Basic evening prayers for future sleep. Prayers for future sleep. Evening prayers. Orthodox prayer book

When going to sleep, a believer needs to prepare for the coming night and the day to come. Prayers for the future sleep (evening) - summing up the spiritual result of the day lived in order to strengthen a person for life according to the commandments, to avoid repeating mistakes and sins. Initially, this rule was written in the Church Slavonic language, but for convenience it was translated into a more understandable one. In Russian and the following appeals are presented, the correct accents are highlighted.

Ecclesiastical

You need to start like this:

Holy Spirit

Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, abiding everywhere and filling everything with Himself, Giver of good things and life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all defilement, and save our souls, O Good One.

After the opening lines have been read (before the Lord's Prayer), the mercy of Heaven is invoked, and the troparia should be read.

Lord's Prayer

Tropari

Reading these words 12 times in the morning and in the evening symbolically means the consecration of every hour of the day.

Three evening chants are performed, directed to each of the Persons of the Holy Trinity.

Prayer texts

In his address to God the Father, the Monk Macarius the Great (IV century) teaches people to pray to the Heavenly King that the Almighty would forgive the sins that were committed during the past day, that the Lord would help people to spend the night and, in a state of humility and reverence, enter the coming day.

Saint Macarius the Great, to God the Father, first

The second petition to God the Son was compiled by the Monk Antiochus, a Syrian ascetic of the 5th century - the experience of comprehending the perfection of the Creator as a Good Shepherd. Here the deep sinfulness of human nature is recognized (“ the seed of aphids is in me ") and expresses the hope that the soul will be saved. Here, the enlightenment of the mind and heart is requested with the purity of the Divine Word, soul, body, and the fearlessness of Christ. In conclusion, "humility of thought" is asked.

Saint Antiochus, to our Lord Jesus Christ, the second

The meaning of the third psalm - to God the Holy Spirit, is approximately the following: during the passing day, mortals committed many sins, which gave rise to despondency, and I lost peace in my soul. Here, pardon is asked, so that the conscience of people is clear, and they can praise the name of the Creator.

Saint Ephraim the Syrian to the Holy Spirit, the third

The readiness of a person to appear before the Almighty and tomorrow is expressed in the following four chants (from 4 to 7). The fourth was created by Macarius the Great, and the fifth - by the great teacher of the church, St. John Chrysostom (347-407).

The latter is especially interesting because it contains 24 petitions - according to the number of hours in a day. The Orthodox ask the Creator for many mercies in order to do good in life, good dreams, in which there are no nightmares and bad thoughts, and in the morning to be heard that they have repented, to become firm in good thoughts, so that the will of the Most High may be accomplished in sinful people.

Macarius the Great, fourth

The fifth

Sixth

John Chrysostom, seventh

(24 requests according to the number of hours in a day)

In the eighth, the intercession for people before the Lord is asked from the Mother of God, the Angels and the union of the revered sages. Everyone strives to imitate their holiness, the ability to be humble. Man's hope for mercy is strengthened by the words of the Creator himself that He does not wish the sinner death, but wants the sinner to take the true path and remain alive.

To our Lord Jesus Christ, the eighth

The ninth petition (of St. Peter the Studite, VIII-IX centuries) and the tenth, which are addressed to the Virgin Mary, for Her prayers help people "to love the law of God" and strengthen their will, so that everyone would live "in the command of Her Son" and be able to get into the Kingdom Heavenly.

Peter Studiyskiy, ninth

Holy Mother of God, tenth

Good King Mother, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Thy prayers guide me to good deeds, so that the rest of my life will pass without blemish and I will find Paradise by Thee, Virgin Mary, one Pure and the Blessed One.

In the eleventh petition, addressed to the Guardian Angel, patronage of the soul and body, protection from the crafty attacks of the devil is invoked; the need for a purified repentance of the heart is expressed not to offend the Most High with a single sin.

Guardian Holy Angel, eleventh

Then a wonderful thanksgiving hymn to the Virgin Mary is read - Kontakion "To the Climbed Voevoda ...". This hymn was compiled by Patriarch Sergius of Constantinople in connection with the miraculous intercession of the Orthodox Byzantine Empire from the invasion of the Persians and Avars in 626. The inspirational hymn "To the Elevated Voevoda ..." was included in the then existing Akathist of the Mother of God.

The end of the evening prayer is preceded by the reading of a short liturgy of St. John the Great (IX century). Seventy years of his almost 100-year existence, he spent in monastic exploits, knew the Psalter by heart, read the Psalms, adding this small but touching verse to each chant: "My hope, Father ..."

Saint John

However, the evening canon itself does not end there.

The doxology of St. John of Damascus (VIII-IX centuries) reminds us that the bed of the night's rest can unexpectedly turn out to be a coffin for us, and therefore everyone should intensify repentance. The danger of spiritual death is great, the people constantly walk “in the midst of the nets of many,” from which only the grace and mercy of the Most High can save, therefore it is worth resorting to His ineffable mercy.

Saint John of Damascus

Then, having baptized himself (in some prayer books it is indicated that you need to baptize your bed, as well as around the four cardinal points), the Orthodox Christian turns to the Honorable Cross of the Lord. This is how our faith in its power, the power of the sign of the cross is expressed, demons are driven away.

Turning to the Cross of the Lord, we call it Life-giving, for the Cross is an incomprehensible and invincible power: Jesus Christ was killed on it as on an altar as a propitiation for our sins and by this helped people get rid of eternal death, opened the way to Heaven for them. There is also a short version of this psalm.

Or short:

Protect me, Lord, with the strength of Thy Honest and Life-giving Cross, and keep me from all evil.

The short praise "Loosen up, leave ..." is associated with a request for everyone and for everything. Following the call of the Savior and his ascetics, who fervently prayed for their enemies, a Christian turns to the Almighty with entreaties for those who hate us and have ever offended us, praying further about their relatives and good friends, about the sick and traveling, about benefactors, about already departed from the earthly world ...

Weaken, let go, forgive, God, our sins, voluntary and involuntary, committed by word and deed, consciously and unconsciously, day and night, in mind and thought - forgive us everything, as Merciful and Human-loving.

Falling asleep, a Christian thinks that everyone will someday have to answer for his deeds in life at the Judgment Seat of God, and celebrates the confessional liturgy to the Heavenly King. Some sins are enumerated, to one degree or another inherent in very many people, and sincere repentance is offered.

Everything ends with going to sleep: the prayer book prescribes to utter a short prayer that transfers the soul of everyone “into the hands of the Creator” - to His Will.

Short

In Thy hand, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit: Thou bless me, Thou shalt have mercy on me, and grant me everlasting life. Amen

The above divine services in the union give very strong protection, purify thoughts, resist nightmares. Try to use the full prayer word at night.

Prayer rule of St. Seraphim of Sarov

A modern person, surrounded by bustle, work and worries, does not often manage to devote proper time to the evening or morning routine. Realizing this, the Monk Seraphim of Sarov (1757-1833), who lived not so long ago in relation to the main revered saints and watched the life of people from different classes, compiled for us a canon, which is more accessible, in a short version.

