Specialization: Capital construction works (laying of foundations, erection of walls, construction of a roof, etc.). Internal construction work (laying of internal communications, rough and final finishing). Hobby: mobile communication, high tech, computer technology, programming.

Today I want to talk about how to choose an acrylic bathtub: expert advice is usually of little help to those who like to buy plumbing on their own, since many experts do not touch upon some of the criteria that must be considered before purchasing.

I will try to fill this gap. The instruction presented to your attention below not only tells about the main pros and cons of acrylic bathtubs, but also describes the performance properties that are important for the average consumer (size, shape, strength, method of reinforcement, and so on).

Positive and negative properties of acrylic bathtubs

Acrylic is a plumbing device that has appeared not so long ago, the popularity of which is growing by leaps and bounds. Such a bathroom, as the name suggests, is made of sheet plastic - acrylic - by pressing it in a heated state.

To give strength, the bath bowl is reinforced with epoxy resins and placed in a special frame. Thanks to this method of processing finished goods acquire special advantages and disadvantages, which I have outlined in the form of a small table:

pros Minuses
Products have low thermal inertia and perfectly keep water temperature. The liquid in the bowl cools down much more slowly than in plumbing fixtures made of other materials. The acrylic bowl has insufficient static strength. When filled with water, it maintains its own shape worse than a bath made of steel or cast iron. Therefore, plastic products are usually placed in an additional reinforcing frame.
Acrylic is highly plastic, therefore it tolerates external shock well. A heavy object dropped into the bowl will not damage the surface. The acrylic surface can be scratched. Especially if abrasive detergents are used for cleaning.
The polymer surface is well cleaned from various contaminants. Usually, rinsing the tub with warm water is sufficient. In particular difficult cases you will have to use a liquid detergent without abrasive particles. The price of a product made of high-quality acrylic is much higher than that of an ordinary cast-iron or metal bath... However, it all depends on the size, model and other factors.
Due to the ease of processing sheet acrylic, it is from it that a huge number of baths are made, differing from each other in size and shape.
The acrylic bathtub weighs very little. Typically, the weight of a medium-sized product, not equipped with engines, filters and compressors, does not exceed 45 kg.
The service life of a quality product from a European manufacturer can exceed 20 years, subject to the rules of its operation. At the same time, the initial performance characteristics remain unchanged throughout the entire period of operation.
The surface of the plastic has antiseptic properties. On the surface of the bathtub, harmful microorganisms that can harm human health do not grow.

This concludes the list of the main pros and cons. But before I tell you which acrylic bathtub to choose, I want to dwell a little more on the differences between plastic products and more traditional ones - made of cast iron and metal.

Differences from steel and cast iron products

I introduced you to the features of acrylic bathtubs in the previous section. To understand how a cast-iron bath differs from a polymer bath, I will list the most important advantages of the first option:

  1. The cast iron bath is extremely durable. Unless you specifically set yourself this goal, breaking the cup is almost impossible. However, this does not apply to external decorative coating from enamel. Firstly, it is abraded during operation, and secondly, it can be easily damaged as a result of an impact.
  2. The enamel, which covers the cast iron, has practically no pores in which dirt can accumulate. Therefore, it is very easy to care for a cast iron sanitary ware.
  3. A cast iron bathtub keeps heat well. Hot water inside the bowl will cool more slowly than in an iron or acrylic structure.
  4. Once acquired, a cast-iron bathtub, subject to the conditions of its operation, will faithfully serve not only you, but also your children. And even grandchildren. You will have to change it to something else only if you decide to somehow "refresh" the design of the plumbing room.

As you can see, the cast iron bath has excellent performance characteristics. And I would gladly give the palm to her, if not for a few nuances:

  • the product weighs more than 120 kg, so there may be problems with its transportation and installation (especially if you live in a high-rise building without a freight elevator);
  • a considerable part of the thermal energy of water goes to heating cast iron, therefore, for a comfortable bath, you will have to adjust the temperature of the liquid accordingly;
  • shape and appearance cast iron baths do not differ in originality due to the difficulties with the processing of this material.

