Step-by-step making of a spoiler with your own hands. Making a spoiler with your own hands - step-by-step instructions Putting the surface of the spoiler in order

", many motorists, having installed something more like a football goal on their "basin", classify their "masterpieces" as pumped-up cars.

But if you don’t like this scenario and you decide to approach this issue thoroughly, I recommend that you this article as a guide with which you can create the right wing with your own hands, spending a minimum of money and your free time.

The purpose of the wing is to press down on the rear drive part, thereby increasing traction and improving.

My article today is about how to make a rear spoiler with your own hands , without resorting to the help of specialists, using available tools and the necessary material for this.

The creation of the spoiler took place directly on the model; a rigid frame of the spoiler was designed, after which the part was sculpted and glued using a rough matrix (template). It takes about ten days to do everything, provided that your hands are straight and there is plenty of time. The design was spotted on one of the models, to be honest I don’t even know which one I saw something similar on, but as often happens, the hands simply reproduce some scraps or fragments from memory, and as a result something of their own comes out.. .

So, let's go...

DIY spoiler: template

First of all, I estimated the approximate width of the wing , after which I cut off the required piece of hardboard. The convexity of the roof was reproduced using a patterned chipboard guide.

Then I cut out a strip in the shape of an arc and screwed it to the bottom part to a strip of hardboard, after which, due to the load, the hardboard itself formed the outer surface of the future spoiler.

Plasticine helped to fix the wing in space. Using tape, I sealed all the places where the plasticine slides will be placed. Using thick layers, I formed the spoiler support struts, then installed a wing strip made of chipboard on them. By the way, plasticine perfectly allows you to adjust the angle of inclination of the spoiler plane, as well as its symmetry.

The next stage is cutting out brackets from hardboard, which are installed on the sides of the wing close to the car body pillars. It remains to fix them using plasticine with inside. The final stage of creating a template matrix was gluing the hardboard with fiberglass scraps; it took several hours for the resin to polymerize (dry), after which my frame was ready.

Removal of the frame was successful - there were no deformations or distortions, the spoiler model was removed easily. Thus, I have the upper part of the future template, according to which it will be possible to sculpt the matrix and wing.

The spoiler matrix that I created is divided into two parts. The whole beauty of making a spoiler “quickly” is that the first step is to create the upper part of the model, remove the matrix from it and only then add the bottom.

To form the spoiler matrix you need to: use thin and thick glass mat. A layer of fiberglass mat is placed on top of the wool fiberglass mat to secure and strengthen the matrix.

The second stage of making a spoiler with your own hands is adjusting the spoiler layout.

After the resin has hardened, the inverted wing can be turned over and checked what happened inside. Next, I built symmetry and formed the side posts (supports).

Then I corrected the corners of the model - I patched them up and cleaned them together with the matrix flange.

I sealed the lower part of the spoiler with fiberglass and made holes for the bolts; they should be located as close as possible to the spoiler model, this will allow the matrix halves to fit better and more tightly.

I trimmed the “hairy” edges of the matrix using a grinder, since the thickness of the plastic consisting of 2 halves is approximately 6-7 mm thick. Once trimming is finished, you need to clean up the edges a little, this will save you from unpleasant glass splinters.

Opening the resulting spoiler matrix turned out to be extremely inconvenient; I had to first use a knife blade. He held it between the half-forms with slight opening movements. After that, I inserted wedges and all sorts of wood chips into the thin gap that had formed. After some time, after not entirely pleasant manipulations, the half-forms of the matrix are still revealed.

To clean the matrix from the remaining plasticine, I used plastic scrapers, after which I thoroughly blew everything with a hot industrial hairdryer and removed the residue with a sponge.

The part is formed with the obligatory use of gelcoat; it is not recommended to use an external protective layer on the spoiler at all. The fact is that after painting there is a possibility that the texture of the fiberglass will begin to appear. Also be sure to apply the release coat of matrix and gelcoat using a wide brush.