A short version of the evening rule is:

  • prayers of the Lord (read three times)
  • Songs of the Blessed Virgin Mary (read three times)
  • Symbol of Faith (read once)

These psalms to the Creator are the basic principles of faith and humility for every Orthodox Christian. Also, during the day, you need to mentally, as an option, quietly, barely audibly read Our Father. Its short version is also possible - "Lord, have mercy." After Mass and before you are going to go to bed, Seraphim of Sarov recommends turning to the Ever-Virgin, repeating as much as possible the words "Most Holy Theotokos, save me."

Compliance with the canons of the evening liturgy will help both adults and children find a peaceful sleep.

After a hard day or being under stress for a long time, people often have nightmares, bad dreams. This indicates the overload of the body, its stressful state, experiences. They say that so that what you see does not come true, when you wake up, you need to tell someone as soon as possible everything that you dreamed. At the same time, try to remember as many details as possible. And in the evening of the same day, during prayers for the coming sleep, read the service to the Creator, which will protect from nightmares.

From nightmares

In addition to the above methods of getting rid of nightmares, you can use a conspiracy or a special ritual.

It is important to remember that there is no need to mention intentions anywhere. After all, the main force of the conspiracy is faith.

Waking up from a nightmare at night, you must say three times

“Wherever it is night, there is a dream. Amen".

Apply the sign of the cross three times. If it's summer, you can say these words through an open window or window. Water washes away negativity - take a sip of water. It is also necessary to change the position in which you sleep, for example, if you slept on your back - lie on your side, etc. It will be useful to change bedding or at least change clothes on the wrong side.

Water - cleans. When you wake up, tell the bad vision to the water: in the shower or by turning on the tap. Then say the text:

"Water, wash away all sorrows and troubles", "Where there is water, there is sleep."

Making a dream catcher

This is a very powerful ritual object, it appeared among the ancient Indians. In addition, this amulet will help "neutralize" bad dreams, and bring positive changes to life. Now you can buy a similar trinket in stores, but it is better to make it yourself, while investing only good thoughts.

Optina elders

Helpful Tips From Clergy:

  • The singing of the Optina elders has a beneficial effect on us when listening. This monastery is famous for wise elders who foresee the fate of a person. When we listen to their chants, we tune in to the true path, we become humble and submissive to our fate.
  • The Orthodox Church does not prohibit viewing videos with church content. But you should take this kind of information very seriously and morally. While you watch or listen to something like that, you should concentrate as much as possible on what is being voiced and postpone the rest of the business.
  • The clergy recommend reading the prayers of the Optina elders in the evening. They are already many centuries old, therefore they carry in themselves wisdom that can explain the foundations of Orthodoxy and the need for faith in God.

Prayer 1, Saint Macarius the Great, to God the Father

Eternal God and the King of every creature, having made me worthy even at this hour of age, forgive my sins, I have also done this day in deed, word and thought, and cleanse, Lord, my humble soul from all defilement of flesh and spirit. And deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and the lusts of the wicked. If I swear by Thy name, or swindled in my thoughts; or someone reproached; or slander someone with my anger, or grieved, or about anything you were angry; or a lie, or useless spah, or a beggar came to me, and despise him; or who were saddened by my brother, or weddings, or whom they condemned; either puffed up, or puffed up, or outraged; or I stand in prayer, my mind has moved about the wickedness of this world, or the corruption of thoughts; or overeat, or overeat, or laughing madly; or evil thoughts, or seeing alien kindness, and with that he was wounded by his heart; or not like verbs, or laughing at my brother's sin, but my essence is countless sins; either they are not happy about prayer, or otherwise what deceitful things, I don’t remember, that’s all and great about these things.

Prayer of Saint John Damascene

Vladyka Chelovek, will this coffin be a bed for me, or will you enlighten my cursed soul in the daytime? Seven is the coffin, seven is death. Thy judgment, O Lord, I fear and endless torment, but I do not cease doing evil: I always anger the Lord my God, and Thy Most Pure Mother, and all Heavenly powers, and my holy Guardian Angel. We, O Lord, for I am not worthy of Thy love for mankind, but I am worthy of all condemnation and torment. But, Lord, either I want, or I don’t want, save me. If you save the righteous, nothing great; and if you have mercy purely, it is nothing wondrous: deserve the essence of your mercy. But amaze Thy mercy on me as a sinner: about this, reveal Thy love of mankind, may my malice not prevail over Thy ineffable goodness and mercy: and as you like, arrange a thing about me.

Enlighten my eyes, Christ God, but not when I fall asleep into death, and not when my enemy says: strengthen yourself against him.

Glory: Wake up the protector of my soul, O God, as in the midst of many nets I walk; deliver me from them and save me, Blazhe, like a Man-lover.

And now: the Most Glorious Mother of God, and the Holy Angel of the Saints, let us sing incessantly with our hearts and lips, confessing this Mother of God, as if she truly gave birth to God for us, incarnate, and praying incessantly for our souls.

Mark yourself with the cross and say a prayer to the Honest Cross:

May God rise again, and scatter Him, and let those who hate Him flee from His presence. Yako smoke disappears, yes disappear; as if wax melts from the face of fire, so let demons perish from the face of those who love God and are marked by the sign of the cross, and in joy say: Rejoice, Most Honorable and Life-giving Cross of the Lord, drive away demons by the power of the prophesied Lord Jesus Christ on you, who descended into hell and corrected the power to the devil, and who gave us to you His Honest Cross to drive out every adversary. Oh, Most Honorable and Life-giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Lady the Virgin Mary and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Or in short:

Protect me, Lord, by the power of the Honest and Life-giving Your Cross, and save me from all evil.

Prayer

Weaken, forgive, forgive, God, our sins, voluntary and involuntary, even in word and in deed, even in knowledge and not in knowledge, even in days and nights, even in mind and in thought: forgive us all, as it is Good and Humanitarian.

Prayer

Forgive those who hate and offend us, Lord, Human-loving. Beneficent beneficence. To our brothers and relatives, grant also petitions and eternal life for salvation. Visit the weak in existence and grant healing. Along the way, manage it. Travel travelers. Grant forgiveness to those who serve and have mercy on us sins. Those who have commanded us unworthy to pray for them have mercy according to your great mercy. Remember, O Lord, the father and our brethren before the dead and rest them, where the light of Thy face is present. Remember, Lord, our captive brethren and spare me from every situation. Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good in Your holy churches, and give them even petition for salvation and eternal life. Remember, Lord, and us, the humble and sinful and unworthy of Thy servant, and enlighten our mind with the light of Thy mind, and guide us on the path of Thy commandments, with the prayers of our Most Pure Lady Our Lady and Ever-Virgin Mary and all Thy saints: as you are blessed forever and ever ... Amen.

Everyday confession of sins

I confess to Thee to the Lord my God and Creator, in the One Holy Trinity, glorified and worshiped, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, all my sins, the same in all the days of my life, and for every hour, both now and in days gone by and nights, deed, word, thought, gluttony, drunkenness, secret eating, idle talk, despondency, laziness, disobedience, disobedience, slander, condemnation, negligence, self-esteem, many acquisitiveness, embezzlement, untruthfulness, profanity, jealousy, jealousy , hatred, covetousness and all my feelings: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and my other sins, both soulful and bodily, the image of my God and Creator to anger, and my neighbor's unjust: regretting about these, I am guilty of myself to my God I imagine, and I have the will to repent: to that, O Lord my God, help me, with tears I humbly pray to Thee: whoever passed away my sins by Thy mercy, forgive me, and permit me from all these, even the words before you, as good and lover of mankind.

