Confession is a real mental test. Initially, it provokes the desire to repent, to confess verbally in their bad deeds.

After all, when people cease to adhere to the commandments of God, the inevitable destruction of their spiritual and physical bodies occurs. And through repentance, they gain the ability to cleanse themselves.

Confession contributes to the reconciliation of personality and God. Healing of the soul is observed and a person receives an additional portion of strength to overcome his sins. In the process of this sacrament, a person frankly talks about his bad deeds and seeks forgiveness.

However, if a parishioner is very worried the day before, he may forget about what he wants to repent of. And here the list of sins for confession in Orthodoxy comes to the rescue. It is compiled in advance and is a kind of hint, reminder. The list of sins in confession can be read in full or used as a plan.

In this case, the most important condition will be the maximum sincerity and truthfulness of the individual.

But for the sacrament of confession to be effective, it is important to have full contact of feelings with words, because just a mechanical reading of your sins does not mean real healing from them. Feelings without words are just as ineffective as words without feelings.

What is the list of sins for confession? This is an extensive list that includes all obscene words or deeds. It is based on the seven deadly sins and the ten commandments.

There is too much variety in human life now, so it is rarely righteous. This means that confession is an opportunity to sincerely repent of your sins and strive to prevent them in the future.

The correct process of preparing for confession

Prepare for the ritual in advance. You can write down a list of your bad deeds on a piece of paper and take it with you. Also, it will not be superfluous to engage in reading special literature concerning the sacrament of confession and communion. In doing so, do not try to excuse your sins, just realize that they are wicked.

The ideal option is to analyze each of your days, establishing what bad and what good actions you have done. This healthy habit will help you become more attentive to your thoughts, words, and actions.

Even before you go to confession, make peace with all the people offended by you, and also sincerely forgive all your offenders.

There is a difference between personal repentance (when an individual mentally repents of committed deeds) and the sacrament of confession (when a person talks about his unseemly transgressions and seeks to cleanse himself of them). Telling a stranger about your unseemly actions means making moral efforts in order, firstly, to realize the depth of your wrongdoing, and secondly, to cope with inner shame.

If you are faced with some difficulties, compiling a list of the falls, then the publication "Complete Confession" can help you. It is now offered by every church shop, in it all types of sins for confession and features of the ritual are revealed in detail. Also, the book is supplemented with examples and materials to help prepare yourself for the ceremony.

What are the rules for confession

Do you suffer from a stone in your soul, want to speak out to someone and find forgiveness? Confession greatly eases morale. She acts openly, with the most sincere recognition and repentance for her sins.

Confession is allowed up to three times a week. The desire to remove your sins can help you cope with stiffness and awkwardness. The less often a person goes to confess, the more difficult it is for him to revive in his memory all the bad deeds he has committed. The most important rule is that the priest understands the true meaning of sin in order to impose adequate punishment.

In especially difficult situations, penance is imposed. Penance is punishment, excommunication from sacred ordinances and the grace of God. How long it will last in time is decided by the priest.

As a rule, punishment is understood as the observance of moral and corrective labor - for example, fasting, reciting prayers, canons and akathist. In some cases, the list of punishments may vary.

If a person is seriously ill or dies, then the Holy Father is invited to confession directly at home.

Overview of the sacrament of confession

Once at the temple, take the line to confess. During the ritual, there is a cross with the Gospel on the lectern - symbols of the constant presence of Christ. Before the ceremony, the clergyman may ask how often you pray, whether you adhere to the basic church rules, and ask similar questions.

After this, the process of the sacrament itself begins. If a person has repeated the sins that were forgiven him in the last confession, it is imperative to stipulate this point, in such a case the offense will be more serious.

In confession, do not seek to withhold any information or speak with the help of hints. Express yourself in understandable words so that it is clear what exactly you are repenting of.

At the end, the priest breaks the list of sins for confession - this means that it is completed and your sins have been forgiven. Also, at the end, an epitrachelion is superimposed on the head - a symbol of God's mercy. Then you need to kiss the cross with the Gospel, which will become a manifestation of the desire to adhere to the basic commandments.

Proper preparation for confession

The rite of confession is intended for the purpose so that a person can comprehend his sins and correct them. If you are far from the church life, it can be difficult for you to realize which of the actions to be classified as wicked. For this purpose, the ten commandments were invented, clearly prescribing what should not be done categorically.

In the case when a person goes to confession for the first time, it may be problematic for him to disassemble the seven fundamental sins and commandments on his own. Then it is better to visit the priest first, having talked with him personally and shared with him your difficulties. Thanks to this, you will greatly facilitate the process of preparing for the sacrament of confession.

List of male sins

Many people cannot come to an unambiguous conclusion whether the list of sins is important for confession. Some say that such a list will harm the sacrament and turn it into a formal reading of offenses.

