Options for a fence made of rounded logs. Palisade made of logs and a wicker fence with your own hands. Suitable types and sizes of fence logs

A wooden fence always attracts with its texture and environmental friendliness. Usually country fences are built from industrial wood - a flat edged board of standard thickness, treated with antiseptics from decay. But often fences for summer cottages are similar to one another - flat boards painted green or blue. Therefore, everything that differs from the usual standard pleases with freshness and simplicity.

Modern wooden fence-blinds.

This modern wooden fence is essentially a simple variant of a louvered fence. Such a structure is practical both from the point of view of the durability of the fence - it is well ventilated, and from an aesthetic point of view - the fence does not look completely "deaf".

This picket fence design allows it to be used as a trellis for climbing garden plants, such as climbing roses.

To save money, the upper part of the fence can be made in the form of a one-sided picket fence. Also, this approach can be used to build a fence in height.

How to decorate a wooden fence.

Even a simple picket fence can be beautiful. For example, in this fence, an interesting combination of boards of various thicknesses in the fence is complemented by an unpretentious pattern, and the light paint of the fence harmonizes well with the flower pots installed on the fence.

Probably, many of us have already met a wooden wattle fence. But it is enough to tint the extreme boards in the fence - and it takes on a much neater look.

If it is impractically expensive to put such a carved around the entire perimeter of the site, then it is quite affordable to decorate the front garden with it near the entrance to the house.

Even a cheap temporary option for a fence to the country house can be beautiful. This wooden fence is made from used pallets and decorated with daisies made from plastic milk bottles and plastic caps.

Are you used to even rows of planks in the fence? It is enough to change the order a little and you will get a beautiful picket fence for the house.

Can an inexpensive fence to the country house be beautiful?
Yes, if you combine inexpensive wooden slats and chain-link mesh. The main value is the original idea of the owner.

Do you need a more capital fence that covers the site from uninvited glances? You can save money by using an unedged board cleared of bark for a country fence.

Or you can puff and make such a beautiful fence out of it.

Some people care about saving money, while others don't. Wood carving is not cheap.

But if earlier almost every owner owned woodcarving, then if you wish, you can also master this skill and create a simply fabulously beautiful fence to the dacha, as in these photos.

If a person pays more attention to the living beauty in his summer cottage, then he does not always need "". But each of us creates our own beauty in our own way - someone is a great gardener, and someone is a talented woodworker. Each cottage is different and beautiful in its own way.

How to make a decorative wooden fence from firewood.

In addition to the usual country fences, today we will get acquainted with the recently popular wood fences. Such wooden fences are often neat decorative firewood racks that can be located in different parts of your garden - near the gazebo, barbecue, near the house or near the fence. But unlike conventional firewood storage, these wooden fences have their own requirements. It is not enough just to carefully stack the firewood on top of each other.

Those who have stacked firewood know that the stability of a log is highly dependent on its height. Ordinary firewood is not necessarily the same length. And the result may upset you. A wooden fence made of firewood needs a rigid frame. However, like an ordinary good woodcutter. Firewood for the fence should be of the same type, the same length, and stacked very carefully. In order to create an interesting fence texture, use one type of firewood in one opening - either chopped firewood or round branches. You can see more useful ideas in the article.

For all its beauty, such a wooden fence is more of a decorative structure than a solid fence. Because firewood is not cleaned of bark, not treated with an antiseptic, not protected from atmospheric influences, the wood will quickly begin to age and deteriorate.
For gardeners with a practical approach, the best use for such a wooden fence is simply to store firewood in it. In the summer, thanks to good ventilation, damp firewood will dry out quickly, go into action in the winter, and in the summer you can already build a new fence. A wooden fence is good both from chopped firewood and from round chocks of various thicknesses. To create a fence from firewood, you can use modern gabions.

If you approach creatively, then the combination of wood and stone looks beautiful in the fence.

Usually, firewood in a fence is not fastened together in any way. But there is another version of a wooden fence, when the firewood in the fence is laid on the mortar like bricks. To do this, you can use both adobe and cement mortar. You can read more about this construction technology in the article.