When you go to sleep, say:

In Thy hand, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commit my spirit: You bless me, You have mercy on me and give me an eternal life. Amen.

Tropari

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us; every answer is bewildering, this Ti prayer as if to the Lord of sin we bring: have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us, in You with hope; Do not be angry with us, remember our iniquities below, but look after us and now, as if you are well-to-do, and deliver us from our enemies; Thou art our God, and we are Thy people, all works Thy hand, and we call on Thy name.

Open the doors of mercy to us, Blessed Mother of God, who hope in Thee may not perish, but may we get rid of Thy troubles: Thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

Bewildered at any answer - not finding any justification for themselves (be puzzled - not knowing what to do, being unskilful; the word answer here is the translation of the Greek word "defense", "justification" - cf. Russian: "call to account").

We have hoped for you - because we relied on you (so in the Greek text of the prayer; upovahom - the 1st person plural form of the past tense - aorista - the verb hope; the Church Slavonic version means: we hoped in you). Zelo is strong. Below - and not. Yako is benevolent - because You are merciful. We are us. All your deeds are Thy hand - we are all the creations of Thy hands (a dash would shine through this expression: after the Greek original, the Slavic translation omitted the verb-linkage, it would sound in full form: all the deeds Thy hand; Thy hand - the form gives birth to the case of doubles . numbers).

By you - in meaning: through you.

These troparia are the creation of the Monk John Damascene.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)

Prayer 1, Saint Macarius the Great, to God the Father

Eternal God and the King of every creature, vouching for me even at this hour of age, forgive my sins, I have also done this day in deed, word and thought; and cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from all defilement of flesh and spirit. And let me, Lord, in the night this dream pass in peace, but rise from the humble bed, delight in Thy holy name in all the days of my life, and I will overcome the fleshly and incorporeal enemies who fight me. Deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and the lusts of the wicked. Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Even at this hour of reach - to live up to this hour (to reach - to reach). I have also created - which I have created (made). The humble one is here: pitiful, worthless (protect yourself from the terrible danger of false humility and proud recognition of yourself as humble!). To pass this dream into the night - to sleep through this night, to "go through the field" of this night's sleep. From the humble bed (in some prayer books: from my humble bed) - from my pitiful, meager bed (humble often means: "low, base" even in a simple physical sense). Popper - I will overcome, trample. Evil desires - evil desires.

And deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and the lusts of the wicked. With these words of the prayer, other words from the teaching of the Monk Macarius about prayer echo in a peculiar way: “The true basis of prayer is this: to be attentive to thoughts and to pray in great silence and peace. , then cut off, and aspire with thought to God and not fulfill the desire for thoughts, but collect whirling thoughts from everywhere together, distinguishing between natural thoughts and evil ones. trees, therefore, intending to pass by this place should stretch out their hands and with effort and with difficulty push the branches before themselves.Like the soul is surrounded by a whole forest of thoughts inspired by the resistance by force. "

Prayer 2, Saint Antiochus to our Lord Jesus Christ

To the Almighty, the Word of the Father, Jesus Christ Himself is perfect, many for the sake of Thy mercy, never absent from me, Thy servant, but always rest in me. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not betray me to sedition to the serpent, and do not leave the desire of the Satan to me, for there is a seed of aphid in me. Thou, O Lord God worshiped, the Holy King, Jesus Christ, while sleeping, save me with an unmixing light, Thy Holy Spirit, Thou hast sanctified Thy disciples. Grant, O Lord, also to me, Thy unworthy servant, Thy salvation on my couch; enlighten my mind with the light of the mind of Thy holy Gospel, my soul with the love of Thy Cross, my heart with the purity of Thy word, my body with Thy passionless passion; preserve my thought with Thy humility, and raise me up in time like Thy praise. Like you were glorified with Thy beginningless Father and with the Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

Himself is perfect - being Himself perfect (this is a participle from the verb to be: being, being). Cramole - excitement, confusion, rebellion. Satan's desire is Satan's will (Satan's will). The seed of aphids is the seed of destruction. Flicker-free - unfading. Give - give. By the light of reason - here: the light of understanding. Your passionless passion - Your suffering, alien to passion. Time is similar - appropriate time.

Prayer 3, to the Holy Spirit

Lord, the Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Soul of Truth, have mercy and have mercy on Thy sinful servant, and let me go to the unworthy, and forgive all, the Tree of Ty who has sinned today like a man, moreover and not like a man, but rather cattle, my free sins and involuntary , led and unknown; Even from youth and from science they are evil, and even the essence is from arrogance and despondency. If I swear by Thy name, or swindled in my thoughts; or someone reproached; or slander someone with my anger, or grieved, or about anything you were angry; or a lie, or useless spah, or a beggar came to me, and despise him; or who were saddened by my brother, or weddings, or whom they condemned; either puffed up, or puffed up, or outraged; or I stand in prayer, my mind has moved about the wickedness of this world, or the corruption of thoughts; or overeat, or overeat, or laughing madly; or a crafty thought, or seeing someone else's kindness, and that was wounded by the heart, or not like verbs, or laughing at my brother's sin, but my essence is countless sins; either they are not happy about prayer, or otherwise what deceitful things, I don’t remember, that’s all and great about these things. Have mercy on me, my Creator, Master, your despondent and unworthy servant, and leave me, and let me go, and forgive me, as it is good and a lover of mankind; let me lie down in peace, sleep and rest, prodigal, sinful and accursed I; and I will worship, and I will sing, and I will glorify Your most glorious name, with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now and forever, and forever. Amen.

All the trees that have sinned - everything in which I have sinned before You (everything, the tree - everything, how many; those who have sinned - I have sinned). Today - today. Much more - and more than that. Grief is worse, bitter. Even more - which. From youth - from youth, from a young age (and not "because of youth"). From science evil - from evil teaching. From insolence - from shamelessness, insolence. If - if. Swear - I swore. Blasphemed e - blasphemed him (further in the prayer a number of verbs follow in the form of the 1st person of the past tense - aorist; reproach - I reproached; slander - I slandered; grieved - I saddened, etc.). Useless - at the wrong time. Svadikh - incited quarrels, quarreled with someone. Standing in prayer - when I was standing in prayer. Having moved about the deceit of this world - striving towards the worldly (towards the lies of this world). The crafty is evil, evil. Seeing someone else's kindness - seeing someone else's beauty (or good qualities in general: kindness means both external beauty and perfection in general). I was wounded by my heart - by it I was wounded in my heart. Inappropriate to verbs - spoke inappropriate, obscene. My essence is countless sins - while my sins are countless. That's all and great about these things - because I did all this and more.

At the beginning of the prayer and at the end of it, despondency is mentioned among the causes of numerous sins: ... Forgive all, the tree of Ti sinned ... from despondency ... Have mercy on me, my Creator, Your Lord, your despondent and unworthy servant ... Despondency is one of the eight main passions, and the struggle with this passion is inevitable for every Christian.

"To the one who has come to prayer, this crafty spirit reminds of the necessary deeds and uses every trick in order to only distract us from the conversation with the Lord with some plausible pretext."

