Choosing a paint roller. Rollers for painting: varieties and features of use Which roller to use for oil paint

How to choose a paint roller? Any such tool turns the boring work of decorating a room into a creative process. Rollers are available in a wide variety of designs and sizes. When choosing a product, it is necessary to take into account the task at hand. How to paint with a roller, the article will tell you the tricks of their use.

The simplest roller for painting ceilings or walls is a wooden or plastic cylinder with a full-length hole; bushings in the form of washers made of copper or other material are installed on its ends. The product is equipped with a shaft with a handle.

A stop is installed at one end of the axis, a thread is cut under a nut with a washer at the other, or a cotter pin is installed. A cover or nozzle is put on and fixed on the roller. When assembling, the cylinder must rotate freely around the axis, preventing it from jumping off.

With this design:

  • Performance is greatly improved.
  • The shading of paints changes qualitatively.
  • The formulations can be applied on any substrate.
  • No dripping or splashing on other surfaces.
  • No lint or hair remains on the layer after application.
  • The coating is carried out evenly, without any traces of the cover material on the roller.

Rollers and mini-rollers are made of various materials: natural whitewash, velor or artificial:

  • Polyamide rollers all types of paints are applied, made on bases that contain solvents or water-dispersion compositions. Such material is capable of absorbing and giving off paint well. It is easy to clean, does not require special care, and is resistant to aggressive elements that are part of the paints.

Polyamide is a fairly wear-resistant material that allows you to achieve excellent results when painting surfaces with any type of paint. Convenient pile length, fine thread structure allow painting uneven, rough, bumpy surfaces.

  • Polyacrylic roller It is used when applying water-based formulations or for all types of paints and varnishes with a limited amount of solvents. Polyacryl has similar properties to polyamide, but with less wear resistance and poorer coating quality.

They have a long service life, best suited for semi-rough surfaces, but also suitable for rough and smooth surfaces.

  • Polyester roller dispersion paints, compositions for walls and ceilings are applied. Such a material with a homogeneous fiber structure has the least resistance to wear.
  • Foam roller for painting it is used for painting surfaces with water-based adhesives. It is absolutely not suitable for enamels, oil paints and varnishes. This is due to the fact that the solvents included in their composition corrode the foam rubber, and pieces of material remain on the painted surface.
  • Roller with fur attachment used for enamels, varnishes and oil paints. The most uniform paint application is ensured by the lacquered rollers.
  • Velours helps to get a fairly smooth surface. It is natural or with the addition of synthetics, a material with a homogeneous structure, with a short pile, ideal for covering smooth surfaces, allows you to create a uniform, good quality layer.
  • Structural beads are used for applying plasters and structural paints to give the surface a textured fine-grained coating.
  • Pressing rubber rollers are used for smoothing. With their help, you can expel air from under the wallpaper, roll up seams, evenly distribute glue on the surface.
  • Plastic clamping products used for rolling up wallpaper seams.
  • Needle roller It is used for perforating drywall and removing wallpaper.
  • Roller for self-leveling floor painting... Serves for rolling the face layers of uncured composition, for air removal or deaeration.
  • Roller for decorative painting designed for applying plaster and thick paint, to obtain a relief surface (see Rollers for decorative plaster and creating a relief surface).
  • Roller for painting corners, in the photo VMU, is used for internal corners.
  • Paneled rollers convenient for infill, so as not to cut out stencils or make a special ruler.

  • Pipe paint roller, railings of balconies, stairs and other objects.

How to paint bark beetle plaster

Bark beetle plaster is one of the most popular types of decorative coating. It can be used for interior and exterior finishing. A fairly simple painting technology and an affordable price are combined with a spectacular appearance.

The disadvantages when painting a bark beetle include:

  • The presence of a variety of grooves and bulges that complicate the surface painting. It is quite difficult to paint such a relief with an ordinary roller. In this case, you will need to use hand painting with a brush.
    First, the surface is painted with a roller.

Tip: For coloring the bark beetle, you should choose a thicker roller.

The tool is saturated with paint as much as possible, which can flow into all the depressions and paint the elevations.

Tip: If paint accumulates in the recesses, it must be collected with a dry roller. All non-painted surfaces that appear should be tinted with a brush manually.

  • When painting the bark beetle (see. Painting the Bark beetle plaster - all methods) in one color, the coating does not look too beautiful.
    It is better to paint the surface twice, while applying the second layer in a different color. Thus, a spectacular appearance is achieved. In this case, the potholes and grooves will remain with the original layer, and a coating of a different color will be applied on top.

The disadvantages of the bark beetle include the difficulty of applying a two-color layer with your own hands.

