There are more and more different options for gluing wood species on the modern market. Thus, the question arises - how to choose the right glue for wood? To accurately answer it, it is necessary, first of all, to determine the type of surfaces themselves that we will glue, and the purpose of the glue itself. In this article we will try to tell you how to properly glue wood to wood and other materials.

What kind of glue to glue the tree, which one is better?

There are various options for such glue:

- PVA glue for wood.

We all know a white, translucent adhesive that instantly "seizes" the surfaces of all types of materials to be glued. We have known him since school, when at the lessons of fine arts the teacher suggested using PVA.

Why PVA? It is one of the few "fast" adhesives that bond surfaces within twenty minutes. At the same time, if we are talking about gluing wood species, a completely similar glue hardens within a day. Accordingly, during the day the surfaces will be firmly glued, and it will be possible to create various types of loads.

- BF series.

There are various options for BF glue, each of them has its own number. The most popular are BF-2, BF-4, BF-6. If you reach a certain temperature - up to 80 degrees - you can speed up the "setting" up to fifteen minutes, and at normal room temperature, such a substance will firmly glue the tree in an hour.

- "moment" for a tree.

Glue "moment" is the most common brand of adhesive for various tasks related to construction. But we are wondering - which glue is best for wood? In accordance with our request, the manufacturers of "moment" produced a special substance, "moment" glue for wood. They can glue absolutely any surface.

If our task is to answer the question: what glue is better to glue a tree to a tree, then the “moment” answers both it and other questions related to gluing wood with any other material.

- heat-resistant adhesive.

It is most popular for those types of work, including carpentry, where the wood is exposed to various thermal effects. It does not collapse and does not stick surfaces even at high temperatures.

In this case, many are puzzled: with what glue to glue the tree if it will be subsequently exposed? The answer to this question is heat resistant adhesive. Unlike similar ones, it does not crumble and does not collapse itself, and does not destroy the structure of glued surfaces during thermal exposure.

- casein glue

This glue, unlike the previous one, has the purpose of waterproof glue. That is, the treated surfaces may be exposed to a large amount of moisture along with high temperatures. Among the known adhesives, this one is one of the most popular, it completely hardens within 20 hours, and the "seizure" occurs in 8 hours.

- joiner's glue

Joiner's glue is a solution designed for gluing and joining various objects made of wood or plywood, fiberboard. To create this glue, two types of compositions are used: mezdrovy and bone. The first type is considered to be the most effective, and the seams obtained as a result of its use become as strong and durable as possible. In this case, much depends on the observance of the technology for the preparation of glue.

When gluing surfaces with this solution, it must be applied to the main surface once, and to the end surfaces twice. After applying and gluing, the surfaces of the products to be glued should be firmly pressed against each other only after a few minutes, then the wood glue will not come out. In order for the seam to be the most even and durable, the thickness of the adhesive should not exceed 0.1 - 0.15 mm.

- epoxy adhesive

Epoxy glue has become very popular, because, in addition to wood, it can glue any known materials, can perfectly smooth the surface, and quickly fills any cavities. When the mixture dries, it simultaneously acquires the ability to insulate electricity and is immune to many chemically aggressive substances, it is not affected by fat, oils, surfactants.

Wood is the most common building material in Russia. Accordingly, the problem of its strong gluing is very relevant. The most common glue for wood is, of course, PVA, and it has been used for more than 50 years, and even now it is difficult to find a worthy alternative in construction.
The cheapest are the types of PVA glue for the office, and in construction they are only suitable for wallpapering. The second group is represented by PVA building adhesives, which are an additive in concrete and as a glue for decorative elements made of wood, paper and pile coatings. This is followed by a group of adhesives for household needs and it is suitable for simple carpentry work. This group is the most popular among consumers. The fourth group includes adhesives that are designed for carpentry work.
Most consumers prefer the old fashioned way to use variance. And this is not a mistake, although it brings with it a number of inconveniences. One of them is the issue of plasticization. The plasticized dispersion is afraid of the cold, and when it is plasticized by the consumer, as a rule, the quality is lower than the factory one. In the case of using ready-made frost-resistant PVA adhesives, this issue disappears.
It should be noted that the use of PVA dispersion for gluing does not give a true increase in the strength of wood gluing.
The fifth group is the types of PVA filled. These adhesives give good strength, but have special properties:
- the formation of white gluing seams, in place of the usual transparent ones;
- limited plasticity;
- dries in less time.
Such features should be taken into account while working with them.
Conventional PVA glue is made on the basis of an inexpensive homopolymer dispersion, which has limited water resistance. Moisture-resistant PVA wood glue is made on the basis of a copolymer dispersion, which is a little more expensive. More preferable for such purposes are versatate and acrylic PVA copolymers, which are practically not produced in Russia, and imported adhesives are not cheap. But here it is better not to save money, since the products for which these adhesives are designed clearly do not belong to cheap products, and the share of adhesives at cost is negligible.
PVA glue for wood is moisture resistant, in turn, it is not intended for gluing frames or sheathing of a wooden yacht, but the railing on the porch or an open terrace for PVA glue is quite suitable.
The seventh group are specialized adhesives. They are intended for the woodworking and furniture industry. You can hardly find them on store shelves. Such materials are intended for a narrow scope of special tasks that rarely occur in everyday life. Accordingly, the cost of such adhesives is quite high. If the wholesale price for general-purpose PVA glue ends at the bar of 1–1.5 dollars. US per kilogram, then in this class of adhesives, the countdown is just beginning from this mark.
From the point of view, in the class of general purpose adhesives, a rather high degree of gluing strength is achieved up to 35-40 kg per square centimeter, the strength of pine (for comparison) at break along the fibers is 20-25 kg per square centimeter.
A further increase in strength here does not make sense at all, in other words, the gap will simply occur along the “body” of the wood itself and will not depend on the strength of the glue. Another thing is that excellent strength is not dependent on external influences. Such influences include the temperature parameter and the degree of humidity. If we are talking about furniture that is used at room temperatures, then this factor is not so critical, but it should be taken into account.