I would like to note that aluminum powder gelcoat is not without its drawbacks, the main one of which is the polyester resin base for molding. Paraffin, which is part of this resin, can rise to the surface of the gel during polymerization... When everything hardens, the gelcoat has to be lightly sanded.

While the gelcoat is drying, there is time to cut the glass mat and dilute a thick “gruel” consisting of aerosil and “polyester”; this substance will be needed to fill the sharp corners of the matrix.

You can understand what contact molding is by looking at the example of my spoiler. The gelcoat is coated with polyester resin, then covered with glass mat. I make the first layer from the three hundredth layer. Then resin is applied to the surface of the glass mat, after which it is nailed to the gelcoat using a brush. To get rid of air bubbles, which are extremely undesirable, use a special roller with a transverse notch or make your own.

I recommend trimming the edges of the freshly formed part using a sharp knife until the polyester resin has changed from a jelly-like state to a solid one. This is important because this seemingly insignificant detail can save a lot of time. The resulting spoiler halves must be removed from the matrix and the edges slightly modified with sandpaper.

Climax...

DIY spoiler- ready! In addition, in the process I managed to create a matrix according to which I will be able to make more than one of these in the future if necessary. The process of gluing the two halves occurs as follows: on the edges of the spoiler halves, which are installed in the matrix halves, strips of slurry consisting of aerosil and polyester resin are laid out in a small heap. When you put the two halves together, these strips of porridge come into contact, firmly gluing the two parts into one.

Now you can get the finished wing and proceed to the final stage: sanding the hardened mess and preparing the spoiler surface for painting.

Well, something like this... From now on you know how to make a spoiler with your own hands, moreover, now you can create matrices and templates yourself with subsequent casting of the wing of any shape. By the way, having once figured out how to make a matrix with your own hands, in the future you can use this experience not only for spoilers, but also for the manufacture of body parts, such as aerodynamic body kits, skirts, air intakes and much more.

To improve the appearance of the car, the market offers various tuning elements, including a spoiler. A spoiler will make the car more attractive and give it positive driving characteristics. You can make such an accessory with your own hands, giving it the desired shape. For independent work, expensive materials and special tools are not required.

What is a car spoiler

A spoiler is one or more special elements designed to change the aerodynamics of a car body by redirecting air flows. The main purposes of installing this part are:

  • reduction of aerodynamic drag;
  • increased downforce;
  • combating vehicle body pollution.

It is worth mentioning that many install a spoiler as a decorative (tuning) element. Its mounting can be done in front, behind, on the roof or on the side of the car. With an individual approach, you can make a custom-made spoiler, which will allow even a production car to stand out in traffic.

An original spoiler from a tuning studio will make your car stand out on city streets.

Pros and cons of installation

The spoiler gives the car the following qualities:

  • attractive appearance;
  • improved dynamics;
  • increased adhesion to the canvas;
  • reducing fuel consumption;
  • increasing braking efficiency.

It should be clarified that the positive qualities of the element in question appear at speeds above 100 km/h.

The disadvantages include:

  • high cost of structural elements;
  • increased fuel consumption due to incorrectly selected form or installation;
  • fragile material of manufacture (plastic).

Car tuning options

Today you can choose a spoiler for almost any car, regardless of body type: from a sedan to a minibus. To make the choice easier, you need to understand in more detail the criteria by which this tuning element is classified:

  • at the installation site;
  • by installation method;
  • by material;
  • according to form.

The main location for installing the spoiler is the rear of the roof or the trunk lid. This depends on the body type, as well as the size of the spoiler and its shape. You can attach a tuning element:

  • by using double sided tape. The option is appropriate when small sizes spoiler;
  • bolted fastening. Many motorists do not like this method because of the need to make holes in the body part;
  • fastening with staples. This option is suitable for those cars that have a certain shape of the rear cover and a gap between the body.

What material is suitable for tuning

As for the material for making the spoiler, the most common are:

  • ARB plastic;
  • ordinary plastic;
  • fiberglass;
  • polyurethane;
  • aluminum.

