Painting forged products with your own hands. How to paint forged products. Inhibitor and modifier will make it easier to clean the gate

Painting of forged gratings, peaks, gates, etc. - this is the final stage of their manufacture. The choice of paint for forged products depends on their appearance and service life.

When choosing a paint for forged products, it is necessary to consider only metal coatings. Considering that as a material for artistic forging ordinary steel is used, which is prone to rust, as well as the roughness of the metal surface and the presence of many joints at the joints of parts, forging paint must meet the following requirements:

  1. Contain anti-corrosion components. Painting should protect the forging from rust and impact. environment during operation, because often Forged Products located on the street: outdoor fences, visors, lanterns, twisted fences and gates, decorative forged figurines, etc.
  2. Wide temperature range of use (for outdoor use). The paint must be resistant to temperature fluctuations of the region in which it is planned to use it, for Russia this range is on average from -40 to +40 °С. Pay attention to the data specified by the manufacturer so that the coating does not crack in winter and does not spread in summer.
  3. Resistance to mechanical damage. The coating should not be scratched from minor damage and impacts.
  4. Have high adhesion. The coating should not peel off during operation. High-quality staining allows forged products to look new for several years.
  5. UV resistant. It should not fade and change its color.
  6. Plastic. It should lie evenly on a rough surface, mask welded joints well and paint over hard-to-reach places. This will ensure an attractive appearance of the finished product and protect it from rust formation.
  7. Environmental friendliness. Choose a non-toxic composition, especially for painting interior wrought iron products (fireplace grates, lamps, etc.). It is important that the paint is non-toxic not only during application, but also after drying.

If metal patination (giving the effect of antiquity) is chosen as the finishing touch, it is necessary that the paint with which the patina is applied lies evenly, does not wear off and does not lose color.

For coating forged products, the following coloring compositions are mainly used:

  • alkyd enamels;
  • oil enamels;
  • acrylic;
  • nitro enamels.

Alkyd and oil enamels give the product a glossy look. They are suitable for both outdoor and internal works. They are made on the basis of solvents such as white spirit. Oil enamels are rarely used when painting forging, as they quickly burn out and poorly protect against rust.

Alkyd paints for metal give the product a deep saturated color. They fit well on metal, resistant to environmental influences. Such coatings are widely used in forging. For example, Zerta's blacksmith's paint became very popular. This company produces both enamels and patina.

The disadvantage of alkyd paints is long drying and toxicity. When painting interior forged parts, it is necessary to regularly ventilate the room. In addition, enamels diluted with alcohol are very flammable.

Acrylic paints belong to the group of water-dispersed substances. painted acrylic paint The product has a deep matte finish. Coatings do not fade, do not crack, do not spread, withstand high temperatures (up to 120°C). The paint is water-soluble, however, after drying it is resistant to water. non-toxic acrylic coatings very popular in artistic forging.

Nitroenamels have undeniable advantages - they are cheap and dry very quickly. However, their high toxicity and flammability led to their displacement from modern market blacksmith's paints are more environmentally friendly counterparts.

By consistency, all coloring agents for metal are divided into:

  • powder;
  • liquid.

In the first case, the product is powder-coated with its further baking. The need to use an oven limits the size of the product that can be painted in this way. Polymer spraying is best suited for painting large flat surfaces without curls. In this case, a very even and durable polymer film is formed.

Liquid paints are more versatile, they are suitable for products of any shape. They can be applied with a roller, brush or spray. Compared to powder, they are less economical to use, but they allow you to paint over even very small patterned details with high quality. When working with such paints, it should be remembered that in the liquid phase they are toxic.

Application rules

In order for the paint to lie evenly, adhering to the metal surface as much as possible, the forged product must be prepared before painting. Product processing steps include:

  1. Surface cleaning and rust removal old paint if it is a re-staining. It is best to clean the parts with sandblasting equipment, you can also use metal brushes or coarse sandpaper.
  2. Surface degreasing. It is enough to wipe all parts with a rag soaked in alcohol or solvent.
  3. Applying a protective coating to prevent rust formation.
  4. Primer. Prepares the surface before painting.
  5. The actual application of paint on metal.

