The origin (wear) of the Honest Trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord. Honey Savior. The origin of the Honorable Trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord. About the holiday. Sermon of the day

On August 14, on the first day of the Dormition Lent, the Origin (wear) of the Honorable Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord is celebrated.

This holiday was established in Constantinople due to illnesses, which often occurred there in August. The beginning of this holiday dates back to the 9th century, and from the 12th-13th centuries it was established in all local Churches... In Constantinople there was a custom, according to which every year a part of the Life-giving Tree of the Lord's Cross, kept in the house church of the Byzantine emperors, was worn out in the church of St. Sophia, where the blessing of water was performed. Then, starting from August 1, for two weeks this shrine was worn around the city, while litias were served "for the consecration of places and averting diseases." On August 28, the Life-giving Tree of the Cross was transferred back to the royal chambers.

The Russian name of the holiday "origin" is an incorrect translation of the Greek word, which means a solemn ceremony, a procession of the cross. Therefore, the word "wear and tear" has been added to the name of the holiday.

In the Russian Church, this festival was combined with the remembrance of the Baptism of Rus on August 14, 988. In the "Legend of the effective ranks of the holy catholic and apostolic great church of the Assumption", compiled in 1627 by order of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Filaret, the following explanation of the holiday on August 14 is given: human, in all hail and weight ".

The news about the day of the Baptism of Rus was preserved in the chronographs of the 16th century: "The great prince Vladimir of Kiev and all of Russia on August 14 was baptized." On this holiday, the carrying out of the Cross and worship of it is supposed to be in the temples. According to the rite accepted today in the Russian Church, the small consecration of water on August 14 is performed before or after the liturgy.

Together with the blessing of water, the blessing of honey takes place (therefore, this holiday is called among the people "The First Honey Savior", "Savior on the Water", "Wet Savior").

From that day on, the eating of his new collection is blessed.

The feast of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos, celebrated on the same day, was established on the occasion of signs from the icons of the Savior, Holy Mother of God and the Honorable Cross during the battles of the holy noble prince Andrei Bogolyubsky (1157-1174) with the Volga Bulgarians. In 1164, Andrei Bogolyubsky undertook a campaign against the Volga Bulgarians, who were pushing the oppressed inhabitants of the Rostov and Suzdal lands. Hoping for the help of the Heavenly Queen, the prince took Her with him miraculous icon, which was brought by him from Kiev and subsequently received the name Vladimirskaya. Two priests in vestments carried the holy icon and the Honorable Cross of Christ before the army. Before the battle, the pious prince, having joined the holy Mysteries, turned with a fervent prayer to the Mother of God: "Everyone who trusts in Thee, Lady, will not perish, and I, a sinner, have a wall and a covering in You." Following the prince, before the icon, commanders and soldiers fell to their knees and, kissing the image, went against the enemy.

The Bulgarians were defeated and put to flight. According to legend, on the same day, the Greek emperor Manuel won a victory over the Saracens. Immutable proof of the miraculousness of both these victories was the huge fiery rays coming out from the icons of the Savior who were in the army, Mother of God and the Holy Cross. These rays covered the shelves of the faithful rulers of Greece and Russia and were visible to all who fought. In memory of these miraculous victories, with the mutual consent of Prince Andrew and Emperor Manuel and with the blessing of representatives of the highest ecclesiastical authorities, a holiday was established for the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos.

Sermon on the Destruction of the Honorable Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord

“The cross is the keeper of the whole universe, the cross is the beauty of the Church, the cross is true statement, the cross is the glory of angels and the plague of demons. "

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today the Church glorifies the power of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord, and at the same time remembers the honest sufferings that our Lord Jesus Christ endured on the Cross. The closest reason for the now celebrated event was the miraculous signs revealed from the Tree of the Life-giving Cross to the inhabitants of Constantinople.

In ancient times, a severe pestilence broke out in the capital of the Greek state, Constantinople, which carried away many human lives... After, at the request of the inhabitants of the city, the Tree of the Cross of the Lord was carried through the streets of the capital for fifteen days with prayers and sprinkling of buildings and houses with holy water, the destructive disease stopped, and all Christians brought the deepest thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Subsequently, this miracle was also joined by another significant event, namely: the Orthodox Greek emperor Manuel, with the presentation of the icons of the Savior and the Mother of God before the troops, defeated the Saracens, and the Orthodox Russian prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, at the same time, with the presentation of the icons of the Savior and the Mother of God, won a victory over the Volga Bulgarians. The evidence that these victories were won by supernatural power was the heavenly radiance emanating from the icons and illuminating the people who were there. In memory of this remarkable event, the Orthodox Greek and Russian Churches have established to add to the feast of the bearing of the Cross and the celebration of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos - in remembrance of the heavenly blessings bestowed on both Orthodox countries.