However, in addition to cast iron, there is also steel. After all, it was steel bathtubs that were used for installation in most of the sanitary facilities in houses built in the second half of the last century. Therefore, it's time to figure out which is better - a steel or acrylic bath. In my opinion, here, too, the latter option is more attractive. Let me explain why:

  1. Inexpensive steel tubs have thin metal walls that deform with use. Cracks, chips and other defects appear on the enamel, which cause inconvenience when performing hygiene procedures. And the cost of more expensive products with thick walls approaches the price of high-quality acrylic and cast-iron models, which negates the advantage in cheapness.
  2. Steel has a high thermal conductivity, therefore hot water poured into the bath cools quickly. You will not be able to fully enjoy the pleasant pastime in the foam by candlelight.
  3. When filling the bowl, the stream of water makes a loud noise that is audible not only to you, but also to all neighbors. This problem can be partially solved by warming and soundproofing the product with polyurethane foam.
  4. A metal bath during use requires mandatory grounding, which is not always possible due to the absence of a corresponding cable in the electrical wiring.
  5. Due to the design, the steel product is difficult to install reliably in the bathroom. Usually, experts resort to all sorts of tricks, described in detail in the articles on this site.

Plus in defense steel baths I can only name the low cost. However, it does not pay for the problems that you can get by installing such a structure in your home.

I hope we have come to the same denominator with you on the question of whether a cast iron, acrylic or iron bathtub is better. But to fully enjoy the benefits of buying, you need to purchase a quality product. Precisely because how to choose the right bathtub, the next section is devoted.

Criterias of choice

Most people contacting me for help by choice acrylic bath, are only interested in which ones are better in quality. However, there are still many questions, the answers to which need to be found out before buying. I have depicted them in the diagram so that you can familiarize yourself:

And now about each of them in more detail.

Question 1 - Material of manufacture

Acrylic itself is a polymer composed of many different compounds of methyl acrylics and polyesters. However, two different materials are actually used to make plastic bathtubs:

  1. ABS / PMMA A two-component polymer that consists of acrylonetrile butanediene styrene and polymethyl methacrylate. The first is a kind of resilient plastic and the second is a kind of organic glass.

The ABS plays the role of the base. Up to 90% of the entire raw material mass used in the process of casting a bath is made from it. And the outer layer - PMMA - is only 5-10% of the total volume.

The disadvantage of such a technological process is obvious - the outer thin layer of acrylic wears off within a maximum of 5 years of operation. And the base has a very porous structure, which is highly hygroscopic. ABS absorbs a large amount of moisture, which quickly leads to its destruction.

  1. PMMA stands for polymethyl methacrylate. Durable, sleek and beautiful plastic, which has high performance properties. In the manufacture of baths from pure PMMA, porous ABS plastic is completely absent, due to which the products are distinguished by high wear resistance and have a long service life.

All of the above does not mean that I categorically do not recommend purchasing composite baths (ABS + PMMA). You just need to evaluate the scope of its use. If you buy a plumbing product for a summer residence that is not intended for permanent residence, then the cheaper option is quite acceptable.

When buying an acrylic bathtub at home, it’s better to spend money and purchase a version made from solid PMMA. In this case, the increased initial costs are fully justified by the long service life.

It is not difficult to visually distinguish products from each other. To do this, you need to look at the side of the plumbing model you have chosen:

  • if you see no more than two layers - the bathtub is made of PMMA (the second layer is reinforcement);
  • if three layers are visible on the cut, there is a composite of ABS and PMMA.

Question 2 - Wall thickness

The end of an acrylic bath, by the way, is useful not only to determine the technology of its manufacture. You need to immediately check the thickness of the walls of the product. Typically, classic models of sanitary ware have acrylic thickness from 2 to 6.5 mm. Not only the strength of the bowl depends on it, but also the durability of the bath.

So, what should be the thickness of the rim of an acrylic bathtub? A small table will help you understand this.

On the quality of the inner surface of the bowl. It should be perfectly smooth without chips, cracks, scratches or bumps. If a shop assistant assures you that a rough surface is made to resist slipping, don't believe him. Most likely, he wants to sell you a substandard.

If you firmly press your palm against the acrylic and try to move your hand, it should not slide over the surface. This is what testifies to the ideal quality of plastic processing (that is, its smoothness is close to window glass).

Question 3 - Reinforcement methods

The acrylic bowl itself does not differ in increased strength, since the plastic used for its manufacture has great flexibility and ductility. However, you will be surprised how much weight the sanitary ware in question can withstand. This is achieved by means of a reinforcing layer, which is applied at the factory to the outer surface of the bath.

