Making a skewer. Manufacturing of a mechanical version. What the structure looks like

Camping next to a steaming barbecue requires at least one good kebab specialist in the company.

An electric brazier will allow the meat to be evenly fried on a spit, so as to end up with juicy meat.

The most difficult thing is to fry the meat evenly so that it does not burn.

And it just so happens that the craftsman has to stand at the barbecue and turn the skewers when everyone else is having fun and rest. It is not difficult to help him, you just need to install an electric drive on the brazier, which will perform all the mechanical work. And the kebab specialist will only have to check the readiness of the dish from time to time and replace the skewers with meat.

The most important part of the design is the electric motor. You can pick up a small low-power motor from an old turntable, a children's toy with batteries, use a working, but unnecessary electric drive of a car unit with a power of 12V. In addition, you will need:

"Sprockets" from a bicycle or pulleys of different sizes; bicycle chain or V-belt; gears of the same diameter according to the number of skewers simultaneously placed on the grill, + 2 pcs.; Chain, the step of which fits the gears used; drill, grinder.

Back to the table of contents

In order to make a brazier with an electric drive with your own hands, you first have to assemble a gearbox, which will serve to lower the engine speed and transfer torque to the spitters.

Cut with a grinder from sheet metal 2 identical plates for making the drive housing. The dimensions are selected individually, depending on the parameters of the barbecue. In the upper part of the plates you need to make a number of cuts for laying the skewers.

The distance between them should be slightly larger than the diameter of the gears. To assemble the gearbox on the motor shaft, fix a "sprocket" or a pulley with a smaller diameter. To the other, large, weld the gear. Push the structure onto a shaft with a bearing, fixed on a plate.

The distance from its axis to the bottom of the cut on the body should be equal to the diameter of the gear. The size of the big "asterisk" is selected so that the spit makes 1-2 revolutions per minute around its axis. This will be enough for the meat to be fried, but not burned. At the opposite end of the drive housing on the shaft through the bearing, install the 2nd gear. Fix on the skewers near the handle of the gear, the diameter of which coincides with the diameter of the gear welded to the pulley or "sprocket" engine in a convenient location on the brazier legs, pull the chain or V-belt from the small "sprocket" or pulley on the motor shaft to the large one attached to the drive housing.

Pull the second chain horizontally between the gears on the drive housing and on the large "sprocket". Drill holes in the corners of the plates and connect them with bolts so that the drive mechanism is inside. Weld hooks on which you can hang the electric drive for the barbecue. On the opposite side of the brazier, mount the skewer support in the form of a strip of metal or an angle with holes of a suitable diameter.

For cooking kebabs, skewers are installed sharp end into the holes of the support, and the gears fixed on them are placed by teeth between the links of the horizontal chain in the drive housing. When the electric motor is connected to a power source, the sprockets rotate, transferring rotation to the gears and driving the horizontal chain. She, in turn, rotates the gears fixed on the skewers, turning the pieces of meat strung on them.

If desired, the drive housing can be easily removed from the grill and barbecued in the usual way.

The rotation of the skewers is a tedious and monotonous work, which cannot be interrupted so that instead of a kebab you will not get embers on the skewers as a result.

The idea to create a brazier with an electric drive of skewers appeared a long time ago. Various technical developments over time were transformed into a design consisting of an electric motor powered by 12 V and a drive consisting of a chain of gears, or a belt drive that ensures the simultaneous rotation of all rods. It is not difficult, you just need to understand its design. Before you start making a brazier with an electric drive with your own hands, you need to decide on its size. important point, since it depends on it what kind of engine is needed for such a design. Big system with rotating skewers will require a certain power: the more the number of moving units, the greater the losses and the less the engine resource. Sometimes it is convenient to slightly change the design and make a skewer for the barbecue with your own hands, which rotates only one axis, but is able to accommodate large quantity meat.

Do it yourself

You can buy a ready-made automatic grill, but they, as a rule, are either stationary and powered by a 220 V network, or have too few skewers. In order to get a design that meets the user's needs, you need to make an electric grill with your own hands. The easiest way is to modify an existing grill by installing an electric motor with a drive for skewers on it.

It is necessary to acquire the right materials and tools and get to work.

