Since autumn, we have been digging a ditch along the length of the beds, putting all the waste there. grass. plant residues (You can do it in the spring, it's just more laborious, there are enough other things), water it with Baikal, fall asleep with a slide, form a ridge of arbitrary length, 1 m wide at the base, the higher the higher. so much the better (in practice it turns out about 20 cm), we make a bevel to the top of the bed so that the upper base is about 80 cm wide (like a grave, ugh. ugh, ugh, it won’t be said by night). In the spring we make indentations in the form of plates in the garden in a checkerboard pattern. we plant corn seedlings there, cover tightly with LIGHT! film. Will have to tinker. to push through the slots, without breaking, shoots of seedlings. On the sides, we firmly press the film to the ground (we sprinkle it with a small layer of earth from the row spacing). Water during the summer only in the holes in the slot, without water, the weeds will die under the film over time. When sprouts appear, namely after the second leaf appears, the seedlings need to be thinned out, leaving one stronger plant in each hole. In the initial period of growth, until the first above-ground stem node is formed, the growth of corn is very slow. Then the growth of the culture gradually increases and reaches its maximum before heading. And after flowering, the growth of corn in height stops.
Corn is valuable vegetable crop with very high nutritional and palatability. In addition to a large amount of mineral salts, corn grains also contain other important elements. And in terms of fat, carbohydrates and dry matter content, corn is superior to green peas, beans and cauliflower.

Well, "glutton" corn will take away nutrients, and then, not all cucumbers grow in vines, there are bush ones. I wouldn't. Corn is very impoverishing the soil.
Crop care consists in easy hilling of the plant (after the formation of 6-7 leaves), loosening of row spacing and weeding. For more rapid development of the roots of the plant, after each rain, you need to loosen the soil crust well. It is necessary to water the corn once a week, wetting the soil layer by at least 20 cm. During the second period of crop development, namely 7 days before the panicle is thrown out, the greatest need for watering is observed. This period lasts about a month. And when the normal shape and size of the grain is reached, this need disappears.
Corn is a thermophilic plant and prefers fertile soils preferably rich in calcium. It is best to plant corn on light or medium loams, as well as chernozems, dark chestnut and floodplain soils. The soil must be well water and breathable. A place for growing crops should be selected sunny and protected from the winds. The best predecessors for corn are potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, peas and cabbage. You can also plant it after squash and zucchini.

Earlier than 3.5 months from germination, corn has never grown up so that it can be eaten. And even then, if the summer is not cold and not rainy. The most correct count from planting to use is 4 months. Just keep in mind that corn is thermophilic, it needs even more heat than tomatoes need. We have to plant it after June 10, and at first under thin lutrasil for the night.

For corn, potassium supplementation is very important. So, potassium chloride (40 g), ammonium nitrate (20 g) and superphosphate (20 g) should be added to a bucket of water. This amount of solution must be divided into two wells. It is advisable to repeat this procedure every 2 weeks.

Planting of corn begins after the danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature at the planting depth has reached 8-10 °C. Optimum temperature corn growth - 18 - 24 °C. But small frosts down to minus 3 ° C are not terrible for seedlings. If during the flowering period of corn the air temperature is above 30 ° C, then this has a bad effect on fertilization, which entails a decrease in overall yield, as well as a deterioration in the quality of corn cobs.

Backstage from any culture is intended primarily to protect cucumbers from the wind. Therefore, it is advisable to plant across the prevailing winds. I plant only two rows of cucumbers, so I have wings on the edges of the garden. Firstly, cucumbers do not oppress, and secondly, it is easy to spud corn later. But corn must at least be germinated, and better seedlings grow in a greenhouse (but this is of course aerobatics). The corn grows slowly, and the cucumber quickly and begins to jam the corn with its mass. And to be honest, I prefer backstage from mallow or phacelia. When the corn cobs reach their milky maturity, they can be harvested. Harvesting continues for about two weeks.
Two weeks before planting corn, the soil must be dug up and complex fertilizers applied to it. You can plant corn with seedlings, or you can plant seeds directly into the soil. For seedlings, the crop should be sown in April, and then transplanted into the soil in June. Planting with seeds in the ground is also carried out in June at a soil temperature sufficient for planting. Corn seeds before planting should be warmed in the sun for 4 to 5 days, and then soaked in warm water. This will speed up the emergence of shoots. The soil before planting seeds must be loosened, leveled and well moistened. The scheme for planting corn is 30x50 cm, the seeds are sown to a depth of 2 to 5 cm, 2-4 seeds are placed in the hole. After sowing, the pits are covered with fertile dry soil and watered again. It is advisable to cover the crops plastic wrap, which will contribute to better heating of the soil and better seed germination. In addition, the film will protect the seedlings from possible frosts.

