Practical vinyl wallpaper: characteristics, description and types. Vinyl wallpaper - the secrets of choosing Vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen

Vinyl wallpaper, as they are called otherwise, is a wall covering on a non-woven or paper basis. But why then vinyl, and is this name correct?

Paper or interlining is the bottom layer of this type of wallpaper, but the top one is made of polyvinyl chloride, which is simply called vinyl. This is a coating with the inclusion of polymers and often also includes special antifungal impregnations.

Vinyl wallpaper will celebrate its 70th anniversary next year, as it was so many years ago that the first tube of vinyl wallpaper was introduced.

Vinyl wallpaper: description

The top layer of such wallpaper is most often decorated with something - thematic illustrations, motifs, plots, or some interesting embossing. Since all the innovations of the light industry are involved in the manufacture of vinyl wallpaper, the coating is both elegant, aesthetic, spectacular in appearance, and quite durable and resistant to mechanical damage.

Performance characteristics: wallpaper vinyl

Polyvinyl chloride is not the basis of wallpaper, but only a decorative layer. The base is made of interlining or paper.

PVC - polyvinyl chloride - is a colorless plastic. Its operational properties are quite good, the composition is water-repellent, it also repels fat and salt. From this material, by the way, artificial leather, a film, an edge for furniture are made.

Pros and cons of vinyl wallpaper

The advantages of this type of wallpaper, of course, will take far from two or three points. And not all of the potential buyer knows.

Pros of vinyl wallpaper:

  • Such wallpaper can be pasted over virtually any surface - from a concrete wall to drywall and plaster;
  • Embossed wallpaper, due to its texture, helps to hide small wall defects;
  • Vinyl wallpaper is applicable in a variety of rooms;
  • A rich palette of colors, drawings, plots;
  • Wallpaper format options - both standard sizes and wide, meter-long wallpapers;
  • The ability to choose a model, from fairly budget to elite.

It is impossible, of course, by highlighting the pros, not to touch on the cons that vinyl wallpapers have.

Cons of vinyl wallpaper:

  • They do not belong to the type of breathable wallpaper, but all because the top layer resists the influence of moisture, which interferes with interaction with air (however, there are wallpapers made using technology with the creation of special micropores);
  • It is not always easy to glue the walls with vinyl wallpaper, and the point is not even in the process, but in compliance with all technologies and instructions;
  • They do not tolerate temperature changes and humidity changes.

The last point does not mean that you will very quickly feel these disadvantages in practice. But if you want, for example, to ventilate the room in frosty weather, and in the meantime it will be above 22 in the room, then cases of wallpaper deformation are not excluded.

Are vinyl wallpapers harmful to health: the answer of experts

After re-reading the disadvantages of vinyl wallpaper for walls, many will be surprised that it is not said about the harm of this material, about the environmental friendliness of the wallpaper. There is already a well-established opinion that vinyl wallpapers are not safe for humans. But what is dangerous - few people know.

This myth is connected with a simple judgment: the top layer of polyvinyl chloride is the brainchild of chemical production, and chemistry is a priori unhealthy.

But the obvious harm lies only in the fact that the wallpaper does not "breathe". But the toxic fumes of formaldehyde, which really affect the development of allergies in humans, have nothing to do with high-quality vinyl wallpaper.

It is not necessary to purchase expensive imports, the same wallpaper from the domestic manufacturer Mayakprint is not inferior to foreign counterparts.

Vinyl wallpaper: customer reviews

The same reviews have considerable advantages when choosing wallpaper: for example, people advise each other on how to distinguish real high-quality vinyl wallpapers from fakes.

Reviews - how to choose vinyl wallpaper:

  • Be sure to read the information on the label;
  • Do not purchase wallpaper with a pronounced smell;
  • Unwind the roll at home, but do not cut it right away, but check for marriage.

And, of course, familiarize yourself in advance with the possible designations that say how to glue, and how long the wallpaper dries, etc.

Designations on vinyl wallpaper

The designations on the labels are a whole alphabet, and a complete decoding of all the icons must be given as a separate material. But you can limit yourself to a list of the most common ones.