But, glorifying now the power of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord, the Church at the same time remembers the sufferings of Christ, suffered by Him on the Cross. The Gospel, laid down for today, sets out the story of the last hours and minutes of the earthly life of the Son of God. He, sinless, Most Holy of Holies, accepting the appearance of a slave, humiliated, offended by the crowd of fierce enemies rustling around Him, marches to the court of Pilate, a pagan, a sinner. The scribes, elders and all the people with incomprehensible hatred demand from the ruler death for the Immortal, a shameful death: Crucify, crucify Him (John 19: 6)! They shout.

Pilate, a pagan who did not know the revealed teachings, driven by a sense of justice, hesitates, wants to save Him, saying to the Jews: Capture Him and crucify, for I do not find guilt in Him (John 19: 6). But their threat to accuse him before Caesar forces Pilate to deliver the Lord into the hands of His enemies. And after many new humiliations and insults, the innocent Sufferer, justified at the Pilate judgment, ascends to Golgotha, here he is nailed to the Cross and gives up his spirit, hanging in the midst of two robbers on a tree. What a humiliation, what a terrible death the Lord suffered at this time! And the question is: why such a terrible sacrifice was required?

The same ulcer was for our sins and was tormented for our iniquities, with His ulcer we are healed (Isaiah 53: 5), the holy prophet Isaiah answers. The entire human race was in sin. By the time the Savior came, people had forgotten God; forgotten His Divine Law and the Prophets even those Jews who were entrusted with keeping the Divinely revealed teachings. All sinned, all transgressed the commandments of God, and therefore all angered God and deserved eternal damnation and death. God is all-good and all-merciful, but He is also infinitely righteous. Divine truth was outraged by human untruth, human sins. It was necessary to satisfy this holy Truth. Of the people infected with sin, no one could take on the feat of redemption for the human race, because the sins were extremely great, and according to the gravity of sins, the sacrifice should have been the greatest. And this is the highest and holiest sacrifice made by the Son of God. So God love the world, as He gave His only begotten Son to eat, but everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have an eternal life (John 3:16). Death on the cross Savior we are redeemed from sin, curse and death. The blood of the Innocent was shed on the Cross so that the guilty could escape the wrath of God they deserve: with His ulcer we are healed. So, Christ die our sin for the sake of (1 Cor. 15: 3). What kindness and what ineffable mercy of God towards us sinners!

Nailed to the Cross and shedding His most pure Blood became an eternal Advocate for us before God the Father. His ulcerated hands embrace the entire human race with love and lead everyone to the Father. That which separated the Creator from creation, God from people, the Heavenly Father from the rebellious sons of men, was destroyed by the Calvary Sacrifice. The sting of death has been dulled, the gates of hell have been crushed, the power of the devil has been destroyed, freedom has been granted to faithful people and the gates of heaven have been opened, so that the Cross, the instrument of shameful death, has now become for all believers a precious and highest shrine, an invincible weapon in the struggle against the enemies of our salvation.

Erected on Golgotha, it shines brightly over the entire universe, warming with its rays our immortal souls, chilled from sins and sorrows. Come all to this Cross, look at it and find true peace. Just as Moses of old raised up a brazen serpent in the wilderness and everyone who looked at him received healing from the snake's bite and life, so the Cross of Christ, erected on Calvary, gives healing and rest to all our souls hurt by sins: Like Moses lifted up the serpent into desert, so it befits the Son of Man to ascend, but everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have an eternal life (John 3, 14-15). Such is the ineffable mercy of God to us, sinners, that at the mere thought of everything that Divine love has done for us, the unspoiled human heart should involuntarily be filled with the greatest gratitude to the Creator.

While honoring the Holy Cross now, let us, however, remember that our admiration for the Lord's Cross should not consist only in external actions and words, but should also be performed in the depths of our soul, our spirit. First of all, we need to realize that the Crucified on the Cross is the God-man, the Creator of the entire universe, and therefore the feeling of fear and awe should seize our souls when we kiss the Holy Cross.