Corn, then two rows of peas (cucumbers are possible, I plant the Nezhinsky variety) and again a row of corn in a checkerboard pattern in relation to the first row.
If there is a lot of space, you can grow a row of corn in a plantation through two cucumbers (this is how my mother does in the village), but again, you need a lot of space because of the need to hill up the corn. The roots of cucumbers grow widely, and in no case should they be damaged, this reduces susceptibility to diseases and generally reduces the yield.
Without problems, I sow the seeds soaked before spitting immediately into the ground in the second half of May (according to the weather). Top with plastic cups. Harvest - late August-early September.
When danger of frost has passed. I never plant seedlings, I don’t toil. Of course, soak the seeds before planting.
In middle lane In order for the cobs to ripen, corn is grown through seedlings in cups - they are sown with seeds soaked in mid-April in cups. With the onset of stable heat - at the time of sowing cucumbers in open ground- this is June 2-5, seedlings from cups are transplanted into open ground. It is advisable to place it so that it does not obscure other crops - on the north or east side of the site. If you use corn as a backstage, you can plant cucumbers on the south side of the corn strip. They will trudge through the corn, and it will protect them from the cold. I tried. Great neighborhood. You can plant it backstage - in rows, and again plant cucumbers on one side of the backstage. In this case, the soil needs little watering, corn foliage will protect the soil from drying out and protect the cucumbers not only from the cold, but also from the scorching sun.

Before talking about the most suitable varieties of corn for growing, you need to consider what types of this crop are. There are flint, sugar, pop, dent, and starchy corn.

  • Silicon corn is considered the most common. Most often, varieties of this species are grown for grain production. Use the grains of this plant for the production of corn grits, flakes and sticks.
  • No less common is dent corn. Varieties of this species are used to obtain grains, which are subsequently used in the production of alcohol and flour. If you grow cattle or poultry in your country house, you should plant such corn as feed.
  • If you want to use corn for table purposes, then it is better to choose the sugar type. Usually the grains of such corn are very sweet and juicy. It is also ideal for conservation.
  • Popcorn came to us relatively recently. It is from its grains that the world-famous popcorn is made.

Popcorn for popcorn production

Naturally, if you decide to plant corn for cooking or canning in your country house, it is better to focus on sweet species, the most famous varieties of which include:

  • Dobrynya, the ripeness of the grains of this variety occurs literally 9 weeks after sowing. The good news is that this variety is early ripe, because corn seeds can be safely planted even if the soil temperature has warmed up to only 10 degrees. Each plant produces about two cobs with sweet and large grains.
  • Another well-known variety is Early Golden 401, the growing season lasts about 3 months. This hybrid variety is characterized by tasty grains suitable for cooking or preservation, and Early Golden 401 is also resistant to many diseases.
  • The growing season of Lakomka 121 lasts no more than 75 days. The variety is characterized by good yields, minimal care and disease resistance. The cob reaches a length of about 20 cm, the grains are slightly elongated. This variety Ideal for cooking, canning and even freezing.
  • Ice nectar is also considered popular, main feature which are incredibly sweet grains.

Before we start preparing seed material, you need to say a few words about preparing the soil for planting corn. When choosing a place in the country, it is worth remembering that this plant is thermophilic and photophilous, it does not like low-lying and dark areas. They start preparing the site in the fall - dig up the ground and add phosphorus there and in the amount indicated on the package.

If the soil in the country is characterized high level acidity, add lime at the rate of 1–2 kg per square meter soil. After two weeks, the earth is again dug up, removing weeds. There are two options for planting corn - using grains and seedlings.

If you decide to choose the first option, then you need to prepare the grains before planting. First, warm them up at a temperature of about 35 degrees for 5 days. Additionally, soak the grains for 10 minutes in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, then rinse and proceed to planting. Literally after 10 days, the first shoots will begin to appear. By the way, before planting corn grains, it is additionally recommended to harden. For two weeks before planting, place them in a solution with slurry, while the solution must be heated to a temperature of 40 degrees. To prepare the solution, mix the slurry with water in a ratio of 1:5.