Modern paints and varnishes reduce the number of operations.

You can purchase two- or three-component paints, which include both a rust preventative, a primer, and a decorative coloring component.

In this case, the entire process of preparing the surface to be painted is reduced to cleaning and degreasing.

From right choice paint, as well as the quality of its application, depends on the type of finished forged product. It can both hide production flaws and emphasize the advantages of a lattice or fence, and vice versa, highlight all the flaws. Therefore, you need to carefully consider her choice.

And what types of paints do you use for painting forged products? Leave your feedback in the comments, your experience may be useful.

Metal structures are found everywhere. IN country house this metal fences, forged fences, forged railings and forged canopies. In a city apartment, we install wrought iron bars on windows, wrought iron elements on a balcony or loggia. Is it possible to paint forged products? Many people are sure that it is impossible and consider this the main drawback of such metal structures. But this statement is fundamentally wrong. Forged products can and should be painted in order to avoid rust in the first place.

Rust causes huge, sometimes irreparable damage to metal structures, forged products. Corrosion not only worsens the appearance of products, it reduces their strength, and in some, especially advanced cases, it can completely destroy them. Protect metal constructions and forged products from the harmful effects of rust can only be special compositions.

Very often in order to protect forged products from aggressive influences external environment, metal galvanizing is often used. This method is considered one of the most reliable methods protection of metal structures. Galvanizing is done by welding a zinc coating to the metal. Zinc melts and protects wrought iron railings, wrought iron gratings or wrought iron visors as long as its anodes are working.

But this method has one big disadvantage- lack of external attractiveness. Special forge paint can give the necessary decorative effect to the product, but it is possible to paint a forged product only six months after galvanizing.

Special blacksmith paints are made taking into account the features inherent in forged products. As a rule, blacksmith paints have increased adhesion, moisture resistance, resistance to any atmospheric influences. A forged product coated with such a composition is not afraid of rain, wind and snow, such paint does not fade in the sun, and most importantly, it protects the metal from corrosion.

High-quality, and, of course, expensive blacksmith's paints do not lose their brightness and freshness for years, delighting the eye with brilliance and juicy shades. A variety of colors inherent in blacksmith paints make it possible to enrich forged products, to make forged elements more expressive. But still, the main function characteristic of blacksmith paints is the protection of metal structures from corrosion.

What causes corrosion? As a rule, electrochemical processes that occur on the surface of a metal structure are to blame for this. And an indispensable participant in any such process is water. It can get on the metal during rain or condense from the air. In order for corrosion to fail to attack the forged product, this reaction must be stopped. And the simplest method is to isolate the surface of forged elements from contact with moisture by coating with a special compound.

There are two ways to paint metal structures - modern and classic.

Classic way

In this case, special primers are usually used, which can be divided into phosphating, passivating and designing. Phosphating primers form a special film on the surface of metal structures, consisting of iron phosphates. Passivating soil compositions lead metal surface into a passive state, oxidizing it. The composition of the protective primers includes zinc dust, which has a higher reducing ability. Thus, zinc acts as an anode, which protects the forged product, destroying itself. Insulating primer compositions create a dense coating on the surface of a metal structure that does not allow moisture to pass through.

All of these compositions have good adhesive properties. But their main drawback is that they have low wear resistance, which requires another appropriate composition to be applied on top. In addition, such primers are distinguished by low decorative properties.

The classic coloring method implies a certain order of operations:
- removal of traces of rust from the surface of the metal structure, as well as old paint;
- transformation of corrosion into a composition that will protect the surface of the metal structure;
- application of a primer;
- application of decorative and protective composition;
- surface protection with an additional special composition.

When choosing a primer composition, it should be remembered that there are primers only for interior work, for example, Grepp Grundfarg from BECKERS. But the primer Metallprimer from the same company is intended, on the contrary, only for outdoor work. But the vast majority of companies produce universal primers that can be used in any conditions. The most popular primers are from companies such as CAPAROL (Capacryl Haftprimer product), OIKOS (Novalis Aggrappante composition), TIKKURILA (Rostex Aqua composition).