Icon interpretation:

  • Single line. These wallpapers will be resistant to moisture.
  • two lines. This already speaks of increased stability.
  • Three lines. Accordingly, high stability.
  • Filled semicircle of the sun. Speaks of sufficient light fastness.
  • An unshaded semicircle of the sun with a cross inside. Talks about relative light fastness.
  • hollow circle of the sun. Mark of good light fastness.
  • Hollow circle of the sun with a cross inside. High light fastness.
  • Two hollow dots in the form of a colon. Very high light fastness.
  • Arrow/Fraction/Zero. The drawing does not need to be customized.
  • Two multidirectional arrows and a fraction. Indeterminate drawing.

Of course, there are a number of signs that tell you how to use the glue, which one, and whether it has already been applied to the surface.

Types of vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpapers differ according to the type of coating.

Wallpaper has four main types of coverage:

  • foam vinyl. They are distinguished by a clear, very clearly defined relief. This is a lightweight wallpaper, easy to work with, easy to shoot. The porous surface makes this type of wallpaper permeable, but it’s not worth it to wet them in connection with this.
  • Dense (smooth vinyl). It is a durable washable cover. The color of such a coating does not fade in the sun. Such wallpapers are often glued in rooms with high humidity.
  • hard vinyl. A very dense, moreover, permeable material, outwardly often resembling decorative plaster, tile or textile coating.
  • Silkscreen. The surface of such vinyl wallpaper resembles silk, thanks to the hot stamping method. The showiness of such wallpapers has made them extremely popular in recent years.

Solid wallpaper is sometimes referred to as compact vinyl.

Compact vinyl wallpaper: what is their feature

Firstly, these wallpapers are perfect for the kitchen or bathroom, that is, rooms with high humidity. Secondly, they allow you to create in the room a certain imitation of a more expensive or original coating - natural stone, decorative plaster, expensive textiles.

It is interesting that outwardly the effect is so great that only a close examination can reveal the so-called substitution. Only unlike the same stone or textiles, they are very easy to care for, which increases the life of such wallpapers.

Vinyl wallpaper in the interior

Modern design has transformed wallpaper from a generic cover into an almost limitless range of possibilities. The walls visually shift, the rooms become wider and higher, they are zoned, styles are clearly traced. And this certainly applies to vinyl wallpaper.

Examples of interior transformation with vinyl wallpaper:

  • Records. Such a print can originally beat the name of the vinyl, and is suitable for a young man's room or, for example, a studio apartment.
  • Yellow wallpaper with flowers. This is a sunny interior, if the flowers are small - Provence style, large stylized flowers in pronounced computer graphics - eclecticism, pop art, etc.
  • sky with clouds. For a spacious nursery, a very good option.
  • Strip. This is a classic. Moreover, it is not necessary to paste over all four walls in the room with such wallpaper, just the central one is enough.
  • White. Ideal for scandi style or small living room.

If you choose a wallpaper with a retro pattern or a vintage touch, you can recreate the interior of a bygone era of stylish thirties or fifties.

In most cases, wallpaper is used to finish the walls. The most common are vinyl, they are the most practical and affordable. Having pasted such wallpapers on the walls, it will be possible to forget about repairs for a long time.

Unusual color combination in the kitchen

Kinds

You can organize a large assortment of vinyl wallpapers by decomposing them into groups according to the classes of decorative material. There will be several groups in total:

  • foamed vinyl is cheap and simple, it is very easy to damage such vinyl, so it is not suitable for a kitchen or hallway;
  • compact vinyl is an inexpensive, but practical material, the properties of which allow it to be used in a variety of rooms, including in the interior of the kitchen;
  • kitchen vinyl - soft and lightweight material that can withstand washing, does not absorb odors, has either a neutral color or themed, suitable for the kitchen;
  • Rigid Vinyl - hot embossed wallpapers are the strongest and most durable, ready to be used everywhere from the kitchen to the bedroom.

Despite the fact that all these wallpapers are vinyl, their production technologies can differ dramatically. As a result, the practical characteristics of different types of vinyl are different.

Foamed vinyl wallpapers are considered the simplest and least functional. This coating is easily deformed and damaged. The moisture resistance of such wallpapers is at a low level, their most important advantage is the cost.

Glass apron protects the wallpaper from grease

Kitchen vinyl is already a better material, it is given moisture-resistant qualities by special reagents that fix the foam material during the production process. The texture of these wallpapers is also very delicate, but already ready to endure rubbing with a rag or sponge.

