The sequence of actions is as follows:

Replacing damaged glass with your own hands is easy. The main thing is to responsibly approach the process of choosing materials and the installation of glass in the opening of the door structure.

Replacing glass in an interior door is not considered a particularly difficult task, but it must be done accurately and accurately. A fragile insert requires skills in handling the material and appropriate tools, so it is better to order cutting from specialists. Trade construction organizations provide such services directly when buying glass decor.

Glass inserts are most often changed for the following reasons:

  1. Broken glass must be removed, even if it did not fall out. A sudden movement when closing the curtain will lead to possible injury to people.
  2. The aging of decorative inserts is reflected in their appearance and also often leads to replacement.
  3. Installing glass doors in your living room is an easy way to freshen up your interior. The repair option includes only the replacement of glass in the canvas or changing the size of the frame.
  4. The glass insert may be accidentally soiled or scratched. You can replace the glass if it's easier than putting it in order.

preliminary stage

To repair a damaged door with a glass panel, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work. Before installing a new insert:

  • remove protruding fragments from the frame (most often they are easy to remove with little effort);
  • remove the canvas from the hinges and lay it on a flat surface;
  • inspect the door and try to determine the method of mounting the insert;
  • if the glass is not broken, then dismantle it.

In old apartments, glass was inserted into the door frame using putty. To repair interior doors and replace broken glass, you need to pry off the glazing bead holding the insert with a knife or screwdriver. After that, pull out the nails with pliers, remove the glass part and clean the opening from the remnants of paint and putty.

To work, you need to prepare tools:

  1. glass cutter;
  2. a hammer;
  3. small nails;
  4. silicone sealant.

It is often necessary to replace the glazing beads. You can buy them at the hardware store, in the lumber department.

Kinds

Door glazing is produced using different types of material:

  • transparent - often complemented by pasting with decorative films with drawings imitating stained glass;
  • matte - rarely requires additional finishing;
  • with a pattern, corrugated and stained glass - are decorative types of glass, it is better to entrust their cutting to specialists;
  • tinted or mirrored.

Material selection

Frosted or corrugated glass is used where the view of the room from the outside is undesirable: in the bathroom, bathroom, bedroom. These types of material are thicker than transparent window glass: it reaches 4-6 mm. A home master will not always be able to cope with cutting on his own. Therefore, after dismantling the old glass, it is recommended to measure the opening for insertion and order a replacement in the workshop of a construction company.

For the living room, decorative glass for doors is more often selected: with an engraved pattern, made using complex technology and surface treatment with a sandblasting unit, stained glass, consisting of colored pieces connected together. If desired, you can use both corrugated and frosted glass, if the interior design is not particularly luxurious or is made in a minimalist style.

Both transparent and any other can be installed in the kitchen. A budget option is a simple window glass pasted over with a film, or decorative curtains on a glazed structure.

Options to replace

If it is not possible to quickly insert decorative glass into the door instead of the broken one, there is an option to replace it with other materials. For temporary insertion, you can use:

  1. plywood or fiberboard, pasted over with a film that fits the veneered surface of the canvas;
  2. plexiglass (monolithic polycarbonate);
  3. window glass with stained glass film.

These materials are not the best decor for the door, so in the future you will have to make repairs again and insert new glass into the opening.

How to replace glass in an interior door

In economy class doors, the insert is removed and installed from above, through a special groove. Silicone sealant serves as a sealant: do not forget to clean the frame well from its remnants. Before replacing the glass part, you need to find out its dimensions.

Glass in inexpensive models has a rectangular shape, so it is enough to determine the dimensions of the glass opening in terms of width and length. When taking measurements, it is important not to forget about the allowances that are needed to fasten the insert in the grooves. Measuring the allowance is simple: slide the ruler into the groove. Add the resulting value to the length and width of the opening.

It is advisable to cut the glass as precisely as possible so that it easily fits into the mounting gaps. Before installing the glass in the interior door, fill the grooves with sealant.

Doors of a more complex design will have to be disassembled to replace the glass. To do this, you need to find bolts on the sides, closed with special decorative plugs. By unscrewing the bolts, you can remove part of the canvas and remove the insert. Measurements to be made taking into account allowances.