Alkyd enamels, such as BECKERS ("Hammarlack Hammer Enamel"), MEFFERT (Hochglanzlack) CAPAROL (Capalac Seidenmatt-Buntlack and Capalac Hochglanz-Buntlack) , and etc.
IN Lately water-soluble acrylic enamels are very often used, for example, Novalis Smalto enamel from OIKOS is especially popular.

Modern way

Recently, more and more often, manufacturers offer to use universal compositions that perform several protective functions as protection for metal structures.

Rather than buying paint and primer separately, it is more convenient to purchase both of these compositions, as they say, "in one bottle." Such paints can be applied as a primer, and can be applied directly to rust. The service life of such products is at least 10 years. 2 in 1 compositions are offered by both domestic and foreign manufacturers, such as Metallgrund & täck from BECKERS. This alkyd paint you can cover forged railings, metal railings, forged canopies and other forged items.

special attention deserve special WS-Plast blacksmith paints, which are offered in a wide range by the German manufacturer WEIGEL + SCHMIDT LACKCHEMIE. Such compositions can cover any surface, including those that were previously painted. The coating in this case will serve at least 6 years. Average consumption - 120-130 g ha 1 sq. m.

WS-Plast paints are produced on the basis of adhesive synthetic materials, forming a high-quality decorative coating that is resistant to abrasion, exposure to sunlight, as well as to sudden changes in temperature.

WS-Plast paints are best applied to the surface of metal structures using electrostatic painting. The composition of WS-Plast Dickschicht M 4200 with zinc content provides decorative protection for several decades.

With the help of the WS-Patina composition, produced by the same company, a forged product can be artificially “aged”, giving it the effect of a copper, silver or gold coating.

The Belgian company ZingaMetall produces an unusual composition - Zinga, a one-component product that can be immediately applied to any metal surface. The peculiarity of this composition is that it contains electrolytic zinc powder, which forms on any forged product - whether it be a forged railing, a forged fence or forged gate with gate - special thin film. It provides both electrochemical and mechanical protection against rust, which affects all metal structures. The manufacturer guarantees that the service life of such a composition is from 10 to 50 years, depending on the thickness of the film.

In addition to “two in one” compositions, there are also “three in one” paints that combine the properties of a corrosion converter, a primer and decorative coating. The most well-known manufacturer of such compounds in Russia is the English company HAMMERITE. Paints of this company are distinguished by ease of application and quick drying - only an hour and a half. In order for the coating to serve for a long time, forged products must be coated with a layer of at least 100 microns thick. The service life of such a composition does not exceed five years.

If you plan to paint forged products in several layers, consider an important factor: after 8 hours, the coating begins to polymerize, and a new layer can be applied only at the end of this process, that is, after 2 weeks.

Similar compositions are also offered by other foreign manufacturers - SENTAPOL - Hammer Paint, MEFFERT - Correx product. NOVA paints, such as the two-component composition Novax, or anti-corrosion paints, have gained no less popularity. alkyd enamel"Novax", specially designed for forged products that are operated in an aggressive humid environment.

Nowadays decorative elements from metal occupy one of the leading places in the design of interiors and exteriors. And thanks to the use of forged elements, which are distinguished by their special beauty and originality, metal decorations in design projects become almost indispensable.

One of distinctive features forged metal products is their wear resistance and durability. But, despite this, like any metal products, forged items are subject to negative effects. atmospheric phenomena, and as a result, the appearance of rust. To prevent such situations, as well as to give them a more spectacular look and match the designer's creative idea, forged elements are covered with special decorative or protective compounds, simply put - color.

How to prepare forging for painting

Before proceeding with painting, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the forged product from rust. As a rule, this is done with an ordinary metal brush. More expensive but also more quality way cleaning products from rust is sandblasting.

After removing rust and removing dust and dirt from the product, a primer layer is applied, which further ensures high-quality application and retention of the coloring layer on the metal. When choosing a primer, you should pay attention to the fact that it would be intended specifically for metal surfaces.

