Tile - a great choice for bathtubs
The space under the bathroom (areas from its sides to the floor surface) needs competent design. It is usually carried out with plastic panels or tiled. The choice of specific products depends on what material was used to decorate the bathroom and on the design features of the home.
Ceramic tiles are suitable for creating an unusual design in almost any bathroom. It has the following advantages:
- high decorative and practicality in operation;
- absolute hygiene, environmental cleanliness;
- ease of care;
- durability.
Tiles are allowed to be mounted in wooden houses (plastic panels for decorating bathrooms in such buildings are undesirable). Tiles are available in different colors and sizes. For bath lining it is recommended to choose products with average geometric parameters.
If you use large cladding elements, they will have to be cut. This increases the cost of the work.
Font decor can be done using ceramic mosaics. These small items are ideal for decorating small bathtubs and showers. True, they are not cheap. And it’s not easy to assemble a pattern from “microscopic” parts, and then fix them on the screen.
Plastic panels are significantly cheaper than tiles. But they are used only in bathrooms, the walls of which are lined with the same material. In other situations, it is better to tile the bathtub, creating the perfect interior in a hygienic room.
Drywall screen - easy to build and low cost
The basis for the tile is made of different materials. Most commonly used:
- tongue-and-groove plates;
- brick;
- moisture resistant plywood or gypsum plasterboard sheets (GKL).
The design of the screen without fail provides for a small opening - an inspection hatch. It allows, if necessary, to replace pipes under the bath.
The cheapest base for mounting tiles is obtained from gypsum board, which have increased resistance to moisture (green products). With their help, it is easy to make a lightweight, but sufficiently strong frame of any configuration, which is important if you need to venerate a font of unusual shape. Do-it-yourself drywall construction is done like this:
- On the floor and walls along the perimeter of the bath, marking is carried out flush with its sides.
- On all sides from which the installation of ceramic tiles is planned, a frame of wooden bars is being built. Their cross section is 4x4 cm.
- The resulting base is carefully leveled and dowels attached to the floor and wall surfaces.
- The cutting of moisture-resistant GCR is performed. Their dimensions are taken 20 mm less than the height of the bathtub (when installing sheets, they leave 10 mm gaps at the side of the font and floor).
- Drywall is fixed on a skeleton made with self-tapping screws. They are screwed in every 12-15 cm.
- At the intended site, an opening is cut under the plastic inspection hatch.
The joints between the GCR and the walls are glued with a serpentine tape. Seams around the perimeter of the frame and the left gaps are filled with sealant. The constructed screen is treated with a primer acrylic composition.
Other types of base for tiles - how to make?
Brick screens are rarely built. It is difficult to work with such material because of its heavy weight. But it is characterized by exceptional reliability and durability, characterized by the ability to retain heat.
To create such partitions, it is necessary to prepare a solution that consists of 6 parts of sand and 1 part of cement (grade M300 or M200 is taken). The products are laid on the open sides of the font.
The brick screen should be positioned so that the side of the bath protrudes above it by about 20 mm. These millimeters are needed for high-quality alignment of the resulting surface and reliable installation of tile on it.
Products of the upper row must be attached to the side of the bath. For these purposes, tile glue is used. An antifungal compound is applied to the finished partition, primed, plastered. If, after such processing, small vertical differences and defects remain, they are smoothed out during the facing of the structure.
Instead of brick, lighter silicate or gypsum tongue-and-groove plates are used to create the screen. It is convenient to work with products with a width of 8 cm. They allow you to build reliable structures that can withstand the weight of tiles without problems.
The disclosure of the described blocks is made with a hacksaw on a tree. Between themselves, the individual parts of the partition are connected by gypsum plaster or glue. The structure is attached to the walls with dowels and steel brackets.
Removable screen - DIY
If the home foreman does not want to build a stationary base for the installation of finishing material, he can try to make a dismountable panel. It is created using:
- oriented particle boards (OSB) - multi-layer products from thin chips (wood chips) glued together with a mixture consisting of boric acid, synthetic wax and resin;
- slats with a section of 2x4 cm;
- adjustable furniture legs.
A part is cut from the whole plate. The cut sheet should completely cover the side of the font. In height it is taken 50 mm smaller than the size of the bath. Then, the slats are filled on the OSB. Furniture legs are attached to them.
The screen is ready. Tile is glued onto it and put to the font, adjusting the location of the upper edge of the panel (it should be pushed as tightly as possible to the side of the bowl to receive water procedures).
Tile installation - all the details of the event
After the construction of the partition, they begin the final stage of work. Screen decoration is carried out according to a simple algorithm. First, they are determined with the type and layout of the tile. The bath sheathing is in most cases carried out by a tile which was used for a decor of walls of the sanitary-technical room.
An ideal cladding comes out when the height and width of the base made are multiples of the geometric dimensions of the ceramic products used. The calculation of the latter in this case is elementary. In other situations, it is necessary to cut the mounted material. Cut pieces of tile are recommended to be installed in rows located in the most inconspicuous places.
It is advisable to “hide” the horizontal line with a non-integral tile at the very bottom of the space under the bathroom. Then it is almost impossible to see.
The vertical row is made in one inconspicuous corner or in two at once. The first method is suitable for cases when the remaining gap is greater than the width of the whole tile, the second - if it is small enough.
Lining the font with your own hands is carried out in several stages. It’s easy to close the screen qualitatively using this algorithm:
- Glue for tile is divorced. Such formulations are sold as a dry powder. According to the manufacturer's instructions, the required amount of water is added to it. The resulting mixture is thoroughly mixed.
- The prepared composition is applied to a small area of \u200b\u200bthe screen and carefully distributed with a notched trowel. It does not make sense to lubricate the entire partition at once, since the fixing composition quickly hardens.
- Take the tile, apply it to the area treated with glue, press it into the surface.
- Similarly, the remaining ceramic elements are mounted.
After facing the entire screen, they wait 2-3 days. During this time, the finishing material tightly adheres to the base.
Grouting is in progress. The procedure is of great importance. It guarantees maximum tightness of the casing, and consequently, the durability of the latter. Some experts advise additionally processing the joints between the tiles with a silicone water-repellent composition.
Tiling in the bathrooms is a traditional decoration of this room. This is explained by a wide choice of colors, the ability to use imitation for a variety of materials, and the variety of styling and design styles allow you to create an original composition that pleases a person for a long time.
Therefore, facing the bathrooms with tiles is an integral part of the overall interior of the home to give it comfort and coziness.

