The best paint for forged products. Painting wrought iron gates: step by step instructions. Specialty paints and nitro-based paints

Painting of forged products

Artistic forging surrounds us everywhere. But, despite all their advantages, forged products have their drawbacks. The main problem with forging is corrosion. The cause of corrosion damage is usually the processes occurring on the surface of the metal. Irreparable damage is caused to metal structures, as a result of which there is a deterioration in appearance, a decrease in strength up to the complete destruction of the product. For protection, special paints are used, designed to preserve appearance and structure of artistic forging.

How to paint forged products

The paint itself does not protect against corrosion. The protective functions we need are primers applied immediately before painting. Primer compositions have good water-repellent characteristics and are firmly held on the metal surface. Their disadvantage is poor resistance to atmospheric and impact factors, as well as primers do not have the necessary aesthetic appearance. To extend the life of the protective coating and give the desired appearance finished product, on top of the primer, the metal is painted with special paints.

The whole process takes place in several stages:

- carefully remove rust from the surface of the product;

Degrease the surface of the product;

- apply a layer of primer on the surface of the product and allow it to dry;

- paint products with special paint.

Of course, there are no primers and paints that can protect the metal forever, and sooner or later the procedure will have to be repeated. Therefore, when carrying out painting work, it is necessary to choose the right type of primer and paint, paying special attention to the service life.

Composition of primers

The tasks of the primer are to prevent the process of corrosion, to exclude contact of the metal surface with moisture and to ensure the adhesion of the primer to the metal and the decorative coating. To achieve these goals, special corrosion inhibitors, inhibitors, are included in the composition of the primers. IN Lately soils with targeted additives appeared on the market. Manufacturers do not disclose their formula, but they assure that the service life is almost doubled and the possibility of applying such primers to rust up to 100 microns thick.

Types of paints

The most common paints for forged products are compositions on acrylic base. They must be used with special soils. Depending on the composition and manufacturer, the service life can be from 6 to 8 years. Typically, manufacturers recommend using the same brand of paint and primer.

Recently, three-in-one paint types have become popular. Such paint simultaneously contains a rust converter, a primer and a decorative coating. The use of such paints significantly saves the time required for the gradual application of all layers. Such paint can be applied directly to rust, and the surface cleaning process is reduced to removing a loose layer of rust.

Quick-drying paints allow the usually long process of painting artistic forging products to be carried out within 60-90 minutes. Minimum Thickness such a coating - 100 microns. Typically, such compositions serve from 5 years, subject to the application technology. Such products have one feature: within a few hours after painting, the polymerization of the coating begins, and you can apply a second layer only after it is completed. Sometimes this process can take up to two weeks, so carefully study the method of applying the chosen paint.

Thanks to coloring, you will not only keep your products intact, but will also be able to give them the necessary aesthetic appearance. The variety of offered types of paint will allow you to choose the desired color and shade, so that forged products will easily fit into any interior.

Metal structures are found everywhere. IN country house these are metal fences, forged railings, forged railings and forged peaks. In a city apartment, we install wrought iron bars on windows, wrought iron elements on a balcony or loggia. Is it possible to paint forged products? Many people are sure that it is impossible and consider this the main drawback of such metal structures. But this statement is fundamentally wrong. Forged products can and should be painted in order to avoid rust in the first place.

Rust causes huge, sometimes irreparable damage to metal structures, forged products. Corrosion not only worsens the appearance of products, it reduces their strength, and in some, especially advanced cases, it can completely destroy them. Protect metal constructions and forged products from the harmful effects of rust can only be special compositions.

Very often, in order to protect forged products from aggressive environmental influences, metal galvanizing is often used. This method is considered one of the most reliable methods protection of metal structures. Galvanizing is done by welding a zinc coating to the metal. Zinc melts and protects wrought iron railings, wrought iron gratings or wrought iron visors as long as its anodes are working.

But this method has one big disadvantage- lack of external attractiveness. Special forge paint can give the necessary decorative effect to the product, but it is possible to paint a forged product only six months after galvanizing.

Special blacksmith paints are made taking into account the features inherent in forged products. As a rule, blacksmith's paints have increased adhesion, moisture resistance, and resistance to any weather conditions. A forged product coated with such a composition is not afraid of rain, wind and snow, such paint does not fade in the sun, and most importantly, it protects the metal from corrosion.

