Wicker fence with your own hands. Wicker fence made of branches. Wicker fence: manufacturing instructions

A wicker fence is a stylish fence made of branches or rods intertwined with each other, which is selected for fencing a personal plot or one of its components. It has a decent appearance, looks great against the background of the usual rural landscape, but at the same time it is more of a landscape design than a reliable home protection.

Wattle has long been considered a symbol of comfort and measured rural life. The technology of weaving such a fence has been preserved since ancient times. To perform this design, you can use all kinds of improvised materials, but the most popular are the branches of different trees.

Peculiarities

Wicker type fences differ from each other in different parameters: in height, in the difference in weaving methods and in external design.

Wicker fences in height are of 3 types:

  • High (from 2 meters and above) can become quite high-quality protection. Such a fence will look decent if the pillars in it are made of stone, and a wicker product is placed between these pillars.
  • low products. Their height will not exceed 0.5-0.7 m. They are more suitable for decorating flower beds, they are used as elements of a stylish landscape design.
  • Wicker fences a meter high are used to separate the recreation area from the rest of the suburban area.

According to the methods of weaving, the fences are divided into:

  • Horizontal- the most common type, the easiest to perform. These wattle fences will serve you much more than their vertical counterparts.
  • vertical making fences with your own hands in weaving is very problematic if you have no experience, but those who know how to do it masterfully create amazing masterpieces, decorating a new fence with intricate patterns.

Wicker fences can also differ in how they are created and used:

  • A wicker fence with a height of less than 0.7 m is already installed on a prepared base, most often a metal base is used to increase the service life of the product.
  • Flat wattle is best installed in sections, the length of only one such section can be up to 2 meters. This weaving method is the easiest to repair than all the others, and if necessary, one of the parts can be completely replaced without difficulty.
  • Decorative fences installed in the form of a circle are most often used to decorate flower beds and flower beds.
  • A wicker-type fence is, first of all, pillars that are dug into the ground, branches or twigs of a vine are woven around them. To increase the durability of the product or create unusual and interesting patterns, special durable poles are installed between the racks.

A fence of this type will fully satisfy the owners with all aesthetic aspects. It will give any site a special rural charm. In terms of strength, such a braided line will by itself give way to a stone fence, but it will decorate your site.

For the weaving procedure itself, you will need long and thin rods that will create the plane of the hedge, and slightly thicker stakes - the rods will hold on to them. You can choose a vine of any plants that meet certain requirements. Willow twigs and bamboo often grow a "living" fence. In addition to twigs, you can pick up other materials - boards, pickets (thin and flexible).

Pros and cons

The wicker fence has the following main advantages:

  • Interesting view. Weaving helps turn the fence into a real decoration for the entire site. High or low products with different types of plexus become a stylish addition to the design of any personal plot.
  • A wicker fence is completely safe, since no life-threatening substances are used in its creation.
  • Low price. If you make a fence on your own from a tree from your site, then you can spend nothing at all. But if you buy already made fences, their cost will fluctuate depending on the amount of material, the height of the structure itself and the type of weaving chosen.
  • Ease of installation. You can decorate the yard with wattle without specialists.

However, this product also has a number of disadvantages:

  • Short service life, as such a product is afraid of gusts of wind and any precipitation.
  • If you want to put a wattle fence on the site, then it is worth remembering that it will only perform a design function and will not save you from unexpected visitors.
  • Complicated repairs. When at least one of the elements breaks in such a fence, then you will have to redo the entire fence or an entire section.

Before choosing a wicker fence, remember all its positive and negative qualities, specify the duration of its service and all the features of repair work, installation time and the environmental side.

Types of weaving

Before you start weaving from rods or branches, you need to choose the method by which you will create a new fence. Most commonly used options:

  • Vertical type will require the presence of strong horizontal sticks between the supports. They will be fixed in increments of 20-30 cm. The rods are woven between them, starting from the bottom and to the top. The length of the branches in this case should be 15-20 cm less than the height of the fence itself. Vertical weaving is often done from boards - then a beautiful wooden fence is obtained. You just need to take the boards, use them to perform vertical weaving, and use the support to align the ends. The support is usually installed at the top of the fence. To give a beautiful effect, the same support is made at the bottom of the fence.