The most important thing in the process of confession is the awareness of your sins, sincere repentance and rejection of them in the future. This means that the list of sins can turn into only a brief reminder, or you can do without it if you do not feel a special need for it.

The balance of spiritual life consists in realizing the essence of repentance, in which confession is only the beginning of realizing one's sinfulness. Confession is a long process, which is made up of some stages of work on oneself.

  • lack of faith, doubt that there is life after death;

Confession for children

The Church allows confession for children from the age of seven. Parents will have to prepare their baby for confession in advance: explain to him the essence of the sacrament, explain why they resort to him and help the child remember all his possible sins.

It is important for the baby to realize that he should speak only the truth in confession. It is better if the child himself draws up a list of his bad transgressions. He should understand which of his actions were wrong and not repeat them in the future.

Older children need to make their own decisions about whether they want to confess. Do not try to limit the free will of teenagers. Sometimes the personal examples of the parents are much more important than any conversations.

To help your baby compile a list of sins for confession, you must first ask him a series of questions:

  1. Does the baby pray (in the morning and evening hours, before eating). What prayers he knows.
  2. Does she go to the temple?
  3. Has he ever lied to his parents?
  4. Was it not such that he put his successes and victories above the successes of others (began to become arrogant)?
  5. Does he get into fights with other kids, does he offend them?
  6. Is he lying against other kids in order to save himself?
  7. Did you ever steal, did you show envy?
  8. Did you ridicule the physical flaws of others?
  9. Did he resort to smoking, alcohol, drugs, foul language?
  10. Are you too lazy to help your parents?
  11. Does he sometimes play sick in order not to fulfill his duties?

The Importance of Sincerity in Confession

In the process of confession, the priest also takes on the role of a psychologist, he is able to recognize the degree of sincerity of a person in his repentance. After all, there may be such types of confessions that offend the sacrament and God.

If, for example, an individual in a mechanical form simply remembers his sins, confesses to several confessors at once, seeks to conceal the truth - with the help of such actions, repentance cannot be achieved.

At the same time, great importance is attached to behavior, the tone of speech with which a person confesses. This (plus the presence of pangs of conscience) helps the priest to be confident in the sincerity of the repentant.

Also, in some cases, the personality of the clergyman matters to a person. But this should not be a reason for condemning or commenting on the actions of the clergy. If for some reason your spiritual father is unpleasant to you, you can always change him by contacting another temple.

Some sins and bad actions give a person so much moral suffering that he does not even dare to voice them aloud. In such cases, the option of compiling a list of sins and forgiving them by the clergyman even without reading and viewing is allowed.

The sacrament of confession is a test for the soul. It consists of the desire to repent, verbal confession, repentance for sins. When a person goes against the laws of God, he gradually destroys his spiritual and physical shell. Repentance helps to cleanse. It reconciles a person with God. The soul is healed and receives strength to fight against sin.

Confession allows you to talk about your wrongdoings and receive forgiveness. In excitement and fear, you can forget what you wanted to repent of. Formal confession is not considered valid because there is no remorse in it. The return after the sacrament to the former life will add hypocrisy. The balance of spiritual life consists in understanding the essence of repentance, where confession is only the beginning of realizing one's sinfulness. This is a lengthy process with several stages of internal work. The creation of spiritual resources is a systematic adjustment of conscience, responsibility for one's relationship with God.

Here is a list of sins for confession (short) for a man:

  1. Blasphemy, talking in the temple.
  2. Doubt about faith, afterlife.
  3. Blasphemy, mockery of the poor.

Confession for a child

For a child, the sacrament of confession can be started from the age of seven. Until this age, children are allowed to take Communion without this. Parents should prepare the child for confession: explain the essence of the sacrament, tell what it is for, remember with him possible sins.

The child must be made to understand that sincere repentance is preparation for confession. The list of the sinful child is better to write yourself. He must realize which actions were wrong, try not to repeat them in the future.

Older children make their own decisions about whether to confess or not. You should not limit the free will of a child or teenager. The personal example of the parents is much more important than all the conversations.

The kid must remember his sins before confession. A list of them can be made after the child answers the questions:

  • How often does he read a prayer (in the morning, in the evening, before meals), which one does he know by heart?
  • Does he go to church, how does he behave in the service?
  • Does he wear a pectoral cross, is he distracted or not during prayers and services?
  • Have you ever deceived your parents or priest during confession?
  • Was he not proud of his successes, victories, was he conceited?
  • Does it fight or not with other children, does it offend kids or animals?
  • Does she bully other children to shield herself?
  • Did he commit theft, did he envy anyone?
  • Did you laugh at other people's physical handicaps?
  • Have you played cards (smoked, drank alcohol, tried drugs, swore foul language)?
  • Lazy or helping parents around the house?
  • Did he pretend to be sick in order to avoid his duties?
  1. The person himself determines whether to confess to him or not, how many times to attend the sacrament.
  2. A list of sins for confession should be prepared. It is better to take a sample in the church where the sacrament will take place, or find it yourself in church literature.
  3. It is optimal to go to confession with the same priest, who will become a mentor, will contribute to spiritual growth.
  4. Confession is free of charge.