High-quality, and, of course, expensive blacksmith's paints do not lose their brightness and freshness for years, delighting the eye with brilliance and juicy shades. A variety of colors inherent in blacksmith paints make it possible to enrich forged products, to make forged elements more expressive. But still, the main function characteristic of blacksmith paints is the protection of metal structures from corrosion.

What causes corrosion? As a rule, electrochemical processes that occur on the surface of a metal structure are to blame for this. And an indispensable participant in any such process is water. It can get on the metal during rain or condense from the air. In order for corrosion to fail to attack the forged product, this reaction must be stopped. And the simplest method is to isolate the surface of forged elements from contact with moisture by coating with a special compound.

There are two ways to paint metal structures - modern and classic.

Classic way

In this case, special primers are usually used, which can be divided into phosphating, passivating and designing. Phosphating primers form a special film on the surface of metal structures, consisting of iron phosphates. Passivating soil compositions bring the metal surface into a passive state, oxidizing it. The composition of the protective primers includes zinc dust, which has a higher reducing ability. Thus, zinc acts as an anode, which protects the forged product, destroying itself. Insulating primer compositions create a dense coating on the surface of a metal structure that does not allow moisture to pass through.

All of these compositions have good adhesive properties. But their main drawback is that they have low wear resistance, which requires another appropriate composition to be applied on top. In addition, such primers are distinguished by low decorative properties.

The classic coloring method implies a certain order of operations:
- removal of traces of rust from the surface of the metal structure, as well as old paint;
- transformation of corrosion into a composition that will protect the surface of the metal structure;
- application of a primer;
- application of decorative and protective composition;
- surface protection with an additional special composition.

When choosing a primer composition, it should be remembered that there are primers only for internal works, for example, Grepp Grundfarg from BECKERS. But the primer Metallprimer from the same company is intended, on the contrary, only for outdoor work. But the vast majority of companies produce universal primers that can be used in any conditions. The most popular primers are from companies such as CAPAROL (Capacryl Haftprimer product), OIKOS (Novalis Aggrappante composition), TIKKURILA (Rostex Aqua composition).

Alkyd enamels, such as BECKERS ("Hammarlack Hammer Enamel"), MEFFERT (Hochglanzlack) CAPAROL (Capalac Seidenmatt-Buntlack and Capalac Hochglanz-Buntlack) , and etc.
Recently, water-soluble acrylic enamels have been used very often, for example, Novalis Smalto enamel from OIKOS is especially popular.

Modern way

Recently, more and more often, manufacturers offer to use universal compositions that perform several protective functions as protection for metal structures.

Rather than buying paint and primer separately, it is more convenient to purchase both of these compositions, as they say, "in one bottle." Such paints can be applied as a primer, and can be applied directly to rust. The service life of such products is at least 10 years. 2 in 1 compositions are offered by both domestic and foreign manufacturers, such as Metallgrund & täck from BECKERS. This alkyd paint you can cover forged railings, metal railings, forged canopies and other forged items.

special attention deserve special WS-Plast blacksmith paints, which are offered in a wide range by the German manufacturer WEIGEL + SCHMIDT LACKCHEMIE. Such compositions can cover any surface, including those that were previously painted. The coating in this case will serve at least 6 years. Average consumption - 120-130 g ha 1 sq. m.

WS-Plast paints are produced on the basis of adhesive synthetic materials, forming a high-quality decorative coating that is resistant to abrasion, exposure to sunlight, as well as to sudden changes in temperature.

WS-Plast paints are best applied to the surface of metal structures using electrostatic painting. The composition of WS-Plast Dickschicht M 4200 with zinc content provides decorative protection for several decades.

With the help of the WS-Patina composition, produced by the same company, a forged product can be artificially “aged”, giving it the effect of a copper, silver or gold coating.

The Belgian company ZingaMetall produces an unusual composition - Zinga, a one-component product that can be immediately applied to any metal surface. The peculiarity of this composition is that it contains electrolytic zinc powder, which forms on any forged product - whether it be a forged railing, a forged fence or forged gate with gate - special thin film. It provides both electrochemical and mechanical protection against rust, which affects all metal structures. The manufacturer guarantees that the service life of such a composition is from 10 to 50 years, depending on the thickness of the film.

In addition to “two in one” compositions, there are also “three in one” paints that combine the properties of a corrosion converter, a primer and decorative coating. The most well-known manufacturer of such compounds in Russia is the English company HAMMERITE. Paints of this company are distinguished by ease of application and quick drying - only an hour and a half. In order for the coating to serve for a long time, forged products must be coated with a layer of at least 100 microns thick. The service life of such a composition does not exceed five years.