Venerable John the Larch

***

“The soul, wounded by the arrow of this ruinous passion, really falls asleep for any striving for virtue and observing our spiritual feelings ... he does not think anything else, how about food and a womb, until, having met somewhere a commonwealth in some man or woman, numb in the same coldness, he gets involved in their affairs and needs ... The main opposition to him will be: do not give in, sit down ".

Venerable John Cassian the Roman

"In every matter, determine the measure for yourself and do not leave it before you finish; also pray reasonably and intensely - and the spirit of despondency flees from you."

Reverend Nilus of Sinai

This prayer of repentance contains a list of the sins that we sin every day; for this daily repentance to be sincere, one must understand the essence of the sins confessed here, their connection and difference. Some of them deserve special mention.

... Even if I swear by Your name ... These are the words of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself: You have also heard what was said to the ancients: do not break your oath, but fulfill your oaths before the Lord. But I say to you: do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor the earth, for it is His footstool; nor Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King; Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. But let your word be: yes, yes; no no; and anything beyond this is from the evil one (Matthew 5: 33-37). Undoubtedly, the words of the evening confession of sins speak not only of an immediate oath, but also of any violation of the 3rd commandment of the Law of God - about God and the remembrance of the name of God in vain (note that the violation of this commandment refers to catechism and inattention in prayer - as pronouncing name of God in violation of reverence and deceit).

... Or blasphemy in my thinking ... These words confess blasphemy thoughts - disgusting, dirty thoughts and ideas that arise primarily during prayer and during worship.

"Whoever is disturbed by the spirit of blasphemy and who wants to get rid of him, let him know undoubtedly that his soul is not guilty of such thoughts, but an unclean demon ... Therefore, we, despising him and imputing his thoughts for nothing, say to him: Get away from Me , Satan: I will worship the Lord My God and serve Him alone (cf. Matthew 4:10); let your words turn to your head! "

"He who has triumphed over this passion has cast aside pride." "Let us stop judging and condemning our neighbor, and we will not be afraid of blasphemous thoughts: for the reason and root of the second is the first." Our attention and prayer-confession draws our attention to the same, internally connected with blasphemy, sins against our neighbor:

... Or who was reproached; or slandering someone with my anger, or grieving ... It speaks of a direct reproach (reproach), of passionate unjust condemnation (slander of someone with my anger); finally, even "just" and not directly expressed anger somehow grieves our neighbors (those who grieved). A prayer of repentance brings us to the root of these sins against our neighbor: ... or about what we are angry ... Anger is one of the eight main passions.

"Nothing hinders the coming of the Holy Spirit in us so much as anger."

Venerable John the Leaf-Man

***

"It is not useful to be angry, both without a reason, and for a good reason; for this is justly forbidden by the Lord (see: Matthew 5:22)."

Reverend Nilus of Sinai

***

Anger is permissible only against demons and against yourself: "Be angry with sin, that is, against yourself and the devil, so as not to sin against God."

Venerable Hesychius of Jerusalem

***

... Or they were saddened by my brother ... It would seem that this sin was just spoken of; but above it was a question of grief caused by manifestations of anger, and inattention, and foolishness, and simply my general sinfulness can grieve my brother.

... Or svdih ... Weddings - to quarrel, stir up discord.

... Or whom we have condemned ... Let us recall the words of the Apostle: Whoever speaks evil of a brother or judges his brother, that speaks evil of the law and judges the law; and if you judge the law, then you are not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one Lawgiver and Judge, who can save and destroy; and who are you who judge another? (James 4: 11-12).

... Either he got puffed up, or got puffed up, or got angry ... But it has already been said above: or what you got angry about; is it a repeat? Perhaps the prefix once - indicates a different quality, a different level of professed passion: a rather strong seizure of anger (being angry can also refer to a fleeting feeling).

... Or seeing someone else's kindness, and that was wounded by the heart ... Wounded by the heart - that is, he was wounded in the very heart, received a painful heart wound (ulcer). The ambiguity of the word kindness allows us to attribute this phrase both to the temptation of someone's external beauty (voluptuous thoughts, burning and painful), and to envy, always painful; apply these words to your own mental ulcer.

... Or laugh at my brother's sin, but my essence is countless sins ... Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not feel the beam in your eye? Or how will you say to your brother: "Let me take the speck out of your eye," and now, there is a log in your eye? Hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see how to remove the speck from your brother's eye (Matthew 7: 3-5).

Prayer 4, Saint Macarius the Great

What will Ti bring, or what will Ti reward, great-endowed Immortal King, more generous and benevolent God, as if he is lazy to me for Your pleasing, and having done nothing good, did you bring to the end of this past day, the conversion and salvation of the soul of my order? Mercifully wake me to the sinner and naked of every good deed, raise up my fallen soul, defiled in immeasurable sins, and take away from me all the evil thought of this visible life. Forgive my sins, the only Sinless One, even worse than those who have sinned in this day, by knowledge and ignorance, by word and deed, and by thought, and with all my senses. You Yourself, covering, save me from any opposing situation with Your Divine power, and inexpressible love of man, and power. Cleanse, God, cleanse the multitude of my sins. Grace, Lord, save me from the network of the evil one, and save my passionate soul, and overshadow me with the light of Thy face, when you come in glory, and now do not condemned to sleep in sleep, and without dreaming, and undisturbed the thought of Thy servant observe, and all Satan's work take me away from me, and enlighten my reasonable eyes of the heart, so that I will not fall asleep into death. And send me an angel of peace, the guardian and instructor of my soul and my body, that he may deliver me from my enemies; Yes, rising from my bed, I will bring Ti thanksgiving prayers. To her, Lord, hear me, a sinful and wretched servant of Thy, with delight and conscience; Grant me to learn with Thy word, and the despondency of the demons is far from me driven away from being Thy Angels; may I bless Your holy name, and glorify, and glorify the Most Pure Theotokos Mary, You gave us sinful intercession, and accept this one who is praying for us; vem bo, as if it imitates Your philanthropy, and praying does not cease. With your intercession, and the Honest Cross with a sign, and all Your saints for the sake of your saints, observe my poor soul, Jesus Christ, our God, as you are Holy, and glorified forever. Amen.

Great-gifted - sending down great gifts, generous. As if I am lazy for Your pleasing - that I, who am lazy to serve You. And nothing good has done - and has done nothing good. You have brought to the end - You have brought to the end. Mimoshedshago - the past. Building - here: arranging. To the naked of every good deed - devoid of any good deeds (the image of grace, as well as good deeds, like clothes that clothe a person, is repeated in the New Testament and very often in liturgical poetry and ascetic literature. Compare the words of God Almighty in the Apocalypse: Se, I go like a thief: blessed is he who is awake and keeps his clothes, so that he does not walk naked and so that they do not see his shame - Rev.16: 15).

Even those who have sinned - which I have sinned against You (even those who have sinned - I have sinned: the form of the 1st person singular of the Past tense - aorist). From every soprativnogo situation - from every onslaught of evil. Lukavago - here: Devil. Passionate - full of passions, subject to passions. When - when. Detal - business, activity. Drive away - drive away. To her - yes, indeed. Will and conscience - In the meaning. : in the expression of my will and in my conscience (will is arbitrariness, free will - and the conscience in this expression belongs to the praying person, comes from him). I will stand up - for me when I get up. Learn by Thy Word - to learn Thy law (the same expression in the morning prayer to the Most Holy Trinity). You gave Thou - which Thou didst give. We blow bo - for I know. Yako - what. Imitates - reinforces, appeals to (literally: nudges). Touya is Her.