To create a barbecue with automatically rotating skewers, you will need:

Electric motor. Grinder with cutting and grinding wheels. Electric drill. Pulleys, sprockets or gears in the required amount (according to the number of skewers and gears of the reducer, if any) Drive belt, bicycle chain (depending on the selected drive system).

Selection of an electric motor

The best option is a 12V electric motor that has enough power to rotate the skewers, but does not require an excessively capacious power source.

It can be connected to the vehicle's on-board network, use rechargeable batteries, etc. You can use a motor from different devices, such as:

Electric grill Electric rotisserie Power windows or windshield wipers Microwave ovens Cordless screwdrivers, etc.

The use of motors powered by 220 V deprives the brazier of autonomy and excludes its use when going out into the countryside, so we will not consider this option.

Drive assembly

Skewers are inserted into special slots. On the one hand, they are nests into which skewers are inserted from above, on the opposite side - grippers for skewer rings mounted on the axis of gears or drive pulleys. There are many drive design options:

Bicycle chain with a drive sprocket on the engine axle and a row of driven sprockets on the skewer axles Drive belt zigzagged through a row of drive pulleys and a drive pulley on the engine axle Drive gear that transfers rotation to the chain of gears along the skewer axes.

The last option is more reliable - it does not create excessive load on the pulleys, therefore it is used most often.

Do you need an electric skewer drive?

There are mechanical barbecues in which all the skewers are rotated from one axis at once.

A handle is installed on it, with the help of which the working rods are set in motion. The design is convenient for its independence from power supply, but it requires the constant presence of a person. The electric drive for the barbecue frees a person, gives him the opportunity to do other things or just relax with friends.

Installation of an electric drive includes several steps:

Installation of an electric motor on the frame of the product. Creation of a chain of gears (pulleys, sprockets) transmitting rotational motion to each other. Installation of a drive belt or chain.

Application different types transfer somewhat changes the specifics of the actions performed, but general order works are not disturbed.

Instructions for making a chain of gears

The first gear is the driving gear, it is installed on the motor shaft.

It connects to the 2nd gear, to which all the others are sequentially connected. It is not recommended to violate the installation order and put the gears out of order, this can disrupt the ease of movement and create an unnecessary load. Unlike a system of pulleys or sprockets from a bicycle chain, the gears are all in mesh and therefore require the same sequential installation.

Spit preparation

In parallel with the manufacture of an electric drive, the question often arises - how to make a skewer for a barbecue with your own hands. Unlike a skewer, the skewer is designed for roasting large pieces of meat (for example, a piglet).

Therefore, it needs a sufficient lifting height above the coals and a wider working section. Usually the spit is installed in the transverse direction, which allows you to expand the heating zone over the entire working part. A separate motor with an attachment for the working rod must be installed, and a counterpart must be attached to the opposite side to support the free end.

Successful examples and options

Usually there are no special requirements for the appearance of barbecues.

However, there are often people who are equally demanding about the design of the device. For them, the important question is how to make a brazier that fully corresponds to the design of a summer cottage or has a certain shape. There are many examples and options on the web appearance barbecues made in different styles and forms.

You must choose the option most suitable for yourself before starting to make an electric brazier, so as not to alter ready product due to some inconsistencies.

The advantages of a mantle with an electric drive include:

No need for constant attention to the state of the kebabs. The juice escaping from the meat does not flow down onto hot coals, forming carcinogenic compounds, but evenly wets the surface of the pieces. Uniform heat treatment of meat from all sides. winter time there is no need to freeze near the barbecue. If you need to cook for a large number of guests, the work can be put on stream.

The disadvantages include:

The need for batteries. The use of an electric motor requires certain safety measures. The mode of frying with a certain speed of rotation requires skill and experience, at first the kebab may turn out to be undercooked.

Users note that a habit and some skill appear pretty quickly, but not everyone works well the first time.

What does the structure look like?

There are many design options, types of drive, design and design of barbecues. Outwardly, such a product is not too different from the usual type of barbecue, but the presence of a motor and a gear system immediately gives electric option constructions.

Cooking on fresh air becomes more and more popular. There is a brazier or barbecue on almost every summer cottage... And if kebabs are already a fairly traditional method of preparing meat, then the use of a skewer is still a rarity. This part allows you to roast large pieces of meat and even whole carcasses. It is not difficult to build such a device for a barbecue with your own hands.

