The optimal size of a bench with a back. Bench: options made of wood and metal for summer cottages and at home, device, schemes. Making a wooden structure with your own hands

garden benches: the topic of today's article on sat. Drawings, photos, and instructional video for manufacturing garden bench with your own hands, as well as construction tips, you can find in this article.

Arrangement of a personal plot is carried out by various methods: they are installed and, paths are laid, they are broken. The final nuance is garden furniture. For arranging a small recreation area just the same and suitable garden bench.

garden bench with a back can be a key element in the design of the local area

Garden benches their types

The modern range of garden furniture is quite extensive. Classification of products is carried out on the basis of such signs:

 • characteristics;
 • material;
 • functionality.

Functionality of garden benches

Functional features of furniture are valued along with their practicality and durability. All products are divided into two large groups:

 • benches used exclusively for sitting;
 • multifunctional benches (the product can perform several functions - be a bench, rocking chair or table).

Bench with back made from logs and boards

Useful advice! Use the unusual design of the transformer bench to save space in the garden. It can easily be converted into a table for writing or eating outside.

Many homeowners install. To create them, materials of various types are used, and the structures themselves can be given an interesting shape. To make it convenient to use such a bench, it is imperative to build a canopy over it. It will provide protection from the sun and rain.

Bench-swing- excellent garden furniture

Popular for making do-it-yourself benches that have a stationary type of placement. Most often they are made of concrete or brick, and a special place is selected for installation. Such products are not afraid of the influence of the sun and moisture.

Exist folding benches with small dimensions and mobile design. They are useful if the suburban area is rarely used. During the absence of the owners folding benches removed to the garage for storage or to the house.

Combined bench made of wood and metal with forged elements

Useful advice! Take oak or larch for work.

In order to protect the surface of the product, it is necessary to cover it with a varnish or paint. This will prevent damage to the wood, which is caused by insects, fungi, mold, as well as moisture and sun. Using a lacquer as a finish will help preserve the natural grain of the wood.

Metal products are characterized by high strength and long service life with minimal maintenance.

Photo of original benches

If you prefer practical options for benches, you should pay attention to products made of stone. This type of material is characterized by low cost and long service life, and the structures are durable, reliable and aesthetically attractive.

The stone belongs to the category of materials of natural origin. Despite this, the designs of such shops will not always be able to support any. Stone elements must be present on the site as an addition. The shops look especially advantageous against the backdrop of a residential building, partially made of stone.

Bench lined with natural stone, with soft mattresses and multi-colored pillows

A good ensemble will be made of stone:

 • steps;
 • tracks;
 • reservoirs;
 • gabions;
 • flower beds.

Supports, arbors and awnings can be made of stone partially or completely. If at least one of these elements is present on the site, stone shops will always fit in. However, it should be remembered that such products do not have a back.

Even the simplest stone bench looks elegant, noble and solid.

Photos of garden benches made of plastic and other materials

Plastic products have a number of advantages, which include:

 • simplicity and low weight of the structure, due to which the transportation of the material does not cause difficulties, and the bench itself can be moved from one place to another;
 • profitability;
 • an extensive selection of color solutions, which allows you to make a product that will subsequently fit well into the design of the garden;
 • practicality (folding-type structures are easily disassembled and stacked in the trunk and also easily assembled on site).

Plastic benches are light in weight, making them extremely mobile and easy to transport

Useful advice! Use your own hands to create designs from combined materials. You will be able to endow your product with positive performance characteristics that are inherent in each type of raw material used.

Combined combinations of materials of different texture, texture, color and origin are used not only for decorative purposes. The most common option is a combination of stone and wood.

Combined bench built from metal and wood

Designs made of wood and complemented by stone or metal elements look original. In such projects, wood creates a soft and beautiful texture, while stone and metal are responsible for strength.

Making garden benches with your own hands

bench designs have some distinctive features. Building a garden bench- the easiest way to organize a seating area in the garden. The product does not have a back and, unlike benches, has a simple external design.

Creating a bench– a quick and easy way to organize a place to relax in the garden

Created with a back can have a more complex decorative design:

 • non-standard form;
 • armrests;
 • design, decorated with carved and forged elements.

Photos, ideas for making garden benches

To revive the design of a simple bench, it is not necessary to invent complex drawing and puzzle over the creation of additional accessories for the garden. It is enough to use two wooden boxes and several boards.

original wooden bench with table designed to seat two people

The boxes in this case will serve as supports. After making the bench, they can be filled with earth and organize a small flower bed. A seat is made from the boards, which is installed between the boxes. The material must be sanded well with sandpaper, remove all irregularities and burrs.

Useful advice! From benches based on boxes, you can make a garden bench with a backrest with your own hands. It is enough to install the structure against the wall and nail several boards on its plane in the required place as a back.

Rice. 1-1. Bench drawing with wooden flower boxes: 1 - bench arrangement and calculation of materials: A - logs (2x4 boards 17 1/2" long - 6 pcs., 2x4 boards 20 1/2" long - 4 pcs.); B - drawer bottom (3/4 plywood 20 1/2” x 20 1/2” - 2 pcs.); C - trims (1x4 boards 23 1/2” long - 16 pieces); D - side lamellas (boards 1x6 25” long - 32 pieces); E - trims for facing the top (2x4 boards 45" long - 8 pieces); F - seat frame (2x4 boards 63" long - 2 pcs., 2x4 boards 17 1/2" long - 2 pcs.); G - cross bars (1x2 boards 17 1/2” long - 5 pieces); H - seat (boards 1x4 60" long - 5 pcs.); 2 - side facing; 3 - installation of the walls of the flower box; 4 - mounting dimensions of the walls of the box; 5 - diagram of the device for the bottom of the flower box

Wood structures have a certain disadvantage. The material itself requires constant care, and in this case the tree is also in contact with the soil, it is necessary to periodically water the plants. To make a bench more practical, wooden boxes can be replaced with concrete or stone pedestals. Concrete flower beds can be made independently or purchased at the store.

For the seat, you should use processed boards or half a log. The choice of raw materials depends on the style in which the design of the garden or patio is made. It is recommended to fix the seat with metal corners fixed to concrete using dowels, and to wood using through bolts or self-tapping screws.

