Vertical beds for bottled strawberries. Vertical beds for strawberries: the secrets of making and planting vertical beds. Vertical strawberry beds: preparing the land

Our parents used to grow strawberries using the carpet method, but adventurous gardeners have come up with various types of strawberry beds, allowing, at first spending a little time and effort, to subsequently receive large yields, ease of care, and when creating vertical beds - significant space savings.

First, choose a place

It has the following properties:

  • Allows increase yield by 50% in just a few weeks of use.
  • You can get a good harvest even on low fertile soils and in adverse climatic conditions
  • Absolutely safe

Vertical flower beds

Gardeners were forced to create them by the modest size of their summer cottages, and over time they became their decoration and created a lot of advantages.

Vertical flower beds made of PVC pipes

They are sold ready-made, but if you wish, you can make it yourself:

For filling, use ready-made soil or prepare it yourself. To do this, mix the soil with peat and turf. And also it is worth adding a little sand and sawdust to make the earth easier to pass water and oxygen for plants. In the lower part we fill in a layer of gravel, then the earth, not forgetting to compact, plant strawberries in the holes, pour through a watering pipe. Make sure that the water evenly moistens the soil abundantly along the entire length!

The disadvantage of this planting is the need to insulate for the winter. If the system is collapsible, then this can be easily dealt with by removing the beds into the cellar or lowering them into the water hatch, where the temperature does not drop below zero.

Why do we need multi-tiered flower beds?First of all, to save space. This is also how we catch sunlight and warmth. Don't forget about the convenience of care and harvesting. You can buy a tiered bed, but building it yourself of any shape and size is such a freedom for creativity.

We start construction

No professional skills are needed here. Special costs are also not expected, because we build from everything that is at hand: empty wooden containers, remnants of flat slate, unnecessary furniture.

Work order:

  1. Choosing a well-lit place, to level it up, the foundation will be useful.
  2. The best form of construction is a pyramid, and what its shape and size will be, you decide.
  3. The base can be a square, triangle, rectangle or even a circle. The slope angle can also be from very gentle to very steep.
  4. The width of each tier must be a multiple of the width of the row, that is, one, two or three rows.
  5. It is more expedient to make tiers in one row, then the width of each will be 40 centimeters, and we make the height, taking into account the depth of the roots.
  6. Drainage can be poured into the bottom of the lower tierthis is not necessary in arid climates.
  7. For protection from moles and other intruders you can put a metal mesh on the base.
  8. The tier is filled with fertile soil. Each subsequent tier is smaller than the previous one, but it is done in the same way.

What do we get in the end?As a result, the actual area under the strawberries increases several times compared to the base area. There is no need to work, bending over into three deaths, and if ampel varieties are grown in this way, then all gardeners will envy the beauty and abundance of such beds!

Flower beds for strawberries from plastic bottles

There is more than one method of using this waste material, here is one of them:

These living modules are used to decorate: a fence, and a garden one.

And here is the second way:

  1. Remove the bottoms of the bottles, and screw the caps.
  2. A window is cut in each bottle - the future hole.
  3. The neck is filled with drainage, and on top with fertile soil prepared in advance.
  4. We string bottles on a thin perforated tube with such a diameter that it passes into the neck. This tube will be used for watering.
  5. We put the necks down, so that there are no air pockets between the bottles.
  6. We fasten each low vertically to a lattice of laths, reinforcement or other base, plant plants in the holes.
  7. You can connect the autowatering system described above to such beds, or water it yourself into the tubes.

A significant disadvantage of vertical beds is the drying out of the soil. This can be avoided by using a hydrogel. It retains moisture and then evenly gives it to the plants. This saves from drying out and waterlogging.

Beds for strawberries from pallets

After the construction of the house, pallets remained. They can be used with benefit by making vertical strawberry beds.

Technology:

  1. Cut the pallet in half, the strips should be located along.
  2. Making a box, cover the inside with a black film.
  3. So that the structure does not rot, we treat it with an antiseptic.
  4. Fill in layers, alternating humus and earth... At the same time, the sides of the box must also be covered with a film so that the earth does not spill out.
  5. Planting strawberries on top of the box and on the sides, cutting through the crosses in the film.
  6. After planting, water abundantly and let it grow!
Pallet strawberry flower bed

If you want to save space, there can be as many tiers as you like. Just think over the watering method and mix the soil with the hydrogel.

Beds for strawberries from old tires

Thus, you kill two birds with one stone: you do not need to dispose of old tires, and you can make a wonderful strawberry garden out of them!

The first way

If there are tires of the same size, then we do this:

  1. We cut holes for holes with a chisel.
  2. We put the tires on top of each other, filling each with soil, applied with fertilizers. Every time we water the earth.
  3. We plant strawberry seedlings in the holes.

The advantage of this method is that the tires are strong enough to dispense with building a base.

