For hardcore you have to take Black Edition, because it produces 1080p 120 fps and 4K at 30 fps, and its processor is more powerful than silver. But there is no screen.

The GoPro3 has a larger battery, but it doesn't benefit from that.

I have detailed the benefits of the Hero 3 Silver over the Hero 2. To achieve such high performance, the Hero 3 Black camera uses the new, more powerful and functional A7 platform from Ambarella, instead of the now younger Ambarella A5 used in the Hero 2 and Hero 3 Silver.
Ambarella is the world market leader in compact HD video processing systems on the fly, and the new platform does not disappoint - the manufacturer's claims are much higher than the previous model, even though the same Samsung 528MHz ARM 11 processor is used. Thanks to the use of the new platform , the bitrate of the “black” 3 is much higher than that of Silver, and is 45 Mb / s with the activated Protune mode. In the Silver version, this figure is 15Mb / s by default and 35 Mb / s in Protune.
These characteristics make the Hero 3 Black an absolutely indispensable camera for filming in high resolution, taking into account post-processing and interpolation in Full HD - after all, even professional digital cameras they are not capable of shooting in 2.7K or even more so in 4K, and they give out a maximum of 1920x1080 - at a much higher price. Needless to say, any other 2.7K and 4K cameras cost several times more?
But is such permission necessary if you are not going to release your film or video in ultra-high definition? And how! After all, shooting video in such formats is applicable not only for ultra-wide screens with increased resolution - by choosing this shooting mode, for example, you can stabilize the picture in the editor, crop the excess - and get a high-quality picture in FullHD 1080 format with a large margin.
Photo: more frames, better picture
In terms of photography, the GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition 12 megapixel camera also provides more possibilities than Silver or Hero 2.
In my opinion, the most interesting of them is the ability to take photos while recording video, and you can take photos manually, or set the interval mode, and then the camera will take photos at the same time as recording video with an interval of 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds. Also, lovers do not miss a single important point you will like the new burst mode, which allows you to do as many as 30 frames per second in automatic mode - and Silver, as we remember, produces only 10 frames per second in this mode.
Image quality
To test the new camera, I went to Krylatskoye, the practice ice rink of the Motorace X-Team / KTM team. Moreover, the legendary Anastasia Nifontova, the most famous Russian motorcycle racer, who performs in various disciplines - from the ring to cross-country, kindly agreed to act as a test pilot. I spent the second part of testing in the city, attaching the cameras to the car using standard suction cups.

What happened in the end? The picture that the Hero 3 Black produces is much more interesting than that of the Hero 2 or Hero 3 Silver. Thanks to advanced on-the-fly image processing technologies (namely, motion-compensated temporal filtering, or 3D MCTF), the Black Edition camera's picture is more stable and less noisy than the "younger" models.
In addition, Hero 3 Black has practically no rolling shutter - the effect of "jelly-like" distortion, familiar to all videographers.
Based on a new noise reduction algorithm, the noise filtering system is a real pride of GoPro and Ambarella engineers. Thanks to this technology, there is practically no noise in photos and videos even at high ISOs (the maximum ISO value for this platform is 6400 units).

To improve the picture, the "brains" of the camera determine the contrast of each pixel depending on the lighting. As a result, when shooting in cloudy weather the image looks, at first glance, a little underexposed, but on Hero 2 or Hero 3 Silver in such conditions the sky often knocks out into “white” - precious information is lost, and with it the image quality and the possibility of high-quality post-processing.
We can also say that in low light conditions Hero 3 Black produces a much better picture than Hero 2 or Hero 3 Silver, which is a significant step forward for GoPro (previous cameras shot in low light much worse) and a big advantage for customers. .

The Hero 3 Black Edition comes with a Wi-Fi remote control that controls up to 50 GoPro cameras at distances up to 180 meters. In terms of convenience and functionality when shooting in extreme conditions, it is far superior to smartphones with GoPro app. Why? There are several reasons for this.
Firstly, this is the reaction time - unlike the application, the dialogue with which occurs with some delay, the camera responds to the remote control instantly, allowing you to take shots exactly when you need them.
Secondly, the interface of the remote control is the same as that of the camera itself - two control keys and a screen that duplicates the usual “carousel” menu of the camera. Thanks to this, you can easily select the desired mode without wasting time learning a new interface.
Thirdly, the remote control is waterproof and can withstand immersion in water to a depth of up to three meters, which also greatly expands the range of its application. The remote can be hung on a key chain, attached to the handlebars of a bike - in general, this is a good and high-quality thing that allows you to get the most out of your GoPro camera.
The remote control is equipped with a rechargeable battery, recharged from USB, for which there is a special cord included in the kit. Please note that on the side of the remote control, the cord is fixed in a special slot of its own design using a lock, which is released by a latch on the back of the remote control.
Are there any disadvantages?
Despite the claimed lower power consumption of the new platform, with the same battery capacity, Hero 3 Black works in the shooting mode at a positive temperature for about an hour and a half, while the Silver version has a better figure - about two hours. Activating the Wi-Fi mode and using the camera in conjunction with the remote control has practically no effect on the operating time (-5 minutes), but using a smartphone or tablet with the GoPro app instead of the remote control reduces the operating time by about 15 minutes (not to mention such accessories, like an LCD screen). However, reduced operating time is not such a big price to pay for convenience and functionality. But it is necessary to have spare batteries with you for serious shooting.

To sum it all up, the Hero 3 Black offers more extreme photo and video capabilities than any other action camera today. For professional use, which involves editing and processing footage, Hero 3 Black has no competitors at all for similar money - in terms of shooting resolution and security, the camera is ahead of all other cameras, including professional DSLRs. These characteristics have already been appreciated not only by extreme sportsmen, but also by professional film and television operators who massively buy “black” - for example, at my master class at the Moto-Park exhibition, the guys from Channel 1 were very interested in the features of these cameras Russian TV.
Obviously, the continuation of the GoPro story is not far off - after all, Ambarella has already introduced the new A9 platform - built on a 1GHz dual-core processor, delivering 30 fps in 4K, 120 fps in 1080p, and 60fps in HDR 1080p mode.