Rice. 1-2. Bench drawing with wooden flower boxes: 6 - mounting dimensions of the seat frame; 7 - strengthening the design of the bench; 8 - installation of seat rails; 9, 10 - drawer installation

As supports, you can use flowerpots with dwarf trees or ornamental bushes. The only, but very important requirement is that the container must be very strong. A hole is cut into the seat in the shape of a flowerpot in the place where the legs of the benches are usually located. The size of the opening should be sufficient to allow the plant to grow and care for it, however, it should not exceed the size of the container. Essentially, a plank seat is placed on top of the flowerpots and fixed by gravity and the weight of those seated.

Garden bench in ethno style

Ethno and rustic design styles are often used in interior design. A country house, cottage or cottage is a great place to create an eco-friendly and natural corner suitable for a family vacation. This design can be continued in the garden. For this, it is enough make a bench with a back from logs (Fig. 1) and other natural materials.

Useful advice! For the construction of the structure, logs with or without bark can be used. To process the material or leave it in its original form - depends on your wishes and the design of the site.

benches made of logs are distinguished by originality and environmental friendliness

The principles of making a garden bench from a log

To form a seat, it is enough to saw a tree trunk along. This can be done exactly in the middle (in the diameter zone) or by moving the saw closer to the edge (in the medium diameter zone). The back is made from a thinner tree trunk, or you can cut closer to the edge. As a result, this element must be thinner and lighter than the seat part.

Rice. 2. Log garden bench in the courtyard of a country house

Legs can be made from the remains of a log. They are connected to the seat part with metal pins. It is done like this:

 1. In the parts to be connected, holes are made for the pins in the appropriate places. The diameter of the holes should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the fastener.
 2. The pin is driven into one of the holes approximately in the middle of its length.
 3. On top of the free edge of the pin, the second part to be connected is placed and also hammered. In this case, the blows fall not on the pin, but on the wood.

Ethno and rustic styles are great for decorating a personal plot

Fasteners are hammered with a sledgehammer or hammer. Since wood is a fairly soft material by its structure, hammer blows can damage its surface. To avoid this, you need to put an unnecessary board under the instrument.

Pins provide a reliable connection of all parts. To strengthen the fixation, you can install 2-3 pins.

Ethno-style in garden benches building ideas

In the ethno style, you can create a design with a non-standard design. The highlight can be, for example, the manufacture of a bench using curved branches of different diameters. Before assembling the product, these branches are processed and skinned. In other words, the bark is removed from them, and then the surface is polished with sandpaper. An unedged board must be used to assemble the seat. It is processed in a similar way.

Various options wooden benches created in ethno style

Note! All elements of this design have rounded shapes, and the seat boards face forward.

If your summer cottage has a wicker fence, you can use the same design option with some changes. Short seat boards can be replaced with long ones by placing them along. The back is formed according to the principle of weaving from branches of medium thickness, which bend well.

Rustic bench will become a unique object in the garden

To make a wicker back, it is not necessary to have any special skills. You may not get a very neat result, but this is not necessary. The back should be simple and unobtrusive, coarse weaving will only increase its decorative properties. Branches can be placed tightly or, conversely, leave gaps between them so that your bench “breathes”.

Bench - an alternative to a garden bench

Despite the absence of a back, this scheme (Fig. 3-1) for making a bench looks quite attractive due to the characteristics of the material from which it will be made. The design itself has a very simple structure, so everyone can handle the technology of its creation.

For the legs you will need a rounded timber. If you have logs with a small diameter, you can save on the purchase of material and trim them yourself. The original appearance of the bench is obtained due to the fact that the bars are stacked one on top of the other and fixed. The result is a beautiful support for the product.

Rice. 3-1. The procedure for manufacturing a simple wooden bench: 1 - drawing up a design drawing

Calculation of parameters and required materials

The height of the bench can be adjusted according to your needs. This indicator also depends on the diameter of the timber that will be used in the work. To calculate the amount of material, you need to determine how many bars will be stacked one on top of the other to form the required height of one of the legs.

Size chart:

In our case, 5 bars are required, the length of which is 0.45 m. Calculation formula: 5x0.45 = 2.25 m. Based on this, 4.5 m of timber (2.25x2) will be required to build two supports. The seat will consist of five boards 1.2 m long. For its manufacture, the following amount of material will be required: 5x1.2 = 6 m.

Rice. 3-2. The procedure for manufacturing a simple wooden bench: 2 - cutting wood for the legs of the bench; 3 - drilling holes in the details of the legs; 4 - preparation of boards for the seat; 5 - processing the edges of the seat parts

Useful advice! To round the edges of the timber, you can use a cutter or purchase ready-made profiled material. Its cost is higher, but profiled timber is much more convenient in work.

Initial stage: preparation of the material

To begin with, boards for the seat are being prepared. The material is cut into the required number of boards of the appropriate length and processed. Sharp corners should be rounded off. Take advantage of the capabilities of a milling cutter or grinder for this. If you do not have such a tool at hand, it will be enough to process the edges with sandpaper.

Rice. 3-3. The procedure for manufacturing a simple wooden bench: 6, 7 - marking the details of the legs; 8 - drilling holes at the intended points; 9 - applying a protective coating to the parts of the seat

Grinding with sandpaper is a long and laborious process. To simplify your work, you can order the grinding of the material at the sawmill. After the boards are prepared, they need to be opened with a varnish composition. It can be a completely transparent varnish or a tinted composition (the choice of topcoat is up to you).

The bars intended to form the legs of the bench are tightly stacked next to each other so that their edges form a straight line. Using a pencil and square, mark the areas where the fasteners will be installed. The lines should be distributed along the entire length in increments of 7-10 cm.

Rice. 3-4. The procedure for manufacturing a simple wooden bench: 10, 11 - fastening the legs to the seat; 12 - view of the finished product

Assembling a garden bench: mounting fasteners

Metal pins will be used as fasteners. An alternative replacement for them can be dowels made of wood. Holes are made for the installation of fasteners, the diameter of which is slightly smaller than the diameter of the pins, and the depth is half the length of the pin.

To fix the parts, the fasteners will be hammered into one of the bars, and the next element will be pushed through the hole on top of it.

Photo: a bench without a back can be used not only for sitting, but also as a table

Useful advice! Assembling the structure with pins is a reliable method of fastening. To increase the strength of fixation, you can use the adhesive composition during installation, but this technique will make the structure non-separable.

