Strengths for the job application form. Professional strengths. We look at the features of work

Everyone wants to have an interesting job in a company that they have known and dreamed of for a long time. But before you become an employee of such a company, you have to write a resume. If it interests the employer, the candidate will be invited for an interview. At this stage, it is important not to relax, but to prepare.

Before the interview, you have to go through the stage of selecting a resume.

First, look at the possible interview questions and consider the answers to them. One of the most popular is the description of strengths and weaknesses. Many candidates are often screened out at this stage. Therefore, it is worth paying special attention to it.

Introspection rules

Introspection is the best way to self-identify your positive and negative qualities. Set aside 1–2 hours for reflection. You need to be in complete silence and calm atmosphere at this time. It is important that the person is not distracted by anything. Writing all the qualities on a sheet of paper is the most effective solution. You must adhere to these rules:

  1. The list of pros and cons should be updated every 2-3 months.
  2. You need to be as sincere as possible.
  3. All your thoughts and ideas on this matter must be written down.
  4. It is important to keep your records in one place. It can be a diary, notebook, electronic document.
  5. Such a simple method will help determine the effectiveness of working on cons. It will give a powerful incentive for self-development.

Often employers are asked to name three negative qualities. But it is better to consider 7 strengths and 7 weaknesses in order to avoid an incident.

It is not always important to answer correctly. It is better to tell the truth than to voice banal, memorized and other people's phrases. After all, they may not correspond to the applicant's way of life and temperament. You always need to be yourself and not imitate ideals. After all, if the candidate lies, then in the process of work all his disadvantages will appear very quickly. And no one is safe from dismissal.

There are situations when it is better to change the place of work. Having correctly identified your strengths and weaknesses, you might think about which position is more suitable for a person. After all, there are people who are interested not only in the level of salaries, but also in the opportunity to maximize their full potential.

Assessment of deficiencies

Recognizing your weaknesses is not easy. Each has drawbacks that I don't want to talk about at all. But you need to be able to filter information and know what can really be mentioned in the interview, and what can be omitted.

It is necessary to evaluate what can be said about the shortcomings, and what is better to keep silent

Many people are surprised that a resume can indicate excess weight as a weakness. But for some professions, this is a really important factor. It determines endurance, the ability to work for a long time and continuously, to move quickly. Recruiters immediately write about this in the job description in order to weed out unsuitable candidates.

List of reported deficiencies:

  • excessive self-criticism;
  • perfectionism or excellent student syndrome;
  • excessive emotionality;
  • excessive straightforwardness;
  • reliability;
  • desire to please everyone;
  • difficult to learn;
  • poor understanding of technological innovations;
  • lack of professional education, work experience in the required field, etc.

An excellent solution is to indicate weaknesses that do not affect the efficiency and quality of work. You can mention the disadvantages that are insignificant for the position. It is important not to get carried away so as not to question your professional suitability. You need to be as sincere and honest as possible. And it is also important to emphasize your advantages, which overlap the disadvantages.

The second tip is to point out the weaknesses that you managed to change. When hiring, this will demonstrate that the candidate is ready to develop, become better. Time management skills can be reported. Especially if a person gets a job in a leadership position or one that implies multitasking. It is important to tell in detail how a person came to the ability to allocate time wisely. The main thing is to keep it short.

The third way is to present your shortcomings in an advantageous way. The main idea is to make them attractive to the employer and show that they do not interfere with work. It is useful for an analyst to go into too much detail, for a top manager to work for a result and do everything only at the highest level.

It happens that a candidate is not suitable for a position due to the lack of the most important quality. Organizers have problems with punctuality, account managers - with speech, and leaders - fear of public speaking. But there is no need to be afraid of this. It is better to just look for another job where the lack of such skills or qualities will not be critical.