To paint a surface in two colors, you need:

  • Add color while mixing directly into the plaster. In this case, the coating acquires the desired color during the preparation of the material. You can use ready-made colors that you just need to stir thoroughly.
  • When painting the coating, it is better to use a special roller for painting the bark beetle... It is a little more difficult for them to paint the surface and the paint consumption is slightly higher, but with such a tool you can effectively cover all the grooves on the surface.

How to clean and maintain your roller after use

Quality tools are quite expensive, but they can last a long time if properly cared for. Before storing the roller after painting, it should be properly cleaned after use.

The instructions for cleaning the roller from water-based paint suggest:

  • Prepared:
  1. capacity;;
  2. cleaning solution;
  3. softener for all rollers that were used during work.
  • For each type of roller, the bucket is filled with warm water and two cups of material softener are added to it and everything is thoroughly mixed.
  • After dissolving the fabric softener, the solution breaks the tension on the surface of the water and the paint will begin to dissolve faster.

Tip: If necessary, the roller can be cleaned with plain water or a mild dishwashing detergent. In addition, the paint can be rolled out onto newspapers laid out on the floor, after removing the excess by rolling a roller with pressure in a paint tray.

  • The roller is lowered into a bucket of prepared solution for 20 seconds.
  • The tool is removed from the bucket and rinsed under a stream of warm water until the liquid becomes clear.
  • After peeling off the paint from the roller, it must be squeezed out of the water as best as possible and put on an old, preferably terry, towel. You can use paper towels in a thick layer to absorb all the moisture.

To clean oil paint:

Tip: Do not take water to clean the roller, when using oil-based paint: the paint will not dissolve in water alone, it must be removed with alcohol or turpentine.

  • Excess paint is removed from the roller by rolling it back and forth over old newspapers.
  • Alcohol or turpentine, which will serve as a solvent for the paint, is poured into a clean dish.
  • A roller with paint is lowered into the solution and rolled back and forth, as when painting.
  • The tool is rolled over old newspapers and, if there is still paint on it, the process is repeated.
  • After cleaning, the roller is hung on a nail or any hook for drying.
  • After drying, the instrument is covered with aluminum foil or plastic wrap to protect it from dirt and dust.

The video in this article will show you the details of caring for the instrument.

A few tips for using paint rollers:

  • If the repair has stopped for a short time, the roller can be placed in a plastic bag to prevent it from drying out.
  • The tool can be stored in a tightly closed bag in the refrigerator. After that, it will take some time to defrost it before using it.

To apply paint on the surface, you must choose the right tool, and after finishing work, provide it with proper care and storage.

Rollers are an irreplaceable thing when painting surfaces. They come in different sizes and types, each designed for a specific job. The variety of options in the store makes it possible to purchase the most suitable tool.

Paint roller: how to choose a tool to translate a design idea

It is impossible to imagine a renovation without a paint roller when it comes to painting walls. Due to the variety of products in the store, choosing such a tool is easier. Meeting the needs of the customer, a roller for applying an even coat of paint or creating a ribbed surface is considered an indispensable aid.

An irreplaceable assistant in painting walls - a roller: purpose

During repairs, an even layer of paint is applied to the overall area. A not so long ago invented device - a roller can offer invaluable help in this. With its help, it is quite simple and quick to paint the surface, and it can be either a monochromatic coating or a decorative one full of patterns.

How to choose by size

The main part of the device is a cylinder of different types:

    1. mini - having a diameter of 3–9 cm and a length of up to 15 cm. A tool with such a cylinder is used to paint surfaces with a small area;
    2. midi - practical medium-sized rollers. The diameter of the cylinder is 9 cm, and the length is up to 20 cm. This is a type for finishing the inner surface of the house;
    3. maxi - used for exterior decoration of the house. The diameter of such a cylinder is 8 cm, the length is 30 cm.

The size of the tool is selected in accordance with the area of the painted surface. For small works they use mini, and for large ones - midi and maxi.

Sometimes it seems that using large rollers to decorate the walls of rooms is better because they are oversized. But, during interior work, the base becomes heavy due to absorption, and the paint splashes or leaks. Another thing is at home: in the fresh air, the coating dries faster, so speed plays a decisive role. For such work, tools with a maxi-sized cylinder are used.

How to determine the length of the pile

The quality of the work performed depends on the correctly chosen length of the fur coat. Depending on the structure of the surface for painting, rollers with different pile lengths are used.