If you like the idea of a wood fence made of firewood and would like to extend its lifespan, then there is much more to it than just stacking firewood nicely. Each chock in this fence should be stripped of bark, dried well and treated with an antiseptic or at least just drying oil. The sequence is important - it makes no sense to treat under-dried wood with an antiseptic, as it will rot even faster.

In the modern world, fortifications have lost their functional necessity. The good old log fence has been supplanted by cheaper alternatives. Practical landowners resort to cast concrete fences, slate, brick, or even a metal roofing profile.

But can any of these materials compare with the aesthetics of a log fence? A horizontal palisade or vertically stacked tree trunks are almost the only option for owners of plots decorated in ethnic style. In addition, the height and configuration of the fence depends only on your preferences. Let's take a closer look at the most beautiful, reliable and durable version of the fence of your own site.

Features of log fences

There are no perfect things in our world. So the log fence has a lot of advantages, balanced by a number of disadvantages. First, let's look at the strengths of such structures:

  1. decorative properties. In the age of glass and concrete, expressive wood texture and warm natural colors cannot but inspire.
  2. Quick installation. In four strong hands, the installation of a log fence is much faster than the installation of the same concrete fences. First of all, because there is no need to wait until the base of the supports hardens.
  3. Strength. Properly installed log structures resist wind and other natural forces perfectly. No wonder the ancient Kremlin was surrounded by palisades.
  4. Inaccessibility. Climbing over a palisade with pointed tops of logs is quite difficult. In addition, such a design is also impervious to idle glances from the outside.

Such fences also have weaknesses:

  1. Maintenance complexity. Wood without additional processing has a shorter service life than other building materials. Therefore, the protective coating and impregnation will have to be updated periodically.
  2. Price. The high price of logs as a building material also influenced their displacement by more affordable materials.
  3. combustibility. Yes, it is difficult to overcome a high log fence, but ill-wishers can always set fire to it. In addition, this is an additional danger in case of accidental fires.

In general, the advantages of log fences fully balance their shortcomings. Therefore, before starting the installation of such a fence, you should carefully weigh your own priorities and compare the design features with the operating conditions in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Log processing

Before starting construction, it is necessary to process the material to increase its resistance to various destructive factors. On the other hand, you can purchase material with all the necessary impregnations and coatings. Minimum log fence should be protected from insects and moisture.

The treatment of the part of the log immersed in the ground with hot bitumen or creosote will help prevent rotting. An alternative archaic option is charring with a fire or burner. For reliability, it is recommended to process the first 20 cm of the outer part of the log.

To increase the service life, it is better to impregnate the cylindering for the fence along the entire length with compounds that increase resistance to atmospheric phenomena and reduce the combustibility of wood.

When building a palisade, each log is traditionally sharpened at an angle of 30 to 45 degrees. To complete the task, any available ax will do. But this is more of a recommendation than a requirement of the technical process. With the same success, you can not process the upper part of the fence in any way.

As an additional protection and decorative element, a small two-sided slope from the roof is installed on the upper parts of the logs. In general, there are a lot of design options for the future fence, and some of them will require additional processing before installation. For example, choosing grooves in span supports for horizontal placement of logs.

Material selection

It is necessary to choose the most well-finished logs of the same thickness as possible. The closer their shape is to the cylinder, the neater and tighter the fence will be.

The preferred configuration depends on the type of future fence. For palisades, the use of logs with a diameter of 100-150 mm is justified. In general, this is the best option for other types of fences. It is better to calculate a suitable length with a margin of about 40 cm - you can always cut off the excess, but you can’t add it without losing strength.

It is necessary to choose exceptionally well-dried logs. Otherwise, drying trunks will decrease in volume, creating gaps in the fence.

The required number of logs is easy to calculate by dividing the length of the proposed fence by their diameter. A few spare logs will also come in handy here. Because it is always better if they remain unused than if they are not available in case of need.

Mounting

After purchasing the required number of logs and processing them, you can proceed to the construction of the fence. The process starts with a trench. Along the entire length of the future fence, it is necessary to dig a ditch, a third of the length of the installed fence elements, but not less than 50 cm deep. Then its bottom is covered with a layer of compacted rubble 20 to 30 cm thick.

Without a reinforcing "pillow", the fence will sink deeper into the ground under its own weight and, as a result, its integrity will be compromised. Massive fences are installed on a strip concrete foundation.