  • horizontal weaving everyone calls it classic. The rods are intertwined with the "8th" or the sign of "infinity". That is, each new blank is a natural continuation of the one ahead. The length of the blanks in this case will be at least 2 m. The supports are installed in increments of 25-30 cm so that the branches are easy to bend. If you have a lot of small rods, gather them all together in bundles and weave them all at once. One of the varieties of such weaving is the oblique method, which is done diagonally, which looks very beautiful.

A horizontal wattle fence can also be built using shields. First, the shields themselves are made, the required number of supports is made in each of them, and the blanks themselves are neatly woven between them. Shields with each other are fixed with nails, self-tapping screws.

The shield braid is also constructed from boards, only the spans between the supports will be larger.

Manufacturing materials

Wicker fences can be built from those materials that have a special flexibility. The most unreliable of them are cattail, reeds. They are unlikely to last more than 4 years, as they dry out, and after that the fences from them quickly lose their appearance and collapse. More often, vine and willow are used to obtain wattle, and today this kind of fence made of small boards is especially in demand, as they look stylish and are very durable. Companies that produce wicker products offer universal PVC fences, and although this is not a natural material, it is very durable and will last for many years.

Willow

The branches of this tree are strong and flexible, so baskets and fences are often woven from them. Before you start weaving, the rods should be steamed well so that they are even more bendable.

You can make fences from willow twigs by any method. The vertical version looks best with them. First, support structures are placed horizontally, then willow branches are woven vertically, burying their ends in the ground. A little later, willow twigs will be accepted, turn green and create the effect of a natural design of the fence.

In order for the willow braid to last for a long time, the tree must be treated with a special compound, and where the fence is installed, dig a trench for drainage and pour sand instead of soil.

Vine

A vine is a very bending and rather long branches of trees and various shrubs that are chosen for building a fence and even building houses from them. Wattle wattle is aesthetic, natural and beautiful.

In order for the fence to come out strong and last longer, the following requirements must be met:

  • To facilitate the work with the rods and give them flexibility, they are soaked in hot water or left in a well-heated bath for a couple of hours. After that, you should immediately start weaving, because after the material dries, it will lose its flexibility, but it will perfectly hold any shape.
  • For a low decorative fence, you need to pick up branches no more than 2 cm thick, for tall wooden wicker fences - from 2 to 3 cm.
  • First, you should carefully remove the entire bark from the vine, apply a disinfectant, potassium permanganate, stain and varnish.

The vine is chosen to decorate decorative fences that will complement the design of a personal plot, divide it into different zones or decorate courtyard flower beds.

Boards

A wicker board fence will carry both a decorative and protective load due to its reliability and ability to protect against uninvited guests on the site.

Unedged boards, planed boards and poles (they can be made of metal, wood or concrete) are selected for production. The fence will stand with the help of the tension of the "woven" boards, but nails can be used for additional fastening.

A small hole at the bottom, under the finished product, is often laid with ordinary bricks or stones of different sizes.

Wicker elements made of wood in a brick fence are very popular. If you want to weave a fence from boards yourself, then be sure to look for an assistant, since it is very difficult to build this building alone.

A popular type of such a fence is the Austrian braid. For its construction, pine is chosen - an inexpensive material that has a long service life. Such a structure must be coated with an antifungal substance.

Fence supports are made of wooden beams or metal profiled pipes. They are fixed at an equal distance, for style they can be painted in any color or decorated with boards.

PVC

Most often, a wicker fence is associated with ordinary people with natural materials, but today it is also produced from PVC, which has a number of positive features:

  • Long service life. This is the main difference between PVC and other materials. For all the time of operation, the fence will not lose its stylish look.
  • Mobility. Anyone can make and install a plastic wattle fence. The design is lightweight and easy to transport.
  • Ease of use. PVC fences will not fade in the sun, will not be afraid of heat, cold and high humidity. In order for the fence to maintain a decent appearance for a long time, it is necessary to cover it with a special composition from time to time. Metal components are constantly treated with a special tool.
  • Rich model selection. Fences can be selected in all sorts of colors, which will perfectly complement the design of your personal plot. It is also important to initially choose the right PVC fence parameters.
  • Acceptable price. Due to the ease of production, PVC fences have an acceptable and affordable price.

What to choose?

You have a great opportunity to first choose what material to make your new wicker fence from. In addition to those already mentioned, you can opt for hazel - this is a type of twig that is collected only in early spring, before the first buds appear on the branches, it is then that young shoots have special flexibility. Hazel in terms of service life is not inferior to willows.

