Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Russian (Choose Voyevoda). Uncanonical - victorious for the chosen governor

Among the many prayers used by Orthodox Christians to appeal to the Divine Powers, many often choose akathists. This is a special hymn, the text of which fills the soul with warmth, joy and God's love. That is why their reading is so loved by believers. The most ancient and famous of all texts is the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos "The Chosen Governor".

What is an akathist

Translated from Greek the term itself means singing during which one does not sit. In form, it is a thankful and laudatory appeal to the Lord God, His Blessed Mother or any saint.

Interesting. The first of the written canonical akathists was precisely the text of the Chosen Governor, addressed to the Most Holy Theotokos.

Akathist to the Mother of God in front of her icon

It was on the basis of this laudatory appeal to the Mother of God that, over time, other songs began to be composed, already addressed to both the Lord God himself and his saints. It was in Russia that the reading of akathists gained special love - our people eagerly absorbed the joy emanating from these texts. It is noteworthy that during the persecution of the church, when it was impossible to get any church literature, collections of akathists were copied by Orthodox Christians by hand and carefully stored.

What Orthodoxy says:

According to its structure, the akathist is a large work, consisting of more than 20 parts - kontakia (short introductory stanzas) and ikos (longer and more detailed texts). Each laudatory chant has its own refrain, which is constantly repeated. In the appeal to the Most Holy Theotokos, this is the kontakion “Victory Chosen Voivode ...”, from the first line of which the whole chant was named.

The meaning of this song is divided into two parts:

  • narrative-historical, which tells about the birth of Jesus Christ;
  • moralistic, in which the praise of the Mother of God and her greatness are sung.
Important. It is the laudatory singing of the Chosen Voivode that enters the liturgical circle and is read during the service of Great Lent.

Any other akathists are not part of the Liturgy, but are read only at prayer services. Naturally, very often Orthodox Christians read these texts at home, in personal prayer.

How to read the akathist to the Chosen Voevoda correctly and in what cases

As already mentioned, this laudatory text is read once a year at the Liturgy of Great Lent. Every Orthodox Christian can visit his temple on this day and stand in the service. In addition, custom-made prayer services are practiced with the reading of akathists, which can be ordered in churches. Of course, having ordered a service, it is highly desirable to attend it in person.

In addition to church reading, the text can be read at home. Usually, for this, a blessing is taken from the confessor or parish priest, who, moreover, will tell you how many days you need to read. Akathists can be read both once (for example, on the day of the corresponding holiday), and for a long time (for example, 40 days). Long reading is resorted to when there is any special need or request that is addressed to the Mother of God.

Icon "Victory Chosen Voivode"

Important. It is completely unacceptable to refer to the appeal to the Mother of God as a conspiracy or magic ritual.

Also, do not forget that a purely mechanical proofreading of the text does not bring any spiritual benefit to a person. Prayer will only be heard and fulfilled by the Lord God when it comes from a pure heart and with sincere faith. To do this, you must try to correct your life according to the Commandments of God and Christian doctrine.

About other akathists to the Theotokos:

As for the circumstances in which the praise of the Most Holy Theotokos "The Chosen Governor" is read, they can be practically any. With any trouble, difficult life circumstances, grief can be addressed to the Virgin Mary. Do not forget about the opposite - having received a request or a blessing through prayer to the Lord and His Mother, you can read the sacred text with gratitude.

Many beautiful church hymns are dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. We bring the most exalted and enthusiastic words as a gift to the Mother of God, having drawn them from the holy church poets. In one of the liturgical texts, which sounds at the very end All-night vigil, we will hear a call to Virgin how Governor, i.e, Warlord . We will try to examine this poetic text in detail in order to understand why it is he who completes the First Hour and the entire evening service.

"Choose Governor" - This is a kontakion (short festive chant) of the feast of the Annunciation. However, its peculiarity lies in the fact that it does not speak so much about the holiday, but about the indestructible strength that the Most Holy Theotokos received in response to Her humility. With this power, She protects everyone who asks for help, turning to the Blessed Virgin in prayer.

Victorious to the chosen Voivode, as if we had got rid of the evil ones, gratefully we will write down Thy servants, Mother of God, but, as if having an invincible power, free us from all troubles, let us call Ty: rejoice, Bride Unbrideed.

“To you, strong in battle (struggle, war), Warlord” - so you can translate the first words of the chant. Word "victorious" stands for "victory cries, songs, words". In the Church Slavonic text, the word "victorious"- plural - and therefore it does not refer to the Mother of God herself.