If you plan to paint forged products in several layers, consider an important factor: after 8 hours, the coating begins to polymerize, and a new layer can be applied only at the end of this process, that is, after 2 weeks.

Similar compositions are also offered by other foreign manufacturers - SENTAPOL - Hammer Paint, MEFFERT - Correx product. NOVA paints, such as the two-component composition Novax, or anti-corrosion paints, have gained no less popularity. alkyd enamel"Novax", specially designed for forged products that are operated in an aggressive humid environment.

Iron is susceptible to corrosion, so regular painting of garage doors is essential. How to properly prepare the surface of the gate, and what resistant paint to choose? There are folk tricks that will help reduce costs and labor costs, as well as speed up the process of bringing the garage door in order.

If the gate is new, then special preparation is not necessary, it is enough to clean the surface of dust and coat it with a primer that protects the metal from corrosion and provides better adhesion of the paint to the metal.

How to paint garage doors if they are old and rusty?

Surface cleaning

There are several options for cleaning metal, the choice of method depends on the condition of the metal. If the metal is rusted to holes, then only replacing the gate will help, not painting. We offer a choice of methods for preparing old metal for applying a primer and paint.

Inexpensive and efficient

Budget, but tedious method. You will need the following tools:

  • spray bottle for water
  • metal and regular hard brushes;
  • skin (number 60 or 80, depending on the layer of rust);
  • "Kalosha" gasoline - should be used as a solvent for the remnants of old paint, it is better than white spirit;
  • rag.

The cleaning process can take a whole day, but the costs are minimal. The sequence of actions is as follows:

  • thoroughly wash the gate and clean the dust and dirt with a stiff brush;
  • after washing, the metal must dry completely;
  • old paint that peels off, we clean it with a metal brush;
  • all the irregularities of the layers of the old coating that remain should be cleaned with sandpaper;
  • after stripping, it is necessary to degrease the metal with gasoline.

Do not forget that it is necessary to clean from rust not only the gate, but also the fasteners, and the welded frame, which is built into the walls. Often rust from cold bridges spreads rapidly from metal elements embedded in the walls on the entire surface of the gate.

Mechanized cleaning of metal from rust

Before you paint the garage door, you can clean the metal more the easy way- use simple tools:

  • a screwdriver and a brush attachment perfectly clean off dirt and paint residues, but the battery will be set to zero very quickly, and it will be problematic to use the tool again;
  • orbital Sander- a good alternative to a brush and sandpaper and is relatively inexpensive (up to 2000 rubles);
  • Bulgarian ( low power) with a metal brush head. A soft version of the nozzle for the grinder, for old metal and paint - brass brush nozzles, for heavy surface contamination - brushes with interlaced threads.

Important. When working with a grinder, sparks and a strong emission of the smallest particles of paint are possible, therefore we work only in a mask and thick gloves.

The most expensive but reliable option for cleaning paint is sandblasting. To do this, you have to remove the gate. After sandblasting in specialized workshops, they offer a layer of paint in a special bath. The guarantee of strength and durability of such an update is 6 years, even under the most difficult weather conditions.

Chemical cleaning

The option is controversial, since after applying the solvent to the old paint and rust, the surfaces should still be cleaned of the old softened coating. Many users complain that after applying a rust remover and painting garage doors, they peeled off after three months.

Not surprising. Softening old layer coatings, they applied a new one. Therefore, after a while, two layers flew around together, because adhesion could not be achieved at all.

The best option for loosening rust and how to paint a garage door is Hammerite metal paint, there are also cheaper domestic counterparts. But, before applying, all the same, the peeling remnants of the old coating must be cleaned and degreased.

If the gate is new, still covered with grease, then you must first remove the layer of grease with white spirit, then rinse with acetone. It is not difficult to check the quality of degreasing - we apply a sheet of thin paper to the surface - if not greasy spot, then you can paint.

Rust neutralizer

Advice. Be sure to clean all the glossy and smooth details of the gate by grinding so that the surface becomes rough, then the adhesion of the paint to the metal will be more reliable and stronger.

