Greetings, my dear readers.

Often, after sticking wallpaper with your own hands, some problems arise. The most common nuisance is the diverging joints between the panels. I will tell you why this is happening and how to fix the situation.

For what reasons can joints diverge

When paper-based wallpaper panels get wet when they are smeared with glue, they swell and change linear dimensions. This applies to both fully cellulose material and textile on a paper backing.

Non-woven fabrics also swell, but to a lesser extent. Thus, the width of a standard material of 53 cm increases by 3–5 mm when it is moistened.

Without experience and knowledge about the behavior of the types of panels, you will not be able to accurately determine the results of wallpapering. In the course of work, the seams can look great. But after the canvases dry out, they shrink, trying to return to their original dimensions. At the same time, their width will become smaller, which will lead to the opening of the joints.

The reasons why seams are visible on non-woven paper wallpaper:

A photo Description

Reason 1

Too little or too much adhesive was applied to the edges of the blades.

Reason 2

The ground was poorly prepared. For example, not primed or puttied.

Reason 3

The brand of glue is not suitable for the type of wallpaper used, or the composition was not prepared correctly.

Reason 4

Facing dried in violation of temperature, humidity and other conditions in the room. The manufacturer's instructions notice that the wallpaper does not like drafts very much.

How to choose the best glue

To repair the joints between the wallpaper, you need to choose the best glue for the seams. It doesn't have to be the same brand as you used in the original job. The main thing is that it matches the type of finish.

The most popular types of adhesives are shown in the table:

Image Brand of glue and its characteristics
Polyex-Rash/Universal.

The composition is used for paper and all other types of wallpaper. It is produced in the form of a dry composition. The price of the package is 150 rubles.

Metylan/Vinyl-Premium.

The material is used for vinyl panels. Available as a dry mix. The package costs 900 rubles.

Metylan/Vlizelin-Ultra-Premium.

Metylan/Universal-Premium.

Suitable for all types of wallpaper, including paper. Produced as a dry mix. It costs 500 rubles.

Aquadecor-Ultra.

The material is designed for glass fabrics. Available as a ready-to-use liquid. The cost of packing is 150 rubles.

Repairing seams on wallpaper

If the seams on the wallpaper have parted, then most amateur builders prefer to completely re-glue the finish. However, there is an alternative to this. The situation can be corrected with the help of restoration.

Prepare for repair:

  • a wallpaper strip that matches in length and width with the joint between the panels;
  • adhesive composition, it must be contained in a tube with a thin tip (the solution can also be applied with a syringe);
  • small roller;
  • cloth napkins.

Action algorithm:

  1. Carefully spread the adhesive over the joint. Apply the composition carefully so that it lays evenly.

  1. Attach a wallpaper strip to the joint, press down with your fingers and straighten. Next, roll the area with a roller.
  2. Lastly, wipe off excess adhesive with a dry cloth.

It is possible to remove the seams on the wallpaper after gluing in this way if they are located on inconspicuous sections of the walls or if the finish is painted in a light color.

Repair will not succeed if dark panels are pasted in conspicuous places.

Seam dyeing

If the panels are colored, then the joints can be repaired by coloring them.

For this purpose, prepare:

  • gouache or pigmented sealant;
  • brush;
  • small water tank;
  • gauze.

Restoration algorithm:

  1. Mix a little dye with the liquid, so that the resulting composition has a creamy consistency. When choosing a sealant, do not dilute it with water, it is already ready for use.
  2. Distribute with a brush coloring composition at the junction between the panels. Do this carefully so as not to stain the lining. If this does happen, promptly remove the paint with gauze.
  3. Wait for the restoration layer to dry. If necessary, apply paint a second time.

How to correctly glue the finish

So that you do not have problems with wallpaper seams, you need to correctly glue the finish the first time.

It's done like this:

  1. First of all, cut out the panels. Above and below, based on the characteristics of the patterns on the material, leave a spare 3-4 cm.

  1. Lay the piece of cloth face down on the thoroughly washed floor. Use a large flat brush to spread the adhesive.
  2. Fold the cut and wait the time specified by the manufacturer for the impregnation of the wallpaper. In this case, you can prepare other panels.

  1. Glue the prepared cut to the base in the corner next to the door or window. The stock of material on their side should be 3-4 cm.
  2. Using clean and dry gauze or a roller, straighten the finish and press it to the base, simultaneously expelling air from under the canvas.
  3. Trim off excess wallpaper at the corners and at the top.
  4. Glue the second piece of wallpaper with an overlap of 3-4 mm on the first panel. So the joints will not disperse when the finish dries.
  5. Revet all walls in the described way.