Also, you should pay attention to artificial rattan, which has many advantages: it looks natural, according to external characteristics it will not yield to natural samples, and thanks to it, natural resources are preserved. Rattan will not respond to climate change and therefore can stand for decades without requiring repair costs. Natural rattan quickly grows into the ground, which artificial does not. Synthetic rattan costs much less than natural rattan.

Alpine vine is quite popular today for its neat appearance, so you can always pair it with other weaves to make your fence even more exclusive.

By the way, all kinds of weaving can be used not only for fences, but also in flower beds. A flower bed with a wicker base in the form of a fence will not require extra costs and will look great both in the country house and in the garden of a house in the city.

decoration

Wicker fences can be very successfully decorated with a number of secondary elements to make the decor of the site unique.

Chess is when the vine is taken in a bundle and woven horizontally. The result is an original product.

Diagonal checkerboard - for this kind of weaving, horizontal poles are attached to the supports. Branches a little more than 5 cm thick in increments of up to 15 cm are fixed to the topmost pole with one nail. The rods unfold along the diagonal of the fence and are fixed at the bottom of the horizontals. Between them, directing to the opposite diagonal, other branches are woven.

A wicker fence is a very simple design. That is why it received its popularity, prevalence and mass use in ancient times. Now it is a way to decorate a garden in an original and cheap way.

You can make a wicker fence with your own hands, you won’t need a lot of labor and material, and the result will be an excellent design of the site.

Necessary materials

In order to make a fence, you need stakes driven into the ground at the same distance and rods for weaving. Almost any branches or even boards can act as the latter, but the best are: willow, birch and alder vines.

Thick branches, wooden posts or pegs can be used as supports, however, such a fence will not last long, aggressive environment and adverse conditions will quickly destroy the tree in the ground.

Therefore, when planning the installation of such a structure, it is better to use metal stakes. You can make them from old pipes, metal rods and other suitable material.

To achieve the most natural effect, it is better to paint the metal in shades close to the color of the wooden rods used. The top of the pipe should be covered with a plug.

If you still decide to use wood as stakes, you must pre-treat it with special septic tanks and create a sand cushion around the part immersed in the ground in order to prevent rapid decay.

The diameter of the supports should be at least 6-8 cm, and the rods - 1-3 cm, but the higher and longer the fence, the larger the diameter of the wooden weaving is needed.

Start of installation work

The first step will be to mark the area allocated for the future building and distribute the installation sites for the posts. The distance between them depends on the length of the weaving material, the height of the fence and is individual for each case, but usually about half a meter.

After digging a trench, you need to insert stakes into it, fill it with sand if necessary, and for an even more durable and stable structure, you can fill the space around the pillars with cement.

The depth of the trench also depends on the height of the fence: up to 1.5 meters it is necessary to deepen 50 cm, up to 1 meter - 30 cm is enough, for a low fence that performs only a decorative function - 15 cm.

The rods must be soaked in water before use, to give them greater flexibility and the ability to fasten them together tightly and without obvious gaps. The rods are fixed at the beginning and end with wire. Their length should be more than the span between the columns by 10 cm.

If you pay attention to various photographs of a wicker fence, you will see that in addition to various materials for weaving, there are also various schemes and technologies for designing such a fence.

Types of laying rods

If you lay horizontal bars in a group, and not one at a time, a “chess” pattern is formed;

To make “vertical weaving”, horizontal boards or planks are attached to the support posts at a certain distance, and the rods are placed between these planks;

The most difficult option is “diagonal chess”. You can't do without a screwdriver and self-tapping screws. On the upper bar, fixed horizontally on the columns, rods are fastened with self-tapping screws and turned out diagonally, and between them, on the opposite side, perform similar actions;

To make weaving from veneer, it is enough to build a structure of 4 supports, and between them horizontally go around the veneer trimmings. The veneer must be secured with nails.

It is possible to construct a wattle fence from reeds. To do this, it must first be collected in bundles, and then tightly fixed with wire between the wooden horizontal bars of the future fence;

A wicker fence made of boards is one of the most difficult designs to implement.

Wattle from boards

This is the most luxurious, most presentable and reliable wicker fence. To implement such a structure, you need to stock up:

  • Support bars. The fence will be massive and heavy, so it is advisable to use a tree with a diameter of at least 100 mm;
  • Thin boards to create weaving. The optimal size is 150x20x2100 cm;
  • Saw, self-tapping screws, screwdriver;
  • Antiseptic, paint and bitumen to process wood.