  1. Up to 5 mm. - for painting smooth surfaces (mainly varnishing).
  2. 5-10 mm. - for painting ceilings and plastered walls.
  3. 5–20 mm. It is mainly used for painting concrete surfaces, unpolished wood or rough plaster.
  4. 20-30 mm. Coats with a long pile length are used to paint brick, concrete surfaces, walls with embossed plaster, strong porosity and roughness.

Smooth, do not require much effort for coloring, a short nap will be enough. Another thing is a surface with many irregularities and roughness, for their finishing it is advisable to choose a roller with a long pile. The variety of combinations of options for these components makes it possible to choose the right tool for its use in painting.

Components of the roller

The tool has two components: the machine and the main working surface of the cylinder - the fur coat. The machine consists of a handle and a yoke.

Handle varieties

The handle has a convenient shape for work, it can be made of wood or plastic. There are no specific handle standards. When choosing a tool, you need to take into account the combination of size and weight: the handle should be comfortably covered by the hand, and the fur coat should not outweigh the handle, otherwise it will be difficult to work.

Attaching the nozzle

The cylinder has three types of attachment.

  1. Rigid mount. Such a tool cannot be disassembled; after the fur coat is worn out, the roller becomes unusable.
  2. The presence of a coupling. If necessary, the fur coat is replaced with a new one.
  3. Frame system. This view assumes multiple use of the tool without a kernel.

Rollers with a specific mounting structure are selected based on the preferences of the buyer.

Varieties of materials

A variety of materials makes it possible to choose the right tool for a specific type of work. There are a lot of types of fur coats:

  • foam rubber;
  • fur;
  • velor
  • thread;
  • polyamide;
  • polyacrylic;
  • polyester.

Each type has certain properties and, accordingly, a price.

The fur coat paints evenly, does not leave bubbles, it absorbs a small amount of paint, which is why there is almost no splashing. The only drawback is the separation of fibers that remain on the painted surface.

If there are many cracks that need to be filled with paint, it is advisable to choose a tool with a longer nap. A roller with a velor coat has the same qualities as a fur coat, but leaves no lint. The painted surface remains perfectly flat.

Polyamide can be easily cleaned after use. Due to its resistance to aggressive environments, the coat does not deteriorate, it easily absorbs and gives off any type of paint (even those containing water or synthetic solvents). Polyacryl is considered a lower quality analogue of polyamide, but it also dyes well. However, if different types of paint are applied with a polyamide coat, then for a polyacrylic coat they are recommended only on a water basis.

The easiest staining tool that can be found in hardware stores is foam. It copes well with smooth surfaces, but it is difficult to paint over irregularities. It has a low cost, because if it is bought only once, the option is quite suitable.

With a roller with a thread coat, work quite quickly. Thanks to its relief, it leaves beautiful patterns on the wall.

Separate color option: textured rollers

When you want to create an unusual texture on the wall surface, use textured rollers. For the granulation effect, you will need a fur roller and a special textured paint, which lays down unevenly on the surface. Drawing is done using a special textured roller - stencil.

Which one is better to choose

The working tool must be selected in accordance with the expected result. It is convenient to create beautiful patterns with some types of textured rollers, while others can completely paint over the wall with a ribbed effect. The aggressiveness of the paint used is also taken into account, choosing a fur coat from a suitable material for it.

Stencil with pattern

An interesting option for painting the surface of a room is stencil rollers. Such coats represent a cylinder on which the pattern protrudes.

Stencil sizes from small (for painting small areas) to large (they are used for drawing on). The lines connect smoothly, so you can paint the entire wall without any problems so that there are no visible joints.

The use does not require skill or great effort. The main thing is to adhere to some rules:

  • draw along the wall with a roller without pressing hard, the pace is unhurried;
  • new paint is recruited when the old one is completely over.

Wide with a pattern

The main advantage of wide stencil rollers is quick painting of the area. The stencil roller can be easily matched to the previously applied pattern, which visually creates a sense of a holistic pattern.

Embossed roller for decorative painting

The embossed roller is used to paint the wall with a certain patterned pattern. They are also used to decorate the surface by pushing wet putty. This technique will allow you to get the textured surface of the wall after it dries.

How to choose according to the material used

For a certain one, the appropriate material of the coat is selected. The foam coat is used once, after which it becomes unusable. But for more expensive rollers that are planned to be used in the future, you need to select the paint in accordance with the resistance of the coat material.

How to paint with water-based paint

For painting with water-based paint on flat surfaces, 3 types of rollers are used:

  • foam rubber;
  • thread;
  • nappy.

The most commonly used is thread. The foam coat absorbs a large amount of paint, which affects the quality of work. A thread coat absorbs less of it, which is why the paint lays down more evenly. Choosing the right pile length also matters: the smoother the surface, the shorter it is.