Be pleased, Lord, to deliver me from the network of the evil one ... and to remove all Satan's work from me. Let us supplement these words of the prayer of the Monk Macarius the Great with words from his teaching: “The visible world, from kings to the poor, is all in confusion, in struggle, and none of them knows the reason ... all evil: he secretly acts on the inner person and on the mind and fights against him with thoughts; people do not know what they are doing, prompted by some alien force, on the contrary, they think that this is natural and that they are doing this according to their own reasoning. They who have the peace of Christ and the illumination of Christ know from where all this is raised. "

Prayer 5

O Lord our God, those who have sinned in the days of this word, deed and thought, forgive me the Good and the Lover of Man. Peaceful sleep and serene grant me. Send Thy Guardian Angel, covering and keeping me from all evil; as you are the keeper of our souls and our bodies, and we give glory to Thee, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Hedgehogs of those who have sinned - in what I have sinned. Yako - how. Mi - to me. Yako Thou art - because Thou art.

Prayer 6

O Lord our God, in Worthless faith, and His name more than any name we call, grant to us, who depart to sleep, weakened soul and body, and keep us from all dreams, and besides dark sweets; abate the striving of the passions, quench the incitement of the bodily uprising. May we live chastely in deeds and words; Yes, a virtuous life is receptive, we will not fall away from the promised, Your good ones, for you are blessed forever. Amen.

More - more. Relief for weakness. Dark sweetness except - unaffected by impure lust (sweetness - sensual pleasure, lust; except - outside). Charge - calm down, stop. Perceiving - accepting, receiving back (note that the word itself indicates a return to an undefiled way of life!). Promised - promised. The good are good.

This evening prayer is all directed towards chastity, towards the confrontation between lust and dark sweetness. Expressions such as: the desire for passions and incitement to the uprising of the corporeal should not be translated into modern Russian: they are clearer in Church Slavonic, because they indicate the whole worldview imprinted in them. Modern Christians live in a world literally engulfed in prodigal madness, so even for a married layman striving to live with God, the struggle to live chastely through deeds and words is in its own way no less intense than for a monk. Prayer is an irreplaceable weapon in this struggle.

Prayer 7, St. John Chrysostom (24 prayers, according to the number of hours of the day and night)

Lord, do not deprive me of Thy heavenly goods. Lord, save me eternal torment. Lord, whether in mind or thought, in word or deed, those who have sinned, forgive me. Lord, deliver me from all ignorance and forgetfulness, and cowardice, and petrified insensibility. Lord, deliver me from every temptation. Lord, enlighten my heart, hedgehog darken the crafty lust. Lord, I am like a man who have sinned, You, like God, have mercy on me, seeing the weakness of my soul. Lord, send your grace to help me, that I may glorify your holy name. Lord Jesus Christ, write me Thy servant in the bottom of the animals, and grant me a good end. O Lord my God, even if I have done nothing good before Thee, grant me, by Thy grace, to initiate a good one. Lord, sprinkle in my heart the dew of Thy grace. O Lord of heaven and earth, remember me, Thy sinful servant, cold and unclean, in Thy Kingdom. Amen.

Those who have sinned, I have sinned (the past tense is aorist). Hedgehogs - which darkened (darkened - also aorist, but the shape of the 3rd person). In the bottom of the animals - in the book of life. As if and nothing good you have done - although I have done nothing good. Studnago - vile (literally: shameful; student - shame).

Lord, accept me in repentance. Lord, don't leave me. Lord, do not lead me to attack. Lord, give me a thought for good. Lord, give me tears, and mortal memory, and tenderness. Lord, give me the thought of confessing my sins. Lord, grant me humility, chastity and obedience. Lord, grant me patience, generosity and meekness. Lord, instill in me the root of good, Thy fear in my heart. Lord, make me love Thee from all my soul and thoughts, and do Thy will in everything. Lord, protect me from some people, and demons, and passions, and from all other inappropriate things. Lord, weigh, as you do, as you will, may your will be done and a sinner in me, as you are blessed forever. Amen.

The root of the good is the root (that is, the basis) of all that is good, of all good. Vesi - You know (You know). As you do, as you will, that you do what you want.

The great teacher of prayer, Saint Theophan the Recluse, attached great importance to these prayers and recommended them to many of his spiritual children as the basis of the prayer rule, as a school of unceasing contemplation of God. Here are some excerpts from his letters:

"How to read the prayers of St. Chrysostom (24 in evening prayers for sleep)? Read them before prayer, so that attention is gathered together ... But repeat mentally at any time. This is the best way to accustom yourself to remembering God, and remembering this is the basis of spiritual life . To lay down bows, and sometimes to bow down to earth. " - “You can use the prayers of Saint Chrysostom instead of your home rule in the morning. Memorize them and ponder every one ... In them, the whole spiritual life is remembered ... How many times to remember each - define it so that you stand in prayer as much as you usually idle on the rule. You can also attach your prayers to them - choose from the psalms: which rhyme is to your heart, write it down ... Using these prayers on the rule with attention, soon get used to standing at prayer undistractedly. Insert the Jesus Prayer into their midst. For example, saying ten times: "Lord , do not deprive me of Thy heavenly blessings ", - attach:" Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. "-" The purpose of short prayers is to facilitate the collection of thoughts and sobriety. Strength is not in words, but in a feeling for God. It will soon form among the working people over prayer. This is smart prayer. The mind, standing in the heart, beholds God and intelligently confesses to Him by calling Him ... Feeling for God is unceasing prayer without words. "

Prayer 8, to our Lord Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, for the sake of Thy Most Honest Mother, and Thy incorporeal Angel, Thy Prophet and Forerunner and Thy Baptist, God-speaking apostle, bright and good-victorious martyr, reverend and God-bearing father, and all saints with prayers, save me the demon of the real thing. To her, my Lord and Creator, not even though the death of a sinner, but as if to turn and live to be him, give me a conversion to the accursed and unworthy; Take me out of the mouth of the pernicious serpent, which is gaping to devour me and bring me to hell alive. To her, my Lord, my consolation, For me, for the sake of the accursed in corruptible flesh, she was clothed, pull me out of curse, and comfort my soul with accursedness. Put in my heart to do Your commands, and abandon the crafty deeds, and receive Your blessedness: in You, Lord, hope, save me.

The real situation of the demonic - the current environment of demons, demonic siege. Not even - not wanting. But as if to turn and live being to him - but so that he turned and was alive. Gaping devour me - open mouth to swallow me (gap - open mouth). Like ... clothed - clothed.

... Not even though the death of a sinner, but as if to turn and live to be him ... The prayer quotes the words of the Lord from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel: I do not want the death of a sinner, but the hedgehog to turn to the wicked from his path and live his being (Ezek. 33: 11). Here is this verse in the Russian translation of the Bible: Tell them: I live, says the Lord God: I do not want the death of the sinner, but that the sinner turn from his path and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways; why should you die, house of Israel?