For reinforcement, epoxy resins are used, which are applied in layers. How large quantity layers you count and the thicker they are, the more significant load the bathtub will withstand.

It is important to consider one point here. The epoxy should cover the entire bowl evenly from the outside. Some careless manufacturers in the production of plumbing lay most of the epoxy at the ends of the product (where they can be assessed visually), neglecting the high-quality processing of the rest of the surface.

To reliably assess the quality of the product you like, you need to do three things:

  1. Examine the end of the bath. A layer of acrylic and several layers of reinforcement should be visible.
  2. Press on the sides and bottom of the bowl. If the reinforcement is made with high quality, the polymer layer should not bend under load (like the lamellas of a plastic lining).
  3. Shine a flashlight on different parts of the bath surface. The amount of light penetrating the acrylic should be the same. If the lamp shines brighter through the bottom than through the walls, poor-quality casting of the product takes place, which can lead to its destruction during operation.

In order not to face fraud, I advise you to purchase products only from well-known manufacturers and in large plumbing stores. Having saved several hundred rubles on the market, you can subsequently face huge monetary losses when the water from the broken bowl will cause a flood for the neighbors below.

Question 4 - Size and shape

This selection criterion concerns not so much quality as ease of use. After all, a bath is not only a place for performing hygiene procedures, but also a way to relax after a hard day at work, or even get a boost of vivacity from hydrotherapy procedures.

From an ergonomic point of view, there are three important parameters to consider:

  1. Height. The optimum height for standard bath ranges from 65 to 70 cm from the floor. In this case, the plumbing fixture will be convenient for adults, children and the elderly alike.
  2. Depth. This parameter is calculated from the bottom level of the bowl to the point where the overflow hole is located. The optimal depth value should be in the range from 50 to 60 cm. If it is less, the water will not completely cover the body of the lying person. If it is more, the head will sink, which will force it to be held vertically (that is, it will not be possible to completely relax).
  3. Width. The standard value of this parameter is 80 cm. However, the convenience of using a standard bath depends on the size of most family members. For a large person, this width is not enough, so it is better to choose a larger option. Manufacturers have taken care of this by expanding the offered range with models in widths of 100, 120 and more centimeters.
  4. Length. The average bath length for a standard sanitary room is 150 to 180 cm.I can say with confidence that a 165 cm bath is quite enough for a person of average height (about 180 cm). However, there are also smaller models (for example, a sitz bath, etc. ). The relationship between the length of the bath and the position taken is very clearly visible in the illustration below.

When choosing, you need to take into account such a moment as the shape of the plumbing. I can conditionally single out two common options:

  1. Longitudinal bath. This model is installed with a headboard to one of the side walls of the sanitary room.
  2. Corner bath. Mounts to occupy a corner of the selected room.

This is not an exhaustive list. I have come across free-standing bathtub models, but they are only suitable for very spacious bathrooms, where you do not need to save free space and the size of the product is determined only by imagination and financial capabilities.

Question 5 - Bowl and frame strength

The ultimate strength of an acrylic bathtub depends on the technology by which it is made. A product made from solid PMMA is able to retain its original shape and dimensions when the bowl is fully filled. The composite material may deform slightly.

To avoid destruction under load, acrylic bowls are often installed in metal frames (they can be all-welded or assembled from separate parts). However, the outer frame significantly increases the final cost of the product.

The price in this case depends on the frame design:

  1. Bath bottom frame. It is a small crate made of steel profiled elements, which is located under the bottom of the plastic product. It is able to withstand significant vertical water pressure and the weight of the person inside, but does not reinforce the side walls of the bowl in any way.
  2. Frame for the entire bathtub. In this case, the crate has additional side elements. They prevent the acrylic from resizing under load, which greatly increases the service life of the entire product.

If the bath frame has too many support parts and legs, it is most likely that the plastic of the bowl itself is not very strong. And it is better to refuse to buy such a product.

Question 6 - Optional features

Long gone are the days when the bath was just a container of water, in which the dirt and sweat accumulated during the day were washed away. Now baths, including acrylic ones, have a large number of additional devices that improve the ergonomics of their operation:

  1. Jacuzzi. This is a bathroom with special nozzles that spray water and air. Stiff jets of water and a large amount of air bubbles have a relaxing effect on the human body.