Here are some tips to help you hang wallpaper the right way.:

  1. The panels must be glued to a leveled, primed and puttied base.

  1. The brand of glue must match the selected type of wallpaper.
  2. Keep in mind that gluing methods different types cloths are different. For example, when using non-woven wallpaper, it is not they that are smeared with glue, but the base. Sometimes it is necessary to apply a fixing composition both on the walls and on the panels.
  3. It is impossible to glue wallpaper without seams, that is, joint to joint. Cloths need to overlap each other. Then they will not disperse after drying.
  4. Do not iron seams with strong pressure. You will squeeze out the glue, which will moisten the front side of the canvases. This will erase the paint layer on the finish.
  5. Finishing work should be carried out in warm room and low humidity.
  6. Until the lining is completely dry, do not open doors and windows, heating equipment and air conditioning.

Conclusion

With a lack of experience and knowledge, you can paste wallpaper with errors. This will cause their seams to open. The situation can be corrected in several ways. If the restoration fails, then the finish will have to be re-pasted. To prevent this from happening, the wallpaper must be glued correctly from the very beginning.

When conducting repair work everyone imagines that the result will be a beautiful, renovated apartment. And a lot of it depends on the quality of wallpapering. But often it turns out quite the opposite. The next morning after pasting the walls with wallpaper, it turns out that they have parted or peeled off at the joints. The first question that is currently of interest is how to fix everything and how to glue peeled wallpapers and joints? This article will describe the causes of such troubles and how to fix them.

Why do seams appear on wallpaper?

Absolutely all wallpapers, regardless of whether they are on paper or textile basis, have the property of swelling when exposed to moisture, in this case glue. And it can be seen even with the naked eye. So, for example, if the wallpaper is half a meter wide and wet with glue, they increase by several millimeters. Consequently, nothing is noticeable when pasting, and after drying, the paper acquires its own original view. As a result, gaps appear between the sheets and visible bare wall. To prevent this, it is not recommended to strongly soak the used piece of wallpaper. When the sheet is sufficiently wet, it must be immediately pasted.

It is important to follow the instructions and give them the time for impregnation that is indicated. When sticking sheets, you must strictly observe the impregnation time of each sheet and prepare only the amount that you can stick on in the same period of time.

paper borders

And you can do it differently. If you have imagination, you can use paper borders. The main task in this case is the selection of the border itself, which will be suitable both in color and in the structure and material used in its production. You can also mask the areas of discrepancies with all kinds of ribbons, curtains. And then make from the same material, for example, a frame for a photograph or a picture. It will turn out very beautiful and original. No one will even understand that this was done later, everyone will assume that everything was originally supposed to be so.

Be wary of pencils and markers, with a strong application, the pigment may show through on the wallpaper.

Currently, there are many technologies that can be used to correct various wall defects, including the resulting gaps between sheets of wallpaper. But it is better to immediately follow all the rules when carrying out work and take into account all the features of the acquired type of wallpaper, than then look for ways to hide the joints or make them invisible. Write your wallpaper repair options in the comments.

Home renovation is always a joy, even in spite of many difficulties. Wallpapering the walls is, in fact, the easiest way to make an easy redecorating improving housing. However, not always the picture in the imagination before finishing and the realities after the match. Agree, it is very unpleasant when various shortcomings come out. How to avoid disappointment? Of course, do everything according to the recommendations, respecting the proportions, but it is also important to be informed about possible problems. Then their decision will not become a stumbling block and will not cause irritation.

So, let's talk about what to do if the wallpaper has diverged at the joints. For this, let's analyze main question why joints appear on the wallpaper, is it possible to avoid this when pasting, what to do if, immediately after gluing, the wallpaper at the joints dispersed or peeled off.

You will learn about:

The reasons

And to begin with, consider the main reasons why the joints of the wallpaper become visible the next day after finishing. The most common causes are as follows:

Softening and swelling

Simple physics teaches us from the school bench that paper tends to increase in volume and size under the influence of moisture. It follows that the joints between the wallpaper when they dry can increase by 3-5 mm, and this is quite a lot. Inflicting adhesive composition onto the paper web, it will increase in volume. Putting it back to back and not considering given fact, you can get a gaping gap with a wall clearance. How to avoid? It's simple: after the wallpaper is carefully smeared with glue, you need to immediately apply it to the wall. Every minute they will swell even more, which means that after drying they will decrease.