Words "victorious" and "thankful"(also plural) » refer to the word "let's recreate", i.e, "Let's dedicate". So, the first half of the kontakion can be translated as follows: “To you, strong in battle, the Commander, we, Your servants, having got rid of troubles and misfortunes (“from the evil ones”), bring victory and thanksgiving songs, Mother of God!”

In the second part of the text, we ask in faith to protect us from troubles in the future. Word "power" translates as "strength, power" Thus, the final phrases can be translated as follows: “... But, having power and invincible strength, You protect us from all kinds of troubles, let us call to You: “Rejoice, Unbrideed Bride.”

In connection with the text of this victorious, military hymn, I would like to recall the story of how, after finding the miraculous Iberian Icon of the Mother of God on Athos, the holy image miraculously disappeared several times from the temple where it was placed, and appeared above the gates of the monastery (hence its second name - "The Goalkeeper"). Appearing to one of the monks, the Most Holy Theotokos said that she did not want to be kept, but she wanted to guard and protect Her children Herself.

The love of the Mother of God for the human race has a mighty power. And reciprocal love for Her, the Chosen Governor, makes us stronger. After all, after the end of the service, we will leave the temple, as if descending from heaven to earth, where everyday affairs and worries await us. Can we do something good without the help of the Mother of God?...

At the very beginning of the new century, a series of miraculous events took place in Russia. One of them took place in the Bogolyubsky monastery, founded on the site of the murder of the holy noble prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, who was the first Russian uncrowned tsar. He is one of the few who was honored during his lifetime to visit Samaya Holy Mother of God. He was killed, repeating the fate of his ancestors, the holy noble princes Boris and Gleb, and future destiny eternally persecuted by the gates of hell Holy Russia.

Andrei Bogolyubsky has a special place in the fate of Russia. Taking in hand miraculous image Mother of God of Vladimir, the holy prince, as it were, blessed them from now on and until the century the main events of Russian history. Eight centuries after the death of the prince, on the day of his memory, the last Russian tsar, the holy martyr Nicholas II, was also killed. Apparently it is no accident that the following miraculous event took place in Bogolyubovo at the very beginning of the 21st century. According to eyewitnesses, one pilgrim photographed the icon of the Mother of God of Czestochowa, to which Russian people pray for the gift of the last Russian tsar. (Troparion, tone 4. Invincible Victory, Lady of Częstochowa, of the ancient goodwill of us to the Self-Seeing, future salvation to the Guardian, make us worthy of the coming Tsar with repose.) However, instead of the image of the Mother of God of Czestochowa, another image of the Mother of God appeared in the photograph in a helmet and chain mail, in her hand She is holding an eight-pointed Russian cross. The reproduction of the icon of the Mother of God of Częstochowa has been preserved. A scar has been preserved on the face, like that of the Czestochowa Icon of the Mother of God. Some fragments of the photograph, as it were, have not yet formed, especially in places where the chain mail is depicted. Therefore, this image began to be called the image of the Virgin of Czestochowa in armor or the Chosen Voivode.

According to mother V., a similar incident happened in Volgograd. There, when photographing the icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria, the resulting image was divided into two parts, where on one side there was an image of the icon being photographed, and on the other side there was an image of this icon, where the Mother of God was also in chain mail and in a helmet, and the Baby was dressed in a red tunic. When trying to separate the image of the Virgin in chain mail from the image of the Virgin Hodegetria, the image was again divided into two images. Therefore, the Volgograd image consists of two images: the Mother of God Hodegetria and the Mother of God in chain mail.

One of the pilgrims in the Pochaev Lavra saw a similar image of the Virgin in chain mail and a helmet, only the helmet of the Virgin was supplemented with a protective shield from a saber strike to the eyes.

A similar case was in Kyiv.

In addition, it became known that in the Svyato-Vvedensky Verkhnetechensky convent of the Kurgan diocese there was a phenomenon in a thin dream at the same time to two schemniks of the Most Holy Theotokos. In this monastery, the icon of the Mother of God of Czestochowa or Invincible Victory was especially revered, a special akathist was composed and a prayer for the salvation of Russia was constantly read. The Mother of God came out of the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa and began, as it were, to change into a helmet and chain mail, and she held a cross in her hand and gave the command to paint such an icon as She was revealed, and call this image the Russian Mother of God. The first icon, troparion and kontakion and akathist were painted in this monastery. Subsequently, the icon of the Virgin was called "Stand for Christ to the martyr's cross." It is worth noting that the icon of the Mother of God of Czestochowa was handed over to Tsarina Helena at the time of her acquisition Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, so that the icon is celebrated on the same day as this event according to the church calendar (March 19 according to the new style).