Tire bed options

Second way

The meaning of this method is that tires of different sizes are needed here:

  1. The tires are installed, starting with the largest, and further to form a pyramid, filling each with earth.
  2. There is no need to cut holes for holes, since the seedlings are planted around the circumference of each tier.
  3. You can crown the pyramid with some kind of pot and plant a bush in it.
  4. Watering such a bed is easy, we will do only with ordinary watering from a hose.
  5. This method is the simplest, except for having tires of the required size, it does not cause any more difficulties.

Flowerbed in plastic bags

This technology is used when growing strawberries in greenhouses, in houses and other enclosed spaces. You can also grow outdoors, but then you have to think about protection from frost, strong winds, rain and drying out.

How to equip flower beds in bags:

Planting and leaving:

  • It is not difficult to plant seedlings in the cut crosses, but the care must be thorough and continuous.
  • Feed with potash every week. If you are afraid to overfeed with chemistry, add an infusion of chicken manure.
  • After the strawberries bear fruit, cut off old reddened and fallen leaves. They will dry out anyway, so why should the plant waste energy on them? The mustache is also removed.
  • If you want to get seedlings, then you can attach pots of soil and root a mustache in them.

If you like our tips, get started! Strawberries will feel great in properly built structures, just try to choose successful repair varieties.

Summarizing

In addition to the above methods, summer residents have come up with many more:

  • in barrels;
  • in a pots;
  • in grids and other containers.

These unusual flower beds have certain advantages, as well as disadvantages that cannot be ignored:

Benefits disadvantages
  • saving space;
  • the ability to transfer culture to loggias, balconies and roofs;
  • no need to "crawl on all fours" when leaving;
  • reducing the risk of disease and pests;
  • vertical beds are easier to cover from birds with nets;

With the help of vertical beds, you can solve the issue of the availability of an area for such a beloved berry - strawberries.

They are also a decoration of the site: neat walls from which ampelous plants of this culture hang.

Growing strawberries in vertical beds

The construction and location, thus, of planting bushes of fragrant berries is a good option for growing strawberries. The fact that a vertical bed saves space in the garden does not need to be convinced. But besides this dignity, it also has a number of others:

  • Beautiful aesthetic appearance. Cascading cascade with stem and whiskers of strawberry plants. It is especially mesmerizing when the culture is in bloom or when the fruit ripens. This structure can even be attached to the south side of the gazebos or facades of buildings, and thus decorate them.
  • Plants during vegetation and ripening of berries do not touch the ground, therefore, they do not get dirty or rot from excess moisture.
  • No total thickening of landings.
  • In containers and other containers with soil where strawberry bushes grow, no weedstherefore there is no need for weeding.
  • Easy to harvest - do not bend over too often, because most of the plants are at hand level.
  • The absence of pests in this area.

And now we will mention the negative aspects of vertical beds - where can we do without them:

  • In frost, the soil in the vessels freezes thoroughly... So that the plants do not disappear, they should be moved to a warmer place during the cold season.
  • Container culture needs frequent feeding, therefore, it should be applied regularly - about 1 time per week in a diluted form.
  • FROM ubstrata dries quickly and requires frequent irrigation... Water the soil in vessels every 3-5 days.

In the absence of drip irrigation, the hydrogel can partially save the situation. The balls absorb water and then give it to the plants little by little.

It is quite possible to adapt the wall of a loggia or balcony for vertical beds for growing strawberry bushes. If you plant remontant varieties in this way, then this will allow you to harvest almost a whole year.

Vertical beds can be made from a variety of materials and vessels. Containers for planting strawberries can be both wooden and made of plastic (containers, pots for flowerpots) and plastic (bottles and pipes).

How to do - instructions

We will look at how to build vertical beds from plastic pipes. This is an excellent material for the manufacture of a structure, since it is easy to install and does not require a lot of financial costs.

Vertical beds made of this material can be built in two ways.

Vertical bed from a vertical pipe

This simple construction is done by hand, and it makes it possible to install drip irrigation, which will be located inside the pipe. To make it, we should prepare:

  • PVC pipe. It is better to take it with a larger diameter, but the minimum diameter is 110 mm. The optimal length will be within 2-2.5 m.
  • Inner thin tube. It should be the same length as the previous one. Its diameter is about 20 mm, and the material is rubber, polyethylene or PVC.
  • Tool for cutting holes in pipes (sharp knife and drill with drill or awl).
  • Shovel.
  • Burlap or spunbond.
  • Gravel.
  • Fertile substrate.

Step 1.

Cut out holes 20-50 mm, you can in rows. The distance can be arbitrary, but it is optimal after 100-150 mm.

Step 2.

We are preparing the pipe through which drip irrigation will be carried out. With an awl or drill we make holes in rows. The intensity of soil irrigation depends on their frequency and magnitude. Next, we wrap with a material capable of passing water. It can be burlap or spunbond. Fix it on the pipe in several places. A plug is placed in the lower hole of the pipe. A watering can is fitted to the upper end.