Painting options

Painting of metal forged products is conditionally divided into four main varieties:

  • Normal (budget) painting;
  • Textured (forge) painting;
  • Powder coating;
  • Electrostatic painting.

Consider the features of each type of painting in more detail.

Regular paint. As a rule, ordinary oil or nitro paint is used to paint forged products. Apply to the product with a brush or sprayer. Differs low, in comparison with others, the price. It has minimal anti-corrosion properties. When used outside buildings, it requires coating with a special anti-corrosion compound to protect the product from rust.

Textured (forge) painting. Textured paint differs from the usual one in its increased anti-corrosion properties, however, for outdoor use it also requires the application of an anti-corrosion coating. Tests show that some species texture paints protect metal from corrosion for 6-7 years, after which the coating must be renewed. The main advantage of textured paints over conventional paints is their decorative properties.

Textured paints give products a rich, refined color and a unique shade. For the most part, they are used for painting forged elements indoors.

Electrostatic painting. The most durable reliable appearance painting forged products, but at the same time the most expensive. Accordingly, really expensive, unique products are subjected to electrostatic painting. It has excellent anti-corrosion properties. Applied at the factory. Not applicable in everyday life.

Powder paints for forged items

The advantages of powder coatings over others are undeniable, they are environmental friendliness, economy and durability. Technology powder coating significantly different from other methods. The name of the paint speaks for itself: painting is done by applying powder on a special resin base to the metal. Advantages of powder paints:

  • Wide range of colors and shades;
  • High strength and wear resistance;
  • The content of only environmentally friendly components;
  • Low percentage of material waste during painting;
  • No need for special preparation of painted surfaces;
  • High anticorrosive qualities.

Like any material, powder coatings have a number of disadvantages:

  1. The impossibility of "repainting", which allows them to be used only on finished, solid products;
  2. Limitation of application to non-standard forms;
  3. Difficulty in application at home.

As a rule, powder coatings are applied to finished goods, for example forged furniture, in the factory

Painting grills and fireplace grates

Special attention should be paid to the issue of painting products exposed to high temperatures. Such products include barbecues, etc. For such purposes, special heat-resistant paints are used that can withstand a temperature range of 600-8000C. These paints are environmentally friendly pure composition, which prevents the release harmful substances under the influence of high temperatures. These paints include organosilicon enamels and special heat-resistant powder paints. In the factory, the oxidation method, or bluing, is used.