Assessment of positive qualities

Sociability as a quality is necessary at work in a team

More often than not, it is the question of strengths that puts the candidate in an awkward position. He is afraid to overdo it and over-praise himself. Therefore, realistically assess your capabilities, analyze personal qualities and highlight only positive ones. Experts advise to divide skills into 3 groups:

  1. Knowledge-based skills. They are obtained through experience, training. These are computer skills, fluency in a foreign language, the ability to work with the necessary programs, etc.
  2. Mobile skills. They are transferred from one job to another. This is the ability to establish contact with any person, planning and analysis skills, the ability to quickly solve problems, the ability to work efficiently in stressful situations.
  3. Personal qualities. These are the unique properties of each person.

There is a secret trick - to first talk about the positive qualities that are directly related to the desired vacancy.

Examples of strengths to mention:

  • communicable;
  • purposeful;
  • easily trained;
  • reliable;
  • creative;
  • disciplined;
  • decisive;
  • multifaceted, etc.

Employers value the ability to tell only the truth. And this applies not only to the answers during the interview. Everyone needs an employee for whom lying is a taboo. Therefore, if such a feature exists, it is worth mentioning.

The main rule is to choose 3-5 qualities, no more. It is important that they meet the requirements specified in the job description. It is worth preparing counterarguments to support the listed strengths.

It should be remembered that the applicant's answers during the interview are a reflection of his professionalism. The recruiter is looking for the one who best suits his requirements. It is important for him to see that despite some shortcomings, a person is ready to work to eliminate them.

Linking strengths and weaknesses to the specifics of professions

Find out what qualities are needed for the position

Before compiling a personal list of positive and negative qualities, you need to carefully read your resume. It indicates what the ideal employee of the company should be like. Some recruiters even describe it in detail. From this it is worth highlighting the pluses and minuses for yourself.

Initially, you need to decide on the type of profession. There are 5 of them. They are associated with:

  • technique;
  • nature;
  • other people;
  • sign system;
  • in an artistic way.

What is suitable for type 1 will categorically not satisfy the requirements of another category. The rule works here - the weaknesses of one profession can be an advantage for the second.

If work is connected with communication, then stress resistance is important. The employee needs to be able to control his emotions and remain calm in any situation.

Talking about the positive aspects, you need to mention those that will create a competitive advantage over other job seekers. When applying for a job as an accountant or salesman in a small company, the employer is unlikely to pay attention to the candidate's leadership qualities. But in a company that is just entering the market and plans to actively develop, such an applicant will be very interesting.

Qualities not to be mentioned

There are things that are better not to talk about. If a potential employee reports that he is lazy, then he is unlikely to be hired. When the position is high, it is a bad decision to talk about your fear of taking responsibility. Such a person blames others for all failures. You can't rely on him, you can't trust anything.

Other things not to talk about:

  • commercialism and thoughts only about money, salary and promotion;
  • non-punctuality;
  • addiction to romance novels, gossip, intrigue, etc.

But people who are really serious about finding a job will definitely not mention it. After all, their goal is to find a worthy position with a good salary in a prestigious company.

Often, job seekers do not talk about bad habits that they cannot refuse. Subsequently, such employees arrange frequent smoke breaks. On holidays, they can drink during working hours and tune their colleagues to it. Often distracted by phone calls and gossip. Some are the initiators of conflicts.

Conclusion

The interview is not so scary if you prepare well for it. An important point is to create a list of strengths and weaknesses. This will help to avoid prolonged silence on the relevant question.

The main rule is to be honest and sincere. It must be remembered that everything secret becomes apparent. When talking about positive qualities, you should not over-praise yourself. When mentioning weaknesses, it is important not to make too bad an impression. All your weaknesses need to be reformulated into strengths. And then the likelihood of passing an interview will increase several times.

  1. You should not use only template phrases. Convey in your own words, in a restrained manner, personal traits. Exclusively for creative professions, humor and creativity can be applied to a resume.
  2. Do not specify more than 5 characteristics. Try to avoid vague, generalized phrases such as talented, responsible. It is better to choose an individual character trait that suits you and the desired position exactly.
  3. Draw the employer's attention to personality traits that are easy to test immediately, such as energetic, sociable.
  4. When characterizing negative qualities, one should not shirk the answer. It is better to name a few options and indicate how you work on them, how you improve your character.