Crucified on our Cross for the sake of our sins, the Lord wanted us, cleansed from sins by His Blood, to live for righteousness and to be holy in our entire life, and for this we would be worthy of eternal bliss in the Kingdom of His Father. And therefore, if we sin, we will be subjected to terrible punishment not only for our sins, but also for the Blood of the Son of God, which we trample on, and for the grace that we were sanctified in the Sacrament of Baptism and which we neglected. By our sins, do we not crucify the Lord a second time? Let us, in every possible way, guard ourselves from sins and vices and remain faithful to the Lord, remembering that firm faith attracts God's favor and mercy to us.

A Model of Steadfast Confession of Faith Church of God represents for us today the blessed memory of the holy martyrs of the Maccabees, who lived a century and a half before the birth of Christ. It was a difficult time for the Jewish people when the wicked Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes, robbing Jerusalem and beating many thousands of Jews, raised an evil persecution against their faith, wishing to eradicate it to the end. To this end, he commanded the Jews under threat death penalty stop burnt offerings and sacrifices and libations in the sanctuary, abolish Saturdays and holidays, build pagan altars and offer pagan sacrifices there, abolish circumcision and generally change all previous religious beliefs, laws, customs and paternal customs.

At this time, for the consolation of the Jewish people, the Lord raised up many firm confessors of faith in the true God, who, not wishing to renounce the fatherly laws, choosing rather to die, even desecrated, and courageously endured martyrdom... Among them were the ninety-year-old elder Eleazar, the seven brothers of the Maccabees and their mother Solomonia.

Elder Eleazar was seduced by the torturers with the opportunity to make a sacrifice at least in pretense and thus save his life, but he, whitened with gray hair and filled with piety, answered: "It is not worthy of my age to be hypocritical to preserve the small life of my days ..." - and then he was mercilessly tormented.

Likewise, the holy brothers Maccabees, confessing their faith and hope for a future resurrection, courageously accepted one after another martyrdom, strengthened by the hope that the Lord would revive them in the future life. After all of them, their blessed mother Solomonia also gave up her spirit into the hands of God.

Dear brothers and sisters, with full consciousness of all the goodness and mercy of God, let us fall today to the Honorable Cross, this banner of our salvation, with true filial love we kiss the holy feet of the Savior, crying out to Him: We bow to Your Cross, O Lord, and glorify Your holy resurrection ! Amen.

Archimandrite Kirill (Pavlov)

1/14 August, on the first day of the Dormition Lent, the Church celebrates the Origin (wear) of the Honorable Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. According to the Charter, it refers to small holidays "with praise", but has one day of the forefeast.

Word "origin", or more precisely translated from Greek, then "Pre-origin", i.e. "Carrying ahead", implies the procession (procession of the cross) taking place on this day with a part of the original Tree of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord. Every year on the first day of August, a part of the Life-giving Cross, which was kept in the home church of the Greek emperors, was brought to the temple of Hagia Sophia and the water was consecrated to heal diseases. People kissed the Cross, on which Christ was crucified, drank the water consecrated by him and received long-awaited health.

Already in the Rite of the Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus (912-959) there are detailed rules demolition of the Honorable Tree from the reliquary, performed before August 1. The Greek Book of Hours of 1897 explains this tradition as follows: "Due to illnesses, which very often occurred in August, the custom has long been established in Constantinople to carry the Honorable Tree of the Cross to the roads and streets to consecrate places and avert illnesses." That's what it is "Pre-origin" Of the Honest Cross. Therefore, the word was added to the name of the holiday "Wear and tear".

The holiday was established in the capital Byzantine Empire Constantinople in the 9th century, and in XII-XIII centuries he established himself in all Orthodox churches... In Russia, this holiday appeared with the spread of the Jerusalem charter at the end of the XIV century.

August 1 in the Russian Orthodox Church also takes place Feast of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos in memory of signs from the honest icons of the Savior, the Most Holy Theotokos and the Holy Cross during the battles of the Greek king Manuel (1143-1180) with the Saracens and the holy noble prince Andrei Bogolyubsky (1157-1174) with the Volga Bulgarians in 1164.