Prepared logs are placed in the finished recess, several pieces at a time. The base of the span is covered with earth, followed by a dense compaction. To increase the strength, the rammed earth can be moistened with water.

In the process of installing the fence, in any case, you will need to wield a hammer or even a sledgehammer. In order for the metal tool not to damage the wood, special softening plastic pads are used. You can find similar accessories in the nearest hardware store.

When constructing a fence from horizontally located logs, one should start with the supporting parts of the spans. Their location is pre-marked. At the installation site, sleeves are concreted from steel pipes of suitable diameter, into which the supports are then placed.

At all times they were famous for their popularity. This was largely due to its relatively inexpensive price and ease of installation. But today the situation has changed a little, and now not just fences are made of wood, but real masterpieces.

Let's consider everything in detail.

Making a wooden fence on your own. Step-by-step procedure

The construction of a wooden fence can be divided into several stages, namely:

  1. Installation of support pillars;
  2. Installation of crossbars;
  3. Sheathing of the installed frame.

Each stage in the construction must be completed in full.

Installation of support poles

The installation of support pillars is carried out by backfilling. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

It's important to know! Sand with crushed stone will lie down more densely if the mixture is wetted with water.

Installation of transverse logs

Transverse logs, which are made of wood, are best installed using brackets.

The installation algorithm is as follows:

It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the distance between the transverse lags can be reduced. However, in this case, the design may reduce its strength. The support itself must necessarily be at least 10 centimeters higher than the skin, and the bottom must be at a distance from the ground at a distance of no more than 15 centimeters.

Sheathing of the installed frame

Before you start installing the mounting boards themselves, you need to remember that there are several ways.

In one of the ways, the picket fence is installed on the logs before the latter are mounted in the supports, namely:

If we talk about the second method of installation, then it implies the direct installation of each board separately. In this case, it is necessary to prepare for a long and laborious process. After each installed board, it is necessary to measure the distance between them (if you need clearance between the boards) and check for a clear vertical.

It is worth noting that any of the methods is popular with owners of private and country houses, so it is impossible to say which one is better. Everyone chooses an option for themselves depending on the choice of wooden fence design.

What can be processed and painted a wooden fence

It must be understood that the installed wooden fence takes on a variable climate in all seasons. For this reason, it is mandatory necessary.

Important to remember! Before installation, all metal components of the fence must be primed and painted.

Do not forget that ultraviolet solar radiation is harmful to a wooden fence for the reason that as a result of their exposure, internal moisture is lost from wood, thereby it loses its bearing capacity and appearance itself.

Such impregnation must be processed several times on a primer with the possibility of deep penetration. After that, you can use moisture-resistant paint and varnish to give the wooden fence an attractive look.

The price of pleasure

If we talk about the cost of the necessary building materials, the average price is indicated in the table:

Name of building material Volume Cost price
Board 1 m 3 About 3 thousand rubles
Cement 1 kg About 10 rubles
antiseptic 10 l. About 2 thousand rubles
self-tapping screws 500 pcs. 300 - 400 rubles
dye 3 l. About 400 rubles
Metallic profile 1 meter About 130 rubles
grinding wheel 1 PC. About 50 rubles
Edged board 1 m 3 About 4 thousand rubles

Design options

To date, there is still no such material besides wood, which was read as malleable for the implementation of various design solutions (while wood is very affordable in price range).

And so this fence has an internal view. No one will say that the view has become worse.

In this version of the design solution, attention was paid to every little thing. You can see how the contours themselves are worked out, and the corners are smoothed out in full. In the photo you can see the sliding gate from the same courtyard.

Agree, few of us know what techniques this or that designer uses to realize his fantasies. But they use: firing, create the effect of antiquity, successfully combine wood with various metal forged elements, and even tritely grind wood and paint it in various shades.

How do you feel about brutal style? Agree, the view is simply impressive.

To implement such a design solution, you only need a jigsaw, a grinder and woodworking skills. If you have the tools and desire, you can achieve the effect of shabby wood.

And who how to relate to puzzles? If you wish, you can initially draw a drawing on the board, and then cut it out according to the template. It is worth paying attention to the fact that this work is considered jewelry, since each board has its own clear size and bend.