Step 3.

We dig a large pipe into the ground to a depth of half a meter. We fill it with gravel around the pipe, and fill it with soil from above and seal it. The photo below shows mobile strawberry beds, such a portable design allows you to solve the problem of winter cold, in autumn they can be transferred to conditions comfortable for strawberries.

Step 4.

We insert the irrigation pipe inside the center, as in the photo. Gently pour a fertile substrate along the diameter from above. After drip irrigation, soil subsidence is possible, if necessary, add it.

Step 5.

Young rosettes of strawberry bushes are planted in the finished structure, see the photo.
As a simplified version, only a large pipe can be used. The advantage over the previous method is an increase in the amount of soil, the disadvantage is the inconvenience of irrigating plants.

A bed of horizontal cut pipes

Its design will be completely different from the previous one. Although the material and tools are the same.

They also create a multi-tiered system of beds for planting strawberry bushes with their own hands. It is advisable to build it on the southern wall of the building so that the berries ripen better. It is good if the wall serves as a stable side support. But the edge of the roof frame is also fine. The disadvantages in this case will be the swinging of the plastic pipes-containers in strong winds, and flooding them with rain.

Materials and tools to prepare:

  • Downpipes of a certain length;
  • Fastening materials;
  • Pipe cutting tool (special scissors);
  • Wire;
  • End caps for pipes;
  • Expanded clay;
  • Fertile substrate.

Step 1.

The photo does not show strawberries, but nothing prevents you from growing strawberries on such a rack.

The number of pipes should be taken 2 times less than the number of future tiers. Each of them is cut lengthwise into two halves. Plugs are placed along the edges. The optimal pipe length is up to 1.5 m.

Step 2.

In order for the roots of the planted plants to breathe freely, puncture holes in the received containers through 100 mm.

Step 3.

We start assembling the structure from the bottom. We wire the wire into the holes along the edges, and fix it.

Step 4.

We make the distance between the tiers as you wish. We bind each next container in the same way as the first. At the top, the wire is fixed.

Advice! The optimal number of tiers is 4-5 pieces. If there is more, then there will be an unreasonable load on the fastening of the wire. The total weight mainly includes the weight of the soil.

Step 5.

Last of all, we fill in expanded clay and substrate. We plant young rooted strawberry rosettes. To partially prevent drying, spunbond is covered between the bushes on top of the soil.

If you complete all the stages of creating a vertical bed structure with high quality, then it will delight you and your loved ones, both with delicious berries and a delightful element of landscape design.

Several ideas for horizontal pipe beds

There are no pipes in this photo, but the idea of hanging beds of thin shelving for which pipes can be used and attracts.

A bed in the form of a pyramid

The video below provides instructions on how to make a pyramidal vertical strawberry bed.

Unusual designs invented by gardeners to save space on the site, which have become a highlight in the garden, are vertical beds. The further, the more new designs are invented by craftsmen. Most of these structures are created by hand from the most affordable and inexpensive materials. Vegetables, herbs, flowers, strawberries, and herbs are grown on such beds. Today we'll talk about

Growing strawberries in vertical beds

Pyramids made of boards

The most common are board pyramids. Such structures make it possible to plant berry bushes in several tiers on one site. Each subsequent row takes up a smaller area than the previous one. This creates even lighting for plants of all tiers, and there are more bushes per unit of base area. In such beds, berry fields grow on steps arranged in a pyramid.

The advantages of pyramidal beds include the original appearance, ease of processing, and less, in comparison with traditional planting, the number of weeds and pests.

The easiest way is to make a vertical bed of their wooden boxes, which are folded in various ways. It can be folded with a ladder when the back wall is even, and in front of each subsequent row is 30 cm narrower than the previous one. The number of rows is chosen arbitrarily. All boxes are hammered together of the same length, but different widths. It is better to choose the length of the box no more than 2.5-3m. The width of the lower box should be about 100cm, the next - 70, the last upper box - 40cm.

The selected area is leveled, covered with non-woven material so that weeds do not grow. The knocked-down boxes are installed on the material with a ladder. The resulting structure is filled with nutrient soil, which must be compacted and shed with water. If necessary, top up the soil to the required level.

Strawberry bushes are planted on the resulting steps. If desired, the soil can be covered with a covering material to limit the growth of weeds, it will not interfere with watering. This berry ladder can be installed against any wall or fence.

If you put together square boxes with dimensions of 150 * 150, 90 * 90, 40 * 40, then you will get a nice pyramid from them. During flowering and during the ripening period of berries, it will become a decoration of the site. You can collect them in different ways.

Craftsmen make real decorative beds that decorate the site.

And here's another pyramid.

Tire pyramids

Another vertical bed design is made from car tires. In each tire, a window is cut out into which berry bushes will be planted. If the tires are of the same size, then they are stacked. In the middle of this stack, a perforated PVC pipe is installed, plugged at the lower end. The garden bed will be watered through it.