The distance between the bars should be about 2 m. In order for the fence to last longer, it is necessary to concrete the supports, carefully observing the vertical, even position. The ends of the bars buried in the ground must be treated with bitumen.

The boards must be cut to the same size and begin to fasten from the bottom. The ends should overlap on the supports. When arranging the boards, it is important to use the level. The boards are fastened with self-tapping screws. The next board is superimposed on top, but bends in the other direction - this is how the entire canvas is constructed.

After finishing work, it is imperative to cover the surface with varnish or paint in order to increase the service life of the material.

Decoration

Wicker fences made of branches and vines can be decorated with thematic decor: clay pots, dried peppers, sunflowers, pumpkins, wreaths.

Pots or baskets with flowering bushes or stones laid out along will also help to create the right atmosphere. These accessories will complement the fence and make it even more original.

conclusions

Wicker fences for summer cottages are one of the easiest and most budgetary ways to decorate a backyard area and create zoning of the territory. Solid and tall, it will also become a reliable defense.

Properly selected and well-crafted materials, carefully thought out and executed design, will make it a durable and strong hallmark of the entire site.

Photo of wicker fences with your own hands

A wicker fence is not so much a means of protection as a component of landscape design. It symbolizes the comfort and charm of village life and is one of the most ancient inventions. So, today we will find out how to make a wicker fence with our own hands, and also consider the advantages of this element, its role in.

Strengths and weaknesses of wicker fences

The main advantages of this design include the following.

  1. Excellent appearance. Thanks to weaving technology, an ordinary fence turns into a true work of art! Regardless of whether the fence is low or high, it will complement the design of your site in any case.
  2. Ease of creation. It is quite possible to make such a fence with your own hands, without resorting to the services of professionals.
  3. Cheapness. If you make a structure from wood from your yard, then the costs will generally be zero. Of course, if you purchase a ready-made design, then its cost will directly depend both on the material used in the manufacture, and on the dimensions of the product and the type of weaving (we will talk about this a little later).
  4. Environmental friendliness. Products of this type are absolutely safe in environmental terms. The fact is that in their manufacture no materials that can be hazardous to health are used.

Despite all the advantages described above, such fences also have disadvantages that you should also be aware of.

  1. Difficulty in carrying out repairs. If even one element breaks, you will need to disassemble the entire structure or, alternatively, one of the sections. By the way, without exception, wicker structures are extremely difficult to repair.
  2. Such buildings are not capital. And if you intend to decorate your own area with a wicker fence, you must understand that it (the fence) will perform an exclusively decorative function. Simply put, it will not protect against thieves.
  3. Operational period. The fence will not last long, as the wind and precipitation affect it not in the best way.

Note! Before you start creating a wicker fence, understand its strengths and weaknesses, do not forget about the service life and repair work.

Classification of wicker fences

There are a number of parameters by which the constructions described in the article are classified. So, according to their height, fences can be:

  • low - 0.60.7 meters high, with which they decorate flower beds and plots in general;
  • structures with a height of about 1 meter - are used for the purpose of zoning the yard (for example, to separate the play area or recreation area from the rest of the territory);
  • high - at least 2 meters; this is already a reliable protection of your site, which is a capital structure (provided that the pillars are stone, and the wicker fence itself is located between them).

We will talk about how to make a wicker fence with our own hands a little later, but now the classification of fences according to the weaving method. So, in this case, they can be:

  • vertical - without experience it is quite difficult to make such ones, but with the appropriate skills it is quite possible to create a true work of art;
  • horizontal - these are the most popular, as the simplest fences to make, which, by the way, last much longer than the previous ones.

Finally, according to the features of creating and using hedges, they can be as follows:

  • decorative rounded designs - used for decoration and flower beds;
  • simple weaving - they are placed in sections 2 meters long each; this option is much easier to repair than others, since, if necessary, one of the sections can always be replaced with a new one;
  • wicker fences below 70 centimeters in height are installed on a ready-made base (specialists prefer metal in order to increase the operational life).

What material to use to make a wicker fence? We will talk about this in the next paragraph of the article.

Materials that are suitable for a wicker fence

There are several options, let's briefly review each of them.

Option number 1. Willow

If this material is prepared correctly, then it will turn out not only flexible, but also strong enough. The variety of this culture is quite wide, but almost every species can be used to create a wicker fence. By the way, a construction made of willow can be of two types:

  • inanimate;
  • alive.