Inserting glass into a kitchen door with a panel, the master must find the dowels in the upper and lower parts of the canvas. They need to be removed and 1 side of the frame removed. Pull the glass panel out of the groove, take measurements and cut out a replacement part. Assemble the structure in reverse order. Put the dowels on the glue.

How to insert rectangular glass

Rectangular inserts can also be found in the interior or kitchen doors of old apartments, and in expensive products in new buildings. Inserting glass into an old-style door is easy:

  • after dismantling the glazing bead and cleaning the recesses, measure the opening taking into account the groove;
  • cut a rectangle to size and insert it into the opening, applying a little sealant there;
  • install the glazing bead in place and secure with nails.

Inexpensive plastic, laminated and veneered products come with inserts on fasteners with glazing beads. In such a case, the repair is carried out as indicated for the old-style doors, removing the strips along the perimeter of the opening on only one side of the door. It is advisable to keep the nails that fasten the bead and use it when installing the planks in place. To prevent rattling of the newly inserted glass, before the procedure, silicone sealant should be applied to the recess between the blade and the slats.

Options for doors of complex design sometimes include non-removable fasteners: a groove with hidden wedges. Such a product will have to be taken to the workshop for a branded replacement: it is impossible to do it yourself. According to user reviews, repairing a complex structure with hidden fixation is more expensive than buying another door, so it makes sense to ask the sales assistant for details in advance.

Installation of non-standard forms yourself

Manufacturers produce unusual models of doors with glass of complex shape. They are beautiful, but their repair will not do without the help of a specialist. Do-it-yourself replacement of glass in an interior door should be started by inspecting the fastening of the insert: if it is too complicated, then you should immediately call the master to the house. But if there are removable elements, as a rule, you can replace the insert yourself:

  1. Remove the door from its hinges and place it on a sheet of cardboard. Its size should be sufficient to completely close the opening.
  2. Outline the opening as accurately as possible, do not forget to allow for installation allowances.
  3. The template must be cut and tried on in the opening. It must fit exactly the size of the frame.
  4. A template for glasses of complex shape must be taken to the cutting workshop.
  5. It remains to put the finished parts into the grooves, smeared with sealant, and secure with decorative overlays.

in sliding structures

A sliding door can consist of a large glass sheet and a thin frame around the perimeter or look like a swing door: with inserts in a wooden or plastic panel. In any case, the canvas must be removed from the awnings and laid on the floor. An assistant is required to remove a heavy object from the profile grooves to slide the sashes.

If the door consists of a frame and glass, then you will need to disassemble it completely. Bolts can be found on the edge of the framing structure and removed. The edge of the glass is protected by a silicone seal, which must be removed and stored if not damaged. If the integrity of the material is violated, it is ordered together with a glass door.

Take measurements along the length and width of the canvas. It does not shatter into fragments, but only becomes covered with cracks, so it is easy to cope with the task. When ordering glass in a workshop, you need to clarify that a material with a protective film (or triplex, as for car windows) is required. After receiving the ordered product, it remains to insert it into the frame, after putting the seal on the edges. When mounting, cut off the silicone tape so that it is 5 mm smaller than the glass on each side.

When installing a glass element between MDF panels, the canvas is assembled on a horizontal surface. To install glass, linings are most often used, which are attached to nails. When mounting the insert and hammering small fasteners into a wooden door, you must be careful not to break the glass: one wrong move will lead to a second repair. Raise the assembled door leaf and place it in the sliding door profile rails.

From this article you will learn how to replace the glass in the interior door with your own hands. And we will also describe in which cases it is better not to do this yourself without experienced specialists.

Glazed doors are an adornment of any interior. In addition to an attractive appearance, the glass in the door also has a practical function: it visually expands the size of the room and lets in additional light.

Due to their fragility, glass door elements often break or crack. If you decide to change the broken glass in the door leaf with your own hands, then you must first find out the degree of complexity of the work ahead.