Choosing the right rod is half the battle

Before you make a skewer and all the accessories for it, you need to prepare the material for work and decide on its length and shape.

Mostly used are designs of flat, square and round shapes. It all depends on what products are for. Boneless meat or minced meat products will be difficult to fry on a rounded skewer because it will slide off. It is more convenient to fry kebabs and small pieces on a flat bar. In order to cook a whole carcass without problems, it is best to take a square shape. With such a skewer, the meat will not slip and will be able to fry evenly from all sides.

The base of the skewer is a metal bayonet, and right choice material for him is a guarantee of successful use. For a bayonet, you should not choose low-melting alloys or use an old rod made of scrap metal. The best decision - stainless steel. In addition, to work on creating a spit you will need:

  1. Skewer handle.
  2. Roulette.
  3. Bulgarian.
  4. Metal rods.
  5. Pliers.
  6. Welding machine.

Making a skewer

Before you make a skewer with your own hands, you need to decide on its length and diameter. For cooking small pieces of meat, a 7 mm rod is suitable. To fry the carcass of a small animal, a rod device from 9 to 11 mm is suitable. If you plan to cook large pieces of meat, then you should prepare a rod with a diameter of 12 to 16 mm. As for the length, the grill spit is made the same length as the grill itself.

If there is no barbecue, then you should build a kind of stand that will be installed over the fire. A spit with a carcass is placed on it. For this, metal rods must have the same length, so that the load is evenly distributed. 4 prepared rods should be welded 2 crosswise. You will get grooves that will allow you to conveniently and firmly install the spit over the fire.

Grill spit drawing: minimum dimensions.

There is one important detailWhat distinguishes a skewer from a regular skewer is the handle. It is she who helps to turn the meat for even roasting. It can be made from any material at hand. A regular doorknob or bicycle handle can be used, or a piece of pipe that can be molded into a convenient shape for use.

The handle should be welded to the main structure of the spit. If there is nothing suitable at hand, then the handle can become folded end twig. The main thing is to create a lever. Thanks to this, the chef will be able to easily twist a rod of any shape, and the cooking process will take place without additional physical effort. You should carefully consider the size of this rod. The chef's hands should be kept at a safe distance from hot flames. Therefore, the piece of the rod that will protrude beyond the limiters must be at least 1 m in length.

The final stage in the construction of a skewer is considered to be equipping it with teeth that will hold the meat. On skewers made industriallyThese teeth are made with a clip and are removable for easy insertion of the carcass. For a structure that is being built by hand, one pair of teeth is made from metal rods. They should be bent and welded to the base. The teeth are firmly fixed from the side of the "blunt" end at a distance of 1/3 of the length. The spit is ready. Now at the summer cottage there will be not only a brazier built with your own hands, but also adaptations to it.

Electric drives

When cooking over an open fire or charcoal, we often encounter the fact that the meat already begins to burn on the outside, but inside it remains still raw. The process can be controlled by adjusting the distance to the heat, constantly piercing the meat with a sharp object to determine the degree of readiness. It is much easier to get an electric drive for a spit.

IN household appliances such a device is built in initially. In gas and electric stoves, ovens and grills, which may include a spit, there is an electric drive for rotation. Most often, this technique is equipped with a lateral electric drive.

Such a device may not be available. In such a case, it is desirable to separately, which will provide continuous rotation of the metal rod.

Types of electric drives for the spit

There are several types of these devices. The simplest of these is the fixed drive. It is designed to only start and stop operation and only rotates in one speed mode. The more expensive one is equipped with adjustable models professional technique... With its help, you can change the speed of rotation, and in some - adjust the distance to the heat and other parameters.

There are also automated and non-automated devices. Using the former, you can set the time and speed, speed, periods of operation and stop. The main difference between the models is the ability to work offline.

The spit itself is attached to the electric drive either through a special connector or using tongs. The first option is inconvenient in that it usually has an unregulated diameter and shape, i.e. it cannot be used for any other kind of metal rod. It usually comes with a specific skewer. For example, you need a bayonet less than a centimeter thick, and if you wanted to taste it, it’s difficult to use a 1.5 centimeter thick rod to prepare it for such a device.

Do-it-yourself electric drive for a spit

If you wish, you can make an autonomous electric drive yourself. You can use motors from old household appliances:

  • slabs;
  • microwave ovens;
  • ovens;
  • electric shashlik makers.