Soaking corn seeds before planting

You should not make the solution more concentrated, because the grains in it can “burn out”. Two days after drying, the seeds are placed in the refrigerator for a couple of days. Another way to harden seed material is to use blue vitriol. In 10 liters of water (temperature about 45 degrees), dilute only 1.5 g of vitriol and 200 ml of slurry. Dip the grains in the solution for 12 hours. After that, the seed material is removed from the solution, covered with a cloth and kept at a temperature of about 25 degrees until hatching. Then put the seed material in the refrigerator for two weeks.

The second method of growing in the country is with the help of seedlings. This option is suitable for planting a plant in northern regions, where sowing with grains does not allow corn to ripen, since the ears reach their ripeness only 70 days after planting. To get seedlings, plant corn seeds in peat cups, filling the containers with a nutrient mixture of peat, sand and compost in a ratio of 1: 1: 2 in advance.

You can also add ash - for 10 liters of the mixture, only 400 g. In the case of such processing, the subsequent care of the culture will be minimal. The depth of planting grains is 3–4 cm, after which it is better to sprinkle the seed material with earth. Two weeks before planting seedlings in the ground, water the seedlings.

Planting seedlings or seeds is usually carried out in early May. To correctly determine the time of work, measure the temperature of the soil - it should not be below 12 degrees at a depth of 10 cm. The best way to plant corn is in rows. At the same time, the distance between rows should be at least 50 cm, between seedlings or grains in a row - about 30 cm. Make holes 7 cm deep and put 3-4 grains (or one seedling) into the dimples. If planting seeds, sprinkle them with two layers of earth: first wet and then dry.

Planting corn seeds

The best corn planting pattern is 4 rows. This is due to the fact that this plant is monoecious, that is, it has not only male, but also female characteristics. Therefore, with a multi-row planting, a rather rapid cross-pollination is carried out, without which there will be no harvest. If you adhere to the planting pattern in one row, then pollination will have to be carried out independently. To do this, you need to shake out the pollen with a flower, collect it in a bag and pour it over the germinating cobs. To harvest gradually, sow the plant in a conveyor way, maintaining an interval of two weeks.

Those who long time they grow corn in the country, they advise planting cucumbers near the plants. According to gardeners, this will increase the yield and extend the time for harvesting cobs until the frost. For example, you can plant corn on the same bed, and cucumbers between plants, and some gardeners generally plant several grains of corn and cucumbers in one hole.

As gardeners note, this planting of corn has advantages both for the crop itself and for cucumbers - the latter will use the corn stalks as support, and the cucumbers will "support" the ears of corn.

Growing cucumbers with corn

What other plants does corn combine with? It is better to grow corn in the beds, where before there was cabbage, peas, tomatoes, potatoes, beans. Such plants do not have common diseases and pests, which means that if cucumbers get sick, corn will not get sick, and vice versa. Also, corn goes well with beans - in this case, corn will become a quality support for the plant. In addition, peas and beans lead to the accumulation of nitrogen in the soil, which positively affects the growth and yield of corn.

But if celery, millet or beets grew on the site, it is better not to grow corn.

In fact, caring for this culture is quite simple. It is important to remember a few important requirements that must be observed.

  • It is very important to provide plants with good lighting. That is why they should be planted in open sunny areas away from trees and tall shrubs. Also remember to constantly remove weeds around young plants.
  • Second important point- full-fledged watering, which should be, though not too private, but plentiful. So, the soil under each plant should get wet to a depth of at least 10 cm. If the plants are not properly watered, the corn kernels will be very small and dry.
  • We should not forget about feeding corn. 3 weeks after planting the seeds in the ground, feed the plants with organic fertilizers. You can use either an aqueous solution of mullein (in a ratio of 1:10), or bird droppings. Also, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers should be applied to the soil.
  • Care also consists in the removal of lateral stepchildren, which are usually formed during the period of active growth of the plant. If they are not cut in time, the stepchildren will take all the nutrients and water for themselves, which will negatively affect the quality of the crop.

By the way, if you weed weeds, you don't have to throw them away. Spread the weed around the corn stalks. This will create a layer of mulch that will make the corn grow much better. Do not forget that even the most quality care cannot guarantee the absence of pests. That is why it is so important to know how to deal with pests so that they do not damage the plants and spoil the crop. Let's start with diseases, most of which are carried by insects - corn and swedish flies, meadow moths.

Corn pests

The first thing you need to do is treat the plants with suitable insecticidal solutions. From some pests, such as the Swedish fly, soaking the seeds before seedlings in a solution of potassium permanganate saves. Also, a disease such as bacteriosis can fall on corn. Most The best way struggle - processing of seed in an antibacterial solution (potassium permanganate). But to protect plants from bedbugs, use soybeans by planting it next to corn. Also, as a protective agent, use Vitavax in which you can soak the seeds. Just follow the instructions and you will not be afraid of pests.