How to paint with acrylic paint

Due to its special texture, acrylic paint is often used in painting, but requires the right tool. The most suitable option is velor. Foam will also work, provided it is of good quality.

For facade, outdoor work, it is recommended to use a roller with a polyacrylic coat. Polyester coats are also suitable for such work in the event that the pile is up to 6 mm, although a pile length of 18 mm is recommended for rough and uneven surfaces.

When choosing a roller in a hardware store, pay attention to some features.

  1. The roller should have a coat suitable for the selected type of paint. It is worth making sure that the material from which the roller coat is made is suitable and will not deteriorate after the first use.
  2. You need to decide, and then choose what size the roller should be.
  3. If you need to apply a drawing on the wall, you need to choose it from the variety of proposed options for drawings. When painting the entire wall, rollers with different coatings are available.

Which roller to choose is up to the buyer's reasoning. The conscious choice of the working tool makes it easier to create the desired effect.

How to make a roller with your own hands

It is not necessary to buy a roller for painting, because you can always make it yourself. Firstly, you do not have to spend money, and secondly, if it concerns a decorative roller, you can create an unusual, unique pattern on the wall.

Decorative

A decorative roller is easy to make at home from available tools. For this, there must be an old unnecessary roller at home. To create a decorative painting on a wall or ceiling, household items are used attached to a roller.

For example, you need a roller and a plastic bag, they are fastened together with tape. It is important that there are as many folds as possible, they will create a unique relief pattern on the surface. Instead of a bag, they also use hair ties, a vegetable net, cloth trimmings, and more.

An interesting option for creating a unique decorative roller at home using foil and acrylic putty. You will need thick foil (such as from under bags of dairy products) and an object with which the pattern will be squeezed out.

With the help of the chosen object, the pattern you like is minted on the foil: geometric shapes, stars, daisies, birds, straight lines, a cell, an interweaving of curving stripes.

If the drawing should not have joints, but merge into a single picture. It is worth first measuring the length of the foil that will be wrapped around the roller, you also need to take into account the layer of putty between the roller and the foil.

It is advisable to apply lines before extruding the pattern, they must have a distance between themselves of at least 5 mm, then the pattern will not merge.

A layer is applied to the back wall of the stamped foil and wrapped around a roller coat to give it a cylindrical shape. The main thing is to do it quickly so that the putty does not have time to harden ahead of time. In the last step, the foil is glued to the roller.

Textured

The production of a factorial bead does not require much effort. An old roller with a foam rubber coat will be textured by the ropes glued to it. Having wrapped them around the cylinder many times, the roller will leave a complex pattern behind. You can also use threads to highlight individual parts of the foam coat.

In the manufacture of a homemade decorative roller, a clerical knife is often used. First, the desired pattern is applied to the foam rubber coat with a marker, after which unnecessary parts are cut off with a knife. The pattern can be very diverse: a cage, stripes, imitation of a brick and so on. This creates a homemade decorative roller.

Using a knife and carbon paper, the same can be done with a rubber coat. The pattern is made based on the desired thickness of the texture of the pattern.

Universal

Making a universal roller is simple. First, a cylinder is taken, for example, from under toilet paper, adhesive tape for removing lint from clothes or a tin beer can. It is pasted over with woolen cloth or thin foam rubber, 1 cm thick, which will absorb the paint. A thick, rigid wire bent with the letter "G" will become a yoke.

The splashes that remain on the ceiling can be painted over when treating the walls. But, for a start, it's worth preparing the paint. The paint tray into which the paint is poured helps to regulate the amount of paint. The roller absorbs the mixture, and the excess is squeezed out on the inclined wall, paint splatter is reduced to a minimum.

Today the roller has become an indispensable tool in repair. Due to the variety of its types, it is possible to make repairs that best meet expectations. The tool is easy to buy at the hardware store, and an old, damaged roller can be given a "second life" using certain methods.

Useful video

The most commonly used equipment for repairs is a conventional roller, since it allows you to work with a large area and at the same time limit the consumption of paints and varnishes, while maintaining the required layer thickness and uniformity of the coating. Before starting to work with this tool, it is necessary to study the technology, roller to achieve the best quality.

However, rollers come in different types, sizes and are made from different materials, each of which is used for a specific type of work and paint. Therefore, in order to carry out high-quality painting of the surface, you need not only to be able to use the tool, but also to choose it correctly.

In most cases, it is better to entrust the repair work to qualified specialists who already have enough practical experience and can guarantee the result. But it is not always possible to hire outside specialists, and you have to. If you do not know how to paint walls with a roller, then before starting work it is better to study special literature or consult a friend who already has similar experience. In any case, you should thoroughly study the technology and strictly adhere to it, even if some things are not entirely clear to you.

