Repair of chipboard furniture: elimination of chips, scratches and cracks, restoration of a worn surface, materials and tools used. Repair of cabinet door hinges Repair furniture hinges

Furniture made of laminated particleboard has been and remains a priority purchase option for the vast majority of our population. Perhaps its main advantage is the affordable price, which can be obtained using chipboard, which is inexpensive relative to other materials (for example, wood). Thanks to the lamination of the surface of the slab, the furniture acquires a quite decent appearance and fits well into almost any.

However, like any other product, such furniture is prone to damage during operation or transportation. Now we will consider what damage is typical for this type of furniture, how you can make restoration and repair.

Typical damage

Let us describe the most common cases of chipboard damage that can be successfully eliminated with little effort:

  • chips;
  • scratches;
  • dents;
  • scuffs;
  • cracks.

Operation "Liquidation"

Elimination of chips

To repair chips on chipboard you will need:

  • retouching felt-tip pen (or ordinary suitable color);
  • hard tint wax;
  • wax melter or lighter for melting wax;
  • chisel or spatula;
  • felt fabric;
  • fixing spray varnish.

Chips usually appear at the corners and are small, light-colored (chipboard-colored) depressions.

The elimination process consists of several stages:

  1. Preparatory processing of the chip... In this case, it is necessary to process the chip with a chisel so that its edges become straight.
  2. Sealing the chip... For this, hard wax of a suitable color is melted with a wax melter or a lighter and applied to the chip with a small margin.
  3. Surface leveling... After the wax has dried with a chisel, after working on each plane, the excess wax is carefully cut off, forming a clear right angle of the surface, and light grinding is performed with a felt cloth.
  4. Texture restoration... With a thin retouching felt-tip pen, lines are applied along the chip in accordance with the overall texture, each time wiping with a paper towel for easy smearing of the clear line boundaries and greater believability.
  5. Opening with varnish... To fix the seal and to give the restored surface a characteristic shine, spray varnish is applied.

Eliminate scratches

Especially often such damage is found. To eliminate scratches, you will need the same tools for repairing furniture as for repairing chips, only instead of hard wax it will be more convenient to use a soft one.

How to remove scratches: work sequence

  1. With a spatula, wax is applied transversely to the scratch, at the same time compacting and leveling it.
  2. Use a thin retouching felt-tip pen to paint the missing texture.
  3. A fixing varnish is applied to fix the embedment site and level the surface gloss.

Chipboard scratch

Advice! To seal cracks if wax is not available, you can use a special furniture touch.

Restoration of a worn surface

Scuffs, like scratches, often occur on laminated chipboard due to constant contact with the surface of foreign objects. For example, you can find them or the kitchen.

As a result, the upper protective layer and partially or completely the paint layer are abraded.

In order to eliminate the abrasion that has already appeared, you need to do a few simple manipulations:

    1. Place a microfiber cloth over your finger and moisten it with a suitable colored felt tip pen.
    2. Use a napkin to touch up the abrasion by rubbing along the location of the surface structure.
    3. Apply the fixing varnish in several thin layers.

Elimination of cracks

Cracks on chipboard furniture often appear under the influence of moisture, heat or improper operation at the point where the cabinet doors are attached.

To repair cabinet furniture with your own hands, you will need:

  • clamps (adjustable clamps);
  • syringe with a needle;
  • pVA glue.

Repair process:

  1. In a syringe without a needle (for easier and faster penetration), PVA glue is collected and a needle is put on.
  2. Using a syringe, fill the entire inner volume of the crack with glue.
  3. Put a clamp on the slab on the sides of the crack and pull it together.
  4. Remove excess glue with a napkin and leave in this position for at least a day.

After the glue has dried, the element will be ready for use again.

Briefly about the materials

My phone rang, who's talking? No, of course, not an elephant, but a friend. And he got into trouble. The little daughters pulled out the closet door once again. Previous methods of returning the hinges to their place have exhausted themselves, since the screws no longer held in the chipboard. Since the hinges were not pulled out for the first time, the base of the hinge was screwed in different places many times and the chipboard looked like a sieve, but the problem had to be solved. After a little thought, I offered several options for solving the problem with torn loops:

The first option is extreme, expensive and dreary to make a copy of the side wall of the cabinet and replace it. But this option, as I said, was the very last, when there will be no more options.