At the same time, the most difficult process in the construction of such a wooden fence is its installation (not everyone is able to make such an arrangement).

For the construction, first of all, it is necessary to carefully consider the selection of the board. In no case should it be allowed that in any place of the board there is a different thickness or width. In this version, a distinctive feature is its affordable price, but this is offset by the enormous work that is necessary to create such a creation.

Despite the fact that a board up to 1.5 centimeters thick is not very suitable for fences, it can be used to create an excellent fence in the form of a lattice. Agree, the view is no worse than the previous options. And if you also decorate it with green spaces that will braid it, the view will be gorgeous.

Over the past few years, unedged board has increased in price by more than 15-20%, but this does not prevent it from staying in a low price range. At the same time, it is often used in the construction of a wooden fence in this style.

As you can see, this example clearly shows one of the options for design solutions when working with a non-edged board. If desired, you can achieve any exclusive solution.

And how do you like the design solution in the style of blinds? Agree, the view is just a bomb.

A selection of wooden fences

Beautiful wooden fences

With a little woodworking skills, you can create a beautiful fence in a short time.

This embodiment is popular with many owners of private houses, since its creation does not take much time and effort. Agree that the view is very attractive.

Standard fencing, which is suitable for both private houses and suburban areas. It does not require any special skills and abilities, but at the same time it has a beautiful appearance.

carved fences

To create carved fences with your own hands, you need to have wood carving skills.

It can take more than 3 months to create such a fence, since every little thing plays a big role. But it's worth it. This type of fence is suitable for any interior.

What about this cutting option? Surely, many people dream of such a fence, because it can not only emphasize the individual style, but also create the illusion of antiquity.

Small fences made of wood can emphasize the peculiarity of a particular plant, complement the interior of a personal plot.

If desired, you can create any decorative fence of one color or another. This does not require any skills and abilities.

Antique wood fences

Many people dream of creating a small fairy tale from their site and completely immersing themselves in antiquity.

This version of the effect of antiquity is great for areas where wooden houses are located. In combination with such a fence, you can create a real fairy tale for yourself.

And if you add a little decor in the form of a thick rope? The view is simply spectacular. Surely the neighbors will come to the owner of such a fence with admiration.

Fences from a professional flooring under a tree

If for some reason there is no desire to work with wood, you can install a fence made of corrugated board. Thus, you can not only increase the service life, but also create the illusion of a wooden fence.

If desired, you can use corrugated board in light colors under the tree, which is perfect for any interior. The service life of such a fence is over 25 years.

Another option is to use corrugated board in darker tones, which allows you to create the illusion of varnished wood. Great for wooden houses, or buildings sheathed in plastic wood.

For a private house

Depending on the wishes of the owner of a private house, the fence itself can be made in any style.

High fences have always been popular with owners of private houses. Thanks to them, you can hide everything that happens on the site from prying eyes, make the fence beautiful and exclusive.

Another option is to install a fence with small gaps. This type of fencing is perfect for any private home, regardless of its size and style.

From a professional sheet under a tree

As a rule, the installation of this type of fence at its price is available to any resident of our country. Such fences are great for installation anywhere, regardless of whether it is a cottage or your own private home.

In this photo you can see that the profiled sheet can combine a combination of decorative stone and the tree itself. Looks great and has a long service life.

For those who love minimalism, the option of creating a fence from a profiled sheet under a tree is perfect. This variety belongs to the classical style and is perfect both for fulfilling a direct duty - protecting the site, and as a good element of decor.

Made of brick and wood

When creating a fence, brick and wood are combined just great. Designers often try to combine them when creating interiors in the room itself and outside it.

The fence is made in a classic style using ordinary bricks and boards. Thanks to the successfully selected combination of color palette, such a fence looks not only rich, but also very attractive.

This composition combines the curly elements of a wooden fence with a brick one. A well-chosen color palette allows you to use it in any meta.

From stone and wood

This combination of building materials is in most cases used in country houses and cottages.

It will be very difficult to recreate such a fence on your own, and you need not only to be able to handle this material, but also to know the intricacies of mixing a special solution. But you must admit that such fences can surprise even the most captious critic with their beauty.

Wooden fences combined with decorative stone create the illusion of an ancient fortress. Often used for installation in country cottages or on the territory of private firms.

