And if the presence of supports in this case would not be a problem (they can be easily removed manually), then it was decided to abandon the rotary axis in order to meet the budget allocated for the purchase of equipment. So, it was decided to make the test part on a Roland MDX-540 with manual rotation.
ABS plastic itself is quite even and smooth, so it was decided to fix the workpiece on the table in the most in a simple way- using double-sided tape.
Since the body part is not very large, an end mill with a diameter of 6 mm ( The MDX-540 can accommodate cutters with a shank up to 10mm). After the rough layering was completed, the end mill was replaced with a 3mm ball end mill ( spherical was chosen to provide high quality surfaces, and the diameter is 3 mm to ensure the required rounding radii in the corners).
Before removing the part from the machine, it was necessary to make small modifications to the elements that turned out to be too small for a cutter with a diameter of 3 mm. Using an end mill with a diameter of 3 mm, we made grooves on the inclined part and mounting holes.


The part can now be removed from the machine. In order to position the part when turning over, you can use a temporary jig. To make it, we simply fix a piece of plastic on the table and mill out a recess along the contour of the part. Then you can simply insert a part into it, the coordinate systems of the machine and the part will coincide, and it will simply be held in place by friction. This fastening method is great if you need to mill up to 5-10 products, then the plastic jig will break and will have to be redone. But this fastening method is also good for large series; you just need to add a small screw fastening to it ( for example, as was done in the test with bottle caps).

The processing of the front side generally repeated the processing of the internal side; first, we did a layer-by-layer rough processing with an end mill with a diameter of 6 mm, then we changed the cutter to a spherical cutter with a diameter of 3 mm and did the finishing processing. And before removing the finished product from the machine, we used a 1.5mm end mill to make a small modification to the plane on which the stiffeners and mounting holes are located. This was necessary to ensure a rounding radius in the corners of the ribs, as well as to remove a small rounding radius between the mounting plane and the side walls. Refinement is required because, due to the geometry of the cutters, a minimal unprocessed area remains, only a few tenths of a millimeter (roughing with an end mill leaves a small allowance, and finishing