Replacing glass in interior doors leaves you with two options: contact the masters or make the replacement yourself. With the first method, everything is clear: they found a phone number, called, the master arrived and did everything. You were satisfied, but paid money (sometimes a lot).

So, what is the plan for replacing glass in an interior door with your own hands:

  1. We take out the remains of the broken glass from the door.
  2. We make measurements for a new glass element.
  3. We order or buy new glass.
  4. We prepare the door leaf for inserting new glass.
  5. We insert and fix the glass in the interior door.

And now we will analyze all these points in detail.

The answer is unequivocal - carefully!

For this procedure, you will need the following tools and tools:

  • Tight, but not too thick gloves.
  • Chisel or wide slotted screwdriver.
  • Little mallet.
  • Thick paper.
  • Broom and shovel.

We put on gloves and with the help of a hammer and a chisel (screwdriver) we loosen the fasteners - glazing beads. We don't take them out until the end.

Important! In order to safely remove the remnants of broken glass from the door, the glazing beads must first be loosened from the top.

Now carefully remove the glass fragments. You should start with the largest ones. After removing them, immediately put them in prepared paper and wrap them. Now you can remove the fasteners.

If there is a rubberized gasket into which the glass is inserted, inspect it carefully. It may be damaged. In this case, you may need to purchase a new gasket tape.

If some parts of the glass fell to the floor and broke, then we collect them with a broom in a scoop. Try not to leave a single piece on the floor. All work is best done in slippers with hard soles or other shoes.

We measure the opening for new glass

There are also two options here: call a glazier or take measurements yourself. If the broken glass had a complex shape, then it is better to use the first option.

Moreover, it is better to call the master from the workshop, in which this glass will be cut out immediately. With the correct and uncomplicated glass shapes, you will be able to independently remove the desired dimensions.

You can buy glass in hardware stores or special workshops where they cut products. Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of products with different relief patterns, levels of transparency, shade or resistance to damage. If children live in the house, then it is important to purchase glass for an interior door with high impact resistance.

The peculiarity of calculating the parameters of the insert object is to measure the doorway. To this indicator, you will need to add a few millimeters of depth to insert the product. All measurements are best done using a ruler to determine the exact bed distance. Otherwise, the dimensions will be inaccurate, making installation impossible.

Important! Glass should never fit snugly into its box! That is, its dimensions should be less than the bed by 1.5-2 mm on each side.

Acquisition of new glass for interior doors

You can order or buy new door glass in specialized workshops for cutting glass and mirror products. Or you can go to the building supermarket where the door was bought and make a purchase (order) there.

To do-it-yourself replacement of glass in the door structure, you should stock up on suitable tools and mi. These include:

  • gloves to protect hands from cuts and abrasions;
  • also, in order to replace broken glass, a chisel may come in handy;
  • when inserting the latest glass, you will need a hammer, you can use both carpentry and special furniture;

    Design option for an interior door with glass

  • sealing paper should also be at hand, it will be needed to adjust the size of the glass and its strong fastening in the door structure;
  • silicone is also useful for strong fixation, regardless of whether ordinary glass is installed or decorative;
  • it is also worth having a broom and a dustpan on hand to sweep away excess chips and glass residues from the door frame.

This is a small set of tools that should be at hand at the time of self-replacement of glass in interior doors.

Glass replacement in interior doors

Modern interior doors can have a unique design and, as a result, a complex structure.

In this case, you should not even think about replacing the broken glass sheet without the help of others. In some door structures, such an operation can only be carried out at a special enterprise.

How to insert rectangular glass

You can replace the broken rectangular glass sheet in the interior doors of the economy class on your own.

Usually the glass sheet in such door structures is installed through the top.

Repair actions include the following steps:

  1. fragments are carefully removed from the door;
  2. the place where the glass sheet must be installed is measured;
  3. in the workshop, glass is ordered, of the appropriate dimensions and suitable thickness;
  4. the finished glass is carefully inserted on top of the interior door;
  5. for strengthening, silicone gel is used, which is applied around the perimeter of the glass;
  6. when the gel dries, it is necessary to remove smudges.

When measuring the place in which a new glass sheet will stand, it is imperative to measure the depth of the groove.