The pin connection is also used in the process of creating according to the drawings do-it-yourself benches for summer cottages from a tree which design is completed with a back. A qualitative result can be achieved only if all the holes are located strictly one above the other. As a result, all parts during assembly should form an even edge line.

White painted wooden table and benches form a cozy dining area in the garden

After drawing the marking lines, you need to measure the distance from the edge, which should be the same. For these purposes, it is recommended to create a template. It is enough to take a piece of the bar, the width of which is 1.5 cm. It will serve as a kind of limiter. In other words, a distance equal to the width of this bar will separate the holes from the edge. Attach the template exactly along the edge line and mark the intersections with the already existing perpendicular markings.

The installation of the pins must be done in a checkerboard pattern, so you should place the holes not at each intersection of the lines, but through one. Holes are also made on the other side of the bar. They should be staggered in relation to the holes that were made earlier. As a result, when connecting the legs to the seat, each plank will have a pair of pins.

The final stage of building a bench made of wood with your own hands

From a technological point of view, the previously described type of connection can be considered correct. However, the scheme of its installation is quite complicated for a person who does not have the necessary skills.

There is an easier way to fasten the structure:

 1. The bars are stacked on top of each other.
 2. Folded parts are fixed with clamps.
 3. Through holes are made at three points (in the center and along the edges).
 4. Through the holes, the parts are fastened with a long stud (do not forget to put washers under the nut and cap).

Photo: original bench made from an old wooden bed

After that, the seat boards are nailed to these legs (on top) or you can make a pin connection in this place.

Useful advice! To hide the placement of the nails, prepare a masking composition from a mixture of very fine sawdust and mastic intended for wood. Choose mastic to match the shop. Apply this mixture to all joints. After drying, the surface should be sanded.

The idea is simple board benches attached to a tree in the garden

When the assembly of the structure is completed, grind all the parts. Their surface should be as smooth as possible. After that, you can apply the finish coat. Use for this purpose a varnish composition or wood paint intended for outdoor use. It is better if the finish coat is translucent. In this way, you can leave the natural pattern of the wood visible.

Garden bench: drawings and photos, for making your own hands

Bench due to the presence of a backrest, it has a more convenient design than a bench. You can lean on it and relax your back. The capacity of such products may be different, but usually drawings garden benches wooden do it yourself are made up for 2-4 persons. This is done for the reason that the long structure needs to install an additional support. As a result, the process of creating a product becomes more complicated. In fact, there is enough space for 2-4 people, so you can limit yourself to making the simplest designs.

The bench, due to the presence of a backrest, has a more comfortable seating design compared to a bench

Garden bench with a back: drawing for manufacturing

To make a bench with a wooden back for this project (Fig. 4) with your own hands, you need to acquire the following tool:

 • drill;
 • a set of drills;
 • hacksaw;
 • planer.

Note! The design is intended for installation in the garden, on the balcony or terrace.

benches, built of wood, harmoniously fit into any landscape

It will take you no more than one day to complete all the work on creating a bench. A square bar made of pine will be used as the main material. The parameters of its section are 6x6 cm. You will also need "twenty" boards. Before cutting these boards, they should be planed until parts with dimensions of 5.8x5.8 cm are obtained.

Bench for giving: instructions for making

Bench assembly from pine bars is carried out in the following sequence:

 • with the help of dowels and adhesive composition, we assemble the legs for the U-shaped sides. Then, using the same fastening method, we fix slats (5.8x2 cm) and prongs (3.5x3.5 cm) mounted on the sides on them;

Rice. 4. Drawing of a wooden bench with back for two persons

 • to mark the locations of the reciprocal holes for mounting dowels, use a marker;
 • connect the sidewall and the longitudinally located rail. In order to mark the position of the sidewall, a 2 cm thick spacer should be used;
 • fix all elements while drilling holes with clamps. This will allow you to achieve accurate mating between the connected parts of the structure;
 • before performing the final assembly, sand all the elements well.

The last stage of construction is the application of a protective agent and a top coat.

For a longer service life, wooden structures need to be treated with a protective agent and applied with a topcoat.

Garden benches made from pallets

From such improvised materials as pallets, you can create an interesting bench design (Fig. 5). It can be installed not only in the garden, but also on the terrace and even inside the country house. Three pallets are required for work.

Manufacturing steps:

 • one of the pallets is divided in half. These halves will subsequently be the back of the product. Cutting must be done so that after assembling the parts of the back and seat form a figure of a geometrically correct shape, and all edges coincide;

Rice. 5. Manufacturing procedure pallet benches in six photos

 • two other pallets are knocked together with nails. We fix the back halves to them;
 • a mattress of the appropriate size should be placed on top of the structure. You can use cushions from an old sofa, reupholstering them first, or sew new ones. You can also put a few small pillows on the back.

Using wooden pallets is a fun way to create original garden furniture.

Useful advice! You can leave the mattress lying still or fix it with straps. For greater functionality, wheels can be added to the design.

Drawing garden bench "Transformer"

For the manufacture of the structure, you will need to purchase pine lumber.

Materials for work:

Features of the manufacture of a transformer bench

Following the step-by-step instructions, you can create an interesting bench, the design of which can be transformed into a table with two benches (Fig. 6).

Main stages making benches:

 • having created the supporting parts according to the drawing, attach 3 boards to one of them. The seat will be formed from these boards. At the same time, do not forget to step back from the end part by 5 cm. 4 self-tapping screws must be installed in each board. Two of them will fix the seat to the support on one side, the rest are designed to fix the seat to the other support (on the other side of the product);

Scheme with mounting dimensions transformer benches

 • for each nodal assembly zone, it will be necessary to install 4 fasteners;

Useful advice! When assembling the assemblies, apply wood glue to these areas. The adhesive composition will increase the strength of fixation and the durability of the entire structure.