The creation of a living fence means planting young shoots in the ground, which, growing up, will form the very wattle fence. As for the fencing of the inanimate, already cut shoots of culture are used here.

Option number 2. Hazel

In this case, the hedge is formed by young shoots, which differ primarily in flexibility. Raw materials should be harvested in early spring - even before the buds appear on the hazel.

Option number 3. cattail, reed

Immediately make a reservation that the distinctive features of these natural materials are fragility and fragility. For this reason, their use for the purpose of a full-fledged fence is at least impractical, because after a couple of years the fence will be unusable and will have to be changed. Moreover, with the help of reeds, only low structures can be created to divide the site into zones or to fence flower beds.

Option number 4. grape vine

Grape rods are easy enough to bend because they are flexible and long. Also, the vine is resistant to high humidity and temperature extremes.

As you can see, there are enough materials, but not every one of them suits us. By the way, looking ahead, we will inform you that there are other, no less effective materials. Now we proceed directly to the description of the technology, how to make a wicker fence with your own hands.

We will start with willow, because it is the most popular.

Making a wicker fence from willow

Willow branches are not only pliable and flexible, but also strong enough, so they are used for weaving not only fences, but also baskets. The weaving itself in this case can be both horizontal and vertical. The first option is more interesting: first, horizontal supports are created here, after which the branches are installed horizontally, with one end of each dug into the ground. Very soon the willow will turn green and it will seem that the fence was created by Mother Nature herself.

Stage one. Preparatory activities

So that the result of the work does not upset you and is really of high quality, you must not only acquire consumables, but also do it at a strictly defined time. Willow shoots should ideally be cut between September and March. Not vice versa.

But sometimes even rods that were cut "on time" have insufficient flexibility for weaving. Here fragility can be eliminated with hot water. For this purpose, the rods are placed in heated and clean water for about two to three hours. As a result, the shoots will be saturated with moisture and gain the desired flexibility.

Stage two. Consumables, equipment

When creating a willow fence, we need:

  • vine, the diameter of which is approximately 20-30 millimeters;
  • support poles - logs or metal pipes;
  • hammer;
  • wire, preferably thin;
  • knife;
  • screwdriver;
  • secateurs;
  • self-tapping screws.

Stage three. Manufacturing instructions

Consider step by step the process of making a fence.

Step one. First, install the support poles. We apply markings and drill holes for supports; the optimal installation step of the pillars is 1 meter. Having finished with this, we put the supports themselves. They should enter the ground by about 35-40 centimeters - so the design will turn out to be extremely durable and strong.

step two. We stick thicker rods into the ground only 15 centimeters. In the future, weaving will be achieved thanks to these dug-in rods.

Step Three. Next, about 10 centimeters from the surface, we install the lower rods. This is necessary in order to prevent the process of decay. In parallel with the vine from the bottom of the fence, we skip the pre-prepared wire, which will give the whole structure more rigidity.

Step Four. Now we begin the actual weaving procedure. Using a checkerboard arrangement of rods, we pass the vine through those that are dug in horizontally, and at the same time we pull the tips inward. Having made three rows, we tap on top with a hammer in order to tamp. We braid the metal wire into the structure every seven rows.

Step five. We cut off the protruding ends of the rods with a secateurs. Of course, the bars that protrude beyond the supporting pillars will not look beautiful.

Step Six. We also trim the posts from above, so that it is more aesthetically pleasing. If the pruner does not cope with this, we use a hacksaw.

step seven. Actually, the fence is already ready. After a few years, we treat it with a special impregnation so that it does not lose its original appearance.

Making a wicker birch fence

Wicker fences made of birch branches deserve our attention, if only because they look really amazing! And if you add vertical weaving to this, you can get additional protection for the site. The manufacturing process itself is simple, but you still have to try. We start traditionally with the preparation of everything you need.

Stage one. Consumables and equipment

In our work we will use:

  • hammer;
  • planks, preferably wider - so not so much will be required to fence them;
  • screwdriver;
  • wooden posts 10 centimeters thick;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • rope for marking.

When everything you need is ready, let's get to work.

Stage two. Manufacturing technology

Step one. We carry out preliminary preparation of branches, we select only the freshest of them - they are quite flexible. We clean them from small twigs and knots, adjust them so that they have the same size.