This value must be added to the acquired dimensions. The depth of the groove is set by lowering an iron ruler into it.

If the glass sheet is fastened with a "glazing bead", then measurements and installation are carried out in the same way. Only the "glazing bead" is previously removed from the door structure. At the end of the repair work, it should be attached to its original place. Fastening is done with small carnations.

Repair of business class interior doors

Replacing the glass sheet in interior doors of this type is a rather labor-intensive process.

As a rule, these doors have a collapsible design. And in order to remove from them the warped glass part, the door structure needs to be completely disassembled, replace the glass, and later assemble it again. Such work can only be done by a specialist. Traditionally, it is created in a special workshop.

If we are talking about repairing a door structure from another, for example, aluminum, then there are difficulties here. If the glass sheet is inserted into the duralumin door in the same way as in the economy class door, and fastened in the manner of a “glazing bead” with an duralumin bar, then the replacement can be made.

But, direct contact of the alloy with the glass surface is undesirable. Therefore, when installing, it is worth using a rubber gasket. If the glass sheet is built into the door structure, then it can be replaced only in a special service company.

Replacement of unusual glasses

Glass sheets in interior door structures, made in a modern design style, may take different forms. It's great if they are oval, worse when the glass is made in the shape of a wave.

However, if the replacement of the glass sheet is done through the top, then you can try to do this:

  1. carefully remove the fragments;
  2. collect them on a large sheet of paper, putting each in its place;
  3. circle the glass around the contour with a marker;
  4. now you can order a glass sheet and insert it into the door structure.

Glass for interior doors

Glasses can be different in shape and production technology.

These reasons affect the price.

According to the technology of glass production there are:

  • colored;
  • transparent;
  • bronze;
  • transparent with facet;
  • satin with facet;
  • with fusing;
  • corrugated.

Prices for glass sheets may be different.

  • If we are talking about transparent glass, then its approximate cost can be from 1000 rubles. for 1 sq. m.
  • Matte can cost from 1600 rubles. for 1 sq. m.
  • The price of a glass sheet with a matte sandblasted pattern starts from 2800 rubles. for 1 sq. m.
  • Corrugated can be purchased at a cost of 2500 rubles.

    for 1 sq. m.

  • Stained glass can be purchased at a cost of 8000 rubles. for 1 sq. m.

Fixing glass with glazing beads

Very often, glass in interior doors is installed using glazing beads, which are attached to ordinary decorative nails. In this case, the work of replacing the glass in the doors will be ordinary and swift, which you can handle on your own.

To get the glass, you need to carefully pull out the nails, take away the glazing beads and, voila, the glass is in your hands. We insert a new one into the vacated gap and return the glazing beads to their place. So that at the moment of opening or closing the doors, the inserted glass does not rattle, apply transparent silicone to the glass clearance.

Replacing glass in veneered doors

If you got a Russian-made veneered door, and the economy class door itself, then you can breathe a sigh of relief, the door glass is simply inserted from above.

We take it out, measure the clearance, order a new beautiful glass and carefully insert it. As soon as the glass is inserted, it is imperative to coat the gap between the glass and its lining with silicone. This will prevent the glass in the doors from rattling when you use them. If smudges come out - it doesn’t matter, they are simply removed with a clean rag.

Replacing glass in collapsible doors

Most often collapsible doors belong to business class doors. To replace the glass, you will have to disassemble the door itself. On the sides of the door leaf we find bolts under the rivets and unscrew them. Traditionally, the bolts are at the top and bottom.

Before this, first remove the door from the hinges, since if the glass is not one, then others can simply get enough sleep.

The main difficulty for you will be to assemble back the elements of the door structure. Be careful not to get twisted.

Otherwise, the door will finish closing normally.

How to replace glass if it is the wrong shape

If you already have some experience in installing glass, then when the glass zigzags or is generally oval, the main difficulty in replacing is to guess the size.

It happens that the glass just cracks and remains in the doorway. In this case, before you get it for you, you must definitely take the dimensions that are redrawn using paper or cardboard.