Painting forged gates: step-by-step instructions There are many methods for manufacturing forged fences: cold and hot varieties of forging, welding and many other methods. The choice of one or another method allows you to achieve a certain color effect. But, in addition to the nuances and subtleties of blacksmithing, a good aesthetic and anti-corrosion effect can be achieved using blacksmith paint. The best option for painting gates in a temperate climate is paint made in Germany. The metal from which various forged products are made can be mistaken for different materials. A wide range of colors allows you to achieve a similar effect. Which shade to choose for painting is the choice of the owner. The gate can be sustained in one color scheme with the house and buildings of the site, or they can contrast with them. Usage special paint for forged products allows you to change both the color of the gate and their shade. Blacksmith paints can be mixed with each other, getting the most daring shades for painting surfaces. How to protect forged products from corrosion? Painting the gate with blacksmith paint will help protect the forged beauty from corrosion. Before you paint the gate, you need to perform work to prepare the surfaces for painting. Algorithm for performing work on anti-corrosion protection of forged gates. Rust cleaning. Primer for surfaces to be painted. Application of special blacksmith paint to the gate, followed by protection of the painted surface with special substances. The main thing is to clean the metal from rust. Under no circumstances should you paint over rust! Our task is not to disguise rust, but to get rid of it. Here are a few ways: Sandblasting. The acquisition of a sandblaster is very important if you become the owner of a wrought iron gate. Experience shows that if the painting of the gate is done once a year or two years, renting a sandblaster can result in a fairly significant amount. In general, the final choice is yours. Cleaning with a stiff wire brush. Application of sandpaper. Pretty too effective method, but keep in mind that the toughest types of rust should be used to clean the gate from rust. What primer to choose? A primer is needed in order to protect Forged gates against corrosion and so that the paint layer lays evenly and better. Substances are added to some types of primers that convert chemical composition rust. Types of coverings for gates Component others - inhibitors (substances that slow down the process of metal oxidation). According to the manufacturers, the use of such primers allows at least doubling the life of paints applied over the primer. Painting technologies So, it was found out: surface painting is carried out after preliminary priming. Many experts recommend the use of primer and paint in pairs. Experience shows that if you paint metal product hammer paint, the effect will be really amazing. Varieties of colorful coatings for gates However, it should be noted that the name "hammer paint" is not entirely correct. Rather, the effect of its use can be called hammer-like. Dyes are also known as acrylic (alkyd-acrylic). You can paint wrought iron gates in the following ways. Painting with a brush. The best option- rounded brush with a stiff brush. The process is simple, but requires a certain accuracy. If you do not take a very responsible approach to work, the result, to put it mildly, will not live up to expectations. Aerosol painting - special dyes are used in spray cans. Powder coating. It is recommended to use when welding was not used during installation. Staining by electrostatic method. Perhaps the most durable and reliable type of painting. Flaw - high price because you have to use special equipment. Patination - applying a small amount of patina to give the metal the effect of antiquity. It is applied to the surface with very small strokes (this creates a worn effect). The main advantages of painting with hammer paint: Painting with hammer paint does not require too scrupulous surface preparation. Cleaning of dust and rust is enough. Painting gates with hammer paint is a combination of three-in-one work: priming, painting and applying a protective anti-corrosion coating for metal at the same time. If you paint the surface correctly, you can not think about its frequent repairs. Very good appearance. As you know, metal paints have three effects: matte, glossy and hammer effect (hammer effect, due to aesthetics and a characteristic pattern, is the most common). When using dyes with a matte and glossy effect, such a pattern does not happen. Among the ingredients that make up the hammer paint are silicone additives, substances that cause the chemical transformation of rust, paint enamel, the smallest particles of glass, aluminum powder. With silicone filler and particles tempered glass creates protection against harmful effects water. Aluminum powder creates an opportunity for better adhesion of the paint to the painted surface. The hammer paint option is therefore ideal for painting wrought iron gates. How to choose blacksmith paint? Consider some types of hammer effect paint from different manufacturers. "Hammerite" - English paint for metal. Considered one of the best. First of all, she is a pleasure to work with. Perhaps this the best option for applying paint with a brush. Secondly, in terms of the aesthetics of the result obtained, this paint is unrivaled. It is distinguished by the noble effect of old metal. The painted forged product looks like it was made in a blacksmith shop. Applying a small amount of patina to the surface will enhance the effect of noble aging of the metal. Paint "Polymetal" from the company "Polisan" (Turkey). Cheaper than the Hammerite, but the quality is pretty good. The undoubted advantage is a rich color scheme. Flaw: limited opportunities application (preferably with a spray gun). Do you want to paint with a brush? You can try, but beware: for real good result can only be achieved by a professional. "Tambour" (Israel). A qualitative analogue of the Turkish paint "Polymetal": advantages, disadvantages and even brands different colors- the same. Senta paint from Sentapol (Turkey). Poller is an excellent paint, much cheaper than imported analogues. Color quality is good. The only drawback of this paint is the absence of the “three in one” effect: the surface requires priming before painting. The procedure for painting There is such an algorithm for applying hammer paint: Cleaning the surface from rust (when re-painting - from the remnants of the old paint), removing dust and dirt. The surface should be degreased with acetone. Applying a primer. Hammer paint is thoroughly mixed. After the primer-enamel has dried, you can paint the gate with a brush or spray gun. If the enamel thickens during work, you need to dilute it with a solvent. Is the first coat of paint dry? Now the second layer is applied (thicker than the first). The paint dries completely in a day, and a characteristic, very beautiful pattern appears.