First, you need to inquire on what days are confessions in the temple. Dress appropriately. For men, a shirt or T-shirt with sleeves, trousers or jeans (not shorts). For women - a headscarf, no makeup (at least lipstick), a skirt not higher than the knees.

Sincerity of confession

A priest as a psychologist can recognize how sincere a person is in his repentance. There is a confession that offends the sacrament and the Lord. If a person mechanically talks about sins, has several confessors, hides the truth - such actions do not lead to repentance.

Behavior, tone of speech, words used to pronounce confession - all this matters. Only in this way the priest understands how sincere the penitent is. The pangs of conscience, embarrassment, worries, shame contribute to spiritual cleansing.

Sometimes the personality of a priest is important to a parishioner. This is not a reason to condemn and comment on the actions of the clergy. You can go to another church or turn to another holy father for confession.

It can be difficult to voice your sins. The emotional experience is so strong that it is more convenient to make a list of unrighteous actions. Father is attentive to every parishioner. If because of shame it is impossible to tell about everything and repentance deeply, then the sins, the list of which has been compiled before confession, the priest has the right to forgive without even reading them.

The meaning of confession

Having to talk about your sins in front of a stranger is embarrassing. Therefore, people refuse to go to confession, believing that God will forgive them anyway. This is the wrong approach. The priest acts only as a mediator between man and God. His task is to determine the measure of repentance. The father has no right to condemn anyone, he will not expel the repentant from the temple. At confession, people are very vulnerable, and priests try not to cause unnecessary suffering.

It is important to see your sin, to realize and condemn it in your soul, to voice it before the priest. Have a desire not to repeat your wrongdoings, to try to atone for the harm done by deeds of mercy. Confession brings revival of the soul, re-education and access to a new spiritual level.

Sins (list), Orthodoxy, confession imply self-knowledge and the search for grace. All good deeds are done through force. Only by overcoming oneself, engaging in deeds of mercy, by cultivating virtues in oneself, can one receive God's grace.

The meaning of confession lies in understanding the typology of sinners, the typology of sin. At the same time, an individual approach to each repentant is akin to pastoral psychoanalysis. The sacrament of confession is pain from the realization of sin, recognition of it, determination to voice and ask for forgiveness for it, purification of the soul, joy and peace.

The person must feel the need for repentance. Love for God, love for oneself, love for one's neighbor cannot exist separately. The symbolism of the Christian cross - horizontal (love for God) and vertical (love for oneself and one's neighbor) - consists in realizing the integrity of spiritual life, its essence.

A Brief Preceding Confession (based on materials from Orthodox publications)

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ! Preparing to begin the great sacrament of holy confession, looking at the mercy of God, let us ask ourselves if we have shown mercy to our neighbors, have we reconciled with everyone, do not have enmity in our hearts against someone, remembering the cherished words of the Holy Gospel: "If you let go of a man their transgressions, your Heavenly Father will forgive you also "(Matthew 6: 14). This is the condition that we must understand and observe in the saving work of holy repentance. However, in order to repent and receive the remission of sins, you must see your sin. It’s not that easy. Self-love, self-pity, self-justification interferes with this. We are inclined to consider an evil deed, in which our conscience denounces us, as an "accident", to blame circumstances or neighbors for it. Meanwhile, every sin in deed, word or thought is a consequence of the passion that lives in us - a kind of spiritual illness.

If we find it difficult to recognize our sin, then it is even more difficult to see the passion rooted in us. So, you can live without suspecting the passion of pride in yourself, until someone touches us. Then passion will be revealed through sin: a wish for evil to the offender, a harsh offensive word, and even revenge. Fighting passions is the main activity for every Christian.