The second option is to displace the base of the hinge, which attaches the hinge to the side wall and screwing the hinge in this place. But this option had been passed earlier and could no longer be applied.

Another option is to move the hinge completely, that is, by drilling a new place for the hinge in the facade and correspondingly fastening it to the side wall. But this is a topic for a separate conversation.

Now we turn to other methods of returning the torn loop to its rightful place. You can try to cover the holes from the screws or screws with PVA glue (from experience I can say that it is better to use PVA Joiner Moment) with added small sawdust. Get a medium viscosity composition. And with such a composition, close up the holes from the self-tapping screws or screws that fasten the loop to the chipboard. This option was chosen by my friend, although my opinion is that this option is not as reliable as the next option for restoring a torn loop.

I often use this option not only to restore the fastening of the hinge to the chipboard, but also to restore the fastening of the eccentric tie rod. On one of the orders, a client who tried to assemble cheap furniture on his own, for some reason decided that the holes were not the same size and drilled them through. We saved furniture dowels.

We drill the socket where the screws or screws holding the hinges were attached using an ordinary drill with a diameter of 8 mm. Drill so as not to drill through the hole. It is better to use the stop ring on the drill to limit the drilling depth of the hole. As a result of drilling, a hole with a depth of 10 to 12 mm and a diameter of 8 mm will be obtained. Now you can carefully drive a furniture dowel into this hole, on which approximately the depth of your hole is pre-marked. In order for the dowel to be fixed in the hole for sure, it is better to lubricate it ... The protruding part of the dowel must be cut evenly, for example, with a saw blade for iron. Excess glue is removed if it comes out. And if the loop is attached to self-tapping screws, then they can be tightened immediately after installing such plugs. If you need to drill holes for wineyou, it is better to wait a day. Although PVA Joiner quickly grasps, full strength still does not come immediately. I consider this option the most optimal of all.

But if this option did not suit you, then you can use a very tough option, this is drilling a hole through and through and pullinghinges with bolts of this type and suitable size.

And since arr on that side, where willthe caps of the bolts are visible, stick on the self-adhesive plugs.

I think that basically all the possible options for restoring the mountloops are reviewed and will help you with your problem.

And here is what my friend did as a result.

Any furniture was created for the convenience of a person, but over time it tends to break. Often this phenomenon manifests itself in the form of breakage of furniture hinges. The reasons can be different: from frequent moves to incorrect initial assembly of furniture.

Modern designer furniture for kitchen sets, cabinets, shelves is complemented by closing doors made of different materials, which are connected with hinges. Because of them, various types of breakdowns occur and, as a result, repairs will be required.

Causes of problems

  • The door fell off. So the loop could not stand. Reason: poor screwing in screws or screws.
  • Tore out the loops by the roots. The main reason is not correct calculation of the depth for the screws or the door is too heavy for this fastener. Frequent opening and closing of the furniture door.
  • Deformation of fasteners. The protective decorative coating has peeled off. Violation of furniture manufacturing technology. A crack or dent appears under the lacquered veneer. Incorrect drying of wood in the manufacture of furniture. Wear of movable joints. The furniture is skewed.
  • Manufacturing defects. Due to improper manufacturing of the connecting parts, as a result, defective fasteners are obtained, which, when screwed in, lead to frequent breakdowns.
  • Frequent disassembly. Unfortunately, with frequent disassembly and assembly of furniture, it leads to the fact that the old holes in the seats can no longer hold the fastening loops.
  • Loosening. Occurs from frequent opening and not carefully closing the doors. Adjust with screws. Do not twist, check if the cover fits snugly to the surface and there should be no movement. Otherwise, deformation will occur.
  • Incorrect seating of the furniture hinges leads to malfunctions.

How to repair a torn furniture hinge?