 • after all the parts are prepared for work, the legs, which have backrest and seat support, should be sawn from the end at an angle of about 75º. Using self-tapping screws designed for working with wood, connect the legs in pairs with the middle bars. The optimal length of fasteners is 5 cm;

Rice. 6. Drawing to create a transformer bench: 1 - kinematic diagram of the transformer in the "table" position (1 - position limiters B (pipe 20 × 20 mm, length 35-49 mm), 2 - support rod); 2 - detail C (pipe 40 × 20 - 2 pcs.); 3 - connecting jumpers (pipe 20 × 20 mm). D - for an external bench, D1 - for an internal one; 4 - parts B, B1 (pipe 40 × 20 mm). B1 is mirrored with respect to B; 5 - bench leg (4 pcs.), where: A - steel pipe 40 × 20 mm, 1 - jumpers (pipe 20 × 20 mm - 4 pcs.), 2 - support rod

 • next is the back. In the process of transformation, it turns into a countertop. Locate the longitudinal edge of the support board. Its length is 32 cm. Here you need to attach three boards 150 cm long. In this case, the indent from the end in this case will already be 8 cm;
 • boards are mounted so that a gap of 1 cm is formed between adjacent elements;
 • in the support board, you need to make 3 holes, the diameter of which is 0.8 cm. It is better to perform this procedure in advance. These holes will be used to fix the back of the bench in a horizontal position.

One-piece wooden structure for the garden, consisting of a table and benches

The final stage of the construction of the transformer bench

To create axes of rotation, make 2 holes in the top of the rear leg. Fixing the back to the base of the product will be carried out by a pair of M8 bolts.

One of the holes made will be axial, the second - ordinary. To simplify the operation of the bench, equip the bolt in the area of the axial hole with a nut with 6 edges, for the second, a wing nut is suitable. She should bend her mustache. Due to this simple manipulation, fasteners can be turned away / wrapped without the use of additional tools, but only by hand force.

The key link in the patio is a wooden bench with a back

Upon completion of all work, you need to check the design for operability. Set the backrest in an inclined position and secure it with bolts. Remove the fastening element from the hole and move the backrest to a horizontal position. To fix it, place the bolt in its original place and secure with a nut. The design is completely ready for operational use.

While creating garden benches you can experiment and appear fontasiya. The main thing is that at the same time the product turned out to be durable and practical.

There is, perhaps, no such courtyard, wherever there is a shop - an invariable attribute of relaxation and communication. This item is convenient and useful, found everywhere both on the street and indoors. There are countless forms of bench designs, however, they are all united by two basic principles of construction: stability and comfort. It is from them that you should build on, making a bench with a back with your own hands.

Types and design features of benches

The classic solution for the design of the bench is the seat, back and supports. Armrests, a built-in table, a canopy from rain and sun, and much more can complement it. The form can be simple, minimalistic or of unprecedented beauty and complexity, the main thing is that it harmoniously complements the surrounding space and is comfortable for relaxation.

The idea of what the shop will be depends on the following points:

 • Placement area:
 • in the garden, near the house (they decorate the territory, have a mostly stationary, convenient form);
 • terrace (lightweight form, convenient for tea drinking and communication);
 • a barbecue or recreation area (the form must be designed for a certain number of people);
 • near water (corrosion and decay-resistant bench material);
 • The installation site is permanent or the bench needs to be moved, brought in / taken out;
 • Shape: straight, round, semicircle, angled, curved;
 • Production material: wood, metal, stone/concrete, combination of materials.

At home, in the country, improvised materials, used items, such as a bed, a door, a wardrobe, pallets (pallets), chairs, logs, snags, a cinder block and much more, often become the material for constructing a bench. It turns out original, interesting items in a vintage or rustic style. Pallets and furniture made from them have become an "untilted field" for ideas, a fairly common creative material.

Useful elements can be included in the design of the bench, for example, the seat can be made folding, and the sewn space under it can be adapted as a storage capacity. A folding table will be useful, as part of the design of a bench or a shelf for shoes under the seat of a bench in the hallway.

Designing a comfortable bench with a back

Let's start the consideration of the structure with the support posts. Often they have a U or X-shape, their stability has been tested by experience. The form can also be solid (wooden beams, stone slabs), cast (formed from cast iron or concrete, the back goes into supports), in the form of legs, curved from metal or forged elements.

The seat is a part of the bench, which should be comfortable and resistant to stress. It is made solid or at intervals (wooden bars, metal pipes, rods). A solid seat is comfortable, however, it must be provided that water does not stagnate on it after precipitation. The edges of the seat must be rounded so as not to injure the legs. The optimal length is 1500 mm, width is 400-450 mm, the length of one seat is 480 mm (of course, all sizes are selected individually). There are designs where the seat and back are made in one line (the back smoothly passes into the seat by bending), such benches are comfortable, often found in city parks, their supports are cast iron or concrete, you can repeat this shape from wood or bend from a profile pipe .

A significant part in the convenience of the bench is given to the distance from the seat to the ground (floor), it should be 400-450 mm. It is necessary that the legs touch the base.

The backrest makes the bench an object of long rest, it allows you to relax not only the leg muscles, but also the muscles of the back. An important role here is played by the angle of inclination relative to the seat and the height of the back. Based on human physiology, 10-20 degrees is considered the most comfortable. angle of deviation of the back from the perpendicular, height from 360 mm (since the human spine has an S-shaped bend, the height of the back is divided into two parts: 180–240 mm to the fulcrum - the place where the back does not fit and + another 180–240 mm - touch segment to the back). The back should not be massive and outweigh the bottom of the structure.

Advice! The gap (clearance) between the back and the seat should not be made large, if a small child sits on a bench, he will not be able to lean on his back.

The choice of material for the manufacture of a bench with a back

The most convenient and budget material for manufacturing is wood. The wooden bench combines a balance of beauty and comfort, looks great in any space. Wood is a malleable material for making various shapes and decorative elements, it has a pleasant tactile sensation, does not overheat in the sun and does not get cold in the cold.

A simple do-it-yourself wooden bench is made quite quickly, a minimal set of tools is needed. You can use inexpensive wood species. Resistance to moisture, ultraviolet radiation, fungal and insect damage is provided by modern protective agents for impregnating and coating wood surfaces. The weight of the product is optimal for moving.

The disadvantage of wooden benches is considered to be fragility, the tree tends to dry out over time, the joints are loosened. The structure can be strengthened by various metal assembly and fastening elements (corners, threaded ties, self-tapping screws instead of nails), strengthening the joints with glue. If the supports need to be dug into the ground, they should be protected from decay by impregnating them with oil / resin-containing agents.

Advice! Wood is a flammable material, so a bench located near a fire (bonfire, barbecue, stove) must be treated with a refractory solution (flame retardant), which will help to resist fire for some time.

