The hours go by the days.
The clock runs over the century ...
- Where are you in a hurry, Clock? -
A man once asked.
The clock was terribly surprised.
Thinking.
We stopped.

The history of the invention and development of watches.

The first primitive concepts for measuring time (day, morning, day, noon, evening, night) to ancient people were subconsciously prompted by the regular change of the season, the change of day and night, the movement of the sun and moon across the firmament.
The history of the clock is very interesting and informative. It was important for a person to know the exact time in order to optimally plan their actions, so the sundial, water and mechanical clocks were progressively invented. The result at the moment is those complex mechanisms that can be seen in modern stores.
The origin of the name of the word "watch".
The word "clock" appeared in everyday life in the XIV century, its basis was the Latin "clocca", meaning a bell. And before that, the first experiments in determining the time were associated with the observation of the movement of the sun across the sky. In 3500 BC, the first sundial was used. The principle of their work was to observe the shadow formed when sunlight because the position and length of the shadow change at different times.
In Greece, they came to the conclusion about the need to divide the year into twelve months of thirty days each. Subsequently, the inhabitants of ancient Babylon and Egypt divided the day into hours, minutes, seconds, which played an important role in the development of watchmaking.
Jost Burgey made the first watch with a minute hand in 1577. This product also had a minute hand, the oscillations of the pendulum turned a cogwheel, which, in turn, changed the position of the hands on the dial. The dial was graduated at 12 o'clock, so the hand moved in a circle twice a day.
Currently, mankind possesses sophisticated, reliable and high-precision watch movements, created using the latest scientific research and designed in a wide variety of styles.
Unusual clocks, ideally suited to the interior of the room, are always a successful decor element. Not only in terms of aesthetics, but also in terms of functionality. These are the original watches that you can make with your own hands.
A watch is a necessary, useful and, in general, common thing. Few people think about their design, because the main thing is that they show the time correctly.
But try to do Wall Clock do it yourself - and you will notice that the atmosphere in this room has subtly changed.
Of course, it's not about assembling and adjusting the watch mechanism yourself - you should use it ready-made, bought in a store or taken from an old watch. But you can even dream up the design of the dial.

Step-by-step workflow:

1. Two sheets of A4 cardboard are glued onto an A3 sheet.

2. A circle is made on a cardboard with a compass and then cut out.

3. Wrap the discs with tape.

4. We wind the paper cord on the wire.

5. Then we wrap the wire around a round stick to make a curl.

6. Find the middle of the circle using the ruler.

7. We glue the discs and start decorating the clock.

8. Cut out hearts from disks and wrap with ribbon.

9. Decorate the heart with red sisal balls and glue them on the clock.

10. In the middle of the discs we glue sisal and rhinestones. We set the hands with the clockwork on the central disc.

Why watch?

To begin with, DIY watch crafts do not have to be workers. They can play a purely decorative role. But even in this hypostasis, they will not cease to be a mystical subject, carrying the mysterious energy of invisible all-pervading Time. It can fly or drag, make a person happy or sad, and constantly requires tracking its progress. Isn't this the best reason to make a watch with your own hands not just a chronometer, monotonously counting down the minutes, but a real highlight of the interior?

Decorative clocks will become a highlight of any interior

What to collect from?

"You can use a lot of different things and materials for making watches with your own hands."

Look at the photo of a watch assembled by craftsmen with their own hands, and you will understand - you can really make an accessory from everything that comes to hand! Creative thought, especially when it is already directed, will generate incredibly rewarding projects.

Someone will see the dial of the future masterpiece in the lid of a wooden cable reel, someone in an old plate, and someone will even think to take a wall surface under it.

Original watch from an old record

You will be able to assemble a magnificent wall clock with your own hands from the halves of the globe. Although it will take a lot of space to implement such a project, it will look amazing in the interior. Such chronometric compositions are very relevant for design trends with a geographic bias. You can make geographic clocks in decoupage style or use parts of ready-made globes. This accessory carries with it the spirit of wandering, so it can be safely added to the decor of tourist offices or used when decorating travelers' homes.

To decorate the hall and hall, try to create a picture clock with your own hands. The dial subject can be either a portrait or an originally printed fabric, enclosed in a frame.

Picture clock in the interior of the living room

Of interest among the photos of watches assembled by hand is the kitchen model of the chronometer, which is based on tin... Here such an abstract part of the watch as the spring of the mechanism is on display.

