The melamine chipboard edge is glued at home. The process itself does not take much time and is not too "garbage", unlike sawing and grinding. Waste will be only cut off residues, which at the end can be easily swept away with a broom.

Plastic edge on chipboard: PVC and ABS

The main disadvantage of conventional melamine edging is its fragility. It shows itself well in operation on the inner ends of furniture that are not subject to constant wear. On the visible ends (countertops, facades, open shelves) it wears out, chips off, takes on an unpresentable appearance. Another thing is a plastic edge for chipboard.

The most common two types: PVC edging (PVC) and ABS (ABS). Outwardly, they are practically indistinguishable, they are analogues, the differences are only in properties and composition. Both types are available in different widths and thicknesses of 0.4 mm, 1 mm and 2 mm, with and without adhesive. On the inner boxes of furniture, an edge of 0.4 mm thickness or a “one” is “allowed”, on countertops and facades - a “two”.

PVC furniture edge is made on the basis of polyvinyl chloride, and ABS - on the basis of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. ABS edging is considered environmentally friendly because it does not contain chlorine and heavy metals, and does not emit their harmful compounds when burned. Also, ABS as a material does not electrify, does not attract small debris and dust, gives less heat shrinkage when gluing and looks more accurate (without punching) at the ends (if we are talking about a thickness of 0.4-1 mm). But it also costs more than PVC.

If you are interested in the process of how to stick an edge on chipboard, then it is much more complicated, it requires additional skills and specialized equipment. In the conditions of furniture production, plastic is sheared on special edge banding machines, using high-temperature hot melt adhesives. There are manual edge banding machines for small industries.

At home PVC conditions it is possible to glue the edge on the chipboard, but it will take more time. Step by step:

  • It is important to carefully prepare the end of the furniture piece for gluing, especially if a thick edge is used, 1-2 mm thick. When the PVC or ABS edge is bonded to the base, the glue can “pull out” the chips and the end will take on an untidy bumpy look.
  • If the PVC edge has an adhesive base, then it is heated with a building hair dryer until the glue is melted. If not, they coat the end of the part with Moment glue, wait a bit for drying for better adhesion.
  • Then they press the PVC (ABS) edging to the end (manually or roll it several times with a roller) and wait for the adhesive base to harden.
  • Next, you need to carefully cut off the excess edges of the edge and grind, give a uniformly rounded shape along the entire length of the part. Usually, a milling cutter is used for these purposes. With a certain skill, you can do hand tool- knife, file and sanding paper.

Decorative plastic edges: super glossy, metallic and 3D effect

Both PVC and ABS edging come in attractive glossy and metallic finishes that not only make furniture more practical and durable, but also enhance it aesthetically.

If you decide to choose just this type of edging for tabletops and furniture facades with your own hands, then it is better to entrust the decision on how to stick a PVC edge on chipboard to a workshop that has the appropriate equipment. When sticking a glossy or metallized edge, the risks of accidentally scratching the end surface are too great and thereby ruining the whole effect. On the other hand, the decorative edging has a film-like protective layer, which can only be removed after the entire process of gluing, rolling and processing is completed.

Acrylic 3D edge (PMMA), made on the basis of polymethyl methacrylate, deserves special attention. The decorative base is covered with a thick layer of transparent polymer, which protects the base from damage and abrasion. It also gives the edging an attractive 3D effect of some solidity, in which the edging does not look like a simple framing of the tabletop.

Overhead and mortise edges

This type of edging is more decorative. It does not protect furniture parts from swelling and drying out, but only gives an attractive volumetric shape to the ends. It is used only for the design of visible ends - facades, cornices, countertops, open shelves etc.

As the name implies, the overlay (U-shaped) and mortise edge do not require a sticker (in rare cases, only additional fixation, support), it is attached by protruding parts, clasping the end of the part or cutting into a specially prepared recess in the center of the end. They make flexible overhead and mortise PVC edges, used to design tabletops in office and student furniture.