Wood patterns on the fence

Now in the world of wooden fences, a trend towards the use of additional patterns has begun to appear. They allow you to create something special and unique of its kind from a simple fence.

As you can see, such a pattern is very difficult to make with your own hands, unless a person has sufficient skills in working with woodcarving.

You can order a Chinese-style composition from wood carving specialists, as shown in the photo. This option is considered quite common in our country.

Original wooden fences

Surely every owner of his site would like to install the original fence. But what are they?

Such an original design of wooden fences in our country is not common. This is largely due to expensive pleasure (the initial cost can be from 40-50 thousand rubles).

Such a design solution allows not only to make your neighbors look at the fence with envy, but also makes the site very rich and individual.

Wooden fences horizontal

When installing fences, many of our compatriots often ask themselves the question - which is better vertical or horizontal? In fact, the difference here is only in taste.

Speaking about such a vertical fence, we can say with confidence that everyone can make it on their own, while spending a short period of time and money. The classic style is suitable for fencing any area.

The photo shows that the vertical fence is made using a complex design feature. It is very difficult to do this at home, and if you wish, you will have to seek help from specialists. But it's worth it.

Forging with a tree in the fence

At all times, they gave the fence strength and attractiveness. However, due to its considerable price, it is not very popular.

A wooden fence using forged metal spokes in the photo makes it original in its own way. Gives the site style and beauty. Moreover, forged elements make the design of the fence very rigid, which significantly increases the service life.

This option of combining wood, brick and, in fact, forged elements, makes the fence almost lifelong. It is not difficult climatic conditions, it is difficult to damage it, and most importantly - it is beautiful and stylish.

picket fences

Most of our citizens make picket fences. With this material you can make a very good fence. Just look at these photos.

Of course, if this fence is painted, and then varnished, it will turn out quite well, but even so it is quite attractive. What is characteristic - it can be done in the shortest possible time (the period of its construction is no more than 1 - 2 days).

In the presence of wild imagination and great desire of the owner of the site, you can give such a magnificent designer fence that will never cease to delight the eyes of everyone around.

wooden fence ladder

A ladder fence is not uncommon in everyday life among owners of private houses. Firstly, this variety allows you to save on the board, since small gaps can reduce the amount of material, and secondly, it turns out very well in the end.

The photo shows a ladder fence, which is still sheathed with corrugated board from the inside. Thanks to this, it looks very impressive from the outside, while the fence looks very neat inside the site.

This type of ladder is in most cases installed in suburban private houses. The small gaps between the boards allow you to see the beautiful green spaces that can be planted behind the fence.

How to make a fence inexpensively

The video below shows how to make a cheap wooden fence.

A fence for a wooden house can have many options. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Installing a fence is a time-consuming project, you will need the instructions that you will learn about in this article.

Content of this article:

Types of fences

There are many fences that can have one or more functions to choose from, whether you want more privacy on your property, block out cold winds, or hide the street. Consider your main goal: organizing your own backyard space, isolating your neighbors, or organizing a dog's life.

Advice

The difficult part of the installation is choosing the right design so that it fulfills its intended function and matches the landscape. Take the time to look at the types of fencing in your area to get ideas. Photos in design magazines will also broaden your horizons for choosing the right fence.

Fence

Many people think of a fence as defining the boundary of a property and protecting the homeowner's privacy. While a fence can serve these functions, the more common reason people choose a picket fence is to improve the beauty of the yard. A fencing expert is a landscape designer, not a home security contractor.

Picket fence is often used in combination with flowers, shrubs or vines.. Made in white, it will look beautiful with different flower combinations. The nature of this type of fence is to give your home an unassuming rustic feel that will be welcoming to neighbors. Many homeowners also find picket fence to work well with stone walls.

fence on poles

Perhaps the simplest fence is on poles and slats. The pillars are connected by one, two or three horizontal rails. Like the picket fence, poles with slats perform mainly a decorative task, but unlike the former, they have a much more open space.

Thus, the search for a fence to decorate a garden or a certain landscape area can be stopped at this type of fence. But if you need a decorative fence that still offers some degree of privacy and privacy, then a picket fence is the way to go.

How to choose?

