Download word app on black background. When to use white text on dark backgrounds

Many sites use black text on light backgrounds because it is easy to read. However, white text on dark backgrounds can also have benefits. Knowing when to use one of the solutions will help make your projects better.

Reading or Scanning?

When it comes to text on a website, users read or scan (scan) the text. Reading is about putting emphasis on words to thoroughly comprehend a subject. Scanning involves reading words for a broader understanding of the subject. When you should use white text on a dark background depends on whether users are reading or scanning the text.

Paragraph text

The kind of text that users read are paragraphs. Because users read paragraphs, you should avoid using white text on dark backgrounds when rendering paragraphs. Forcing users to constantly look at white text can be detrimental to the eyes. This is because white stimulates all three types of color-sensitive visual receptors in the human eye. For the eyes, reading white text on a dark background is stressful.

White also reflects light at all wavelengths. Therefore, words and letters in a paragraph of text are compact and close to each other. When a sheet of paper reflects light, the light scatters and spreads to adjacent words and letters. The black background makes the shape of words and letters difficult to read. Compare black text, where it absorbs light around each word and letter, making them appear to stand out.

This is why the best choice for displaying paragraph text is black text on a light gray background. Not on a white background. Less light will be reflected behind the words, making it easier on the eyes. Black text works better because black is also the color that. Thus, black does not put a lot of strain on the eyes, as it absorbs the light that hits everyone.

However, if your site needs to use a dark background to display the body text - use a gray one. This will not strain the user's eyes because gray text is not as bright as white. It will reflect less light, making it easier to read. Keep in mind that if you are reading text in a dark room where no light is present, then white text on a black background is not that difficult to read. This is because the light is not reflected from it in a dark room.

Categories, titles and headings

There are times when white text on a dark background is appropriate. These moments are when the user scans the text with their eyes. Users usually scan titles, titles, and author. Using white text on a dark background for these types of text is an effective way to make them stand out to grab the user's attention. After all, white. This makes the text bright and distinguishable. You don't have to worry about eye strain as scanning these types of text does not require visual fixation. It's all just a quick look or check of a title, title or category.

Using white text on a dark background as a selection tool is a smart way to show important elements that users often miss. By applying this rule to your site, you will make the text easy to read without harming the eyes of your visitors.

The biggest fun (after shading, of course) is typing white letters on a black background. This is a very daring decision; besides, the text printed in this way attracts the attention of others as much as a black eye. Therefore, use this technique with caution.

When you print white on black, remember to create a black background first, and then white text. The black background is created as follows.

  1. Select the text box.

It is best to start with a text that is already prepared. At some point, you will end up with black text on a black background, so the text will not be visible. If you have a typed document, the completion of the procedure will be marked by turning it into white. (For information on highlighting text, see Chapter 6.)

  1. Select a team Format> Borders and Fills.

A dialog box will appear Borders and shading.

Make sure the tab Fill is in the foreground.

If not, click on the tab for that tab. Tab Fill appears in the foreground (see Figure 19.5).

  1. In the area of Fill choose black.

It is the fourth from the top square in the first column; in the field to the right of the color picker, you will see a message Black.

  1. Click on the button OK to part with the dialog box Borders and shading.

Now you can't see anything because you have black text on a black background. (Actually, if the text is highlighted, you will see a stunning sight: a large white block floating in the Black Sea. Don't be alarmed!)

Without deselecting the block, change the text color to white. To do this, use the button Font color on the formatting toolbar.

A drop-down palette appears.

  1. Select an element in the palette White.

(This is the last square of the palette, located at the bottom right. If you move the mouse pointer to it, a tooltip with the word White "pops up".) Click on this square to change the font color.

You should now deselect the selection. The text will become visible on the screen: white letters on a black background.

  • Word displays inverse text quite effectively on the screen, especially when it is highlighted. I bet you will never be able to "lose" such text, even in a very large document!
  • I do not recommend inverting large chunks of text. On many printer models, this text is printed "doesn't matter". This technique is best for highlighting headings and small pieces of text.
  • If you have problems printing inverse text, change the printer settings. In the dialog box Seal click on the button Parameters... In the area of a printer click on the button Properties... As a result, a dialog box will appear on the screen. Printer properties... Click on the tab label Graphics... In the area of Graphics mode check the box Dot graphics... Click on the button OK to close the dialog Printer properties.