In addition, this is especially true for paper canvases: cellulose tends to swell unevenly. That is, as a result, the joints can converge and diverge, taking away all the accuracy of the finish. Of course, there is less chance of getting ugly joints on vinyl wallpaper. Since their base contains polymer materials, which do not change their size too much after soaking.

However, there is one more important point this is glue. Too much of it also leads to excessive swelling of the canvas. Therefore, special brushes and rollers are often recommended for applying the adhesive, preventing an excess layer.

For example, if you buy non-woven wallpaper, glue does not need to be applied to the canvas at all. It is enough to smear the wall. Thanks to this, there will be no strong expansion of the wallpaper. This means that the gluing of wallpaper joints will be more even and smooth.

Wallpaper

Sometimes the problem may not be in the finishing technology, but in the material itself. And then it will be very difficult to fix the joints of the wallpaper. This is because rolls can be from different series. Then their joints will simply be different. For example, one edge is darker or lighter. When the roll is folded, the defect is not visible, when pasting it is not paid attention to, but after drying it is already difficult to fix anything.

Therefore, precautions must be taken already when choosing wallpaper, namely: it is necessary to make sure that the canvases belong to the same series. If this does not happen, all the consequences will already be unpredictable. In order to check the series, you need to carefully look at the liner on the roll. Usually all information is indicated there. The price of wallpaper, of course, can also affect problems with joints, but you can’t sin specifically on inexpensive canvases, since the probability of seeing uneven joints in expensive wallpapers is almost the same.

Another problem with wallpaper is the damaged end of the canvases. In this case, it will not be surprising if the wallpaper at the joints peeled off after gluing, or torn noticeable stripes turned out. Damage to the end of the wallpaper may be due to improper transportation. If these wallpapers were purchased from a store, they were stored vertically on top of each other, resulting in wrinkled edges. However, there is also the option of damage to the soldering. The rolls at the joints are sealed with polyethylene very strongly, as a result of which some protection is formed. If the soldering is damaged, there is no guarantee that the edges of the wallpaper are not torn. An important conclusion follows from this: rolls must be chosen very carefully, paying attention to:

  • batch number (series);
  • the integrity of the package (especially along the edges of the roll);
  • no deformation of the roll and no visible damage to the wallpaper inside the package.

What to do if the joints are already visible?

There are two options here: either re-paste the new wallpaper, or slightly change the interior by adding moldings to the trim. There are vertical narrow stripes, similar to modeling, various options execution. They can be a good decoration for the joints and decorate the room in an original way. Therefore, you should not panic.

If the wallpaper peels off at the joints, this can be fixed with the same glue. It is enough to gently apply the composition under the canvas with a syringe and iron it well with a roller or towel. For a better and more reliable result, you can use PVA glue for joints.

Then you get a minimum of costs and a maximum of benefit from wallpapering walls. Another recommendation in the end may be the choice of pattern. It is advisable to give preference to those canvases that do not have clear inscriptions or pictures that need to be joined. Then you can complete all the work quickly enough and enjoy the finish.

Many have encountered a problem when, when pasting walls, the joints are perfect, and after drying, gaps appear between the sheets, which worsen appearance coatings. Actually there is whole line reasons why the coating diverges, and in order to avoid unnecessary work, it is better to do everything right away in accordance with the technology. But if, nevertheless, the joints have diverged, then the problem can be solved in several ways, we will also consider them in this review.

Causes of diverging joints

In fact, there are a number of factors due to which cracks form on the surface, or even the sheets leave at the junctions. Only right technology guarantees that the wall-paper joint in joint will not disperse and will not exfoliate from the basis. Consider the main causes of marriage in the workplace.

Peeling off the edge of the wallpaper at the attachment point together with putty

Very often you can find a situation where the material peels off along the joint, while the material of the base finish is also separated along with it.

This happens for the following reasons:

  • The use of low-quality finishing materials, their adhesion to the base is quite low, therefore, during the work, wallpaper glue soaks the material, and it is separated from the wall. In this case, it is quite difficult to carry out repairs, because in order to achieve good result, need .
  • Even if good materials were used, but the surface was not dust-free and primed with a reinforcing compound, the adhesive can cause the base to become soggy and deform. Even if the surface seems very durable, do not forget about the primer - its price is low, but you will insure yourself against unpleasant surprises and time-consuming repairs.
  • Another common reason is the use of poor-quality or inappropriate type of wallpaper glue.. Therefore, it is also not worth saving on this aspect, it is better to purchase a more reliable option, even if its cost is higher.