Choosing a paint roller

There are several different types of paint that are used for certain types of surfaces. In this regard, it becomes necessary to use different types of rollers for effective work. In order to, it is necessary to study the main types of rollers and understand for what purposes they are used. According to the type of material used in the manufacture and field of application, all rollers are conventionally divided into several main types:

  • foam rubber;
  • fur;
  • filamentous;
  • velor.

Foam rollers can be called a universal product because they can be used. They are most effectively used to work with various varnishes, as well as water-based or adhesive-based paints. It is impossible to use a foam rubber product to work with emulsion or oil paints, since the solvents that make up their composition destroy the foam rubber and the tool quickly becomes unusable.

Fur tools are also used on ceilings. Suitable for working with enamels and oil-based paints. These products differ from their counterparts in high wear resistance and long service life. This tool effectively works on surfaces that have small depressions or cracks, since the fur base allows you to penetrate all the irregularities and apply an even layer. Before you paint the walls with a roller, pay attention to this type of tool.

Thread rolls are suitable for working with most types of paints and varnishes. Their main feature is the ability to easily clean the tool from the working mixture and reuse it with another type of paint, but they also have their drawbacks. Due to the use of threads in the manufacture, the dye is splashed and it is necessary to have a lot of experience in order to properly cover the surface without spoiling the surrounding objects.

A velor roller will be the best option for beginner painters. It is used to work with emulsion and oily substances, but it does not absorb the working mixture poorly and requires its constant renewal. It is usually used for decorative purposes, as it provides an even and smooth layer of dye.

By design, the rollers can be divided into three main types:

  • front;
  • textured;
  • combined.

The front roller is designed to work from the outside of the building and its internal mechanism has a special bearing, which is specially installed to reduce the speed and prevent splashing of the working mixture.

Textured products can be made from various materials, such as:

  • rubber;
  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • silicone.

In some cases . Such products are intended for applying paints and varnishes to the surface to be treated and at the same time creating textured elements in the form of patterns, ornaments or randomly arranged geometric shapes. Such rollers are used for decorative purposes for finishing.

Preparation for painting

Before applying paint with a roller, you must provide yourself with additional accessories to achieve maximum quality. Such accessories can be:

When choosing a tool for the job, pay attention to the material and surface quality. For example, for smooth surfaces, you can use a roller with a fine pile, but if the surface has a large texture, then the pile should be of medium or long length for thorough staining of all depressions and bulges. When painting surfaces with glossy paints, it is better to use a tool with fine nap and good quality, since on low-quality products, the nap begins to fall out and stick to the surface, which negatively affects the aesthetic appearance.

Painting process

Before painting the walls with a roller, it is necessary to protect the surrounding space from accidental ingress of the working substance with a special construction film. You also need to wear protective clothing, goggles, gloves, a hat, and a respirator. If possible, it is recommended to provide adequate ventilation to remove toxic fumes.

It starts from the top, gradually moving to the lower sections. Before work, it is necessary to conditionally divide the work area into sections and process each of them separately. The roller must be lowered into a container with paint and soaked well with a working substance. Then it is necessary to roll out the tool on a special corrugated surface in the container, this will ensure an even distribution of the coloring matter over the surface of the tool and remove excess mixture, preventing splashing.

When painting large surfaces, the roller should move from top to bottom with a slight diagonal offset. This is done so that each next colored stripe overlaps part of the previous one and does not form clear divisions.

Video on how to paint with a roller:

To achieve the maximum quality of the final result, you must remember the basic rule - it is better to apply several thin layers than one thick one. Apply the paint material evenly, rolling the roller over the surface as much as possible. After the first layer has been applied, you need to give it time to dry well and then proceed with the application of the second layer, and then the third, if necessary.

After finishing painting, the tool must be cleaned from the working substance with running water or a solvent, depending on the type of working mixture used.

Conclusion

It is almost mandatory to provide for the use of paint to update some areas of the room. The painting process can involve the use of a variety of tools and equipment, ranging from a conventional paint brush to spray guns. The choice of tool directly depends on the type of paint used, the technology of its application and the area to be treated. Try to strictly observe safety precautions at work and technology - this will be a guarantee of a high-quality result.

Repair is a long-term event that requires thorough preparation, financial and time costs, as well as the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge. Staining is one of the most common and effective tricks for decorating surfaces. A huge variety of colors and shades, application techniques and textures give plenty of fantasy to roam. However, behind the seeming simplicity of this finishing option, many nuances are hidden: what paint to choose, how to properly treat the surface, how to apply the color scheme so that the color lays down evenly, and annoying streaks and unpainted places do not spoil the overall look of the project and the nerves of the would-be painter.