Kondak, ch. 4

Blessed Virgin Mary, / crucified with the Son in the Heart of the Mother of God, / Our invincible weapon from generation to generation, / fearless Warrior, / Strengthen us in the battle against the enemy visible and invisible, / for Holy Russia and the Orthodox faith, / and make us not be afraid to suffer / and even lay down your life / for our Lord Jesus Christ.

Troparion, ch. 4

Chosen Voevoda of the Christian spiritual army, / Indestructible by God, the Foundation of our salvation, / a formidable intimidation enemy of the visible and invisible, / Most Holy Lady Theotokos! / Strengthen our spirit in standing for the Orthodox Faith, / even until the death of martyrdom, / for our Lord Jesus Christ!

Lists from the icon from the Kurgan diocese and from the revealed Bogolyubsky picture became revered throughout Russia. Symbolic meaning armor, helmet, cross in the hand of the Virgin is given in two epistles of the Apostle Paul. (First Epistle of the Apostle Paul to Thessalonica 5:8) “For when they say: peace and security, then sudden destruction will come upon them, just as the pain of childbirth befalls a woman in her womb, and they will not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that the day will find you like a thief. For you are all sons of light and sons of the day: we are not sons of the night, nor sons of darkness. So, let us not sleep, like the rest, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep sleep at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. But we, being sons of the day, let us be sober, putting on the armor of faith and love and the helmet of the hope of salvation, because God has not determined us to be angry, but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. (The Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Ephesians ch. 6 St. 10 - 17) “Put on the whole armor of God, so that you can stand against the wiles of the devil, because our battle is not against blood and flesh, but against principalities, against authorities, against the world rulers of darkness of this world, against the spirits of wickedness in high places. For this, take up the whole armor of God, so that you can withstand the evil day and, having overcome everything, stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having your feet shod in readiness to preach the gospel of peace; above all, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”

On the eve of the First World War and the revolution at the World Exhibition in Paris, Russia presented a sculpture of Kasli cast iron, called "Russia". She represented a woman in a helmet, chain mail with an eight-pointed Russian cross on her chest, prophetically holding right hand sword, and shielded with a shield with her left hand royal regalia: crown, crown and orb, separately lying on the column. Today this sculptural image can be seen in the Catherine's Hall of the Kremlin, in State Duma, in some museums, on the logos of patriotic publications. This image has become the archetype of Russian public consciousness.

Now the icons of the Russian Mother of God are accepted by some military units like holy banners. And many warriors carry printed icons of the Russian Mother of God with them as personal shrines. Many people who prayed to the Most Holy Theotokos in front of this image noticed the special grace of admonishment in difficult circumstances and protection from danger.

TROPAR, ch. 4

Chosen Voivode of the spiritual Christian army, / Indestructible by God, the Foundation of our salvation. / Terrible Fear is the enemy of the visible and invisible, / Most Holy Lady Theotokos! / Strengthen our spirit in standing for the Orthodox Faith / even until the death of martyrdom / for our Lord Jesus Christ!

KONDAK, ch. 4

Blessed Virgin Mary, / Crucified with the Son in the heart of His Mother of God! / Invincible from generation to generation, our Weapon, / Fearless Warrior! / Strengthen us in the battle against enemies visible and invisible / for Holy Russia and the Orthodox Faith / and make us not afraid to suffer / and even lay down your belly / for our Lord Jesus Christ!

Chosen at the Pre-Eternal Council to be the Mother of our God / and of the whole world and a purely Christian race, / surpassing Cherubim and Seraphim in purity, / Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary / we offer this prayer in honor of Her icon. / We worship her reverently, / in repentant joy diligently blatantly:

Where lawlessness multiplies, there the Grace of God abounds... The darkness of anti-Christ thickens: there is no love, truth will disappear, lies and enmity, anger and hatred are sown in the human heart. Brother rises against brother, children against parents, parents against children. Already the ax is at the root, but You, Mother of God, do not stop giving us, drowning in sins, many kinds of help, and we gratefully cry out to You:

SAVE us, resurrected to Holy Russia;

SAVE us, asking forgiveness of our sins from the Lord;

SAVE us, giving spiritual strength and courage to the soldiers of Christ;

SAVE us, Motherly Love always showing us;

SAVE us, unceasingly propitiating God;

SAVE us, turning His wrath to mercy;

SAVE us, our Indestructible Wall;

SAVE us, Victory is our Invincible;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

More than once the enemy of the human race strained his vain strength against Holy Russia, but the Most Holy Theotokos saved Orthodox Christians from perdition. Was it not the Mother of God who saved the Russian Church, and indeed our Fatherland itself, from final extermination in the time of the last world war, frightening through Elijah, Metropolitan of the Lebanese Mountains, the godless ruler, commanding to open the temple and monasteries, to return from the battlefield and from the dungeons of the servants of God, so that sing to them with the faithful: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, THANK YOU GOD.