Hard vinyl is the most expensive and high quality, its characteristics can be called exceptional. It is easy to use and extremely wear-resistant, therefore, after gluing it once, you can admire it for a very long time.

Among all these groups, compact vinyl wallpapers stand out, which are both good in quality and affordable.

Compact vinyl

The vinyl material, which is smooth and extremely dense to the touch, is called compact vinyl. It is created by heating and pressing PVC. Embossing is applied in several stages, therefore, despite the thinness of the wallpaper, the relief is clearly visible. Next comes the staining process, which also occurs several times.

The first successful colors of compact vinyl can be considered ornaments for classic natural materials: brick, stone, plaster, and later leather. Such wallpapers fit into the interior easily and naturally, they fit in terms of graphics and functionality. For many years, brickwork wallpaper was a bestseller, but now the hype has subsided.

Wallpaper for brickwork in the kitchen

Now more colors have been invented for compact vinyl, classic patterns have been applied: flowers, monograms, stripes. It is easy to choose wallpaper from compact vinyl for the bedroom, living room, kitchen. In addition, the cost of this type of finishing material is not as high as, for example, hot stamping.

If we talk about all the advantages of these vinyl wallpapers, then we can come to the following:

  • low price - compared to other high-quality wallpapers;
  • the presence of choice, there are options for different rooms: from the bedroom to the kitchen;
  • ease of gluing, due to the density and non-ductility of the material;
  • good strength characteristics, resistance to mechanical damage;
  • durability of the pattern, no fading from sunlight;
  • moisture resistance, the ability to tolerate wet cleaning with a brush;
  • service life, minimum 10 years, maximum unknown.

The disadvantages of wallpaper include the possibility of releasing chemical fumes into the environment of the room and the inability to pass air through itself. Vapors will not cause serious harm to a person, but it is better to refrain from sticking this type of wallpaper in a nursery, so to speak, to play it safe. Lack of breathability in a humid environment can lead to mold and mildew growth.

You can admire the compact vinyl in any hardware store. Usually they are 53 centimeters in size and occupy several racks. Explore the colors of the wallpaper, choose according to your taste.

The richness of design options for vinyl wallpapers allows you to easily choose the ones you need for any kitchen design.

When Our Desires Match Offers

It is no coincidence that they say that everything new is a well-forgotten old. Washable vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen was first released just after World War II, in 1947. But the real boom in their use came precisely in our time, when everyone suddenly felt the benefits of such an innovative building material as vinyl.

PVC is used everywhere today - on roofs, windows, including wallpaper, giving them irreplaceable qualities specifically for use in the kitchen.

Someone jokingly, or maybe seriously, in one TV show about health, called the bathroom the most “dirty” room in any apartment. Paradox! And this place, in its essence, is called for perfect cleanliness.

Many, of course, will not agree with this opinion. At the very least, our whole attitude towards the bathroom rebels against such an opinion.

Now, if this “medical authority” named the kitchen as the dirtiest place, here, perhaps, there would be fewer objections. Indeed, the constant crowding of people, and even in outerwear and shoes, the constant washing of dirty vegetables, waste, cooking, in the end, do not contribute to cleanliness.

And why be surprised - we carry out major cleaning in the kitchen almost every day, in any case, more often than in any other room of the apartment.

And here vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen will act as an ally of any hostess, which have such indispensable properties as:

  • strength - such wallpapers consist of two layers: the lower one is non-woven (in a simple way, paper), which provides and facilitates the wallpapering, and the upper one is polyvinyl chloride;
  • reliability - the top layer of this PVC polymer film provides such reliability, which previously could only be dreamed of;
  • durability - again due to the characteristics of polymeric materials;
  • environmental friendliness - and here vinyl will give other materials "one hundred points ahead";
  • the possibility of wet cleaning - which for many years was only a dream of all zealous lovers of comfort and home;
  • excellent design qualities - and this is already a tribute to modern technologies, which, in fact, made it possible to look at washable vinyl wallpaper as a masterpiece of "finishing art".

Even when folded, washable vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen allows you to feel their beautiful design qualities.

The entire range of vinyl wallpapers on the market can be divided into two large groups:

  • without embossing - such wallpapers are usually quite dense, which makes it possible to successfully hide the unevenness of the walls. Such wallpapers are produced using vinyl foaming technology, which in itself attracts with its originality. The interior, created by such wallpaper, already at first glance is considered exclusive by many.
  • embossed, which is also called hot stamping vinyl wallpaper.