Google Plus is shutting down

The Google Plus platform did not meet the expectations of the developers and will be completely removed on April 2, 2019. Together with it, the albums associated with it in Google Photos will disappear, authorization on sites with a Google Plus account will become inaccessible. Since February 4, the function of creating Google Plus profiles, channels and pages has become unavailable. If you have valuable content stored on your account, you can download a backup copy.
Most of the changes will affect bloggers who blog on Blogspot. Some G + widgets, G + comments, and Google + profile will no longer be available. This is stated in the notification in the Blogger admin area:
Following the announcement that the Google+ API will be discontinued in March 2019, there will be a number of changes to Blogger's Google+ integration on February 4th.
Google+ widgets. Blog designs will no longer support the +1 Button, Google+ Followers, and Google+ Icon widgets. All instances of these widgets will be removed from your blog.
+1 buttons. The +1 and G + buttons and the Post to Google+ links below blog posts and in the navigation bar will be removed.
Please note that if you are using a custom template that has Google+ features, it may need to be changed. Contact the person who provided you with this template for guidance.
Google+ Comments. Support for comments using Google+ will be discontinued, and default Blogger comments will be restored for all blogs using this feature. Unfortunately, comments posted via Google+ cannot be transferred to Blogger, so they will no longer appear on your blog.

Deleting Google Plus Comments

Unfortunately, comments that have been published in the system will be deleted irrevocably. You can only use the same tool https://takeout.google.com to tell Google + comments backup to your computer. Only a bootloader is not provided for it and you can restore comments only manually in a rather crooked way. It's good that I am on time in due time.

How to replace a Google profile with a Blogger profile

If you are blogging on Blogspot, then it is advisable now to switch from your Google Plus profile to the Blogger profile (for those who switched to Google Plus at the time). I recommend doing this right now to avoid unforeseen situations that may occur when deleting Google Plus accounts.

How to get your Blogger profile back

It's easy to do in your Blogger admin settings:
Settings -> User Settings -> User Profile - here select Blogger

Save your changes.

Confirm the transition to and enter your name or nickname.

Don't forget to upload an avatar on your Blogger profile.

How to remove a Google plus profile

If you decide to get rid of the G + profile once and for all, then go to your google plus page -> Settings -> scroll to the bottom of the page -> delete google plus account:

Today I will tell you what CSS3 is, what it is eaten with, where to look for it, how to properly prescribe it. I warn you, I will tell on my own, in a simplified way for the general public, as I see it + examples. So let's start from afar.
CSS is the style in which the properties of an object are written. This means that they are in all existing engines, if you cannot find them, then either you look not there, or they really are not ( crooked site). Where do they usually find it? Usually this is the site root, the name of the style.css file, although, in principle, the name is not as important as the .css extension, if the file with this extension is a style file.
See also my blog.

Where to find them?

The file path is assigned in the template between
" />
In Blogspot, it's a little different, there the styles are written right in the code, before the tag between
styles here

What do the styles look like?

Let's take an example:
#header (background: #fff; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", "Bitstream Charter", Times, serif; color: # 333;) .contacts ( position: absolute; top: 20px; right: 10px;)
contacts of the site's author

You can view the styles on any site, just in a browser. Now you can easily recognize them by reading what they look like in this article.
As you can see, styles are written in different ways. Styles that start with a pound sign correspond to a specific block id in, styles with a dot correspond to a specific block class. There is no other way, styles will not work. You can think of the names you want, the main thing is that they correspond to the written id and class in html. Style properties must be enclosed in brackets, followed by a colon ( look at the example above), the parameter is written and closed with a semicolon. It is allowed that in the last property at the end you can not put a semicolon, just a closing parenthesis.
It happens that CSS is written directly in a block, without outputting it to a separate file:
site header

CSS on Blogspot

Styles can be written differently, I will explain later because of what. Opening the code, we can see this (look at the styles carefully, and you will see the familiar blogging tags that define the styles):
As you can see, the style property .Header h1 spelled out separately above. How to understand and find a property? very simple, u font there is a parameter header.font, that's what we are looking for. Find it in the “Blog Title” property group for the “.header h1” style, inside the 2 “header.font” and “header.text.color” properties. So we are changing them. This is done for the browser to read the styles quickly, so it makes fewer requests. After all, the property header.text.color can be repeated somewhere else. Below is still header.shadow.offset.left and others, the meaning in them is the same, I will not repeat.
When they say to search in css (or styles), then we are looking in blogspot between tags
and usually before the tag
unless, of course, they are written directly in html (example above, styles in blocks). In other cms, everything is usually placed in a separate file with the .css extension

This latest article was written to provide you with up-to-date information on removing unwanted links from Blogspot templates as well as new Blogger themes. As you know, there were changes in the Blogger codes in 2018, so many actions with the code need to be done in a new way. Plus, new topics have appeared that are formed differently. In connection with these changes, we will analyze the topic of deleting links.
You can check your blog for external links on the services https://pr-cy.ru/link_extractor/ and https://seolik.ru/links. Remember to check not only the blog home page, but also the posts (posts) and pages (Page). A large number of external links open for indexing are discouraged.