Since the fall of the morning star, spiritual warfare on earth has not ceased. And again You, O Mother of God, Chosen Voevodo, exalt us, as well as our holy relatives, against all evil and give us the Cross. We, accepting Him, with the hope of Your all-powerful help, cry out to You:

SAVE us, Crosses temples, monasteries and people Your enlightening;

SAVE us, illuminating everyone and everything with the Light of Christ;

SAVE us, from sinful darkness our Rebellion;

SAVE us, to stand up for the world, the flesh and the devil, helping us;

SAVE us, bodily and spiritual wounds Healing;

SAVE us, forbidding us to lose heart and despair;

Save us, Helping to carry the Cross;

SAVE us, Our Invincible Weapon;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

Slavically crouching at Your Most Pure Feet, Mother of God, we fervently and humbly pray to Thee: grant us only a small spark of Your Love, in which there is no fear, and Purity, in order to burn everything unclean in us, in order to sing holy to us: ALLELUJA, ALLILUYA, ALLILUYA, GLORY YOU GOD.

The Savior prophesied to the remnant of the faithful: “Do not be afraid, little flock!” And packs of rivers: "Dare, for Az conquered the world!" Save, Mother of God, this remnant for the Lord and vouchsafe to sing to You in every place:

SAVE us who do not reject those who come to You;

SAVE us, our Sanctification;

SAVE us, the prayers of the Archangel and the Angel and all the Saints for us accepting;

SAVE us, Thy servants, like children, leading to the Lord;

SAVE us, Verbal Paradise;

SAVE us, the saints of God Heavenly Bliss;

SAVE us repentant sinners Forgiveness;

SAVE us, bringing souls out of hell;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

The promises of the Lord are immutable. Heaven and earth will pass away, but the words of God will not pass away. Antichrist is destined to come into the world, and after that - to the Lord for the Last Judgment on this vile lawless man, his servants and unrepentant sinners. Oh, God-chosen Mother! They gave us that terrible antichrist time, as if we were weak. Extend us, sinners, a century to repentance, without which we cannot see the Paradise we long for, and in hell we cannot sing to God: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, GLORY TO YOU GOD.

Our Sovereign Lady! Restore the Throne of Russian Tsars. Reveal this miracle to us unworthy. We will thankfully sing to You:

SAVE us, on the Russian Throne in the days of turmoil invisibly ascended;

SAVE us, the Scepter and the Power of the Russian Tsars received;

SAVE us, Holy Russia, Your House, secretly ruling;

SAVE us, the mystery of iniquity is here to the end, forbidding;

SAVE us, awakening the Russian people from spiritual death;

SAVE us, directing everything to the temples of God;

SAVE us, jealousy for Bose in our hearts is inflaming;

SAVE us, Heaven and Earth Queen;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

Our intercessor, Queen of Heaven! Vema, as if only the throne, to strongly keep our Power from the final collapse, and moreover, to make it rich and irresistible from adversaries. For every reasonable father will try with all his might to establish his house and in splendor pass it on to his son - the heir. Even more so, the Orthodox Tsar, who fears God, his kingdom. Mother of God! Position the hearts of our unenlightened and misguided brothers and sisters in accepting the spirit of the uncorrupted Orthodox Faith, so that they understand the salvation for Russia of the lawful royal power and sing to God: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, GLORY TO YOU GOD.

Holy Mother of God! Raise up to us the One Who restrains all evil, which has multiplied without measure in the State of our Russia, to deliver it from the Judeo-Masson Christ-hating yoke, in order to overthrow and expel the theomachists from it different stripes: sorcerers and warlocks, satanists and child molesters, magicians and fortune tellers and others, their name is legion. Along with them, and traitors to the Orthodox Faith and our Fatherland. Let us vouchsafe to sing unrestrictedly to You:

SAVE us, who loved Holy Russia;

SAVE us, who made her her home;

Bless us, many miraculous icons manifested in it;

SAVE us, the saints of God without number who opened here;

SAVE us, who did not allow the Orthodox Faith in the Russian country to be destroyed to the end;

SAVE us, like the apple of her eye she saved;

SAVE us, and bestowing this Faith with a new kind;

SAVE us, for her sake and forgiving us;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

Before the Resurrection, according to the Law of God, it is fitting to be Golgotha. The Lord showed us this. Holy Russia already had it, or it will still be - God knows! Strengthen us, Queen of Heaven, with the word of Your Son: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; fear more than that, who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Mt. 10, 28/. But we, renewed and encouraged, with one mouth and one heart will cry out to God: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, GLORY TO YOU GOD.