- Water resistant. It should be one hundred percent.

Choosing tiles for a small room

After calculating the surface area that you will cover with the tile, and dividing it by the area of \u200b\u200bone tile, you can find out the amount of material required. Professionals usually charge 5% more to allow for tiles to be trimmed. If you plan to save money and lay the tiles yourself, then this percentage is desirable to increase to ten. The fact is that different batches of tiles may vary slightly in tone. And it will be very difficult to acquire the missing one or two so that they do not differ from the general color.
- Tile Adhesive. Typically, the packaging indicates its consumption. Therefore, knowing the surface area that you want to cover with tiles, you can easily calculate the amount of glue.
- Teeth spatula for applying glue to the walls. For non-professionals, a spatula is not very wide, not more than 200 mm, is best suited.
- Plastic crosses to adjust the width of the seams.
- For grouting after gluing tiles, you will need a special mixture and a rubber spatula.
- Grinder or tile cutter for cutting tiles.
- Roulette, level, pencil. dishes for mortar, rubber mallet.
- Do not forget to close the furniture and plumbing, which remains in the bathroom during the repair. Cellophane is suitable for its shelter.
Bathroom Finishing Sequence
So, all the consumables are purchased, we proceed to the preparation of the walls for gluing tiles. Tiles on the floor are glued after pasting the walls. Before preparing the solution, it is necessary to determine how smooth the walls are. This requires a level. There are two options for leveling the walls:

- Drywall coating. For the bathroom, you need to purchase a special moisture-proof drywall.
For a more attractive look, the topmost tile should not be trimmed and therefore some calculations should be performed so that the trimmed tile is at the bottom. To do this, take the tile height plus three millimeters for the seams and divide the height of the walls by this number. The size that remains in the remainder is the height of the bottom row. It must be separated on the wall by screwing a wooden or metal plank.
Tile gluing starts from the second row:
- The solution should be well mixed and uniform. To do this, add dry glue to the water, and not vice versa. Mix better with a mixer. To achieve the most correct concentration of the solution, it is enough to strictly adhere to the instructions written on the package of glue. It should be remembered that too thick a solution will fall off the wall, and a liquid solution will flow down it.
- The solution is applied with a notched trowel to the wall under several tiles simultaneously. Do not apply to tiles. Gently press the tile against the wall and, if necessary, tap it with a rubber mallet. The quality of the laying must be checked by the level in order to notice the displacements of the vertical and horizontal lines in time.
- All tiles must be separated from each other by plastic crosses. so that the seams are smooth and beautiful. Sometimes, to achieve a certain effect, designers recommend making the color of the seams contrasting with respect to the tile. And then their unevenness and different widths will be very noticeable.
- The bottom row is laid out after drying the tiles and removing the auxiliary strip.
- After the wall is completely covered with tiles, it is necessary to wipe the seams.