Rules for painting and applying a chemical remover of old paint and rust, to the final coat:

  • We apply a reagent on the mechanically brushed surface of the gate. Washes in the form of a gel are better and more effective, as they have a higher covering power;
  • cover the surface with polyethylene - this will speed up the process of dissolving the paint;
  • we expect about half an hour (you need to follow the instructions, which indicate the exposure time of the wash);
  • with a spatula, remove the swollen softened old coating;
  • sometimes it is necessary to use the wash again;
  • before painting the cleaned Garage Doors you need to degrease the metal with kerosene and apply a layer of primer against rust.

Delete powder paint from a metal surface is easier. In this case, special detergents based on surfactants and mineral reagents.

The surface is cleaned, now you should choose the right material for painting.

Choice of paint and primer for garage doors

Pigments that affect rust.

Garage door paint must meet certain requirements:

  • good covering ability of paint;
  • enhanced adhesion on a metal surface;
  • should not contain components that oxidize the metal;
  • needed high stability to the action of moisture and good water-repellent characteristics;
  • the elasticity index must correspond to paints for metal so that it does not crack at high temperatures;
  • thermal range of use for painting - frost resistance and heat resistance;
  • resistance to aggressive chemicals - gasoline, solvents and technical oils;
  • high resistance to impacts and mechanical wear.

Which garage door paint ideally matches the above characteristics:

  • organosilicon enamel - high strength and elasticity of the paint, with excellent resistance to moisture and long service life. The adhesion to metal of these garage door paints is excellent, the covering power is uniform. All silicone enamels have anti-corrosion properties.

Advice. This paint can be used to paint garage doors that are constantly exposed to direct sunlight, especially in the southern regions of the country. The coating withstands temperatures up to 600 degrees without changing color and durability.

  • alkyd enamel - high elasticity and durability, suitable for interior and exterior finish, big choice colors. Alkyd-urethane enamel - reliable a budget option paints for any garage doors;
  • hammer paint - resistant to corrosion, you can not clean the surface to the ideal, no need to primer, excellent dirt-repellent effect. It is better to apply from a spray gun under pressure;
  • acrylic enamel is an ideal, easy-to-use solution. The best paint for today, can be used for any garage door. It has all the necessary characteristics - withstands a sharp temperature drop, is not afraid of moisture and aggressive substances, is resistant to any atmospheric phenomena and high temperatures. The color palette, although small, is rich and deep. The only negative is the high price.

Important. When choosing what paint to cover the gate with, give up oil paints, they will crack very quickly.

For a metal surface, craftsmen advise using fire-retardant coatings "Polysteel" and electrically conductive dyes from ZINGA. These are special paints designed for car workshops and other special garage operating conditions.

Brands of popular domestic and imported paints for metal

  • primer-enamel "SPETSNAZ XV-0278" Yaroslavl paints, on rusty surfaces;
  • hammer Hammerite, dark brown color, should dry and polymerize for three weeks, then I cover the second layer;
  • Alpina Direkt auf Rost can be applied over rust. Must be fully cured to coat a second time. Color - white, black and silver;
  • you can choose Kuzbass-lacquer for metal surfaces, one layer is enough;
  • the entire line of materials for metal "Smile" - beautiful view and resistance to high humidity;
  • "Dufa" hammer, for metal, can be applied with a brush, the view is excellent, but it must dry for two days to paint again.

When choosing a paint, a lot depends on the condition of the gate and, of course, financial capabilities. Some simply dilute the silver powder and coat it on the most inexpensive primer, but it looks like a very expensive elite coating.

Primer

We offer several interesting proven options for a primer that must be applied before painting a garage door:

  • ship minium is a reliable and inexpensive solution;
  • silver - it is used when priming a car body before. Gives a metallic and pearly tint to any paint. It is cheaper and better to choose a simple option - buy aluminum powder separately and dilute it with drying oil. Coating - in one thin layer;
  • phosphating primer VL-02;
  • use minium metal;
  • primer for metal GF-021.

We prime only on previously cleaned and degreased dry metal surfaces.

Color selection

The color of the gate depends only on the preferences of the owner of the garage, what paint to cover. But, it must be taken into account that dark colors attract heat from the sun, and light - reflect. The most popular colors are dark green, brick, light blue and burgundy.

Sequence of work

Garage door painting – necessary tools:

  • spray gun - the most convenient option, allows you to apply the coating in an even layer, without streaks, reduces paint consumption;
  • roller - leaves stripes that need to be rolled several times;
  • tassel - worst decision for applying paint, there will always be streaks and streaks. Consumption is doubled;
  • respirator and gloves.