Metal is a reliable and durable material with proper care and operating conditions. Refined, “airy”, “lace” designs are obtained from it. The main drawback is corrosion, which is eliminated by a protective coating of surfaces with primer, paint, enamel, repeated periodically as needed. Flexible metal can be given a different shape. The design of the bench made of square profile pipes will be stable, solid and light. The square section is the most convenient in installation. The greatest beauty of the benches are obtained from forged elements.

The assembly of the metal product is very strong, carried out with the help of welding seams and threaded fasteners. The need for a welding machine and the ability to use it makes installation at home somewhat difficult.

The seat and back of a metal bench are almost always covered with pillows, covers, bedspreads, since tactile sensations are not always pleasant. The thermal conductivity of metal is higher than that of wood, so it is difficult to achieve a comfortable temperature balance between the body and the metal surface, and it is pointless to heat the bench with oneself.

A bench made of concrete is practically a sculpture. In this case, any form can be achieved with a lot of effort and effort. The frame assembled from metal is placed in the formwork and poured with concrete (the concrete hardening period is 1–2 months). They basically make any parts of the structure and combine them with other materials. It is heavy and not designed to be moved. There is no doubt about immobility. Resistant to all weather conditions, durable.

Concrete complexes of benches and containers for planting plants with the installation of lighting elements look great. Practical for placement near the water.

Advice! Under heavy benches, a flat area should be prepared from layers of sand, gravel, crushed stone so that it does not get stuck in the ground.

The most common bench option is a design with a combination of materials. She is preferred in most cases, since here you can combine a reliable frame (metal), a comfortable seat with a back (wood), while achieving beauty, durability, convenience and lightness of form.

When buying material, make sure of its quality, you need to choose a dry tree so that it does not lead, remember the size of the parts. If there is a drawing with the specified dimensions, the material can be cut at the place of purchase, which will facilitate its transportation.

Drawing, material calculation, preparation for construction

A do-it-yourself shop begins with an idea that is first embodied in a drawing. The drawing must be accurate and detailed and will need to be referred to throughout the work. Two drawings can be made: a bench frame and a seat with a back if the materials are different. The option when the supports are dug in (concreted) should provide for an additional length of the supports.

The drawing of the shop will show the number of parts, and the dimensions will help determine the amount of material used.

Tools: saw, planer, drill, tape measure, angle gauge, wrench.

Materials: pine board 25x75 mm, 40x80 mm, 40x120 mm, bolts with nuts 9 mm - 8 pcs., self-tapping screws, sandpaper.

File the parts in the right amount to size, sand. Start assembly.

How to do it yourself: the order of connecting parts

 1. Assembling the bench supports: mark and drill holes for the bolted connection, before that, fix the parts with clamps. Tighten the connections of both sidewalls;
 2. Connection of supports with jumpers: attach power jumpers to the structures of the side supports using self-tapping screws according to the drawing;
 3. Assembling the backrest and seat: screw the strips to the side supports with self-tapping screws, observing a uniform gap between them. Drown the heads of the self-tapping screws in the slats;
 4. Grinding joints and sharp corners;
 5. Application of decorative and protective coatings.

If there is a desire to emphasize the texture of the wood, then the surface is treated with a non-water-based stain (untreated wood swells from water) of the selected color, then the surface is varnished in several layers according to the instructions on the package (the varnish should be for outdoor purposes with good wear resistance, for example, yachts). lacquer). Between the application of layers, the varnish must dry (stage from dust - when dust does not stick to the surface and it can be wiped off). Before applying the next layer, the previous one must be lightly sanded, this will not affect the transparency of the varnish.

If you decide to paint the shop, then before painting on the surface you need to apply a base (a product to protect and reduce the porosity of wood), it will give a good adhesive effect, the paint will last longer. Then apply paint for outdoor purposes in several layers.

All painting work should be carried out outdoors, a respirator must be used indoors.

For greater decorativeness, you can brush the surface, the structure of the tree will become more expressive. The naturalness of the wood is emphasized by the application of impregnating oil-wax products with a water-repellent and protective effect.

Today, the choice of wood protection products, as well as all kinds of paint and varnish coatings, is very wide. It will not be difficult to find a tool that will combine the desired qualities.

Whatever material and drawing is chosen, the bench will be unique because it is made by hand. Remember about safety measures, all work must be accompanied by the use of protective equipment.

A bench is an indispensable element of any suburban area. Today, such structures perform many important functions: from their direct purpose to giving the garden a unique design.

Many owners of a suburban area prefer to build benches on their own, since this simple task does not take much time and money.

There are several basic materials that are used as the basis for building benches.

Wood

The most popular option is wood. It is believed that it is from this material that the most aesthetic designs are obtained.

Due to the universal aesthetic characteristics of the material, wooden benches fit perfectly into the landscape of any garden. It is important to consider that the benches are constantly in the open air. Therefore, it is necessary to choose those wood species that are characterized by maximum resistance to atmospheric phenomena.

These include: hazel, oak, cherry pine, and larch. For additional protection, the material is coated with a special varnish.

Metal

Metal is popular for the production of benches for many reasons: durability, practicality, resistance to precipitation, ease of operation. As the best option for the garden, openwork structures with interesting patterns are most often made. Alternatively, you can focus on minimalism.

Stone

Stone benches are impressive and monumental. Main materials: granite, marble, quartzite. In some cases, raw stone is used to create a unique design, in others a stone with a smooth surface is used.

Plastic

Plastic is the most affordable, convenient option. It is considered more seasonal and budgetary than aesthetic and decorative. However, with the right design of a plastic bench, it can become a decoration of the garden. Colorful pillows, lanterns, flowers and much more are often used for decor.

Varieties of benches

Garden benches are traditionally divided into several categories. The criterion for the division is the location.

They are usually installed near the threshold, which determines the choice of material. Design experts insist that the appearance of the front bench should match the exterior of the country house. Thus, if the building is made of stone, then the bench, respectively, must also be made of stone.

water bench

The main purpose is the possibility of a comfortable pastime near the reservoir. For the construction of structures, it is recommended to choose waterproof materials - artificial or natural stone.

It can be located virtually anywhere in the suburban area. Plastic is usually used as the base, as it is lightweight and easy to clean.

An indispensable option for hardworking summer residents. Garden benches are installed so that the owners of the site can comfortably relax while working in the garden. To ensure the aesthetic pleasure that accompanies the rest, the structures are located next to the flower beds.