We offer a practical method that will help you understand your strengths and weaknesses in order to always choose the best opportunities both in your career and in your personal life.

"Tell us about your strengths and weaknesses." With this offer at the interview, you can knock the most persistent job seeker off the track. The reason is that we usually don't ask ourselves such questions. But in vain!

Life constantly confronts us with a choice - to which goal to go, which path to choose. And it is important to answer as honestly as possible. Personally, I, unfortunately, have avoided books on this topic for a long time. There is probably some sensible business fiction that could help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. But I had to learn from my experience.

Even realizing that knowing my strengths and weaknesses is the key to the question “Who do I want to be,” I was in a stupor for some time.

How to determine what is "+" and what is "-" in you? What is the evaluation criterion? Is it better to look at the question from the perspective of the present or the desired future? Whose opinion should you be guided by?

Reading advice from HR experts didn't help me much either. They mainly listed the requirements for different positions, but not a way to identify strengths and weaknesses in themselves. .

Over time, I developed a methodology that proved to be effective and complemented well the HR recommendations. My method uses the basic idea of SWOT analysis (that is, it includes an assessment of oneself and the surrounding reality) and allows you to associate personal characteristics with the requirements for certain positions. This makes it easier to understand whether my qualities help or hinder the work I am striving for. And also to figure out whether this position will strengthen my life goals.

Below we will dwell on the assessment of ourselves and our personal qualities. And let's look at our characteristics, skills, abilities, as well as the requirements for a potential position through 3 prisms: energy, result, achievement of goals.

The first step is making a list of qualities

We make a list of our special features and / or requirements for the position.

For a list of your features use both honest introspection and conversation with people you come into contact with often and whose opinions you listen to. It is better if these are not only friends, but also people with whom you had contradictions, but they are in the past. It is important that you do not have a conflict now.

When I decided to leave my previous job, I asked several employees to tell (on fresh tracks) what they consider to be my characteristics. Even more, she insisted that they pay attention to both the positive aspects and what hinders my development and advancement.

It is important to think twice about whether you are ready to accept an opinion that does not coincide with yours.Take a break if necessary to digest the answers. Highlight from the responses received what several people noted, and feel free to add to the list of your personal characteristics.

For example, as a result of a survey of colleagues, I was pleased to hear that I was able to hear even the unspoken in a conversation. But it was very difficult to accept that I have a striving for quality at the expense of time. But I had to take it into account then in order to change it today (if I have enough motivation and strength).

Check your list after self-examination with the result of the survey. Anything that does not contradict people's opinions and has a strong impact on your life should also be added to the final list.

Withthe listjob requirements will have to work and analyze the requirements for vacancies. You can select 3-5 vacancies that you consider the best and for which you are ready to compete. In this case, both logic and emotions will work for you.

Most likely, these proposals will have intersection points. Add them to the list. But remember that some jobs may have unique characteristics.

Example

Let's say I am pursuing a career in finance. Most likely, for jobs in finance, the following will be common:

- experience in drawing up and monitoring the implementation of budgets;
- experience in managing individual business processes (sales, logistics, project implementation, etc.);
- reporting skills;
- attention to details.

However, individual job offers may have unexpected requirements. For example, sales experience or the requirement to maintain a separate accounting area (for companies with limited staff).

In total, our list can be replenished with 3-5 points of requirements for the position, for which we want to check our compatibility.

There is another option - to take one of the most attractive vacancies for you and analyze only those qualities that it provides.

Second step - analyze

In relation to each position from the list of qualities, you need to honestly answer 3 questions.

1. "E", energy: does it give me energy or take it away?
2. "P", result: does it bring me results or not?
3. "C", goal: does it make me closer to my goal or not?

Example one: sociability VS accounting

Suppose my goal is to achieve professionalism in the financial sector. In this regard, I consider my own character traits and the activities that I plan to engage in.