The most wonderful time is this. Cobs begin to be harvested when the stigmas dry out. This usually happens in early September. To check the ripeness of the grains, bend the leaf on the cob and evaluate the color of the grains - they should be bright yellow. It is also worth paying attention to the tassel of the cob, which should be dry. But it must be remembered that early ripe varieties collected earlier, starting from the end of July.

Harvest time depends on taste. Some people like unripe corn, which can be used for cooking - the grains will be very soft and pleasant to taste. After harvesting, cobs retain their freshness for about 20 days.

A delicious crispy cucumber from your garden is not only tasty, but also very healthy. Still, purchased cucumbers are worse than a fresh cucumber just picked. We don’t have a greenhouse yet, so I grow cucumbers in open ground e.

Since cucumbers like to trail along the support, I grow a natural support for them - corn. Cucumbers can lag, corn, when watered, also grows good. After all, cucumbers need regular watering, so I provide them with water all the time.

Both cucumbers and corn are heat-loving crops, so I sow them at the same time. I make holes and throw in 3 cucumber seeds and 3 corn seeds. Be sure to soak the corn before planting. Its grains dry out a lot during the winter, and when sown with dry seeds, it will germinate for a long time, if at all. After germination and during the first weeding, I remove extra plants, leaving 2 sprouts in each hole. I make the distance between them half a meter, so they will not be cramped.

As a rule, cucumbers form an ovary on lateral shoots. Therefore, I pinch the main lash over the 5th leaf. At first, a few empty flowers appear, and then you can already see how small cucumbers are tied.

With good watering, cucumbers new ones appear constantly.

Here I want to dwell on watering in more detail. It happens that cucumbers are well watered, fed, grow remarkably, but there are no fruits. As they say: - “The bush is fattening”. In this case, you need to stop watering for a while, until the leaves seem to be tied a little. And immediately the ovary will begin to appear. Then watering and fertilizing can be resumed.

For constant fruiting, it is very important to constantly harvest. I try to pick cucumbers every day, at least every other day. Cucumbers hide very well under the leaves, you will definitely miss some. I also collect deformed cucumbers, if any. If you leave overgrowths on a bush, then new fruits simply will not start, the bush will give all its strength to old cucumbers. But I still leave a few pieces for seeds. I grow varietal cucumbers, not hybrids, so I can collect my seeds.

Growing cucumbers on corn- a well-known old trick that allows you to get beautiful harvest this culture without unnecessary hassle with the installation of trellises and a garter. And a few delicious and juicy corn cobs, harvested from cucumber patch, will bring an additional sense of joy and satisfaction from working with the earth.

In the middle zone of our country, they are sown in open ground no earlier than May 15th. Optimal schemes the plantings of this culture are described in detail in, so I will not dwell on this issue. I will only note that with the joint cultivation of cucumbers and corn, it is advisable not to make the row spacing less than a meter so that the plants do not crowd each other. Simultaneously with the main crop, corn is sown in the center of the beds every 30-40 centimeters.

Within a week and a half after sowing, the first sprouts appear. Then it is necessary to pour a handful of humus into each hole, and mulch the entire garden bed with grass cuttings with a layer of about 10 centimeters. Thanks to this simple operation, you not only suppress the development of weeds, but also reduce the amount of mandatory watering.

Corn and cucumbers in the joint develop very amicably, competing with each other in the growth rate. As soon as tendrils begin to form on plants, cucumber wattle must be regularly sent to corn. Thus, you do not need to equip the garden with any special devices like garters.

In order for cucumbers grown on corn to always bring a bountiful harvest of greens, it is enough to follow five simple rules:

  1. Never water plants in the evening as high humidity and a decrease in temperature provoke the rapid spread of powdery mildew.
  2. Before the formation of the third true leaflet, water the garden bed with cucumbers with exceptionally warm water (25-32 degrees). Cold water causes growth retardation and reduces plant immunity. After the fourth leaflet and until the end of the harvest, cucumbers continue to irrigate only in the morning, but more moderately and under the roots.
  3. Don't neglect feeding! The first feeding is given to plants at the stage of 3-4 true leaves with a solution of mullein (1:10) or chicken manure(1:20). The next time top dressing is applied during flowering: 50 grams of ammophos or nitrophos per 10-12 liters of water. At the same time, they are carried out with a solution of trace elements, taking 1 gram of manganese, boron, zinc and copper per bucket of water.
  4. . Cucumbers are not prone to intensive branching, they have few side shoots. Therefore, in the 4-leaf phase, you should pinch the top: then new shoots will appear from each leaf and the yield will increase several times.
  5. Loosen the soil. Before laying the third leaf, the soil is loosened between the rows to a depth of about 10 centimeters. In the future, loosening is carried out to a depth of no more than 5 centimeters, since the roots of this culture are located very superficially.