  1. Chromotherapy. LEDs with reflectors are built into the sides and bottom of the acrylic bathtub, emitting light a certain spectrum (usually blue). It is believed that this effect on the skin stimulates blood circulation and has an anti-inflammatory effect.

  1. TV and radio. Some models of acrylic bathtubs are equipped with LCD and radio receivers, allowing you to enjoy water treatments while watching your favorite TV series or educational program.

  1. Electronic control units. Expensive bathtubs have special electronic units that control taps, heating devices, nozzles and lamps of sanitary ware. Moreover, such units can be integrated into Smart Home control systems. By customizing it, you will be able to take a bath that is prepared for a specific time.

As I said, in addition to all the listed criteria, it is important to pay attention to the manufacturer of the acrylic bathtub. In order not to face a marriage or simply poor quality products.

Manufacturers and brands

I cannot give a clear advice on which company to choose. Therefore, I will list the most popular manufacturers, indicating the features of their products:

The material reveals the question of what is an acrylic bathtub. Pros and cons, customer reviews and design solutions presented on the pages of the article. In addition, here you will find the following information:

  • acrylic as a material for a bath;
  • advantages and disadvantages;
  • comparison with cast iron and steel products;
  • reviews for popular models.

Acrylic - what is this material?

An acrylic bath is a laminated composite product made from acrylic resins. The part that comes into contact with water and skin is transparent plastic. The color is given to it by a special powder included in the liquid polymethyl methacrylate even before the polymerization stage.

Bathroom acrylic is called "plumbing" and contains substances that inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Basic properties:

  • plasticity - the material changes under the influence of heat;
  • durability - protection from fading;
  • low porosity - dirt and bacteria do not linger on the walls of the bath;
  • simplified restoration - defects are masked with home handicraft methods.

Physical characteristics of acrylic

In the production of baths, sheets of two materials are used, differing in thickness and manufacturing method:

  1. "Pure acrylic"(injection molding). The compound (polymer resin) is poured into an airtight mold between glasses and polymerized in a steam oven. This substance is hard and durable.
  2. Two-layer plastic. It is made by combining molten cast acrylic and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).

The structure of the acrylic bathtub has two surfaces. On the one hand, it is shock-resistant, on the other, it is glossy and smooth.

Plumbing fixtures are made of “pure” acrylic, after going through four mandatory steps:

  1. Forming - heating the sheet and stretching it to fit the size of the workpiece;
  2. Reinforcement - covering the back of the acrylic with a composite layer;
  3. Pruning - removing excess plastic;
  4. Assembly - placing the workpiece on the power frame and polishing it.

A separate type of two-component sheet is distinguished. Plus: cheapness. Disadvantage: worse quality - there is no required hardness of the coating, the design may turn out to be unreliable.

When choosing an acrylic bath, make sure that the thickness of the polymer used is less than 5-6 mm. The higher this figure, the more durable and durable the model.

Effect on the human body

Among the manufacturing methods, there is a method in which styrene is added to the raw material (necessary for reinforcement). The material is inexpensive, but contains toxic substances that evaporate over time and accumulate in the human body. Warm water increases the saturation of the vapors.

Styrene negatively affects the body, causing poisoning. We strongly recommend that you check with sales consultants about its presence / absence in the structure.

Most acrylic bath coverings are eco-friendly and hygienic... The smoothness of the walls provides effective washing away of bacteria and microorganisms - they do not have time to multiply.

Care and maintenance

The advantages and disadvantages of acrylic bathtubs make it possible to successfully use them everywhere. During operation, the question arises about the permissible and contraindicated methods of surface cleaning.

  • Abrasives are contraindicated - they damage the surface, like brushes with coarse bristles. Sponges are welcome from delicate materials.
  • Use liquid products for the care of the acrylic surface. To restore the shine of the surface, use a soft cloth previously soaked in a special cleaner for acrylic bathtubs.

If, despite the precautions, scratches appear on the surface, clean them with fine sandpaper. Then polish with a detergent - there will be no trace of defects.

Due to the poor quality of the water, water stone forms on the walls of the bath. The problem is being solved citric acid(or 7% vinegar solution). It takes one pack of acid or one and a half liters of vinegar to remove limescale.

5 facts you didn't know about the pros and cons of acrylic bathtubs!