How to remove links from the old default Blogger template

Using the Simple template as an example.
These templates provide the most inbound links. On my test blog, when I installed a simple theme, I checked it out and found 25 inbound links on the homepage, of which 14 were indexed.
I remind you that before making changes in the template code, make a backup!
  1. Remove Blogger Link - https://www.blogger.com/. This link is enclosed in the Attribution widget. In the Blog Design tab, it appears as an Attribution gadget and. To remove it, go to the "Theme" tab -> change HTML. By searching for widgets (list of widgets), find Attribution1 and delete all the code along with the footer section in which it is enclosed. This is what the collapsed code to remove looks like:

    And here's the complete code:

We save the changes and check the blog for Attribution.
  2. You've certainly seen the Wrench and Screwdriver icons on your blog for quick widget editing. Each such icon carries with it an external link to Blogger. Now they are closed with the nofollow tag, but you still need to get rid of them. You will edit the widgets in the Design tab.
Here is a partial list of links that are encrypted in the wrench icons (the blog ID will be yours)
    - HTML1 Widget: http://www.blogger.com/rearrange?blogID=1490203873741752013&widgetType=HTML&widgetId=HTML1&action=editWidget§ionId=header
    - HTML2 Widget http://www.blogger.com/rearrange?blogID=1490203873741752013&widgetType=HTML&widgetId=HTML2&action=editWidget§ionId=header
    - Blog archive: http://www.blogger.com/rearrange?blogID=1490203873741752013&widgetType=BlogArchive&widgetId=BlogArchive1&action=editWidget§ionId=main
    - Blog shortcuts: http://www.blogger.com/rearrange?blogID=1490203873741752013&widgetType=Label&widgetId=Label1&action=editWidget§ionId=main
    - Popular posts: http://www.blogger.com/rearrange?blogID=1490203873741752013&widgetType=PopularPosts&widgetId=PopularPosts2&action=editWidget§ionId=main
All of these links are easy to get rid of. Find the tag in your blog template ... It appears as many times as there are widgets on your blog. Remove all occurrences of the tag .
  3. Remove links to quick edit blog post ("Pencil" icon). Makes it easier to edit posts, but carries a threat as an external link of the form: https://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=1490203873741752013&postID=4979812525036427892&from=pencil
    How to delete:
Method 1. In the Design tab, edit the "Blog Posts" item and uncheck the "Show" Quick Edit "checkbox.
Method 2. find the tag in the blog template and remove it. Save your changes and check your blog for the icon and link.
  4. Remove Navbar. Search for widgets in the navbar1 blog html template and remove all code along with the section.

    Namely:

Now Navbar in the blog does not provide indexed external links, but I believe that this is an extra element that does not carry a functional load, and it is better to remove it.
  5. Remove external links to images. When you upload images to a blog post, a link is automatically embedded in them. To remove such links, you need to edit all blog posts. In the "View" mode and further to the "Link" icon. If the image does not contain an external link, then when you click on the photo in the post editor, the “Link” icon is not active (there is no icon highlighting).

  6. Remove the link to the blog author's profile. Remove the author of the blog below the post. To do this, find the code trueand replace true with false. It will turn out false
  7. Close the link from the widget “” from indexing with the nofollow tag. If you use the profile widget on your blog, use a quick widget search in the blog template to find the code for the Profile1 gadget. You need to edit the widget code, replacing rel = 'author' in two places with rel = 'nofollow' and add rel = 'nofollow' to two links. You should get something like the screenshot:

Made on the example of editing a Google Plus profile. As a reminder, Google Plus will be phased out on April 2, 2019. Accordingly, after this date, you will need to make other changes in the code of the "About me" widget.

  8. Checking for inbound links any blogspot post page that has comments. Find and delete the code in the blog template:

In the Blog settings, along the path Blog settings -> Other -> Site feed -> Allow blog feed, apply the following settings:

Remove external links from the new default Blogger template

Using the Notable theme as an example
  1. Remove Attribution (link below - Blogger Technologies)
Find Attribution1 in the widget search blog template (list of widgets) and delete the code along with the section similar to the old Blogger template (see above 1).
  2. Remove the link from the "Report Abuse" widget. This is the ReportAbuse1 widget. We find in the search by widgets:
The whole code looks like this:

  3. We check the blog post page with comments and remove links by analogy with the old blog templates (see above - point 8).
  4. Remove links from blog posts that are embedded in post pictures (see point 5).

How to create an image gallery You can also test my gallery at the end of this article and add your own links. It is welcomed 😉 Ivanova Natalya

What I don't like about Chrome is the flickering of a white background when drawing a page. As far as I understand, this happens at the engine level, and it cannot be changed at the user level, even if you change the colors in the OS. I think that at this point you need to throw a stone into the Chromium developers' garden. Why do they determine the color of the canvas on their own, and do not take it from the system settings of the OS? The same goes for Skype and a number of other "serious" applications.