The range of embossing technologies on vinyl wallpaper is so wide that the created samples can also be divided into four large groups:

  • compact vinyl - wallpaper for the kitchen compact vinyl imitate on the wall, the so-called heavy materials - stone, tile, bulk plaster, even textiles. Such wallpapers allow you to perfectly hide the unevenness of the preparation of the wall. Moreover, this is one of their main advantages - you are freed from the time and resources spent on preparing the wall.
  • heavy vinyl - as a continuation of the advantages of compact vinyl. Uniqueness elevated to the rank of a cult is what the hostess strives for when she decides to use “heavy vinyl” wallpaper in the kitchen.
  • silk screen printing - this type of wallpaper can be called the brainchild of modern progress in finishing building materials, it can be done in another way - "name day of the heart" for any housewife. An incredible number of design solutions of the highest quality, for the most demanding taste - this is the main feature of this group. But here we have to say sacramental - beauty requires sacrifice. Such wallpapers require perfect preparation of the wall, these wallpapers, like a capricious beauty, are only occupied with their beauty, they will not even take care of “others”, they will not hide the unevenness of the walls.
  • wallpaper with chemical embossing or, scientifically, inhibition. Perhaps, it is these wallpapers that are ideal for the kitchen - they do not deteriorate at all under the influence of even direct sunlight and allow themselves to be washed even with the use of detergents.

Useful advice! Yes, do not be surprised many vinyl wallpapers, but they are often also called washable, they allow you to wash using detergents.

But, frankly, you should not do this:

  • avoid using detergents whenever possible;
  • avoid using aggressive detergents containing chlorine and acids, use, if necessary, only certified and extremely mild ones;
  • avoid, in any case, the use of too strong detergents.

Important! Even vinyl wallpapers should not be tested for resistance to aggressive washing - photos of such wallpapers before and after washing can greatly disappoint you.

More opportunities - more demands on yourself

  • What else turns out to be good vinyl wallpaper is that it can satisfy the tastes of the most demanding customers, with a variety of preferences and inclinations. And inveterate philosophers will find a reason for themselves to gossip about the vicissitudes of using such beauty that is accessible to everyone.
  • After all, even in this widest range of designer vinyl wallpaper has its own danger - the danger of bad taste and amateurism. Choose wallpapers that will closely match the design of the kitchen as a whole. Do not use too colored wallpaper, with gilding. Don't turn your kitchen into a "cafe across the street" branch.
  • Yes, the more opportunities we are given, the more scrupulously and with more exactingness we must make a choice.

Skillful matching of the edges of adjacent sheets and their careful processing will make the joints completely invisible

  • To paraphrase Woland from The Master and Margarita, let's say: "Taste and sense of proportion should be the law of anyone who wants to use vinyl wallpaper in their kitchen." The situation, perhaps, is simplified a little if you are the happy owner of a kitchen of 80 square meters.
  • But if you only have a 3 by 4 room at your disposal, you should not “dress” it with silk-screen printing, the price of which will pull on all the furniture of such a kitchen.

You may not want to constantly sit in such a flowering garden,
a similar design is more suitable for a cafe, but as an original panel descending from above, this design is simply wonderful

  • Use familiar, neutral colors that always match perfectly with the overall interior. It does not interfere, of course, to think over and calculate everything in advance. But these colors free you even from "those hectic steps into the future" - they will suit any furniture, lighting and kitchen equipment.

If you're into traditional neutral tones and patterns, this is where kitchen vinyl wallpaper can help.

The time when ordinary paper wallpapers were very popular has long passed. Today, vinyl wallpapers for the kitchen are in great demand - this is an excellent choice that will make your dining room a paradise.

Characteristic

  • Such rolls are made of dense fabric or paper-based material, which is supplemented on top with a PVC coating in the form of a film. Such a coating, in addition to giving the material more strength, also prevents the occurrence of various fungi and mold;
  • There is one simple way that will help you determine how high quality rolls from the catalog you want to purchase. All you have to do is compress the roll. If it returns to its original shape fairly quickly, then the trellises are of good quality. If we compare non-woven vinyl types with traditional ones, then the latter are not able to withstand a high level of humidity. Because of this, they may soon lose their original appearance;

  • Among their advantages, resistance to sunlight and a long service life can be distinguished, as can be seen in the photo;
  • Sticking these types is not difficult and, if necessary, they can be peeled off quite easily. Unlike ordinary rolls, they will not change in size even after complete drying.