  1. The history of acrylic bathtubs is not so many years old. The appearance of acrylic models dates back to the end of the 20th century.
  2. Cast acrylic structures are considered to be more durable and reliable than their extrusion counterparts.
  3. Be careful - instead of a high-quality product, you come across fakes made of ABS plastic, disguised with a reinforcing compound and a thin layer of extruded acrylic.
  4. The lack of enamel on the walls should not be considered a disadvantage. It is allowed to install a hydromassage attachment, which would otherwise damage the enamel layer.
  5. The acrylic surface is resistant to limescale and rust, and resists oxidation.

The content of the article:

In order to take a bath, it is enough to fill a cast-iron or metal container with warm water. Most people have classic models made of cast iron or metal in their bathrooms. But new items from acrylic are so far popular only abroad. Why does the choice of practical Europeans fall on synthetics? To understand this, you do not have to take risks: buy a new product, install it and immediately try it from all sides. Let's try to theoretically approach the issue, and consider all the pros and cons of acrylic bathtubs.

Practical acrylic - how to make bathtubs from it

When choosing something to bathe while renovating a bathroom, you considered several options. And if you settled on an acrylic bathtub and purchased it, then most likely you were guided by product reviews. What else do you need to know about this practical synthetic material and products made from it?

The technology for the production of synthetic bathtubs came from European countries... It has been used there for more than ten years, while the quality of the product is not in doubt. And the product itself is in stable demand.

Its essence is as follows. In a production that works with plastic, a synthetic material - acrylic is melted under the influence of high temperatures. When a substance is melted enough to bend and stretch, it is shaped. The plasticity of acrylic allows the production of containers different forms, volumes and sizes. For example, it is very easy to achieve unusual asymmetric shapes or custom-made sizes. After the stage at which the product is shaped and left to cool, the next stage comes - giving strength.

By itself, acrylic is not strong enough to support the weight of water and humans. It may sag or crack. Therefore, the polymer body is "reinforced" with reinforcement. The hardening step includes the application of a metal mesh, then glass fibers and epoxy resin... Several layers are applied - the more there are, the stronger and better the product is.

Pros of an acrylic bathtub

The high quality of polymeric materials makes the service life quite long: 10 years or more. Even after 20 years, an acrylic bathtub will remain to serve the owners, if you follow all the rules for caring for it. She is not afraid of loss of color and scratches. The latter, if visible, can be leveled with the surface with the finest sandpaper. This is the main advantage, but there are several more that make the choice towards acrylic decisive:
  1. Strength. The cast iron bottom can be damaged if you drop something heavy, but the acrylic one does not.
  2. Low weight. For the delivery of the selected polymer product, this quality will simply make the loaders happy. If the weight of the cast-iron "brother" is about 100 kg, then the polymer product weighs about 30 kg.
  3. Form. To create a unique atmosphere in the bathroom, you can choose exactly your option - a huge variety of forms.
  4. Ease of care. You don't need to buy special to wash it. chemical agents... Sufficient soap and water.
  5. Keeps warm for a long time. If you fill a metal container with warm water and lie down, then after 10 minutes you can freeze in such a bath. Therefore, keeping heat for a long time (about an hour) is one of the advantages of an acrylic bath.
  6. Does not lose color. It is not at all necessary to buy a snow-white version of plumbing. You can buy an acrylic bathtub of any shade and not be afraid that the color will fade over time. Manufacturing technology involves not applying paint to the body, but making the desired color at the manufacturing stage directly into a plastic polymer.
  7. Has hydromassage. Relaxing effect air bubbles consumers and manufacturers of bathtubs know. Taking advantage of the simplicity of technology and all the possibilities of polymers, most models are equipped with equipment for hydromassage.

Few Disadvantages - Cons of Acrylic Bathtubs

The disadvantages of acrylic bathtubs are back side their merits. For example, its lightness requires strengthening the frame. Installing such a bathtub on four legs will not work - there will be no stability. The walls of the container will begin to move slightly. Installation requires professional work to avoid deformation.

The choice is wide enough that many plumbing stores will have to go around to find the right product. You can shorten your hiking time if you learn how to choose the right acrylic bathtub. When this ceases to be a mystery for you, then the moment will come to visit a special store. A purchased item for water treatments, selected in accordance with technical characteristics, will last a long time, and will not have any drawbacks.

Convenience and durability come at a price. Therefore, the high cost of the bath can be a disadvantage for someone. The most expensive models have strength due to many reinforced layers, and a layer of acrylic from 6 mm. Prices start from 9,000 rubles to 30,000 rubles. The average price tag of a good acrylic container will cost 17-22 thousand rubles.