This variety can also be called the "bench of loneliness." The fact is that they are usually placed in the most remote places of the garden, so that a person has the opportunity to hide from prying eyes. A popular material for manufacturing is wood.

seasonal bench

This is a foldable design that is lightweight. Thus, the task of transferring the bench from one place to another is greatly facilitated: in the summer - in the shade, in autumn or spring - in sunny places. The best material is plastic.

Do-it-yourself wood bench

There are many different types of wooden benches. We will look at a few of them.

Standard wooden bench

Materials:

 • croaker - a board with bark on one side - 2 trimmings one and a half meters long;
 • bars - 2 pieces;
 • trimming bars - 2 pieces 15x20 centimeters.

Step 1. We dig two holes, align them in depth.

Step 2. We align the corners between the uprights and the bars so that it is comfortable to sit on the bench afterwards.

Step 3 We nail the bars with nails 200 millimeters.

Step 4. We bury the blanks.

Step 5. We tamp.

Step 6. We nail the back to the racks.

Step 7. We nail the back to the bars.

Step 8. We process wood with special enamel or varnish.

The described option is an ordinary country bench, which acts as a functional option rather than a decorative element.

List of materials:

 • suitable boards - cedar is best;
 • simple pencil;
 • roulette;
 • saw;
 • self-tapping screws;
 • nails;
 • hammer;
 • polyurethane adhesive;
 • plant pots;
 • priming;
 • plants.

Bench manufacturing technology

Step 1. Armed with a calculator and a tape measure, we calculate the dimensions of the bench.

Step 2. We grind the boards in such a way that there are no notches, burrs and other defects on them.

Step 3. Cut out 46 segments of the same length (about 50 centimeters each).

Step 4. Set aside 6 segments to the side for further construction of the turret.

Step 5. We assemble the support boxes from 40 segments.

To do this, we put two segments parallel to each other, and then we put two more segments perpendicular to them from above. Thus, we lay out the rest of the strips to make a turret. We fix the corners with glue and self-tapping screws for greater strength. There are 20 strips per box.

Step 6. We take long boards and start making a frame for the future design. To do this, lay the boards on their side and fix them in the middle with a transverse bar.

Step 7. We fasten the frame to the support boxes with self-tapping screws and glue.

Step 8. We make a "turret" from the remaining 6 segments. To do this, we lay out the straps on one of the support boxes in the same way as we did before.

The last row must be made continuous with the help of short segments that are inserted between the walls of the boxes.

Step 10. If desired, we make “window sills” on the top row by adding four polished boards with oblique corners there.

Step 12. We take long boards and cover them with a future seating area.

Step 13. We install pots with plants in the turrets.

This is a very beautiful and simple design that does not take up much space, but contributes to pleasant leisure.

We will consider the production technology of the simplest country bench without a back. It takes only a few hours to assemble the bench. The basis of this design is a profile pipe.

Set of tools:

 • apparatus for welding;
 • profile pipe;
 • steel corner;
 • Bulgarian.

Step 1. We determine the location of the future bench, we carry out the appropriate calculations. The standard length of such a bench is 120 centimeters.

Step 2. With the help of a grinder, we cut off three metal blanks 120 centimeters long. They will act as a seat.

Step 3. Evenly lay the workpieces on a flat surface. You can use a stove.

Step 4. We take a steel corner, cut off two crossbars.

Step 5. We apply the crossbars perpendicular to the blanks, stepping back from the edges about ten centimeters, and weld them.

Step 6. We weld two bench legs to the corners, the length of which is adjusted according to the wishes of the site owners.

Step 7. We weld a transverse bar to the legs, stepping back from the bottom of the seat about 20-25 centimeters.

Step 8. We make two crossbars from the trimmings of the corners.

Step 9. We weld these crossbars to the bases of the legs of the bench.

Step 10. Apply a protective coating to the metal.

Step 11 Installing the bench.

If desired, you can modify the design by welding the railing and back to it. Bright paint will give the bench an interesting look.

Construction from improvised materials

First of all, it is necessary to decide what materials will be used as the frame of the structure. It can be:

 • stones;
 • wooden pallets;
 • bricks;
 • bottles.

Also in the process of work you will need the following materials: clay, straw, water, sand, paint, brushes.

Preparing a frame from pallets

 1. We fill the bottles with soil.
 2. We lay them in several layers on a pillow of sand and gravel.
 3. We tie the bottles with wire.

Preparing a clay solution

Stage 1. Mix straw with sand and clay.

Stage 2. Add water to the mixture and stir the contents of the container.

Stage 3. Roll small balls out of the solution with our hands.

Stage 4. We apply the balls to the pre-prepared frame, thus forming the outlines of the future bench.

Stage 5. We cover the finished bench with polyethylene so that the solution gradually dries and does not crack.

It is believed that clay benches can stand for up to a hundred years without losing their attractive appearance. In addition, this is a fairly economical option that will certainly give any garden originality.

Choose the option that will fit well into the garden plot and bring maximum satisfaction.

Each household plot should have several benches and benches with backs, so that in good weather you can relax on the street, sit under the gentle sun and just take a break from working in the garden. You can buy such a wooden or metal bench, or you can just make it yourself. In this article, we will look at what types of benches are and how you can make one of them yourself, having all the necessary tools and materials at hand.

How are the views

There are a large number of benches with a back, and each owner of a country house or cottage chooses for himself the option that is most suitable for the exterior of his backyard.

Benches are very different depending on their scope.

 • Ordinary benches with a back are suitable for any personal plot and fit perfectly into the exterior of the yard. They are comfortable and very practical, as they have a simple design and unpretentious in their appearance. Suitable for installation near the house, in the gazebo, near the pond, etc. They can be made of wood, metal, stone, and also be combined (wood and metal, wood and stone, wood and brick, plastic and other building materials).
 • Corner benches will look great where you can’t put an ordinary large bench with a back. They can be placed in the corners of the gazebo, in the gardens, as well as in any convenient place on the plot. Such benches can be metal, wooden, stone and combined.
 • Ordinary backless benches can be installed anywhere, as they are versatile and comfortable enough for any country house. They can be easily made by hand, as they are made according to the most common standard drawing of a classic type.
 • Oval, round or semicircular benches with or without a back will look great in the center of the same round gazebo, in the center of the garden or anywhere else, where they will create an aesthetic exterior for the entire backyard, and also perform their direct functions. Also, in the center of a round bench, a tree, a green bush can grow, a beautiful flower bed can bloom, or even a children's sandbox can be located. It all depends on the imagination of the master and the functional needs of the owners of a country house or cottage. They can be made of wood, metal, stone, as well as in a combined form from various natural materials compatible with each other.