Prayer 9, to the Most Holy Theotokos, Peter of Studios

To Thee of the Most Holy Mother of God, I cursed, falling down, I pray: weigh, Tsarina, as if I sin without ceasing and anger Thy Son and my God, and if I repent many times, I find myself lying before God, and I repent trembling: is it possible that the Lord will strike me and pack up hourly I create: lead this, my Lady, the Mother of God, I pray, have mercy, and strengthen, and do good, and grant me. Vesi bo, my Lady Theotokos, as by no means an imam in my evil deeds in hatred, and with all my thoughts I love the law of my God; but we do not blow, the Most Pure Lady, from where I don’t hate, that I love, but I transgress the good. Do not allow, O Most Pure, my will to be accomplished, it is not pleasing to eat, but let the will of Thy Son and my God be done: may it save me, and give me understanding, and grant me the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that from now on the foul act would cease, and so on would have lived in command Thy Son, all glory, honor and power befitting Him, with His Beginning Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Vesi - You know. And if I repent many times, I find myself lying before God - and although I repent many times, I turn out to be unfaithful to God (I deceive God). Every time I create packs, I do the same again. Leading this - knowing this. Do good and give me - to do good and give me. Yako is by no means an imam in hatred - which I absolutely hate. My wicked one is mine wicked. We don’t blow - I don’t know. Where I don’t hate, that’s the one I love — for some reason, what I hate is what I love (literally: from where [those things] that I hate are those I love). Good - good. Yes, from now on, foul deeds cease - so that from now on I will cease evil deeds. The rest will continue. If he lived, he would live.

This prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos is the cry of a man who knows how little his will for good can resist sin. And repentance, completely sincere, and love with all thought for the law of God, and hatred for evil deeds by themselves are not capable of saving a person from slavery to sin. The words of this prayer are close to the words of the Apostle Paul: ... I am carnal, sold to sin. For I do not understand what I am doing: because I do not do what I want, but what I hate, I do. If I do what I do not want, then ... it is no longer I who do that, but sin living in me. For I know that the good does not live in me, that is, in my flesh; because the desire for good is in me, but I do not find it to do it. The good that I want I don’t do, but the evil I don’t want I do. But if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do that, but the sin that dwells in me. And so I find the law that when I want to do good, evil belongs to me. For in the inner man I find pleasure in the law of God; but in my members I see another law, opposing the law of my mind and making me a captive to the law of sin which is in my members (Rom. 7: 14-23). To overcome and conquer the law of sin is possible only with God's help, the power of God's grace, about which we cry in our prayers.

Prayer 10, to the Most Holy Theotokos

Blessed King, good Mother, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul, and with Thy prayers instruct me to do good; Yes, the rest of my life will pass without blemish, and by You I will find paradise, Virgin Mary, one Pure and Blessed.

Passionate - 1) subject to passions; 2) unhappy, suffering; both meanings are combined here. My belly - my life. By you - here: by your help, through you. If I find it, I will find it.

Prayer 11, to the Holy Guardian Angel

To the Angel of Christ, my saint guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me all, the tree of those who sinned in this day, and save me from all cunning of the enemy, so that in no sin I will anger my God; but pray for me a sinful and unworthy slave, as if I was worthy to show the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity, and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ, and all the saints. Amen.

All the fir tree that have sinned is everything in which I have sinned (fir tree - how much). The present is the present. From all guile - from all lies, all tricks. Opposite mi - opposing, opposing me. In no sin - no sin. Show me worthy - show me worthy.

Kontakion to the Most Holy Theotokos

To the chosen Voevoda, victorious, as if we will get rid of the wicked, we will grateful to Ty Thy Rabbi, the Mother of God, but like the one who has an invincible power, freedom from all our troubles, so we call Ty: Rejoice, Bride Unmarried.

Climbed Voivode - invincible Voivode (climbed - invincible in battle - battles). Victorious - victorious (singing, that is, a victory song). As if we will get rid of the wicked - because we got rid of (literally: as those who got rid of) evil (from troubles). Thanksgiving - thanksgiving (song of thanks). We write Tee - we chant (literally: we write) to You. As a possessing power - (You), as having power. Unmarried - unmarried (literal translation of the Greek word).

The Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, beginning with this kontakion, was written in the 7th century in Constantinople. This is the first (and most beautiful) of the akathists, which became a model for all subsequent ones. All 12 ikos of the akathist end with multiple "rehearsals" of the Archangel's greeting to the Blessed Virgin - "Rejoice!" We magnify the heavenly purity of the Inexperienced Virgin, who inexpressibly gave birth to Christ our God, and in Her purity the "Honest Cherub" the Unmarried Bride appears before us as the greatest warrior with the forces of evil - the Climbed Voivode, having an invincible power.

Rejoice, Unbride Bride! If we turn to the Greek language in which the akathist is written, we will see that all these three words, literally translated into Church Slavonic and entered into our religious consciousness, should have been perceived by the Greeks somewhat differently than we perceive them.

Rejoice - the greeting of the Archangel Gabriel conveyed to us by the Gospel - both before the Nativity of Christ and after it was a common greeting in Greek - the same as our "hello". In the appearance of the Angel, in his wondrous and mysterious words, the inner meaning of the greeting, forgotten in everyday life, of course, was renewed and shone with all power; an akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos (and any later inspired akathist), all permeated with this "Rejoice!" and sparkling with the joy of magnificence, it also resurrects the meaning of the Greek word that is dormant in everyday language. But in the Russian (and Old Russian) language, they greeted each other not with the word "rejoice", but with the word "hello" (in which we usually forget the wishes of health). "Rejoice" remains for us a word always more intense, special - a conscious word about joy, a unique greeting for the Most Pure Virgin Mary and the saints of God.

The Unmarried Bride is a direct, literal translation of two Greek words. Church Slavonic bride corresponds to the Greek word "nymph", which means not only a girl-bride, but also a newlywed wife, and a young woman. The New Testament (and the Greek translation of the Bible) gave this word a tremendous mystical depth: the Bride of the Lamb in the Revelation of John the Theologian (Rev. 19: 7; 21, 22, 17) is not only intended for Him, but also stands with Him in a mysterious marriage; this is the image of both the Mother of God and the Church (in her we recognize the bride of the Song of Songs and other books of Scripture). And the Greek word, translated by the Slavic word unmarried, is the negative form from the first word, meaning "unmarried"; this word was quite common in the Greek language. For Greek, but not for Slavic! Indeed, in Slavic, the bride is precisely the unknown, unknown (that is, exactly what the Greek is not bride) girl who did not marry, although she was destined for him; the word itself carries the meaning of purity. Within the Slavic language, the word unbelievable is difficult to explain. It brings a new shade of meaning to the expression of the akathist: Pure Bride, but - Unmarried, not ordinary, not comparable to any other bride.

Other Slavic epithets of the Virgin, corresponding to the word Unmarried, are Unmarried, Unskilled.

The victorious voivode ... These words are almost all of us used to perceive by ear as a single whole, therefore we do not feel the structure of the phrase (simple enough): (to whom?) (why?) as if we will get rid of the wicked - as we got rid of troubles.

Glorious Ever-ever, Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to Thy Son and our God, that Thou mayst save our souls.

I place all my hope in You, Mother of God, keep me under Your roof.

Virgin Mary, do not despise me a sinner, demanding Your help and Your intercession, my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.

By you - here: through you, by your intercession. Under cover - under cover.