How to paint the gate in the garage - we act in sequence:

  • all surfaces that should not get paint are glued masking tape, regular tape is also suitable;
  • all paint and primer applications start from the top, moving down. This will eliminate streaks and sagging;
  • so that the transitions are not visible, overlap one parallel layer with another. This will ensure uniformity of color, without sharp color transitions and shades;
  • now you need to wait until the coating layer is completely dry and carefully inspect the surface. There are always areas that are missed, we paint them again;
  • all hard-to-reach places- we paint hinges, grooves, latches with a thin contour brush so that there are no pieces of open metal left. Such surfaces provoke the rapid spread of rust;
  • any paint dries for a day;
  • The second layer is applied only after the first has completely dried, not before. Otherwise, the coating will quickly bubble and crack.

Advice. Do not apply more coats of paint than required, as excess weight coating reduces durability and strength. Two layers is enough.

Temperature regime

It doesn't matter how you paint your garage door, but the temperature and weather in which you will work is very important. Best temperature regime from ten to twenty degrees Celsius in calm weather.

It is desirable that at the time of work there was no direct sunlight, which heats the metal very quickly. If you do not pay attention to the temperature, then there may be unpleasant results:

  • rapid swelling of the coating, since adhesion decreases on heated metal;
  • the color will be uneven and dull;
  • there will definitely be streaks and streaks.

Ideal time - overcast weather and temperature +12 - +15 degrees.

By choosing the right coating option and following the entire sequence of work, it is quite possible to inexpensively and beautifully paint the garage door yourself. The main rule is that you cannot paint on an old peeling coating and on rust, it is contraindicated to use oil-based paints. Priming is a must.