In 1164 Andrey Bogolyubsky (son of Grand Duke Yuri Vladimirovich and grandson of the glorious Vladimir Monomakh) undertook a campaign against the Volga Bulgarians, pushing the oppressed inhabitants of the Rostov and Suzdal lands (Bulgarians, or Bulgars, were called the pagans who lived on the lower reaches of the Volga)... The prince took with him on a campaign against the Volga Bulgarians the miraculous icon, which he brought from Kiev and later received the name Vladimirskaya, and the Honest Cross of Christ. Before the battle, the pious prince, having partaken of the Holy Mysteries, turned with fervent prayer to the Mother of God, asking for the protection and patronage of the Lady: "Everyone who trusts in You, O Lord, will not perish, and I, a sinner, have a wall and a covering in You." Following the prince, before the icon, commanders and soldiers fell to their knees and, kissing the image, went against the enemy. Taking the field Russian army turned the Bulgarians to flight and, pursuing them, captured five cities, including the city of Bryakhimov on the Kama River. When they returned to their camp after the battle, they saw that from the icon of the Mother of God with the Infant Christ, light, like fiery rays emanate, illuminating the entire army. The wondrous sight even more aroused in the Grand Duke the spirit of courage and hope, and he again, turning his regiments in pursuit of the Bulgarians, pursued the enemy and burned most of their cities, putting tribute on the surviving ones.

According to legend, on the same day, thanks to the help from above, the Greek emperor Manuel won a victory over the Saracens (Muslims). Immutable proof of the miraculousness of both these victories was the huge fiery rays coming out from the icons of the Savior, the Mother of God and the Holy Cross that were in the army. These rays covered the shelves of the faithful rulers of Greece and Russia and were visible to all who fought. In memory of these miraculous victories, with the mutual consent of Prince Andrew and Emperor Manuel and with the blessing of representatives of the highest church authorities, it was established feast of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos.

On this holiday, the carrying out of the Cross and worship of it is supposed to be in the temples. In the Russian Church, simultaneously with the celebration of the All-Merciful Savior, remembrance of the Baptism of Rus that took place on August 1, 988, in remembrance of what it is established to perform on this day small consecration of water.According to the order now accepted in the Russian Church, the small consecration of water on August 14, according to the new style, is performed before or after the liturgy. According to tradition, along with the blessing of water, the blessing of honey is performed. Therefore, the people called the holiday « Honey Savior».

Finally, the third holiday of the day - memory of the holy Old Testament martyrs of Maccabees who by the power of faith overcame the temptation of apostasy and, having endured a short-term torment, were vouchsafed salvation and eternal blessed life in the Kingdom of God.

The seven holy martyrs of the Maccabees: Abim, Antoninus, Guri, Eleazar, Eusebon, Adim and Markelles, as well as their mother Solomonia and teacher Eleazar, suffered in 166 BC. NS. from the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes. Antiochus Epiphanes, pursuing a policy of Hellenization of the population, introduced Greek pagan customs in Jerusalem and throughout Judea. He desecrated the Jerusalem temple, placing in it a statue of Olympian Zeus, to whom he forced the Jews to worship.

The 90-year-old elder - the teacher of the law Eleazar, who was judged for adherence to the Mosaic Law, went to torment with firmness and died in Jerusalem. The same courage was shown by the disciples of Saint Eleazar: the seven brothers of the Maccabees and their mother Solomonia. They, fearlessly recognizing themselves as followers of the True God, refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods.

The eldest of the boys, who was the first to answer the king on behalf of all seven brothers, was subjected to terrible tortures in front of the rest of the brothers and their mother; the other five brothers, one by one, endured the same torment. The seventh brother, the youngest, remained. Antiochus proposed to Saint Solomonia to persuade him to renounce, so that at least the last son would remain for her, but the courageous mother strengthened him in the confession of the True God. The boy endured the torment as hard as his older brothers.

After the death of all the children, Saint Solomonia, standing over their bodies, raised her hands with a prayer of gratitude to God and died.

The feat of the holy seven brothers Maccabees inspired the priest Mattathia and his sons, who raised a rebellion against Antiochus Epiphanes, which lasted from 166 to 160 BC. and, having won the victory, they cleansed the Jerusalem temple of idols.