It is fashionable to make a watch with your own hands from a tin can

A clock made of cardboard, decorated under a chessboard, is very suitable for an office and a library.

In principle, you can use a lot of different things and materials to craft watches with your own hands. You can use:

  • paper;
  • gramophone records;
  • computer disks;
  • cuts of a tree;
  • plates;
  • glass, etc.

Plate clock is ideal for kitchen decor

Whatever you decide on, the result will be noteworthy anyway.

Simple master classes of watches with your own hands

Model "Needlewoman"

To create this watch, you will need decorative buttons and ordinary hoops used in embroidery. The dial will be a fabric, the color and print of which is suitable for room design... In addition, prepare:

  • tape;
  • a piece of cardboard;
  • internal mechanism from old walkers.

Now we are looking at how to make such a watch with our own hands.

The process is intuitively simple. Pull the fabric onto the hoop, cut off the excess and sew the buttons to the resulting base so that they imitate the location of the dials on the dial.

Sew the buttons onto the fabric

Now we need to prepare the substrate. We will cut it out of cardboard for our watches. The part must have the diameter of the hoop and be inserted with inside... Its strength is enough to hold the hands and the mechanism itself. For reliability, the insert can be glued to the fabric. It remains to attach an eyelet and hang the accessory on the wall.

Attach the clockwork

Using this technology, they often collect thematic clocks, for example, New Year's. To emphasize their connection to the event, it is enough to add an adequate decor in the form of: serpentine, golden cones, improvised snowdrifts. It will be easy to change the topic if you want. The ability to change the design of the accessory will allow you to play with the perception of the environment of the entire surrounding space, which will really appeal to lovers of frequent changes of scenery.

Paper clock

Wonderful colorful wall clock with your own hands can be assembled from magazine and newspaper sheets. Cooking:

  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • silk thread;
  • transparent adhesive tape;
  • a needle;
  • cardboard;
  • 24 journal sheets of the same format;
  • a pair of transparent plastic discs.

The latter can be found in the packaging of CDs.

There are different master classes for making paper clocks with your own hands, but in our case we will twist paper blanks. To do this, wrap the magazine sheet on a pencil and get a tube. To keep the workpiece in shape, fix the free edge with adhesive tape.

Roll up paper blanks

When all 24 parts are ready, each of them will need to be bent, thus separating 1/3 of the length.

We will sew the tubes along this fold, collecting them into a ring.

Collect the straws in a ring

We carefully lay out the sewn paper watch blanks on the table and put a transparent disk on top. This must be done so that the central holes of the elements coincide.

Insert and assemble the clockwork

We insert and assemble the clockwork. On the back side, we will hide it under a second plastic disk and a similarly shaped cardboard base. Now we fasten the arrows - and you're done!

Ready-made watches from magazines

Cardboard clock

They can be made unpretentious, in a flat projection, or you can sweat a little and collect real imitation walkers. Such a do-it-yourself watch craft is quickly assembled from boxes. You will need a rectangular packing box for the case, perhaps even for shoes. Everything here will depend on what size you plan to make the product.

Example of a watch from a cardboard box

The first thing we will do is attach two ribbons to the bottom of the box. Then we will hang cones on them. The assembly of the watch from cardboard will continue to work on the dial. We cut it out using a stencil and attach it to the front side of the craft.

Now let's get to the roof. We assemble its structure from two thin boxes and two triangular pieces of cardboard.

Decorating ideas will be prompted by photos of hand-made watches, which can be found in unlimited quantities on the Internet.

Bicycle wheel

A clock made of cardboard, a clock made of paper ... How about the idea of a clock from a bicycle wheel? Since the base is rather large, it will be necessary to find a clock mechanism of the appropriate size, capable of rotating large hands. Working on wall clock with our own hands, we will take ordinary school rulers. Let's give them the required length. At the ends we attach triangles symbolizing an arrow. Moving elements must be clearly visible against the background of the disc, therefore, if the design of the product allows, the arrows can be painted in a suitable color.

Attach the tin cover

There is one trick in creating such a watch with your own hands. To balance the movement of the arrows, you will need to attach a counterweight to the larger one. Washers usually play its role. This makes it easier to find an adequate mass.

A new wall clock can transform the interior of your room, and for this it is not at all necessary to go around many shops in search of suitable options... I offer you several lessons from which you can get ideas on how to decorate an old boring clock or make an original new one from a variety of readily available materials. Moreover, they will become great gift, especially for those of your friends or relatives who are not particularly punctual.