In addition to this, you will have to find a gearbox, without which it is impossible to convert the torque into the required efficiency. It is recommended that the entire set be wrapped in a refractory material to prevent ignition of the winding.

An electrically driven swivel is an indispensable addition to a pleasant outdoor recreation. With the help of it, you can forget about the culinary chores around the fire and completely surrender to your favorite activities!

You can make your outdoor recreation comfortable with an electric barbecue skewers. It is purchased ready-made or made independently. To do this, you need to arrange an electric drive in the brazier that performs mechanical work instead of a cook. It only remains to remove the meat from the fire in time so that it does not burn out.

Required tools

If there is a ready-made barbecue, then you will need:

  • Electric motor.
  • Drill.
  • Bulgarian.
  • Pulley.
  • Belt. The use of a bicycle chain is allowed.
  • Gears (about 8 pieces. Depends on the number of skewers).

A 12 V car drive or from a running toy is suitable as an electric motor. Gears are purchased ready-made or made independently from stainless steel.

Grill preparation

If there is no ready-made barbecue, then it is made independently:

  • Each plate is alternately clamped in a vice. Small holes (about 10 mm) are drilled with a drill. They should be at the bottom of the wall. The step is at least 3 cm. This will provide air supply to the fire. In the bottom, holes are made with smaller steps.
  • A structure is cooked from prepared plates with holes.
  • A corner is welded along the perimeter (at the seams).
  • A corner is used as legs. It is welded to the bottom of the structure.

Ancient ancestors preferred to spend time around the fire, preparing the mined meat on it. Tens of thousands of years later, preferences have not changed. What has changed is that you no longer need to get meat, and the process has become much more pleasant and comfortable.

Tip: Cuts are made in the upper part of the product. They are necessary for stacking the rotors. To determine the distance between the skewers, you need to measure the diameter of the prepared gears and take the length 0.5 cm longer.

Installation of the electric drive on the brazier

In order to make a system of electric rotation of skewers with your own hands, you just need to know the basics of physics from the school curriculum, as well as know the structure of the bicycle chain.

Steps for creating an electric drive:

  • Installing the engine.
  • Construction of a chain of gears.
  • Tensioning the chain.

The design of the engine uses a device powered by 12 V. It makes the simplest grill with an electric drive.

After choosing the drive, a gearbox is made, which transfers the frequency of the rotating moment to other devices. First, the pulley is attached to the motor shaft. And on the other side, a gear of a larger diameter is attached.

Tip: The chain between the gears is tightened after all parts are installed.

The structure is mounted on a plate. On the latter, a shaft with a bearing is pre-installed.

The finished engine is installed on the side wall of the structure from the outside. For this, metal hooks are welded. The device is suspended from them.

The complexity of the work lies in the fact that:

  • The structure is not easy to assemble.
  • The complexity of the repair arises.
  • Costly enough.
  • There is difficulty in finding the right part.

Video: do-it-yourself grill with electric skewers

It's good if you have the right electric drive for the barbecue. But if it is not, then its search will take a lot of time. If we talk about repairs, then this will cause a lot of trouble to the owner, who is not well versed in technology. It will be difficult to repair the breakdown.

Instructions for making a chain of gears

After fixing the 1st six, the rest are mounted:

  • On the motor shaft through the bearing, the 2nd gear is attached to the drive housing.
  • On the grill itself, the 3rd gear of a larger diameter is attached.
  • The 4th is soldered to the 3rd.
  • The 5 is attached to the 4th, and so on. The number of gears depends on the number of skewers.

On a metal plate, gears are attached one next to the other. The first gear drives the second, the second drives the third, and so on.

Due to the fact that a gear works for each skewer, rotation is provided. One gear transmits movement to the other. Due to this, the skewers rotate at the same speed.

When all gears are installed, the chains are tensioned:

  • Between the pulley with the 1st gear installed and the 2nd gear on the drive.
  • Horizontally through the gears, on the drive housing and 3rd gear.

Tip: The last gear is used to control the speed. The device can be configured to rotate the spit every 30 seconds. It is advisable not to overdo it. If the rotation is carried out less often than once every half a minute, then the meat will burn.

After installing the gears, you need to hide them with a metal strip. This will ensure the safe operation of the device.