There are many reasons for building a fence, all of which are important to property owners. Those who have dogs often do not have enough time to properly look after them. So, what other reasons for erecting a fence do we usually have:

  • Safety of children, pets outdoors.
  • Privacy while outdoors.
  • Improving the overall look of your home.
  • Blocking noise from a busy street.
  • Need a clear separation from neighbors.

With the right choice of fence, you will get your own little world, which will form the atmosphere inside, as well as order and certain boundaries.

Simply put, with the right fence, you will build a wall around your property that will make it a fortress - in one sense or another of the concept.

But not all railings work for wood architectural style. The utilitarian look of the chain-link mesh will downgrade the status of a charming little cottage. Likewise, a modest picket fence would look out of place around an industrial-style townhouse.

There are too many fence styles, so it's hard to list them all in one place. But some trends and classic designs definitely deserve our attention.

Here are some examples to spark your imagination.

When privacy is needed

Protective - this is the main type of fencing in the suburbs, which is suitable for almost any architectural style. They provide full or partial privacy and are available in heights up to 3 meters in some areas.

This type is suitable for a backyard but will not necessarily be the best idea for the front of your property. If you need to block all the view from the street, which, however, depends on where you live.

There is an interesting artistic twist in fencing design that is taking off. Other than installing a traditional wood or vinyl panel fence, there are other things to consider. For example, horizontal slats, carved panels, marbled glass inserts that refract sunlight, make it sparkle.

When you need aesthetics

Chain link fences can keep even a determined guard dog at bay, and children can play safely within the sturdy structure.

It is not surprising, but the netting looks most aesthetically pleasing when it is complemented by cultivated plants. For a pleasing yard to look at, we recommend putting flowering vines on the chain link.. Suitable for example:

  • clematis;
  • alpine roses;
  • wisteria;
  • moon flowers.

All of them can turn a simple fence into something amazing.

Since the material that makes up the mesh fence is strong enough, the homeowner does not have to worry about vines weakening it. The big draw here is the privacy and shadow that a simple grid design lacks.

When you need charm

The character of traditionally short open picket fences has a casual and even rustic feel to it, so the house's wooden architectural style will complement it. A vernacular tiled house looks especially pretty with a picket fence spanning the edge of the front yard.

If you have a garden, a picket fence will create a charming border around any plants and keep them safe.

When elegance is needed

The most spectacular style is wrought iron hedges. Some of them are high, others are short, and others decorate only the tops of the wooden fence, edging its perimeter. This style serves two main purposes: it protects property and it looks amazing.

Almost any wrought-iron fence is suitable for traditional-style houses. However, keep in mind that for a modern design property, you will need a more modern wrought iron fence without complicated lines and swirls.

Advice

If you have an unattractive but functional fence, you can make it better by adding decorative touches or covering it with wrought iron vines.

8 types of fences for the house

Another thing to consider when designing fences is the wealth of materials available. The most popular types of fences for wooden houses are as follows:

From a tree, cedar is best suited. It has a beautiful, natural look, the oils in the wood repel insect infestation, and it is resistant to rot. For a maintenance-free and attractive solution, consider aluminum or vinyl fencing. It can be made to look like any material, even natural wood, although colors will be limited.

White is pretty much all you need. Make sure you get high quality materials, as rust and other damage can come at a cost if you try to cut corners by buying cuttable materials.

Advice

Consider your budget when deciding which fence to install. Installation cost depends on the material. To choose the best option, here are the most popular materials along with their advantages and disadvantages.

Aluminum is one of the simplest, most convenient types of fencing.

Minuses:

  • difficult to install, you will have to involve a professional;
  • prone to damage though depending on the quality.

Maintenance for it will only be required during installation, or when you decide to paint it. However, it is not as strong as you might think, it is not recommended for areas with a harsh climate.

Wood

It gives homeowners the height they need, has some of the prettiest designs on the market, and is best suited to a wood façade. The tree also gives a warm, welcoming look without requiring a high investment.

However, you must remember that the height and size of your fence will significantly affect the price. The more lumber needed, the more expensive the project will be. Also, like all fences, it will take time to install. Therefore, a low fence will be clearly cheaper than a larger one.