In this case, the glass layout must be clear. Otherwise, you will have to order it more than once. Consider also the size of the groove, which along the perimeter of the glass opening should be the 1st size. Traditionally, this is 5 millimeters.

Selection

Replacing glass in interior doors can be justified by various reasons, most often this is:

  • Damage. During the operation of the door, the glass insert can be easily destroyed. This is especially true for those who have active kids at home.

    But, it's not just about breaking ability. It can also be scratched or stained. If the problem cannot be eliminated in another way, the only way out is to replace it.

  • Obsolescence. Over time, old glass loses its attractive appearance and may not fit into a modern interior. If you do not want to completely change the door, you can limit yourself to changing the insert.
  • Update. This option is relevant for those who want to change the situation without significant costs. This is not only about repair, but also about a simple desire to correct the interior.

How to replace unnecessary glass in the door?

You can find, suitable in size, the remains of glass at home. Ordinary glasses can be decorated on their own with the help of a film or painting. Purchased options are the safest. Also, embossed ones are often used.

In addition to glass, you can use plastic or plywood sheets, the outer ones are decorated with any means available to you.

Fastening with glazing beads

To begin with, let's see how to change the glass in the panel interior door.

In this case, the insert is attached with glazing beads. In order to remove the old one, they must be carefully pry off and removed together with the carnations. After that, clean off the putty around the perimeter and carefully remove the insert. A fresh fragment is installed in its place, smeared with sealant and pressed with glazing beads.

Now let's look at how to insert glass into the door if you want to increase the area of \u200b\u200bthe decorative element.

First you need to remove all the old parts. Using a jigsaw, cut out the required size hole. Wooden plugs are installed in hollow canvases along the perimeter. In them, you need to select the grooves with a drill, chisel or milling cutter. Next, glass of suitable dimensions is cut out and installed in the manner already described.

In a slightly different way, you can insert glass into a paneled interior door. The highlight of such a canvas is that it consists of many collapsible parts.

Glass in this case - this is the panels. In order to replace them, it is necessary to disassemble the door in detail.

The paneled canvas has the following elements:

  • longitudinal (vertical) support is made of solid wood;
  • the transverse (horizontal) support is also made of wood;
  • panel, that is, the narrowest insert in the free space between the supports;
  • baguette element - decorates the inner perimeter of the insert.

The principle of connection is based on the tongue-and-groove joint.

It is not necessary to remove all parts, the main thing is to open access to the glasses. To do this, it is enough to remove the upper crossbar and slightly push the racks. After the inserts are removed from the structure, fresh ones are cut out according to their shape and size and installed in the same place.

Self-replacement of glass in the interior door

The glass door between the rooms looks extremely advantageous in any interior. But, in addition to beauty, it also performs practical functions. Due to the glass, the size of the room visually expands, and additional light passes into the room. It often happens that you need to replace the glass in the interior door. The reasons for this may be different.

The most common is its damage, the need for a turn, or the desire of the owners to replace the glass with one suitable for a brand new interior design.

The design of the interior door with glass.

How to replace glass in an interior door?

If there are no mirrors, colored stained-glass windows, glass baguettes and other decorations in the interior door, then you can, observing painstaking accuracy and the usual action plan, replace the glass yourself.

To determine the procedure, first you need to find out what kind of interior door you have. That is, it is necessary to realize how glass is attached to it.

In almost all old and almost all modern door models, glass can be inserted into the gap and fixed with ordinary or curly glazing beads. But there is another type of fastening (with a hidden fixation), when it is useful to bring the glass through the end of the door.

When replacing broken glass in an interior door, you must act very carefully so that when working with tools, do not destroy the door, as well as new glass.

Before starting work, it is useful to get rid of old glass, often broken or cracked. It is better to prepare for this by providing yourself with the necessary tools and improvised means:

  • gloves (it is better to take tight ones, but not extremely thick ones);
  • medium-sized hammer;
  • scoop, broom;
  • paper of the highest density;
  • wide slotted screwdriver or chisel.

Fasteners in the form of glazing beads are loosened with a screwdriver (you can also take a chisel), a hammer.