Spit preparation

Before you make a skewer yourself, you need to decide on its parameters. Do not confuse a skewer with a skewer. The latter is intended for cooking small pieces of meat, fish or small chicken carcasses. But the skewer is used for frying pork carcasses, because the skewer will not support such a weight.

First of all, you need to consider the length. It should be larger than the width of the barbecue. The thickness must be at least 16 mm. This will allow the pork carcass to mature.

The thickness of the skewer varies from 7 to 10 mm. It depends on the size of the meat pieces. For small pieces, a rod with a diameter of 7 mm is suitable, and for large pieces (for roasting chicken) - 10 mm.

Skewer for. The racks of the structure can be attached to the brazier, and the spit itself can be attached to the electric drive

Then you need to make a handle for the spit. The easiest way is to bend the end of the rod or shape it in such a way that it is convenient to hold it.

The following forms of the skewer are used:

  • Rounded.
  • Square
  • Flat.

For small pieces of meat, a flat shape is suitable. And the square one is ideal for cooking minced meat dishes, since it will not allow the meat to slide off. But the rounded one is the least practical, because the meat can scroll and slide off the spit.

Tip: Using a serrated skewer will keep the meat firmly in place without letting it roll. The teeth are made from metal rods in the shape of an arc. They are then welded or screwed onto the spit.

Skewer drive

If you don't want to do it yourself or if you have difficulties in assembly, you can purchase a ready-made skewer drive. This mechanism is battery operated. He rotates the skewers slowly. The drive is a nozzle that is placed on any surface for roasting: a barbecue grill or bricks.

The device from the store is quite compact, so it can be taken outdoors without any problems.

The advantage of the finished mechanism is the ability to regulate the frequency and speed of rotation.

Do you need an electric skewer drive?

Many kebab experts argue that the electric rotation of meat on the grill is not necessary. After all, frying should occur in jerks. Therefore, the shish kebab ripens better if from time to time it is turned from one side to the other. But in reality this is a matter of taste for everyone.

It often happens when meat is roasted on the outside but remains moist on the inside. To prevent this from happening, you can use an automatic grill. A ready-made drive for skewers, like an electric drive for a barbecue, made by hand, will allow:

  • Fry the meat more evenly. Due to this, the juice does not flow out of the kebab. The dish will turn out to be very soft and juicy.
  • The fat from the meat will not drip onto the coals. Due to this, the kebab will not burn.
  • The cook will get rid of the monotonous mechanical work of rotating skewers.

Such an electric drive eliminates constant control over kebabs. The skewers are automatically rotated at a certain frequency. The cook will only have to prepare, marinate the meat and remove it from the skewer in time.

Automatic grill spit with a motor designed for both autonomous use in field conditions, in the forest, on the shore of the lake, the engine can operate from a conventional 12 volt battery, and in the absence of one, you can use a special handle and rotate the spit, with the lamb carcass attached to it, using the hand using the appropriate force, and in stationary conditions in everyday life, in the country, using an ordinary 220 volt outlet as a power source for an electric motor for a spit. This engine can operate both from a battery and from a 220 volt network through an adapter. The design of this spit is quite compact, its volume is approximately equal to the volume of two shoe boxes, the weight is 6.5 kg. The volume is 0.02 cubic meters. Engine power 50 watts. The spit itself is 160 centimeters long, consists of two parts, the spit diameter is 22mm. The spit can be adjusted both in height with the help of two hooks on the stands, and by pulling these stands out of the stop tripod. The delivery set also includes two clamping forks clamps, between which the product necessary for cooking is clamped. If you cook on a spit whole carcass say a lamb, then the hind legs can be fixed on a special lever with two clamps, coaxially mounted on the spit together with clamping forks, which contributes to a better attachment of the carcass on the spit. The delivery set also includes a special bracket for attaching the spine of the carcass to the spit. When placing a carcass on a spit with a bracket outside in the middle of the spine, pierce the carcass between the ribs and fix the bracket inside the carcass with two fastening lambs, through a plate with two holes. After which the spine of the lamb is drawn motionless to the spit, it does not unbend, and the carcass becomes elongated along the spit. The more the carcass looks like a cylinder, the more even the roast is.

All of the above parts are made of high quality stainless steel, in assembled they are compact enough, do not take up much space in your car and will help you to have a good rest in nature in the forest and in the country.