Personal feature, For example sociability,- it E +... When I communicate, it gives me energy. But this does not bring results either to me or to the company for which I work - R-... In addition, this character trait does not directly bring me closer to the goal - Ts-... But due to the energy that I receive during communication, I achieve success in working with numbers.

Conclusion: Being sociable will not directly help me in financial sphere, but if I use it as a hobby or for volunteering, it will give me the strength to work with numbers and formulas. That is, I can effectively use my character trait. And on how my hobby helps to accumulate energy for professional development, I can, on occasion, tell the recruiter.

Kind of activity, For example maintaining a separate accounting area at the enterprise, takes away a lot of energy from me - E-, at the same time does not develop my knowledge in the financial field - R- and it takes time that I can spend on developing professionalism - Ts-.

Conclusion: this type of activity is not suitable for professionalism in the financial sphere. There will be no achievements at all, it does not energize, this occupation does not bring me closer to the goal. You should refuse such an opportunity.

An important result! Without such an analysis, a person would probably be sure that sociability for a financier is not the best trait, unlike experience in accounting. And I would torment myself with an unloved business to the detriment of what is important and necessary.

Example two: difficult or easy?

Take another example of introspection for the same career goal - becoming a financial professional.

Personal featureattention to details... Discovery of details, invisible to others, drives me - it is E +. It helps my work with financial documents and I am showing good results - P +... The ability to see details and better analysis of documents allows me to be a valuable employee and brings me closer to the goal (for example, it allows me to get a promotion from a financial analyst to a senior analyst) - this is C +.

Conclusion: such a coincidence of conditions will help in career advancement for a long time. But what is given too easily, we often do not develop... And where there is no development, stagnation occurs. In this case, the absence of movement is tantamount to backward movement, that is, degradation (and it passes slowly and imperceptibly). That is why it is imperative to develop your strengths. To do this, you will have to consciously take yourself out of your comfort zone, for example, set yourself unrealistic goals or tight deadlines.

Kind of activitywork with non-financial documents... I like the ability to focus on documents, it energizes - E +. But I find it difficult to understand the related specifics (contracts, procurement documents, procedural issues) - R-. In general, the work expands my skills, and if I work on myself, I will become a more valuable (and expensive!) Specialist - C +.

Conclusion: this work gives energy, corresponds to the goal, but requires increased professionalism - a great option so as not to stop developing.

An important result! Following only the existing strengths without developing them can negatively affect your career. Whereas work that requires constant effort leads to success.

The third step is making a plan

Let's go back to our example - the goal of achieving professionalism in the financial sector. Now we can make a plan of action.

1. Find a suitable type of hobby for yourself in order to fulfill your need for communication. It can be a theater studio, a volunteer project (from art therapy courses in a children's hospital to assistance in animal shelters), membership in a tourist club, a society of Mafia lovers - there are a lot of options.

2. Do not consider vacancies where maintenance is required accounting area... In the future, this will not bring significant results, but it will take a lot of effort.

3. Its strong quality - attention to detail - must be actively involved and develop, that is, take on tasks with challenges.

4. Delve into a new area of work with non-financial documents... Draw up a training plan and, if necessary, attend courses and lectures on this topic.

As a result of an honest dialogue with ourselves, we received an assessment of personal qualities and their compatibility with the requirements of the position. Now it will be much easier to build a career and look for a hobby that will drive you. The thesis that it is necessary to develop strengths rather than compensate for weaknesses has become clearer.

There is no point in wasting time on something that does not give energy, results and does not make you closer to the goal. At the same time, even following innate talents, you need to consciously work with them.

For those who want more ...

For a more comprehensive approach, I suggest compiling your personal introspection matrix... An example of this can be found. Each matrix will have its own. It is not constant and will change throughout life.

As a result, you will understand:

- where the chosen path will lead,
if you take on the job (or leave it as it is) and focus on the best opportunities;
- why there is no point in wasting time on that that does not give energy, result and does not make it closer to the goal;