Preparatory stage: drawings, dimensions, angle of inclination

Before you start making a bench for your backyard from any type of material, you need to take all measurements and draw up an accurate drawing of the future design. This is necessary so that it turns out to be even without distortions and rolls. Also, the design scheme will help to calculate the required amount of material for the manufacture of shops of any type.

For the manufacture of wooden structures for a personal plot, pine, oak, birch boards or logs are usually used, as well as pear, hornbeam and durable larch. Almost any tree is easy to process, has excellent decorative qualities, and also fits aesthetically into the country landscape. The main advantage of wood is its beautiful aesthetic appearance. But meanwhile, it negatively tolerates sunlight, high humidity and low temperatures (hard frosts). Therefore, it is best to install wooden benches in closed gazebos, on terraces covered with tents, or make them portable (collapsible) so that you can clean them indoors (pantry, basement, closet) for the winter.

Steel supports will be the most competent choice for making a bench with a wooden seat and back to place it on the territory of a summer residence or a country house. Such a bench will serve you for at least 15 years, and it will not need to be removed during snow or rain.

How to make a wooden bench with a backrest with your own hands

To make a wooden bench, we need:

Before proceeding with the manufacture of a wooden portable bench, it is necessary to saw the boards into certain elements:

 1. All prepared boards must be sanded, all sides smoothed and soaked well with an antiseptic. Then leave until completely dry.
 2. We mark the height of the bench 40 cm. Starting from the very middle in the upper part of the elements of the longest legs that will hold the back, it is necessary to make an oblique cut at a slight angle of about 20 °. Then all the corners of the bars must be cut and sanded on both sides. In this case, the back will have an inclined shape. The sections must be strictly the same, otherwise the bench will end up skewed and will have an unattractive appearance, and it will be uncomfortable to sit on it.
 3. We collect the legs of the bench. The distance between the legs should be about 28 cm. The front (facade) and rear wooden pairs of benches for support from the invisible inner side must be fastened with prepared bars and self-tapping screws. We connect the legs with a beam, which we cut to the entire width of the structure - by 50 cm. The strapping is best done double - from above and below.
 4. In order to protect self-tapping screws and screws from premature corrosion, it is necessary to pre-drill the necessary holes and slightly deepen their heads into the board.
 5. On the frame of the bench, as shown in the drawing, at certain intervals (1 or 2 cm), we nail or fasten the planks. Three planks for the seat and two boards for the back. After all the elements are stuffed, it is necessary to check the correctness and evenness of the entire structure with a level. For greater reliability, stability and rigidity, the legs at the bottom are knocked down with planks on both sides. It is advisable to leave gaps of several centimeters between the planks for better air circulation and drainage. We fasten the back (first bar) at a distance of 20 cm from the seat, and the second - at a distance of 38 cm from the seat.
 6. The design of the bench needs to be strengthened and for this it is necessary to make the lower trim of the legs. To do this, we take two beams 1.5 meters long and fasten them to the front and rear legs of the bench frame.

Shop decoration

After completion of all carpentry work, the bench must be completely treated with flame retardant and then coated with several layers of waterproof varnish or ordinary oil paint.

If you want to make the shop more aesthetic and beautiful design, you can simply saw the boards lengthwise and then stuff them diagonally, crosswise or herringbone.

Making a garden bench from wood and metal

A bench with a back, a wooden seat and strong metal legs will be the best option for garden furniture that can be installed in your backyard. Such a design, even in winter, can be left on the street without any problems.

Material calculation and necessary tools

To make a bench, we need:

 • One iron corner with a shelf measuring 40 - 50 mm;
 • One beam for the manufacture of bench seats with a thickness of 40 mm;
 • Special bolts;
 • Hacksaw or grinder;
 • Drill;
 • Screwdriver;
 • Welding electric or gas machine;
 • Sandpaper or grinder.

Step-by-step instruction

 1. The metal corner must be cut into four pieces of one meter each for the manufacture of vertical supports for the structure. Cut five pieces of half a meter and two pieces of one and a half meters to make a frame for installing a seat and back boards on it.
 2. To make the back and seat, we cut off seven planks from a bar 1.5 meters long and 10 cm wide. We grind them and smooth all the side parts well. Soak all the boards well with an antiseptic and leave to dry completely.
 3. We cut the ends of the joining parts from iron corners exactly at an angle of 45 ° and then connect them in series using hot welding. To begin with, we make a frame for the seat device and weld the iron legs well for subsequent attachment of the backrest to them, as well as the stops. In the process of welding, it is necessary to use protective equipment.
 4. In the boards of the seat and back, where the fasteners will be, it is necessary to drill holes for special bolts. After welding, the metal structure must be well sanded at the seams in order to eliminate all irregularities and bumps. Then treat the metal with a special anti-corrosion coating and oil paint in two layers.
 5. We bolt ready-made back and seat boards to the finished metal frame. We pre-impregnate the boards with a flame retardant (preferably saline) and then cover with a good layer of water-repellent varnish or colored paint.
 6. On the ground, it is necessary to make markings for the legs. To do this, it is necessary to dig four holes about 50 cm deep and pour river sand (about 10 cm) on the bottom, and fine gravel (about 20 cm) on top. We lay pieces of roofing material upstairs and put a reinforcing mesh. We install the legs of the bench in the pits and check the horizontal evenness of the structure with a level. Then we fill the legs with concrete (the ratio of sand and cement is 3: 1).
 7. If you plan to put a bench on a regular asphalt or paved surface, then you do not need to make a concrete foundation. The legs of the structure are made from four pieces of an iron corner about half a meter long. For greater stability to the bottom of the corners, it is necessary to weld square "heels" or strengthen the entire structure with the help of a lower metal frame.

Finishing

All metal structural elements must be treated with anti-corrosion agents and primed. Then paint with regular oil paint.

We impregnate wooden elements with special antifungal agents, flame retardant, and then paint with waterproof varnish or colored oil paint.

If desired, the metal parts of the bench can be decorated with various wrought iron patterns, which can be forged on your own or purchased ready-made from special firms.