Basically, wear gloves. It is not necessary to remove the fasteners one hundred percent. To be safe, it's best to start at the top. Gradually remove the fragments or glass, start with large ones. Put them in thick paper and immediately wrap them up. After that, the fasteners are removed. If the rubberized gasket is suddenly damaged, it is better to purchase a fresh tape. Make sure that nothing falls off or breaks, and if it does happen, then immediately remove the fragments with a broom and a dustpan. Work better in shoes.

How to replace glass: work steps

To change the glass in the interior door, it is useful to find its clearance.

With a complex shape, it is better to contact the glazier. Although at home you can make a special cardboard pattern. Apply the dimensions you purchased there. Now you can cut a new glass on it. Precise shapes can be handled without outside help. The main thing to remember is that the glass cannot go right into its bed. This means that it is necessary to write down dimensions that will be 1.5-2 mm smaller than the bed for each side.

Fragments of glass must be removed with thick gloves, at first large, then small.

Glass can be purchased either at construction stores, or ordered from a workshop that practices cutting glass and mirrors.

The interior door must be prepared for insertion.

Remove the old gasket from the entire surface of the bed, remove the putty that has served its own time, together with the sealant. Purchase fresh sealant (special for glass and windows) in advance. Glass fixing systems, which depend on the door model, may also come in handy. It may also happen that the glazing bead breaks during dismantling. On sale there is a large selection of flexible analogues of such fasteners, made in different colors.

Glass also needs to be prepared. Let it warm up to room temperature. Then wash it using soap and water. Wipe clean with a clean cotton cloth. So cutting will go easier, while you protect the glass from breaking and crumbs.

Where the place of fastening, remove the remnants of paint and putty.

Remove your door from its hinges and lay it on some horizontal line. A table will do for this. The main thing is that it should be long and wide. So the interior door will be able to lie down completely, therefore, inserting glass in a suspended state is a risky business.

Apply silicone around the entire perimeter of the bed where the glass will lie. Use a caulk gun for this. Place the glass in the gasket tape. After that, start carefully putting it in the door. Eliminate pressure on its surface. If the insert is tight, try notching the gasket.

Treat with silicone sealant and the second part of the glass.

Fastening glazing beads also sit on the sealant, after which they must be tightly fitted to each other.

And later it is better to fix them also to the door leaf. For this purpose for us, take decorative finishing carnations. The sealant sets for about an hour, no less. After that, you can hang the door back.

Each door will have its own aspects. But with the desire and the right approach, replacing glass will not be a difficult task for you. Most importantly, do the work carefully, and everything will work out!

We insert glass into the interior door ourselves

Broken glass in the door of the room is a nasty thing, greatly spoiling the mood and interior of the apartment.

In addition, it is dangerous and fraught with cuts and other injuries. What to do? Painstakingly collect fragments and urgently engage in glass work.

Can't do without a specialist?

True, specialists do not recommend amateurs to master these very works. The design of a modern apartment is so complex and advanced that an amateur will most likely not be able to figure out the design, he will not understand the glass fastening scheme. Even a professional carpenter who is not familiar with the technological news of repair and with the features of your particular model is completely realistic to screw up this job. And you will pay for the glazing twice: to him and to the master for eliminating the marriage.

This is the case if you spent money on a good designer and a precious team of builders and your interior doors are decorated with glass baguettes, ruffles, colored stained-glass windows and mirrors.

If your apartment is the most simple, without bells and whistles and repairs you are used to doing with your own hands, you will not encounter any prohibitive problems in replacing the transparent rectangle between the room and the corridor.

Hopelessness with triplex

To begin with, let's figure out whose production your door is and how glass was attached to its canvas. Therefore, if it is veneered from the Ulyanovsk factory with glass 10 mm wide (with a standard of 4–6), then you still can’t do without contacting the master: this is a triplex, with the replacement of which you cannot cope without the help of others.

Triplex is attached only in the factory floor and is so expensive that it is cheaper to purchase and install a fresh door.

Option 1 (simple)

In Russian veneered economy class doors, glass is simply placed on top. In this case, we breathe a sigh of relief, measure the “vacated” opening with a tape measure or centimeter, go to the workshop, order new glass - and carefully insert it. Lubricate with silicone gel; dries - remove smudges with a cloth.