Step Three. After installing the pillars, we begin to mount the transverse strips. The length of each bar must exceed 3 meters (this figure depends on the step between the supports). We use self-tapping screws to fix the planks.

Step Four. Now we fix the branches themselves. We put the first one between the transverse slats from above, the second - in a similar way, but already, as it were, in a mirror image. Then we repeat everything: we push one branch in the usual way, the other - in a mirror way, etc.

Note! In order to minimize the gap between the branches, we use a regular hammer.

After some time, when the fence is already dry enough under the sun's rays, the process of its deformation will stop. This design will serve you for many years.

We make a wicker fence from boards

First, we note that such a fence looks more attractive than a traditional picket fence, which is why many owners of summer cottages prefer it. For manufacturing, you can use not only wood, but also veneer, plastic or even MDF. But the cheapest option is wood, so consider it.

Note! Fencing from boards will not only decorate the site, but also protect it. It is durable, reliable and durable, so it will effectively protect the yard from unauthorized entry.

Wicker fences on brick fences are especially popular - this is how they look most attractive. And if you decide to create such a structure on the site, then immediately get ready for difficulties and get at least one assistant, since it will be quite difficult for one to cope.

Stage one. Preparing everything you need

For the construction of wooden wicker fences we need:

  • processed boards measuring 15x221 centimeters;
  • wood paint;
  • support bars with a diameter of 10 centimeters;
  • screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • file.

It is important that the thickness of the bars is at least 10 centimeters, since the weight of the future structure will be significant.

Stage two. Manufacturing procedure

Step one. First, we make a markup for the installation of support pillars. We pre-treat the pillars with an antiseptic, install them in increments of 2 meters.

step two. We cut the boards so that they all have the same size.

Step Three. We install vertical supports for weaving - they will serve as the basis for the future design.

Step Four. We start weaving itself in the same way as in the options described above, that is, from below. We take the first board, bend it and pass it through the supports, after which we fix it with self-tapping screws.

Step five. We install the next board in the same way as the previous one, but already mirrored (that is, it is necessary to bend in the opposite direction).

Step Six. When assembling the second canvas, we exercise extreme caution. The boards of both canvases must match, and this is one of the main rules on how to make a wicker fence with your own hands.

Step Six. Upon completion of installation, we process all structural elements with a special protective paint.

How to care for wicker fencing?

There is nothing difficult to take care of. Immediately after installation, we finish the wooden boards in order to improve their aesthetic qualities. After processing the surfaces, we cover them with varnish. Choose a varnish of such a color that it fits the overall design of your own site.

Renew the paint every two years to bring it back to its original look. At the same time, it is quite possible to experiment with colors - for example, create a kind of chessboard, alternately painting the boards with black and white paint. What you get will definitely make you happy!

Production of a wicker PVC fence

In most cases, the concept of "wicker fence" is associated with wood or vines, but PVC, which has become increasingly popular in recent years, has significant advantages. Let's consider them.

  1. Affordable cost. The manufacturing technology of the material itself is extremely simple, and therefore it is inexpensive.
  2. Durability, which is the main difference between PVC and vines or wood. The material has a special protective coating, it is primed and painted with modern materials, due to which the service life reaches several decades. And, which is typical, during this period the appearance of the fence practically does not change.
  3. Wide range of. If desired, you can make a fence of any desired color, thereby ennobling your site. Also, the material has a cellular structure, which will make the design of the yard truly unusual.
  4. Quick installation. Anyone can handle this, besides the weight of the material is quite low.
  5. Ease of use. PVC fences, unlike the options described above, are immune to high humidity or temperature extremes, and they do not fade in the sun. And the maintenance of the material consists only in periodic wiping with a special solution. Elements made of metal should be coated with anticorrosive.

How much would such a fence cost?

Specific figures in this case depend on several factors, including:

  • construction height;
  • weaving method;
  • material used in the work.

For example, a willow fence with a height of about 1 meter will cost at least 500-600 rubles per linear meter. Although, if desired, we can build a willow vine fence on the site absolutely free of charge, for which you just need to prepare branches and supports. But a fence made of PVC or wooden boards will cost from 750 rubles per linear meter.

As a conclusion

Wicker fences are true works of art. There are a lot of weaving technologies, design options and possible materials, so everyone can choose for themselves what is ideal for the landscape design of the site. With sufficient strength, the fence can not only decorate, but also protect the estate from uninvited guests.