Poor edge handling

Another common option, although avoiding such problems is quite simple:

  • First, when spreading sheets, you should Special attention pay attention to the edges, they should be smeared very carefully, without gaps, but you should not apply too much composition, otherwise it will climb out of the seam.
  • Secondly, in order to press the edges, it is best to use a special one, with their help you will not only fix the seam well, but also ensure an excellent fit of the joints.

Coating color is too dark

This problem is caused by the following factors:

  • Big difference in color - very dark colors on a white base, it is not always possible to dock perfectly exactly, which is why white stripes are visible.
  • The uneven structure and large thickness also prevent the joints from being tight and invisible.

Advice!
The simplest solution to make the seams as small as possible is to paint the stripes on the wall at the joints with dark paint to match the color of the wallpaper.
When pasting, the wall at the seams will be of the same tone, and the cracks will not be visible.

Violation of work technology

This problem is very common, so that it does not arise, it is worth remembering the following factors:

  • The instructions that are written on the wallpaper label are mandatory to study, it is important to choose the type of glue that is recommended by the manufacturer, this guarantees excellent result. The desire to save money can even lead to material damage.
  • Most often, paper and textile wallpapers come off at the joints due to the fact that they were kept smeared with glue for too long and they got too wet. After drying, such coatings shrink - and as a result, cracks are obtained, which are quite difficult to eliminate.
  • Too liquid consistency, which leads to soaking of the material and its uneven drying afterwards.
  • If a wallpaper joint is made in the corner, then it is better to move it 10-15 centimeters, so you can combine the sheets much better.

Remember!
Paper wallpapers belong to the most budgetary segment, but it is they who are subject to the most significant deformations, since the base in them shrinks when dried, like the rest of the material.

Troubleshooting

But sometimes it happens that the work has already been done and the joints of the wallpaper have parted - what to do in such a situation?

Let's look at a few of the most simple options Troubleshooting:

  • If the gap is large, then the easiest way is to cut thin strips from the same ones. This is one of the most time-consuming, but also one of the most effective options troubleshooting. But again, if the clearance is small, then this way won't fit.
  • If the wallpaper is white, then you can use putty, and if colored - sealants in the color of the coating. This will hide the flaws, but upon closer examination, the seams will be visible due to the uneven structure of the materials.

  • joint different wallpapers the easiest way to arrange any decorative element: border, cord, special sticker for joints.
  • If the edges have peeled off, but the putty has not come off, then the area is smeared with PVA glue, after which it is pressed with a rag and dried with a hairdryer, so the repair takes place in a matter of minutes. If the putty has also come off, then it is necessary to finish and prime the wall section before gluing.

  • If joints are visible on non-woven wallpaper, then the easiest way is to seal them with putty and paint the surface, so you can get rid of the cracks once and for all.

Conclusion

As you can see, the problem is much easier to prevent than to fix. And if you have to correct the poor-quality result of others, then this should be done carefully so as not to damage the surface even more - in this case, only re-gluing will help. The video in this article will help you better understand some of the features of this type of work.

In preparation for the repair, each person draws a beautiful picture in his imagination: New furniture, flat ceilings, ideal floor, beautiful wallpaper. But the wallpaper will look beautiful only if it is glued perfectly, without visually noticeable joints and irregularities. This is what will be discussed next.

WHY ARE THE SEAMS ON THE WALLPAPER VISIBLE? POSSIBLE REASONS:

  • canvases diverged from each other;
  • glue gets on the front side of the canvas;
  • the edges of the sheets, when narrowed, are slightly twisted along with the putty;
  • one edge of the canvas is darker than the other;
  • sheets have not stained, cut obliquely edges.

The joints on the wallpaper have parted

When wet, all wallpaper on paper basis, whether they are just paper or textile on a paper backing, tend to change their size, swell. By the way, some types of non-woven fabric are also subject to this effect, albeit to a lesser extent. For example, if you take a paper sheet 52 cm wide and wet it, then its width will change by 2–6 mm.

Having no experience and not knowing the features of a particular material, craftsmen cannot always adequately assess the future result of gluing. In the process of work, the joints can look perfect, and only after drying, the paper can be deformed, trying to take on the original size - to reduce the width. This leads to the divergence of the joints on paper wallpaper. There are a number of rules that should be followed in order to avoid such problems:

1. Do not allow excessive soaking of the material

It is necessary to understand when the wallpaper has received a sufficient amount of moisture and start gluing them without waiting for the moisture to soak them through.