Types

The first vinyl wallpaper appeared in the middle of the last century. However, only at the end of the 70s was it possible to establish their mass production. As soon as such non-woven products appeared on the domestic market, the local consumer immediately appreciated their advantages over conventional paper products. They have gained such high popularity not only because of their beautiful appearance, as seen in the photo catalogs, but also because of their high quality and durability. To date, the range of such coatings is quite large and the most common types can be called such as:

  • Hard vinyl trellises;
  • For painting;
  • For kitchen;
  • Compact vinyl and others.

On the one hand, a rich assortment allows you to choose exactly those tapestries that are best suited for your kitchen. But on the other hand, a person who does not understand them can easily get confused and buy not quite what is needed. It is best to first get acquainted with the entire range of products of this type.

Compact vinyl

Compact vinyl is a wallpaper that looks like stone, textiles or other elements that imitate natural materials. Through such materials, you can visually remove the roughness of your walls. This material can be washed, it is also quite durable and has a long service life. Thanks to this type of vinyl rolls, you can create a stylish interior in the kitchen, as shown in the photo. Such material is included in the expensive price category, but you need to understand that cheap material cannot be of high quality.

silkscreen

Silkscreen printing is one of the popular types of compact vinyl. Such tapestries are made on the basis of paper, and consist of several layers. The outer layer is vinyl. This type has a beautiful appearance, as it can shimmer in shades or have a pearly sheen. The inner layer consists of artificial or silk threads.

Rolls with silk threads from the catalog can be glued in the living room or in the hallway, as they will create a rather luxurious look for the interior of these rooms.

These rolls are ideal for bathrooms or toilets. They have good resistance to moisture, and are ideal for those rooms where ordinary wallpaper quickly loses its appearance due to moisture.

hard vinyl

You can purchase wallpaper made of hard type vinyl. Such vinyl is subjected to heat treatment during manufacture, which allows all harmful components to be removed from the material. Also among their advantages can be identified a high level of air permeability. This is due to the fact that for their manufacture a paper substrate is used, consisting of three layers. Such material is not afraid of the sun's rays, which means that they will not fade. Also, through such wallpapers, you can imitate any material, whether it is watercolor or leather, as seen in the photo.

However, they are also somewhat more demanding. They can only be glued to even walls, since during the application of glue to them they can stretch somewhat.

kitchen vinyl

Kitchen vinyl, in comparison with other similar materials, has a higher density. Such trellises are classified as super washable. Such material can even compete with ceramic tiles, and they can be pasted over a washbasin, on a kitchen countertop, or on a bathroom countertop, as shown in the photo.

There is one small drawback with this type of rolls, they are not as durable as the previous types. In the kitchen, you can choose coatings with gastronomic motifs.

Summing up

Vinyl wallpapers stand out for their rich assortment. However, such a wide choice can easily confuse a beginner. They are ideal for rooms with high humidity, so they can be safely glued in the kitchen. To prevent the tapestries from losing their original appearance, you can purchase washable types that do not require special care. All you need to do is wipe them with a damp cloth.

The kitchen is a high-traffic and high-traffic area. Even in the presence of a hood, odors, fats, splashes of water, in large quantities are observed from day to day. No matter how clean the hostess is, only a properly selected wall covering will allow you to maintain a neat appearance of the kitchen not for the first month after the repair, but for several years. Despite the mass of modern finishing materials that take into account the specifics of use, the most popular are vinyl wallpapers for the kitchen, which appeared in the last century.

What was and how it became

Vinyl is an artificial material derived from polyesters, polyvinyl chloride. They began to produce wallpapers on its basis back in the post-war period, when there was a lot of chemical raw materials, but it was difficult with natural ones. Few people saw what the imported samples looked like, but the older generation remembers well the derivative of the Land of the Soviets. The wallpaper was hard, with the simplest texture, and more like oilcloth. And what kind of torment it cost to paste over the walls with them, is another story. Moreover, a persistent, specific smell settled in the rooms, which was very reluctant to weather. Therefore, not many people decided to use vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen at that time, referring them to bathrooms and hallways.