Tires of different sizes are installed in a pyramid, starting with the largest, an irrigation pipe is also installed in the center of the structure. The disadvantages of this design include the following points: environmental insecurity - car tires are not the most environmentally friendly material. It is possible to plant ornamental plants in such a pyramid, but berries, vegetables or greens are unsafe.

One more point must be taken into account when creating a vertical bed of tires - each installed tire must be filled with soil separately. But this will be very difficult to do, especially if you do not cut the sidewalls. It is difficult to fill the inner cavity with earth. No matter how hard you try to compact the soil in the wheels, after watering there will still be a lot of voids. Therefore, it is better to delete them. In addition, in hot weather, heated tires give off a not very pleasant smell. To reduce overheating, you can paint them with light paint. Here everyone can show their imagination.

Garden beds

Another interesting design for planting strawberries is hanging PVC pipe beds.

When planning to assemble such a structure, you need to think about where the beds will be installed. The ideal option is the sunny south or southeast side of the gazebo or fence.

Greens and flowers grow well - strawberries will love it too

To create such beds, you will need PVC gutters, each 1 m long; PVC plugs; steel or nylon cables, fastening materials. First, along the entire length of the gutters, holes are arranged to drain excess water, and at the ends, holes are needed for hanging the structure, where the cable is threaded. The ends of the gutters are closed with plugs, the bottom is lined with dense synthetic material to prevent soil leaching. The resulting containers are filled with nutrient soil and berries are planted.

The convenience of using such beds is that they are easy to remove for winter storage.

You can plant strawberry bushes in upright pipes.

Strawberries in bags

Bags are also used as vertical beds. You will need bags of thick polyethylene with a width of 20 to 50 cm. A perforated pipe is inserted inside for uniform irrigation and application of liquid fertilizers. The bags are filled with nutrient soil, holes are cut in the side walls for planting strawberry seedlings. The distance between the holes should be at least 20 cm. Planting care is reduced to watering, fertilizing and harvesting.

Vertical beds from plastic bottles

Very interesting designs are obtained from plastic bottles. This is the most economical way to create vertical beds. There are several options for such designs.

One of the options. It will require plastic bottles with a capacity of 2.5 liters, supports to which the bottles will be attached. As a support for such a bed, you can use a stretched metal mesh or a wooden shield. The bottom of the plastic bottle is cut off. The plug is screwed onto the neck so that it does not fall, but the water can flow out.

From the top cut down, two cuts are made about 5 cm deep. The resulting petal is folded inside the bottle. Turn the container upside down, fill it with nutrient soil 1 cm below the cutout. A strawberry bush is planted in the cut window. The resulting pot with a planted plant is fixed on a support. The next pot prepared in the same way is lowered with a cork down into the previous one and fixed on the support. Thus, they build vertical beds of the desired height. Irrigation water flows through the entire vertical bed from top to bottom without stagnating.

Another option for making vertical beds from plastic bottles. 2.5 liter containers are closed with a stopper, a window is cut out in the side wall through which earth is poured, seedlings are planted and watered, and drainage holes are pierced in the bottom. The bottle with the planted plant is horizontally fixed on the support. If desired, such a container with a planted plant can be painted with acrylic paint.

Very interesting objects are obtained if empty ceramic pots, located at a slight angle, are fixed on a vertically dug-in piece of reinforcement. Soil is poured into these pots, strawberry bushes are planted. All that remains is to water and harvest.

Square flower pots, strung on a piece of reinforcement, and turned 90 degrees relative to each other, look original. The pots are filled with soil, and strawberry bushes are planted in the free corners. The advantage of such a planting is that it is very easy to store it in the fall.

Advantages and advantages of vertical beds

All the designs of vertical beds cannot be counted, new and new ideas appear every day. So what drives gardeners to create new species?

  • The ability to grow a significant harvest of berries or greens in a small area, even on the balcony.
  • Such beds are very easy to care for. Saplings and seedlings are located at a convenient height. No need to bend over or crawl on your knees when doing the necessary maintenance or harvesting.
  • Berries or flowers growing on such beds are less likely to be affected by diseases, and pests are not so common on them. It is more convenient to deal with these misfortunes on vertical beds. Birds are also less likely to damage crops in such plantings.
  • Taking care of such plantings can interest children - such plantings look very unusual.

There is always a fly in the ointment in every barrel of honey. Vertical beds are not without drawbacks.

Minuses

  1. Plants planted in such beds need to be watered frequently. The volume of land in which the plants are planted is very small, moisture evaporates quickly, especially on a sunny day. This disadvantage can be mitigated by using a hydrogel or installing drip irrigation.
  2. The limited volume of soil in the planting tanks leads to the need to apply additional fertilizing more often.
    Only small or dwarf plants can grow normally in small pots.