God is with us! Understand the tongues and submit, as God is with us! God is with us and the Most Holy Theotokos, who is against us?! .. Little power is given to our time, but the power of God is made in weakness, and God is in power, but in Truth! To save what we have, especially the Orthodox Faith. Help us in this, O Most Pure One, let us thankfully sing to You:

Save us, Church Triumphant and Militant Mistress;

Save us, helping Orthodox Christians;

Save us, who creates them invincible;

Save us, fortifying us for the feat of martyrdom for Christ;

SAVE us, making the hearts of the faithful the Temple of God;

SAVE us, preparing the supper for the Most Holy Trinity there;

SAVE us, tirelessly caring for us;

SAVE us, protecting us from the machinations of the enemy;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God! Through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, banish the spirit of the Antichrist from Russia, do not let us be imprinted by it and work for the enemy, but grant to sing to You: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, GLORY TO YOU GOD.

Our Queen and Mother, Blessed Virgin Mary! Reject from us all the intrigues of the devil, in this difficult time, do not reject our prayers and sighs of the heart against the deadly and godless spirit of the Antichrist, who is trying to seal the Russian people into his service and reject him from the Grace of the Living and True God. Protect us from the deceit of the bestial, do not let us accept his mark and bow to him, but make us sing to You:

SAVE us, destroying the deeds of the enemy;

SAVE us, and help us to defeat him;

Save us, dispersing all darkness with the Light of Christ;

SAVE us, Covering the faithful with Your veil;

SAVE us, our Refuge;

SAVE us, according to God our Salvation;

SAVE us, unceasingly to Him for us sinners, Prayer;

SAVE us, our Forgiveness;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

The end of the age is coming inexorably towards us, but no one, except God, knows either the day or the hour when this will happen. Mother of God! If the Lord allows us to live in the last times, shorten these days of great sorrow with your prayers. Help us before our loved ones, at the door, sing God: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, GLORY TO YOU GOD.

In the days of that sorrow, Jacob was not from the beginning of Creation, the sun will fade, the moon will not give light, the stars will fall from Heaven. Wake us then, Most Holy Lady, with a flickering Light, but we will please Thee with these words:

SAVE us, illuminating the entire Universe with the Light of Christ;

SAVE us, her Eternal Queen;

Save us, surpassing all of God's creation with beauty and purity;

SAVE us, incomparable with anyone;

SAVE us, beloved of God above all;

SAVE us, most of all gifted with Him;

SAVE us, Daughter, Bride and Mother of God;

SAVE us, Most Glorified and Most Blessed;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

God is strong to delay the coming of the Antichrist into the depths of time. The Lord, as the King of kings, is generous and can bestow a thousand years and more. With our sins, we ourselves are bringing terrible times closer ... Grant us, Lord, complete repentance, accept it and our song of praise: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, GLORY TO YOU GOD.

An ornate tongue cannot adequately praise Thee, Mother of God. You are that Fruit, the hedgehog, according to the psalmist, gave the earth. Intercede for us sinners. Stop our fall into the abyss. With heartache, we pray: in the days of leaving the earth, God's grace feed us the weak. Who and what are we without God and without You?! Nothing! Ashes of the earth! .. In difficult end times save those who only call on the Name of God. And now, while our mouth is speaking, make me worthy to sing to you:

SAVE us, the faithful, like a kokosh gathering her chicks under her wings;

SAVE us, our unclaimed Treasure;

Save us, unsetting Star;

SAVE us, Living Water in the sultry desert of the world;

SAVE us, unceasing angelic Singing;

SAVE us, all earthly Praise;

SAVE us, Lyuba, conquering every desire;

SAVE us, Joy of all Joys;

SAVE US, CLIMBED VOEVODA, TO BATTLE AGAINST THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE ENEMIES STRENGTHENING US.