Paper is made from wood pulp, not synthetic fibers, so it can swell unevenly if it gets too wet. This will become noticeable only after gluing and complete drying, when the seam will either converge or diverge, as if the edge of the wallpaper has a wavy shape.

2. Be sure to apply enough, not too much adhesive

It is important that in the process of work exactly the amount of glue that is necessary for the quick “adhesion” of the material to the surface is used. When fixation occurs, the material can no longer be deformed. Otherwise, when using more glue, the material will first change shape, narrow and only then stick to the surface.

3. It is important to fix the edges of the wallpaper

This will require:

  • tip of a spatula
  • special roller
  • glue for joints or borders

The latter refers to extreme measures and is used in rare cases.

4. Painting the walls at the joints with dark paint

If before wallpapering dark tones workers are going to paint over a vertical dark strip, in places where there will be seams, this means that they are not confident in their abilities and allow the joints on the wallpaper to diverge. Due to the dark base, this defect in the work will not be evident. However, this is a reason to doubt the professionalism of the chosen team. Remember skillful experienced master never use this technique.

Glue on the front side of the canvas

If glue gets on the front side of the canvas, the color of the material may change, the paint or top coat may peel off. When rubbing the seam with a rag, the paint (top coat) is erased even more. Many manufacturers warn in advance that glue on the front side of the wallpaper is not allowed.

How to avoid it?

First of all, there should be no excess glue that can go beyond the edges of the canvases.

If a vinyl wallpapers“Forgive” a small amount of it that gets on the seam, and then only if you immediately remove it with a damp cloth, without rubbing too hard, then this technique will not work for paper and non-woven coatings. The risk is about 50% to 50%. You can wash the seam, but in some cases it will only get worse. Not to mention textile wallpapers that do not allow even a drop of glue to get in. If this happened, and you tried to wash it with water, divorces are inevitable.

Curling the edges together with putty

This problem can arise only in situations where the technological cycle of wall plastering has been violated, or Construction Materials Low quality. Most often, the edges are twisted at textile wallpaper on a paper basis due to the narrowing of not only the substrate, but also the fabric itself.

Different color of wallpaper edges

It happens that you can see the joints on the wallpaper, not because of the poor-quality gluing, but because one edge of the roll is darker than the other. When joining two canvases, a sharp color transition is visible. At the same time, the eye cannot catch the difference in colors when looking at one canvas. This effect is due to the peculiarities of the technological cycle of wallpaper production and is not considered a marriage. When gluing the entire volume, tone transitions are not noticeable.

HOW TO FIX?

If the wallpaper is plain without a pattern, the manufacturer often recommends the so-called “reverse” gluing, i.e. each cut canvas will dock with the next different edges. Simply put, one canvas is glued, the next is flipped 180 degrees and the opposite edge is joined to the first, and so on. On the packages of such parties there is a special sign “↓”. In this situation, such an effect is associated with the peculiarities of the technological cycle of wallpaper production and is not considered a marriage. When gluing the entire volume, tone transitions are not noticeable.

If there is no such icon, in order to avoid difficulties in the future, when buying, try to combine two rolls with different ends and check if there is a clear transition in tone. Unfortunately, it is difficult to catch the difference in shades before gluing. It becomes visible if you glue a couple of paintings, let them dry and look from the side.

In any case, according to the instructions at the beginning of work, the master should not open more than one roll, and when a marriage is detected, when different shades, but there is no “↓” sign, he must immediately stop work and make a claim to the seller. You can read more about this in the article "Paper wallpaper gluing".

Unpainted bevelled edges

In this case, we can recommend, before gluing, pick up desired colors pencils or felt-tip pens and finish the edges by hand. This tip can help intermediate craftsmen in this species repair. Qualified specialists will be able to close the edges so that this will not be visible.

Do not forget that each material has its own specifics. On some surfaces, the joints are completely invisible, while on others, for example, on expensive silk fabrics, the joints clearly stand out, which is considered not just the norm, but an exceptional handwriting of the naturalness and exclusivity of the material. It is very difficult for an uninitiated person to understand the intricacies. If you have doubts about the quality of the wallpaper material or the gluing work itself, our specialists will be happy to assist you, advise, and, if necessary, issue an expert opinion.