To give preference to a design made from one material or another, it is first necessary to consider each of them in more detail, taking into account its chemical and technical characteristics.

Which form to choose

Spoilers can be quite varied in shape. To conclude whether it is suitable this option or not, you need to see the detail in front of you. There are cases when the shape of an element complements a part of the body, but generally spoilers are represented by the most non-standard designs. With their help, you can give your car not only exclusivity, but also aggressiveness.

Spoilers can also be classified by design:

Rules for selecting a suitable spoiler

Today, many spoilers are produced for a specific car make and model, but there are also universal options that are suitable for almost any car. The only difference is where they will be attached. The car itself should also be taken into account: if we are talking about the executive class, then the spoiler will obviously be an unnecessary element in the design.

It is important to evaluate how the chosen accessory will look. To do this, just take the part, apply it to the car and see from the outside how well it matches its appearance. Many tuning studios have a special program with which you can select best option, after which they determine the installation location of the element. If the spoiler is designed for a specific car, then this question does not arise.

It is better to purchase a spoiler without a paint layer, which will allow you to find a color that matches the car. An important point is the selection of a suitable fastening method.

In order not to make a mistake with your choice, it is better to contact only reputable tuning companies. Only in such studios can truly high-quality products be installed.

When choosing a spoiler, attention should be paid to the material: in many cases the part is made of plastic, which is characterized by low cost, and short service life. The plastic spoiler quickly fades when exposed to sunlight and breaks with minor impacts.

In addition, there is such a material as fiberglass. A part made from it quickly loses its original appearance and fails.

Carbon fiber products are of higher quality and, therefore, more expensive. It is important to understand that a high-quality spoiler must be made for a specific make and model of the car, taking into account the improvement of its aerodynamic characteristics. Therefore about universal options we can only say that their level of quality is questionable.

How to make a spoiler for a car with your own hands

When and why do you have to ask yourself the question of making a spoiler yourself? Today it is offered big choice element in question and, it would seem, doing something with your own hands in this regard is not required. But then the cost of a high-quality spoiler turns out to be quite high, and this figure is not a guarantee that desired effect will be achieved.

Therefore, some car owners design spoilers themselves, obtaining the desired design and the desired effect from installing such an element. Homemade accessory can be made using various materials, which the owner chooses based on his imagination and free time.

Tools and materials

To start making a spoiler, you will need to prepare the following list of materials and tools:

  • foam sheet;
  • fiberglass about two meters;
  • fastening and welding;
  • spray paint (2 pcs.);
  • primer (3 cans);
  • epoxy glue 2 kg;
  • tassels;
  • spatulas;
  • mesh for reinforcement;
  • sandpaper.

Depending on the specific design of the product, the main material is:

Stages of making a homemade spoiler

The entire process of creating a structure can be divided into several stages:

  • mold making;
  • material reinforcement;
  • putty;
  • painting;
  • installation.

It is best to use cardboard as a pattern. You can also use plywood, but this will lead to additional costs.

Regardless of the material chosen, after realizing the desired shape, be sure to try on the pattern on the machine. You need to make sure that the size is correct and the attachment points correspond to the intended locations. You should make sure that the future product is symmetrical, for which the pattern is bent in half.

The frame can be made from different materials, but its main role is to maintain a given shape at the beginning of manufacturing the part. The spoiler will be given rigidity by fiberglass, as well as a layer of putty and paint. When choosing a filler, you need to take into account the planned shape of the future product.

Making a spoiler from foam plastic and fiberglass

One of the important stages in creating a spoiler is proper design. This element cannot be done “by eye”. The ideal option at the design stage would be to involve an engineer or an experienced person who is involved in this type of tuning.

After determining the dimensions and design, you can begin to create a metal frame.