In the hour appointed by God, all those who have died from eternity will rise from the tombs. Bone will gather to bone, and they will put on flesh. The souls will enter these resurrected bodies, while the living will change and all will rise before the Lord at the Last Judgment. Then the righteous will rejoice, and the sinners will mourn. And where shall we find ourselves?.. Vouchsafe, Most Holy Theotokos, to stand at the right hand of Your Son and God Jesus Christ, and follow You, listen to His joy, sing loudly: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, GLORY TO YOU GOD.

“To the chosen Voivode, victorious, as if we had got rid of the evil ones, we thankfully describe Thee, Thy servants, the Mother of God.”

After getting rid of evils and disasters, it is most natural and pleasant to rejoice and give thanks. But do you know, brethren, over whom and in whose favor the victory was accomplished, for which we will now commemorate the chosen Governor with gratitude? It was done, as history tells, in favor of the Greeks and their throne city - Constantinople, which suffered from a cruel siege - it was done over the kagan, the leader of the Scythians, among whom, in all likelihood, were our ancestors. Thus we give thanks for a beneficence alien to us - we celebrate our own defeat!

What does it mean? – The fact that the Christian faith, in this respect, as in many others, has changed the order of things and taught to look at events differently: to regard the wisdom of the world as violence, and the violence of the cross as the only wisdom; to impute tears of repentance to the source of spiritual bliss, and worldly joys and laughter to evil and destruction; cherish deprivations before wealth, sufferings - to boast, in humiliation - to triumph. If we had hitherto remained in the darkness of paganism, then the memory of the miraculous defeat of our ancestors under the walls of Constantinople would have been the subject of public sorrow and lamentation; but, since by the grace of God we have been led out of this darkness into the wonderful light of Christianity, we remember it with our conquerors, we give thanks - for our own defeat! And in doing so, we act perfectly justly; for in the face, darkened by the darkness of paganism, our ancestors according to the flesh, unbelief rushed against faith, wild ferocity - against the civil system, greed of prey - against peaceful property. On the contrary, in the person of the inhabitants of Constantinople (who are also our ancestors by faith), through the sending down to them miraculous help from above, trust in God and prayer are rewarded: such virtues by which we also live and breathe, from which we expect salvation, temporal and eternal.

The triumph of faith, wherever it is revealed, is the triumph of all believers; the reward of fervent prayer, no matter who it descends on, is the reward of all those who truly pray; The victory of Christianity, in whatever form, is a common victory for all Christians. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that we are now celebrating, in some way, our own defeat. This is perfectly in the spirit of our holy faith; for "the spirit of true Christianity consists in always triumphing over oneself." Let us reveal this thought in honor of our chosen Voivode, Who is the best leader and helper in this inner war.

Our holy faith, brethren, proceeding from the God of love and peace, is all full of grace and bounty; but at the same time she brings with her cruel abuse. A Christian should not repay evil for evil ( Rome. 12:17), "to love the most enemies" ( Matt. 5:44), pray for the most crucifiers ( OK. 23:34); but at the same time he must always be a warrior and a winner. Do you think, - asked the Lord Himself and our Savior, - “Do you think that you came to bring peace to the earth? - neither, did not come, bring the world, but the sword " (Matt. 10:34). And in another place, inviting to courage and struggle in the spiritual battle, He Himself says: dare, that is, stand and fight courageously, "like Az conquered the world" ! (In. 16:33). The apostles of Christ also very often call for spiritual warfare, offer for this all kinds of weapons, give advice, encourage courage, point to the crowns prepared for the victors; Christian they have a warrior, from the cradle to the grave.

What is this battle that our holy faith brings with it? What is this victory that every Christian should strive for? This is the battle of man with himself; it is a victory over the passions and the flesh, over everything that is in us hostile to God and to ourselves. The Christian must, firstly, overcome the world with its charms, temptations, power, craftiness and contagious impurity. He must defeat the spirits of evil under heaven, with their invisible and visible attacks. But the main battlefield for a Christian is his own heart. External enemies mean little to him if there is no rebellion within; attacks from outside are harmful only when there are traitors in the person himself. And against this domestic evil, all the strength and all the courage of a Christian must be directed. Going against your favorite habits, against the demands of your flesh, against the desires of your own heart is often more difficult than going against the darkness of enemies: but - you must go!

Whoever does not wage this internal warfare is a Christian by one name. Only victory over ourselves makes us true Christians. Without this, Christianity and man remain alien to each other. Without this, there is no and cannot be salvation!