You can use a variety of tools to paint walls, such as brushes, an airbrush, or a roller.

Roller - the golden mean between them... Has a large number of modifications and options for rollers. Prokras guarantees almost perfect, moderate paint consumption. Ease of use, ease of maintenance and optimal cost create an ideal combination of price and quality. In addition, with the help of this device, you can apply a decorative pattern, stencil drawing and even add texture.

Features of the device

A paint roller is a device of a simple design, consisting of a handle and a curved frame, on which paint cylinders with different surfaces are attached. The principle of its action is the absorption of various substances when the drum is immersed in them and the transfer of these compounds to the surface to be painted.

Roller advantages:

  • surface processing speed;
  • the quality of work on applying the composition;
  • the ability to add additional effects to the processed plane;
  • reducing the amount of materials consumed;
  • large lineup.

Progress does not stand still, and today you can easily find such options for the execution of this tool as a roller for painting corners or a roller with an extended handle for painting ceilings and high facades. Special attention should be paid to rollers with automatic or piston feeding of the coloring substance. This tool is ideal for large flat surfaces. It is used not only when it is necessary to apply paint, but also for other substances - adhesives, varnishing, liquid wallpaper, primer. The choice of roller modification will be almost entirely based on the characteristics of the applied fluid.

When changing the substance, it is only necessary to change the surface of the roller, and the roller is ready for use again. But here it is important to take into account that the roller coat can be made of various materials: fur, foam rubber, polyester, polyacrylic, felt, rubber, wool, nylon.

To study all the tricks when choosing a fur coat, you need to take into account the features of various types of coatings, as well as recommendations for their use.

Views

Since there are a great many types of rollers in the store, it is worth understanding the criteria for their selection.

Let's decide on the principle of the roller.

  • Habitual submersible.
  • With a piston paint supply system - its handle comes with a reservoir that can hold half a liter of the substance at once. The substance evenly wets the rotating surface of the roller.
  • With automatic dye supply. The device pays for its high cost exclusively over a large space. It is characterized by high productivity and economy of consumables, since this device is a device with a dispenser.

There are two principles of its work:

  • the substance enters through the hose when using the pump;
  • the roller is located in the cavity, and already from it the working surface of the drum is wetted.

By the nature of the work, rollers are:

  • for the exterior (more rigid and reinforced);
  • for interior work (smaller).

The tool is distinguished by the type of roller coating:

  • Fur- a universal tool for painting walls. Saves paint, applies layers evenly, paints over uneven and rough surfaces well, is accurate in work (there is a minimum of splashes from it). They can be made of natural fur or synthetic analogs (polyacryl, polyamide), which also differ in the length of the villi. There is a rule: the more roughness, the longer the pile. One "but" - the villi remain on the treated surface.
  • Foam - applicable for a very limited set of paints and varnishes. Differs in the lowest cost, but short-lived, sloppy (too much splashes), poorly stains irregularities, inconvenient in large areas. It is not recommended to paint the walls with them - there are too many drips. The higher its density, the more durable the roller will be.

  • Velor- used for painting, varnishing. Dense staining, however, this is a tool for professionals. Working with it is sloppy, characterized by a large amount of splashes. The consumption of substances is slightly increased due to the absorption of the roller surface. The cost is relatively low.
  • Thread or rag - can be used in work with any paints, are durable, but they spray a lot of material, so you should be careful.
  • Flock and others with smooth surface - only used for smooth, well-prepared surfaces. Strong and durable, have a low cost.

Wall painting can be carried out not only by painting, but also by applying a pattern or texture with decorating devices with a pattern protruding on their surface.

The rollers are subdivided according to the height of the villi:

  • High pile... Hair height 18-22 mm. Ideal for working with masonry, plastered, concrete surfaces.
  • Medium pile. Hair height 11-12 mm. They are used when working with plasterboard, wooden areas, as well as with concrete and plaster. Able to absorb paint well. It is possible to carry out work in a high humidity environment.
  • Short pile... Hair height 5-6 mm. Used for varnishing and dyeing wood and metal surfaces. The paint is used sparingly.

It is worth choosing the right roller width.They come in three sizes.

  • Short. Size - 8-10 cm, diameter - 10-15 mm. Suitable for processing small areas, hard-to-reach places.
  • Average... Size - 15-20cm, diameter - up to 20-90mm. Convenient when processing floor, wall, ceiling surfaces.
  • Long... Size - from 25 cm, diameter - from 80 mm. It is characterized by reinforced fasteners, improved nozzle materials. Positioned as a tool for professionals.