The lack of space is forcing the owners of suburban areas to move from free-flowing horizontal gardening to a more compact vertical one. Pros and cons of vertical beds

The idea of arranging a vegetable garden or greenhouse in a vertical direction is associated primarily with the need to save usable space. Gardening magazines tease new crops to plant on the site: pumpkin loofah, romanesco cabbage, strawberry spinach.

Original bookcase made of thick bamboo stumps

Breeders tirelessly promote more stable and productive varieties of the usual radishes, onions, and cucumbers to the north. And if you want to try to grow all this and put it into culinary business, a vertical vegetable garden becomes an absolute must.

Not a single berry will get lost

What are the advantages of a gardener from a vertical planting method

Unusual beds, located in tiers one above the other, increase the area of the site by 2-5 times and have a number of valuable qualities:

  1. Ease of maintenance. Working with a bent back and lowered head is harmful for the elderly, as well as for people suffering from myopia, sciatica, hernia, hypertension, and for pregnant housewives. A comfortable vertical bed is built at the waist level, so caring for it in terms of its impact on health differs little from ordinary kitchen troubles.
  2. Mobility. Economy beds can be designed in such a way that they can be rearranged to another place. In case of frost, hail, strong wind, or just for the winter, they can be removed under a roof.
  3. Purity. Plants in vertical plantings do not come into contact with the ground, therefore, they can avoid damage by certain pathogens (tobacco mosaic virus, gray rot spores), and pests (slugs). The same factor reduces the frequency and intensity of chemical treatments of crops.
  4. Rapid heating of the soil. Its small volume, and even raised above the ground, allows you to start cultivating crops in the open field, sometimes a month earlier. The degree of heating can be adjusted by painting the containers white or dark.

Fantastic landscape of a modern garden

Besides bringing utilitarian benefits, a vertical vegetable garden can also serve aesthetic purposes. Beautiful pyramid beds, planting in bags or hanging nets - what is not the highlight of ultra-fashionable landscape design?

What problems of unusual landings should you think about in advance?

Some pluses of a vertical garden turn into minuses when viewed from a different angle. So, a small volume of soil not only warms up quickly in spring, but just as rapidly freezes in winter, which excludes a similar method of cultivating perennials in the temperate zone and above. The list of crops that feel free in such beds is quite large, but it consists mainly of annuals with a compact root system and small fruits:

  • green (dill, onion, basil, salads);
  • beans and other legumes;
  • cucumbers and tomatoes;
  • strawberries.

Design reminiscent of a Mexican cult pyramid

The latter culture, as well as other perennials (tarragon, sorrel, lingonberry), is cultivated on vertical ridges, if possible, for the cold season, rearrange the racks in a frost-free room or disassemble and cover them.

Isolation from the main soil stratum forces the plantings to be fed more often. At the design stage, the question of how to water vertical beds will surely come up: from above - through special holes or by drip irrigation. The earth in small containers dries out quickly, and therefore it is recommended to mix it with vermiculite or hydrogel, which quickly absorb and gradually release moisture.

Varieties of vertical beds

The technical solution of vertical beds for a specific site depends on the crops that are planned to be planted on them, the allocated area, the climatic zone, material capabilities and the owner's imagination.

Typically, these beds are made from long flower boxes and large pots. Ample opportunities are provided by the use of used car tires and PET bottles, the remains of a gabion net, cuttings of pipes and boards. The only condition for the use of such materials is the aesthetics with which they will fit into the existing ensemble of summer cottages.

The main thing is to provide an approach to the plants of the upper tier.

Multi-tiered beds as a type of vertical garden

The simplest solution to save space and ease the labor of caring for plantings is to arrange the beds in tiers. They can be laid with their own hands at any point in the personal plot, including near the house, since the unusual appearance makes tiered beds related to flower beds. They look great on the sides of the stairs, decorate the dull walls of sheds and fences, unexpectedly "play" on the bends of garden paths.

Multilevel structures allow you to take into account the difference in the needs of plants. For example, the simplest two-tier garden bed provides the crops of the upper floor (peppers, tomatoes, or cucumbers) with warmer soil and more sun, while the inhabitants of the lower floor (beets, carrots, cabbage) will receive more moisture and light shading.

The material for the construction of tiered beds are boxes, boards, slate, curb tape, bricks. A designer three-tiered bed can be made from an old chest of drawers by sliding its drawers to different depths. If possible, to provide a strong support, the plants can be resettled in PVC pipe scraps. The least labor-intensive option is to put five-liter plastic bottles filled with fertile soil on racks.

Especially popular are the multi-tiered beds for growing strawberries and strawberries. The fruits in them do not touch the soil, do not become polluted and do not become infected with gray rot. The ground below them does not need to be mulched. This method is ideal for indoor and southern regions, where plants do without shelter in winter.

Pyramidal beds for summer cottages

A variety of multi-tiered gardens are pyramid beds. They do not need additional support, admit the presence of 6-7 floors with free access to each, save the landing space as much as possible, represent an independent and at the same time very effective element of landscape design.