Save, Lord, Thy people and bless Thy heritage, giving victories to resisting and preserving Thy Annaya with Your Cross your residence. (Troparion, voice 1)

Ascended to the Cross by the will, grant your generosity to your new habitation, Christ God, make us glad with your power, giving us victories to adversaries, an aid to those who have your weapon of peace an invincible victory (Kontakion, voice 4)

Thy Cross, O Lord, sanctify, in it there are healings for the weak in sin, for its sake we fall down Ti, have mercy on us (Sedalen voice 6)

The Feast of the Origin (or Passing) of the venerable trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord was established in Constantinople. In the Greek book of hours, the tradition of carrying out a part of the Lord's Cross is explained as follows: “Due to illnesses that very often happened in August, it has long been established in Constantinople to carry the Honorable Tree of the Cross to roads and streets to consecrate places and avert illnesses. On the eve, July 31st, having worn it out from the royal treasury, they put it on St. meal Great church(To Sofia). From now on, until the Dormition of the Theotokos, litias were performed throughout the city and the cross was offered to the people for worship. This is the pre-descent (προοδοσ) of the Holy Cross. "

The very word "origin" (and in the exact translation "pre-descent") means "carrying in front", "procession with the cross" or "procession of the cross". To heal from diseases, people kissed the Cross, drank the water consecrated by it.

There is one more reason for the establishment of the holiday. In 1164, the Greek king Manuel opposed the Saracens, on the same day the Russian prince Andrei Bogolyubsky spoke out against the Bulgarians. On the campaign, the prince took the holy Cross of the Lord and the icon of the Mother of God, which were carried by the priests in front of the voyk, performing prayers and sprinkling blessed water warriors.

The Lord granted victory to the Greek tsar and the Russian prince. Both, armed with a shield of faith, and not only with spears and swords, in addition to victory, received another sign of God's blessing: from the icon of the Mother of God with the Christ Child, light poured out in the form of a radiant radiance that fell on all his army. A similar phenomenon from the icon of the Mother of God was observed by Tsar Manuel with his army. The prince and the king learned about the wonderful grace of the Lord, simultaneously poured out on both. After consulting with the bishops, it was decided to establish a feast for the Lord and His Most Pure Mother on August 1.

The holiday is dedicated to the Cross, the Feat of the Cross of the Savior. Hence the name - Spas. He is called the First Savior, as he is the first among the close in time holidays dedicated to the Savior. It is followed by the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord and the feast of the Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands.

According to custom, in churches, in addition to the consecration of water, honey is consecrated. Believers bring honey as a sign that the first harvest is to God. Consecrating the honey of the first honey harvest, people received a blessing for the entire harvest. According to tradition, some of the honey remained in the church, and some were given to the poor. There is even an expression: "On the First Savior and the beggar will try honey!" Hence the name of the First Savior - "honey".

Celebration The origin of the Honest and Life-giving Cross of the Lord occurs 14 august(August 1, Old Style). On the same day we celebrate the All-Merciful Savior.

The origin of the Honest and Life-giving Cross of the Lord. history of the holiday

According to legend, in Constantinople from ancient times (no later than the 8th century) there was a custom to take out the honest Tree of the Cross on the roads and streets to consecrate places and to drive away diseases. From August 1 (Old Style) and until the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, performing litias throughout the city, they offered the Cross to the people for worship. In the Russian Orthodox Church, this holiday was combined with the remembrance of the Baptism of Rus on August 1, 988. The news about this has been preserved in the chronograph of the 16th century: “ Baptized Grand Duke Vladimir of Kiev and All Russia August 1". In the charter of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, drawn up in 1627 at the direction of Patriarch Filaret, the following explanation of this holiday is given:

And on the Origin on the day of the Honorable Cross, there is a course of consecration for the sake of water and enlightenment for the sake of mankind, in all cities and towns.

The celebration of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos was established on the occasion of signs from the icons of the Savior, the Most Pure Virgin Mary and the Holy Cross during the battle of the holy noble Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky (1157-1174) with the Volga Bulgarians (1164), in which the enemies were defeated. At the same time, the Greek emperor Manuel defeated the Saracens in battle, and his troops also had signs from the holy icons. This is the first of the three feasts of the All-Merciful Savior, celebrated in August (the second is, and the third is the Transfer of the Image of Our Lord Jesus Christ not made by hands from Edessa to Constantinople).

The holiday was established in Constantinople in the 9th century, initially as a local one. In the XII-XIV centuries, it was established in all Orthodox churches. It appeared in Russia with the spread of the Jerusalem charter at the end of the XIV century.

The origin of the Cross of the Lord. Troparion and kontakion to the holiday

Troparion, voice 8

Despising the lofty, accepting the poor, look upon the Savior, and visit us with embittered sins, Master All-Merciful, with the prayers of the Mother of God, grant our souls great mercy.