Bench for a personal plot on brick supports

Material calculation and tools

To make a bench, we need:

 • building brick;
 • Wooden boards (thickness about 40 mm);
 • A pack of self-tapping screws and screws;
 • Several bags of cement, fine sifted sand (6 bags or more) and gravel.

step by step

On a stone-paved and concreted area, the bench must be placed on a cement foundation. On soft ground, it will be necessary to make a columnar foundation.

 1. We carry out the marking of the territory for the installation of brick racks and remove the top layer of soil (turf). We dig holes with a diameter of 20x20 cm and a depth of about 50 - 60 cm for the foundation. At the very bottom of the well, we pour sand 10 cm thick and crushed stone 20 cm thick on top. We tamp all this well, pour a little water over it and leave it for a day.
 2. We put several pieces of roofing material on top and place a bunch of five reinforcing bars in the hole. All this is poured with concrete and allowed to harden for about three or four days. For concrete mixing, we take cement, sand and fine gravel (1:3:5).
 3. We put a small layer of liquid concrete (1-2 centimeters) on the prepared foundation. This will be the basis for the future brick decorative base. Next, we begin to lay a brick with dressing. The masonry is made necessary for the construction of the width, that is, such as the shop itself will be or a little narrower. The height of the brickwork should be about 50 cm. Inside the masonry on the top row, we leave a place to form a shelf for the subsequent installation of a bench seat.
 4. We fasten the seat boards together with the help of a board and self-tapping screws. Then we install the finished bench on the prepared brick supports. We impregnate the tree with a flame retardant, let it dry and cover it with a special water-repellent varnish or colored paint.
 5. Also, depending on how long the bench will be, it will be necessary to make several brick supports. Corner or figured (semicircular, round, oval) structures are best installed on a solid brick base, which will be located on a tape-type foundation.

Shop decoration

We treat all wooden planks with antifungal agents and flame retardants, and then prime and cover with waterproof varnish or ordinary oil paint. Brickwork does not need additional finishing, as it looks quite beautiful and aesthetically pleasing on its own. If you still want to make it a different color, you can also paint with oil paint.

Video: how to make a bench for a country house yourself

If you make a bench made of wood and metal with your own hands, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor for many years and relax on it in the shade of fruit trees. With proper and timely care for such a wooden bench with metal or brick supports, it will serve for many years. But in order for it not to suffer from heavy rains or snow in winter or autumn, it is best to clean it indoors, if possible. Regular care can significantly extend the life of your bench in the garden.

With the onset of summer, it becomes impossible to sit in the house - you want to spend as much time as possible on the street. Today we will show you three ways to make benches with your own hands.

Your bench option will depend not only on the model you choose, but also on the materials available to you. After all, often a bench made with your own hands from improvised materials looks both neat and interesting.

Each bench option needs its own skills, but even someone who does not have special skills in working with the tool can easily make the first bench.

Do-it-yourself benches in half an hour

Here is an example of the simplest bench you can think of. With all the materials, such a bench is assembled in a matter of minutes!

All you need is eight cinder blocks with through holes, four pieces of wood, and construction adhesive. It is better to choose the bars according to the width of the holes in the blocks, but if they are a little narrower, then this is not a problem.

Be sure to sand the wood surfaces to avoid splinters.

Blocks and bars can be painted if desired to give the bench a more pleasant look.

It remains to install the blocks vertically, having previously lubricated the contacting side surfaces with glue, and insert the bars into the holes. Once the glue is dry, the bench is ready! Optionally, you can equip it with pillows: it will be more beautiful and comfortable.

How to make a wooden bench with a metal frame yourself

If you have at least minimal welding skills, then here is a project that will suit you. The bench stands on two metal supports and it turns out simple, but reliable. You will need a profile pipe or a thick plate for the supports and, of course, a wide seat board.

If you are far from welding, then you can assemble a metal frame on the corners and fasten it with metal screws.

After the bench is assembled, the metal legs should be treated with a metal primer that will protect them from corrosion and then painted with metal paint for outdoor use.

The wooden seat of the bench should be painted with varnish or paint for outdoor use. Such a simple version of the bench with your own hands will serve you for many years.

You can experiment and create your own bench design. For example, such a laconic designer bench is quite within your power. it is done in exactly the same way.

How to make a bench with a back

It is easy to attach a back to a bench standing on metal supports.

To do this, you need to take metal plates and bend them at the right angle. This is easy to do even with your hands, or you can fix the edge of the plate and bend it with a hammer. The plates will act as a support for the back. With one end we fix the plates from below under the seat, and fasten the back to the other end.

It is better to drown the bolts on the back (and on the seat too) into the tree so that they do not create discomfort.

If you don’t want to mess around like that, then you can use bolts with a round cap.

A more advanced backrest solution is to attach it to the frame rather than the seat. This design is definitely more reliable.

To do this, you will have to weld some parts at an angle, because it is more convenient to sit on a bench with an inclined back. And this requires great care.

There are special devices that allow you to fix the parts to be welded at the right angle - they are called magnetic holders or positioners.

But there is also a "folk" method. Make a wooden blank and attach the parts to it while welding. So you can weld the required number of supports, accurately maintaining the same angle.

It remains to attach the back to the frame, and the bench is ready!

DIY benches from old furniture

Old unnecessary furniture can still serve us in the country. You can practically make benches yourself.

We do not throw out an unnecessary crib, but we make a bench out of it with our own hands. One of the backs of the bed will be the back of the bench. The second backrest is divided into two parts: the lower part is the lower front part of the bench; the upper part is divided into two parts and serves as a bench handrail. The bench has a convenient storage box for pillows.

The wooden bench has been converted from a regular sized bed. Provide a small box for storing pillows in the seat, then you will not have to carry pillows from home all the time and come up with places to store these pillows.

Run out of beds? You can make a bench with your own hands from an old shelf - they painted it and made a pillow, that's all the work. But this simple shop can turn almost into a throne if you have an old unnecessary door in stock. From it you can make a beautiful high back for a bench. By the way, old wooden windows can be adapted for the same purposes.

Even if you don’t have a single board, you can still make a bench for your favorite cottage!

That's all! Simple do-it-yourself benches can be made in just a few hours, while not spending much on materials. And it will definitely become a favorite vacation spot for the whole family. After all, it is so nice to read, drink tea, chat with friends or even work on the bench, taking your laptop with you!