If you are planning to change old bath then it will be useful for you to learn about modern acrylic models. In addition, you should know what are the strengths and weaknesses acrylic bathtubs, what to look for when choosing suitable model, as well as what is the average market value of products from different manufacturing firms.

To begin with, this material can be of two types.

  1. Industrial acrylic. As the name suggests, it is used in the industrial field (as a filling for molds), in particular, in the manufacture of various devices, mechanical engineering, as well as for construction and restoration work.
  2. Technical acrylic. It is he who is used in the manufacture of bathtubs. The reason for this is extremely simple: special components that are added to acrylic glass disinfect the surface and prevent the growth of various kinds of bacteria, fungi and other harmful microorganisms.

You should also familiarize yourself with the basic properties of acrylic - this will help you make the right choice.

Increased strengthIn the course of numerous tests, which were carried out on an acrylic substance, it was possible to identify high strength properties of the material, close to those of cast iron.
Resistance to mechanical damageYes, it is forbidden to clean the acrylic bathtub with alcohol-based or abrasive cleaning agents, but it is resistant to defects such as cracks, scratches and chips. Moreover, if any damage appears, it can be easily repaired with polishes or car pastes.
PlasticThanks to this property, finished products can take on a variety of shapes.
SoundproofingWater jets, as well as other influences, create almost no noise.
Low weightOn average, it is from 15 kg to 35 kg, which greatly simplifies assembly work and the load on the floors in the apartment decreases.
Low thermal conductivityThis material keeps the water temperature much longer than cast iron.
Low porosityIndicates that dirt and other substances acting on the surface of the bath are almost not eaten in, which means that they do not worsen the appearance.
Environmental safety, hygieneMicroorganisms do not stay on the surface of the material, therefore they do not multiply there (if the product has an antibacterial coating).

Also note that acrylic baths today are produced in one of two possible ways.

Method one. Casting

This method is characterized by higher performance in terms of durability and wear resistance. During the production process, the acrylic sheet is heated until it acquires the required degree of softness, after which the product is formed. All this takes place in special molds under vacuum and with the use of specialized fiberglass.

Note! The number of fiberglass layers, by the way, can be any, and the more there are, the stronger finished structure... It is for this reason that acrylic bathtubs are more expensive than conventional ones.

Method two. Use of acrylonetrile butadiene styrene (ABS)

It differs from the previous one only in that it implies the additional use of ABS - the material that covers the molten acrylic. The thickness of the finished ABS baths is insignificant, therefore it is strictly not recommended to expose them to mechanical stress. Moreover, the service life of such products does not exceed 3-4 years.

Acrylic bath: pros and cons

It's not that hard to familiarize yourself with the pros and cons. We will try to objectively understand the situation in order to correctly and comprehensively evaluate these plumbing fixtures. Let's start with the disadvantages.

Flaws

  1. Acrylic is not very effective at resisting elevated temperatures. This means that at temperatures above 160 ° C, the material simply begins to melt. As for direct contact with the flame, then in this case there can be no question of the integrity of the structure.
  2. The cost of acrylic baths is quite high, but here you should take into account its ratio with the operational life. So, an ordinary acrylic bathtub, which is quite expensive, can last about 10 years, while a product made of high-quality material can last up to 20 years.
  3. Budget models often have extremely low durability. Thin-walled structures can deform when filled. It is for this reason that it is better to refuse cheap plumbing.
  4. Acrylic is sensitive to detergents. For washing steel and cast iron, you can use various means, but if applied to an acrylic surface, the result can be disastrous. Scratches from abrasive particles may appear, the material may darken, discoloration.

Do not forget that it is almost impossible to assess the quality of acrylic "by eye". For this reason, it is advisable to buy a bath only at trusted retail outlets, focusing on a specific manufacturer. Today there are many reputable companies offering high quality products (we'll talk about them in more detail later).

So, we figured out the disadvantages, you can move on to the advantages.

Advantages of acrylic baths

Despite such a number of disadvantages, the advantages in most cases still outweigh, which is why people prefer acrylic bathtubs over their steel / cast iron counterparts.

Consider the main advantages of the described plumbing fixtures.

How Do I Pick a Good Acrylic Bathtub?