An important point: do not forget to climb with a ruler inside the cell in which the glass stood and measure the depth needed to fix it. Traditionally, this is a centimeter or two. But if it is not added to the length and width of the future purchase, it will have to be repeated.

Option 2 (also "economy class")

It happens that the glass is fastened with a glazing bead with decorative nails.

In this case, you can also cope with its substitution on your own. We breathe a sigh of relief, measure with a tape measure ... (See the 1st paragraph of the text in the previous subheading. The 2nd, in general, also does not interfere with re-reading). The only difference is that after the broken or cracked glass is removed, the glazing beads are removed, and when a new one is inserted, they are put back and nailed with the same carnations that were originally there.

Option 3 (collapsible)

Suppose you have collapsible business class doors. This option is more difficult. The door will have to be taken apart. To do this, the bolts under the rivets are unscrewed from the sides of the door leaf, from below and from above. The main difficulty is to assemble the door back: distortions are possible!

Option four: if the glass is irregularly shaped

Even ordinary rectangular glass can be inserted when there is some experience in this matter.

If it is oval or generally zigzag ... It is important to guess with the size so that you do not have to take it again and again. It is better to take the dimensions of the broken glass onto cardboard. But the work must be jewelry. The permissible deviation from clear dimensions should not exceed 3–5 mm. And when using paper for removing patterns, it can reach 7 mm ...

In fact, there are even more options. Almost the same as the manufacturers of interior doors. In laminated, for example, from time to time the glass is attached to a glazing bead, which cannot be seen from the outside. Such a door cannot be repaired in general; it is not the glass that will have to be replaced, but its entirety.

But laminated though cheap.

It will be sad if you take on the repair of a designer door and break it completely ... So if you are not convinced of your own glazier's capabilities, it's better to call professionals. Or buy a fresh door. Therefore, there is a certain oddity here: branded door repairs will almost certainly cost you more than installing a new one.

Replacing glass in an interior door: step by step instructions

Broken glass in the interior door? This does not mean that your interior glass doors cannot be restored.

You can completely replace the glass with your own hands, and the door will be like new. It all depends on how brave you are to take on such a job. Working with glass requires certain abilities. You need to follow safety precautions. The ability to perform glass replacement at home depends on which glass was installed first. Important qualities are: the method of fixing the glass and the type of door.

Let's see what can be done in each specific case.

Replacing glass in an interior door: a classic rectangle

The procedure for replacing rectangular glass is not complicated. The main thing is to do everything methodically and according to the instructions.

  • Splinters can be hazardous. Carefully remove the fragments from the door, collect them from the floor. To pull the fragments out of the door, slightly loosen the glazing beads (see below for how to remove the glazing beads). Observe safety precautions: wear work gloves. Reminder: before throwing away broken glass, measure its thickness.
  • Take the door off its hinges and lay it on a flat, level surface.

    If possible, do the work in the workshop, not in the living room.

  • If the glass was fixed on the glazing beads, carefully unscrew the screws that hold them on. If the screws are decorative, keep them. Check ordinary screws for rust and replace unusable ones. Most often, glazing beads are fixed with nails. Then pliers and a chisel will come in handy. With a chisel, pry off the bead and loosen it evenly.

    In this case, the nail head becomes available for gripping with pliers. Thus, remove all the nails and remove the glazing beads.

  • It is better to save decorative glazing beads in order to fix new glass with them. Glazing beads on interior doors are occasionally subject to decay, as is the case on window panes. Difficulties that may occur: scratched or broken glazing beads. Traditionally, scratches can be painted over with varnish. Broken glazing beads can also be glued, and the gluing points can be painted over with varnish or covered with a wax pencil in color.
  • Remove old putty (or sealant) using a chisel, knife or awl.
  • Measure the height and width of the glass opening.