And remember that for the successful growth of cucumbers, heat, light and water are equally important, and always non-chlorinated. Strict adherence to the above recommendations guarantees you good harvests delicious cucumbers in almost any summer (with the exception, perhaps, of a very unfortunate tropical plant for this).

The main advantage of growing cucumbers on corn is the extension of the cucumber season until at least mid-September. Thanks to vertical culture, plants are less susceptible to fungal diseases, which often cause premature aging. And root mulching keeps the ground cool on cool August and September nights, further improving your chances of enjoying fresh homemade cucumbers well into mid-autumn.

Many summer residents have heard that there are joint landings vegetables, in which one culture has a positive effect on others. Tips from experienced gardeners.

For cucumbers, such schemes also exist.

Cucumbers on corn

With such a neighborhood, the yield of cucumbers increases by 5-6 times, and they bear fruit until the very frost. Corn, by the way, also noticeably adds to the crop.

A bed for such a tandem is made three-row. Germinated corn grains are sown in the middle one so that they have time to overtake cucumbers in growth. The two extreme rows are made at a distance of 30 cm from the central one, and a distance of 50-60 cm is maintained between cucumbers in a row.

As the lashes of cucumbers grow, they are directed to the stems of the neighboring cereal. With this method, greens do not lie on the ground, but hang on corn like apples. And as a result, they do not rot. Bilateral planting of cucumbers does not allow corn to fall under the weight of lashes on one side.

By the way, squash and melons can be grown in the same way. And instead of corn, sunflower is quite suitable.

Backstage from tall plants, even planting cucumbers in open ground among beets and parsnips contribute not only to the accumulation of carbon dioxide, but also to the retention of moisture vapor in the space between the wings. For cucumbers, after all, it is of great importance not only to maintain soil moisture, but also to increase the relative humidity of the air.

Amateur gardener S. Minin writes:

I want to tell you about my experience of growing cucumbers, pumpkin and melons according to the method that I call<Содружество>. For 10 years now I have been sowing cucumbers along with corn or sunflowers and do not regret it.

With such a neighborhood, the yield of cucumbers increases five to six times, they bear fruit until the very frost. Corn, by the way, also responds to this method of cultivation with a very noticeable increase in yield. I sow cucumber seeds on a wide bed 20 cm high according to the scheme 30x60 or 30x50 cm, along the edges of the bed. And between them I sow corn, previously sprouted, so that it has time to overtake cucumbers in growth.

Before planting, I make a shallow furrow in the center of the bed, and lay out corn grains in it, two or three at once per hole. When they germinate, I spud and remove weak sprouts.

As the cucumbers grow, I direct the lashes directly at the corn. It is worth hooking a cucumber leaf on a corn leaf - and the whip itself will begin to braid the corn stem. No tapestries and cucumber garters are needed.

The fruits hang on corn like apples, and do not lie on the ground, which means they do not rot in a rainy summer. Bilateral planting of cucumbers does not allow corn to fall under the weight of greens on one side.

What is the secret of the favorable community of these plants, I can not explain. But the fact is there. Of the cucumbers, I liked the varieties Cascade, Lord, Farmer, Othello the most. Corn is the best - Kuban canning and Super sweet. Both varieties ripen well, give full-bodied cobs.

I plant squash varieties Disc and Orange along the perimeter of potato beds, and in front of each squash bush at a distance of 10-15 cm I plant corn. As a result, the squash does not climb on the potato and does not interfere with its processing, while the fruiting is so plentiful, which I have never seen anywhere else.

Now about melons.

For several years I tried to grow them, but nothing worked. Sometimes there were no ties. But 2 years ago, for the first time, I ate melons, and planted them again together with corn.

I plant according to the same scheme as cucumbers, but I leave only the first two or three ovaries on the lashes. I cut off the rest: they won’t have time to ripen anyway. Of the varieties, I give preference to Pineapple, Sweet Pineapple. This summer I will try to grow watermelons using the same method.