Kontakion, voice 4

All filthiness of the All-Merciful and Savior, I am a doer, and the moat will sink into despair. But I groan from my heart, and cry out to You the Word, hurry up the generous ones, and reach out for our help, like the Merciful.

The origin of the Holy Cross. Icons

The composition consists of two parts: at the top is the worship of the Savior in the form of Deesis, and below it is a miraculous source with the sick receiving healing. The icon from the Intercession Monastery above the source depicts angels, and behind them is a cross, crowned with a wreath. This reminded of the main theme of the holiday - the worship of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord. As for Deesis, his image on Russian icons corresponded, apparently, to the traditional Russian dedication of the holiday of August 14, not only to the Cross, but also to the Savior and the Mother of God. The icon from the Intercession Monastery is one of the earliest surviving icons on this subject. According to a later legend, she was invested in a monastery. Basil III in 1515. Painting techniques do not contradict this date and, moreover, allow us to confidently assume that the icon was executed by the followers of Dionysius. It is possible that Dionysius was directly associated with the iconography of the "Origin of the Trees": it is known that in the 1480s he painted the Church of the Savior in Chigasy, located opposite the Kremlin, beyond the Yauza, and died in a fire in 1547. The dedication of the church in Chigasy to the All-Merciful Savior directly indicates the feast of August 14, and the temple icon performed by Dionysius could serve as a model for later works.

On the Solvychegodskaya (?) Icon in the center of the composition there is a cruciform well - a source to which people with an icon and a Cross approach from both sides. At the head of the procession are the saints. An angel hovering over the spring lowers the Cross into the font. The intricate architectural curtains in the background above indicate that the action takes place outside the city walls. The patrons and intercessors of the inhabitants of the city, who pray to Christ for mercy to them and the bestowal of blessings, are the Theotokos and John the Baptist, as evidenced by the image of the three-figure Deesis raised above the “city landscape”. A wide stream of water flows from the source down the mountain, to which people fall to heal from various ailments. The scene of the healing of the sick occupies a significant part of the icon's composition.

Folk traditions of the holiday of the Origin of the Holy Cross

The people called the holiday of the Origin of the Holy Cross of the Lord the "honey" Savior, and in some places even the "wet" one. These names originated from the fact that to the first Savior, i.e. honey, the bees cut the hives with honey for the second time and, having chosen the best linden honeycomb, carried them to the church "for the commemoration of the parents." On the same day, they brewed "copper" kvass and treated everyone who came to visit. The first Savior was called "Wet" because, according to the establishment of the church, on that day there was a procession of the cross to the rivers and springs for the consecration of water. And since the peasants not only bathed themselves after the procession, but used to bathe in the rivers and all the cattle, which seemed to be healthy after that, it is not surprising that the holiday itself was called "wet". The First Savior was especially revered in the southern zone of Great Russia, where bread and fruits were ripening earlier and where the role and significance of the Second Savior was attributed to this holiday, since the consecration of bread and vegetables in the south was very often carried out before the Transfiguration of the Lord, precisely on August 14.

August 14 is the day of remembrance of the seven Old Testament martyrs Maccabees, who died in 166 BC. NS. Folk etymology rethought the name of the holiday in connection with the poppy, which ripens by this time. On this day, Makan people were baked, and macaques were baked - lean pies, rolls, buns, gingerbread cookies with poppy seeds and honey. The meal often began with pancakes with poppy seeds. Poppy milk was prepared for pancakes - a poppy-honey mass in which pancakes were dipped. Poppy milk was prepared in a special dish, which in Russia was called makalnik, in Ukraine - makitra, in Belarus - makater. Poppy is mentioned in many proverbs, sayings, choral songs and riddles: "Machok with honey - you will lick your mustache", "Cheren poppy, but boyars eat", "I am glad Jacob that pie with poppy seeds", "Remember poppy, do not be angry and so" , "There is a town on a stamen, there are seven hundred governors in it." On Maccabee day, the youth danced round dances with the song "Oh, on the Poppy Mountain", with playful round dance flirtations, the girls showered the guy with poppy seeds, pinched him, tickled him, singing: "Poppies, poppies, poppies, golden heads!"