But it is worth noting that wicker structures are rarely used for protective purposes, although in the landscape it is an indispensable attribute! If you wish, you can make it on your own according to the instructions given in this article, or you can order it from experienced professionals.

Unthinkable without wooden fences, the most colorful of which is wicker fence made of branches. Like any other, a decorative wicker fence consists of the main elements:

Independently and without extra costs, you can build do-it-yourself wicker fence for every taste, guided by detailed instructions.

Vine Harvesting

For the manufacture of real rustic wattle, young shoots of any trees and non-thorny shrubs are used. Best suited for these purposes:

A low-cost method of harvesting vines is a trip to the nearest planting or to the bank of a river.

Weaving vine can be harvested at any time of the year, but it is better to do it in winter or early spring before the start of sap flow.

The most popular and affordable material is willow. Since many species grow in the middle lane, it is better to choose rods of a juicy green, yellow or reddish hue for weaving. For the manufacture of a wicker fence from branches, annual shoots with a diameter of 1.5-5 cm and a length of 2-3 meters are suitable. The thickness depends on the designer's intent - low fences can also be made from thin branches. With a sharp knife, the branches are cut at an angle and tied into tight bundles.

If harvesting is carried out in winter, the vine must thaw for several hours at room temperature before processing.

Then the bark is removed. This is done in order to extend the life of the structure. If desired, the fence, woven from barked vines, can later be painted or varnished.

There are several methods for removing the bark:

If the vine is harvested at the beginning of sap flow, the bark is removed well and without additional effort.

The prepared vine is stored in bundles on special supports or suspended.

Foundation construction

Depending on the height of the fence, metal rods, wooden stakes or posts are used for supports. Metal pipes are used for high fences, and wooden pegs will look more natural in small decorative fences.

The disadvantage of using wood is its susceptibility to decay, therefore, before starting work, the lower part is treated with any antiseptic. You can use bitumen, resin or firing over a flame.

Then the marking of the future fence is done - pegs are driven in at the control points and the twine is pulled. The marking follows the contours of the fence.

The pegs are cut to the height of the desired fence with a margin of 10-15 cm at the top and at least 40-50 cm at the bottom (the part that will be in the ground is treated with anti-rotting drugs). It is convenient to make holes for stakes with a crowbar, driving it into the ground:

The distance between the pegs depends on the thickness of the vine and the height of the fence, and on average ranges from 30 cm to 1.2 m.

With a vine thickness of 2.5-3 cm, the distance between the supports of 50 cm will be optimal. The extreme pegs are installed 2-3 times closer to each other - to create a castle. In our case, this distance will be 20 cm.

It makes sense to divide the prepared rods by thickness - it is advisable to use thicker branches in the lower part of the fence.

fence weaving

You should start braiding, starting from the thick end of the branch. The first rod is superimposed on the front side of the first peg and wound on the wrong side of the second. When the vine ends, the next branch begins to lead into the previous peg. The second row is woven from the opposite end of the structure. Weaving the second row will be a mirror image of the first:

If the branches are too thin, weaving in bunches looks spectacular. You can use a vine of different lengths so that the thin and thick ends are evenly distributed along the entire weave:

Over time, the vine shrinks and uneven gaps may appear between the rods, so each subsequent row is laid close to the previous one (you can compact the rows with a hammer). Every 4-5 rows, the last rod is screwed to the posts from the front and back sides - this will prevent the entire weaving from falling in the future. Extra, strongly protruding parts of the rods are cut off in the course of weaving. The upper rod is also fixed on pegs with screws or self-tapping screws - when the branches are deformed, the fixed ends will not rise.

If wicker fence made of branches high, at a distance of 20-25 cm from the top, the three extreme columns are tied with wire. Then, with the help of a short piece of reinforcement, the wire is interlaced. Such a technique will protect the structure from “squeezing” the extreme support.

Unusual wicker fence made of branches

A type of wicker fence is a fence made of snags. Although the weaving technique is not used here, the bizarre shape of the material creates the illusion of openwork lace:

When making a fabulous fence, it is important to observe the following rules:

The final touch in the arrangement of a wicker fence made of branches will be its decoration. It is advisable to open the structure with an antiseptic composition. Some substances change the color of wood:

The protruding parts of a wicker fence made of branches can be cut flush with the main plane, or they can be decorated with clay pots.