It is easiest to build a pyramidal bed for strawberries and other crops with your own hands from several worn tires of different diameters. If possible, it is better to select imported winter tires: they are more pliable in processing. The larger the bottom cover is, the higher the entire structure can become.

They are inferior to rubber in durability, but surpass it in terms of maintaining an acceptable soil temperature, boards - the best material for arranging pyramid beds for strawberries in the southern regions. In the absence of lingering dampness and after prophylactic impregnation with an antiseptic, the tree will last ten years.

The range of strawberry whiskers allows you to create spectacular cascading beds that resemble green waterfalls. Foliage and young rosettes seem to flow from step to step, creating a very attractive flower garden.

If you have a sufficient number of flower pots of the same type, you can make a narrow decorative bed in a cascade. To do this, pots in the amount of 4-5 pieces are strung on a steel reinforcing bar, after which soil is poured into them.

Neat hanging beds

The main advantage of suspended structures is the ability to place them at any convenient height and remove them for the winter. An elementary solution is to plant vegetables in the same pots that are usually used for petunias and pelargoniums. They come in the form of pots and boxes, and have their own mountings. If you have the materials and skills to work with them, you can do absolutely unique hanging beds with your own hands.

Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Depending on the quality of the support (wall of a house or garage, fence, special rack), containers of different volumes and weights can be hung. It can be drinking water bottles, jute and polymer bags, tires. Details of plastic drainage systems and thick sewer pipes look aesthetically pleasing.

And no one will say that this is also a vegetable garden

Small bright bags with two or three strawberry bushes can be hung anywhere in the garden: in the trees, on the swing bar, on the porch posts. At the end of the fruiting season, the same bags are suitable for placing ampelous plants. Watch a video on how to use ready-made hanging bags in your garden.

We make vertical beds with our own hands

With the existing variety of ready-made suspended and multi-tiered structures for arranging a garden, making vertical beds with your own hands is much more profitable. This allows you to measure the dimensions of the products and the corners of the site intended for them, as well as dispose of unclaimed, but still workable trimming materials.

Some of these materials, such as tires or PET bottles, are not even used in gardening factories. It takes very little time and skill to make exclusive garden decorations out of them.

A vegetable garden on the wall made of plastic beer crates

Mobile bed from a bag and a barrel

For maximum space saving, vertical beds in the country can be quickly made from a ready-made bag, both natural (jute, kenaf) and plastic. In this case, the main thing is to assess the final weight of the product, together with soil and plants. A heavy potato bag will have to be set on the ground, giving it a stable position. Lighter ones can be hung on fences or specially supplied supports, for which each container must be equipped with a loop.

Both productive and decorative

If there is a need to get a set of bags of a certain size, you can make them yourself using the following technology:

  • cut out a rectangle twice as long as the estimated size of the bag; the recommended width of the part is 30 cm (taking into account the seam allowances - 34 cm), then a bag with a diameter of 20 cm will eventually come out;
  • stitch the side seams, then turn them out and stitch again - you get a strong double seam; if the bag is plastic, fasten the edges of the parts with a special soldering iron or iron through paper;
  • fold and hem the top edge twice (for woven fabrics);
  • sew on a strong loop;
  • fill the bag with nutritious soil;
  • make cuts along the length of the bag to accommodate the seedlings.

Strawberry vertical beds can be made larger, not 20, but 40 cm in diameter. Their height is limited only by how convenient it will be to reach the top edge of the bag with your hand.

Soft bags have drawbacks: polyethylene will last a maximum of two seasons, burlap will gradually decay from dampness. Therefore, vertical beds for cucumbers that require a constantly high level of humidity are best made of a more durable material, for example, a metal or plastic barrel.

Durable Tire Pyramid

Car enthusiasts periodically face the problem of disposal of "bald" tires. If you collect tires of different diameters, you can assemble tiered beds from them in no time, which will replace half of the garden. The order of work is as follows:

  1. Rinse the tires with a strong pressure of water from a hose, dry in the breeze and cut off the upper side from each. This can be done with a knife or jigsaw, remembering to moisten the blade with a solution of laundry soap.
  2. If desired, the tires can be painted in one color or with an ornament: the outer side is completely, the inner side is a third of the depth. Any oil, acrylic and enamel paint can be applied to the degreased rubber.
  3. Place the largest tire on the designated spot. Cover the bottom with geotextile against weeds and bear. Pour 5-7 cm of crushed stone drainage, above - fertile soil.
  4. Put the second tire in the center of the first tire, repeat all operations, except for placing the geotextile. Round beds for cucumbers and other vegetables are ready.

A little more, and the nondescript surface will be covered with greenery

If there are no different-sized tires, you can build a pyramid of identical ones, but then you have to cut a sufficient number of holes on the side for planting plants.

Gray tires, especially worn ones, are not very decorative, so it is good to make a cascading vertical bed for strawberries, the whiskers of which will quickly hide rubber alien to the garden.