Specialists working with wood know that the glue for this material must be reliable, durable, waterproof. Moreover, non-toxicity and versatility, as well as cost, play a big role. As you can see, there are many factors influencing the choice of the buyer. But, how can an ignorant person determine which glue to choose so that the acquisition meets all the requirements? Considering that the widest assortment is offered on the market today, it is difficult for a potential consumer to make the right choice the first time. Therefore, in order not to be mistaken with the purchase of wood glue, it is necessary to study the features of this material.

How to glue wood?

The retail network offers a wide variety of wood adhesives, which have individual characteristics and characteristic differences. The most popular types of wood adhesives:

  • PVA. Everyone is familiar with this composition from childhood. It perfectly glues wood surfaces, it takes 24 hours for final drying.
  • Adhesive compositions BF. The main advantage is high strength and durability. It takes no more than an hour to dry completely. If necessary, accelerate the solidification process, the mixture can be heated.
  • Water Resistant Wood Adhesive – t It contains one component that is suitable for bonding any type of wood.
  • Adhesive syndeticone composition. Before use, it is required to heat and wait for the swelling of the composition. The time of complete drying is at least a day.

  • The best glue for wood, which is widely used among the people - "Moment".
  • If necessary, use a moisture-resistant adhesive, epoxy is recommended, which exhibits high resistance to oily compounds.
  • The best material for wood splicing is Kleiberit. It is waterproof, reliably connects the layers of wood.
  • The composition based on polyurethane allows you to fill the structure of the tree, creating a complete product.
  • Casein glue is waterproof and resistant to heat.

Characteristics

One of the most common adhesive compositions is pva glue for wood. It is non-toxic, absolutely safe material with an unlimited shelf life. PVA is easily applied to the surface, securely connects the wood. This type of glue is used in furniture production. However, you need to know that PVA has low water resistance and moisture resistance. Therefore, it is not recommended to use it for gluing materials that are supposed to be used in damp rooms and outdoors.

For a reliable connection of wood on adhesives, compositions from the BF series are often used. These types of adhesives have frost resistance, elasticity. Thanks to these characteristics, BF adhesives can be used by hand for outdoor work, as well as for joining wood with metal, glass, and plastics. BF formulations should be applied to a previously cleaned and degreased surface. The initial layer, which acts as a primer, is left to dry for an hour. After that, a second layer is applied and the two halves of the product to be glued are connected, and left until completely dry.

Syndeticone glue is an excellent tool for bonding wood to other materials. This composition includes dry wood glue, slaked lime and sugar. It has high strength characteristics and resistance to atmospheric influences.

The adhesive composition based on polyurethane is very popular because it exhibits high resistance to temperature extremes, humidity, and is suitable for gluing hardwoods.

Today, more and more often, do-it-yourself woodworking professionals use wood glue. It is versatile, heat resistant, low temperature resistant. The composition of the mounting adhesive includes water-based acrylic, which indicates its safety for the environment.

Casein glue is moisture resistant. It is excellent for gluing wood, paper, fabrics, cardboard, leather. To obtain an adhesive composition, casein powder should be mixed with water and brought to a state of sour cream. To achieve the desired consistency, the composition must be mixed for an hour. After that, the mixture can be applied to the surfaces and, after a five minute exposure, they can be joined. When using casein glue for gluing wood products, you need to remember that this composition leaves stains on the surface. Therefore, you need to work with it very carefully.

Summing up, we see that there are many adhesive compositions for gluing wood. When choosing the right type of adhesive, you should consider water resistance, versatility, reliability and resistance to temperature extremes. If wood is to be spliced together, Clayberite is the best choice. In other cases, you can use PVA, BF, Moment.

Casein glue for wood used for gluing paper, cardboard, fabric and leather to wood. This is a very waterproof adhesive. To prepare the glue, you need to mix the powder (casein) with cold water until the consistency of sour cream, you need to mix the glue for about an hour. Then the glue is applied to both surfaces and allowed to dry for five minutes, after which they are connected. Glue sets in 6-8 hours, and dries completely in about 20. Using casein glue for wood it should be remembered that it leaves stains on the wood, therefore it must be applied carefully.

Glue paste.

One of the types of glue for wood. Making pasta is very easy. To do this, mix hot wood glue with sifted ash or chalk. Glue paste is used for priming and puttying wood materials, as well as for gluing wooden parts, when connected, gaps of more than 0.2 millimeters occur. Also, with the help of glue paste, wood is glued to metal, glass and stone.

And now we bring to your attention a video on how to properly glue wood. Happy viewing!