Today, vinyl wallpaper is a combination of many positive characteristics, thanks to which they successfully hold the palm, and are not going to give it to plastic panels, MDF and structural plasters.

  • Durable - vinyl is not afraid of mechanical damage, it is almost impossible to scratch it by accidentally hitting it with the leg of a chair or even with a fork clamped in the fist of a small naturalist crawling all over the apartment. He is not afraid of water either, even if you process it from a hose, moisture rolls off without penetrating inside, just like fat and dirt.
  • Durable - the surface does not burn out, does not wear out, does not shrink due to high humidity and temperature. Since vinyl wallpapers for the kitchen are washable and designed for wet cleaning, and if necessary, they can withstand even a fine abrasive, it will not be difficult to restore them to their original appearance. However, you should not use "heavy artillery", knowing our hostesses, they will ruin any surface if they set the task of achieving a mirror shine. Planned general cleaning with a sponge and soapy water, and the walls as after a fresh renovation.
  • Eco-friendly - modern PVC is manufactured in compliance with safety standards, from high-quality, proven raw materials. Wallpaper does not have an unpleasant odor and does not emit toxic substances into the environment. The kitchen will not become an analogue of a chemical laboratory, in which it is safe to walk only in a respirator.
  • Easy to use - thanks to the two-layer structure, consisting of an inner paper layer (non-woven fabric) and an outer vinyl layer, the wallpaper does not deform. They can be folded "accordion" without the formation of creases, which is necessary when the master is alone, and the height is large. Interlining sticks to walls quickly, air bubbles are quickly removed by light smoothing, and not by a race over the entire surface, as a result of which seven sweats from the master and half of the paint from the canvas. With vinyl washable wallpaper and glue is washed off without consequences.
  • Undemanding to the surface - the structure of vinyl wallpapers is embossed, regardless of the variety and pattern, which is due to the production method. This texture allows you to stick wallpaper on rough walls that are not puttied with a finishing layer with small irregularities and defects.
  • Decorative - there are so many types, colors and textures on sale that it’s unrealistic to list, and it’s difficult to choose, your eyes run wide. Vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen can decorate even Khrushchev.

Varieties of wall vinyl

Vinyl washable wallpaper is available in several varieties, they differ in density, structure and appearance.

  • Structural - foamed, without embossing. During heat treatment, the vinyl foams and hardens, resulting in a loose, embossed surface. With such vinyl wallpaper, it is good to compensate for the jambs of plasterers when you do not want to spend money on puttying and finishing.
  • For painting - a kind of foam, but differ in composition and structure. Designed for coloring, so they are available in white or neutral tones. It is the most for creative natures, fertile ground for the flight of design fantasies. If you paint with a smooth roller, you get a two-color surface, since the ruts do not stain. When using a pile roller, you can highlight the base with one color, and a contrasting canvas.
  • Hot stamping - until the foam mass is frozen, a given texture and pattern is stamped on it. Compact vinyl and heavy vinyl are produced in this way. These are massive, dense wallpapers, repeating the surface of brickwork, wild stone, decorative plasters, such as bark beetle or marble.
  • Inhibited - a subspecies of embossing, but not by heating, but by chemical reagents. As a result, the surface is not only convex, but also very durable, this vinyl wallpaper is not afraid of anything, they, like heavy ones, can be glued directly to concrete and they will stick.
  • Silk-screen printing - flat vinyl wallpaper, the surface seems to be rolled out, with simultaneous embossing of a textile pattern. The most beautiful type of vinyl wallpaper, both tactile and visually repeating the structure of silk. They look stylish and expensive, which is not surprising, given the crazy cost per roll. Such valuable vinyl wallpapers for the kitchen are rarely chosen, since the average family simply cannot afford their cost, and the place for this masterpiece is more likely in the hall or bedroom.
  • Hard Vinyl - Triple backed with paper and PVC is pre-evaporated before being applied to the base. It turns out the strongest surface, completely safe, since the chemistry is removed. Unlike other types, they are fire resistant and can be glued over the stove and geyser.

We choose thoughtfully

In the kitchen, where there are regular changes in temperature, humidity and constant crush, vinyl washable wallpaper is the place. But they should also be chosen carefully.