  1. Quite often, when making a rear spoiler, a sheet of galvanized iron 1.5 mm thick is used, the edges of which are bent upward. M6 nuts should also be welded to the base for subsequent installation of the product.
  2. The resulting frame is glued on all sides with foam blanks to increase the volume; polyurethane foam is also often used. The thickness of the foam is chosen at the discretion of the owner. You can cut it with a regular stationery knife or a metal blade. As a result, we obtain a matrix.
  3. When the spoiler blank is ready, fiberglass (glass carbonate, fiberglass) is used to impart rigidity. A minimum of three layers of material should be applied with short time intervals for the resin to polymerize. Each subsequent layer should be denser than the previous one. We must strive to ensure that there is no air bubbles. The last layer of fiberglass must be coated with polyester resin. If desired, a brake light can be installed in the spoiler; then the wires should be laid at the stage of gluing with fiberglass.
  4. To obtain good adhesion, the surface of the product should be primed, after which putty is applied.
  5. The subsequent steps are aimed at cleaning the surface with sandpaper, this will give the spoiler as smooth a look as possible.
  6. At the final stage, the part is primed and covered with several layers of paint, and then varnish.

Step-by-step production of a plaster spoiler

Using a material such as plaster, you can make not only a matrix, but also a copy of your favorite spoiler.

  1. To pour the gypsum, we make a polystyrene foam box. Then we place the part matrix or the finished spoiler into it, after wrapping it in cling film to avoid damage.
  2. Fill the box with plaster. After the material has hardened, we cut it into two parts. After removing the original, we will receive an exact copy of the form.
  3. To make a blank, line the mold with film and fill it with plaster.
  4. After it hardens, open the halves of the matrix and remove the workpiece.
  5. Subsequent steps are aimed at finishing, reinforcing and painting the spoiler.

To give the matrix strength, you should follow the same recommendations that are given for making a spoiler from foam plastic.

How to make a foam spoiler at home

The procedure is simple, but requires care to avoid damage to the bodywork.

  1. Cover with polyethylene top part trunk lid, you can also use masking tape.
  2. Cover the prepared surface with polyurethane foam.
  3. We wait for the foam to harden, then sharp knife we form the future part.
  4. In order to bring the product to the required shape, you should use sandpaper.
  5. We also add rigidity to the product through the use of fiberglass.
  6. The final stages are similar to the previous methods of making an accessory.

The matrix can also be made from plasticine. The process is similar to the described sequence of actions for making a foam spoiler. Regardless of the chosen method, care must be taken to ensure sufficient rigidity of the structure. In addition, fastening such a tuning element should prevent its loss, ensuring reliable fixation.

Video: installing a “duck tail” on a VAZ 2109

Anyone can make a spoiler for their “iron horse” if they wish. To do this, it is enough to select necessary materials and tools. It doesn’t matter which car is being tuned - Niva Universal or Mercedes Benz ML. If you scrupulously follow the step-by-step instructions, you can make the car much more attractive, and also significantly improve its technical characteristics.

Many motorists believe that the highlight of a car is the spoiler.

Thanks to him, the car looks stylish and original, since it correlates with the exterior of the car, defining it appearance, and related to design. This is its aesthetic function. A synonym for a spoiler is a rear wing. It looks like a football goal.

In general, this additional element for a car that performs a number of positive functions. Firstly, it improves the dynamic properties of the car, radically changing its appearance.

It is also necessary to increase the stability of the machine and achieve optimal control, while simultaneously being a certain load for the front and rear of the body. Secondly, the spoiler changes the characteristics and movement of the air flow.

These are its main features that make it so popular. The presence of a spoiler on a car indicates that the car corners more confidently, eliminating the possibility of damage during a skid, increasing braking efficiency. It also prevents water and various types of dirt from getting on the car windows.

It is quite capable of completing the tasks assigned to it when the car speed reaches 80-90 km/h. The spoiler is mounted either on the rear door or on the trunk. True, there are other options.

1. Types of spoilers

There are spoilers different types. They are created with their own hands, however, in most cases they are manufactured in a factory. Then this is mass production, which concerns a specific car model. The spoiler is installed on the car by the manufacturer.