Miracle garden made of plastic pipes

Making beds from PVC pipes is more labor-intensive than from tires or bags, but they have several advantages at once:

  • durability, especially if these are pipes for laying external sewerage;
  • aesthetics;
  • the ability to supply drip irrigation.

Vegetable rack made of white PVC pipes - elegant and practical

Structurally, vertical plastic beds are divided into two types. The first involves the installation of a base, on which pipes are laid in a horizontal position in several levels. It is easy to rotate such an installation, covering it from the scorching sun or, conversely, adding light to the leaves. At the end of the growing season, it can be easily disassembled and stored.

Collapsible Vegetarian Brown Sewer Pipes

The second type includes vertical beds made of plastic pipes for strawberries. They are made as follows:

  1. Prepare the required number of pipes of two sizes: the outer ones must have a diameter of at least 11 cm, the inner ones for drip irrigation - about 2 cm. The inner pipes can be not only PVC, but also rubber or polyethylene (hoses).
  2. In thick pipes, at a distance of 15 cm from each other, drill large holes of such a size that the plants and the earth do not fall out of them. Make as many narrow holes as possible in thin pipes. A small drill (for rubber pipes) or even a boot awl (for PVC pipes) is suitable for their preparation.
  3. Close the lower ends of thin pipes with plugs made of moisture-resistant material. Wrap the pipes along their entire length with any agrofibre that allows water to pass through - this will prevent them from entering the ground.
  4. Dig the main pipes into the ground to a depth of about half a meter, fill their lower part with gravel drainage. Insert thin pipes into the main ones in the center and cover the space between their walls with earth, tamp them.
  5. Crown the structure with a container of water, for example, a two-liter plastic bottle. First, cut off the bottom from it, so that it is convenient to add water without removing the bottle from the pipe.

Invisible metal mesh beds

In the presence of the remains of the chain-link, you can do it yourself in the garden with compact, well-heated and sufficiently mobile containers for growing vegetables. The mesh is rolled up in a roll, the recommended diameter of which is 80-90 cm. The edges are fixed with knitting wire, the structure is fixed to the ground with metal pins.

Finished vertical beds from the mesh are laid along the edges with straw, which will prevent soil loss. The central part is covered with fertile soil, in which, for example, potato tubers are planted. Original cucumber beds can be obtained by laying a tire on the bottom of the container: the roots will be warm under the protection of rubber, and the lashes will rise along the net.

Hybrid of gabion and potato field

Gardeners offer a variety of examples of vertical beds made of plaster, construction, gabion nets. All of them are quite durable, especially plastic ones. It is desirable to cover metal products with an anti-corrosion compound.

Each tomato bush - a separate "apartment"

Hanging gardens from plastic bottles

Plants with compact roots can fit comfortably in 2 liter PET bottles. A hanging bed from a plastic bottle is prepared as follows:

  • washed, remove the label;
  • cut in half;
  • the upper part, with a neck, is turned over, filled with earth and inserted into the lower one.

Bottle pot for vertical placement

The resulting vertical beds for greenery are suspended on a support with a wire. It is even easier to place the whole bottle horizontally, make a cutout for the plant in the upper part, and drill drainage holes from the bottom.

Bottle vertical beds can be arranged with your own hands even in an apartment, for example, on a warm, sunny loggia. To do this, they need to be selected according to their tone, partially covered with colored drainage sand and fixed on the wall as inconspicuously as possible.

Vertical vegetable growing is gaining popularity not only among the owners of tiny six acres. The owners of large plots are also trying to get the garden out of sight, clothe it in an unusual shape, or simply reduce the area of potato and strawberry plots without compromising the harvest.

The vacated area can be sown with a lawn, a playground or an elegant barbecue area. Spending no more than half an hour a day on the care of vertical plantings, the summer resident understands that his estate is the territory of a truly pleasant vacation.

The vertical strawberry bed combines convenience and practicality. A vertical bed is made of large-diameter polyvinyl chloride pipes. This material is highly durable and environmentally friendly. DIY strawberry beds from PVC pipes can be made not only at their summer cottage. Consider how to make a vertical plastic strawberry bed on your own.

A vertical strawberry bed is not exotic, but the implementation of high technology and a creative approach to growing berries. Not all summer cottage owners can boast of huge areas of their plots. As a rule, every square meter counts.

A vertical strawberry bed made of plastic pipes has the following advantages:

  1. Ease of assembly. When installing a structure, there is no need to come up with ways to attach individual parts. The accessories can be purchased ready-made, as they have already been developed for sewer systems.
  2. Immunity to weather. Since the soil and berry bushes are elevated above the ground, they are not in danger of being washed away by streams of water that are the result of heavy rainfall.
  3. Biological stability. The location of the strawberry plantation above the surface of the soil makes it inaccessible to most insects and rodents.
  4. Easy to harvest and water. Bed maintenance does not involve bending or squatting. All berries are within arm's length.
  5. Protection of plants from accidental damage. They will not be crushed by animals, children or guests.
  6. No need for preparatory work on the ground surface. Strawberries in vertical beds do not need drainage or fencing. Plastic beds can be installed over asphalt, tiles, or lawn.
  7. Mobility. The PVC vertical bed can be moved to a new location at any time. For this, operational disassembly and assembly is carried out.
  8. Isolation of the bushes. This prevents an epidemic from occurring if one of the bushes gets sick.