Pros:

  • stable material, has the lowest purchase price, installation;
  • easy to install, repair;
  • comes in all shapes and sizes;
  • you can create your own configuration as wood is a versatile material;
  • the tree can be painted to create an updated overall look.

Minuses

  • require regular maintenance;
  • despite the fact that it is processed, the wood eventually crumbles;
  • Fasteners can loosen over time as wood contracts and expands with changing weather.

However, you can extend the life of your wood fence by applying additional treatments, including applying a sealant.

The positive side of wood installations is that they can last the lifetime of your home. Like hardwood floors, the quality of a wood installation will depend on the type of wood you are using.

PVC

The cheapest way to make a fence is to use PVC. It is used instead of wooden boards and picket fence, although it is less durable, it can serve its purpose. The PVC poles go on top of the wood poles to add stability, but also to cut down on material costs by using less wood.

Sometimes the PVC is attached with glue to the cross rods, sometimes they are attached with screws. This type of fence has different heights and colors. Due to the completely plastic canvas, such a fence will be very resistant to natural phenomena and can last for years.

wrought iron

When you see a hedge with intricate patterns at the top, it's most likely a wrought iron installation. Although wrought iron looks quite stylish and beautiful, it requires constant maintenance. If you want to keep this beauty, then wrought iron fences need to be sanded and repainted every two to three years.

Wrought iron is unpopular with conservative homeowners. In addition, wrought iron fences are made to order and therefore will not be cheap.

Vinyl

Manufacturers claim that vinyl fencing is up to five times stronger and four times more flexible than wood.

Vinyl fencing is maintenance free and paint resistant, making graffiti or any other unwanted stains easy to clean. All you need is a hose and soap to make your fence look like new again.

Pros:

  • rarely warps, no cracks from exposure to climatic conditions;
  • non-staining, does not require maintenance;
  • Besides mimicking almost any other material, vinyl fencing is available in an endless array of designs and colors;
  • lightweight and extremely durable.

Minuses:

  • like any plastic, vinyl becomes brittle over time;
  • may crack or break under too much pressure due to its hollow structure.

Installing vinyl fencing can have a higher upfront cost, but given the low maintenance and long life span, vinyl fencing will end up being cheaper than many other types of fencing.

Rabitz

Putting up a chain link fence won't add much privacy to your home, but it will do the other basic functions of a fence quite well. Homeowners will be happy to know that they are cheap, durable and need very little maintenance (as do many other options).

Pros:

  • practically does not demand service;
  • incredibly strong, durable;
  • rarely warps or cracks;
  • budget, easy to install;
  • provides security.

Minuses:

  • has a utilitarian look;
  • not ideal for privacy. However, solutions are available.

Often, homeowners add large amounts of shrubs, flowers, vines, or even mount rattan, bamboo, or other wickerwork into the netting. These actions will add some privacy to cut down on neighbors' views a bit.

Electric fencing

The invisible fence is mainly used to contain dogs, it maintains control over them through an invisible field of electricity. Typically, installation involves placing wire in a trench dug along the boundary that the owner wants to fence off. To activate the wire, a wireless transmitter is also set up nearby.

The last item is a battery-powered collar to receive a signal from the wire. The collar warns the animal with a sound when it is close to the boundary, transmitted only to the animal's hearing. If the animal attempts to cross the border, the collar will deliver an electrical shock.

bamboo fencing

Like hardwood flooring, bamboo fencing is starting to take off in the market. It can be grown naturally, so many of our green readers will be happy to hear that this is one of the most sustainable and attractive options on the market.

There are three styles of bamboo fencing:

  • live bamboo;
  • bamboo canes;
  • rolled bamboo.

Rolled bamboo and bamboo canes use poles connected together that are slightly stronger than live bamboo. Live bamboo can grow up to 30 cm per year. This style is not suitable for cold climates.

How to build a wooden fence with your own hands?

Wooden fencing is the most popular type used for wooden houses.. It is fairly easy to erect, although like all outdoor timber structures it will need constant maintenance over the years.

Here we'll take a look at how to install a wood panel fence, however these tips and instructions can be adapted for metal fences or more decorative hedges in your garden.

There are several different ways to install a panel fence, and this requires a variety of tools and materials. Our example is a panel fence that has:

  • wooden poles;
  • stakes fixed in the ground using concrete;
  • wooden panels that are attached to posts using nails;
  • without the use of gravel.