Spasov day in the north. I. M. Pryanishnikov, 1887

In some Serbian villages, water and young basil were blessed on Medovy Spas. From that day on, they stopped swimming in reservoirs. It was believed that those who work on this day can get an incurable disease. In Macedonia, the weather during the Maccabees (6 or 12 days of Maccabees) served to predict the weather for the next 6 months or for the entire next year(The weather for August 1 predicted the weather for January next year, etc.). Bulgarians from 1 to 12 August observed the sun, wind and precipitation and thus wondered about the weather for the next 12 months, that is, on next year which used to start on September 1. In northwestern Bulgaria, the sons-in-law went to visit their wife's parents, where they were greeted with bread from the new harvest and wine, in connection with which the day was called “Zetovden”.

The Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians (Chapter 1:18 - 24)
[Of the cross of the Lord]
Brothers, the word about the cross is foolishness for those who are perishing, but for us, who are being saved, it is the power of God. For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will reject the understanding of the prudent. Where is the sage? Where is the scribe? Where is the co-questioner of this age? Hasn't God turned the wisdom of this world into madness? For when the world by its wisdom did not know God in the wisdom of God, then it was pleasing to God to save the believers by the foolishness of preaching. For both the Jews demand miracles, and the Greeks seek wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, for the Jews a temptation, and for the Greeks folly, for the very called ones, Jews and Greeks, Christ, God's power and God's wisdom.

[Martyrs Maccabees]:
The Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Hebrews (chapter 11:33 - 12: 2)
The brethren, all the saints conquered kingdoms by faith, did righteousness, received promises, blocked the lips of lions, extinguished the power of fire, avoided the edge of the sword, strengthened themselves from weakness, were strong in war, drove away strangers' regiments; wives received their dead resurrected; others were tortured, not accepting liberation in order to receive a better resurrection; others experienced abuse and beatings, as well as bonds and prison, were stoned, sawed off, tortured, died by the sword, wandered in mantles and goat skins, enduring shortcomings, sorrows, bitterness; those, whom the whole world was not worthy of, wandered through the deserts and mountains, through the caves and gorges of the earth. And all these, who are testified in faith, did not receive the promise, because God provided something better for us, so that they would not reach perfection without us. Therefore, we also, having such a cloud of witnesses around us, will cast off every burden and sin that beset us, and with patience we will walk the course that is set before us, looking at the author and perfecter of our faith, Jesus.

THE GOSPEL of John (chapter 19)
[Of the cross of the Lord]
At that time, all the chief priests and elders had a conference about Jesus to put him to death; and they took Him to Pontius Pilate, and shouted: Take, take, crucify Him! Pilate says to them: take him you, and crucify him; for I find no fault in Him. The Jews answered him: We have a law, and according to our law He must die, because He made Himself the Son of God. Pilate, hearing this word, was more afraid. And again he entered the praetorium and said to Jesus: Where are you from? But Jesus did not give him an answer. Pilate saith to him: Are you not answering me? do you not know that I have the power to crucify You and the power to let You go? Jesus answered: you would not have had any power over me if it had not been given to you from above. Pilate, hearing this word, took Jesus out and sat down at the judgment seat, in a place called Lyphostroton, or in Hebrew Gavvaf. Then it was Friday before Easter, and the sixth hour. And Pilate said to the Jews, Behold your King! But they cried out: Take, take, crucify Him! Pilate says to them: Will I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar. Then at last he delivered Him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away. And, carrying His cross, He went out to the place called Skull, in Hebrew Golgotha; there they crucified Him, and with Him two others, on one side and on the other, and in the midst of Jesus. Pilate also wrote the inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. This inscription was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was not far from the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Roman. At the cross of Jesus stood His Mother and His Mother's sister, Mary of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus, seeing the Mother and the disciple standing here, whom he loved, says to His Mother: Woman! Here is your son. Then he says to the disciple: here is thy Mother! And from that time on, this disciple took her to him. After that, Jesus, knowing that everything had already been completed, bowing his head, gave up the spirit. But since it was Friday then, the Jews, so as not to leave the bodies on the cross on Saturday, - for that Saturday was a great day, - asked Pilate to break their legs and take them off. So the soldiers came, and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other, who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus, as they saw Him already dead, they did not break His legs, but one of the soldiers pierced His ribs with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true.

[Martyrs Maccabees]:
GOSPEL of Luke (chapter 10:32 - 11: 1)
The Lord said to His disciples: everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess before My Father in Heaven; but whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father in Heaven. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword, for I came to set a man apart from his father, and a daughter with her mother, and a daughter-in-law with her mother-in-law. And a man's enemies are his household. And when Jesus finished instructing his twelve disciples, he passed over from there to teach and preach in their cities.