There are many types of fences from a wide variety of materials. But recently, more and more often you can see a beautiful, eye-catching fence made of intertwined vines - Ukrainian tyn. Such a fence decorates areas near cafes and restaurants, separates zones on a garden plot, or simply encloses flower beds. Tyn can be made with your own hands from a variety of materials.

Colorful and fashionable wicker fence

Vine is called elastic, long rods from any plant material. It is harvested in early spring before the juice begins to move in the stems or in autumn, from early September until frost.

Properly prepared material is the key to a beautiful and high-quality fence

Most often, long annual branches of willow, hazel or willow shrubs are used. The best time to go to harvest material is an early sunny morning. Cut the vine with a sharp knife obliquely, trying to make the cuts smooth and even. When cutting off the branches of a shrub, they tend to leave 3-4 leaves from the ground. So, the bush will recover faster.

After clearing the branches of leaves, it is desirable to give them a neater appearance by removing the bark. This is done with a simple tool in the form of a split cone, which is better known as a pinch.

It can be made by hand by splitting a hardwood stake from one end. The unsplit end is strengthened by tying it with a strong rope or wire. The rod is inserted between two chips and stretched from edge to edge. The bark from a fresh vine is easily removed, but if it has lain down a little, then it is better to put it in water for a while.

Wicker fence tyn using logs for poles

If the branches were stored for a long time and had time to dry out, it is best to steam them or soak them for a week in a large container of water. It is very important that the material is completely covered.

When the vine is ready for weaving, it is sorted by stem thickness.

Thicker rods are used at the base of the fence and at the very top. The thinner rods are woven closer to the middle. This trick allows you to build a stronger and more durable wicker fence.

Do I need a foundation for a wicker fence

The place where it is planned to put a tyn in the future must be prepared in advance.

Typically, such a fence does not need, but more expensive options do not exclude stone or brick bases. Such fences are often installed in public places, for example, in open areas of restaurants or cafes, enclosing their territory and creating a unique comfort. They look quite respectable, but they are much more expensive.

It is best to make a pillow of sand and gravel throughout the entire length for better drainage. This, of course, significantly slows down the construction process and increases the cost, but the wattle fence will not get wet in the water during rains. Hence, it will last longer.

The technology of such construction is very simple:

If you simplify the task of erecting a wicker fence with your own hands, you can simply level the site (in order to avoid stagnation of rain or melt water) and drive the bases into the ground to a depth of 30 cm. You must treat with drying oil, resin or any other means that protects them from decay .

Weaving a fence from a vine

Probably, everyone has seen a finished wicker fence at least once in their life, so they have an idea of its essence.

An example of a wicker fence made of vines

Weaving begins from below, using thicker rods for this. The first rod is firmly fixed in front of the initial base with a hand from the butt side and carefully wound behind the second, and so on, in strict observance of the order.
The rod must end on the back side of the next stake. With the next rod, on the contrary, weaving behind the stake begins and the next stake is wrapped around from the front side. And in the same way - to the end of the fence.
It is not difficult to make such a decorative fence, the main thing is to have patience and know some tricks:

  • Each rod must begin to be twisted from the butt, thicker side;
  • You can not leave the end of the vine in the middle between the stakes, this will make the fence look untidy;
  • It is necessary to regularly compact each row of weaving with a wooden mallet for greater strength and a beautiful look.

When the weave reaches the top edge, the top of the protruding stakes can be cut off or, if desired, left as is. Then you can place various decorations on them in the form of clay pots or a hanging flower pot with a climbing plant.

Interesting options for wicker fences

In order to, you can use other, alternative, material options. Some of them can stand for only a few years, while others are very durable.

Reed weaving

For such a tyne, long bundles of reeds up to five centimeters thick are used. You can make this decorative fence with your own hands using the same technique as. If the reed was dried under the influence of sunlight, the tyn will turn golden in color. Light green reeds can be obtained by drying them in the shade of a canopy.

PVC weaving

Now you can. Such fences are sold in a ready-made set, their price is quite high, but they will stand for a very long time. PVC material is not afraid of sudden changes in temperature, does not fade in the bright summer sun, and it is easy to install it yourself.

If the tyn is made not so much for a decorative purpose as for performing protective functions, you can build it from veneer or thin boards. Such a fence belongs to opaque types.

In addition to decorative functions, it will also reliably protect the site from the prying eyes of strangers.

The bases for this type of fencing should be stronger, and it is installed at a distance of 1.5 meters or more, but not more than two meters.