It is customary to distinguish the following types of spoiler:side ones, those that are installed on the bumper, there are roof spoilers and a rear spoiler. Side spoilers are door sill covers for cars. People usually call them thresholds-overlays. Spoilers that are designed to be installed on the bumper are popularly called bumper skirts. They are usually installed at the bottom.

Those spoilers that are installed on the roof of a car are usually found on crossovers and hatchbacks. They are mounted at the top of the back door. The rear spoiler is installed on sedans, on the trunk lid.

There is a type of spoiler that is installed on hatchbacks where the rear of the car has a gentle angle. For example this VAZ-2108. Here it is possible to install a rear spoiler below the rear window. They all differ in design and material used to make the spoiler.

2. How to choose a spoiler?

When choosing a spoiler, it is necessary to take into account its functional purpose. The point is that it right choice can affect the aerodynamics of the car body, while at the same time being a decoration.

Branded spoilers have better characteristics, so you need to buy good model for the appropriate price. Spoiler installation should be done by professionals.

3. How to make a spoiler yourself?

It turns out that you can create a spoiler yourself. This requires durable material and other available means.

- polystyrene foam, the size of which is 100x100 cm and the thickness is 5 cm;

Paint that matches the color of the car - several cans are needed;

Sheet of iron, the thickness of which is not more than 1.5 mm;

Primer and putty - three jars;

Epoxy glue within two kilograms;

Brushes for applying glue;

Ruler;

Sandpaper;

Carbon fiber or fiberglass;

Neon lighting;

LEDs;

The principle of creating spoilers is the same. Its specificity of operation and functional purpose correlates with the right choice.

Brief step-by-step instruction

1) First you need to use polystyrene foam to cut out the “blade” of the wing. It is better to do this diagonally, since in this way it is necessary to keep within the dimensions.

2) The next stage is making the mount. Plates are cut from a sheet of iron. Next you need to drill three millimeter holes. The distance between them should be no more than 30 mm. At this stage of work, we bend the plate in the form of the Latin letter L, since this is how it is convenient to fasten.

Nuts with a diameter of 6 mm are welded into the base. Then they are carefully glued to foam blanks and covered with carbon fiber (fiberglass). At least three layers of fiberglass must be applied. During pasting it is necessary to maintain an interval. This is necessary for the glue to polymerize.

To speed up the process, warm up the glue a little. There is no need to prepare a lot of glue at once, since there will not be much consumption, and it will harden quickly. It washes well under running water hot water. They have the property of sticking foam crumbs. To remove static voltage, you need to touch grounded objects.

3) If you decide to make side lights or a brake light, you need to put the wires in the glued spoiler, installing LEDs and neon lighting.

4) At this stage of work we prime the surface. Next we apply putty, clean it with sandpaper and prepare it for painting.

5) Painting the resulting workpiece.

6) The final stage is varnishing the spoiler. At the time of installation of each new part you need to use a degreaser.

7) The spoiler surface needs to be tidied up.

8) We install the spoiler in the previously prepared place.

Basic materials

The spoiler is usually made of metal. Aluminum works well. Racks are usually made from it. Sometimes steel and carbon are used. Nowadays metal spoilers are quite rare.

The most common material for its production is fiberglass. It is based on synthetic resin. It is cheap and very easy to process. His positive quality– good strength.

There are spoilers made of ABS plastic. This cheap material. It is used as a result of mass production of spoilers. This plastic contains various impurities, so it is lightweight. However, a plastic spoiler is not durable, as it becomes quite fragile over time.

Appeared not long ago silicone spoilers and organosilicon polymers. They are popular because they are easy to handle, good timing service and excellent ductility.

Spoilers made of carbon are considered to be very expensive. The weight of this material is light, the strength indicators are excellent. The manufacturing process is labor-intensive. To create a convexity of the roof, a patterned guide made of chipboard is used.