The first step is to determine how to build a fence so that it is sufficient, but not excessive in length. Think about how high a fence needs to be to provide privacy. Have an assistant walk around the perimeter with a cardboard sample showing the height of the proposed fence. Sitting and standing, keep an eye on the view above the cardboard as it moves to determine the amount of privacy your fence will actually provide.

So you can quickly decide where it should be higher, or immediately make it equally high to hide the entire yard. Then consider alternatives such as fast growing trees or shrubs that are not subject to height restrictions.

Necessary tools and materials

It is believed that the best time of the year to build a fence is early spring or late autumn to allow disturbed plants to recover in the summer.

Before starting work, it is important to carry out some necessary actions:

  • discuss plans with neighbors if construction will take place next to their property;
  • check the exact line of the boundary, as the fence may not have been built along the exact lines that match the property;
  • make sure the fence is yours before dismantling it. If it belongs to a neighbor, then you may have to build next to your side of the border.

There is an unwritten rule that a good neighbor puts up a fence with a post and partitions facing their own property, but this is not a legal obligation. (The location of the posts will help you find out who owns the fence if the builder is unknown).

Is planning permission required?

As a general rule, planning permission is not required for a fence less than 2 meters high. However, it will be required if the boundary line is on a highway or highway footpath and you want to install a 2m fence or add a fence over 1m high.

Not many different technologies have been preserved from ancient times to the present day. One of them is the manufacture of a fence from logs. We will talk about the types of such fences, technology and features of the process in this article.

Solution Features

The fence of a suburban area, made of logs, not only looks impregnable, but in fact it is. The main material for work is natural or machined parts with a diameter of 10-15 cm. The length of the cylinders is selected in relation to the average height of the fence, which is 170-180 cm.

There are several ways to get parts for installing a fence:

  1. At logging sites, select small-diameter whips that are not in demand by loggers;
  2. Purchase a rounded log of small diameter;

  1. Smooth birch cylinders of small diameter in unlimited quantities can be purchased at plywood mills. They are formed when cutting veneer from a log. The maximum length of such rods usually does not exceed 160 cm.

A log fence can be of two main types:

  • the first of them involves the vertical installation of parts;
  • in the second, the cylinders are arranged horizontally.

Each method has its own characteristics, which we will discuss below.

Fence from vertical logs

Palisade - a fence made of vertically placed logs. This is the oldest version of the fence, which was also used to protect the ancient Slavic settlements. It not only made it possible to obtain a solid log wall, but also had an additional protective element - the sharp ends of the parts.

To make such a fence with your own hands, proceed as follows:

  1. Prepare the necessary amount of material for work. Calculating the number of logs is not difficult - just divide the total length of the fence by the average diameter of the rods. So, for fencing a site of 15x20 meters, the number of rods with a diameter of 10 cm is determined by the formula: (15 + 20) * 2: 0.1 \u003d 700.
  2. The next step is to prepare the installation site.

It can be done in the following ways:

  • driving in stakes pointed at the bottom;
  • digging rods into a previously prepared trench;
  • combined method.

Note! It is better to use the last option. This will protect the upper, pre-pointed ends of the logs from splitting and greatly simplify the installation process.

Depending on the option chosen, pull a strong cord along the perimeter of the site, remove the sod along it and dig a ditch, the depth of which should be at least 0.6 meters, the width of the shovel bayonet. Next, we proceed to the preparation of logs.

  1. To protect the underground part of the wooden parts of the fence, our ancestors burned them over bonfires.. The formed coal is reliable, infested by fungi and insects and allowed the fence to stand for several decades. Of course, this method is still possible today, but there is an easier and faster solution.

We are talking about bituminous mastics, which have a viscous consistency and are completely ready for use.

It is only necessary to carefully cover the lower parts of the logs with bitumen for a length of 60 cm and let it dry. After that, you can proceed to the next stage of work.

  1. When installing the fence, install the logs in the ditch with the treated parts down as close to each other as possible.. Over time, due to the evaporation of moisture from the wood, the density of the material increases, but its diameter may decrease slightly, which will lead to the formation of gaps in the fence. To avoid this, it is better to use pre-dried parts.