When furniture breaks down, any modern interior loses its appearance and, at first glance, new furniture instantly turns into old trash. There is a certain confusion in this situation. A noose torn out by the roots immediately catches the eye of even households or guests who come to the apartment. Repair furniture hinge , you can do it yourself at home. We will give advice on repairing torn furniture hinges.

  1. You can raise the loop higher or lower it and screw it on.
  2. If there is no longer anything to attach to, then do the following: fill all the torn off places with epoxy resin and put the fasteners in their original place. It has been proven that this method holds the loops for a long time. The resin should be completely dry.
  3. Cut out the place of the torn loop and replace with a new insert. Then adjust the color and attach a new loop.
  4. Attach a new block to the surface of the damaged door using self-tapping screws and screw on new hinges. If you don't want to make other holes, then put the bars on glue and place them under a press. Press time up to 10 hours, this is a kind of reinsurance against a new breakdown.

If there are only holes left on the surface of the furniture, then you can drive in the wedges and tighten with special screws, but it is advisable to pick them up a little longer than the previous screws.

How to replace it correctly with your own hands

Correct replacement of a broken furniture hinge consists of the following steps:

  • You can replace it if you call the master, but in order to save money, the furniture hinge can be replaced with your own hands. Holes from screws or self-tapping screws remain in place of the old hinge. Just take a special glue with the addition of fine sawdust and a viscous composition to cover the holes. Wait a couple of hours and screw the screws back in. But we warn you right away, this method is not durable if you screw it in without drying the glue.
  • Covers with the same glue with furniture sawdust, then let it dry. We screw in the loops to the old place, only we choose the depth 3 millimeters deeper, but leave the same diameter. It has been proven more than once and the fasteners last for a long time.
  • It is required to shift the bases of the chant and screw it on. Tip: replace old fasteners with new ones, because over time the hinge can deform.
  • If, with frequent breakdowns, the place for fasteners has turned into a sieve, then you can make a small lining of any material and screw the hinges again. Tighten to the end with a special screwdriver.

With the knowledge gained, it is safe to say that if any of the above breakdowns occur, then you can handle it yourself.

Very often, when the cabinet breaks down, the hinges break off, and it is difficult to fix them if you do not know the instructions. In this article, you will learn how to fix them easily and quickly.

How to fix torn cabinet doors

It should be noted right away that a number of defects can be corrected without any problems. For example, frequent situations are squeaking when opening / closing. And all the doors creak, regardless of the material. The most unpleasant sounds are made by metal. In this case, the sound is not made by the cabinet, but by the hinges, so they must be repaired. You will need:

  • butter. A special oil for the loops is desirable, the use of a machine is allowed;
  • syringe. There are no special requirements.

However, it should be borne in mind that there are some cases when it is much more profitable to replace a hinge or door.

IMPORTANT FACT. As stated above, special hinge oil is a more necessary option, as it is sold in a special spray can.

The door repair instructions are pretty simple. It is enough just to grease the loop well, during this process it is advisable to open and close it once or twice so that the oil is better absorbed. However, if you have machine oil, this is a little more difficult. You will need a syringe. Almost any will do, including diabetic. It is necessary to do all the same steps. Use only a few drops, otherwise the excess will end up on the bottom of the cabinet.

What to do if vomited with loops

It often happens that the loops come off, and they cannot be attached back, since the thread is too large and the screws do not hold.

For repairs you will need:

  1. At the very beginning, you need to increase the holes for the screws with an 8-mm drill. Importantly, this is allowed if you use other wood, otherwise use the instructions below. The most important thing is to know when to stop, not to drill through. However, it should be borne in mind that the drilling depth must exceed 10 mm.
  2. Take the 8mm dowels. They need to be hammered into the resulting holes, and before that, grease well with glue. Try to hammer to the end, but be careful, as the dowel pushes the plate from the back without any problems. If, as a result, you have protruding tips, then cut them off.
  3. Insert the screws into the dowels. The resulting design is many times more reliable than the previous one, because the screws are perfectly fastened to the dowels.