To be completely convinced of this important truth, one has only to remember what state a person is in now and why our holy faith was given to us. - It is given for our salvation, in order to save each of us from those terrible evils that burden each and every one. But what is the essence of these evils and calamities from which Christianity must free us? - Mainly in the fact that we are not our own, that we are in slavery, in captivity, in extreme oppression and poverty. Who is our enemy and oppressor? Sin, feelings and passions. They dominate us, everything else submits to them and suffers. The mind suffers, being filled with lies, deceptions, exhausted in the service of vice; the will suffers, moving incessantly in the wind of sensual desires and passions; freedom suffers, not having the strength to turn to the law and blindly following the feelings; the body itself suffers from unnatural pleasures, although the sin that lives in us warms and nourishes it most of all. After this, how can we be saved, if not by strife with ourselves, with what is in us hostile to ourselves? - And what else is left for our holy faith to do, how not to provide us with the means to emerge victorious from this battle? So it really is! Understand the essence and composition of Christianity; and you will immediately see that everything in him is directed towards this necessary goal - to free a person from the captivity of passions, from the slavery of feelings, from the humiliation of the spirit under the dominion of the flesh; and since the source and seat of this evil is in himself, to make him a conqueror over himself.

Therefore, as we said, the Christian himself looks at many things quite differently from the natural man. What for the latter seems to be the greatest evil, for example, suffering, poverty, humiliation, for all this hurts his self-esteem, the very same seems and should seem good for the former; for it frees him from inner slavery and returns him to the freedom of the spirit.

According to this holy law, we celebrate our present triumph, despite the fact that the event we remember is incompatible with the pride of the people. It is truly incompatible with pride; but it is perfectly compatible with love for God, with love for one's neighbor, and with pure love for oneself. For in the person of the Greeks, delivered by the intercession of the Mother of God from the siege of the Scythians, faith, hope and prayer were rewarded: and these are the very virtues in which our salvation is also contained. The rumor about the miraculous defeat of the soldiers under the walls of Constantinople, which spread among our ancient ancestors, no doubt contributed to the production of respect for the Christian faith in them, and predisposed them to leaving paganism, which then followed - first privately, in some persons, and then in all the people, under St. Vladimir. Therefore, our very faith is, in a certain way, the fruit of the defeat that our ancestors suffered from the chosen Governor.

Is it not so, brethren, with great zeal that we must now flow to the most pure image of this Governor, who, having delivered the Greeks from evil, and evil brought upon our ancestors in order to bring good on them over time ( Rome. 3:8) that we use today? But, thanking the Mother of God for the external victory over us, let us not forget to ask for internal victory over us, being firmly convinced that in this last victory, over ourselves, lies the whole triumph of our faith, that our very salvation depends on it. Amen.

"Victory to the Chosen Voivode"

In 626, under the emperor Heraclius, the troops of the Persian king Khazroy invaded the empire. The Persian governor Sarvar, without encountering serious resistance on his way, reached Chalcedon, destroying everything in his path. At the same time, the Scythians on boats approached Constantinople from the Black Sea. The inhabitants were preparing for defense, and Patriarch Sergius with icons of the Mother of God went around the city walls, asking Her for intercession. The Scythians landed on the shore and went on an attack in the place where the temple of the Life-Giving Spring was located, but the attack was repulsed.

But then the invaders united. The Persian army approached the walls of Constantinople, and the Scythian boats entered the Golden Horn Bay and tried to take the city from the Blachernae Church. While the soldiers repulsed the blow of the Persians, other forces acted on the sea: a terrible storm broke out, which sank the Scythian boats. The legend says: “The sea raged and raged like a wild beast, fiercely attacked the enemies of the Mother of God and mercilessly swallowed them.” Delighted, the Greeks went on the offensive, even women and children were chasing the enemies. It all ended with the fact that both the Scythians and the Persians retreated with heavy losses.

Soon the city again needed the intercession of the Virgin. Under Emperor Leo III the Isaurian, the Agarians got into the habit of sacking Constantinople. For seven years in a row they approached the city on ships and devastated the surroundings, and finally decided to lay siege to it. Residents of Constantinople with the icon of the Virgin went around the walls, praying for salvation. The Greeks managed to burn part of the enemy ships, another part died from the storm that broke out. The rest tried to enter the Aegean Sea, but fell under a sudden hail and sank. The rout was complete: out of 1800 ships that approached Constantinople, only ten survived.

For the third time, through the intercession of the Mother of God, Constantinople was saved from our compatriots - a thunderstorm came from Kyiv. In the middle of the 9th century, two knights from the Rurik squad, who did not receive the cities Askold and Dir in control, asked their prince to rob Tsargrad, as Constantinople was called in Russia. To begin with, they established themselves in Kyiv, accumulated strength for four years, and, finally, in 866, they had both the opportunity and the reason for the attack.