Rollers are distinguished by the way the roller is positioned on the handle. There are models with a hairpin, replaceable with a fur coat, frame shock-absorbing.

If in your plans there is no work on painting a huge number of square meters, the design of the roller will not play a role - you can safely take any one.

Which to choose?

If you started painting work, you need to choose the right not only paints and varnishes, but also a certain type of fixtures. When choosing a roller, you should familiarize yourself with the recommendations of manufacturers and sellers about the optimality of one or another option. The best-selling rollers for interior work are foam rollers. Foam rubber is a material that is absolutely not resistant to aggressive compounds, oil and alkyd paints. The only thing it is ideal for is water-based paints and adhesives, a primer.

But for working with oil, latex paint and enamels, silicate paints and varnishes, fur rollers are perfectly adapted. The shorter the length of the villi, the smoother the surface to be treated should be.

Also, for those who are not afraid of aggressive substances, universal velor rollers are suitable. They can be used not only for water-based paints, but also for oil, alkyd, two-component paints. To apply these compositions, you can use nozzles made of synthetics, natural wool, threads with polyacrylic. To add texture, you should take a tool with a silicone coating, long nap or rubber pad.

Another important factor when choosing this tool is the quality of the fur coat: the firmware must be even, the presence of retaining rings is important. The main thing to look for when choosing a roller is workmanship. There should be no threads sticking out of the fur coat, the stitching should be even, and there are also retaining rings. It is also worth checking for the manufacturer's markings.

Surface preparation

Preparing a surface for painting is a process that is often more time-consuming than painting itself, but it is very important. It is worth observing all the technology, without excluding any stages.

  • Remove previous surface coating. Peeling loose parts of the old paint will deteriorate the overall appearance of the work and peel off the already new paint. Whitewash or water-based paint can be removed without much difficulty - moisten the surface to be treated abundantly, then go through with a spatula. Remove residues with a damp cloth. Waterproof paint is capricious, you will have to work with a metal brush to remove it.
  • Next, you should wet the surface and, after waiting a little, open the windows for a draft. The coating should peel off and can be removed with a spatula. Another way: apply wallpaper glue or paste to the old paint, glue newspapers on it, and let it dry. By removing the layer of paper, you can remove the previous coating along with it. The third method is removal with a drill, but then a huge layer of dust on the surface cannot be avoided.

  • Putty the surface if necessary. When removing the top layer, you can assess the condition of the base of the working surface, check for cracks, voids and irregularities that should be covered with putty.
  • Sand all irregularities well with sandpaper. There is a nuance with the oil-glue putty - it discolors the water-based paint.
  • Prime with starting and finishing primer. To work in a residential area, you can only use an alkyd, acrylic and mineral primer, other compounds are prohibited. The alkyd mixture is absolutely contraindicated for plasterboard and plaster surfaces.
  • Clean the surface from traces of dust, dirt, grease stains. The simplest method is washing with a water-soap composition without abrasives. Plastered surfaces are checked for the possibility of chalking - if chalk marks are visible when you hold your hand, it is worth re-treating this area with a universal primer.

Surface preparation work must be carried out carefully in order for the paint to lay down more efficiently and evenly.

Dyeing

  • The procedure for carrying out painting work is established. First of all, the ceiling is painted, then the walls and floor.
  • Masking tape marks the boundaries of the painting.
  • When painting the ceiling, you should start by applying a border about 5 centimeters in size without going over to the wall. If there are ceiling cornices, then they are painted second. When painting walls, the border is applied in the corners, near windows and doors. A section of the surface from one of these places is painted over vertically with a width of one meter. Then, overlapping it, paint the adjacent area. You need to apply paint in the direction of the light.

It is convenient to paint flat surfaces of a large area using a hand tool - a roller. Products represent a plastic or wooden cylinder on which a fur coat made of a certain material is fixed. The cylinder has a through hole in which the handle is inserted.

The modern construction market offers a huge number of paint rollers of various types and sizes. The products differ in the materials from which the fur coat is made. To choose the right tool, you need to know some subtleties.

The cheapest option is paint rollers with a foam coat. They can be used to apply water-based paints. The tool can be used for priming and wallpapering. As for emulsion formulations, such a roller will not work. Foam products are not recommended for painting the ceiling, as the applied layer will be uneven. The only advantage of the foam roller is its low cost. Among the disadvantages, one can note the formation of a large amount of splashes during operation and a short service life.

