirit comes from the Father, therefore it must be glorified and worshiped. You can participate in the Holy Spirit if you adhere to the sacraments provided for in Holy Scripture and earnestly and sincerely pray, recognizing the Holy Christian faith. The Holy Spirit always communicates with people through prophets.

The Church founded by Jesus Christ on earth is one and every Christian must necessarily believe in her holiness. It is she who allows sinners to repent, receive forgiveness, and then follow the righteous path leading to the Kingdom of God. In the temple, the soul of a person is united with God, therefore, every believer should, if possible, attend divine services. Church is a general concept of the Orthodox faith. It includes the totality of believers, living and dead, who are united among themselves by faith in God, true love and the most holy Sacraments. Therefore, it can be argued that every Orthodox Christian is a part of the Church.

The prayer mentions the Sacrament of human baptism, which is equally important for both an adult and a child. This event opens the door for a person to the Church of Christ, which accepts him, and God grants him protection. Only baptized people can participate in all the Sacraments. This prayer at baptism must be said by one of the godparents. From the moment of baptism, you can count on God's grace, as well as repentance for sins.

The prayer speaks of a universal resurrection. According to Holy Scripture, about the time of the second coming of Jesus Christ, every second deceased will be resurrected, assuming a new appearance, which will be endowed with deep spirituality and incorruptibility of the body. Changes will affect the body and everyone living at the time of the coming of the Lord God.

Christ's judgment is obligatory for every person. At the same time, the righteous will find endless joy by being reunited with the Lord God.

I believe in the One God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only Begotten, Who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, God, true from God, true, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, Who was all. And he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. And packs of the coming with glory to judge the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. In one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I tea the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the century to come. Amen. I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. And shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, Whose kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spake by the prophets. In One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. Look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age. Amen.

The Symbol of Faith is a concise and accurate statement of the basic truths of the Christian faith, which every Orthodox Christian needs to know. In the short and precise words of the Creed, we confess, that is, we openly declare what we believe in. No one, believing otherwise, diverging in anything from the Symbol of Faith, has the right to call himself an Orthodox Christian. And the Symbol arose precisely in the struggle against heresies, with wrong opinions about God and the world. The symbol was compiled and approved at the 1st (Nicene, in 325) and 2nd (Constantinople, in 381) Ecumenical Councils (therefore it is also called the Nicene-Constantinople Creed).

So, the Smol of Faith is a summary of the foundations of the Christian faith, the basic Christian dogmas, the frame beyond which there is already non-Orthodoxy.

But this "list" of dogmas is built from the first person, personally:

I believe in one God the Father ...

And in one Lord Jesus Christ ...

and in the Holy Spirit, Lord ...

into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic

I confess one baptism for the remission of sins.

Tea the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the century to come.

Amen(truly so!).

Symbol of faith - personal confession faith of an Orthodox Christian. This is the confession of for what and how we live or should live, the most important thing in life, in the world. This is what God through the Church tells us and what we confess before God and people. Therefore, the Symbol of Faith is also a prayer, an interview of the soul with God and God with the soul.

As a prayer, the Symbol of Faith is very difficult: every time you utter (at least mentally) these truths, you must consciously accept them in your heart, strive to live them. But this is a compass, without which you will go astray from the road leading to life, and this compass must be checked at least daily. That is why it is included in the daily private rule. It is also included in the shortest prayer rule for the laity, taught to us by the Monk Seraphim. You can't live a day without it.

Each word of the Creed is extremely deep and capacious; Brief explanations cannot go into this depth (which is why they are not given in this book). The explanation of the Symbol of Faith constitutes the main part - "On Faith" - "The Extensive Christian Catechism" of St. Philaret of Moscow, a book that every Orthodox Christian should know well.

Saint Theophan the Recluse in his letters gave advice on how to overcome doubts about the truths of faith. These lines are directly related to the role of the Symbol of Faith in our spiritual life and show what a prayerful perception of it should be.

“Imagine the truth and pray for it, while you pray, rotate it in your mind and make up prayers from it. The moment will come when this truth will enter the heart and embrace the entire being of the soul, nourishing and cheering it up. This is the affinity of the soul with the truth; after that, doubts can no longer shake her. They can come to mind, but they are far from the soul, like talking or stamping behind a wall. "

“To hold the truth in your heart, this is how you need to do it! .. Take some truth and understand more fully in your consciousness how it is confessed, and then pray to the Lord, may He write it in your heart, how it confesses ... Our prayers all come out from the dogmas. The Lord came to earth for our salvation. Confessing this truth, pray: “Lord! How then, walking on the earth, You healed all sorts of ailments, cleansed the lepers, bestowed sight on the blind, - now come to me and enlighten the eyes of my mind, and take away the leprosy of sins from me ”. So in relation to all truth. When all truths enter the heart, then all doubts are over. They themselves will bounce off like arrows from someone covered with armor. This means, in other words, is - to taste the truth, to rejoice in it, to remember it with comfort and sweetness, and to warmly rotate it in the mind with warmth. God help you to achieve this! "

Have a word symbol- several meanings; so it was in the Greek language from which this word came, and so in Russian. This word was especially overgrown with philosophical understandings (hundreds of volumes of books have been written about the symbol in a philosophical sense). Here are different definitions from different dictionaries: what serves as a conventional sign of a concept; in science - the same as a sign; in art, in a broad sense, a symbol is an image in the aspect of its significance and a sign endowed with all the organic and inexhaustible nature of the image; complete picture, essence in few words or signs. The original Greek word means: joint, crossing, joining, merging, meeting, joining. This also meant an identification mark, by which one could recognize each other more accurately than by a password: a coin or bone was split into two halves; if the half presented was completely suitable for yours, it was clear that in front of you was the right person.