The prayers "Most glorious ever since ..." and "All my hope ..." are the creations of the Monk John Damascene.

Prayer of St. John

My hope is the Father, my refuge Son, my cover is the Holy Spirit: Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

The creator of this prayer, St. John the Great, repeated it after each verse of the psalms he recited on the canon, thus constantly raising the mind to the Most Holy Trinity.

End of prayers

It is worthy to eat as truly blessed Thee, Mother of God, Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and Mother of our God. The most honorable Cherubim and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption, we magnify the Mother of God.

Glory, and now:

Lord have mercy. (Three times)

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Thy Most Pure Mother, venerable and God-bearing father of ours and all saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

We see that after those prayers that are final in the section "Morning Prayers" and are marked with the words "End of Prayers", in the section "Prayers for the future sleep" (in most prayer books) there are some more prayers that are more directly related to going to sleep. (the prayer of St. John of Damascus is supposed to be read, pointing to the bed, when reading the prayer "May God rise again" they are overshadowed by the sign of the cross and the bed, and the four cardinal points). One of the consequences of this: we can more flexibly adapt the general rule to our own living conditions, to our inner state. So, for some people (or in some circumstances of life) it turns out to be more convenient to read the first part of the prayers for sleep in the coming evening, early enough - perhaps before the complete completion of all matters - and immediately before going to bed, already near your bed, read the remaining prayers. The joint reading of prayers for sleep to those who are to come - for example, in a family - can be completed with "It is worthy to eat ..." and a general blessing, and prayers, beginning with the prayer of St. John of Damascus, can be read to everyone ... at his bed.

This practice existed in Ancient Rus. Under Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, it was customary to add a few more prayers, literally going to sleep and to your bed (the composition of these prayers did not coincide with ours). / Supplement by Archpriest Sergiy Pravdolyubov.

Prayer of St. John of Damascus (read it, pointing to your bed)

Vladyka Chelovek, will it be possible for me to have this coffin's bed, or enlighten my cursed soul in the afternoon? Seven is the coffin, seven is death. I am afraid of Thy judgment, O Lord, and endless torment, but I do not cease doing evil; I always anger the Lord my God, and Thy Most Pure Mother, and all the heavenly Powers, and the holy Angel of my guardian. We, O Lord, as I am not worthy of Thy love for mankind, but I am worthy of all condemnation and torment. But, Lord, either I want, or I don’t want, save me. If save the righteous, nothing great; and if you have mercy purely, it is nothing wondrous: deserve the essence of your mercy. But amaze Thy mercy on me a sinner; about this, manifest Thy love for mankind, so that my malice cannot prevail over Thy ineffable goodness and mercy; and, as you like, arrange a thing about me.

Behold - that's it. Mi - to me. Wem ubo - so I know. Yako - here: what. If you save the righteous, because if You save the righteous. Nothing great - there is nothing great in it (great is great). And even if you have mercy on a pure one, it is nothing wondrous - and if you have mercy on a pure one, there is nothing surprising in this. Deserve the essence - because they are worthy. About this - here: in this, this. Unspoken - unspeakable.

Enlighten my eyes, Christ God, but not when I fall asleep into death, and not when my enemy says: strengthen yourself against him.

Wake up the protector of my soul, O God, as in the midst of many nets I walk; deliver me from them and save me, Blazhe, like a Man-lover.

The Most Glorious Mother of God, and the Most Holy Angel of the saints, let us ceaselessly sing with our hearts and lips, confessing this Mother of God, as if she truly gave birth to God for us, embodied, and praying incessantly for our souls.

Strengthened - I strengthened (past tense - aorist). It is, of course, about the invisible enemy - the devil.

Those who confess this Mother of God - by confessing (openly proclaiming) that She is the Mother of God.

Enlighten my eyes, Christ God, but not when I fall asleep into death, and not when my enemy says: strengthen yourself against him. These are the words from the psalm: Look, hear me, O Lord my God, enlighten my eyes, but not when I fall asleep into death, and not when my enemy says: strengthen yourself against him (Psalm 12: 4-5).

Mark yourself with the cross and speak prayer to the Honest Cross

May God be resurrected, and scattered around him, and let those who hate Him flee from His presence. Yako smoke disappears, yes disappear; as if wax melts from the face of fire, so let demons perish from the face of those who love God, and who are marked by the sign of the cross, and in the joy of those who say: Rejoice, Most Pure and Life-giving Cross of the Lord, drive away demons by the power of the prophesied Lord Jesus Christ on you, descended into hell, and the devil stepped down the strength, and who gave us to you His Honest Cross to drive out every adversary. O Most Honorable and Life-giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Lady the Virgin Mary, and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Wasted away - scattered. Enemies - enemies. Yako - how. From the person - in the meaning: before. Verbs - Speakers. Drive away - drive away. Propyatago - crucified. Honest - honorable, glorious. The adversary is the enemy.

May God be resurrected, and scattered away at Him ... The beginning of the prayer is taken from the psalm: May God rise, and scatter at Him, and let those who hate Him flee from the face of Him. Yako smoke disappears, yes disappear; as it conceals wax from the face of fire, so may sinners (sinners) perish from the presence of God (Ps. 67: 1-2). The same verses of the psalm are sung at the Easter service, interspersed with the Easter troparion. The words about the Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell, and the devil trampled the power, also remind us of the troparion (trampling death by death) and other hymns of Easter. The power of the Lord's Cross is inseparable from the Resurrection of Christ; the death and Resurrection of Christ make the Cross a "sign of victory", which is why this prayer, pronounced with faith and love to the Honorable Cross, is so strong to drive away the forces of evil from us.

Or a short prayer for the Cross

Protect me, Lord, by the power of the Honest and Life-giving Your Cross, and save me from all evil.

Prayer

Weaken, leave, forgive, God, our sins, voluntary and involuntary, even in word and in deed, even in knowledge and not in knowledge, even in days and nights, even in mind and in thought: forgive us all, as it is Good and Humanitarian.

Christians end each day with the obligatory evening prayer. Daily morning and evening prayer calls are called the prayer rule. It can be short, but sincere and no less powerful. A short evening prayer for the coming sleep is not in vain called a prayer rule. This rule helps to integrate daily work on your soul into your schedule. This work is carried out constantly, and not only when a person suddenly remembered the need for prayer.

Under what circumstances should you read the short evening rule?

Evening prayers cannot be postponed until the next day. In this case, there is a danger of destroying the spiritual mood by temptations, passions and laziness. Sometimes there are circumstances due to which a person cannot read a full prayer with awareness, passing every word through himself. In such cases, abbreviated evening prayers will help.

Brief evening prayers before bed will do:

  • those who, due to external circumstances, have neither the strength nor the time for full prayer, and those who understand that reading a prayer hastily and superficially does not make sense;
  • those who work on a rotational basis and who are on duty in the evening or at night;
  • for Christian beginners (an abbreviated version in Russian is allowed)
  • Orthodox parishioners, whose evening prayer is selected individually with their confessor and reflects the experiences that are happening in the heart of the believer.

How to read evening prayers?

Evening prayer can be tricky because of tiredness or inexperience. Either a short rule for evening prayers or postponing prayer will help here. It is possible not only to read the evening prayer before going to bed, but also before dinner. Knowing the main prayers helps not only to reduce the time for reading them, but also to feel the words of the prayer.