Don't forget about cost. It is available even for people with low income. The pipes can be transported on the roof and in the trunk of a passenger car.

Tools, fixtures and materials

To make a strawberry bed from plastic pipes, there is no need to invite specialists or call helpers. All work can be done by hand within 1 day. To avoid complications during the construction process and to minimize the amount of waste, it is necessary to draw up a detailed project. The dimensions of the structure should be based on the parameters of the plastic pipes. The dimensions of the finished structure should be multiples of the length of the whole pipe or half of it. After drawing up the drawing, the calculation of the material and the necessary equipment is carried out.

To make your own vertical strawberry beds, you will need:

  • electric drill or screwdriver;
  • bayonet and shovels;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • crowns for drilling holes with a diameter of 100 mm;
  • pVC pipes with a diameter of 16 mm and 200 mm;
  • plastic tees and plugs;
  • drill 3 mm;
  • twine or cord;
  • sackcloth;
  • soil for berries;
  • fine gravel;
  • seedling.

Installation of the structure must be carried out in the place where it will be located permanently. The assembled bed has a rather large weight and is not transportable.

Assembling the frame from plastic pipes

Work should be carried out in dry warm weather. Make sure all accessories are present and in good working order.

The installation of the frame is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Marking is done in accordance with the drawing. The base for the pipes is leveled. If necessary, backfilling with soil or gravel is carried out.
  2. Workpieces are cut from pipes with a diameter of 200 mm. Cut points are cleaned.
  3. Marks are made on the pipes, along which holes of 100 mm are drilled at intervals of 150-200 mm. The sharp edges of the holes are rounded.
  4. The base of the frame is assembled from pipes and tees. To make the connection easier, the rubber cuffs can be lubricated with petroleum jelly.
  5. Fine gravel is poured into the base. It is necessary to give the structure stability. Also, the lower part of the frame is used as a reservoir for collecting excess water after irrigation.
  6. Vertical posts are inserted into the bottom tees of the base. Crosspieces are mounted on them. The upper piping of 200 mm pipes is fixed between them.

The assembly of the frame is complete. The strength of the connection, vertical and horizontal, is checked. After eliminating the shortcomings, the next stage of the construction of the beds is carried out.

Drainage arrangement and planting

The frame is assembled, now you can start the irrigation system and planting plants.

The process of greening a plastic bed is carried out as follows:

  1. From pipes with a diameter of 16 mm, workpieces are cut 10 cm longer than the height of the frame. Plastic plugs are fixed to their lower part. A plurality of holes are drilled in the tube with a 3 mm drill.
  2. The processed tubes are wrapped in burlap. A cord is wound over the fabric. Burlap is needed to prevent the formation of a strong jet of water when watering.
  3. The fabric-wrapped pipes are lowered into vertical posts. They are being aligned. A layer of gravel 25-30 cm high is covered.
  4. Backfilling of fertile soil begins. In order to seal it, water is spilled. The filled soil must reach the next hole. After that, a berry bush is planted in it. After that, backfilling continues.
  5. As soon as the soil layer in the risers reaches the top, backfilling stops. The risers are closed with plugs.

The option of arranging a volumetric structure was presented. It can be made as a decorative fence.

And there is no need to stop there. Beds made of PVC pipes can be decorated in a rather original way. White products are painted under birch trunks. To do this, you need to apply many strokes of black paint. Climbing plants with roots in the ground can be put through pipes. This will not only decorate the garden bed, but also create a slight shade for the berry bushes.

Maintenance of vertical beds

The berries in these beds are devoid of rainwater. It is problematic to water them with a garden hose. Therefore, you need to regularly fill the vertical pipes with water using a regular watering can. For the convenience of watering, you can use a narrow funnel. Since the frame made of PVC pipes is an almost closed system in which there is practically no evaporation, frequent watering is not needed. The need for it is determined by checking the soil moisture by hand. Even if the earth in the risers dries out, moisture will come from the storage tank, which is the base.

If horizontal bridges are used to place strawberries, then such places need water much more often. They need to be watered like berries that grow in an ordinary earthen bed.

A separate issue is the process of wintering plants.... If ordinary berries spend the cold time under the snow, then for seedlings in a plastic structure, a separate approach is needed. You can protect the berries with spruce paws. They are applied to pipes in several layers and fixed with wire. A good solution is to use rolls of mineral wool. This material is neutral, has excellent thermal insulation properties, is resistant to fire, does not absorb moisture, and repels rodents and birds.