  • Heavy vinyl and compact vinyl are thick, and kitchens are usually small in size, in addition, deep grooves on the surface will quickly become clogged, and it will be almost impossible to clean out carbon deposits from there, only if you cut off the relief. Here, washing with an abrasive is powerless.
  • Silk-screen printing is expensive and too chic; against its background, a budget kitchen set will finally fade when paired with a corner. And the silk surface is washed worse than other types.
  • By elimination, the choice falls on structural, inhibited and solid, the latter being the best choice for the kitchen. They are available in a huge range of colors and patterns, a light relief will hide imperfections, but will not become an obstacle to cleanliness. And the embossing will withstand fire, water, and copper pipes, if necessary, not to mention the sun's rays and cunning household members. The only drawback can be considered a higher cost, but to reduce the cost of repairs, you can combine them with inhibited ones by choosing a similar design. Glue solid ones over the sink and cooking area, and make the main canvas from structural ones.

disadvantages

Like everything else, vinyl wallpaper has not only advantages, but also some disadvantages.

  • Poor permeability. Cheap vinyl practically does not let air through, creating an unfavorable microclimate. Wallpapers of a higher category, at least slightly, but “breathe”. However, our grandmothers managed to paste over closets, called kitchens in high-rise buildings, with ordinary oilcloth, and even varnished it. What permeability is there, and nothing, and they themselves were constantly spinning there, and raised children, and looked after their grandchildren.
  • Docking. When pasting walls, you can not use an overlap, the seam sticks poorly and is very striking. If the walls were plastered by not quite sober cobblers and the consumption between levels is several centimeters, it is better to refuse washable vinyl wallpaper. And if there is an irresistible desire to make the kitchen unique, then you will first have to level the walls with a starting putty, it has a permissible layer of up to 5 cm and is lighter than cement mortar.

Taste matters

The bulk of manufacturers are trying to produce the most attractive, "rich" vinyl, interspersed with gilding and silver. In a large hall, with exquisite upholstered furniture, such a coating will look organic, but we are talking about the kitchen. Consequently:

  • we hold on to our imagination and give in to sanity - neutral shades, no lurid patterns;
  • before buying, we think over the general concept of repair, take into account the approximate color of the furniture, or the exact one, if there is not enough for a new one;
  • we take into account the angle of incidence of light and the brightness of the lighting, the roll on the demonstration stand can be turned in your hands, sometimes plain-looking wallpapers begin to “play” with the right lighting, and catchy and tempting in the roll are lost on the wall;
  • you should not buy a drawing that should match at the joints, it will add difficulties when gluing, and a large number of scraps will draw extra money out of your wallet.

Glue professionally

Even being home craftsmen, it is realistic to organize the gluing of washable vinyl wallpaper at the pro level. To do this, it is enough to follow a few recommendations.

  • Training. The better prepared the wall, the easier it is to glue the wallpaper. The old layer is completely removed, it is more efficient to peel it off wet, and moisten it with a spray gun or roller. Large cracks and potholes are cleaned, all loose particles must be removed. After stripping, they should be puttied, at least the most significant ones. If you dilute dry putty with a primer, you get a cheap analogue of an expensive finished mass. Before gluing, the walls must be covered with a primer with an antibacterial additive. It will reduce the consumption of glue, increase adhesion to the surface and prevent mold. The soil dries quickly, but it is better to process the walls a day before gluing.
  • Materials and tools. Vinyl wallpaper needs special glue, it is convenient if the composition is colored. Now it is diluted and swells immediately, without forming lumps. It makes sense to dilute the glue in two different containers, thicker for wallpaper and thinner for walls. Although the instructions say to apply only to the wall, non-woven fabric also needs to be covered with a thin layer, it is easier to adjust the canvas on the wall, and it seizes stronger. It is easier to smear with a roller or a wide paint brush, using a paint trough with excess ribs. Rags for expelling air and smoothing have sunk into oblivion, today craftsmen use rubber rollers and special scrapers. They are great to use in the corner, and they are effective over a large area, and uniform pressure ensures a snug fit of the canvas to the wall. The scrapers are made of plastic material, they are flexible, but not able to damage the surface. A professional tool significantly speeds up the process and improves its quality, and the scraper costs little, given that it can be used repeatedly.
