A person can sin in various ways: deed, word, thought, knowledge, ignorance, willingly and unwillingly.

We sin "Deed" when this deed is contrary to the commandment of God. If a person indulges in gluttony, drunkenness, delicacies, then he sins against the commandment of God: "Do not make yourself an idol and any likeness." Theft, robbery, murder and other similar acts are sins by deed.

Sin "Word", when this word is contrary to the will of God. For example, idle talk, words, songs are sins in words. The Lord Jesus Christ forbids these sins by saying: "For every idle word that people say, they will give an answer on the day of judgment" (Matthew 12, 36)... If we reproach our neighbor with words, reproach him, scold him or speak falsely about him behind his back, complain about him unfairly, slander him out of hatred, then we sin against the commandment of God: "Do not obey your friend your testimony is false"... These sins in word are more pernicious than many sins in deed and can stand side by side with homicide.

We sin By "thinking", if we have any desires that are contrary to love for our neighbor, when we act against the commandment of God: "Do not desire anything that belongs to your neighbor." Sins by thinking are just as grave as sins by deed and word, and are strictly forbidden by Holy Scripture.

Sins "Conducting"- those that we do, knowing that they are forbidden by the law of God, we do them according to our passions - out of pride, anger, laziness, and the like - and we justify ourselves with false arguments. Those who do this are worthy of the same judgment that the master pronounced against his wicked and lazy servant: “Crafty slave and lazy! You knew that I reap where I did not sow, and I gather where I did not scatter ... Throw the worthless servant into the outer darkness: there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth ”(Matthew 25: 26-30).

Sins "Ignorance" come from the weakness of human nature. It is very difficult to discern these sins in oneself and to protect oneself from them. "Who understands the Fall?" (Psalm 18:13)- says the prophet David, that is, whoever can see his faults, his ignorance. However, since these are also sins, it is possible to be kept from them; and therefore he adds a prayer: "Cleanse me from my secrets", that is, from sins, through weakness and ignorance, committed by me, which are either unknown to me, or which I do not remember, or which I do not even consider as sins.

Sin "By will"- means to sin knowingly, with intent and out of anger. The Apostle Paul says this about these sins: "If we, having received the knowledge of the truth, sin voluntarily, then there is no longer a sacrifice for sins." For those who apostate from Christ and who rebel against Him by will, it is impossible to receive forgiveness; as the same Apostle explains it, saying: “It is impossible, once enlightened and tasted the gift of heaven, and became partakers of the Holy Spirit, and tasted the good word of God and the powers of the future age, and fell away, to renew again by repentance; when they again crucify the Son of God in themselves and curse Him "(Heb. 6, 4. 5. 6). But what is impossible for men is possible for God: the special mercy of the Lord can touch the heart of the sinner and return him to the path of truth.

"Involuntary sin"- the one that a person does not foresee, creates it against the will and desire.

Of the great multitude of sins, the most important, grave sins are called "mortal"; for for an unrepentant sinner who stubbornly abides in them, after bodily death comes spiritual death, and with it eternal excommunication from God, death and endless torment.

There are seven deadly sins: pride, love of money, fornication, envy, gluttony, laziness and anger.

From these sins, as from seven mothers, all other sins are born. If you eradicate these seven sins, these seven mothers, then all their offspring, all other sins will be destroyed.