Fur rollers can be used with any kind of paint. Products do not absorb too much, so they do not splash during work. Thanks to this feature, the layer is uniform and bubble-free. In addition, fur options fill small cracks, chips and other recesses with paint. The only drawback is that the property of the material will separate from the fur coat. This is especially true for cheap products that leave a lot of fibers on the painted surface.

Roller with fur coat

Velor in terms of color quality is in no way inferior to fur, and in terms of layer uniformity, they even surpass them. The surface painted with such a tool becomes perfectly smooth after drying. But at the same time, it is recommended to use a velor product only for experienced craftsmen who know all the intricacies of working with this type of tool. This coat is perfect for varnishing coatings.

A thread roller for painting walls is used in cases where the speed of work is a fundamental factor. In terms of performance, the product is practically no different from the two previous types, but at the same time it costs a little less. When working with such a tool, do not run it too quickly along the wall, so as not to splatter everything around with paint. It should be noted that a good embossed pattern on the fur coat is imprinted on the walls.

A polyamide roller is used for any type of paint, including materials that contain synthetic solvents or regular water. Polyamide absorbs well and gives off paint, it is easy to clean after use. In addition, this material is resistant to various aggressive environments, so it will last for a long time. The pile length and texture allow not only painting surfaces, but also masking small defects and creating a relief coating.

Walls and ceilings can be painted with a roller with a polyacrylic coat. It is recommended to use the tool only with water-based paints, as components made from other materials can damage the coat prematurely. Polyacryl is a cheap analogue of polyamide, and the quality of the material is much worse. Rollers made of it are suitable for painting smooth surfaces or coatings with small defects.

Another inexpensive tool based on synthetic fibers is a roller with a polyester fur coat. The product quickly breaks down, but at the same time it is cheap, so it is recommended to buy it for one-time work.

Roller size

There are types of rollers for painting surfaces that differ in size. In this case, only the dimensions of the cylinder itself are taken into account, and the handle can be any. On this basis, tools are:

  • Mini. In this case, we are talking about a cylinder with a diameter of not more than 9 cm and a maximum height of 15 cm. Most often, products are used for finishing hard-to-reach surfaces or coatings with a small area.
  • Midi. The diameter remains the same - 9 cm, and the height is slightly higher - up to 20 cm. Such tools are considered universal and are recommended for home decoration. With their help, you can quickly paint the walls, despite the fact that the rollers themselves weigh a little.
  • Maxi. As the name implies, such products are large in size. Their length reaches 30 cm, and the diameter is 8 cm. This type of roller belongs to a professional tool, so the cost is appropriate. Most often, the product is used for facade work.

Some craftsmen buy a maxi-sized roller right away to speed up the interior finishing, but this is not the best solution. The fact is that such a tool absorbs a significant amount of paint, therefore it becomes very heavy. At the same time, the area of the inner walls is not enough to transfer all the absorbed paint to the surface, and the tool will remain heavy throughout the entire work. Better not to rush, but paint everything with midi and mini rollers.

For staining outside, on the contrary, it is not recommended to use the first two options. The fact is that their diameters are larger than those of the maxi, so the paint is better sprayed, which is why it is impossible to work quickly. Outside, the paint dries very quickly, so the speed of application is very important.

On this basis, tools are divided into the following groups:

  1. For interior work. They are small, lightweight products.
  2. Facade. They are large and equipped with a bearing that stops the roller if the speed is too high.
  3. Textured. They can be made from various materials: rubber, plastic, metal, fur and so on. With its help, they create relief patterns when using decorative plasters.
  4. Presser. These are rubber products, with the help of which adhesives are applied to the surface and air bubbles from under the wallpaper are removed.
  5. Needle-like. They are used for perforating drywall and removing old wallpaper.
  6. Paneled. Used for decorative painting without a stencil. Today, such a tool is almost impossible to find.

Features of the choice of a roller for walls and ceilings

Now about which roller is better to paint the walls. It is better to choose rollers of medium size, with a large comfortable handle. The length of the pile and the material of the coat depend only on the type of paint used, but do not play a role as such. If you need a high quality coating, it is recommended to purchase a roller with a velor fur coat. If you are planning a regular cosmetic repair, and the tool is no longer useful, it is better to purchase a foam roller.

As for painting the ceiling, in this case it is better to buy a product with a short and medium-sized handle. The pile length should be medium so that the roller can absorb the working material without splattering it. Additionally, with a roller, you must purchase a special painting tray or prepare a sheet of material that does not absorb the coloring composition. The fact is that the paint cannot be rolled over the surface of the ceiling, and therefore these products are needed.

Now the question of which roller to paint the walls or ceiling will not arise. Follow the guidelines above when choosing a tool. Remember that oversaving can lead to poor surface quality and the need to redo the work.