Painting forged gate: step-by-step instruction There are many methods for making forged fences: cold and hot varieties of forging, welding and many other methods. The choice of one or another method allows you to achieve a certain color effect. But, in addition to the nuances and subtleties of blacksmithing, a good aesthetic and anti-corrosion effect can be achieved using blacksmith paint. The best option for painting gates in a temperate climate is paint made in Germany. The metal from which various forged products are made can be mistaken for different materials. A wide range of colors allows you to achieve a similar effect. Which shade to choose for painting is the choice of the owner. The gate can be sustained in one color scheme with the house and buildings of the site, or they can contrast with them. The use of special paint for forged products allows you to change both the color of the gate and its shade. Blacksmith paints can be mixed with each other, getting the most daring shades for painting surfaces. How to protect forged products from corrosion? Painting the gate with blacksmith paint will help protect the forged beauty from corrosion. Before you paint the gate, you need to perform work to prepare the surfaces for painting. Algorithm for performing work on anti-corrosion protection of forged gates. Rust cleaning. Primer for surfaces to be painted. Application of special blacksmith paint to the gate, followed by protection of the painted surface with special substances. The main thing is to clean the metal from rust. Under no circumstances should you paint over rust! Our task is not to disguise rust, but to get rid of it. Here are a few ways: Sandblasting. The acquisition of a sandblaster is very important if you become the owner of a wrought iron gate. Experience shows that if the painting of the gate is done once a year or two years, renting a sandblaster can result in a fairly significant amount. In general, the final choice is yours. Cleaning with a stiff wire brush. Application of sandpaper. Pretty too effective method, but keep in mind that the toughest types of rust should be used to clean the gate from rust. What primer to choose? The primer is needed in order to protect the wrought iron gate from corrosion and so that the paint layer lays down evenly and better. Substances are added to some types of primers that convert chemical composition rust. Types of coverings for gates Component others - inhibitors (substances that slow down the process of metal oxidation). According to the manufacturers, the use of such primers allows at least doubling the life of paints applied over the primer. Painting technologies So, it was found out: surface painting is carried out after preliminary priming. Many experts recommend the use of primer and paint in pairs. Experience shows that if you paint metal product hammer paint, the effect will be really amazing. Varieties of colorful coatings for gates However, it should be noted that the name "hammer paint" is not entirely correct. Rather, the effect of its use can be called hammer-like. Dyes are also known as acrylic (alkyd-acrylic). You can paint wrought iron gates in the following ways. Painting with a brush. The best option- rounded brush with a stiff brush. The process is simple, but requires a certain accuracy. If you do not take a very responsible approach to work, the result, to put it mildly, will not live up to expectations. Aerosol painting - special dyes are used in spray cans. Powder coating. It is recommended to use when welding was not used during installation. Staining by electrostatic method. Perhaps the most durable and reliable appearance painting. Flaw - high price because you have to use special equipment. Patination - applying a small amount of patina to give the metal the effect of antiquity. It is applied to the surface with very small strokes (this creates a worn effect). The main advantages of painting with hammer paint: Painting with hammer paint does not require too scrupulous surface preparation. Cleaning of dust and rust is enough. Painting gates with hammer paint is a combination of three-in-one work: priming, painting and applying a protective anti-corrosion coating for metal at the same time. If you paint the surface correctly, you can not think about its frequent repairs. Very good appearance. As you know, metal paints have three effects: matte, glossy and hammer effect (hammer effect, due to aesthetics and a characteristic pattern, is the most common). When using dyes with a matte and glossy effect, such a pattern does not happen. Among the ingredients that make up the hammer paint are silicone additives, substances that cause the chemical transformation of rust, paint enamel, the smallest particles of glass, aluminum powder. With silicone filler and particles tempered glass creates protection against harmful effects water. Aluminum powder creates an opportunity for better adhesion of the paint to the painted surface. The hammer paint option is therefore ideal for painting wrought iron gates. How to choose blacksmith paint? Consider some types of hammer effect paint from different manufacturers. "Hammerite" - English paint for metal. Considered one of the best. First of all, she is a pleasure to work with. Perhaps this the best option for applying paint with a brush. Secondly, in terms of the aesthetics of the result obtained, this paint is unrivaled. It is distinguished by the noble effect of old metal. The painted forged product looks like it was made in a blacksmith shop. Applying a small amount of patina to the surface will enhance the effect of noble aging of the metal. Paint "Polymetal" from the company "Polisan" (Turkey). Cheaper than the Hammerite, but the quality is pretty good. The undoubted advantage is a rich color scheme. Flaw: limited opportunities application (preferably with a spray gun). Do you want to paint with a brush? You can try, but beware: for real good result can only be achieved by a professional. "Tambour" (Israel). A qualitative analogue of the Turkish paint "Polymetal": advantages, disadvantages and even brands various colors- the same. Senta paint from Sentapol (Turkey). Poller is an excellent paint, much cheaper than imported analogues. Color quality is good. The only drawback of this paint is the absence of the “three in one” effect: the surface requires priming before painting. The procedure for painting There is such an algorithm for applying hammer paint: Cleaning the surface from rust (when re-painting - from the remnants of the old paint), removing dust and dirt. The surface should be degreased with acetone. Applying a primer. Hammer paint is thoroughly mixed. After the primer-enamel has dried, you can paint the gate with a brush or spray gun. If the enamel thickens during work, you need to dilute it with a solvent. Is the first coat of paint dry? Now the second layer is applied (thicker than the first). The paint dries completely in a day, and a characteristic, very beautiful pattern appears.

Metal forging has always been considered a heavy and revered art. It is art, since it is one thing to simply weld two pieces of iron to each other, and it is quite another to make something beautiful and pleasing to the eye out of this.

But to create a real masterpiece, the skill of one blacksmith is not enough, the finished product still needs to be painted, and we will talk about how and with what it is better to do this in this article.

Someone may say that the coloring of a forged product is no different from painting, for example, wooden tabletop, but this is far from the case. Firstly, these are of course special paints, which will be discussed below. And secondly, the method of painting, especially if there is a need to perform Painting works with their own hands, but there are no skills in this matter.

Interestingly, with the wrong approach, even the most expensive and high-quality paint will be powerless to protect the product from corrosion.

If we talk about the methods of painting, then they can be very diverse:

  • Brush.
  • Spray gun (see).
  • Tampon.
  • Dipping.

Important! When working with an airbrush, it should be remembered that the thicker the consistency of the paint, the harder it is for it to spray and the more pressure must be set on the compressor.

But you should always remember about difficult places, which on forged products always in abundance. For example, these can be places of welding, the fact is that during the forging process, the metal is exposed to strong heat and weakens by itself, and welding burns even more protective film, which is always formed on the surface.

It is in the places of welding that corrosion begins in the first place, and from there it diverges throughout the product. One more important nuance, which should be remembered is the cleaning of the product, no, not from possible rust, since three-in-one paint for forged products can safely cope with it, but to clean it from scale and metal delamination.