Coloring

You don't need any special skills to paint a spoiler. You can do this yourself and even in a garage. Initially, the spoiler is prepared for painting by wiping it with a solvent. This way the transport soil is removed. Next, sandpaper is used.

Thanks to it, the entire surface becomes matte. Special attention it is necessary to pay attention to kinks and corners. Then we apply primer and paint, checking the cleanliness of the surface before doing so. The paint is usually matched to the color of the car. It is applied in thin layers. There should be several of them. High quality coating requires five to six stages of painting, since after the first pass there will not be an even layer.

When the paint is completely dry, the spoiler is varnished using a special aerosol can containing varnish. Check the can on a test surface, shaking it for three minutes before doing so. The varnish is also applied in an amount of approximately five layers, between which each subsequent layer is dried.

Wanting to stand out from the gray traffic stream, every car owner comes up with ways to give his car a memorable appearance. Not everyone can afford to apply a design with an airbrush or completely tune a car. But making a body spoiler with your own hands is a task accessible to the owner of any car model. Such tuning not only improves the exterior, but also gives the car improved aerodynamic characteristics.

What is a car spoiler

In a car, a spoiler is a separate element that redirects air flow to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the body. In addition, the spoiler helps fight dust on the body and increases the downforce of the car while driving. In other words, a spoiler can give some types of cars additional sportiness.

What are spoilers for?

If we talk about the functions of modern spoilers, we can distinguish three main purposes of this element:

  • giving the car additional acceleration - depending on the type of spoiler, the car can actually receive increased downforce and increased aerodynamic characteristics;
  • Dirt-repellent - spoilers prevent dust and dirt from being sucked in from the road from under the bottom of the car;
  • decorative - it must be emphasized that most car owners install a spoiler solely for the sake of giving the car a sporty look.

Depending on the quality of the product and the skill in its installation, you can achieve amazing results: the car will receive increased traction. road surface, air flows during driving will be redirected taking into account the direction of movement of the car, due to which it can noticeably accelerate.

However, there are also disadvantages to using spoilers. If the installation of a factory element has clear regulations and is carried out exclusively by professionals, then the car owner does not have to worry about the quality of the installation and the functionality of the spoiler.

However, in cases where an inexperienced technician (or car owner) tries to install a spoiler on a car on his own, it is unlikely that the desired effect will be achieved. If the spoiler is installed incorrectly, it will not be possible to use oncoming air flows; most likely, the car will experience additional difficulties when moving.

The spoiler can give the body a special finished stylish look

Types of tuning elements

It would seem that a spoiler is a highly specific element for a car. However, there are several types of spoilers, each of which stands out depending on the style, location on the car body or material.

Variations in style

There are only two types of spoiler styles in the world:

  • factory - these are products that are produced by the largest manufacturers of elements for car tuning, as well as homemade spoilers that are externally identical to factory products. As a rule, such elements have a classic appearance and are suitable for installation on most car models;
  • individual - this type of spoilers includes both factory spoilers produced in limited quantities and homemade products. However, there is a significant difference in shape, color and proven aerodynamic properties. Not always individual style guarantees giving the car additional acceleration.

Differences in location on the car body

There are four types of spoilers based on their location, with the most common being the rear spoiler. It is mounted on the trunk lid.

The rear spoiler is especially popular among Russian drivers

Roof spoiler - an option for advanced jeepers

Third place in the field of giving the car special aerodynamic properties is shared by two types of spoilers, which are mounted on bumper skirts or on side skirts.