  • to retire, stand in front of the icon, if possible, light a candle or an icon lamp;
  • cleanse the soul of anger, irritation and resentment of the past day, tune in to a conversation with God;
  • overshadow yourself with the sign of the cross;
  • read one or more prayers.

The evening prayer ritual allows the Orthodox to reflect on their own deeds, feelings and thoughts of the passing day. They allow you to tune the soul on the true path, with repentance and humility to accept the events that have taken place and, through a heart open to God, to accept the actions of others with love.

Prayer 1, Saint Macarius the Great to God the Father

Eternal God and the King of all that has been created, who has vouchsafed me to live up to this hour, forgive me the sins that I have committed on this day in deed, word and thought; and cleanse, Lord, my humble soul from all fleshly and spiritual uncleanness. And grant me, Lord, to spend this night in peace, so that, rising from sleep, in all the days of my life I do what is pleasing to Thy holy name and overcome the enemies that attack me - fleshly and incorporeal. And deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts and vicious desires that defile me. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer 2, Saint Antiochus to our Lord Jesus Christ

Almighty, Word of the Father, Jesus Christ! Being perfect Himself, by Thy great mercy never leave me, Thy servant, but always abide in me. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not give me over to the action of the serpent and do not leave me to the will of Satan, for there is in me the seed of perdition. You, Lord God, whom everyone worships, Holy King, Jesus Christ, preserve me during my sleep with unfading Light, Your Holy Spirit, with which You have sanctified Your disciples. Grant, O Lord, to me, an unworthy servant of Thy, Thy salvation on my bed: enlighten my mind with the light of comprehension of Thy holy Gospel, my soul - with love for Thy Cross, my heart - with the purity of Thy word, my body - with Thy suffering, alien to passion, my thought Keep your humility. And lift me up in due time to glorify You. For you are glorified to the highest degree together with your Fatherless Father and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

3rd Prayer, Venerable Ephraim the Syrian to the Holy Spirit

Lord, Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of truth, have mercy and have mercy on me, Thy sinful servant, and let me go, unworthy, and forgive all the sins that I have sinned before You today as a person and, moreover, not as a person, but even worse livestock. Forgive my free sins and involuntary, led and unknown: made out of immaturity and evil skill, hot temper and carelessness. If I have sworn by Thy name, or blasphemed Him in my mind; or whom he reproached; or slandered someone in my anger, or grieved, or about what he was angry; or he lied, or slept prematurely, or the beggar came to me, and I rejected him; either he grieved my brother, or stirred up quarrels, or whom he condemned; either exalted, or puffed up, or was angry; or when he stood in prayer, his mind strove for cunning worldly thoughts, or had insidious thoughts; or overeat, or drank, or laughed madly; or thought evil; or, seeing the imaginary beauty, bowed down with his heart to that which is outside Thee; or said something obscene; or laughed at my brother's sin, while my sins are innumerable; either I didn’t care about prayer, or something else that I did evil that I didn’t remember: I did all this and even more than that. Have mercy on me, my Creator and Master, Thy careless and unworthy servant, and leave me, and forgive my sins, and forgive me, for You are Good and Human-loving. So that I can lie down in the world, fall asleep and calm down, prodigal, sinful and unhappy, and so that I bow down and glorify and glorify Your venerable name, with the Father, and His Only Begotten Son, now, and always, and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer 4

For Thou art the keeper of our souls and bodies, and we glorify Thee, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now, and always, and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer to the Honest Cross

When you go to bed, mark yourself with the cross and say a prayer to the Honest Cross:

May God rise, and may His enemies be scattered, and may all who hate Him flee from His face. As the smoke disappears, so let them disappear. As wax melts from fire, so let demons perish at the sight of those who love God, and those who overshadow themselves with the sign of the cross and say with joy: “Rejoice, revered and life-giving Cross of the Lord, driving out demons by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ crucified on you, who descended into hell and who destroyed the power of the devil and gave us you, His revered Cross, to drive away any enemy. " O venerable and life-giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Lady, the Virgin Mary, and with all the saints forever. Amen.

According to the Orthodox tradition, one should thank God for every day lived in the morning and evening, before going to bed. Prayers help you feel the love of the Lord and save you from nightmares and misfortune.

It is known that one should turn to God not only in moments of spiritual misfortune and grief, but also in free time. Morning prayers help you tune in for a happy and successful day. And the evening ones cry out to the Creator: through words we thank the Almighty for every day we have lived and save our souls from evil.

Orthodox prayers for the coming sleep

Most people have lost the habit of such a wonderful tradition of praying at night. In the hustle and bustle of days, we forget to express our love for God, but it is necessary to do this. Prayer helps not only to praise the Creator and ask for help: it has a beneficial effect on our mood, soul and sleep.

A person who performs such actions every day has greater happiness and luck in life than one who turns to the Almighty only with a request to resolve his problems. However, for prayer to work, it must be read correctly at home.

Turning to God greatly affects our life and consciousness. With the help of holy words, we can drive away trouble from ourselves, change the future and attract happiness. Not every person knows the Church Slavonic language, so difficulties may arise in reading powerful words. Especially for you, we have translated some prayers into Russian: they have not lost their power, but have become accessible and understandable.

Prayer to God before bed:

“Father of all living things, help me in this hour, forgive my sins, which I (name) have done through negligence today. If I offended a person with a swear word or an unacceptable act, I pray for forgiveness. Cleanse my soul from evil thoughts, and my flesh- from the desires of sinners. Deliver, God, from the vanity of the earth and reveal Your grace in a dream. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen"

Prayer to the Lord and Jesus Christ for the coming sleep:

“Our Father and Jesus Christ, grant me (name) your mercy, do not leave me on the path of life. I kneel down and pray for help in tomorrow, keep my sleep and sanctify my life. May your salvation and your love descend upon me on my bed.

Let go of my sins in a day and guide me along the path of repentance and light. Let all adversity pass as the day has passed. My God and your Son Jesus, I humbly believe in your power and power over evil. Save your servant (name). May your kingdom be eternal on earth. Amen".

Evening prayer to the Holy Spirit:

“Lord, the comforter of my soul. Show your mercy and save your servant (name) from misfortune. Through Your help, God, I want to cleanse my soul from the sins of the day. My thoughts and my words are involuntary, and therefore sinful. Save me from longing, sadness, despondency, grief and all evil intentions.

Replace my corrupted deeds with the mercy of God and allow me to repent of my deeds. Have mercy on me before going to bed and forgive my sins. Grant Your intercession before the power of evil. I glorify you forever and ever. Amen".

Prayer to the Guardian Angel at night:

“My guardian, my soul and body are under Your protection. Forgive me (name) if I have sinned and neglected Your trust. For my daily work, I ask forgiveness and pray for deliverance from sin. Not out of malice, but involuntarily, I anger the Lord God and you, my Protector. Show me your grace and mercy. For the glory of our Lord. Amen".

In order for God and his saints to hear your prayers, you should say them with pure thoughts and love in your heart. You can choose one prayer, memorize it and read it every day before going to bed, because it is not a matter of quantity, but of your righteousness. With the help of prayers, you can fulfill your desires, the most important thing is to know the sacred text and have faith in God.