If we consider all of the above, then we can come to the conclusion: a good acrylic bathtub at least deserves attention. Buying such a product for your bathroom is, in most cases, the right decision. But at the same time, difficulties may arise with the choice of a specific model, so now we will find out what parameters should be considered when buying.

Table 2. Selection criteria for acrylic bathtubs

Criteriona brief description of
Company manufacturerFirst of all, pay attention to the manufacturer of the bathtub. On the modern market there are many Chinese products that are cheap, but the quality is appropriate. Trust the brand that has been on the market for over 5 years and is represented in major plumbing stores.
ScreenA feature of the described products is that a special screen is developed individually for each series. Many manufacturers supply them in a set, made to match the design and color of the bathtub.
Acrylic thicknessAnother important indicator. The greater the thickness of the material, the stronger and more durable the structure itself. Most of the models have a sheet thickness of 2-4 mm, although sometimes this figure reaches 5-6 mm.
Additional optionsOften, manufacturers, trying to justify the overpriced and hide the low quality of their products, equip baths with additional supports, inserts and other "bells and whistles". In reality, this is a standard red herring.
"Is this really acrylic?"Often, manufacturers issue ordinary plastic products covered with a 1- or 2-millimeter layer of acrylic as acrylic bathtubs in order to reduce the cost of the production process. Therefore, if you are offered to purchase a product with an acrylic sheet thickness of 8 mm, then you should doubt it. Most likely, you are being forced to buy a regular composite plastic.
FormVarious decorative elements are always good. But to get, for example, unusual shape or the same inserts can be used extremely thin acrylic, which, as we have already found out, does not impart strength.
Number of layersQuality products are made from two layers - acrylic and polyurethane. It is also better to refuse to buy a bathtub in which there are more layers.
FrameIf traces are visible on the frame welding works or corrosion, the workmanship of such a product is poor. In this case, it is better to refuse to buy, because if the manufacturer himself strengthened the structure, this indicates not his concern, but the dubious quality of production.
Acrylic strengthPress lightly on the bottom. If it bends, then we are talking about an ordinary plastic fake.
TransparencyAcrylic is opaque. You can bring the switched on flashlight to the wall of the product: if it shines through, then everything is clearly not all right here. The bathtub is either tampered with or has too thin a layer of acrylic. In any case, it is also better to refrain from buying.
CoatingTo increase reliability and durability, manufacturers of quality products use a polyurethane layer for the outer coating. Less responsible firms are replacing polyurethane with fiberglass and ester resins.

Note! High quality outer cover is odorless, while low quality can smell unpleasant.

As you can see, the criteria the right choice quite a lot, but only they will help with the purchase of really good and durable plumbing, which still for a long time no need to change or repair.

The price in our case always depends on the quality of the materials used in the manufacture and the thickness of the sides. Other characteristics that affect the price include shape and additional built-in devices. If you prefer minimalism, then your bath will cost from 5,000 to 9,000 rubles. More functional tuning plumbing will cost more - at least 20,000 rubles.

Also, the cost depends on the specific manufacturer. Western models, for example, offer bathtubs that cost from 10,000. Finally, if you decide to purchase a product equipped with chrome handrails, beautiful legs and faucets, then be prepared to pay at least 50,000 rubles for it. Consider the average market prices of the most popular modern manufacturers.

The list you just checked is not limited to the brands described, as there are many other manufacturers.

Note! According to consumers, the best manufacturers the following are considered: Riho, OSM, Teuko, Relisan, Golf, Radomir and Ravak. The products of these brands are characterized by a long service life and high strength indicators.

The cheapest products are produced by manufacturers from Turkey, China and Russia. However, the quality of such plumbing often leaves much to be desired, since low-quality polymer is used in all these countries. For this reason, it is better to give preference to Western brands.

From all this, we can conclude that it is better to buy products from well-known manufacturers (even if it will cost more), since the service life of such baths is quite long, and there will be no difficulties in leaving. Otherwise, there is a risk of running into a fake. Cheaper acrylic bathtubs, devoid of decorative elements and additional options, in terms of quality and operational characteristics they are practically in no way inferior to their expensive counterparts.

Private damages and how to fix them

To begin with, all damage to acrylic bathtubs is conventionally divided into two large groups.