Usually people who are inexperienced in spiritual life do not see the multitude of their sins, do not feel their heaviness, and disgust towards them. They say: “I didn’t commit anything special,” “I have only minor sins, like everyone else,” “I didn’t steal, I didn’t kill,” so many often begin confession. But our holy fathers and teachers, who left us prayers of repentance, considered themselves the first of sinners, cried out to Christ with sincere conviction: "Nobody else have sinned on earth from time immemorial, as if I sinned, you accursed and prodigal!" The brighter the light of Christ illumines the heart, the more clearly all the shortcomings, ulcers and wounds of the soul are recognized. And vice versa: people immersed in sinful darkness do not see anything in their hearts, and if they do, they are not horrified, since they have nothing to compare with, for Christ is closed to them by the veil of sins. Therefore, in order to overcome our spiritual laziness and insensibility, the holy Church set preparatory days for the sacrament of repentance, and then for Communion - fasting. The period of fasting can last from three days to a week, if there is no special advice or prescription for that from the confessor. At this time, one should observe fasting, keep oneself from sinful deeds, thoughts and feelings, in general, lead a life of abstinence, repentance, diluted with deeds of love and Christian goodness. During the period of retreat, one should attend church services as often as possible, pray at home more than usual, devote time to reading the works of the holy fathers, the lives of the saints, self-deepening and self-examination.

Understanding the moral state of your soul, you must try to distinguish between basic sins from their derivatives, roots - from leaves and fruits. One should also beware of falling into petty suspicion of every movement of the heart, losing the feeling of the important and unimportant, getting confused in the little things. A repentant must bring to confession not only a list of sins, but, most importantly, a penitential feeling; not a detailed account of his life, but a broken heart.

Knowing your sins does not mean repenting of them. But what can we do if our hearts, dried up from a sinful flame, are not watered with the life-giving waters of tears? What if spiritual weakness and "fleshly lack of feeling" are so great that we are not capable of sincere repentance? But this cannot be a reason to postpone confession in anticipation of a repentant feeling. The Lord accepts confession - sincere and conscientious - even if it is not accompanied by strong feelings of repentance. Only this sin - petrified insensibility - must be confessed courageously and frankly, without hypocrisy. God can touch the heart during confession itself - soften it, refine spiritual vision, awaken a repentant feeling.

The condition that we must certainly observe in order for our repentance to be accepted by the Lord effectively is the forgiveness of the sins of our neighbors and reconciliation with everyone. Repentance cannot be perfect without a verbal confession of sins. Sins can be resolved only in the church sacrament of repentance performed by a priest.

Confession is a feat, self-compulsion. During confession, you do not need to wait for questions from the priest, but make an effort yourself. It is necessary to name sins accurately, without obscuring the ugliness of sin with general expressions. It is very difficult, while confessing, to avoid the temptation of self-justification, to abandon attempts to explain "extenuating circumstances" to the confessor, from references to third parties who allegedly led us into sin. All these are signs of self-love, a lack of deep repentance, and continued stagnation in sin.

Confession is not a conversation about one's shortcomings, doubts, it is not a simple informing the confessor about oneself, although spiritual conversation is also very important and should take place in the life of a Christian, but confession is another, it is a sacrament, and not just a pious custom. Confession is an ardent repentance of the heart, a thirst for cleansing, this is a second baptism. In repentance, we die to sin and rise to righteousness, holiness.

After repentance, we must be confirmed internally in our determination not to return to confessed sin. The sign of perfect repentance is hatred and aversion to sin, a feeling of lightness, purity, inexplicable joy, when sin seems as difficult and impossible as this joy was just distant.

Human life is so diverse, so mysterious is the depth of our soul that it is difficult even to list all the sins and sins that we commit. Therefore, starting the sacrament of holy confession, it is useful to remind yourself of the basic violations of the moral law of the Holy Gospel. Let us carefully check our conscience and repent of our sins before the Lord God. The sacrament of holy repentance has the main goal - to awaken our spiritual consciousness, open our eyes to ourselves, come to our senses, deeply understand in what destructive state our soul is, how it is necessary to seek salvation from God, to ask tearfully and contritely for the forgiveness of our countless sins before Him. The Lord Jesus Christ expects from us a sincere awareness of our deviations from His holy will and humble appeal to Him as unworthy of His servants, many who have sinned and have offended His Divine love for us.

We need to remember and deeply believe in the infinite mercy of God extending its arms to every sinner who is converted. There is no sin that God, by His ineffable mercy, would not forgive a person who showed sincere repentance for his sins, a firm determination to correct his life and not return to previous sins. Coming to confession, let us pray to God that He, with His almighty help, would open the doors of repentance to us, reconcile and unite with Himself, and grant the Holy Spirit for a new and renewed life. Amen!

For convenience, sins can be written on a piece of paper and read in front of the priest. Sins, confessed and resolved earlier, should not be named in confession, because they have already been forgiven, but if we repeat them again, then we need to repent of them again. It is also necessary to repent of those sins that were forgotten, but are now remembered. Speaking of sins, one should not mention unnecessary details and names of other persons who are accomplices in sin. They must repent for themselves. The habits of sin are eradicated by prayer, fasting, abstinence, and good deeds. Confession is performed in the church after the evening service or by agreement with the priest at any time.