Opera

The Opera is not so dense. All I could find was the Contrast Changer extension. Or a simpler version in the form of a bookmarklet.
As an alternative to Clearly, you can use the Instapaper online service and their bookmarklet.
Also recently, Stylish extension has appeared.
Choosing a dark theme. For example, Opera Simple Dark.

To change the color of the interface:
File> Options> General> User Interface options> Color Scheme: Black... To change the color of the paper (background), you need to change the colors in the OS.
For older versions of the office, I can't help you.

Another bonus of "white on black" for mobile devices is that such a combination consumes less energy(because it emits less light). How much less? Do not know. I suspect that it is quite noticeable with prolonged reading. It would be interesting to see the statistics.

Hygiene of vision

Contrast

As mentioned above, don't use too much contrast (max white on max black). Contrast ≠ readability. Light gray on dark gray feels more comfortable. What kind of shade of gray - select individually.

Contrast plays a role not only in the image on the display, but also with the surrounding world. That is, take the lighting in the room into account and try to avoid too strong a contrast between the lighting and the brightness of the display / colors. This is especially true for night owls. If you are already working in the dark, switch to dark color schemes - your eyes will be much less tired. The contrast between a dark and light theme in a dark room can differ 20 times or more!

Distance

Don't forget about the inverse square law. If you are used to leaning towards the monitor, then when reading, increase the font ( Ctrl +) and lean back at least 15cm. This will significantly reduce the amount of light emitted to the eyes. Of course, the monitor area is too large to consider it a point light source and apply this law to it. But as a simple one shows, when the ambient light is not too bright, leaning back from a distance of 55cm to 75cm, the illumination from the monitor decreases by 1.5 times (and even more in the dark). The recommended distance from the monitor is 50-70cm.

Breaks

Taking regular breaks from working in front of the monitor is more beneficial for vision than all of the above combined. But how can you remember to take regular breaks?

I absolutely loved the Workrave app. Configurable for different periods of time and pauses of different lengths (for example, 3 short pauses every 15 minutes, 1 long every hour). He knows how to block the system for a certain time without the possibility of cancellation, which is very motivating to get up from the workplace :) Has a lot of little convenience in the settings. For example, a few seconds before blocking, a warning pops up, and if you are too busy and now not before a pause, then you just continue to work - the application will notice activity (keyboard, mouse) and cancel the blocking. It also independently determines when you yourself are taking a break and resets its timer.

Exercises

I suspect that most readers are familiar with the symptoms of computer vision syndrome such as accommodation spasm (pseudomyopia, false myopia) or dry eye. There is enough information on the net how to prevent these disorders through various exercises and gymnastics for the eyes. The main thing is to do them regularly, at least several times a day. I want to separately note 2 types.

Human vision is designed in such a way that the normal state of the eyes (when the eye muscles are relaxed) is accommodation into the distance. Since the monitor is relatively close to the eyes under normal conditions, the ciliary muscle is constantly tense to keep the lens bulging for close focusing. This leads to fatigue and spasms of the ciliary muscle (pseudomyopia), and over time, permanent visual impairment. Alternate gazing into the distance and closer, compensates for this tension, for which it is imperative to tear yourself away from the monitor (which is well promoted by Workrave) and periodically exercise by the window for several minutes.

The second type is face palming.

face palming

Yes, that's it. So every time you react to an epicfail, you have the opportunity to stretch your eyes. This technique is also known as palming. There are many speculations and controversial personalities around this word to this day. Therefore, I will immediately make a reservation that I recommend this exercise. not as a method to improve vision, and as a method to relax the eyes. The darkness allows the photoreceptors to “rest”, and the warmth of the warmed-up hands dilates the vessels of the eyes and stimulates blood circulation. It will also moisten the eyes, because for some reason a person blinks at times less when working at the monitor. Well, given that the brain spends most of its energy on processing visual information, this is also a way to relax the gyrus a little.
(house) and without lighting (at night). Daylight was excluded because the result is highly dependent on many factors (eg weather) and has a large scatter in measurements.
Distance... For the far distance I took the length of my arm 75 cm. The near one - a slope ~ 20 cm forward closer to the monitor.
Display brightness... In conditions without illumination, I carried out measurements twice - with the maximum display brightness and, accordingly, the minimum.
Measurement results... I brought all the data into one table. For comparison, I used the ratio between the illumination in different conditions. As can be seen from the table, with “average” illumination, deviating backward, the illumination decreases by a factor of 1.5. And in the dark, if you use a dark scheme, then the illumination decreases 25 times.
Disclaimer! The results of the experiment do not claim the universality of the conclusions, since the experiment was done “on the knee”. But I dare to assume that similar results will be observed in many everyday situations.