The spoiler on the front bumper skirt gives the car a sporty look

Varieties by type of material used: photo

Modern spoilers can be made from a variety of materials. Main criterion- this is the strength and lightness of the product, as well as its wear resistance. Therefore, spoilers are made mainly from these raw materials:

    fiberglass (or, as it is also called, fiberglass). In terms of its composition, this substance belongs to plastic materials that are produced with the addition of synthetic resin additives and glass fibers. Today, fiberglass spoilers are considered the most budget-friendly in the car tuning industry. However, the low price does not in any way affect the quality of the product: the fiberglass spoiler has the same strength and durability characteristics as its more expensive counterparts;

    A fiberglass spoiler has a low cost and a sufficient service life

    ABS type plastic. This type of plastic itself is quite fragile, so when making spoilers, various strengthening additives and impurities are added to it. Due to their low cost, spoilers made of ABS plastic sell well, but their wear resistance leaves much to be desired;

    Spoiler from ABS plastic relatively cheap, but fragile

    silicone materials. The production of car spoilers from silicone began relatively recently. The great advantage of such products is their elasticity and increased durability, since air flows, even during long-term use, cannot deform such a spoiler;

    The spoiler made of silicone materials is elastic, durable and attractive in appearance.

    carbon (or carbon fiber material) is one of the most modern species raw materials from which the spoiler can be made. The product will give the car excellent characteristics aerodynamics, but the cost of carbon spoilers is quite high;

    A carbon fiber spoiler is quite expensive, but the envious glances of other car owners more than compensate for this small drawback

    light metals - aluminum and steel. Making an entire spoiler from metal is unprofitable and pointless, so light metals are used only for casting individual elements - blades, struts and flaps.

    Metal spoiler - an option for good cars and real men

How the spoiler works

Depending on the type of product, the principle of its operation will vary. Thus, located on the trunk lid, the spoiler forces air flow pressure over the trunk and rear glass.

If there were no spoiler, then a vacuum of air would form in this place, which directly affects the downforce of the car, reducing it. The rear spoiler increases air flow resistance and thereby allows the car to increase downforce, that is, grip on the road surface.

In addition, the rear spoiler, due to its location, dilutes the created air pressure under the car body, which also increases the aerodynamics of the car.

If there is a skirt on the body and it is mounted on the front bumper, then this leads to a decrease in the air flow pressure under the car, which affects the quality of downforce while driving. In addition, the spoiler in front of the car additionally increases air resistance due to its shape, however, it is for this reason that air friction on the bottom of the car is reduced, which, ultimately, again makes it possible to increase the quality of grip on the road. And one more additional property of the front spoiler is that it has a beneficial effect on general work

cooling systems in cars.

How to choose the right spoiler for your car Having decided to give his “swallow” additional aerodynamic characteristics and refine its appearance, the car owner decides to choose for himself perfect option

spoiler. The choice of product should be based both on the financial capabilities of the car enthusiast and on those design features

machines that will/will not allow the installation of one or another type of product. It should be noted that not every spoiler can be installed on a specific car model. For example, for sedans almost any spoiler is suitable due to the specifics of their body - a shortened and tightened relief. Owners of such cars actively install lip spoilers of the most different forms

Standing out in an endless stream of cars in the city is not easy

How to make a car spoiler with your own hands

Wanting to save on the purchase of a factory spoiler and its installation, some car enthusiasts are attempting to make this element with their own hands. It should be noted that self-production a spoiler is considered enough challenging task, since the slightest flaws in its design can worsen the dynamic characteristics of the machine.

In addition, mistakes made when installing a homemade spoiler can directly affect the development of body corrosion. However, if you are determined to make a spoiler for your car yourself, you can choose one of the most common options for making this element. In any case, you will need to prepare in advance necessary tools

  • and supporting material:
  • scissors;
  • metal scissors;
  • stationery knife;
  • hacksaw;
  • glue;
  • Sander;
  • sandpaper;
  • masking tape;
  • markers;
  • degreaser;
  • primer paint;

auto enamel;