    Make sure the glass is square by measuring the height and width at various points in the opening. With a small error, it can be neglected by specifying the smallest length and width when ordering. The missing density is compensated by silicone and glazing beads. A large error (more than 5 mm) will require the order of glass in the form of a trapezoid. The result and speed of the following work depends on the accuracy of your measurements. Therefore, treat this procedure for us scrupulously.

  • For glass that has been inserted into a groove.

    Add to the height the depth of the cells in which the glass stood at the top and bottom. And to the width add the depth of the cells on the left and right. It is important that the size of the glass be 1-2 mm smaller than necessary, this will facilitate insertion into the grooves. Worse, if you specify a size larger than necessary: the glass will have to be cut.

  • Order glass in a special workshop. Maybe instead of broken glass you want to put frosted glass, print, mirror or stained glass. Look at photos of interior doors with glass in different variations before making a choice.

    When choosing, consider in which room the door is located: you need to insert glass with a film into the nursery.

  • It happens that in the garage there is just a forgotten piece of glass, almost suitable in size. You need to reduce it a little. When cutting glass, be sure to wear safety glasses: even small fragments can severely damage the eyes. At the end of work with glass, carry out painstaking cleaning. After cutting the glass, file the edge with a file.
  • Fasten the glazing beads on one side of the door. Insert glass. If there are grooves, it is better to apply silicone in them in advance for durability and density.

    Fix the glass with glazing beads on the other side.

New glazing beads are best painted in the color of the door. Use stains or a special varnish.

Replacing glass with an increase in the opening

Suppose that after the glass fragments are removed, you want to make a door upgrade: change the shape or size of the doorway. It can completely replace the glass in the interior door with an increase in the opening with your own hands.

folding door

This option is available for self-replacement, if naturally the door design is not very intricate.

The glass replacement process is not complicated. It is difficult to disassemble and reassemble such a door. But if you still dare, proceed as follows.

  • Unscrew all screws.
  • Carefully disassemble the design. If there are a lot of parts, draw an assembly diagram. You can also stack the parts in a certain order, so as not to get confused during assembly.
  • Measure, order and insert new glass (or glass).
  • Assemble the structure again.

Sometimes the design of a door can be quite a puzzle. It's best to set the difficulty before you start the disassembly process. Therefore, you risk doing more harm than doing better.

It is better to order the experts to insert glass into the interior door. The cost of the question will be less than if the specialists fix your unqualified repair.

Sliding interior door

To replace the glass or mirror in a sliding door, you will also need to disassemble the entire door. And again, if you are not fully convinced of your own abilities, entrust the process to professional sliding door assemblers. If you want to complete the entire process of substitution on your own, be sure to do it with a partner.

  1. First remove the door from the profile grooves.
  2. The glass or mirror in the sliding door is protected by a special film.

    This simplifies its removal, as the fragments do not crumble. Carefully measure the broken glass and order a replacement (be sure to indicate the presence of a protective film in the order). In addition to glass, it may be useful to order a silicone seal for insertion if the old one is out of order.

  3. When putting the seal on the glass, remember the rule: it should be 5 mm shorter than the width of the mirror. To do this, freeze in advance and cut off the appropriate length.
  4. If the glass is installed between other types of filler (chipboard or MDF), connect these types to each other on a horizontal surface.
  5. The horizontal profile must be filled into the assembled filling with a mallet.

    Proceed with caution! It is not uncommon for glass to break during this process.

The installation of the vertical profile and rollers is done according to the usual scheme for assembling sliding doors.

What is impossible to do on your own

Types of glass that are difficult or impossible to install at home: triplex, glass with photo printing, some types of stained glass. Naturally, almost everything depends on the size of the glass and the difficulty of fixing it. But the main reason is not even in the fastening, but in the cost of these types of glass. An unskilled approach to installation is fraught with broken glass and foreign exchange costs.

Another option that is problematic to perform at home.

The glass is fixed in the door with the help of hidden wedges, which are inserted into a special groove. This is the so-called hidden glass fixation. The process of extracting wedges is best left to specialists.

On your own, you cannot replace glass in a radius door, corrugated or intricately shaped. Such a replacement will have to be ordered from professionals. The work is not done at home. From time to time, only the manufacturer will be able to insert glass into the interior door.