Relations between the Russians and the Greeks, who shared influence in the Constantinople market, have always been difficult. The ideology of the raid was formulated by the Russian historian Alexander Nechvolodov: they "could fulfill the cherished desire of the Russians - to take revenge on the insidious and arrogant Greeks for all the insults and humiliations that our ancestors suffered from them during the Khazar yoke." There was also a reason - in Constantinople, in the course of trade relations, several Russian grain merchants were killed. And in truth, of course, they went to rob ...

The Russian princes gathered two hundred boats, put forty to sixty people on each and went to Constantinople. They went skillfully and secretly, so that until their appearance at the city walls, the Greeks did not even suspect about the raid. The emperor with an army was not in the city - he went on a campaign against the Arabs, and the capital remained defenseless.

It was a beautiful summer day, the sea was absolutely calm. The Russians appeared as if they emerged from the depths of the sea. They defeated the suburbs to the very fortress walls, captured the piers with ships and goods, and then surrounded the city and began to pour earth to the walls, preparing for the assault.

The people, except for those who were on the walls, rushed to the temples. St. Photius delivered a proper moralizing speech: “Is it not for our sins that all this was sent down upon us! Isn’t this a denunciation of our iniquities, doesn’t this punishment prove that there will be a terrible and inexorable judgment ... And how can we not endure terrible troubles - remember how the Greeks unfairly offended visiting Russians in Constantinople when we murderously paid off those who owed us something small, insignificant ... We received forgiveness and did not have mercy on our neighbor. Themselves rejoiced, they grieved everyone, they themselves were glorified, they dishonored everyone, they themselves were strong and pleased with everything, they offended everyone, went mad, grew fat, fat, expanded ... You are now crying, and I am crying with you. But our tears are in vain. Whom can they beg now, when before our eyes the swords of enemies ... "

Having finished his speech, the saint ordered to take the Robe of the Mother of God. The shrine was surrounded by a procession around the city walls and immersed in water. “The view of the Orthodox procession,” writes A. Nechvolodov, “with the patriarch and clergy in full vestments, a lot of banners, harmonious singing and the miraculous robe carried in front – all this presented a completely unusual sight for the pagans of the Russians; they were so terrified of him that everywhere, as soon as they saw the approach of the procession, they hastily abandoned the work of conducting the attack and hurried to their boats, after which they left the city. So, by the intercession of the Mother of God, Tsargrad was miraculously saved from complete destruction.

However, in fairness, it must be said that the Russians already took the richest booty, and also glorified themselves with a successful campaign and paid in full for all grievances, both genuine and invented. Two years later, Askold sent ambassadors to Constantinople to make peace and agree on the rules of trade. In addition, interested in the Greek faith, the prince asked to be enlightened in Christianity, and the Patriarch of Constantinople appointed a bishop to Kyiv. According to legend, when he arrived, Askold gathered a veche. The people of Kiev listened to the Greek preacher for a long time, and then declared that they wanted to see a miracle with their own eyes. For example, let the bishop throw the gospel into the fire, and it will remain unharmed. The bishop, having prayed to God, put the book into the fire, and it did not burn. Many of those who saw this were baptized, including Prince Askold.

The Holy Church sings the triple help of the Theotokos - against the Scythians with Persians, Hagarians and Russians - on Saturday of the fifth week of Great Lent. This akathist begins with a kontakion known to all:

“To the chosen voivode, victorious, as if having got rid of the evil ones, with thanksgiving we will write down Thy servants, Mother of God; but as if you have an invincible power, free us from all troubles, let us call Thee: rejoice, Bride not bride!

In Russian translation, this prayer sounds like this:

“We, Your servants, Mother of God, bring You victorious songs, as a military leader helping us in the struggle, and thanksgiving songs, as those delivered by You from troubles. You, who have invincible power, free us from all troubles, so that we cry out to You: Rejoice, Bride not bride.

Finally convinced of the intercession of the Mother of God, the Greeks now honored Her with their military successes. Having won a victory over the Scythians, Emperor John Tzimiskes 1 returned to Constantinople. The Patriarch, together with the people, came out to meet him. For the solemn entry of the emperor into the capital, a chariot drawn by four horses was prepared. But the emperor put the icon of the Mother of God on the wagon, and he himself walked beside him.

Emperor John Komnenos, also returning after the victory over the Scythians, also put the icon on the chariot. The nobles led the horses, and the emperor himself carried the cross.