Making a Rear Spoiler from Galvanized Iron and Foam

  1. The production of a spoiler begins with its design. The first step is to decide on its shape and size. It will not be possible to do this “by eye”, since every millimeter of this product must be clearly verified:
  2. The design of the spoiler should be determined with the help of an experienced car owner who already has experience in manufacturing such products or by involving an engineer.
  3. The template is made on cardboard; to create it, you will need to measure the width of the car and the trunk lid, and mark the mounting location on the body.
  4. After creating the template on cardboard, you need to cut it out.
  5. Next, you will need to trace a sheet of galvanized iron according to the template and cut out the spoiler frame with metal scissors. Traditionally, galvanized sheets with a thickness of at least 1.5 mm are used. After making the frame, you will need to increase the volume on it. One of the most simple ways
  6. to do this is to use polystyrene foam. Separate parts of the future spoiler are cut out of a piece of foam plastic using a stationery knife.
  7. Each part must be glued into place on the galvanized sheet.
  8. After gluing, gelcoat (aluminum dust) is applied to the foam layer, and fiberglass fabric is applied on top of it. In this case, the fabric should be laid in several layers so that each new layer is denser and stronger than the previous one.
  9. It is important that when laying fiberglass there are no air bubbles between the layers. After creation The entire surface of the spoiler must be coated with a polyester resin composition.
  10. Once the product has dried, it will need to be sanded thoroughly.

Please note that primer, paint and varnish are applied only to a flat surface.

The step-by-step process for making a fiberglass spoiler is given below:

  1. The shape of the future spoiler is first drawn on cardboard, after which the required fiberglass blank is cut out according to the template.
  2. The struts and flaps are cut from the same material.
  3. These elements are fixed to the very base of the spoiler adhesive composition.
  4. After creating the frame, you will need to cover it with fiberglass fabric.
  5. When the reconstruction of a denser structure is completed, it is recommended to impregnate the fiberglass with resin with the addition of aluminum powder to increase its strength.
  6. After the workpiece has dried, it will need to be sanded to create an ideal smooth surface.
  7. Next comes painting work.

Fiberglass fabric is actively used in the manufacture of spoilers

We make a front spoiler from chipboard, polystyrene foam and polyurethane foam

Making a spoiler for the front bumper can not only give the car increased aerodynamic properties, but radically change the appearance of the car. However, the manufacturing technology of the front spoiler is somewhat different from the design of the rear spoiler.

To make a spoiler from materials stored idle in your garage, just follow the algorithm below:

  1. First you need to remove the front bumper from the car body. This will simplify all further operations.
  2. Then it is necessary to glue the pieces of foam plastic to the chipboard blank with a reliable adhesive composition - both from the outside and from the inside.
  3. Polyurethane foam will need to fill all the voids that will inevitably arise between the glued pieces of foam.
  4. After the foam has dried, you will need to use a utility knife and special files to give the spoiler the required shape.
  5. Next, several layers of putty are applied, which are designed to give the element a finished appearance.
  6. After the putty has dried, you will need to sand the surface of the spoiler well to eliminate all types of irregularities.
  7. At the final stage, primer, enamel and varnish are applied.

After gluing with polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam is applied

We make side skirts from plaster

Side spoilers or body kits are somewhat easier to make due to their relatively small size:

  1. You will need to paste plaster over the area on the side of the body where you plan to install the spoiler.
  2. When applying plaster, it is necessary to leave an opening for air.
  3. After the plaster has hardened, it is necessary to sand the entire surface of the future spoiler and give it perfect smoothness.
  4. It is recommended to fill the gaps between the pieces of plaster and along the edge of the spoiler with regular mounting foam.
  5. After the foam has hardened, it is necessary to cut off its excess with a knife.
  6. Then again follows the stage of carefully polishing the entire surface of the spoiler.
  7. Once the spoiler has been given perfect smoothness, you can begin degreasing and painting it.

Thus, the spoiler can be made from a variety of materials - chipboard, galvanized iron, gypsum, foam plastic, fiberglass, etc. It all depends on the experience of the car enthusiast and his skills in working with certain materials and tools.

At the moment, spoilers on cars are considered especially chic, as they give the body a more toned and attractive look. However, when self-tuning When it comes to your car, you need to know when to stop, since installing spoilers on the roof, both bumpers and along the edges can turn the car into an unattractive vehicle, completely devoid of aerodynamics. The operation of such a car will be unsafe, first of all, for the owner himself.