  1. Chemical. These are “burns” caused by the use of an unsuitable or overly powerful cleaning agent. As a rule, they are observed after repeated soaking of laundry, because washing powder has a negative effect on the material. Conventional polishing is used to remove these "burns".
  2. Mechanical. Various cracks, chips and scratches are considered serious defects. But acrylic is unique, even a 10-centimeter hole can be repaired in it. It is even easier to eliminate cracks up to 50 cm.

To repair the damage, you must first of all purchase a repair kit for acrylic bathtubs, which consists of:

  • liquid acrylic;
  • epoxy glue (it is used to repair scratches smaller than 0.1 cm);
  • special hardener;
  • solvent (required for degreasing work surfaces);
  • "Sandpaper";
  • polishing paper (you will use it for finishing).

With this repair kit, you can repair almost any crack or scratch.

Option number 1. Small scratches

To eliminate "burns" and minor scratches, prepare:

  • "Sandpaper" of different grain size;
  • polish.

Step 1. Sand all surface damage first. Do this in several steps: first use coarse sandpaper, then gradually reduce the grit.

If the scratch is more than 1 mm thick, follow these steps.

Step 1. Sand the damage thoroughly with sandpaper.

Step 2. Poke holes at the ends of the cracks, rinse and dry thoroughly.

Step 3... Prepare a piece of repair tape of the required length, remove protective film and stick it (tape) to the scratch.

Step 4. Smooth out the repair tape, remove all air bubbles. You can use the bathroom after three hours.

Option number 2. Cracks

With them, everything is much more complicated. Here you will need either a repair kit or the special tape mentioned above. These kits are different, but each of them should have everything you need. The missing components can be purchased at any specialized store.

Below is an algorithm of actions for elimination of a crack.

Step 1. Expand the crack to increase the adhesion of the old acrylic to the new one (up to about 1 mm).

Step 2. Thoroughly clean and degrease the required area.

Step 3. Prepare a batch of liquid acrylic according to the manufacturer's instructions. As a result, the mixture should have a resin-like consistency.

Step 4. Treat the required area with liquid acrylic, level the material over the surface.

Step 5. Cover the cracked crack with tape. Drying time depends on the specific repair kit and can be up to 12 hours. During this time, do not touch the bath, otherwise the new layer of material will not adhere to the old one.

Step 6. Remove the tape, and treat the area to be restored with alcohol, then sand with the sheets provided.

If you follow the instructions, you will repair any crack and restore the original appearance of your bathtub.

Option number 3. Through holes

If something massive accidentally falls on the bathtub, not only the enamel will have to be restored, as on metal product... There is a whole hole in the acrylic.

To close it, follow the instructions.

Step 1... On the opposite edges of the hole, make a couple of indentations with a diameter of 2-3 mm.

Step 2. Clean the holes thoroughly using fine-grained sandpaper and then degrease with alcohol.

Step 3. The repair kit should contain instructions according to which you have to prepare a mixture of acrylic and hardener.

Step 4... Apply the mixture in one layer to the desired area.

Step 5. Press the reinforcing material into the mix, right over the hole.

Step 6. Apply the second coat so that the entire reinforcement patch is covered.

Step 7. Wait until the acrylic mixture is completely dry (the specific time is indicated in the instructions). After that, sand the sealed area with medium-grit sandpaper, then fine sandpaper.

Step 8. Re-treat the crack with alcohol, then apply a special polish there (should be included in the kit).

Step 9. Finally, polish the surface of the product with a flannel.

As a result, the hole will disappear and the bath will look like new.

Option number 4. Stains

If small stains appear on the surface, you can remove them with a cleaning agent. If they are more serious, then you can't just remove them - this will require toothpaste, acrylic or silver polishing.

Method one... Treat the stain with chemical. product and wait a couple of minutes, then rinse with a sponge and rinse with water. You can repeat the procedure if necessary.

Method two... Fill the bowl with water, dilute the detergent there. Wait 1-2 hours, drain the water and rinse the surfaces thoroughly.

Note! You can use hot vinegar or lemon juice- moisten a cloth with one of the means and walk it over the surfaces (it is forbidden to fill the bowl with them).

Method three... If the previous methods did not give the desired result, use liquid acrylic... Cover the stain with acrylic, and then process it with toothpaste.

As you can see, even such disadvantages as low resistance to damage and chemicals are insignificant compared to the advantages, since they can be easily eliminated. Moreover, the comfort and lightness of acrylic will always evoke extremely pleasant sensations.