Stick the U-profile on chipboard end somewhat easier. We have discussed this method before. Such an edge is much stronger than melamine, bends quite easily and reliably protects against damage.

The presence of micro-gaps between the edge of the U-profile and the front surface of the chipboard does not allow gluing it in the kitchen or in the bathroom, therefore, edging with this material is mainly used for office furniture.

Edging chipboard, of course, is best done in the factory. In production, you can order a tape from any materials, including plastic, PVC and other modern composite materials. Edging on the machine will ensure perfect evenness and accuracy of application decorative cladding, but requires certain costs. If the main task is to meet a predetermined small budget, applying a melamine tape with your own hands will allow you to combine acceptable quality and the lowest price.

But for amateurs who, for some reason, do not have access to PVC edge with glue applied, but really want to veneer their furniture with PVC, it will have to be “at the checkout”. We cut the edge into pieces slightly larger (about 10 mm) than the length of the part to be glued (I will glue the ends in the photo). A garden pruner is great for cutting, but you can just scratch the edge with a sharp object - it will break exactly where the scratch is.

We apply glue to the part (some glues mean applying to both glued surfaces - read the instructions).

Then we turn the part over and lay it on the edge, pressing it against a flat surface.

Now the part must be fixed until the glue dries.

To do this, you can use specialized edge clamps. I use - they are screwed onto the usual F-shaped ones.

It is better to press through a wooden block for a more even distribution of pressure.

The second option is to use special clamps. I made these with a couple pieces of plywood and studs.

After the glue dries, we release the parts from the clamps and cut the ends. This can be done either with the same secateurs or again by scratching and breaking off.

In both cases, such a cut is obtained, which sometimes has to be slightly adjusted with a fine sandpaper on a block.

Now we move on to removing overhangs from the faces.

For 0.4 mm edges, a knife or ruler is enough (similar to melamine). For 2 mm edges, an edge router is required.

If the sheet is laminated or sanded, and it is planned to paint it, then the sheet itself must be primed, its edges puttied, sealed with a construction bandage with an approach to the plane of the sheet, putty bandage and painted.

When cutting such chipboard, you need to be very careful, use a sawing tool that leaves a smooth edge. The laminating coating of chipboard during cutting is very fond of crumbling and chipping. If this happened, then it will not be possible to correct the situation. I do not know how to beautifully repair such a chip. You will either have to put up with it, or saw off a new workpiece. Next, I recommend filling the edge. Many people glue the edge tape directly onto the sawn edge, but I tried to do this and gave up on it. The tape doesn't adhere well to the surface. I putty the edge with acrylic universal putty. After drying, the skin is medium-grained. I do this very carefully so as not to chip the laminate with chipboard. Then I stick the tape on the leveled surface.

I will dwell on the types of tapes - edges. Usually it is paper (in the generalized sense of the word ‘paper’) tape and plastic. Paper tape is sold pre-applied with hot melt adhesive. It is glued with an iron. I will not dwell on this process in detail, there are enough materials on the network on this topic. You need to pay attention to the quality of the tape and glue. If subsequently the tape lags behind, then it can be glued with ordinary glue, this will not be noticeable. The plastic tape is glued on. The adhesive may already be applied to the plastic tape and covered with a paper protective strip. This is a bad case. This glue sticks very badly. Do not buy plastic edging with adhesive already applied.

What glue to use? It is better to use the glue recommended by the edge manufacturer. In fact, postforming and softforming is a method of applying laminate to pre-milled ends of chipboard.

There is no particular difference between postforming and softforming, and in both cases this technology is the application of a durable polymer material on the end of the part. The only difference is that when using postforming, it is possible to laminate a straight end with rounded edges, the radius of which is at least 3 mm. In the case of softforming, lamination lends itself to the ends with various kinds of embossed surface, and even from the inside (groove under the glass). That is, the end of the chipboard can be milled in the same way as in MDF, and easily laminated using this method.