Cleaned and ready for painting

The fact is that at the moment of calcination, inhomogeneous parts of the metal begin to peel off, upon a cursory examination, this may not be noticed, but it is enough to brush the finished product with a metal brush, as particles resembling scales immediately begin to fall off.

Cleaning with a metal brush is also necessary if the product has already been painted, and now you just need to renew the coating. Paint for metal has a very high adhesion to the surface to be painted, but it can peel off the old coating.

Forging paints

A game of color contrast, looks perfect on wrought iron gates

If the question of how to paint forged products yourself is more or less clear, then what paints to use, this question is much more complicated and extensive. If you do not pay due attention to it, then you will have to repaint the product annually, especially if it is located on the street.

Today, there are a lot of paints specialized on metal (see), and each of them has its own unique set of qualities, and such a variety only confuses an inexperienced person even more. We will not dwell on the entire range presented in modern hardware stores.

And let's talk only about the most popular and, as a result, high-quality materials designed specifically for metal surfaces, taking into account the fact that the product will be used outdoors and constantly exposed to negative effects.

hammer paint

Hammer paint, or hammer effect paint (see) is so named for the similarity of the coating to the ruts from hammer blows to metal. The embossed surface of the paint perfectly hides all the small flaws and flaws that inevitably happen on a forged product, especially if we are talking about a real one. hand forged, and not about stamping on machines. Instructions for applying hammer paint involves working with any convenient tool.

It can be:

  • Airbrush.
  • roller.
  • Brush.
  • Tampon.

It all depends on personal skills and preferences, the quality of the coating will not suffer from this at all.

Important! Hammer paint, very thick, and even the working consistency of the material may not succumb to a simple electric spray gun. Therefore, if it is not possible to use a compressor, pneumatic tool, then it is better to use simpler and more affordable methods.

Pros:

  • High degree of adhesion to metal.
  • Three-component paint does not require an additional layer of primer.
  • The polymer coating is completely resistant to water and sunlight.
  • Durability. A product covered with hammer paint does not need to be updated for many years.
  • Large selection of colors.
  • High resistance to mechanical damage. The hammer coating is very difficult to damage, even with heavy or sharp objects.

Unfortunately, even this material has several disadvantages that must be considered when choosing hammer paint as a coating.

Minuses:

  • The relatively high price, which, however, is more than offset by the durability of the paint.
  • Large consumption of paint square meter, especially when working with a spray gun.
  • If it is necessary to repaint, hammer enamel is very difficult to remove, and another coating does not lie on top of it.
  • Hammer paint is presented in a very wide range of colors, but despite this, if the required shade is not selected, there is no way to use color paste.

As you can see, the minuses of hammer paint are less significant and are fully offset by the pluses, but they exist, and this imposes a number of restrictions on the use of this material.

blacksmith paint

Painting forged products with blacksmith enamels is considered the most durable and high-quality. To date, paint of this quality is produced by only a few European companies, and, accordingly, the cost of this material is simply sky-high.

But considering that the manufacturer himself gives a minimum warranty period for its products of 25 years, the price becomes much more attractive. The peculiarity of this paint is that it consists of stable polymers, and outwardly it may resemble ordinary bitumen, but this is not so, forge enamels are not only much more stable than mastic, but also have a shine characteristic only of oil dyes.

One more interesting feature blacksmith's paint is that it dries very quickly and even at low temperatures. This makes it possible to paint the product right on the street and not be afraid that the coating will spoil the rain or unexpected frosts.

Even a well that is in constant contact with water can be painted with blacksmith's enamels.

If we talk about the minuses, then in addition to the high price, we can single out the need for a mandatory preliminary layer of soil, which must necessarily be of the same brand as the paint itself. Otherwise, the manufacturer automatically disclaims all warranty obligations regarding the durability of the coating.

Interesting! If financial opportunities are limited, then you can simply use the forging soil, and apply on top of it regular paint PF. In this case, all the characteristics of enamel increase several times, although the result of 25 years is unlikely to be achieved.

And in order to clearly understand how to work with blacksmith paints with your own hands, you can watch a video that clearly shows all the stages.

Paints ML

Paints ML for painting cars

Enamels under this brand are attempts by domestic manufacturers to create a kind of hammer enamel. Unfortunately, their quality is much inferior to foreign analogues, but their cost is much lower.

Outwardly, this paint resembles ordinary PF, but unlike it, it has higher technical specifications including durability and resistance to mechanical damage.