Master class number 1

A very original watch can be made from an embroidery hoop and a set of decorative buttons. You can choose a fabric base that matches your interior in color and texture, as well as use the idle collection of buttons of all colors and sizes.

You will need:

  • old watch or clockwork with hands;
  • hoop;
  • the cloth;
  • buttons;
  • ribbon or braid;
  • (optional) cardboard or thin board.

Take a clockwork or an old wall clock that you don't mind taking apart and remaking. Remove the arrows and the nuts holding them together, while remembering the sequence in which they are attached.

2: Hoop the fabric between the hoop, cut off the excess edges and sew on the buttons, positioning them in the same way as the numbers on the dial.

Now you need to fix the clockwork. Make a small hole in the middle of your dial and back side attach the movement so that the hands are in the center of the dial. To fix the mechanism, you can cut out a circle of cardboard or wood, the diameter of which matches the hoop, and glue the mechanism to it. Or you can simply hang it on a decorative tape, fix it on the hoop and make a small loop so that the clock can be hung on the wall. Screw on the hands of the clock. Ready!

Step by step lesson number 2

From old newspapers or magazines, you can make such an unusual wall clock.

For work you will need:

Take a pen or pencil and wrap a page from a newspaper or magazine around it. Make 24 such "tubes". Secure the ends of the tubes with clear adhesive tape to prevent unwinding. Step back about a third from the end of the tube and bend it in half at this point.

Take a long needle, thread a silk thread (or floss thread) into it and thread the needle through the bent end of the tube. Draw out the needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread, then sew the remaining 23 tubes, placing them in a circle.

Take a transparent disc and place it over the sewn tubes so that the hole in the middle is in the center of your circle of tubes. Then attach the clockwork, making sure that the place where the hands are attached is aligned with the hole in the disc.

Turn the watch over and attach a second disc. Put cardboard on top, fasten the clockwork with a nut.

Screw on the hands of the clock and you're done!

Another DIY wall clock

Such a watch with unusual hands-feet of John Cleese from the Ministry of Silly Walking can be an excellent gift, which, due to the fact that the watch is kept in a neutral black and white style, will fit into almost any interior.

You will need:

  • canvas measuring 20 x 20 cm;
  • clockwork with hands;
  • decoupage glue, brush;
  • PVA glue;
  • plastic (it is better to use poorly bendable plastic, for example, old plastic folders are perfect);
  • printed and cut out numbers for the dial, as well as an image of John Cleese;
  • awl;
  • scissors and scalpel;
  • nippers;
  • black felt-tip pen.

Print the dial with the image of John Cleese (you can download the archive) on an A4 sheet, cut the sheet to a size of approximately 21 x 21 cm.

Lightly dampen the image with water and let it absorb. Meanwhile, brush the canvas with glue. Gently glue the wet image onto the canvas and smooth it out. Then apply another layer of clear glue, press down on the edges of the paper and let the canvas dry. After everything is dry, you can apply another layer of glue.

Cut out the legs according to the template, while leaving a margin of about 0.5 cm along the contour. Lightly dampen the image with water and set it aside to absorb the moisture.

Take a large enough piece of plastic and apply glue to it, then carefully glue the legs cut from the paper, smooth the image. Cover the picture with glue again and leave to dry overnight.

If you find that the plastic is slightly bent after drying, just take a sheet of thick paper and glue it on the back.

After the part is completely dry, take a scalpel and carefully cut the foot out along the outline.

First, mark the middle of the canvas. Then use an awl to make a hole in the center of the canvas. It must be large enough to allow the movement of the hand holder to be inserted through it. Insert the mechanism from the back side and secure it with a nut.

If your mechanism also includes a metal ring before attaching it between the canvas and the nut, then so that it is not visible, you can print the image of John Cleese again, cut out a circle of a suitable diameter with a hole in the middle and glue it in such a way that it covers metal ring.

Take the hands of the clock and place them over the legs cut out of the plastic. Use a pencil to mark the places where you will need to make holes for attaching the arrows. If necessary, trim the arrows so they are slightly shorter than plastic figurines legs, then glue the details on the arrows. After the glue is dry, attach the feet to your watch. If necessary, the fastening nut can be painted with a black marker.

Ideas for inspiration

And finally, we offer you some more examples of how you can decorate, remake or make your own wall clock - take inspiration and create!
